The player backlash against generative AI in gaming has hit a fever pitch as we close out the year, and Battlefield 6 is the latest target of fans’ ire. Kotaku understands that EA is currently investigating accusations of AI slop in season 1’s recent winter cosmetics and trying to determine just exactly how the controversial technology may or may not have been used in their production.
The accusations started over the weekend when fans circulated one of Battlefield 6‘s new stickers from the Windchill bundle, which is currently being sold for just under $10. The cosmetic shows a character aiming down the scope of a double-barreled rifle. “Two barrels on the M4A1, sure,” read one angry viral post on the game’s subreddit. “I would literally prefer to have no sticker than some low quality AI generated garbage. You can look at BO7 and see how many favors AI generated rewards won with them.”
This led some fans to start doing an AI “vibe check” on other cosmetics in the game. While nothing as glaring as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s six-fingered Santa Zombie loading screen has been found, it’s raised questions about how widespread the issue might be. For example, there’s an in-game sticker of a bear who appears to have more than 10 claws on its paws. Is this just sloppy quality control or evidence that Battlefield 6‘s post-launch development has been outsourcing designs to generative AI tools?
An AI-generated double-barreled rifle would fun afoul of a promise made earlier this year by EA VP Rebecka Coutaz, who oversees DICE and the other teams making Battlefield. In an interview with the BBC, she promised fans they wouldn’t see any AI-generated imagery in the final game, but admitted that the technology is used in the earlier phases of production “to allow more time and more space to be creative.”
There are a couple of increasingly common ways AI slop like this might make it into a big-budget blockbuster that’s on its way to being the best-selling game of 2025. The first is that concept artists might use generative AI to create references for a design before digitally painting over those by hand. The second is that an outsourcing team EA subcontracts with ends up submitting designs for cosmetics that then slip through a rushed review process.
EA has been uniquely bullish on the potential for AI to transform game development. “We view AI as a powerful accelerator of creativity, innovation, and player connection,” CEO Andrew Wilson told investors during the company’s earnings report last May. Staff across various departments, from art and QA to marketing and customer service, have been strongly encouraged to find ways to experiment with AI tools in their daily workflows. Kotaku reported just last month that the tools were used to create an entire cover for the Deluxe Edition of NHL 26.
But while a double-barreled rifle might be a dead giveaway that AI was involved, other errors might simply be a result of quality control going down as teams rush to flood Battlefield 6‘s post-launch window with new content and microtransactions. According to a source familiar with the game’s production, the scope of its current roadmap has stretched resources thin when it comes to reviewing it all for any potentially embarrassing mistakes.

Battlefield 6 is getting a . This follows that have been popping up ever since the on October 10.
It’s called Battlefield: RedSec, though we don’t have too many gameplay details. It’s free for everyone and you don’t need the full-priced game to play. That much we do know. This puts it in direct competition with Call of Duty’s own free-to-play battle royale, Warzone.
We can assume some gameplay elements, as it’s a battle royale. It’ll likely feature players heading to a large map and battling one another until the last person is left standing. You know the drill. EA dropped a short teaser that seems to show four different classes of soldier to choose from.
We don’t know how or if this battle royale will interact with the main game. Warzone typically includes a story that ties into whatever’s going on with Call of Duty’s seasonal content drops. To that end, Season 1 of Battlefield 6 also releases on October 28. This update includes new maps, modes, vehicles, guns, attachments and cosmetic items.
Battlefield: RedSec will be available for download on various gaming platforms at 11AM ET. This could end up being a pretty big hit for EA, as the main game managed to sell .
EA and Battlefield Studios have some good news. Soon, you won’t have to inject yourself over and over with magic soldier juice and kill over two dozen people to unlock a spawn beacon in the recently released online FPS Battlefield 6.
In Battlefield 6, there are numerous in-game challenges to complete that provide various rewards. Some of these aren’t much to write home about, like a camo skin or some extra XP. However, other rewards are extremely useful and offer powerful gadgets or gear. For example, to unlock the Assault’s spawn beacon, a device that lets others spawn in at that spot, you have to complete one of these in-game challenges. And some of these, like the aforementioned spawn beacon challenge, are a real pain in the ass. Thankfully, EA has confirmed that big changes are coming soon to alleviate some of these annoying grinds.
On October 24, the Battlefield devs published a blog post announcing some minor changes that have been recently made to the game and teased some bigger tweaks coming over the course of the online shooter’s first season. Among the updates is the news that many challenges will be made easier to complete starting in season one. Here are the challenges EA specifically revealed will be tweaked in the post:
Class Assignment – Assault 1 – Get 30 kills while using the Adrenaline Injector – Changing to 3 kills
Class Assignment – Engineer Expert 3 – Repair Vehicles for 6,000 health in a match – Changing to 1,000 health
Weapon Assignment – Deadeye 2 – Get 150 headshot kills over 200m with Sniper Rifles – Changing to 5 kills and distance requirement will be reduced, too
These are just the ones EA revealed. Others are being tweaked, too. And that’s great, as some of these challenges were incredibly annoying. I recently completed the Assault challenge involving the injector, and it was like pulling teeth. The injector currently sucks in Battlefield 6, as it doesn’t last long and takes forever to use. But the spawn beacon is a very valuable tool, so I spent time grinding for it and hated the experience. Talking to friends who play BF6, they have had similar issues with the challenges sucking the fun out of the game, so I think these tweaks are smart. Also, maybe EA could make the injector actually good one day in a future update? Just a thought.
Beyond the challenge tweaks, the devs are also planning some changes for player movement in an effort to make the game feel more consistent, but without changing the “pace” and “core feel” of how BF6 plays now. “These adjustments aim to deliver a smoother and more precise aiming experience, all while preserving an immersive first-person feel,” explained the devs in the update post.
You can also expect some more fixes for weapon bloom issues, an ongoing problem in the game, and changes to lighting and brightness, which will hopefully help players who keep being blinded by the sun when stepping outside. There are also some notes in here about BF6‘s battle royale mode, which doesn’t officially have a release date, but rumors are swirling that it will drop on October 28, alongside season one. We’ll see if that happens. For now, I’m just happy people won’t have to grind for that damn spawn beacon when these BF6 season one changes start rolling out across consoles and PC later this month.
Every modern military shooter doubles as a reward treadmill. Calibrate it too generously and everyone gets bored. Make the grind too steep and stingy, and players bounce off or find ways to cheat the system. A week into Battlefield 6‘s launch, the development team is tackling that problem by making the XP grind suck less but also nuking the XP farming servers currently flooding the game’s community matchmaking section.
“We’ve heard your feedback around the pace of progression, especially how long it can take to unlock hardware such as gadgets, and weapon attachments,” EA announced in a new blog post. We know progression is an important part of feeling rewarded for your time on the battlefield.”
The following changes are expected to arrive sometime in the next week:
The XP gained from match completion and the daily bonus are being increased by 10% and 40% respectively.
The XP needed to unlock the first 20 attachment ranks is being reduced, so you’ll start earning useful attachments almost twice as fast.
Please Note: For weapons that are already being progressed, the UI might display something abnormal at first, but this should resolve itself once a match is played while using that weapon.
The assignments that required career ranks 20, 23, and 26 to begin will now require career ranks 10, 15, and 20, respectively.
While this allows these assignments to be started sooner, we are aware of the frustrations regarding the challenges themselves and are actively working on reviewing them, but it will take more time to develop, test, and implement these changes.
Do they go far enough? My gut says it’s a step in the right direction but still not far enough. They’ll also come coupled with EA putting the kibosh on the community XP farm servers fans have been using to quickly rank up and unlock everything.
Nuking Battlefield 6‘s best XP farm
In Battlefield 6, as it is in just about every game that’s ever existed, the “right” or “fun” way to play is not the most optimized for progressing through the meta game. In order to quickly unlock some of the best weapons in the game like the PW7A2 SMG and DRS-IAR LMG, Battlefield 6 players have been flooding the community server list with private matches against bots where they mow enemies down to grind for new rewards and levels as quickly as possible. If you’ve ever jumped into the community section of matchmaking and been met with a sea of boring bot XP farm servers or the error message “global game quota is exceeded” when you try to create your own, this is why.
“After reviewing the data, we found that a large number of these servers were created primarily to earn XP, inflate player stats, and earn special accolades through defeating bots,” the development team writes. “We completely understand the motivation behind this, like faster progression and a way to test setups without pressure, but it’s led to some unintended side effects.”
To combat this issue, EA has teased mysterious “adjustments” that are supposed to get rid of all the XP farms taking up server space while “further emphasizing playing with friends on both custom and verified experiences.” How will that work exactly? The developers aren’t saying yet. This change will require maintenance on the game’s backend, however, and players will need to republish all custom map experiences after it’s live.
And don’t worry, EA knows fans are pissed about weapon bloom (bullets randomly missing if you’re too far away, even when you’ve accurately fired at the target) and other community complaints. “We have also seen your concerns on other areas of the game, including visibility, weapon bloom, vehicles not spawning, and more,” the blog post reads. “We’ll share more details on these as updates are determined.”
EA has had quite the month, and the numbers tell its story. A few weeks ago, the company confirmed an agreement to go private in a $55 billion sale. And now we know that Battlefield 6 sold over 7 million copies in its first three days. The game also had over 172 million online matches played during the holiday weekend. On top of that, it logged 15 million hours watched on streaming services.
Battlefield 6‘s sales numbers make it the biggest opening yet for the franchise. By comparison, 2021’s Battlefield 2042 reportedly sold a relatively paltry 4.2 million copies in its first week.
The quotes in EA’s blog post read like awards ceremony acceptance speeches. “First and foremost, we want to thank our players,” franchise General Manager Byron Beede said. “We never take moments like this for granted, so I want to express our sincere gratitude to our global Battlefield Studios and passionate community that has helped get us to this point,” Executive VP Vince Zampella added.
The game’s launch came weeks after the company’s announcement that it will go private. The gaming giant will be owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. On Wednesday, unionized EA staffers spoke out against the acquisition, warning that “every time private equity or billionaire investors take a studio private, workers lose visibility, transparency and power.”
Battlefield 6 launched on October 10. It’s available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Its Season 1 content is just around the corner, arriving on October 28.

Last month, Battlefield 6’s open beta on PC and consoles quickly became one of the most-played games of 2025. But like any modern game hitting Xbox in 2025, BF6 is launching on both the Series X and the weaker Series S. And according to the devs behind the game, getting BF6 to run on the less powerful console was a “challenge.”
Earlier this week, Kotaku sat down with two Battlefield 6 devs to discuss the game’s console ports, and I asked if the team struggled while trying to get such a big and complicated game to run well on Xbox Series S. We’ve heard storiesthat the Series Scan cause devs headaches. And despite Frostbite, BF6‘s engine, being very “scalable,” the Series S was still proven a tricky beast to conquer.
“I will say that the biggest thing we did that was a challenge for us was [dealing with the console’s limited] memory,” explained Christian Buhl, technical director on Battlefield 6. “Xbox Series S does have less memory than even our mid-spec PC. And so there was a point…Oh, I want to say, like, 6 to 12 months ago where we kind of realized that a lot of our levels were crashing on Xbox Series S.”
As a result, the team focused on “optimizing” memory usage in Battlefield 6. And these improvements weren’t just felt on Series S. According to Buhl, this process made the “whole game better and more stable.” However, the devs also worked on “specific optimizations” for Xbox Series S, too.
“We were doing so much testing…we were collecting all this data,” explained Buhl. “Once we kind of started running all our levels through it, and were able to see where the problems were, after a month or two, we had kind of resolved all of our memory issues on Series S.”
Buhl says Battlefield 6 is now “super solid” and “performant” on Xbox Series S and will run at a “smooth 60 frames per second.” And footage of the game’s open beta running on Series S seems to back that up.
EA Won’t Talk About Battlefield 6 On Switch 2
Of course, with Frostbite being so scalable and the studio working hard to make BF6 super optimized, I wanted to ask if, theoretically, the game could run on a Switch 2. The studio is even implementing gyro controls on PS5 and PS5 Pro to let players flick around quickly or reload with the simple waggle of the gamepad.
However, when I asked if it would be possible for Battlefield 6 and Frostbite to run on a Switch 2 based on the specs, an EA rep stepped in and cut off Buhl right as he began to say something.
“Sorry, I have to step in here,” said the EA rep. “We can’t talk anything beyond, sort of, like, the consoles that Battlefield’s coming to, which is Xbox Series X/S and PS5, and PS5 Pro.”
Later on, when the team was talking about gyro controls, I brought up how the Switch 2 has excellent gyro sensors in its Joy-Con.
“Exactly, yeah,” was the response. So, at least I can confirm the devs working on Battlefield 6 think the Switch 2 has great gyro controls. Beyond that, nothing.
I’m very excited to play Battlefield 6 once it launches on October 10 on my PS5 Pro and high-end gaming PC. But not everyone has access to those devices, and some players are gaming on the aging and weaker Xbox Series S. So I’m happy to hear that the devs behind the game worked so hard on optimizing it and making sure all platforms get a great version of Battlefield 6. And hey, maybe Switch 2 owners will get their own solid version of BF6 in the future?
In August, the Battlefield 6 open beta was a massive success and one of the most played games of the year. But there was a controversial “quick turn” setting included in the beta that caused some debate online. And when I asked the devs why it was added, they said: Balance and customization.
Earlier this week, Kotaku sat down with two Battlefield 6 devs to discuss the game’s console ports, and I had to ask about the quick turn feature. People online suggested it looked like cheating and was too OP. Others claimed it helped balance BF6 by giving controller players a chance to turn around quickly. According to Matthew Nickerson, senior console combat designer on Battlefield 6, balancing the game was indeed one reason it was added.
“The inherent issue of including aim assist on controller,” Nickerson told Kotaku, “[is that] you constantly are doing a big sweeping motion [while looking around], you’re constantly going full speed, and then you hit the bubbles of aim assist, and it automatically slows down. So you’re kind of constantly fighting these systems that are preventing you from quickly 180 turning.”
Adding a quick flip option was a “huge win” that solved a “lot of issues” that exist when playing on a controller against mouse and keyboard players.
“You know, you get shot in the back [and] it’s frustrating to be a controller player those days,” added Nickerson.
According to him, making sure crossplay was balanced, fair, and fun was a huge goal for the entire team working on Battlefield 6. So the quick turn option, officially known as “Flick Stick,” was one more way to keep crossplay competitive for all.
The other reason for adding it? Well, because it’s cool and gives players one more way to customize their controls and gameplay. And combined with the PS5’s gyro controls, Flick Stick can do some “really cool stuff.” Plus, Nickerson told Kotaku it helps give console players more ways to interact with the game despite gamepads having far fewer buttons than a keyboard.
“If you want to reload [or turn around], maybe you just flick on your controller upright, and it activates the gyro, so it’s like another new layer of customizability,” said Nickerson.
I’m not sure I’ll be using gyro controls in Battlefield 6 when it launches on October 10 on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. But you’d better believe I’ll have a button set for turning around instantly so I can at least I can see the person killing me from behind.
When I first heard about EA and Battlefield Studios’ plan to implement an open weapon system in the upcoming Battlefield 6, I scoffed! And playing the game in Los Angeles for an event last month didn’t sell me on it, either; I still worried it would make classes feel less unique. Now, after playing the open beta for nearly 20 hours, I’m here to say: I was wrong.
Let’s back up for a moment and explain, briefly, open and closed weapon class systems inBattlefield. (I promise this won’t be too boring.) Basically, for nearly as long as the franchise has been around, classes were locked to certain weapons. Recon, for example, had to use a sniper rifle. Over time, developers at Dice tweaked this and added “neutral” weapons that could be picked by multiple classes, or they spread specific types of weapons across a few classes. Battlefield 2042 threw a lot of this out the window when it launched without classes and let players essentially build custom heroes who could use any gadget or gun. It then added classes back in when people got angry. Anyway, Battlefield 6 is trying to find a happy balance between 2042‘s total, unbalanced openness and the classic closed weapon system of the past games. And I think, despite being nervous about the change and all the debate raging online among players on both sides, Battlefield Studios has mostly nailed it.
In Battlefield 6, any class can use any weapon. So you can spawn in as a recon soldier, but instead of a sniper rifle, you could bring an SMG. Engineers, traditionally a class that uses SMGs, can rock snipers and LMGs. At first, this seemed like a bad idea to me. I worried that players would just pick the class with the best abilities and pick the best assault rifle, and you’d lose all the uniqueness that comes from BF’s old-school class system. And in some smaller, more combat-focused modes, this is indeed the case. But in bigger, more Battlefield-y modes, like Conquest and Rush, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how things have worked out.
In my hours with the beta, I found that in many matches players were spread all around the four classes. In some past games (looking at you, Battlefield 3), people would pick whatever class had the best assault rifle, and that was that. During a Q&A with the devs last month in LA, they talked about this and said that the open weapon system was partly designed to combat this. The idea is that now people will pick classes based on what the team needs and their unique abilities and tools, rather than the weapons they can and can’t use.
And yeah, that’s exactly what I saw happening in many BF6 open beta matches. If the enemy team, for example, brought in a bunch of vehicles or tanks, I’d see players swap to engineers to use that class’s RPG to take all those machines out. Likewise, I saw players and friends swap to the support class to help hold a point and revive people, or swap to recon to help pin down a target. It seems now that weapons can be freely equipped on any class, people are far more open to playing different classes and helping out the team. Sure, maybe some of these players have just equipped the same assault rifle on all of the classes, but if it helps my team stop a tank from destroying us, I’m fine with it. That’s a much better scenario than in past BF games, where a whole team might be assault soldiers and you’d be unable to get ammo resupplies or fight back against helis.
Battlefield 6 also rewards players for choosing a weapon that is more aligned with their class. Recon soldiers get a ton of exclusive sniper perks that make it almost silly to use a sniper rifle on any other class. But you can do it, if that makes you happy. And this is where I’d suggest some tweaks.
I think rewarding players who pick class-specific weapons is a smart idea, but I almost feel like the devs could do more to make sure picking an assault rifle on every class isn’t an easy option. Perhaps class-specific weapon punishments could work? An assault class soldier picking a sniper rifle might mean they don’t get the recon benefits, and perhaps they also reload the big rifles more slowly. Or an engineer picking an assault rifle has more kick and can’t carry as much ammo for it. These tweaks would reward people playing classes more traditionally, could be overcome with skill or teamwork, and would still allow for the weapon freedom the devs want in BF6.
But even if Battlefield 6 devs don’t steal my totally-awesome-and-perfect idea, I think the open weapon system is a good change. It lets players enjoy all the classes without forcing them to play with specific guns. This leads to matches in which all the classes are used, and that leads to more enjoyable Battlefield action. And that’s what I’m looking for. Sure, maybe it means that I’ll be killed a lot by a few popular assault rifles, but it might also mean that there will be more medics running around who can heal me. That would be nice. And don’t worry; if you hate the open weapon system, EA is going to offer playlists and modes that feature locked weapons, too. Everyone wins.
