Bernie Winter didn’t hold back in Coronation Street tonight (Wednesday, February 25) as she came face to face with the unsettling Mal Roper – and made it crystal clear she wanted him gone.

Convinced that Mal was behind the creepy break-in at her home and the tampering with her wedding photo, Bernie ordered him to head straight back to Inverness. And if he didn’t? Bernie chillingly warned that he’d be a dead man.

With spoilers already teasing that Mal is attacked tomorrow night, did Bernie go too far? Or, is someone else to blame?

Bernie told Dev the truth in Coronation Street

It was a tense evening all round for Bernie as she waited for Dev and Asha to return home. Already on edge, she grabbed a golf club when someone knocked at the door. Thankfully it was only Kit – but the sight of the club raised eyebrows, and Bernie soon found herself spilling the truth about Mal.

Things only escalated when Dev and Asha walked in mid-confession. Encouraged by Kit to be honest, Bernie came clean – and Dev was furious. Hurt by the lies and terrified Mal might return and put Asha in danger, Dev stormed out.

Later, Bernie headed to work, only to find Mal Roper already there and kicking off. He demanded to know what she’d been saying about him, loudly bragging about their drug-fuelled night together in the hotel. Roy quickly stepped in, refusing to let Mal shame his staff, and booted him out.

But Mal wasn’t done. And that’s when Bernie delivered her most chilling line yet – telling him to leave for Inverness or she’d make sure he was a dead man, vowing she’d kill him herself if it came to it.

Coronation Street spoilers reveal Bernie arrest as Mal’s attacked

In tomorrow night’s episode (Thursday, February 26), it looks like Bernie’s words may have come frighteningly close to reality. Weatherfield is rocked when Lisa discovers a man sprawled in the Street with a serious head injury. Kit is left stunned when he reads the name – Mal Roper.

As the drama unfolds, Bernie is seen heading down the café stairs with her bags packed, her nerves clearly shot. At the hospital, the news is grim – Mal is fighting for his life. And then comes the bombshell. DC Browning arrives at the café and arrests Bernie on suspicion of assault.

Insisting she’s innocent, Bernie Winter tells police that while she did spend the night with Mal, things turned dark when he began stalking her. But with Mal critically injured and Bernie behind bars, the Street is left buzzing. Is Bernie telling the truth, or is there more to this troubling story than she’s letting on?

Coronation Street follow-up: As Mal refuses to disappear, Dev and Bernie’s marriage faces breaking point

Bernie was left rattled in tonight’s Coronation Street (Friday, January 30) as she pleaded with Mal to keep quiet about what really happened the night before – especially where Dev is concerned.

Mal agreed to keep her drug use under wraps, but made it clear she wouldn’t be getting off lightly, warning Bernie that she’d be seeing a lot more of him around the Street.

And now Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has hinted that Mal’s continued presence, coupled with Bernie’s ongoing grief, will put Dev and Bernie’s marriage through a major ‘test’ in the weeks ahead.

Mal agrees to keep Bernie’s secret in Coronation Street

Bernie’s loved ones were on edge earlier in the episode when she failed to answer her phone after being out all night. With Brody’s 17th birthday party fast approaching, her absence was hard to ignore.

She eventually staggered home just in time, urging everyone to get ready while she wrapped the presents, but her behaviour raised eyebrows.

Ryan had already filled Gemma in on Bernie taking drugs with a stranger at the hotel. Although Gemma confronted a clearly grieving Bernie, she chose to keep the truth from Dev.

Later, after the party, Bernie came face-to-face with Mal again and begged him not to say anything about the drugs or what went on between them. Mal promised to stay silent – but dropped the bombshell that she’d be seeing more of him, after Roy offered him work sorting out his electrics.

Coronation Street boss teases big ‘test’ for Dev and Bernie’s marriage

Speaking recently, Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks revealed that Bernie and Dev’s relationship will be pushed to its limits as Bernie’s grief continues to spiral and Mal becomes a fixture in Weatherfield.

But despite the strain, it seems the couple may yet weather the storm.

Kate explained: “We take Bernie on a really interesting journey as she struggles. It gets to the point where, because it’s been bubbling for such a long time, it eventually erupts. When it does, there are consequences for Bernie. It’s not as straightforward as Dev sweeping in and making sure that everything’s okay. It’s a really muddy, murky story that we take her on. I think it just again explores another side of Bernie that we’ve not seen yet.”

She added that while the pressure will be intense, their bond runs deep: “Obviously it’s going to be a test for Bernie and Dev, but it’s a test that they are a really strong couple, and no matter what we throw at them, they can overcome because they love each other.

“They absolutely adore each other. It’s a big story for Bernie, and certainly Roy’s embroiled in that story as well. It’s a really interesting one to keep an eye on, because it’s going to be quite a big start of the year for Bernie.”

With secrets, grief and Mal’s looming presence all in play, Dev and Bernie’s marriage is heading into seriously choppy waters.

1. Bernie confesses her secret

When Gemma realises Bernie has been lying about her whereabouts, she asks Dev to find out what’s really going on with her mum. Dev confronts Bernie and it’s not long before she admits her big secret.

She confesses she had another child, a son named Zodiac. He was known as Zac for short and was taken into care. Then he was adopted and changed his name to Christopher Green. Bernie is determined to find him.

2. Bernie gets bad news about her son

After going through her whole list of Christopher Greens, Bernie has only one left to visit. She tells Dev she’s off to find out if he’s the one.

But when she gets there, she finds out that Christopher has died of cancer. Devastated Bernie drinks herself into oblivion, sure she’s missed her last chance to find her son.

3. Bethany obsesses over Nathan in Coronation Street spoilers

Bethany overhears Dee-Dee telling Carla and Nina some news about Lauren’s phone messages and her ears prick up. She soon finds a way to get into the solicitors’ office to find out more info.

4. Nathan confronts Bethany

Bethany asks Craig about Nathan’s alibi. He lets slip Nathan was with his girlfriend who works in a nail bar. Given he was running a tanning salon when he groomed Bethany, she becomes more convinced than ever this is his new cover and he’s to blame for missing Lauren.

As Sarah worries to Gary that Bethany is fixated on pinning it all on Nathan, Bethany is being confronted by the man himself. She and Daniel walk on to the cobbles to find Nathan shouting at Bethany for harassing his girlfriend.

5. Nathan attacked

In the Rovers, Sarah, Gary and David discuss the need to do something about Nathan before he ruins Bethany’s life all over again.

Meanwhile, at the building site where he’s working, Nathan is packing up when a hooded figure approaches. He is struck over the head and falls to the ground unconscious.

6. Coronation Street spoilers: David accused

As Bethany wonders who Nathan’s attacker is, Shona is worried it was David. He has a stain on his jeans and she’s not convinced by his cover story.

As he insists to Bethany and Sarah he is innocent, Shona arrives with a tracking app on his phone. It proves he was at the building site when Nathan was attacked. David confesses he was there and saw the attack, but didn’t do it himself. So who was responsible?

7. Toyah warns Leanne

Still mistrustful of the Institute, Toyah finds a forum for ex-members. She tries to show Leanne a post she’s seen, but it’s been deleted.

Leanne’s dismissive, but talks to Rowan to find out what’s happened. He tells her it was written by a bitter ex and there’s no truth in her words.

8. Leanne sucked further in

Rowan tells Leanne he’s been promoted to head of the North-West division. He then offers her a tour of the Institute and Leanne is flattered.

9. Will Toyah get answers in Coronation Street spoilers?

Leanne puts Simon in touch with someone from the Institute willing to invest in his food delivery app. But Toyah is suspicious it’s another scam.

She sets about digging into Rowan and manages to find a number for his ex, Una. Toyah and Una meet and Toyah explains she’s worried her sister is in danger. Will Una confirm her worst fears?

10. Leanne leaves – causing chaos

Leanne is heading off on a retreat. Toyah begs her not to go, but Leanne refuses and leaves – without saying goodbye to Simon.

Feeling hurt, Si bunks off work and gets drunk. He then throws up in Tim’s cab and does a runner without paying.

George apologises to Glenda and then offers her a cheque for £22k by way of a compromise. But will it be enough to end their feud?

12. Steve confesses all

Furious about Weatherfield County’s plans to honour Tommy Orpington with a bust, Steve moans to Demi. She asks what the problem is and so he reveals all about Tracy’s affair.

Steve is later upset when he sees pictures on social media of Tracy paragliding with Tommy. Tim and Sally soon arrange a double date with Steve and Demi, but is he really over Tracy?

12. Coronation Street spoilers: Paul has his final meal

It’s an emotional moment for Paul as he eats his last meal before his feeding tube is fitted.

13. Kevin tries to drum up business
