Wake Forest’s Cameron Stanley grabs a rebound over N.C. State’s Andrew Brackman at the 2006 ACC tournament. Stanley is transferring to Winthrop and will be able to play immediately because Wake Forest does not offer the master’s degree program he wants to take.

Andrew Brackman was at N.C. State’s Doak Field on Friday night, watching Wolfpack right-hander Jacob Dudan pop the fastball.

Dudan, a freshman reliever from Huntersville, was consistently above 90 miles per hour with his pitches and later said he has hit 99. He was the closer as the No. 17 Wolfpack earned a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Wake Forest that sealed another ACC series win over a ranked team.

It was a victory that left Wolfpack coach Elliott Avent sighing in relief after the game, after dealing with one of the nation’s best — if not the best — pitchers in Chase Burns. He, too, throws in the 90s and had 13 strikeouts in seven innings Friday as the Pack picked up the winning run against Wake relievers in the ninth with four straight walks.

Brackman was once that guy on the mound for the Pack, and at 6 feet 10 inches, the right-hander was an imposing presence. A two-sport athlete for the Pack and a forward on the basketball team, the Cincinnati native also helped N.C. State reach the Sweet 16 in the 2005 NCAA tournament.

    ‘Baseball player at heart’

Brackman loved basketball and was good at it, quick and agile and highly competitive. But baseball was his ticket to the big leagues and a nice contract and signing bonus, with Scott Boras as his agent.

After his sophomore year, after Wolfpack basketball coach Herb Sendek left, Brackman concentrated on only baseball..

“It would have been fun to play basketball, but I think I made the right decision,” Brackman said. “I’m a baseball player at heart.”

He threatened 100 mph with his fastball and showed enough promise to be a first-round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2007.

“But all these kids can throw it in the 90s these days,” Brackman said Friday.

    A familiar injury

Such is the rub. A lot of young pitchers also need “Tommy John” surgery after injuring the ulnar collateral ligaments in their pitching arms. That’s another product of the times and an obsession with velocity, the speed gun and gunning for triple digits.

Wolfpack senior Matt Willadsen, again slated to be a starter this season. was injured on the first day of practice this year and needed the surgery. More recently, freshman Shane Van Dam hurt his UCL, taking away a valuable reliever on a team that could contend for an ACC championship and has hopes of hosting an NCAA Tournament baseball regional.

Brackman had Tommy John surgery. His was performed by Dr. James Andrews, the Alabama physician who has gained a measure of baseball fame by specializing in the procedure and saving a lot of baseball careers.

Brackman’s career was curtailed by injuries. He pitched three games in the big leagues with the Yankees, spent time in the minors and later attempted comebacks with the Cincinnati Reds — his hometown team — and the Chicago White Sox before leaving the pro game in 2013.

“It was tough, leaving State and then the mental grind of being injured and having to recreate kind of how to throw and everything,” Brackman said.

    Life after pro baseball

At 38, Brackman now lives in Hatteras and jokingly said he is “semi-retired,” He’s an assistant baseball coach at Cape Hatteras High and stays on the move — he recently returned from a safari in South Africa.

“I like being outside, just like baseball, getting your hands dirty and putting in the work and the effort,” he said.

Brackman is like so many pro athletes who have to make the not-so-easy transition after the games end and the cheering stops. They lean on their daily athletic routines for so long, then have to make an adjustment in their every-day lives.

“It was an experience I’ll never forget, but I miss the camaraderie of riding on the bus and being around my friends,” he said of pro baseball. “That’s what I miss the most.”

Brackman was able to renew some of his old college basketball camaraderie at the NCAA Final Four after the Wolfpack’s ACC championship and then NCAA tournament runs.

“Seeing some old friends and rooting on the Pack was fun,” he said, smiling.

And being back at Doak Field and seeing pitchers pop the fastball. That was fun, too.

It was always going to be an uphill battle. After a Game 6 in which the Knicks lost 116-103 to the Pacers and the pesky heartbeat of the team, Josh Hart, suffered an abdominal injury, the Knicks had their work cut out for them. Before tipoff, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski dropped a bomb that gave fans more reason to hope: Hart and OG Anunoby, who’d been out since Game 2, were both going to play. It seemed like it could really happen this time.

Robert Quinn, a newish fan, says he had been a little nervous, but says, “knowing my Knicks? We got this.” But it’s looking grim: Pacers 70, Knicks 55 at the half. Victor Ng, an on-and-off follower of the team since the Patrick Ewing glory days of 1994, had bet on a very specific outcome: Knicks by four points. Now he’s saying, “I think FanDuel took my money.” But he turns philosophical all the same: “Being a fan is being on a rollercoaster. This season, they’re up and down but at least it’s ending up on a high note. So I can’t complain.” Then he adds, “if they can tie, they can win. If they’re not pulling within 8, they’re not coming back.”

Bella, age 10, usually leans toward hockey, but she’d been pulled toward basketball by the playoff run. “They’re New York, I root for New York, I’m with New York.” She has a message: “to the Knicks, no matter what happens today, you’re an amazing team and we’re supporting you all the way.”

At Mustang Harry’s, a block south of the Garden, fans are straining to see the TVs through the windows. Rich Templeton, a lifelong fan, has already been to two more bars nearby, Stout and The Triple Crown, and he says this patch of sidewalk was the best vantage point he’s found. “They’re coming back,” he says. “Donte [DiVincenzo] is gonna lead them back. Donte and [Jalen] Brunson. Donte’s got a little spunk to him and he can shoot the 3 ball.” How does he see the night going if the Knicks pull out a comeback victory? “It’s not Philadelphia, so I don’t expect things to be burned or anything, but I think it’ll be a nice lively atmosphere.”

Tom, an 18-year-old who flew in from Naples, Florida, disagrees: “If they win I think the city’s gonna burn the fuck down. Empire State Building’s going down, and Penn Station is burning to the ground. Simple as that.” He and his two friends have courtside seats, he says, arriving at halftime. They’re optimistic for a comeback but also realists. “It’s always a letdown, as Knicks fans. That’s what makes us loyal fans.”

Back by the entrance to the Garden, a pair of vendors are hawking NEW YORK VS. EVERYBODY and JALEN MVP BRUNSON shirts. Another seller says of his prices, “If we win, this goes up.”

Halfway through the fourth quarter, hope is fading. Fans start trickling out of the Garden onto the steps where Michael and his friend Kevin are standing. Michael says he’s walked past the arena on his commute every day for the past ten years. When we ask him whether he and Kevin are Knicks fans, Michael says, “We wish we weren’t after this game.” Kevin adds, “we overcame so much this season … just for it to end it like this.”

Draco, a content creator and 76ers fan who watched as the Knicks eliminated his team two weeks ago, came up from Philly this morning “just to watch them lose.” He walks over to us, livestreaming from his phone, and also starts interviewing Michael and Kevin. “Y’all have so little faith in your team right now. There’s still six minutes left in the game. And y’all really leaving right now, what’s going on?” But they’re still proud. Michael says, “We grind, we grit, we work hard and I feel like at the end of the day like that’s what matters. We support them. We love them as players and as people you know, we protect them, we take care of our own.”

Jeff Knight, a 38-year-old who’s been a fan since he was 6, tells me he’d headed for the exit after news spread inside the arena that Brunson had fractured his hand. Another fan, Adam Silvers, had been sitting in section 201, where the injury news spread as people got updates on their phones. When he got word, Silvers thought, “well, that’s the end of that.” He’d spent more than $800 on his tickets.

Rami Evgi, a season-ticket holder for 30 years, says he knew the Knicks were going to lose from the beginning of the game. He left early because he couldn’t bear to see the ugly end. He’d flipped every other playoff ticket he had for the money, but he’d saved game 7 for himself. Even with the loss, he says, it was still the best Knicks season since 1999, when the Knicks lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the finals. This season, he says, was sweet because it was a surprise, “I didn’t even know if they would make the playoffs. If everybody was healthy, nobody could have stopped us.”

Amber, a brand-new fan at 26, had seen them win in Philadelphia. She too is down, but she’s already relishing the memory: “They’ve done so well, honestly. A lot of the players got injured, but with the few players they have left, they did amazing. We’re sad, but honestly they did a good job.”

Pat, 35, and Tracy, 36, are New Yorkers who paid $12,000 each for their center-court season tickets. But Tracy is, like her dad, a Celtics fan. “She is happily married to me, I believe,” Pat reassures us, and possibly himself. “She roots for the Knicks unless it’s against the Celtics.” Ever since Julius Randle got hurt in January, “it was always like, agh, the season’s probably not going to be great. But then everyone kept trying their guts out. And unfortunately, they made us fall in love. And then you know, just sucks to see someone try so fucking hard…”

One of the first Pacers fans to leave the arena, when his team was up 17 with three minutes to go, is a lone guy in a golden-yellow team hoodie. A bunch of random Knicks fans immediately circle him, yelling “get the fuck out of here you bitch-ass” and “fuck the Pacers.” (It was more aggro posturing than actual threat.) The Pacers fan doesn’t seem to mind the taunting — his team was through, after all. A family of six dressed in Pacers jerseys, with three young children plus an infant in Mom’s arms, says they feel “amazing,” barely aware that Knicks fans are screaming at them to go home. Joe and Jack Judson, also Pacers fans, aren’t fazed by being outnumbered. Joe says, “that’s the thing about New York fans, they’re passionate.” The two spent $10,000 per ticket and Joe estimates that the trip cost about $27,000 altogether. Jack, his son, says it’s the best game he’s ever been to. He’s a rising senior at Purdue University in Indiana, and says his buddies back home are “electric.” His phone has been blowing up.

After the final buzzer — Pacers 130, Knicks 109 — a swarm of mostly young men gather at the top of the escalators to Penn Station at 33rd street. United in their loss, they start chanting “Fuck Trae Young,” a player who is not on the Indiana Pacers nor is even in the playoffs. The animosity is still fresh from when Young’s Atlanta Hawks beat the Knicks in the first round in 2021.

Silvers is optimistic: “This is probably year one for this core. They probably got three or four years in them. They got a lot of draft picks and a lot of capital. So they can go out and get a pretty big name. And Randle will be healthy and he gives the Knicks 25 and 10 easily every night.” Knight thinks the Knicks should part ways with Randle in the offseason, “based on how the Knicks played without him. Brunson took his game to a different level once Randle was out.” Silvers thinks “maybe they get someone like a Kevin Durant if he thinks MSG is cool enough now.”  Evgi thinks they need “another good guy, not Kevin Durant or Devin Booker, but a surprise, like Hartenstein. Just a good player.”

Cops are patrolling the area, dispersing the crowds and drawing them down from lampposts. A fan jokes to his friend, “Knicks in 8,” suggesting that this was still their year. The crowd shifts to “fuck Tyrese,” the Pacers star, then “fuck Embiid,” the 76ers star. Anything is worthy of comment — including the entire sport of hockey, as they shift over to yelling “let’s go Rangers.” An altercation with a Knicks fan prompts an officer to shove him back, and several other cops step in to push the crowd away and firmly suggest that they all go home. The last chant before the police disperse them is “fuck the Celtics.” The city does not burn. The price of the T-shirts drops from $20 to $10.

The two greatest words in sports will ring throughout the Mile High on Sunday: Game Seven.

The defending champions Denver Nuggets will host the Minnesota Timberwolves for a Game 7 dance to decide who gets to play in this year’s Western Conference Finals.

Denver has historically reached the conference finals five times in its history, most recently in 2020 and 2023. If Minnesota pulls off the upset, this will be their first conference finals appearance in 20 years.

Games 1 to 6 have featured pesty defensive efforts, mind-boggling offensive outings by 3-time MVP center Nikola Jokic and breakout performances for rising star Anthony Edwards.

Despite the road team winning each of the first four games, both Denver and Minnesota managed to defend their home courts in Games 5 and 6.

Here’s the thing: we don’t know the time quite yet

Tip-off at Ball Arena depends on the outcome of Friday night’s Indiana Paces and New York Knicks game.

If the Pacers force a Game 7 in their series, the Timberwolves and Nuggets game will tip off at 6 p.m. and TNT would broadcast.

If the Knicks win Game 6 to clinch their series, Denver’s Game 7 will tip off at 1:30 p.m. and ABC would broadcast.

Regardless of the time, here are 10 places to catch Game 7 in Denver this Sunday:

NY Knicks and Nuggets on the verge of finals with 3-2 lead

    [ad_1]

Brunson’s 44 points gave the Knicks a 121-91 win over Pacers, while MVP Jokic led the Nuggets to victory over the Timberwolves in Game 5.

The New York Knicks and the Denver Nuggets took a 3-2 lead each by winning their home games in the Eastern and Western Conference semifinal series.

Jalen Brunson scored 44 points for hosts Knicks, who routed the Indiana Pacers 121-91 in Game 5 at a star-studded Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

The Knicks, who lost Games 3 and 4 in Indianapolis, now hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. New York will attempt to clinch a berth in the Eastern Conference finals with a road win in Game 6 on Friday.

Brunson, who scored at least 40 points for the fifth time in 11 playoff games this spring, added seven assists and four rebounds in 43 minutes.

Josh Hart logged 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, and Isaiah Hartenstein pulled down 17 rebounds. Hartenstein’s 12 offensive boards tied a franchise playoff record set by Charles Oakley against the Chicago Bulls on May 15, 1994.

Alec Burks had 18 points off the bench while Miles McBride scored 17 points for the Knicks.

“To me, that’s been a trademark of the team,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said of New York’s high level of energy.

“We’ve been short-handed all year and this is our way. We have to play hard as heck on every possession and we’ve got to keep doing it. So, we have to do that for 48 minutes.

“And we know if we defend and we rebound, take care of the ball, we’re going to have a good chance to win.”

    MVP ‘Joker’ shines for Nuggets

Meanwhile, Nikola Jokic celebrated his third MVP trophy by scoring 40 points and handing out 13 assists as the Denver Nuggets beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-97 in the Western Conference semifinals.

Aaron Gordon logged 18 points and 10 rebounds while Jamal Murray and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 16 points apiece for Denver, which leads the best-of-seven series 3-2 after dropping the first two at home.

Game 6 is on Thursday night in Minneapolis.

Jokic received his MVP trophy from NBA commissioner Adam Silver before tip-off, then scored 12 points in the first quarter and seven in the second to stake Denver to a 50-44 half-time lead.

Edwards attempted just eight shots in the first half, hitting only one, and he did not take a shot in the first seven-plus minutes of the third quarter. After the Nuggets grabbed a 76-63 lead, he got aggressive, hitting a layup and converting a three-point play to quickly cut the deficit to eight points.

Jokic took over the rest for the remainder of the quarter, banking in a hook shot, converting a pair of three-point plays and making two more free throws to put Denver ahead 88-74 heading into the fourth.

Jokic finished the third with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting.

Minnesota made a last push to get within 101-90, but Murray hit three shots in the final minutes to seal the win.

Christian Braun scored 10 points off the bench for Denver.

  • The WNBA season is getting underway featuring Caitlin Clark’s debut and more. Here’s what you need to know.

The WNBA season is getting underway featuring Caitlin Clark’s debut and more. Here’s what you need to know.

    [ad_1]

The WNBA is poised to blow the whistle on its 28th season Tuesday night. From the juggernaut Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty to new marquee talent like Caitlin Clark taking the floor, the league is growing faster than ever. Here’s what you need to know.

    What to watch opening night:

There will be four games played Tuesday night:

The New York Liberty vs. the Washington Mystics

The Indiana Fever vs. the Connecticut Sun

The Phoenix Mercury vs. the Las Vegas Aces

The Minnesota Lynx vs. the Seattle Storm

2023 MVP Breanna Stewart joined the Liberty in free agency last February after playing her first seven years in Seattle. Joining a core cast of Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, Betnijah Laney and Courtney Vandersloot, Stewart led the Liberty to the finals, where they fell to the Las Vegas Aces.

The Fever are bringing rookie phenom Caitlin Clark to Connecticut, where tickets have already sold out at the Mohegan Sun Arena – the first home opener to sell out in over 20 years, the team said in a press release. Clark became college basketball’s all-time NCAA Division I scoring leader in March and, after being selected at the top of the 2024 draft, has big expectations heading into her first season.

While Clark is the new kid in town, the Las Vegas Aces are the big kids. The team won its second championship in a row last year, beating the Liberty 70-69 in Game 4 of the series despite missing multiple starting players. Even with hoop legend Candace Parker’s retirement, the Aces still have stars in spades, returning two-time MVP A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray.

The Phoenix Mercury will be without star Brittney Griner, the team announced Monday, after the center fractured a toe on her left foot. Griner missed all of the 2022 season due to her months-long detainment in a Russian prison on drug charges.

The Storm have passed on from the Breanna Stewart era, clocking in third on CBS Sports’ power rankings (Behind the Aces and Liberty). The team acquired forward Nneka Ogwumike and guard Skylar Diggins-Smith in free agency to assist the league’s leading scorer, Jewell Lloyd.

The opening night slate will be available to watch on ESPN networks, with select games streaming on ESPN+, Disney+, and the WNBA League Pass. The rest of the season will be televised across CBS, ESPN, ABC, ION, Prime Video, and NBATV.

Regular season play continues until late September, with the All-Star game scheduled for July 20 in Phoenix. The WNBA will pause play after the All-Star game until August 15 this year so the athletes can compete with their respective national teams in the Summer Olympics.

    Growing the game

With the groundwork laid by the WNBA’s previous stars and the addition of exciting new talent like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson, more eyes are on the league than ever before. This year has seen a significant uptick in investment in the women’s league.

The WNBA consists of only 12 teams, with 12 roster spots per team – it isn’t uncommon for a drafted player to get cut from the final roster just weeks later. The Los Angeles Sparks, who drafted Brink and Jackson with top five picks, waived the 28th overall pick McKenzie Forbes on Sunday.

Luckily for players on the bubble, the WNBA is expanding for the first time since 2008. League Commissioner Cathy Englebert announced in October that The Golden State Warriors were awarded a WNBA team for 2025. On Friday, CBC Sports reported that Toronto would be next, receiving an expansion team for 2026.

“It’s complex because you need arena and practice facility and player housing and all the things, you need committed long-term ownership groups. The nice thing is we’re getting a lot of calls,” Englebert said during a pre-draft press conference last month, adding that she was confident the league could grow to 16 teams by 2028.

Along with expanded job opportunities, WNBA players will be receiving expanded benefits previously reserved for their male counterparts. The league announced a charter flight partnership with Delta Air Lines last week so players will no longer have to fly to games on commercial airlines.

“I express my appreciation and support for a bold move by the commissioner and team governors that in turn shows that they understand and value the health and safety of the players. It is time to be transformational. It’s time to bet on women,” WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike said in a press release.

While Clark and the Fever were seen enjoying themselves on a charter flight to Connecticut Monday, personnel from multiple teams told ESPN they had not heard from the league about when they would be permitted to charter.

The increasing investment in the WNBA isn’t just internal – the rising profile of the league has brought sponsorship opportunities to athletes as well. Clark reportedly signed a $28 million endorsement deal with Nike, which announced a forthcoming signature shoe with A’Ja Wilson – the first Black woman to headline a signature shoe with the company since Sheryl Swoopes in 2002.

Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand SKIMS unveiled an underwear campaign Monday to celebrate its blockbuster partnership with the league featuring Candace Parker, Cameron Brink, Dijonai Carrington, Kelsey Plum and Skylar Diggins-Smith. The collaboration is SKIMS’ first to feature female players. The company, valued at $4 billion by Forbes, also has partnerships with the NBA and Team USA.

  • A sellout for a WNBA preseason game? Welcome to the league’s Caitlin Clark era

A sellout for a WNBA preseason game? Welcome to the league’s Caitlin Clark era

    [ad_1]

ARLINGTON, Texas — More than three hours before Caitlin Clark made her WNBA debut with the Indiana Fever in a preseason game against the Dallas Wings on Friday night, some fans among the sellout crowd were lined up outside the arena dressed in No. 22 University of Iowa jerseys.

And Clark put on a show.

The two-time NCAA women’s basketball player of the year led all first-half scorers with 16 points in 16 minutes and finished with a team-high 21 points in the Fever’s 79-76 loss. She was 6 of 15 from the field including 5 of 13 from deep, and had three rebounds, two assists, four fouls and five turnovers.

Her 21 points tied for the game high with Dallas newcomer Jaelyn Brown.

“My biggest goal coming into tonight was to continue to be myself, play aggressive,” Clark said. “I thought that’s what I did. I think there’s a lot to be proud of.

“The crowd was great all night. That’s what you expect with a sellout. Those are going to be the same for the crowds all year long. So whether they’re cheering for you or cheering against you, you’d better get used to it.”

She even had a chance to send the game into overtime. Dallas’ winning basket by Arike Ogunbowale came with three seconds left and Clark’s 3-point attempt from the right corner at the buzzer fell short.

“You couldn’t ask for a better game,” Clark said.

Clark’s first pro basket came on a 28-foot 3-pointer near the left sideline less than a minute into play when the defense lost her momentarily on a baseline inbounds play.

“I was able to t a pretty clean look for my first shot,” she said. “It’s always nice to see your first shot go in when you’re a shooter.”

She hit four 3-pointers in the half and added two of three free throws when fouled on a shot behind the arc.

She was scoreless in the third period and sat for the final five minutes after collecting her fourth foul.

Christina Edge, who lived in Iowa for 35 years before moving to the Dallas suburb of Rowlett three years ago, was one of the fans who showed up early. She said arriving that early at the University of Texas-Arlington’s College Park Center would increase her chances of landing a photo with the basketball phenomenon.

“It’s my birthday,” said Edge, who said her son gave her the ticket as a birthday gift, “and I just want a picture with her!” She carried a bright yellow posterboard sign advertising that plea.

Pailynn Amos, 9, was also outside the arena wearing a yellow Clark jersey with her own sign — “When I grow up I wanna be just like her.”

Rebecca Amos, Pailynn’s mother, made the approximately hour-long drive from the town of Ennis.

“I watched her (on TV) like crazy,” Rebecca said. “So, she (Pailynn) just kind of grew to her. Then we were like, ‘Wow, now she’s in Dallas.’ We could actually go see her!”

Clark received a rousing ovation before tipoff when introduced with Indiana’s starters.

While Clark had plenty of fans in attendance, Wings fans didn’t give her a pass. As she dribbled past her defender at midcourt during the first half, one woman shouted, “Get her! Get her!”

The WNBA’s first preseason game was played the same night the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks hosted the LA Clippers in Game 6 of a first-round playoff series about 20 miles away.

The exhibition game was the first of two for the Fever before Clark makes her regular-season debut on May 14 at the Connecticut Sun.

The game sold out all 6,251 seats soon after it was announced on Dallas’ schedule, specifically requested by Wings president and CEO Greg Bibb after Clark declared in February she would leave college for the WNBA with one year of eligibility remaining. Indiana won the lottery for this year’s first pick last December.

A local television crew recorded the Fever’s arrival at DFW International Airport on Thursday. During Clark’s media session on Friday morning, she addressed the request to sign a couple’s ultrasound picture.

“That was definitely a first,” she said, with a laugh.

    Other WNBA players welcomed her.

“It’s really great that Caitlin’s bringing all this attention to women’s basketball, so I’m really grateful for that,” Wings center Kalani Brown said.

“This is what women’s basketball has deserved for quite some time now,” said Fever center Aliyah Boston, last season’s WNBA rookie of the year and college player of the year. “It’s better late than never. I’m really excited for what’s to come for this league.”

The Wings last month said they had sold out their season-ticket allotment, which accounts for about 2,500 seats.

Indiana will return to College Park Center to play twice during the regular season. The team plays July 17 in the last game before the WNBA’s nearly monthlong Olympic hiatus and one day after the MLB All-Star Game at the Texas Rangers’ home stadium less than three miles away. The Fever also play there Sept. 1.

Orlando Magic give away free tickets as community supports playoff win

    [ad_1]

ORLANDO, Fla. – On the heels of the Orlando Magic’s game three play-off win, former players Bo Outlaw and Nick Anderson hosted a Magic Youth Basketball Academy at the Boys and Girls Club in Parramore.

“It’s possible because they come from a community like this. I came from a community like this, it’s possible. But you have to work to make that possible,” Outlaw said. “We are the community. Our team is in the community. If you go back in the history, our gym was across the street from here.”

Spreading the Magic, the team surprised 23 children with tickets to Saturday’s NBA playoff game at the Kia Center.

With thousands of people expected to enter the Kia Center this weekend, that also means an increase in the amount of people walking along Church Street. In recent years, several businesses such as Cerviche and Harry Buffalo’s have closed.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos]

Church Street in 2024 is much different from Church Street from decades ago.

When Disney World constructed Downtown Disney, a spokesperson for the mouse quickly shot down rumors they were attempting to compete with Church Street Station.

In the 1970s, the downtown Orlando location was constructed into an entertainment district and became very popular.

“It’s really nice downtown. More people should come visit,” said resident Michelle Heister. “I think church street needs a lot more business. I mean, we come down here for the art space, see shows.”

Several new businesses have also opened recently on Church Street, giving many optimism for the future.

Game 4 of the NBA playoffs kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m.

Hailey Van Lith trying to make US Olympic 3×3 team; next college choice to come soon

    [ad_1]

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Hailey Van Lith is focused on making the USA Basketball 3×3 Olympic team this summer and not worried about where she’ll end up at college next year.

Van Lith is currently taking part in a training camp in Springfield, Massachusetts, and will play in a 3×3 tournament early next week at The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

The 22-year-old guard, who played at Louisville and LSU, has experienced success in 3×3 for the U.S. She won a gold medal on the U18 team in 2019 and helped win gold at the FIBA 3×3 World Cup last year. The Paris Games is the second Olympics offering 3×3, after the event debuted in Tokyo in the 2021 Games.

“What I remember most is that every game is so unique,” she said of 3×3 play. “The strategy from game to game is so different. You can’t specialize in one thing and make it as a player in 3 on 3. You have to be able to guard every position for at least a couple of seconds.”

Van Lith has a chance to make the Paris Games because two of the four members of the U.S. team must be in America’s top 10 for total points accumulated in FIBA rankings. Van Lith currently qualifies at fifth.

Playing in the training camp with so many WNBA players — Dearica Hamby, Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard — has helped Van Lith improve her game.

“Playing against them and seeing how I’m able to score and not score shows me what I need to get better at,” Van Lith said. “It’s a little taste of the league early.”

As far as where she will play college basketball next year, she says she still hasn’t signed anywhere yet. Van Lith decided to play in college one more season instead of entering the WNBA draft.

“I did take a visit to TCU and am very interested in them, but I took visits to other schools and was very interested in them, too,” she told The Associated Press. “I haven’t made an official commitment, but I’m very close. The ink has not touched the paper for any school.”

Van Lith said she’s really stayed off social media for the most part since LSU lost to Iowa in the Elite Eight this month. She didn’t even know that Haley Cavinder had decided to not play at TCU and go back to Miami until Saturday afternoon.

She said Cavinder’s choice wouldn’t play a role in her decision.

“It’s a non-factor for me,” Van Lith said. “If she had stayed and I did go to TCU, I’d have loved to play with her.”

Van Lith averaged 11.6 points and 3.6 assists in her only season at LSU, joining the NCAA defending champions for the 2023-24 season. She has the option for another season because of the extra year granted by the NCAA to athletes whose freshmen season was affected by the pandemic.

She starred at Louisville her first three years, leading the Cardinals to the Final Four in 2022. Louisville lost in the Elite Eight last year before she decided to transfer to LSU. She was one of the biggest names in the portal last season and is again now.

Michael Porter Jr. speaks about difficult week after Jontay Porter NBA ban, Coban Porter sentencing

    [ad_1]

Michael Porter Jr. said he received individual texts from Nuggets teammates checking on him after a difficult week in his personal life. His brother Coban, 22, was sentenced to six years in prison Friday for killing a woman in a drunk driving crash last year. And his brother Jontay, 24, was banned for life from the NBA earlier in the week after being investigated in a sports betting scandal.

“Each one of them texted me separately and just told me they’ve got my back. If I need anything, they’ve got me,” Porter said Saturday night after a 114-103 Game 1 win at Ball Arena. “Yeah, a lot of people were reaching out. Friends, family. So to have these guys understand why I missed practice yesterday and just have my back has been big for me.”

Porter’s absence from practice Friday was because he appeared in court that morning for Coban’s sentencing hearing. MPJ addressed the family of the victim, Kathy Limon Rothman, in the courtroom, saying, “I understand your family’s pain and hurt.”

In his return to basketball Saturday, he registered 19 points and eight rebounds against the Lakers.

“We’re human, so we carry our emotions and the things that go on off the court onto the court,” Porter said. “But I’m mentally tough. I’ve been through a lot through my whole career, so it was just another one of those things that I had to try to play through.”

Jontay Porter was on a two-way deal with the Raptors’ organization when he allegedly shared information about his health with an individual he knew to be a sports bettor March 20. After another sports bettor subsequently placed an $80,000 parlay bet that Porter would underperform in Toronto’s game that night, Porter played only three minutes, claiming he felt ill. A league investigation also found Porter placed bets on NBA games, including one wager on the Raptors to lose a game.

  • Will Denver get a WNBA team?

Will Denver get a WNBA team?

    [ad_1]

When Dea Vander-Fertgus first started organizing WNBA watch parties in Denver last year, the first meetup included just Vander-Fertgus, her wife Lindsey Vander-Fertgus and her friend. Her fantasy league included a handful of family members.

“The bar was cool, they accommodated us and gave us our own TV, but then no one showed up,” she said.

A year later, things look a lot different.

At the most recent watch party for the March Madness championship game, the group packed Lady Justice Brewing. Vander-Fertgus has filled two fantasy leagues ahead of the season starting in May and has a waitlist for a potential third.

“Every single seat was filled, people were standing just to watch the game,” she said. “Every single watch party during March Madness got bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Denver doesn’t have a women’s basketball team (or any professional women’s sports team for that matter), which is why Vander-Fertgus has been organizing watch parties for March Madness and the WNBA at large.

But that could change. League Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced at the WNBA draft Monday the cities in the running for the league’s expansion. That list includes Denver, along with Philadelphia, Nashville, South Florida, Toronto and Portland, Oregon.

Denver missed out in 2023 when the league added a Bay Area team for 2025.

But now it’s looking to grow from its current 12 teams to 16 by 2028, at a moment when interest in and money for women’s sports is growing.

“Women’s basketball is not a fad,” Engelbert said before the draft. “We’ve been steadily building this momentum for years and we’re ready for what’s next.”

Engelbert visited Denver in August of 2023, where she met with the Mayor’s office and an investor group that included IMA Financial Group CEO Robert Cohen, Stonebridge CEO Navin Dimond and his daughter Ashley Dimond. The Denver Post reported that former Denver Nuggets player Bill Hanzlik was also involved in potential planning.

The league later announced the next new team would be the Bay Area. But as the WNBA plans further expansions, Denver continues to be in the running.

“We’re getting a lot of calls, we continue to engage with cities,” Engelbert said. “Just last week we got calls from two other cities, and these can either take a very long time to negotiate or can happen pretty quickly if you find the right ownership group with the right arena situation.”

Denverite has reached out to the Mayor’s office for comment.

The potential for a Denver team is part of a larger push to grow the audience for women’s sports in the city.

A separate group of community leaders and investors are working to bring a professional women’s soccer team to the city.

A women’s sports bar is also set to open in Denver this summer, with the hope of partnering with new and growing women’s teams.

“There’s not one women’s professional team here and it just speaks to the lack of investment in women’s sports,” Vander-Fertgus said. “My true passion is basketball but I will be a season ticket holder at any single women’s professional anything that would come here. My goal is that someone somewhere at the WNBA sees what we’re doing here without anyone asking us to.”

For many WNBA fans, growing the fanbase is not just about enjoying the sport, but also about pushing for pay equity in an industry where salaries and opportunities for men far outpace those for women. With just 12 teams compared to the (M)NBA’s 30, there are far fewer spots for women to go pro.

Number-one draft pick Caitlin Clark’s starting salary is $76,535, while the first draft pick in the MNBA is expected to make around $10.5 million, according to Vox.

Vander-Fertgus’ DMs are full of people expressing support for the WNBA. In Albuquerque, someone started a similar group with a localized version of her Instagram handle, @wnbaclub_denver. Vander-Fertgus hopes it will become a whole network.

As for now, Vander-Fertgus plans to continue hosting watch parties as the WNBA season kicks off on May 14. When asked what new fans should know, she emphasized the league’s history.

“It’s important for new fans to know that this isn’t the start of women’s basketball,” she said. “It took a lot of decades to get to this point and all the players that came before are equally as talented and to learn about them makes the game so much more special.”

  • Kings relish taking revenge on Warriors, pushing Golden State dynasty into uncertainty

Kings relish taking revenge on Warriors, pushing Golden State dynasty into uncertainty

    [ad_1]

SACRAMENTO – Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown wasn’t in a sentimental mood after his team routed Golden State 118-94 in a do-or-die play-in game on Tuesday night.

Sure, he spent six years as an assistant from 2016 to 2022 under Steve Kerr and helped the Warriors win three titles.

And yes, his former team faces a franchise-defining offseason as the dynastic trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson is in jeopardy of dissolving once Thompson reaches free agency.

And of course those familiar players, who already looked awfully old and slow in the blowout, will only get older and slower as they approach the back half of their 30s. Even if they do come back, making the playoffs wouldn’t be easy.

So what did Brown think of his team possibly dealing the lethal blow to what was left of the famed “Death Lineup” he once coached?

He had more important things to worry about.

“The reality of it is, is that it’s not my problem, and it’s not my concern,” Brown said, more focused on planning for the Pelicans and the Kings’ second play-in game on Friday. “We’re getting ready for New Orleans.”

He added that he thinks that the trio is still capable of playing great basketball: “Those three guys in my opinion are special, and I was a part of many championships and good memories with them. Whatever they decide to do at the end of the day, that’s what they decide to do.”

The Kings players were happy with, but not overly celebratory, after dispatching the team that eliminated them in the first round last season. Keegan Murray scored a game-high 32 and hit a Splash Bros.-esque eight 3-pointers.

He said that the win wouldn’t take away the sting of last year’s gutting Game 7 defeat at home, but admitted that getting revenge didn’t hurt either.

“It kind of peels the band-aid off a little bit,” Murray said. “They got us last year, and we got them this year under a different circumstance.”

Brown, Murray and guard De’Aaron Fox all credited the team’s dedication to physicality as a key to their success on Tuesday.

One player they raved about was defensive savant Keon Ellis, who went from a fringe rotation player on a two-way contract to the defender who helped hold Thompson to zero points in what could be his Warriors finale.

Brown couldn’t help but compare the stellar stopper to Golden State’s own Draymond Green, a scrappy but unheralded defender who carved out an incredible career on high-flying offenses.
