    When Patrick Ta talks beauty, you listen. 

    The celebrity makeup artist and glam expert — who has worked with everyone from Gigi Hadid and Shay Mitchell to Camila Cabello and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and has his own cosmetics company — exclusively opened up to Us Weekly about his “unexpected” skincare secret: juicing.

    Ta discovered the beauty benefits of juicing through his recent partnership with Pressed Juicery, which helped get him through New York Fashion Week earlier this year. “My favorite Pressed Juice is the Pressed Juicery 7-Day Simple Cleanse,” he told Us. “I love this because when I have a long week of being on set or at the office, I am not able to eat as healthy as I would like to.     What is your favorite makeup trend this year?

    “My favorite makeup trend this year is the Strawberry Girl trend! I just launched a new Patrick Ta Beauty blush in the shade ‘She’s Wanted’ that gives you a beautiful berry effect. It looks like you’ve just come back from vacation with a natural all-over flush.”

    What makeup on a client has been your favorite this year and why?

    “My favorite makeup on a client this year was on Gigi Hadid for the NMACC Gala in Mumbai in April. I loved this look because I feel like it reflected the makeup that I love doing which is very bronzy. It also allowed me to travel and experience a new culture.”

    What is your favorite makeup look to do? 

    “Skin and overall complexion are my favorite things to focus on when doing makeup. My preference really is doing a look where I focus on the skin and then do either a bold lip or bold eye.”

    What would you say is the proper way to apply makeup? Foundation first?

    It really depends on the look. If I am doing a bold and smokey eye, I start with the eye and then do foundation. If I am doing more of a soft and natural eye, then I would start with the foundation.”

    How has your own makeup technique evolved through the years?

    “My makeup technique has evolved tremendously over the years. My career began at the MAC counter doing really heavy makeup and then I moved to Hollywood where I was working with models and actresses — then my technique became more natural. I then started working with more musicians/singers, which led back to bolder looks. Currently, I think my technique is now in the perfect in-between which is more everyday, red carpet makeup.”

    For people who aren’t very familiar with doing their own makeup, what is the best way to start?

    “The best way to start is to find earth tones colors that look best on you and accentuate your natural beauty. Just start from there.”

    How often should we switch out our foundation, eyeshadows, beauty brushes?

    “I think a Beauty Blender or beauty blender-like sponge is the most important makeup tool to swap out if you can’t clean it, or if it has rips or tears. I think that brushes can have a longer lifetime depending on how well you take care of them.”

    Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif gave Us Weekly the lowdown on TikTok beauty trends — sharing which ones are worth it and which to stay away from.

    First up, Dubrow, 65, praised skin slugging, which is a way to lock in moisture by applying Vaseline or a thick layer of lotion to the skin before going to bed. “Skin slugging is extraordinarily effective,” Dubrow, 65, exclusively told Us. “It keeps all the moisture in your skin … allowing that to soak in and not be leached out on your sheets and your pillowcases.”

    Although Dubrow recommended using a moisturizer instead of petroleum jelly, he asserted that the hack is “a good, good thing.” He continued, “You do it one time, you wake up in the morning, your skin’s gonna look better than it’s ever been.”

    Next, the experts addressed one of the latest fads in Hollywood: buccal fat removal — a procedure that hollows out the cheeks for a slimmer appearance. Although the surgery may create a snatched look, Dubrow and Nassif, 61, are “not a fan” of it.

    Nassif explained to Us, that buccal fat removal “makes you look old as you get older.” He warned, “It might be sculpted for the first few years, but especially as you get older, it’s gonna look horrible. So we want to tell everyone, don’t do that — unless you have a very [round] face shape.”

    Dubrow added, “Do not do buccal fat excision. You will pay for it later.”

    When asked if it’s safe to try the social media trend of slimming your nose by pinching it with clamps, Nassif disapproved. He noted, “From the functional standpoint and for the blood flow supply issues, I’m not a big fan of that.” However, manipulating the “thick skin” around the tip of the nose to make it look “smaller or for some photos” could be “cool to try.”

    Shaving peach fuzz and dead skin cells off your face, however, got the green light from Dubrow and Nassif. They noted it’s a “very effective” way to exfoliate the skin and it allows “your skincare to penetrate better.”

    When it comes to creating temporary dimples by placing bottle caps inside of your cheeks and sucking, the doctors think “it’s a little weird.” Dubrow told Us. “It’s no different than doing it with a filter. Just as long as it doesn’t cause any scarring or internal damage.”

    “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” he told Us, joking, “I think lube moisturizes down there, as well as it does up here.” He quipped, “Lube it up baby! While you’re there, you never know. It might motivate and stimulate other activities.”

    Retailers and content creators with over 1,000 followers can recommend products and brands on their short-form videos, allowing followers to click on the shopping basket icon while watching the video to purchase the products mentioned.

    There’s also the opportunity to shop curated products via the Showcase tab of a content creator or seller, which allows users to browse a list of products that can be purchased with a simple click. Plus, creators can go live, allowing followers to buy mentioned products in real time. Think of it as the social media version of a shopping TV channel.

    Why Should I Use TikTok Shop?

    First and foremost, it’s easy. Perhaps a little too easy. We’ve all been victims of a late-night TikTok scroll leading to a niche foundation arriving on your doorstep before you know it. But in our ever-busier lives, it’s a seamless, fuss-free shopping experience. It’s particularly handy if you’ve been frantically searching for the best holiday gifts, only to stumble across the Dyson Airwrap on your FYP.

    The Who What Wear 100: Submission Guidelines for Our First-Ever Beauty Awards

    TIMELINE

    December 15, 2023:  Last day for submissions

    January 2024: Short-listed product samples called in

    April 2024: Awards go live announcing winners

    The submission window for the 2024 Who What Wear 100 Beauty Awards begins on November 6, 2023, and the last day to submit is December 15, 2023. Our team will comb through entries to determine products for testing and notify brands that will move to the next round for testing by January 2024. From there, products will undergo rigorous assessment, and winners will be notified in advance of the awards going live in April 2024.

    SUBMISSION FEE

    The first submission for each brand is complimentary allowing every brand the opportunity to submit its hero product. From there, each additional submission costs $250. There’s no limit to the number of products a brand can submit.

    PRODUCT LAUNCH DATE

    As long as your product launches before April 2024, will not be limited edition, and has samples available for our testers, it’s eligible for the 2024 Who What Wear Beauty 100 Awards. If you know the product will launch prior to April but don’t have a hard launch date yet, please put “TBD” on the submission form. 

    TESTING SAMPLES

    If your product is selected for testing, the team will notify you in January 2024 to request samples. Please do not send unsolicited samples.

    Sometimes, I feel like no matter what, it’s really difficult for a fragrance to be truly unique. At the end of the day, a rose is a rose is a rose, after all. There’s only so much you can do to reinvent the wheel when it comes to fragrance—at a certain point, all of the raw ingredients available to you are the same.

    That’s why the new Future Society fragrances piqued my interest. In the world of fragrance, they’re truly unique scents, and that’s because the brand is reaching far outside a fragrance’s normal purview. Future Society scents are made using DNA sequences found from extinct flowers. 

    For founder Jasmina Aganovic, using these extinct DNA sequences is all about using fragrance and biology in tandem with one another to tell a story. “This idea of taking a DNA-sequencing Jurassic Park–type thing with flowers rather than dinosaurs is sort of the origin of this,” she says. “[We] work together with the Harvard Herbarium to gather specimens of flowers that have been preserved and are now known to be extinct.”

    These flowers aren’t being resurrected and reintroduced into the world. (Technology isn’t that advanced yet.) Instead, they’re given new life through fragrance. “The DNA is sort of like an instruction manual,” says Aganovic. “It’s sort of like 23andMe. If you’ve ever done 23andMe, you spit into a tube and it sends you all of this interesting information about yourself.”

    After gathering information about each flower, Aganovic honed in on anything that gave her clues to how it might have smelled. “That started to give us a direction of the olfactive profile and the scent molecules that were encoded into this flower,” she says. From there, they figured out which scents were likely actually expressed by the flower and wound up with six scents you won’t smell anywhere else—each is a unique reconstruction of an extinct flower.

    “In order to give an honest review of a celebrity-owned product, it is important to put aside your admiration for the celebrity and focus on the product’s performance itself,” Bravo continues. “This can be difficult for some people to do, which can make it hard to understand if someone loves the product because it is good, or if they love it simply because it is coming from their ride-or-die celebrity.” She also considers the difference in resources between celeb-owned brands and small, independent ones. This alone can help determine the quality of the product as well as a marketing approach.

    “You know a celebrity-owned brand is good when people are talking so much about how good a product is that folks who aren’t as familiar with the brand don’t even know it is celebrity-owned,” she explains. Taking that into consideration, it’s worth questioning the continued relevance of celeb brands in the beauty space. As consumer demands change to push for improved inclusivity and accessibility, ideally, a brand’s response should echo those efforts. If this is the case, then with increased reach comes heightened familiarity (even more so for celebrity beauty brands).

    I took a look at some of the jaw-dropping numbers some of our favorite celeb-owned beauty brands have hit over the past year thanks to their massive TikTok presence. Cosmetify’s TikTok Beauty Index, by October 2023, revealed that Rare Beauty hit 3.5 million followers (with 50.3 million video likes and with 7.7 billion hashtag views), making it the second most popular TikTok beauty brand behind Huda Beauty. That being said, it holds the highest following and likes of any celeb-owned beauty brand on the platform. But as we head into 2024, I’m wondering if this generation’s most beloved beauty brands will continue to keep up with the fast-paced trend cycle of the industry.

    “One of my mutuals Heather Hurst shared a great analogy about fashion trends that I believe applies to beauty as well. Basically, imagine every beauty trend is on a conveyor belt that circles round and round,” Bravo continues. “You do not have to grab everything off of the conveyor belt all at once.” In other words, if you’re not drawn to a product, its popularity alone shouldn’t be enough to inspire a purchase. In its simplest form, her biggest beauty advice when it comes to the industry’s trend cycle is as follows: enjoy what interests you and don’t feel pressure to invest in the rest because when it comes to trend cycles, everything comes back around… eventually.

    While Prada Beauty formally launches in the United States in January 2024, it looks like we’ve lucked out—some of the products are already available on the site. The eyeshadow palettes draw from Prada’s archival prints, while the lipsticks are inspired by the iconic Saffiano leather, which reinvents the idea of what matte lipstick looks like as we know it.

    The Airstrait works differently than any other straightener you’ve come across, as it doesn’t rely on hot plates to smooth hair. Instead, the tool relies on the powerful airflow that Dyson is known for to dry and straighten hair without any heat damage. In fact, the highest temperature you can set the Airstrait to is 285 degrees Fahrenheit, which is much lower than most hot tools. 

    “Having a strong understanding of how to manipulate and realize the potential of powerful airflow is fundamental to the performance of the Dyson Airstrait straightener,” James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer, shared in a press release. “This expertise, which we’ve gained over the last 25 years, is what has enabled us to deliver our first wet to dry straightener, with no hot plates, and no extreme heat damage. Delivering the ease-of-use that people love about straighteners but with high-velocity air blades, saves time, maintains hair strength and achieves an everyday natural straight style.” 

    The tool looks like your average straightener, but it has a few pretty cool functions. You can clamp it dry and use it as a hair dryer to rough-dry hair and dry the scalp area. From there, you can choose the “Wet,” “Dry,” or “Cool” settings to style your hair. On “Wet” mode, you can choose between 175°F, 230°F, and 285°F (the thicker and curlier the hair, the higher you’d likely want to go). On “Dry,” you can choose 250°F or 285°F or a “boost”. You can also control airflow, and the machine also automatically turns off once you’ve set it down. 

    I decided to test the Airstrait on myself to see just how easy it is to use. I have extremely thick, wavy hair that typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to dry—and if I add straightening into the mix, I’m looking at at least an hour in front of the mirror.
