    After a hectic 2023, my best friend, husband, and I spent New Year’s Eve watching movies and drinking our favorite Noble Vines Cabernet Sauvignon. Although it was a low-key, cozy evening, I was inevitably clumsy and spilled wine on my favorite tea towel as I was pouring our second glasses. As an avid follower (and enthusiast) of #CleanTok, I remembered a video from TikTok’s beloved Grandma Babs as I got over my initial shock of possibly ruining my festive holiday tea towel. However, the process shocked me even more, as this was the first time a viral trick didn’t go as planned.

    Grandma Babs’ red wine stain removal trick simply required one surprising ingredient: more wine! White wine, in fact. In Babs’ video, the white wine seemingly erased the dark red stain like magic after she absorbed the excess with paper towels. Thankfully, I had a roll and a bottle of sauvignon blanc that I normally use for cooking, but figured it could get the job done. 

    I poured the same amount of white wine as I spilled (a little less than 1/4 cup) and let it sit for about a minute. I started dabbing with the paper towels, even placing one in between the towel to absorb as much red wine as possible. I had some hope at first when I noticed some red color on the paper towels, but after a few more dabs my hope diminished, as the stain looked essentially the same as when I first spilled the wine. 

    My best friend, who loves a good cleaning hack as much as I do, suggested some baking soda. I sprinkled enough to cover the stain and rubbed it in lightly, leaving it for five minutes to do the work. After wiping off the baking soda, the three of us were horrified at the black spot now staining my poor tea towel. 

    Because home remedies didn’t seem to be working, I decided to put some OxiClean Stain Remover on the stain, let it sit for 15 minutes, and throw my tea towel in the wash as my last resort. I was relieved to find out it worked — for the most part, at least. 

    There was a very faint stain, but overall my tea towel was restored back to its cute glory. Even though Grandma Babs’ wine stain removal trick didn’t work for me, I’ll definitely continue to follow her sage advice, hacks, and tips and keep up with the trials and errors of home cleaning. Moral of the story? Always be skeptical of viral cleaning tips and tricks — and when all else fails, stick to tried-and-true cleaning methods (like these red wine stain removal tricks).

    The sugar industry responds to evidence implicating sweeteners in the obesity epidemic. 
     
    In terms of excess body fat, the “well-documented obesity epidemic may merely be the tip of the overfat iceberg.” It’s been estimated that 91 percent of adults—nine out of ten of us—and 69 percent of children in the United States are overfat, a condition defined as having “excess body fat sufficient to impair health.” This can occur even in individuals who are “normal-weight and non-obese, often due to excess abdominal fat.” The way to tell if you’re overfat is if your waist circumference is more than half your height. What’s causing this epidemic? As I discuss in my video Does Sugar Lead to Weight Gain?, one primary cause may be all the added sugars we’re eating
     
    A century ago, sugar was heralded as one of the cheapest forms of calories in the diet. Just ten cents’ worth of sugar could furnish thousands of calories. Dr. Fredrick Stare, “Harvard’s sugar-pushing nutritionist,” bristled at the term “empty calories,” writing that the calories in sugar were “not empty but full of energy”—in other words, full of calories, which we are now getting too much of. The excess bodyweight of the U.S. population corresponds to about a daily 350- to 500-calorie excess on average. So, “to revert the obesity epidemic,” that’s how many calories we have to reduce, but which calories should we cut? As you can see below and at 1:33 in my video, the majority of Americans who fail to meet the Dietary Guidelines’ sugar limit get about that many calories in added sugars every day: Twenty-five teaspoons’ worth of added sugars is about 400 calories. 

    There are die-hard sugar defenders. James Rippe, for example, was reportedly paid $40,000 a month by the high fructose corn syrup industry—and that was on top of the $10 million it paid for his research. Even Dr. Rippe considers it “undisputable that sugars…contribute to obesity. It is also undisputable that sugar reduction…should be part of any weight loss program.” And, of all sources of calories to limit, since sugar is just empty calories and contains no essential nutrients, “reducing sugar consumption is obviously the place to start.” And, again, this is what the researchers funded by the likes of Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola are saying. The primary author of “Dietary Sugar and Body Weight: Have We Reached a Crisis in the Epidemic of Obesity and Diabetes?…,” Richard Kahn, is infamous for his defense of the American Beverage Association—the soda industry—and he was the chief science officer at the American Diabetes Association when it signed a million-dollar sponsorship deal with the world’s largest candy company. “Maybe the American Diabetes Association should rename itself the American Junk Food Association,” said the director of a consumer advocacy group. What do you expect from an organization that was started with drug industry funding? 
     
    The bottom line is that “randomised controlled trials show that increasing sugars intake increases energy [calorie] intake” and “increasing sugar intake leads to body weight gain in adults, and…sugar reduction leads to body weight loss in children.” For example, when researchers randomized individuals to either increase or decrease their intake of table sugar, the added sugar group gained about three and a half pounds over ten weeks, whereas the reduced sugar group lost about two and a half pounds. A systematic review and meta-analysis of all such ad libitum diet studies—real-life studies where sugar levels were changed but people could otherwise eat whatever they wanted—found that reduced intake of dietary sugars resulted in a decrease in body weight, whereas “increased sugars intake was associated with a comparable weight increase.” The researchers found that, “considering the rapid weight gain that occurs after an increased intake of sugars, it seems reasonable to conclude that advice relating to sugars intake is a relevant component of a strategy to reduce the high risk of overweight and obesity in most countries.” That is, it’s reasonable to advise people to cut down on their sugar consumption. 
     
    Findings from observational studies have been “more ambiguous,” though, with an association found between obesity and intake of sweetened beverages, but failing to show consistent correlations with consumption of sugary foods. Most such studies rely on self-reported data, however, and “it is likely that this has introduced bias, especially as underreporting of diet has been found to be more prevalent among obese people and it is sugar-rich foods that are most commonly underreported.” However, one can measure trace sucrose levels in the urine, which gives an objective measure of actual sugar intake and also excludes contributions from other sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup. When researchers did this, they discovered that, indeed, sugar intake is not only associated with greater odds of obesity and greater waist circumference on a snapshot-in-time cross-sectional basis, but that was also seen in a prospective cohort study over time. “Using urinary sucrose as the measure of sucrose intake,” researchers found that “participants in the highest v. the lowest quintile [fifth] for sucrose intake had 54% greater risk of being overweight or obese.” 
     
    Denying evidence that sugars are harmful to health has always been at the heart of the sugar industry’s defense.” But when the evidence is undeniable, like the link between sugar and cavities, it switches from denial to deflection, like trying to pull attention away from restricting intake to coming up with some kind of “vaccine against tooth decay.” We seem to have reached a similar point with obesity, with the likes of the Sugar Bureau switching from denial to deflection by commissioning research suggesting that obese individuals would not benefit from losing weight, a stance contradicted by hundreds of studies across four continents involving more than ten million participants.

    Shares of Nike Inc. tumbled after hours Thursday after the athletic-gear giant warned of a “softer second-half revenue outlook” on its quarterly earnings call, and said it is targeting up to $2 billion in cost cuts over the next three years as it looks to shed management and focus on women customers and its Jordan brand.

    said that the savings could come from simplifying its product selection and using more automation and technology. But the athletic-gear giant has also reportedly begun to lay workers off, and said it expected to book pre-tax restructuring charges of around $400 million to $450 million, much of it in the company’s fiscal third quarter, “primarily associated with employee-severance costs.”

    Nike did not immediately respond to questions about job cuts at the company, or how many staff have been or could be laid off. But on the company’s earnings call, management said its plans included “reducing management layers.”

    In Nike’s earnings release, Chief Financial Officer Matthew Friend said the company’s fiscal second quarter — in which per-share profit beat expectations while sales were roughly in line — marked “a turning point in driving more-profitable growth.”

    But investors appeared skeptical after hours on Thursday, as shares slid more than 11%.

    Nike announced the cost-cutting drive as clothing and shoe brands try to steer through weaker demand overall and a broader price-cutting battle in retail stores for inflation-battered customers. Those customers have had to set aside more money to cover the costs of ever-pricier essential goods, at the expense of things like sportswear and sneakers.

    “We are seeing indications of more cautious consumer behavior around the world in an uneven macro environment,” Friend said during the call.

    Nike executives said consumer demand was strong through the back-to-school season, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but lagged in between. Demand wobbled online, and in China and Europe.

    They also said that the money they planned to save would be reinvested into helping Nike become more nimble and more responsive to consumer preferences, after years of shifting away from selling shoes and gear through traditional retail chains in favor of doing business through its own stores and e-commerce channels. They added that those efforts “added complexity and inefficiencies” as competition grew steeper.

    Chief Executive John Donahoe said on the call that the Nike-brand women’s segment was already a $9 billion business. But he said new products — like bras, leggings, retro-themed running shoes and other offerings that span both sports and lifestyle — would help draw more women customers.

    Within the Jordan category, Donahoe cited opportunities beyond basketball sneakers. Clothing and golf-, soccer- and football-related products, along with offerings targeted toward women and children, would also help drive growth, he said.

    But for the rest of its fiscal year, Nike’s expectations were dimmer. The company said it forecasted “slightly negative” sales growth for its fiscal third quarter. For its fourth quarter, executives expect low-single-digits sales gains. And they said they now anticipate Nike’s full-year sales to increase around 1%, compared to an outlook in September for mid-single-digits gains.

    In its fiscal second quarter, which ended on Nov. 30, Nike reported net income in the period of $1.58 billion, or $1.03 a share, compared with $1.33 billion, or 85 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue rose 1% year over year, to $13.4 billion.

    Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings per share of 84 cents, on sales of $13.39 billion.

    Gross margin rose to 44.6%, helped by price increases and lower costs for ocean-freight shipping.

    Nike management also said in their previous earnings call in September that they aimed to do more to attract women and running-shoe customers. However, they noted that demand for the company’s products remained solid and they were “cautiously planning for modest markdown improvements for the balance of the year,” as the company tightens up its supplies of sneakers and clothing in stock.

    On Thursday’s call, executives said that demand for higher-priced products had been “resilient,” and that they didn’t have to cut prices as much as their rivals. And they said new releases — like the Sabrina 1 and Luka 2 sneakers — were the best way to stand out in a sea of discounts.

    “We know in an environment like this, when the consumer is under pressure and the promotional activity is higher, that it’s newness and innovation which causes the consumer to act,” Friend said.

    When I read the ingredient list for this one, I had high hopes. This recipe incorporates chocolate hazelnut spread in addition to dark chocolate, and is the only one to include a pinch of salt. A little bit of salt with your sweet is terrific! This is also the only recipe to lead with non-dairy milk. The curveball for me was the cocoa nibs, which don’t melt and seemed like a possibly problematic texture-add. This recipe uses the blender in addition to the stovetop, putting it squarely in a higher-lift category than every other recipe I tested. Still, I was hopeful it would yield a good cocoa with some added depth of flavor. 

    Before heating the milk on the stovetop you add dark chocolate chips, chocolate hazelnut spread, cocoa nibs, and salt to a blender. Once the milk is warm, you carefully pour it over the ingredients in the blender and allow them to sit for 30 seconds. Then everything is blended until smooth. Unfortunately, despite blending for over 3 minutes (well over the 30 seconds the recipe called for), I could not get the mixture totally smooth. The cocoa nibs remained stubbornly “nibby” and resulted in a gritty cocoa. 

    While blending heated milk and a few other ingredients is not necessarily a lot of work, it was noticeably more (and created more dishes to clean) than every other recipe I tested. Grittiness aside, the flavor of the cocoa was a tad on the bitter side and while the use of almond milk is great for non-dairy folks, the cocoa itself had a distinctly thinner texture than other cocoas I tested.

    The report released this week said that petroleum fortunes are “reshaping global business as never before,” and noted that the three Gulf families who made Bloomberg’s latest list of family fortunes are probably even wealthier than these “conservative estimates.” 

    The Al Nahyans of Abu Dhabi rule the list with $305 billion to their name, according to the report, which notes that the United Arab Emirates capital is home to most of the country’s oil reserves. 

    The Al Nahyan family holds $45 billion more than the Walton family, which owns 46% of Walmart — the world’s largest retailer by revenue. The Waltons have ruled the rankings for the past several years, but are now No. 2, worth $259.7 billion in the most recent fiscal year.

    Rounding out the top three is the Hermès family, whose fortune can be traced to the French luxury house. The founding family is worth $150.9 billion, as they still own a two-thirds majority in the company. 

    As far as other Americans on the list, the Mars family’s confectionary collection of chocolate brands such as M&Ms, Milky Way and Snickers bars — not to mention pet products — land them in fourth place with $141.9 billion. And the Koch family, behind Koch Industries, is in sixth place with $127.3 billion. 

    The report added that the richest families have certainly gotten richer this year, with the world’s ultra-rich clans collectively adding $1.5 trillion — yes, trillion — to their wealth in the past year, a 43% increase over their already considerable fortunes in 2022. 

    So here are the world’s 10 richest families of 2023, as reported by Bloomberg.

    Luxury hotels serve up a glamorous way to brighten up the Christmas season, whether for an overnight stay or an elegant afternoon tea.

    These lavish hotels are worth a closer look for a few hours of sipping tea and admiring Christmas decorations or for a spur of the moment escape or a future holiday splurge.

    Natural mineral springs have drawn guests, including US presidents, to The Greenbrier for more than two centuries. The historic hotel opened in 1913.

    Letters to Santa, a fun run and cookie decorating workshops are all part of The Greenbrier’s lineup in the days surrounding December 25.

    On Christmas Eve, there’s a Season’s Greetings Dinner ($125 per adult; $55 per child) and a service in the resort’s chapel. On Christmas Day, puzzles and board games, indoor planetarium presentations and a Christmas musical will keep families entertained.

    Fishing, foraging and hiking are just outside at The Fife Arms, an antiques-packed, 19th-century retreat within Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands.

    The hotel is 14.5 kilometers (nine miles) from Balmoral, the Royal Family’s residence in Scotland.

    Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner will be served at both Olivella and The Oak, and there’s a grand buffet on Christmas Day at The Farmhouse ($195 per adult, including wine; $65 for children 12 and younger).

    You had a little too much to drink last night, and now you’re nursing that dreaded morning aftermath — a hangover.

    What seemed like fun at the time is now causing your hands to shake, your head to pound and your heart to race, not to mention other unpleasant symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity and excruciating thirst.

    Why are you suffering? Because the liquor that smoothly passed your lips is now wreaking havoc in your body, causing dehydration, stomach distress and inflammation. These ailments peak about the time all the alcohol leaves your body.

    There is no scientifically proven way to cure a hangover, but experts say you can prevent one — or at least keep that morning-after misery to a minimum. Here’s how.

    Forget a late-night meal after a night of drinking — that’s much too late, experts say. Instead, eat before your first drink and keep noshing as the night goes on.

    “Food in the stomach slows gastric emptying and can reduce hangover symptoms,” said Dr. Robert Swift, a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island.

    Why does food help? Because most alcohol isn’t absorbed by an empty stomach but via the intestinal tract just below it, Swift said.

    “If somebody does shots on an empty stomach, for example, all that pure alcohol is not diluted by the stomach and is passed to the intestine very quickly,” said Swift, who has studied alcohol abuse since the 1990s.

    “If the stomach contains food, however, there are gastric juices and enzymes that mix the food and the alcohol, and only small amounts of food are passed into the intestine,” he said. “Now the alcohol is diluted in the stomach, and only a small quantity of alcohol is absorbed at any time.”

    Drinking water can help reduce the dehydration that occurs from downing too many alcoholic drinks.

    The same principle applies to water and other nonalcoholic beverages, Swift said. “If alcohol is mixed with fluid, it’s diluted, so when it goes into your intestines, it’s not as irritating. You’re less likely to have inflamed intestines or an inflamed stomach lining.”

    There’s another benefit to downing water between drinks, said Dr. John Brick, former chief of research at the Center of Alcohol Studies, Education and Training Division, at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

    “The primary cause of hangovers is dehydration and the loss of fluids, along with vitamins and minerals,” said Brick, who authored “The Doctor’s Hangover Handbook” and published scientific papers on the biobehavioral effects of alcohol and other drugs.

    Downing just 3½ alcoholic drinks can result in the loss of up to a quart of water over several hours, Brick added. “That’s a good amount of water that has to be replenished.”

    Dehydration from alcohol may affect a woman even more, and she is more likely to suffer a hangover, even if she drinks less than a man, Swift said. That’s because a man has a higher percentage of body water than a woman of the same height and weight, so the same amount of alcohol will be more diluted in a man, he said.

    The alcohol we drink, called ethyl alcohol or ethanol, is the byproduct of fermenting carbohydrates and starches, usually some sort of grain, grape or berry.

    We use byproducts of fermentation in other ways: Ethanol is added to the gasoline in our cars, and methyl alcohol or methanol — a toxic substance — is used as a solvent, pesticide and alternative fuel source. Also called wood alcohol, methyl alcohol made by bootleggers blinded or killed thousands of people during Prohibition.

    That’s not all — the list of byproducts or chemicals added by manufacturers for flavor and taste can read like a list of supplies at an industrial warehouse: ethyl formate, ethyl acetate, n-propanol, isobutanol, n-butanol, isopentanol and isoamyl alcohols. While these congeners, as they are called, are added in small, nontoxic amounts, some people are overly sensitive to their effects.

    Overall, dark-colored beer and spirits tend to contain more congeners and thus may be more likely to cause hangovers, experts say. A 2010 study investigated the intensity of hangovers in people who drank the darker-colored liquor bourbon versus clear vodka.

    “Congeners in bourbon … significantly increased hangover intensity, which is not too surprising since bourbon has about 37 times the amount of congeners as vodka,” Brick said.

    Chemical preservatives called sulfites, known to cause allergic reactions in sensitive people, are also a natural byproduct of fermentation in small quantities. However, many manufacturers of beer and wine add sulfites to their products to extend shelf life. (Sulfites are also added to soda, cereals, sweeteners, canned and ultraprocessed foods, medications and more.)

    Sweet and white wines tend to have more sulfites than red, but red wines contain more tannins, which are bitter or astringent compounds found in the skin and seeds of grapes. Like sulfites, tannins can trigger allergic reactions in people who are sensitive.

    As a result, limiting your drinking to light beers, clear liquors and white wine might help keep hangovers at bay.

    In the end, however, experts say there is only one true preventive — or cure — for a hangover: Don’t drink.

    “There’s no simple cure because there are so many complex factors that are producing the multiple symptoms of a hangover,” Swift said. “And that’s why the only real cure for a hangover is to not drink alcohol or drink such a low amount of alcohol that it won’t trigger a hangover.”

    We know that alcohol dehydrates, so a headache and other hangover symptoms may be partly due to constricted blood vessels and a loss of electrolytes, essential minerals such as sodium, calcium and potassium that your body needs.

    And if you’re a coffee drinker, skipping your morning cup of joe may lead to caffeine withdrawal on top of your hangover.

    “If you have a hangover, have a quarter of a cup of coffee,” Brick suggests. “See if you feel better — it takes about 20 minutes for the caffeine to start to have some noticeable effect.

    “If coffee doesn’t make you feel better, don’t drink anymore.”

    Replacing lost fluids with water or a type of sports drink with extra electrolytes can help boost recovery from a hangover, Swift said.

    And while most alcohol is handled by the liver, a small amount leaves the body unchanged through sweat, urine and breathing.

    Get up, do some light stretching and walking, and drink plenty of water to encourage urination, Brick said.

    “Before you go to sleep and when you wake up, drink as much water as you comfortably can handle,” he said.
