Short velvet nails are autumn’s most attractive manicure
All you need is a velvet effect magnetic polish, a semi-permanent base coat, a top coat and a special magnet for the technique.
First, we will prepare the nails by filing them and removing any remaining shine. Apply the base coat and cure in the lamp. Then, we will spread a layer of magnetic polish and, before curing, we will approach the magnet with soft movements to direct the reflection of the light and create the effect we want. Depending on the distance and the direction in which it is approached, it will allow us to create different effects and shapes: hearts, stripes, squares, etc. Once the desired effect is achieved, cure again and seal with the top coat. Extra tip: if you are looking for a more intense finish, apply a second coat of magnetic polish.
To achieve professional-looking velvet nails, keep in mind that in the most intense tones like reds, greens, or blues amplify the depth, while in soft colours like grey, beige or powdered pink, the texture becomes more discreet, but just as elegant. The range of possibilities is numerous, and allows the velvet effect to be applied in many other ways, from a subtle version, only on the tip of the classic French manicure, to more daring designs with abstract nail arts, gradients or metallic chrome details that provide a futuristic air. As we enter cosy season and you’re picking out boots and socks, it’s a no-brainer to start thinking about autumn pedicure ideas. Although pedicures shine the most during summertime, we can all agree that clean and polished toes are always in season. You’ve probably already saved autumn nail ideas and autumn hair colours to your moodboard, so why not give your pedi a seasonal makeover too?
“Just like manicures, pedicures take on a seasonal shift, and autumn is the moment to lean into richer tones and elevated finishes,” says Juanita Huber-Millet, the founder and creative director of luxury nail salon Townhouse in Beverly Hills. “Think deep burgundy for a polished, statement-making look or a sumptuous chocolate brown for that chic, cosy vibe, perfect against soft knits and ankle boots. For something more fashion-forward, a glazed chrome overlay gives pedicures a toasted, luminous edge that feels effortlessly modern.”

What pedicure nail colours are trending this autumn?
You can never go wrong with autumnal tones that evoke the changing leaves and cosy season. “Deep burgundy, chocolate, and espresso shades perfectly capture the essence of autumn, making them a versatile choice for everything from casual days to more refined occasions,” says Huber-Millet.
If you’re into nail art, there’s room for unconventional pops of colour — possibly from your favourite summer nail polishes. According to celebrity nail artist Elle Gerstein, these colours can be incorporated to create a seasonal mix. She also references colours and textures that are popular this time of year to help inform your look. “Leather, sweater textures, animal textures (but not necessarily prints) and metallic finishes,” Gerstein says. “Right now, everything is playing off light and heavy and soft and hard and combining it. Sepia is a big trend for autumn; it’s the same tone done over and over, but make it lighter or darker, whether that’s making it jelly, less opaque.”
And last, we can’t forget the Pantone colour of the year, which is perfect for cool weather. “One of the strongest directions for fall pedicures this year is the rise of cocoa-inspired shades,” says nail artist and educator Sofiia Mazur. “Mocha mousse perfectly reflects this trend. Expect to see a range of shades, from soft latte beiges to rich chocolate browns, taking centre stage. These warm neutrals not only feel seasonal but also pair beautifully with cosy autumn fashion.”

‘Bambi brunette’ is autumn’s biggest hair colour trend for cosy girls
Summer is the time of year when we typically lighten up, but right now we’re seeing the hair colour pendulum swing in favour of ‘bambi brunette’ – the of-the-moment hue that hair colourist Mark Leeson describes as “a soft, warm, light-reflective take on brown hair.“
Right now you’ll see different iterations of this expensive-looking brunette trend on celebrities including Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber and Zendaya. But how exactly does it differ from a regular brunette shade?

Bambi brunette is essentially all about dimension. “It’s almost like you’ve had a summer of sun on your hair, but in a really understated, chic way,” Mark says. “Think gentle caramel and beige tones woven through a brunette base to give it a velvety, doe-eyed glow – hence the name. It feels more modern, glossy and multidimensional than a block brunette.”
This on-trend hue is also ideal for autumn when we naturally crave more warmth in our hair colour. “Bambi brunette brings softness and richness to the hair, but without tipping into overly dark or heavy territory,” says Mark. “It’s the perfect in-between – rich enough to feel seasonal, but with a lightness that keeps the face bright.”
What should you ask your hairstylist for?
The big thing to note is that placement is key. “Ask your colourist for a soft brunette base with lighter warm, caramel accents threaded throughout, particularly around the face and mid-lengths,” Mark advises. “These need to be fine and blended, so it feels seamless rather than stripy. The idea is to add dimension and glow without it looking like traditional highlights.”

How do you keep the shade looking vibrant?
Gloss and condition are everything with bambi brunette. “If the hair isn’t shiny, you lose the effect,” says Mark. Top-up glosses in salon will keep that light-reflective finish but, at home, he recommends using Goldwell’s Dualsenses Color Extra Rich 60 Sec Treatment to lock in luminosity. Also be sure to include a colour protective shampoo in your routine such as L’Oreal Elvive Colour Protect Colour Protecting Shampoo and add shine with a targeted serum or treatment.

Selena Gomez’s ‘toasted’ nude nails are the perfect autumn-coded manicure
Nude manicures aren’t going anywhere if our current obsession with BB cream nails is anything to go by. Now Selena Gomez‘s latest manicure has made a case for ‘toasted’ nude nails.
In an Instagram post on 7 September, her go-to nail artist Tom Bachik revealed Selena’s new set. Her short, squoval-shaped nails were painted a deep beige colour infused with iridescent peach pearls, courtesy of Essie’s Special Effect Line in Liquid Sunrise – seemingly an ode to the pictured sunrise on Selena Gomez’s Rare T-shirt.
In the caption Tom wrote, “Trend Alert 💅🏼 Toasted Mani for Fall 🌅💖” – clearly signposting that ‘toasted’ shades were going to be huge for AW25. And it’s not hard to see why. Selena’s ‘toasted manicure’ is the perfect shade of golden hour light. It offers something different to summer’s milky pink nail: it hits the sweet spot between being neutral but also bang on trend for cosy season. It’s warm, understated and leans into the autumnal colour palette.

How to do the toasted mani at home
The appeal of the toasted mani lies in its simplicity – think neatly shaped cuticles, clean edges and polish with the merest hint of shimmer that takes the toasted nail seamlessly from office to bar.
To get Selena Gomez’s toasted nail look, Tom wrote, “we always start with my favorite @tweezerman tools for a meticulous mani. For Sel’s mani we used @essie’s Special Effect line in ‘Liquid Sunrise’. I finished the look off with my favorite top coat, @shoptombachik Click Colors in ‘Super Clear’ (TPO-Free!).”
So first, trim your nails by clipping straight across to create short tips and file the top edge of the nail into a straight line before rounding the edges.
While Selena’s shade of choice, Liquid Sunrise, isn’t available in the UK, there are several brilliant alternatives that allow you to play with similar chrome-like beige, rose gold and nude bronze hues.

TikTok’s contrast makeup theory promises a next-level glow-up
Let’s talk about contrast makeup. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have already seen the trend blowing up the FYP with a method of applying makeup that takes in your features to work out the most stunning and effortless look for you. Sounds good, right?
What is contrast makeup?
In a nutshell, the concept looks at the contrast between your hair, eyes and skin tone to determine the best approach to doing your makeup. It centres around the idea of keeping everything low contrast and unified so that your whole makeup look works cohesively, versus one feature standing out. Depending on your natural colouring, there are tweaks you can make to keep things looking effortless. The trend was spearheaded by French makeup artist, Alieenor, who has created a series of TikTok videos on finding your contrast and even created a filter to help you work out what your contrast is. You select your skin tone level, then check it against low, medium or high contrast examples to work out your match.

Low contrast makeup
If you’re low contrast, it means your features – your skin tone, hair colour and eye colour – are similar in tone, whether they’re all deep, all medium or all fair. “When you have low contrast, you have more harmony on your face. Everything is less harsh, everything seems soft and very ‘the same’ because it’s in the same grey-scale [if you were to look at the image in black and white],” explains Alieenor.
As for how to apply this to getting ready, it means you get to do that no-makeup-makeup look. You have very unified features already. If you do a really intense eye or lip look, that would become the focus of your makeup, which means you don’t see your face as a whole, so it helps if you keep you makeup soft and in-keeping.

If you’re medium contrast, it means your skin colour varies a fair amount from your hair and eye colour. For example, if you’re hair is a shade or two darker than your skin tone or vice versa, “you’re kind of in the middle,” says Alieenor. “Sometimes you have to tweak a little bit of your makeup to harmonise everything and have something that is a little bit less harsh, to appear more ethereal and natural,” she explains.

Balayage vs highlights: which is right for you?
Because of how they’re applied, the results vary, too: “Balayage is relatively low maintenance while highlights require much more maintenance and upkeep, as regrowth at the roots can be more noticeable, requiring more frequent touch-ups,” Chase explains, adding that balayage tends to look “soft, blended, and more subtle with a gradual lightening effect” while highlights are “more structured and defined, with distinct lighter sections that start from the roots.”
There are also variations in how each style grows out: “Balayage has a more graceful grow out as it lives in a vertical spaces versus highlights which grows out horizontally,” says Min, who notes that because of this, balayage is generally ideal for someone looking for a lived-in, low-maintenance look, whereas highlights might be more suited for clients who want more pronounced lightness.
Balayage Vs Highlights: Which is right for me?
When it comes to choosing which technique to pursue, Lorena M. Valdes, a colourist at Maxine Salon, suggests considering your hair goals as well as your hair’s texture and density. “If your density gets thinner towards the ends, it may be a candidate for balayage or a combination, since highlights can result in a brighter overall look quicker but may need a few sessions to get the ends fully saturated,” she explains.
On the other hand, Renée’s choice between the two typically depends on the level of lightness and the desired final look. Just remember, the lighter you go, the more upkeep required, which can potentially be more damaging on hair. Min thinks the best way to decide is to think about how much maintenance you want to commit to, the overall look you’re going for, and your existing colour history. (This is especially important if you box dye your hair.)
“If you want something that grows out more naturally and requires fewer touch-ups, balayage is ideal, but if you prefer a brighter, more uniform colour, or if you like a noticeable change between your base colour and the lighter pieces, highlights are a great choice,” Min says, adding that sometimes a combination of both works really well, especially if you want dimension but with pops of brightness.
The best candidates for balayage
“Balayage works well for almost all hair types, but it’s especially great for those with medium to long hair, as the technique really shines when there’s length to work with,” says Min. “It’s also ideal for people who want low-maintenance colour since the softer transitions in balayage mean you don’t need to touch up as often as with traditional highlights. It’s perfect for someone looking for a natural, sun-kissed effect.”
The best candidates for highlights
“Highlights are fantastic for anyone looking to add dimension and brightness to their hair. This technique works well on all hair types, but it’s especially beneficial for those with shorter hair or those who prefer a more structured, uniform lightness throughout,” says Min.
“If you like your colour to be noticeable, or if you’re aiming for a high-contrast look, highlights are a great option. It’s also a great option if someone has previous all over (dark) colour as the foils will help to break through some of the built-up colour better in some cases than with balayage (depends on the overall desired result).”
Experts universally advise consulting with a hair care professional. “To determine which technique is most flattering, it’s essential to have a detailed consultation with your colourist,” Renée asserts. “They can help assess what aligns with your goals and is best suited for your lifestyle and maintenance commitment.”
Maintaining balayage and highlights
While the application techniques may differ, balayage and highlights maintenance is pretty much the same. “For any lightening service, proper home care is crucial to maintaining your colour and protecting your investment,” says Renée, whose colour care products of choice include R+Co Sunset Blvd Daily Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner and Gemstone Color Shampoo and Conditioner.
“For maintaining both balayage and highlights, I always recommend a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner that is colour-safe,” Min says. “One of my go-to products is the L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox – it neutralises metals in the hair (which we all have thanks to water), resulting in stronger hair that’s less dull and more manageable.” For clients with blonde or lighter highlights however, Kim suggests a purple shampoo like the L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Shampoo to neutralise any unwanted brassiness.
“Additionally, a good hair mask like the L’Oréal Professionnel Absolut Repair Mask is essential to keep hair nourished and hydrated between salon visits,” she adds.

London Fashion Week Spring 2025: Best Hair and Makeup According to Our Editors – POPSUGAR Australia
London Fashion Week was back this weekend for its bi-annual onslaught of the city, where the famous and fabulous spend the weekend travelling from designer shows to parties dressed in their very best. It is always a spectacle for the senses and whether you’re into fashion or not, it can be very tempting to get swept up in the glamour of it all if you visiting the capital during LFW.
As it draws to a close, and the fash pack head to Paris for the next designer display, I thought it would be fun to look at some of the trends the PS UK team have picked out as their favourite beauty looks tipped to be big for spring 2025. As a former beauty editor, I spent years travelling to all four fashion capitals, starting in New York, then back home to London before heading to Paris and Milan to see the trends being created in real time. This was the era of no social media and the only way we would see the beauty looks was by being there – which included many 5am starts and very little sleep for a month.
Things have changed somewhat now and you will receive show reports and images almost immediately, meaning you can save your soles (literally) and learn the trends from the comfort of your own home. You may still be wondering if these trends are relevant to you and so I turn to the words of Miranda Priestly in the Devil Wears Prada (quite frankly one of the most iconic characters of all time): “‘This stuff’? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don’t know that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you are trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then i think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room, from a pile of stuff.”
Well, it’s the same for beauty. The world doesn’t just wake up one day and think textured hair is out and now it’s all about the photo high-shine finish. This look would have been created by one of the geniuses backstage and after a while it filters down to the public. And with that, these are a few of our favourite LFW Spring 2025 looks we predict you will all be wearing next year.

We’ve spotted a shade that’s perfect for the slope down toward autumn. Fox hair colour is as flirty and feline as it sounds and it’s openly picking up momentum amongst girls in the know. In fact, it was named as one of autumn’s top beauty trends by Pinterest after the picture platform noticed a 1530% explosion in searches.
Like it’s name suggests fox hair colour mimics the slinky, rust-coloured red of a fox’s coat. It sits perfectly between golden copper, fiery red and medium brunette. And alongside offering up a whole dose of sultriness with its vixen-inspired colour palette, it’s also beautiful, warm, rich and cosy, ready for when autumn hits. In the meantime, the fiery shade can hold its own when lit up by what’s left of the summer sunshine.
We love the versatility of fox red hair, it can add some subtle or statement impact, depending on how much you want to play up those russet tones. Wear it all over, or we’ve even seen a rendition of fox hair colour that ombres from ambery copper into deep mahogany red like a fox’s tail.
The beauty is that even though it brings more vibrancy, the brunette base helps to ground the colour and keep it feeling wearable and low-key versus hi-vis reds. And, it looks great on all skin tones, too. You just have to pay attention to undertones and tweak the temperature to you – whether you want warmer, orangey-copper tones or a cooler scarlet coming through.
And, despite its high-maintenance reputation, leaning into a more muted red with a darker brunette base means the upkeep can be kept more minimal. You can maintain the shade with colour depositing tints like Moroccanoil’s Color Depositing Mask in Copper, Wella’s Color Fresh mask in Copper Glow, DP Hue’s Gloss in Copper and TRESemme’s Color Enhancing Hair Mask in Warm Red that add a fiery (and foxy) glow to brunettes without expensive regular salon visits. Blake Lively is launching a beauty brand
Put down the Fenty and step away from the Rare; there’s a new celebrity beauty brand in town. Blake Lively has been laying the social media groundwork for a new project in the beauty space for some time.
The star of A Simple Favor and It Ends With Us beagn following an Instagram account called Blake Brown Beauty, and it follows her back. In fact, Lively’s is the only account the new page follows.
The first picture posted to the account four days ago was the back of a woman’s head – and it looks a whole lot like Blake’s signature honey blonde hair. It heavily hinted toward a hair brand.
Then on 31st July, Blake answered all our questions with a post confirming the launch of her new beauty brand. “Ever since I was a kid, through adolescence, early adulthood, motherhood, work, personal life, whenever, wherever, the single most identifiable part about me has always been my personalit— no? Not my personality? Oh… My hair,” she said.
“It’s my longest companion in life. For 36 years and counting. And like any relationship, it’s healthiest when you take good care of each other. To love it well, I’ve found a system that has worked wonders for me, a hack of sorts through decades of working with the very best people in the industry, and silly amounts of trial and error. I spent 7 years (I know. It toggles between impressive and wtf took so long) obsessively developing every detail of my newest baby, @blakebrownbeauty,” she explained.

Dakota Johnson gave us a lesson in the perfect vintage summer updo
Dakota Johnson is definitely high on our list of style crushes. She never puts a foot wrong when it comes to serving up equally covetable and wearable and classic outfits. Likewise her hairstyle and statement fringe was giving us timeless inspo waaay before TikTok sold us on quiet luxury.

Why Solar Scents Are Becoming the Must Have Fragrances for 2024 – POPSUGAR Australia
Close your eyes. Now imagine you’re sitting on a sun lounger, on a white sandy beach, with the sound of waves softly crashing in the distance. As you take a deep breathe what can you smell? If your imagination is not quite up to the task it may be time to invest in this summer’s new fragrance category known as solar scents. Designed to smell like sunshine and evoke memories of summer and happy times, it is no surprise the perfume world has seen an increase in popularity for fragrance which give you an uplifting holiday feeling – no passport required.
As someone who believes in the power of scent, and always takes a new perfume on holiday so I can scent my memories, this is right up my street. I’m also not one for a signature scent, although there are benefits to finding “the one”, I believe perfumes should be free-flowing and you should be able to use as many as you like.
The connection between scent and wellbeing could be the reason there has seen such an interest in solar scents according to Alex Oprey, Marketing and E-commerce Director at Miller Harris. “Solar scents often evoke positive and uplifting emotions,” he says tells PS UK. “It taps into the increasing focus we are seeing on well-being and mental health. These scents can offer a sensory escape, transporting you to sunnier shores and carefree vacations, which many people find comforting and rejuvenating.”
But, what do solar scents actually smell like and do you need one? We asked two fragrance experts to explain and I selected some of my favourite perfumes to transport you to a beach bar, sipping your favourite cocktail at sunset in just one spritz.
What Is a Solar Scent?
A solar scent is quite a loose term that refers to fragrance with a “sunshine” feel to it. Whilst solar perfumes aren’t a fragrance family – like woody, floral, amber, and fresh – and it could be argued that these scents could fit into one or two of the traditional groups, these particular scents have an undeniable quality to them that sets them apart. “This isn’t a traditional fragrance family so the definition and notes found within this category can range,” Michelle Feeney, founder of Floral Street tells PS UK. “It can be a fragrance with a bright, sparkling, or luminous character or something that invigorates the senses and brings a sense of joy.”
What Is a Solar Scent Perfume Note?
According to Feeney there are a few different ways to interpret that sunny, exotic “solar” feeling. “Some sure-fire ‘solar’ fragrances include the warmth of jasmine or amber, whereas some lead more with citrusy notes like bergamot, lemon and mandarin. Ingredients like salted musks give a second skin feeling as if you are drying in the sun and a natural coconut gives a rich creamy smell reminiscent of the beach.”
“The notes are often fresh and natural, which align with the broader trend towards a connection with nature and environmental consciousness,” says Oprey.”
As far as I am concerned although these scents contain similar notes, everyone’s memories of holidays will smell different and this is reflected in many solar scents. Some will remind you of your childhood, where as others smell like how you think you should smell on holiday – luxurious and the best version of you. But ultimately they are all joyful scents which smell like sunshine. Which is why it has quickly become one of my favourites scent sets and I can’t imagine wearing anything else throughout the summer months.
