  • I Buy My Luxe Basics From COS—Here Are 20 On-Sale Items That Will Wow You Too

I Buy My Luxe Basics From COS—Here Are 20 On-Sale Items That Will Wow You Too

    [ad_1]

Let’s be honest. Unless you’re rolling in the dough, buying luxurious wardrobe pieces isn’t always possible. Even as an editor, I can’t tell you how often my colleagues and I have messaged over Slack about our desire to buy Totême or Prada, knowing very well that it’s not in the cards for us at the moment. But just because we lack the means doesn’t mean that we can’t still find affordable clothing that gives off “rich energy” for less. In fact, there’s a slew of places our team loves to shop for luxe staples—including everywhere from Zara to Mango. And while I love those shops just as much as the next editor, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that my favorite is COS. Every time I scroll through its new-arrivals section, I’m left gawking over the retailer’s ability to take classic wardrobe pieces and make them feel luxe through unique hemlines, colors, and fabrics.

No other retailer in my mind understands the assignment quite like COS, so you can see why I was overjoyed when it announced its 2022 summer sale. Finding fabulous basics on sale is fantastic in and of itself, but shopping the sale section on COS?  Top-tier life experience. So as COS’s summer sale nears an end, I’ve taken the liberty of rounding up the best staples to buy right now. And since its pieces always manage to sell out quickly, I’ve also rounded up a few other staples worth purchasing (so that you don’t have FOMO). Your new favorite wardrobe essential is a scroll away.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever cringed looking at your weekly screentime report (don’t worry, mine is abysmal too). While there’s no arguing that many of us would benefit from going out to “touch grass” more, occasionally, there’s something to gain from spending copious hours online—e.g., knowledge about global events, community building, and even a few cute outfit ideas. But possibly one of the best things about social media is that it allows us not only to create or follow but to contemplate.

On a larger scale, these platforms have played a pivotal role in giving marginalized communities the platform to speak up and question society’s power structures. And on a personal level, they’ve changed how we relate to every aspect of our lives, including clothing. When a fashion trend takes off on TikTok, it may seem trite, but it’s actually saying way more about society than we think. A prime example of this is the recent rise of the “old money” fashion aesthetic.

Across Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and various media publications (including our very own), we’ve seen an amalgamation of coverage centered around phrases like “quiet luxury,” “stealth wealth,” or “old money dressing.” While the terms may differ, make no mistake, this idea is centered on discerning how wealth is displayed through clothing. It’s a concept that has invoked strong emotions of contempt and approval.

  • 5 Chic Items That Downtown and Uptown Girls Both Have In Their Closets

5 Chic Items That Downtown and Uptown Girls Both Have In Their Closets

    [ad_1]

While the island of manhattan isn’t exactly a huge one, depending on the neighborhood you find yourself in, the fashion can be drastically different. Uptown you can find a sea of quiet luxury lovers, wearing well tailored clothing with that old-money, “tennis-club-membership”, “house- in-southampton” type of vibe. While if you head downtown you’ll find people wearing the coolest thrifted pieces you’ve ever seen, and people experimenting with trends and aesthetics. However there are a few fashion pieces that bond Downtown and Uptown girls alike. 5 items stand out to me as the crossover pieces that live both in the closets of Soho and the Upper West side: a white tank, a maxi skirt, linen pants, poplin dress shirts, and the classic little black dress.

Keep scrolling to see why these 5 dominate the basics game for New Yorkers no matter the neighborhood.

  • My Style Is a Mix of West Coast Chill and East Coast Chic—30 Items I Love

My Style Is a Mix of West Coast Chill and East Coast Chic—30 Items I Love

    [ad_1]

For the longest time, I thought I was destined to be a California girl. I moved to Los Angeles when I was 18 to start college at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), and once I felt the Southern California sun on my skin, I was hooked. I love everything about California, from the fact that it is one of the very few places in the United States where you can get mountains, beaches, and the city all in one place to receiving my degree at the then Staples Center. I have years of memories of sneaking into gay bars with friends to drink margaritas and dance to Britney Spears.

California has a special place in my heart. However, I’m coming up on my fifth year of living in New York City, and I have to admit the magic and allure of the Big Apple have won me over. At this point, I’d even go so far as to call myself a bonafide New Yorker. I know “the rule” states I have to live in the city for at least 10 years before I get to hold the title of New Yorker, but I’m on what you’d call the fast track. My time living in both cities has had a huge impact on my sense of style. Los Angeles was all about cool California vibes, lots of denim, flat shoes, and colorful dresses. New York is a bit chicer, with great little black dresses, wedges, heels, and the perfect layering pieces. Lately, I have been replenishing my closet after loads of spring cleaning, and I’m finding so many great basics that my L.A. friends would love just as much as my New York crew.

Keep scrolling to see which basics I think would be a hit on both coasts.

As someone who shops both for their job and out of a passion, you can bet my mom, friends, and sisters regularly hit me up for everything from special occasion pieces to the best basics. More often than not, it’s the latter because while trends and statement pieces are important for a well-rounded wardrobe, essentials are the backbone. No closet would be complete without them.

Of course, the better your basics, the better your outfit, so with new brands and pieces coming out every day, it’s a category one could perpetually strive to improve—and strive we do. From tees, tanks, jeans, sandals, leggings, and more, below are the summer-ready pieces I currently love and constantly recommend to my friends. Ready to shop my finds? Keep scrolling.

After Years of Looking, I Found the Perfect Sweater (Plus Many Others)

    [ad_1]

My best friends and I recently spent the day at the beach. As the sun set, a cool coastal breeze came through, and we each reached into our bags to grab a layer. I put on a hoodie but couldn’t help but notice my best friend’s chic sweater. The knit was immaculate, the fabric was so luxuriously soft, and it was exactly my style. I shouldn’t have been surprised when she said it was from Jenni Kayne, the brand with the most effortless staple pieces. (I’m especially fond of the cashmere and cotton sweaters.) Seeing her wear it only made me realize that it was exactly the simple, minimalist knit I needed for summer. So I did what any editor would do: I searched the site and curated my 16 favorite sweaters to share with you. Keep scrolling to see what made the list.

These Nordstrom Summer Basics Are *Chef’s Kiss*

    [ad_1]

If I had to choose one word to describe my summer aesthetic it would be “relaxed”—this is the season I really lean into laid-back looks and keep my outfits relatively simple. Maybe it’s the scorching temperatures, but I find myself wanting to put less energy into styling outfits and instead rotate through a series of more straightforward looks. That’s why I make it a point at the beginning of every summer to arm myself with a collection of quality basics to build my seasonal wardrobe around, as these are the pieces that do the heavy lifting. I always make sure my assortment of T-shirts, tanks, shorts, dresses, button-downs, etc. are updated to carry me through summer.

So with summer on the horizon, I started to take my annual inventory of seasonal staples and note the areas I need to fill in. Once I have that list, I always head straight to Nordstrom. I find the retailer’s basics game to be top-notch, with most of my favorite brands all available in one place. This season is no different, and I’ve curated quite the list of staples I’m currently eyeing to add to my closet. I Was in Need of a Basics Refresh—These 36 Nordstrom Finds Look So Expensive

    [ad_1]

As much as I love to try my hand at one of the many trends we write about at Who What Wear, at the end of the day, I’m an elevated-basics girl through and through. I live for straight-leg denim, crisp white T-shirts, and slouchy blazers that transform any outfit into something a bit more special. It’s not boring—it’s just classic. If you’re looking to upgrade your wardrobe to a no-think chic capsule collection, you’ve come to the right place.

Although elevated basics rely heavily on their simple colors and timeless silhouettes for wearability, there’s nothing wrong with pairing them with trend-forward pieces to make them feel a bit fresher. Now that spring is around the corner and I’m embracing the warmer weather, I’m itching to wear things that are beyond effortless. Thankfully, Nordstrom came in clutch, delivering tons of expensive-looking style inspiration I was able to add to my closet without having to pay designer-name prices.

Not to be dramatic, but I’ve probably spent thousands of hours staring at clothing. With that time amassed, I’ve almost become jaded or immune to overreacting (call it an occupational hazard, if you must). It’s not that I don’t find things exhilarating anymore; I’m just harder to impress. While I’ll always love the adrenaline rush of finding an expensive item for extraordinarily cheap or discovering new trends, these days, the ideal of a minimal capsule moves me more emotionally.

Of course, even with this new-found ethos, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I still occasionally get swept up in my feelings. Sometimes, I’ll scroll through the new arrivals section at Nordstrom or Reformation and audibly gasp at the sight. In those moments, I’m reminded of the unbridled joy that can come from finding great clothing for a great price point. And instead of gatekeeping the feeling, I’ve decided to try to share it with the world (or at least you, dear reader).

After scrolling through Nordstrom, Zara, Mango, Shopbop, and J.Crew, I was able to compile 45 expensive-looking summer items, all under $150. Each of these pieces, for me at least, fit the bill of what we want all our clothing to be; affordable, wearable, and most importantly, jaw-droppingly stylish.

I love clothes, especially designer clothes. But the high price tag? Not so much. Since I always find myself faced with this problem, I set out to find the same high-quality pieces at an affordable price point. I needed to restock some basics such as crisp linens and bodysuits, and I also wanted to invest in some trends including halters and ’90s-inspired tube tops. Long story short: A shopping spree was in order. (It’s for work, I promise.) I struck gold when I found these new arrivals from Express. Let me tell you this brand does “looking expensive” just right. The pieces have the same longevity and versatility of my favorite designer items but don’t cost a whole paycheck. I’m especially excited to wear the halter top (how adorable is that sweetheart neckline?) and the scoop-neck bodysuit—both are made of this super-luxe, contouring fabric that I just can’t get enough of.
