  • New restaurant + bar to replace shuttered SouthPark tavern. What to know

    Charlotte foodies can look forward to a new neighborhood restaurant and bar coming soon to SouthPark.

    The Craic is set to open in the coming months, taking over the shuttered Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern space, according to a news release sent to CharlotteFive.

    Meaning “good vibes” in Gaelic, the new concept strikes a balance between fine dining and a cozy neighborhood café experience. Customers can look forward to classic dishes like pot roast, pork loin and trout.

    Burgers and wings are also on the menu alongside oven-fired pizzas, pretzels and other bar bites.

    “We wanted to create a restaurant and bar that feels welcoming from the moment you arrive,” Parker Starre, co-owner and general manager of The Craic, said in the release. “It’s a place where professionals can meet for brunch or lunch, families feel comfortable at dinner and regulars can settle in late at night and feel completely at home.”

    Starre, a former Rusty Bucket employee turned partner, is part of a larger Charlotte-based hospitality team that brought The Craic to life.

    Veteran operator Chris Healy will oversee the restaurant, with help from co-owener and former WBTV sports reporter Delano Little. Chef Danny O’Connell will head the restaurant’s culinary program, while Sarah Pinto will oversee the bar.

    A sprawling 4,622-square-foot space, The Craic seats up to 177 guests across its indoor, bar and patio areas, according to the release. It will also feature a “a semi-enclosed, drinks-only nook” accessed through a secret pass-through window.

    Other bar highlights include:

    • 30+ beers on tap
    • 8 temperature controlled wine dispensers
    • A curated bottle list
    • Craft cocktails made with house-made syrups

    The Craic will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. with brunch, lunch and dinner offerings.

  • Restaurant + lounge ‘forced to close’ in Dilworth after community pushback

    Lack of support has snuffed out a restaurant and lounge popular among Black Charlotteans, owners say.

    Red at 28th, a multicultural bar, hookah and literary lounge in Dilworth, closed Thursday, Jan. 15, according to a message shared on the business’s Instagram page.

    The memo pointed “to a group of people who choose not to support a business that has operated for 20 years” for the abrupt closure, but didn’t offer additional details.

    “Our doors have always been open and welcoming to all with zero discrimination to race, sexual orientation, religion or beliefs,” management wrote. “Our efforts were heavy to bridge a segregated gap, but there has [sic] to be an honest effort from the other side.”

    Red at 28th relocated to Dilworth from University City in 2021, offering a cozy neighborhood hangout replete with a full-service bar, premium hookah and reading area all under one roof, CharlotteFive reported. Before that, the bar had locations in NoDa and Greenville, South Carolina.

    The food menu featured brunch and dinner classics, as well as light bites.

    On Instagram, owners said the business was run on a passion of promoting diversity and inclusion in the local community.

    “But not everyone agrees with our mission and values,” they wrote.

    So what’s next? Owners promised to share details about a new location in the coming weeks.

    “There is a beautiful vision on the horizon,” they wrote. “This includes a new location, new hours, and as always, dope vibes!”

    Red at 28th didn’t immediately respond to CharlotteFive’s request for comment.

    Local love for Red at 28th

    News of the lounge’s closure was met with anger and sadness from locals:

    • “Unfortunately, trying to infiltrate certain communities isn’t always the best for us. Go where you are loved & celebrated. We’ll be waiting on that next location!” Salena Neilysa wrote on Instagram.
    • “Red@28th has been one of my favorite spots to frequent! I guess Dilworth doesn’t have to worry about me spending money in that area,” Benjamin Moten commented.
    • “Saddened by the news but looking forward to seeing the new location in the near future!” Shamar Farley wrote.

  • New Irish pub to replace shuttered South End lounge seen on ‘The Ultimatum’

    There’s a new neighborhood bar coming soon to South End in Charlotte.

    Ginny’s Whiskey Bar is slated to open Saturday, Dec. 27, replacing the former Broken Promises cocktail lounge at 214 West Tremont Ave.

    The latter closed back in May and had been featured on the Netflix reality dating series “The Ultimatum,” which filmed its second season in Charlotte, CharlotteFive previously reported.

    Remodeling is complete, but Ginny’s Whiskey Bar is still awaiting its ABC permit, according to Business Debut.

    “We’re almost there!” Ginny’s captioned a video shared to Instagram showing furniture being moved into the new space. “Opening day is right around the corner.”

    Customers can look forward to an Irish-style pub serving “bourbons, Irish whiskeys and six Irish and English beers on tap,” WhatNow Charlotte reported. There will also be a dedicated space for shuffleboard and video games.

    “It’s nothing extravagant — just a nice neighborhood bar,” co-owner John Ellison told the outlet. “It’s reminiscent of what the original Gin Mill was.”

    Ellison described the 2,500-square-foot space as a casual hangout to meet up and unwind with friends, Business Debut reported. He added that Ginny’s will have a food truck on-site most days rather than operate a full kitchen.

    Ginny’s Whiskey Bar will be open Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. – 2 a.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from noon until 2 a.m.

    CharlotteFive reached out to the bar for more information on Monday, Dec. 15, and was awaiting a response.

  • Korean-style bar brings soju pours, street food to South Charlotte. What to know

    Beer and light bites are plentiful at a new Korean bar now open in Charlotte.

    Masija, which means “let’s drink,” held a soft opening Thursday, Dec. 4, at its new space in the McMullen Creek Market in South Charlotte, according to an Instagram post.

    “Introducing Charlotte’s first sojubang — a cozy Korean bar for slow nights, small bites, soju pours, and K-drama moments you’ll want to replay,” the restaurant wrote.

    The new hangout occupies the former 704 Korean BBQ space. That restaurant abruptly closed in November after just four years in business, CharlotteFive previously reported.

    At Masija, customers can look forward to classic and flavored soju cocktails, beer, wine and specialty drinks. Korean street food is also on the menu alongside a rotating selection of comfort dishes.

    Masija is open Sunday through Thursday from 4-10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4-11 p.m.
