  • Phillip Frankland Lee Brings NADC’s Viral Wagyu Burgers Home to Los Angeles

    [ad_1]

Chef Phillip Frankland Lee moved from Los Angeles to Austin during the Covid-19 pandemic, but there was not a damn chance that he was abandoning California.

Lee, who grew up in Los Angeles, has continued to operate Sushi by Scratch Restaurants. The Montecito outpost earned a 2021 Michelin star, and Sushi by Scratch is also going strong at its locations in Encino and the SLS Beverly Hills. Lee keeps pushing harder at Encino’s Pasta | Bar, which has had a Michelin Star for five consecutive years and was featured in Apple TV’s Knife Edge series last year. (In 2025, Lee and his brother, Lennon, made history by becoming the first siblings to earn a Michelin star at different U.S. restaurants in the same year.)

And now he’s back in L.A. to remind his hometown that he’s also an ace at creating casual food. On Friday, Feb. 27, Lee and pro skateboarder Neen Williams will open NADC Burger’s first Los Angeles location in Westwood, near the UCLA campus.

NADC, which is short for Not a Damn Chance, is a wagyu burger spot that Lee and Williams already operate in Austin, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Worth, Denver, Charlotte and Nashville. The menu is straightforward and habit-forming, with double wagyu cheeseburgers and beef tallow fries.

The menu is composed of double wagyu cheeseburgers and beef tallow fries. Jake Ostrowski

NADC has become a viral, celebrity-friendly sensation, with clientele including David Beckham and Zedd. Jelly Roll, who has declared that NADC’s burger is the best he’s ever had, loves it so much that he serves the burger at his Goodnight Nashville honky-tonk. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck recently popped by NADC in Austin and also headed next door to Lee’s new Shokunin sushi restaurant.

“I think what sets us apart at NADC is that I run it like I run the line at Pasta or Sushi,” Lee tells Observer. “I put as much attention into every spec when we’re building the burger.”

There’s American cheese, secret sauce (a ketchup and mayonnaise base enhanced with Tabasco and some “little secret notes to make it extra umami”), onions, a generous amount of pickles and “slightly tamed” jalapeños that are boiled before they’re pickled. The beef is American wagyu with Japanese genetics. And when each 3-ounce patty comes off the griddle, it goes onto a resting rack with a 90-second timer so that the juices settle and excess grease drips off. This is precision-focused cooking that grew out of Lee’s backyard hangs with Williams.

Lee applied the same principles from his other restaurants to making the burgers at NADC. Jake Ostrowski

Like Jelly Roll, Zedd and Joe Rogan (who collaborated with NADC on a limited-edition burger in Austin last year), Williams was a guest at the counter of Sushi by Scratch when he met Lee.

“I was already a fan of his because I grew up skateboarding,” Lee says. “He was solo, and I always talk to everybody. He’s like, ‘Yeah, I like to cook.’ I’m like, ‘OK, cute.’ And then he shows me a picture of his backyard where he has a 12-foot masonry hearth that he built himself. I’m like, ‘Oh, you really cook.’”

Lee and Williams started hanging out a lot, skateboarding together, getting their wives together and cooking together.

“We did whole pigs and a lot of steaks over the fire,” Lee says. “And one thing we were doing often was burgers.”

Lee had recently returned from Bangkok, where he had been working on a sushi restaurant and a burger spot that never opened due to the pandemic. So he was in the mood to make burgers, and he and Williams started giving away burgers at Austin skateparks and comedy shows. That led to a 2022 pop-up and then, in 2023, NADC’s first brick-and-mortar location.

Jelly Roll, a huge fan of the NADC burger, was a guest on Lee and Williams’ ‘Not A Damn Chance!’ podcast. YMH Studios

The success of NADC has spawned the Not A Damn Chance! podcast, with Lee and Williams talking to guests like Jelly Roll, Zedd, Bert Kreischer, Tom Segura, Mel Robbins, Aaron Franklin and poker pro Doug Polk. Lee is an avid poker player who’s done well in tournaments. And to use a gambling term, he’s been on some kind of rush, opening restaurant after restaurant.

Lee didn’t have any intention of moving to Austin when he went there in 2020 for a sushi pop-up. But after he saw that pop-up sell out with a 25,000-person waiting list, he kept it going month to month. After five months in Austin, Lee looked at his wife, pastry chef Margarita Kallas-Lee, and said, “I think we live in Austin now.”

Lee has built a new life in Texas, where he’s now working to create his most over-the-top project yet. He’s found four acres in Hill Country, about half an hour from Austin, where he plans to have a farm, inn and restaurant with aspirations at three-Michelin-star status and World’s 50 Best recognition.

“We will grow or harvest most of the menu and hunt the rest of the menu,” Lee says. “We’ll milk cows in the morning to get the cream to make butter. We’ll get dairy cows from a local farm and finish them on the grain of the local brewery and the mash of the local olive oil mill.”

Lee is nothing if not ambitious. In 2017, when he was 30 years old, he told me he wanted to have “100 world-class restaurants” by the time he was 50. The pandemic slowed him down a bit, but the L.A. location of NADC Burger puts him at 30 restaurants, and he still thinks he’ll hit his lofty goal.

“I’m the same age Thomas Keller was when he took over The French Laundry, and you could argue that was the beginning of his career,” Lee says. “I’m going to be 39 on March 9, so I’m still young. I think I’ll probably surpass 100 restaurants by the time I’m 50. But I don’t think I’m doing it for the same reasons that made me want to do it before.”

All the success he’s had has motivated him in a more meaningful way.

“I’ve now gotten the stars and the TV and the accolades and the personal freedom to feel like I’ve ‘done it,’” Lee says. “But I think I now get off on different things. It used to be more ego-driven. Now I look around and see someone who comes on as a prep cook, moves all the way into executive chef in our company, has a child and gets a fully paid paternity or maternity leave. They’re getting a 401(k). I have cooks and bartenders buying houses. The more I grow, the more we grow.”

NADC Burger, located at 1091 Broxton Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90024, will be open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to midnight.

“It’s not easy for anyone figuring out relationships, particularly at the very early part, where you’re trying to gauge, ‘What does this signal mean? Is this person looking at me? Do they like me? Am I going to humiliate myself if I go over there?’” he said in a clip shared by Page Six 2025.

  • RHOSLC Star Lisa Barlow Responds to Ben Affleck Saying He Doesn’t Know Her as Costar Angie Mocks Her

    [ad_1]

    Credit: APEX / MEGA, mpi099/MediaPunch/INSTARimages

Lisa Barlow is responding after actor Ben Affleck was asked during a recent viral interview about whether or not he knew the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star.

If you recall, Lisa missed a cast camping trip during the season premiere episode of RHOSLC season 6 last year.  Lisa later admitted she missed the trip because she had to attend two movie primeres which included Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2 and Blake Lively’s Another Simple Favor, at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.

Fast forward to today and Ben was asked about Lisa during an interview by Access Hollywood.

“Real Housewives of Salt Lake City cast member Lisa Barlow is saying that she was with you at an event with her husband and she wasn’t able to film. The cast members don’t believe her. So the question is, do you know who Lisa Barlow is?” interviewer Emily Orozco asked Ben during his interview with his actor pal  Matt Damon to promote their new movie “The Rip.”

Despite appearing confused, Ben, 53, was rather gracious as he stated he didn’t “want to get anybody in trouble.”

“I don’t know what this is—an event in Salt Lake City?” he asked. “I haven’t been in Utah in, I don’t know, 8, 9, 10 years?” he admitted  after seeing a picture of Lisa. “It doesn’t look familiar to me and I don’t remember anything, and I don’t want to embarrass her.”

Ben added, “I meet a lot of people, I say hi to a lot of people. I don’t want to be the jerk who’s like, ‘I did meet you.’ You don’t remember everyone you meet.”

After a clip of Ben’s interview went viral, Lisa, 51, took to the comments section of the Instagram post to clarify when she last saw Ben.

“SXSW [for] The Accountant 2,” she commented referencing last March when Ben’s movie premiere during the Austin, Texas event, “and it was a great movie and party.”

During the current season of RHOSLC, Lisa named dropped Ben and Blake as the reason she had to miss costar Angie Katsanevascamping trip for the cast.

“I don’t want to spend the night with Bronwyn [Newport]. She’s a pathological liar. She can’t tell the truth to save her life. It’s like, disgusting,” shared Lisa. “Also, I have a work thing. It’s a big deal. I think what people forget is I have a very full life. Because I keep it kinda private. Like, I’m not gonna drop names, but like, I’ll be with Ben and Blake.”

She added, “I’ll be with Ben Affleck and you’ll be with Bronwyn.”

In Lisa’s defense, in looking back at an old interview she did with Decider last September about attending this event, she never said she hung out with Ben or was personally invited by him. She described it as a “working” event.

“I define myself by my accomplishments. So, it felt good to be doing something like two premieres in Austin instead of being in an RV,” she explained back then, adding, “I didn’t miss out [on the camping trip].”

Lisa’s costar Angie also reacted to the viral drama as she threw some major shade at Lisa by commenting: “😂😂😂 He didn’t know Lisa but he recognized Celia.”

Celia is Angie’s beloved dog. She is seemingly implying her dog is more famous than Lisa.

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City airs Tuesday nights on Bravo.

  • Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants Plots Reiterated “Three or Four Times in the Dialogue” for Phone-Distracted Viewers

    [ad_1]

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are opening up about the changes Netflix has made to its filmmaking approach.

During a Friday appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience to promote their new Netflix film The Rip, which they star in and produce, the duo discussed the differences between watching a movie in theaters versus at home and how phone-distracted viewers are influencing how films are made.

“I went to see One Battle After Another on IMAX — there’s nothing like that feeling,” Damon said, recalling a trip he took with his family. “You’re in with you know a bunch of strangers, but people in your community and you’re having this experience together. I always say it’s more like going to church — you show up at an appointed time. It doesn’t wait for you.”

Watching at home is a very different experience, Damon said. “You’re watching in a room, the lights are on, other shit’s going on, the kids are running around, the dogs are running around, whatever it is. It’s just a very different level of attention that you’re willing, or that you’re able to give to it.”

Damon then explained how that shift is now affecting how movies are made.

“For instance, Netflix — the standard way to make an action movie, that we learned, was you usually have three set pieces. One in the first act, one in the second, one in the third — and the big one with all the explosions and you spend most of your money on that one in the third act. That’s your kind of finale.”

The Departed actor added, “Now, [Netflix is] like, ‘Can we get a big one in the first five minutes?’ We want people to stay tuned in. And it wouldn’t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they’re watching.”

After laughing with Rogan, Damon added, “It’s going to really start to infringe on how we’re telling these stories.”

Affleck then chimed in, “But then you look at Adolescence and it didn’t do any of that shit and it was fucking great.”

Damon agreed but said, “It feels more like the exception,” adding, “I hope it’s not.”

“My feeling is just that it demonstrates that you don’t need to do any of that shit to get people [to watch],” Affleck said.

He also noted that streaming doesn’t pose an “existential threat” and that “things shift. As television came along, there was less theater-going and that’s still going to happen. And people are still going to go to the movies because of what you said. It feels like a cool thing to do. ‘I’m going to go see The Odyssey. I guarantee you in a theater, no matter what.”

For The Rip, which the filmmakers produced through their company Artists Equity, Affleck and Damon pushed Netflix to strike a deal that would reward their crew with bonuses if the film performs well — a departure from the streaming service’s business model of only paying fees up front.

  • ‘The Rip’ Review: Genre Pro Joe Carnahan Keeps Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Gritty Netflix Cop Thriller in Confident Hands

    [ad_1]

Writer-director Joe Carnahan bows at the altar of Michael Mann in The Rip, from the foreboding Miami nightscapes to a pulsing synth score by Clinton Shorter that echoes the tense atmosphere of classics like Thief and Heat. That’s not to say this gripping Netflix cop thriller is derivative, especially given that Carnahan has his own foundations in the genre, starting with his neo-noir breakthrough, Narc. While his new film doesn’t reshape the mold, an ace cast led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — who produced under their Artists Equity banner — and twisty plotting that bristles with paranoia and mistrust make it an entertaining watch.

Inspired by true events, the film kicks off with a prologue in which Miami-Dade narcotics division captain Jackie Velez (Lina Esco) speeds through a rainy night while trying to keep a woman on the other end of the phone calm. She promises to protect her and get her out of a dangerous situation, but before she can reach the distressed woman, Jackie is shot and killed by two men in ski masks. She manages to send one quick text before disposing of her burner phone.

    The Rip

    The Bottom Line

    Brawny and efficient.

    Release date: Friday, Jan. 16
Cast: Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler, Néstor Carbonell, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Lina Esco
    Director-screenwriter: Joe Carnahan

    Rated R,
    1 hour 52 minutes

The action shifts to police headquarters, where a series of interrogations is underway. Lt. Dane Dumars (Damon), who has been promoted to fill Jackie’s spot, urges his chief, Major Thom Vallejo (Nestor Carbonell), to let his team take charge of the case. But Vallejo, struggling with budget cuts and allegations of corruption in the force, defers to the Feds.

Dane is suspicious that a cop killing has yielded such a low-key internal investigation, with no task force. This comes as the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team has been shut down, with further job cuts threatened.

Dane’s old friend and second in command, Det. Sgt. J.D. Byrne (Affleck), shares his suspicions, snarling defensively at insinuations from the Feds that a dirty cop might have been behind Jackie’s murder. J.D.’s involvement is complicated by the badly kept secret of his relationship with Jackie and by heightened friction with one especially aggressive FBI agent, Del (Scott Adkins), who turns out to be his brother.

Carnahan and editor Kevin Hale keep the audience on its toes piecing together fragments of background information as they intercut among various interrogations. The Feds also question the rest of the Tactical Narcotics Team: detectives Mike Ro (Steven Yeun), Numa Baptiste (Teyana Taylor) and Lolo Salazar (Catalina Sandino Moreno).

Later, while the team is unwinding at the end of a shift, Dane shares news of a crime-stopper tip about a cartel stash house in neighboring Hialeah, and despite disgruntlement about a freeze on overtime pay, he musters his colleagues to go investigate.

The sniffer dog handled by Lolo starts barking up a storm even before they knock on the door. He then bolts up the stairs as soon as they enter, heading for an attic, which unlike the rest of the cluttered house, is pristine and empty. The sole occupant is a young woman named Desi (Sasha Calle), who claims the house belonged to her recently deceased grandmother and says she has never even been in the attic. But once the TNT officers smash through a false wall and find $20 million in cash, her innocence seems a stretch.

That elaborate setup is about as far as a reviewer can go without wading into spoiler territory. But one key factor worth knowing is that Miami-Dade police procedure requires a full count of cash seized from stash houses before the officers leave the scene. That allows time for suspicions to fester and loyalties to be tested, as the amount mentioned on the alleged crime-stopper tip keeps changing, and Dane remains reluctant to phone in their findings to the major.

Threatening anonymous calls give them a half-hour to take a cut of the millions and get out of there before people start dying. Desi, handcuffed to a chair, is the most nervous as she slowly reveals what she knows about the other people who make intermittent use of the house.

Two shady-looking cops in a Hialeah patrol car asking questions raises the temperature, as does what appears to be a widening rift between Dane and J.D. Tensions escalate among the team, even before a hailstorm of bullets rains down on them, wounding Lolo; a cartel member is spotted signaling from a nearby house; and former cop turned DEA officer Matty Nix (Kyle Chandler) turns up in an armored truck and starts meddling.

Carnahan shows skill at bouncing suspicion from one character to another as the destination of the $20 million remains up for debate and the time until the forewarned siege is meant to happen continues shrinking. The plotting gets a bit muddy at times, but the movie keeps sneaky surprises up its sleeve — including the connection of the case to Jackie’s murder — while also illuminating unexpected complicity between law enforcement and drug traffickers that blurs the lines as to what qualifies as corruption. The notion of who exactly are the good guys is questioned, perhaps a little too pointedly, in the acronyms tattooed across Dane’s knuckles.

The muscular direction, moody visuals and Shorter’s glowering score keep the action humming, but the real key is the sharply drawn characters of a highly capable cast.

The long friendship and creative collaboration between Damon and Affleck adds history to their onscreen rapport. Dane appears calm and methodical, albeit broken by the end of his marriage and the loss of his 10-year-old son to cancer. J.D. is more of a hothead, his volatile energy constantly threatening to explode. Yeun’s air of gentleness and honesty is put to good, perhaps misdirecting use, as is Chandler’s relaxed manner and mildly folksy affability.

The women disappear from the testosterone-heavy film for a significant stretch, creating an absence. But there’s an understated edge to Taylor and Moreno’s interplay that makes their characters intriguing.

Calle — who made an impression as Supergirl in Andy Muschietti’s unfairly mistreated The Flash and appeared in the poetic coming-of-age drama In the Summers, which won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize in 2024 — walks a shrewd line with her character. Desi has the sullen guardedness of someone who knows not to trust cops and the vulnerability of a woman steadily realizing she’s in over her head.

The Rip doesn’t reinvent the cops-in-a-pressure-cooker genre, but its mix of closed-quarters tension, car chases and gunfire gets the job done. Thanks to Carnahan and his accomplished cast, it’s both more convincing and more watchable than the average original streaming movie.

  • Ben Affleck’s Kids Begging Him to Give Ex ‘Another Chance’—They’d ‘Like More Than Anything’ For Them to Get Back Together

    [ad_1]

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have had quite a run. On, off, on, off. It’s gone on for so long that it’s no wonder so many people are actively rooting for them. And it seems like on the list of people rooting for them are his kids.

RadarOnline.com is reporting that Lopez has stayed in touch with Affleck’s kids, Violet, 19, Fin, 16, and Samuel, 13, not just checking in on them, but arranging for them to hang out with her own children, Max and Emme, 17. “That’s gone a long way with Ben’s kids, and what they’d like more than anything, as would J.Lo’s kids, is to see Bennifer 3.0,” a source said.

Related: Who has Ben Affleck dated?

Lopez has spoken recently about how she’s “actually good” being single and has moved away from “looking for happiness in other people.” But after she and ex-husband Affleck reunited on the red carpet of Kiss of the Spider Woman, sources around them were singing a different tune. “J.Lo had a wonderful time with Ben and says he’s as sexy and wonderful as ever,” an insider told the outlet.

“In her mind, they’re destined to be together again, plain and simple. She’s believed that all along, and now she’s even more convinced that it’s a case of when, not if, it’s going to happen.”

This all comes after reports that Affleck and his other ex-wife and the mother of his children, Jennifer Garner, had entered into a “friends with benefits” arrangement. The two divorced in 2018 after 13 years of marriage.

“Jen and Ben have always shared a really powerful bond,” a source reportedly told the outlet. “It’s built on years of love, trust, and family. Lately, that closeness has deepened – they’ve been turning to each other for comfort, and it’s naturally become something more intimate.”

The report also indicated reconciliation was not the plan. “It’s not about them getting back together,” the source said. “It’s about finding comfort in someone who knows you completely. They’ve weathered addiction, divorce, and years of co-parenting – that kind of shared history creates a connection most people could never understand.”

Reports about Garner and Affleck’s friendship and co-parenting have always abounded, but this never made any sense, considering Garner is engaged to businessman John Miller. If anything, a possible reconciliation with Affleck’s other ex, Jennifer, seems like it’s way more possible. And, apparently, what his children are hoping happens.

Affleck and Lopez have dated two separate times. They originally got together in 2002 after meeting on the set of the movie Gigli, and got engaged for the first time in November 2022. They broke that engagement in January 2004. After that, Lopez went on to marry Marc Anthony, and Affleck to marry Jennifer Garner, and they both had children with their new spouses.

In 2021, Affleck and Lopez rekindled their romance and shortly after, in April of 2022, got engaged for a second time. This time, they did tie the knot in July 2022. In August 2024, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck on the second anniversary of their wedding ceremony.

Could a third time be the charm? We will have to wait and see.

  • What to Stream: ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Mickey 17,’ Kevin Hart and ‘A Grand Ole Opry Christmas’

    [ad_1]

Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17,” a new batch of “Stranger Things’” final season and Kevin Hart debuting a new comedy special on Netflix are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time this week, as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: “Everybody Loves Raymond” gets a 30th anniversary special on CBS, the Hallmark’s special “A Grand Ole Opry Christmas” with Brad Paisley and Mickey Guyton, and a new Beatles documentary series hits Disney+.

New movies to stream from Nov. 24-30

—Taiwanese filmmaker Shih-Ching Tsou, known for collaborating with and producing several Sean Baker films including “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project,” makes her solo directorial debut with “Left-Handed Girl,” about a single mother and her two daughters who return to Taipei to open a stand at a night market. Netflix acquired the film after it was warmly received during the Cannes Film Festival and Taiwan has already selected the film as its Oscar submission. It begins streaming on Netflix on Nov. 28.

—Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17” arrives on Prime Video on Thursday, Nov. 26, for some dystopian holiday viewing. In her review for The Associated Press, Jocelyn Noveck praised Robert Pattinson’s performance (or, rather, performances) as an expendable who is constantly being reprinted anew. She writes, “It’s his movie, and he saves it from Bong’s tendencies to overstuff the proceedings. In an extremely physical, committed, even exhausting performance, Pattinson takes what could have been an unwieldy mess and makes it much less, well, expendable.”

—OK, “The Last Duel,” streaming on Hulu on Sunday, Nov. 30 might be four years old but it’s a far better option than, say, “Flight Risk” (on HBO Max on Wednesday). Ridley Scott’s medieval tale, written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, is a brilliant spin on the historical epic told from three different perspectives, Damon’s Jean de Carrouges, Adam Driver’s Jacques Le Gris and Jodie Comer’s Marguerite. In his review for the AP, film writer Jake Coyle wrote that it “is more like a medieval tale deconstructed, piece by piece, until its heavily armored male characters and the genre’s mythologized nobility are unmasked.”

    AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr

New music to stream on Nov. 24-30

    — In 2021, over Thanksgiving, Disney+ released Peter Jackson’s six-hour “The Beatles: Get Back” to its streaming platform. The gargantuan project provided fans with a deep-dive into the band’s “Let It Be” sessions – including footage of their entire rooftop concert, shared in full for the first time. It was an ideal release date, to say the least. After all that delicious food, who doesn’t want to settle in for a lengthy journey into one of the greatest musical acts of all time? Well, in 2025, there’s yet another reason to be grateful: Starting Wednesday, “The Beatles Anthology” documentary series hits Disney+. That’s nine episodes tracing their journey. Lock in.

    — ’Tis the season for Hallmark holiday films. And for the country music fanatic, that means “A Grand Ole Opry Christmas.” The film follows a woman forced to confront her musical past and heritage in the esteemed venue – and there may or may not be some time travel and Christmas magic involved. Stay tuned for the all-star cameos: Brad Paisley, Megan Moroney, Mickey Guyton, Rhett Akins, Tigirlily Gold and more make an appearance. It starts streaming on Hallmark+ Sunday.

    AP Music Writer Maria Sherman

New series to stream from Nov. 24-30

    — It’s hard to believe that “Everybody Loves Raymond” has been off the air for two decades. The multicamera sitcom starred Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton as Ray and Debra Barone, a young married couple whose daily lives are interrupted regularly by Ray’s meddling parents, played by Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts, who live across the street. CBS recently taped a 30th anniversary special to air Monday which will also stream on Paramount+. Hosted by Romano and creator, Phil Rosenthal, it recreates the set of the Barone living room and features interviews with cast members including Romano, Heaton, Brad Garrett and Monica Horan. There will also be a tribute to Boyle and Roberts who died in 2006 and 2016, respectively. It’s fitting for the special to come out around the holidays because its Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes were top-notch. All nine seasons stream on both Paramount+ and Peacock.

    — ” Stranger Things” is finally back with its fifth and final season. Netflix is releasing the sci-fi series in three parts and the first four episodes drop Wednesday. Millie Bobby Brown says fans will “lose their damn minds” with how it ends.

    — Also Monday, Kevin Hart debuts a new comedy special on Netflix. It’s called “Kevin Hart: Acting My Age.” The jokes center around, you guessed it, aging.

    — A new “Family Guy” special on Hulu pokes fun at those holiday movies we all know, love and watch. It’s called “Disney’s Hulu’s Family Guy’s Hallmark Channel’s Lifetime’s Familiar Holiday Movie” and pokes fun at the commonly-used trope of a big city gal who ends up in a small town at Christmas and falls in love. It drops Friday, Nov. 28 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

    — Artificial intelligence: friend to all humanity or existential threat to the planet? In A.I.L.A, Brazilian studio Pulsatrix leans toward the latter. You play as a game tester who’s asked to try out an AI-created horror story. But while you’re busy fighting off ghosts, zombies and ax murderers, the AI may be up to something more nefarious in the background — which could be bad news if you own a smart refrigerator. It all has the potential to be very meta, whether or not you welcome our new robot overlords. It arrives Tuesday on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.

  • Violet Affleck Advocates for Mask Mandates at the United Nations: “I’m Furious”

    [ad_1]

Violet Affleck, eldest child of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, is using her platform to raise awareness. The activist delivered an impassioned speech at the United Nations this week, where she spoke about COVID-19 and long COVID, the most persistent form of the virus. Affleck said that she has been affected by the latter and that such a condition can persist long after recovery, with symptoms ranging from shortness of breath to dizziness.

The 19-year-old, a student at Yale University, strongly criticized the return to a maskless existence, and said that those living with long COVID now cast aside by most of the world. “Leaders tell us that we are the future,” a mask-wearing Affleck began. “But when it comes to the current pandemic, our present is being stolen before our eyes.” She lambasted some leaders for “ignoring, minimizing, and hiding both the prevalence of airborne transmission and the threat of the long COVID.” Affleck continued her remarks by providing information on the virus behind COVID-19, emphasizing the risks to those affected should other people carry it.

It was a heartfelt appeal, during which Affleck said she was “terrified,” especially for children who, in her words, “will not know a world without debilitating pain and exhaustion, who cannot trust their bodies to play, explore, and imagine” because of the contagion. “I’m furious for them,” she added. “It’s first-rate negligence to look children in the eye and say, ‘We know how to protect you, and we didn’t. We have access to technology to prevent airborne diseases, something that millions of our ancestors and millions of people around the world would kill for today, and we refuse to use it.’”

Affleck compared this fight for clean indoor air to another societal action born of a health crisis—the banning of smoking in public places. “We can recognize filtered air as a human right, as intuitively as we do filtered water,” she said. “We can create clean air infrastructure that is so ubiquitous and so obviously necessary, tomorrow’s children don’t even know why we need it.”

This is not the first time Affleck has spoken out on such issues. In 2024, at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she had hoped that good quality masks and testing would be free to the citizenry, reiterating her opposition to a ban on wearing masks. Affleck contracted a post-viral condition that offered her perspective on the long-term consequences of such a disease. More than five years later, Affleck has turned that experience into an opportunity to use her voice for those without a famous last name.

  • Violet Affleck demands clean air at UN but is ‘powerless over dad getting off cigarettes’: expert

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Violet Affleck took the stage at the United Nations (U.N.) to demand clean air and as her father, Hollywood star Ben Affleck, wrestles with his smoking habit.

Wearing a KN95 mask, the 19-year-old Yale freshman addressed the “Healthy Indoor Air: A Global Call to Action” panel Tuesday in New York.

Over four minutes, Violet urged governments to bring back mask mandates, invest in clean-air infrastructure and recognize “filtered air as a human right as intuitively as we do filtered water.”

“We can create clean air infrastructure that is so ubiquitous and so obviously necessary so that tomorrow’s children don’t even know why we need it,” Violet warned delegates.

But one expert with prior connections to Violet’s famous father suggested her clean-air push could be complicated by his smoking.

“Violet will never be happy with the air, and she’s a very sensitive girl,” Rocky Rosen, a Los Angeles smoking cessation trainer, told Fox News Digital. “She wants clean air but also wants dad to be healthy. Violet feels powerless over her father getting off cigarettes.”

Violet is the eldest daughter of Affleck, 53, and his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Garner, 53. The couple, who divorced in 2018 after more than a decade together, also share Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.

Affleck has reportedly wrestled with nicotine addiction for decades, even as Violet campaigns for healthier air.

He’s been photographed smoking in public, including one instance where he pulled down his mask at the height of the pandemic just to light up.

“Smokers like Ben are afraid of two things. He’s probably afraid he can’t stop. He’s probably afraid that he will stop,” Rosen said. “Ben’s very environmentally concerned but, as far as the cigarettes, they just have control over him.”

Rosen emphasized the actor does try to be careful around others.

“Her dad doesn’t smoke near her. I’m sure, as in the pictures you’ll see of him smoking, he’s by himself. So he’s considerate about the air around him when he’s smoking and doesn’t want anybody exposed to his secondhand smoke,” he added.

Ben Affleck Risked a Run-In With J-Lo After Bringing Jen Garner to the Same Event

    [ad_1]

A close one. Ben Affleck narrowly avoided an encounter with his soon-to-be ex-wife Jennifer Lopez at an event in Brentwood, California recently. The plot thickened as Affleck arrived with none other than his former spouse, Jennifer Garner, setting the stage for what could have been a very awkward run-in.

Related: J-Lo Says She’s Still ‘Grateful’ For This One Thing About Ben Amid Their Divorce

In photos obtained by Page Six, the 52-year-old actor appeared to keep things low-key, sporting a casual ensemble of jeans paired with a maroon jacket and shirt. By his side was ex-wife Jennifer Garner, 52, who echoed the laid-back vibe in jeans and a cozy black sweater. Adding to the family affair, the former couple brought along their 15-year-old, Fin.

Meanwhile, J-Lo, 55, made a solo entrance. The pop icon and actress showed up in a chic gray jumpsuit cinched at the waist, complemented by nude heels. She wasn’t entirely alone, though—her 16-year-old, Emme, was part of her entourage, along with a few friends.

This near-miss comes hot on the heels of Lopez’s candid interview with comedian Nikki Glaser, where she opened up about her recent split from Affleck. “Everything that I’ve done over the past 25, 30 years, being in these different challenging situations, what can I f—king do when it’s just me flying on my own … what if I’m just free?” Lopez shared, hinting at her newfound independence.

The “On the Floor” singer didn’t hold back, describing her post-breakup journey as “lonely, unfamiliar, scary, sad” and even “desperate.” However, she’s quick to add a silver lining: “When you sit in those feelings and go, ‘These things are not going to kill me,’ it’s like, ‘Actually, I am capable of joy and happiness all by myself.’”

Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024, marking the end of her two-year marriage with Affleck. The couple’s whirlwind romance had captivated fans since their reunion in 2021, following their initial engagement back in the early 2000s.

While Lopez seems ready to bare her soul about the split, sources close to Affleck suggest he’s taking a different approach. An insider revealed to OK! Magazine that Affleck “didn’t get a heads up” about Lopez’s recent interview. “Ben knows that she will talk about the breakup forever,” the source added. “He would love for her not to talk about it, but he feels she will always speak out.”

Despite their differing coping mechanisms, the source emphasized that Affleck is “OK with however Jen has to deal with it,” recognizing that “People deal with loss and breakup in their own way.”

J-Lo Says She’s Still ‘Grateful’ For This One Thing About Ben Amid Their Divorce

    [ad_1]

It seems Jennifer Lopez is taking the high road when it comes to her recent split from Ben Affleck. Despite filing for divorce just months ago, the This Is Me Now star is reportedly focusing on the positives from their two-year marriage.

Related: J-Lo & Ben Affleck Just Reunited For a Surprising Reason Amid Their Divorce

A source close to Lopez recently opened up to People magazine, revealing that the singer isn’t letting the divorce get her down. Instead, she’s cherishing the “beautiful memories” she shared with Affleck during their time together.

“This has been one of the hardest years for Jennifer,” the insider confided. They went on to explain that Lopez didn’t exactly jump at the chance to end her marriage. “She didn’t want to file for divorce. She just felt like she had no choice. Nothing was gonna change with Ben.”

But in true J-Lo fashion, she’s not letting this setback dim her spotlight. The source added, “She was very upset about it. But true to her positive outlook on life, she’s moving forward with optimism.” It seems Lopez is taking this opportunity to focus on herself, viewing this chapter as a necessary part of her journey rather than a failure. “Instead of feeling like she’s fallen flat on her face, she sees it was meant to be,” the insider shared. “She’s taking time for herself right now.”

At the end of the day, Lopez isn’t blind to how lucky she is, either. The source noted, “She knows she lives a privileged life in so many ways. She’s very grateful for all the beautiful memories with Ben, but she’s now focused on creating the best future for herself and her kids.”

In a recent chat with Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine, Lopez herself echoed these sentiments. When asked if she had any regrets about her relationship with Affleck, the 55-year-old star didn’t mince words: “Not for one second.”

She then dove into a candid reflection on the experience, saying, “That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good. It almost did. But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘F—k, that is exactly what I needed. Thank you, god. I’m sorry it took me so long. I’m sorry that you had to do this to me so many times. I should have learned it two or three times ago. I get it. You had to hit me really hard over the head with a f—ing sledgehammer. You dropped the house on me. Don’t have to do it again.’”

Jennifer Lopez, Brett Goldstein to Star in Netflix Rom-Com ‘Office Romance’

    [ad_1]

Jennifer Lopez has clearly gotten a kick out of her recent Netflix films, as the performer is preparing to return to the streamer for her next feature.

Lopez and Ted Lasso standout Brett Goldstein are set to star in the Netflix rom-com Office Romance, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Goldstein is writing the script with Joe Kelly. Plot details have not been shared, and a director is not yet attached.

Earlier this year, Lopez starred in director Brad Peyton’s Netflix sci-fi flick Atlas, opposite Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown. Prior to that, she led the streamer’s 2023 action film The Mother for director Niki Caro.

Lopez’s next movie is director William Goldenberg’s sports drama Unstoppable, which Amazon MGM Studios is set to release in December after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. Centering on real-life wrestler Anthony Robles, the film counts Matt Damon and Lopez’s estranged husband Ben Affleck as producers.

The actress is known for her work in the romantic comedy space, having starred in popular titles including The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan. Lopez’s more recent offerings include Marry Me and Shotgun Wedding.

Goldstein is a two-time Emmy Award winner for his breakout role as Roy Kent on the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. His other credits include the romantic feature All of You, which premiered at TIFF this month, while he co-created the Apple TV+ series Shrinking.

Kelly worked as a writer and executive producer on Ted Lasso. He has also written for Detroiters, Saturday Night Live and How I Met Your Mother.

Deadline was first to report on Office Romance.

J-Lo & Ben Affleck Just Reunited For a Surprising Reason Amid Their Divorce

    [ad_1]

In a surprising turn of events, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck reunited for the first time since their divorce filing. The pair were spotted together at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles over the weekend, leaving fans and onlookers curious about the real reasons behind their meetup.

The former power couple, who filed for divorce in August after two years of marriage, seemed to put their differences aside for the sake of their blended family. Photographs from the outing, first shared by the anonymous celebrity gossip account @deuxmoi on Instagram, show Affleck in his signature casual style—a royal blue button-down shirt paired with jeans and sunglasses—while Lopez opted for a black turtleneck and dark wash flare jeans that highlighted her famous curves.

This family outing is particularly noteworthy, however, given recent reports about the couple’s relationships with each other’s children. According to People magazine, a source previously claimed in August 2024 that the Oscar winner had already “not been in touch” with Lopez’s 16-year-old twins, Max and Emme, for quite some time. “The fact that he has not seen her kids in a long time, it’s like he left,” the insider revealed at the time.

However, the same source pointed out that Lopez has maintained a close bond with Affleck’s children, Violet, Fin, and Samuel, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner. “She keeps in touch with the children, and she’s a good mom,” the source added of J-Lo. Her commitment to their blended family has been pretty clear in recent months, with Lopez spotted at Samuel’s graduation ceremony in June and bonding with Violet in the Hamptons in July.

Despite the challenges of navigating their high-profile divorce, both Lopez and Affleck now seem determined to prioritize their children’s well-being. As one insider told People, “Family is very important to both of them, and together they were family people — and the connection doesn’t end.” During happier times, Lopez even praised Affleck’s parenting skills publicly. “[Jennifer] went out there and told the world what a great dad he was,” a source shared. Now, this recent outing at the Beverly Hills Hotel could be seen as a step towards establishing a new normal for their blended family.

J-Lo and Affleck’s divorce proceedings continue, with Lopez citing April 26, 2024, as the date of separation. Their $60 million marital mansion is now up for sale, symbolizing the end of “Bennifer 2.0”. However, there’s a silver lining. During their time together, Lopez reportedly helped Affleck “become a family man again,” as one source put it, an influence that appears to be lasting even as they navigate their separation.

  • J-Lo Wore a Barely-There Naked Dress to Her Joint Film Premiere With Ben Affleck

J-Lo Wore a Barely-There Naked Dress to Her Joint Film Premiere With Ben Affleck

    [ad_1]

In a move that screams “eat your heart out,” Jennifer Lopez strutted down the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet in a jaw-dropping naked dress that left little to the imagination. The 55-year-old sensation was there to promote her latest film, Unstoppable, which she produced with none other than her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Ben Affleck.

Just weeks after filing for divorce from Affleck, J-Lo proved she’s living up to her film’s name in a Tamara Ralph creation that can only be described as sartorial revenge. The gown featured dazzling silver mirror embroidery with completely open sides, held together by strategically placed black velvet bows, leaving her iconic curves on full display. It’s safe to say this look will go down in the annals of revenge dressing history.

While Ben was noticeably absent from the premiere (despite his producer credit on the film), J-Lo didn’t seem to mind flying solo at the September 6 event. She completed her show-stopping ensemble with sky-high metallic platforms, a matching Judith Leiber clutch, and enough Hassanzadeh diamonds to blind the paparazzi.

    Getty Images.

An insider recently told People magazine that Ben and J-Lo’s divorce “has the potential to get ugly” due to some financial sticking points. With no prenup in place and J-Lo’s net worth reportedly double that of Affleck’s net worth, things could get interesting. But if this red carpet appearance is any indication, Lopez is too busy shining to worry about the details.

Despite the couple’s recent split, the film’s director, William Goldenberg, was also quick to squash any rumors of post-production drama. He recently told Variety, “Everybody’s a professional, and that’s their own personal thing. I love them both. I mean, I know Ben better, but Jennifer was literally a dream to work with. She was incredible.”

Interestingly, Ben had nothing but praise for working with J-Lo on Unstoppable back in March. He gushed to CBS Sunday Morning, “What fun, what a joy to do something with her, see her be great, go to work with your wife, go to work with your best friend.”

According to Page Six, Affleck was busy looking surprisingly chipper in Los Angeles during the film’s debut at TIFF. But his BFF and longtime collaborator Matt Damon showed up to support the film, which was produced by their company Artists Equity. Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso walked the red carpet, with Matt even posing for a few (likely awkward) group photos with J-Lo.

As for the film itself? It’s based on the inspiring true story of wrestler Anthony Robles. But let’s be real—after this red carpet moment, all anyone will be talking about is J-Lo’s naked dress and the art of looking fabulous as ever post-breakup.

‘Unstoppable’ Review: Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez Bring Grit and Determination to Conventional but Crowd-Pleasing Sports Bio

    [ad_1]

Inspirational sports dramas usually share key elements — struggle, setbacks, perseverance and hard-fought triumph. Even more effective if the movie centers on a disadvantaged protagonist, either economically or physically, to inject that underdog spirit. Debuting director William Goldenberg has all of that in Unstoppable, the incredible true story of wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg but never let that stop him from going after his dream. The special sauce here, however, is the bond of love and support through tough times between Anthony and his mother Judy, stirringly portrayed by Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez.

Goldenberg is an Oscar-winning editor whose collaborations with lead producer Ben Affleck stretch from Gone Baby Gone through last year’s Air. The latter is an entertaining account of a pivotal moment in the evolution of Nike and there’s a pleasing continuum in the fact that Robles was the first sportsperson signed as a Nike Athlete after he had retired from competitive participation in his field. This moving portrait of him will open in select U.S. and U.K. theaters in December, streaming on Prime Video soon after.

    Unstoppable

    The Bottom Line

    Exerts a hold.

Venue: Toronto International Film Festival (Gala Presentations)
Cast: Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Anthony Robles, Mykelti Williamson, Don Cheadle, Jennifer Lopez, Shawn Hatosy, Johnni DiJulius
    Director: William Goldenberg
Screenwriters: Eric Champnella, Alex Harris, John Hindman

    Rated PG-13,
    1 hour 56 minutes

Unstoppable makes winking acknowledgement that it’s not trying to reinvent the formula. A strategically placed Rocky poster on the wall of the garage at home where Anthony works out is one tipoff; another is having him run on crutches up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, placing his foot in the print of Rocky Balboa’s trainers, embedded in concrete at the top. It’s a potentially cheeseball moment that instead has an endearing effect, which is characteristic of a movie in which every tearjerking moment fully earns its emotions.

Adapting Robles’ 2012 book, screenwriters Eric Champnella, Alex Harris and John Hindman trace the wrestler’s trajectory from his senior year at Mesa High School in Arizona, when he became a national champion, through his quest, in his final year of eligibility, to win the National Collegiate Athletics Association championship, competing for Arizona State University.

It’s clear from the start that Anthony’s disability doesn’t earn him pity points and clearer still in the proud tenacity of Jerome’s performance that what he wants is exactly the opposite. He’s a young man with a firm goal in his head to become a champion as a way to make people see his achievements first, and not his missing right leg. He has staunch backup every step of the way from Lopez’s Judy, who never gives up on her son, even when she has her own volatile domestic life to manage.

Despite his impressive record in high school wrestling and all the major college scouts having witnessed him in winning form, Anthony gets turned down by his top choices, led by the University of Iowa, whose fabled Hawkeyes are considered titans in the sport. Both Judy and Anthony’s high school coach Bobby Williams (Michael Peña) urge him to accept the full four-year scholarship being offered by Philly’s Drexel University, in fact the only school that wants him. But strong-willed Anthony is hesitant given Drexel’s complete lack of any NCAA wrestling profile.

Out of respect for Williams, Coach Sean Charles (Don Cheadle) at Arizona State agrees to see Anthony. But he’s frank with the kid about ASU already having a full roster of recruits lined up to vie for the wrestling program’s 33 spots and says it’s highly unlikely Anthony would make the team as a walk on (a non-scholarship player). But Anthony is not easily deterred.

At home, Anthony’s father has long been out of the picture. He’s something of a hero to his four younger half-siblings, born after Judy got together with prison guard Rick (Bobby Cannavale). Anthony adores the kids but has a more contentious relationship with his stepfather, a blowhard whose authoritarian streak comes out when he’s banging on about the necessity of making choices in life. All Rick’s blustery “real man” talk is exposed as a sham when it’s revealed that he’s let down the family in a way that could cost them their home. And his treatment of Judy increasingly sets off alarm bells with Anthony.

Goldenberg and the writers deftly balance out the domestic drama with Anthony’s progress at ASU, where he works harder than anyone else in tryouts and shows formidable determination in an arduous three-mile mountain hike, his crutches slipping more than once on the uneven, rocky path. His endurance impresses Coach Charles, but it’s his strength of will on the mats that ultimately wins him a spot.

Robles, who’s now in his 30s, serves as a stunt double for the wrestling scenes in wide and medium shots, with Jerome spliced into the latter and taking over entirely in tight shots. The sports action is visceral and looks painfully real, the violent force of slams and flips likely causing many in the audience to flinch. (OK, I did.)

There are the requisite threats of the dream being snatched away from Anthony, notably when ASU cuts the wrestling program for a year and it’s reinstated thanks to alumni donations but with a reduced team. It’s at that point that the rousing support of Anthony’s teammates becomes evident and as he starts notching up wins, he becomes a favorite with the crowds.

The movie could be accused of aggressively going for the tear ducts when Coach Williams delivers a box stuffed with fan mail from kids inspired by Anthony’s example, encouraging Judy to read them and giving her credit for raising an exceptional young man. Some of Coach Charles’ dialogue toward the end of the film, acknowledging his failure to see Anthony’s capabilities, also spells out in emphatic terms a realization already apparent in the warmth and profound decency of Cheadle’s performance.

But any sense of emotional manipulation in the script is more than justified by the extraordinary human drama of Robles’ story. Alexandre Desplat’s lovely score — which ranges from Ry Cooder-esque guitars to soulful strings and surging piano passages — brings welcome restraint for this type of movie, perhaps knowing that Anthony’s authenticity can stand on its own, without the need for strenuous musical uplift.

The contrast between Rick’s overbearing presence and the stalwart support of both coaches is poignant, and both Peña and Cheadle nail the ways in which their characters’ profession requires them to be as much motivational psychologists as sports strategists.

The dominant relationship though is the mutually protective one between Anthony and his mother. After a couple of disposable Netflix movies in which she was basically playing JLo in the frozen wilderness and JLo in space, Lopez sinks into the character here with a layered performance as Judy, full of pain, pride, bitter disappointment in herself and then unexpected resilience and resourcefulness as she tackles the bank controlling their mortgage.

Some might argue that Judy initially looks a bit glam for a mother of five who clips coupons in a household that’s barely getting by. But Lopez gives a tender and entirely convincing performance as a mother whose unshakeable belief in her son is a crucial part of his foundations.

In his first lead role in a feature, Jerome — who memorably showed the conflicting sides of teenage Kevin, the love of Chiron’s life in Moonlight, and won an Emmy for Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us — is excellent. He gives the movie a fierce beating heart as a young man who remains vulnerable yet refuses to be defined by what others perceive as his weakness.

Given the rules of this biographical subgenre and the fact that the title itself is pretty much a spoiler, there’s no doubt about where the story is headed. But as Anthony obsessively watches videos of the undefeated wrestler destined to be his championship opponent — and winces at the macho arrogance of his coach (Shawn Hatosy), who says, “At Iowa, we believe second is the same as last” — it’s impossible not to root for this guy imbued with such extraordinary fighting spirit or to be moved by his unyielding fortitude.

Goldenberg fumbles a brief coda designed to show how Anthony’s achievements have been celebrated and continue to inspire, which seems both pedestrian and unnecessary. But that minor misstep takes nothing away from the rewards of Unstoppable.

Love don’t cost a thing, but making a movie does. Even though it would’ve been understandable if Jennifer Lopez wanted to stay out of the spotlight after her latest heartbreak, she put in work to promote her based-on-a-true-story sports drama Unstoppable at its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6. It was her first public appearance since she filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, who produced the film but did not attend the premiere. (He was photographed in Los Angeles earlier that day, with People reporting that he appeared to be on his way to work.) Several outlets declared that J.Lo’s sparkly, side-slit TIFF attire was a “revenge dress.” But regardless of what motives she might’ve had when sharing pics of her outfit on Instagram, Lopez made sure to mention Unstoppable in the captions of both posts.

She also posed on the red carpet for group photos, at one point standing just one Don Cheadle away from Affleck’s close friend and fellow Unstoppable producer Matt Damon. During part of a premiere conversation shared on social media by Peter Gray, she fielded questions about her character Judy, the mother of wrestler Anthony Robles — an NCAA champion who was born with one leg — and four other children. “When I read the script, I felt like so many women, including myself, could relate to the struggles she had gone through in life,” said Lopez, adding that the film is “a Latino story” and “so inspiring.” Judy was brought on stage during the event, and Lopez was filmed hugging her as the TIFF audience got to its feet and applauded after the screening. • Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon (but No Ben Affleck) Bring Inspirational Sports Drama ‘Unstoppable’ to Toronto

Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon (but No Ben Affleck) Bring Inspirational Sports Drama ‘Unstoppable’ to Toronto

    [ad_1]

Jenny from the Block made her way to the Six for the premiere of “Unstoppable,” a heartfelt sports drama that debuted on Friday at the Toronto Film Festival.

Jennifer Lopez, who stars as a fiercely supportive mother of five, worked on the film with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, whose production company Artists Equity served as producers. Affleck was absent from the festival (he and Lopez filed for divorce in August after less than two years of marriage), but his company co-founder and friend Matt Damon attended the premiere and walked the red carpet.

Despite the gloomy weather, swarms of fans gathered by the red carpet for a glimpse — and maybe even photo — of Lopez and her co-stars Jharrel Jerome, Don Cheadle and Bobby Cannavale.

“Unstoppable” stars Jerome (“Moonlight”) as a college wrestler who dreams of going professional. It’s based on the inspirational true story of Anthony Robles, who was born without a right leg and developed the strength and skills to meet the demands of Arizona State University’s wrestling team.

During the screening, audience members at the Roy Thomson Hall broke into applause several times and sniffled at more poignant moments in the film. All of the talent sat in the audience through the movie, though Cannavale ducked out midway through and returned with popcorn. As the end credits rolled, the real Robles was embraced with a two-minute standing ovation. During the applause, Cheadle waved to the crowd as Damon told the younger stars, “Great job, guys. Awesome.”

During a post-screening Q&A, Robles basked in the warm embrace and second standing ovation of the night.

“It’s still hitting me tonight,” he said. “I’m so proud. I couldn’t be any happier.”

Lopez, who also received a heartfelt greeting from the crowd, expressed a kinship with Anthony’s mother Judy Robles, who endures physical and mental hardships while supporting her son’s dreams.

“When I read the script I felt like so many woman including myself could relate to the struggles she’s gone through,” Lopez said. “The story being Latino was so inspiring. It grabbed me.”

Though Lopez has portrayed real people before, like in the biopic “Selena,” she wasn’t always able to connect to them to shape her performance. For “Unstoppable,” she appreciated getting to Zoom with Judy.

“This was a different experience,” Lopez added. “We were the same person in a way. The core and the heart of who we are — at first, we are moms.”

Judy Robles, who attended the premiere and participated in the Q&A, commended Lopez’s acting chops. She told her on-screen surrogate: “You were me — with the sass, but also the sadness and pain. Bobby, you scared me.”

“But in a funny way?” Cannavale, who plays her abusive husband, joked.

William Goldenberg, an Oscar winner who worked as an editor of Affleck’s films “Argo” and “Air,” directed “Unstoppable” in his feature debut. He said he was “blessed” to have Affleck and Damon as partners.

“They supported me and set me up for success. I appreciate everything they’ve done,” he said. “I worked with Ben for almost 20 years as an editor. His faith in me exceeded my faith in myself.”
