  • Banff Sunshine Village is Canada’s First Ski Resort Open for the 2025/26 Season

Banff Sunshine Village officially opened yesterday morning, Sunday, November 2, making it the first ski resort in Canada to welcome skiers and riders for the 2025/26 winter season. This potentially marks the earliest opening in the resort’s 98-year history. This year’s opening for Banff Sunshine Village is about a week earlier than both their anticipated opening day and last season’s opening day.

On Sunday, guests were encouraged to hit the slopes dressed in their Halloween costume. Strawberry Express and the Learning Area opened for skiers and snowboarders. All terrain of Strawberry Express is open, including the 7-feature terrain park with two jib lines – one small and one medium.

“It is so exciting to be the first ski resort in the country to open for the season,” shares Kendra Scurfield, VP of Communications at Banff Sunshine Village. “This is the earliest opening in our corporate memory – We are thrilled to welcome back skiers and snowboarders for another incredible season at Sunshine!”

To celebrate the early opening, Banff Sunshine Village invited guests to show their love for the Blue Jays by wearing a jersey or celebrating the spooky season with a Halloween costume. The Banff Sunshine Village team was onsite handing out $10 vouchers to those in costume or showing their Jays’ spirit. Over 100 vouchers were given away to happy skiers and snowboarders.

Located in Banff National Park, Banff Sunshine Village is known for having one of North America’s longest ski season. Just last week, Banff Sunshine was named SKI magazine’s Top 30 Resorts in the West and number 2 overall in the magazine prestigious reader’s poll for the second year in a roll. The resort features over 3,300 acres of skiable terrain spread across three mountains and 137 runs, featuring what is often called Canada’s Best Snow.

Early season ticket pricing is in effect until the resort opens more fully. Information on terrain and mountain updates can be found on the resort’s Instagram (@sunshinevillage) and Facebook (Banff Sunshine Village). • The Coolest Party in the Canadian Rockies, Slush Cup Monday, May 19th, 2025!

For nearly a century, Banff Sunshine Village has celebrated the end of the ski season with a “water ski, or pond skim.” The resort is credited to being the North American birthplace for pond skimming. It’s believed the tradition was started by two friends, Cyril Paris and Peter White, back in 1928. The two were enjoying a spring ski, when they came upon the resorts infamous run, ‘waterfall.’ One supposedly dared the other to ski the water run and the rest is now history. Legend has it, the first pond skimmer on record at Sunshine Village dates back to 1928.

At Banff Sunshine, what started as a friendly dare, has morphed and grown from a campy staff event, to a three-day festival that builds up to the Rockies coolest party, Slush Cup. This year’s Slush Cup is happening Monday, May 19th at Banff Sunshine.

“You know, winter is who we are. As the snow melts, we want to throw a proper goodbye party for our favorite season-winter,” says Ralph Scurfield, CEO of Banff Sunshine Village. “Our goal is to each year throw a bigger and better Slush Cup party.”

This year marks the resort’s 95thSlush Cup (it would be 97, but COVID happened.) For the 95thSlush Cup, the Canadian Resort has invited the University of Calgary Artistic Swim Team to perform the first splash of the event. Following the synchronized swimmers performance, the first contestant will attempt to hit the Slush Cup jump and skim across the 110 ft pool of snow cold melt water. Last year, 100 competitors competed for the crown of Mr. & Ms. Slush Cup.

“If you love winter fun as much as we do, this is your invite to join us on for a fun-filled weekend at Banff Sunshine,” Says Scurfield.

The resort is encouraging guests to embrace the theme, Disco Snow Angel. For participants daring enough to attempt the legendary Slush Cup, the resort encourages all guest to arrive at the Village Sprung Tent early, as registration opens at 8 AM on May 19th, 2025.

For guests hoping to partake in the festivities, access to the Slush Cup festivities is FREE with a Sunshine Season Pass, Spring Pass, lift ticket or sightseeing ticket.

  • Super Angel LX, Now Flying at Banff Sunshine Village

Saturday, November 16th, will go down in ski history as the start of a new Super Era at popular Canadian Rocky Mountain ski and snowboard resort Banff Sunshine Village, thanks to the grand opening of Super Angel LX, the first Leitner-Poma EVO technology, high speed, six-passenger, heated bubble lift to be built in North America.

The new six-passenger, Super Angel Luxury Express replaces a four-passenger highspeed quad chair that was initially built in 1988. At the time, Angel Express made history as the first high-speed quad built in the Canadian Rockies. Like its predecessor, the new Super Angel six-passenger, high-speed chair will change how skiers and snowboarders enjoy winter in the Canadian Rockies with features like heated bucket seats, individual footrests, and a spacious yellow bubble. Built by Leitner-Poma of America, Super Angel was designed for comfort. The lift features proprietary EVO technology. This technology promises a smoother, quieter, and more comfortable ride.

The new Super Angel LX is the resort’s second heated lift. The new Super Angel will fly skiers and snowboarders up a vertical gain of 1,244 ft (roughly the height of the Empire State Building) in just over five minutes. Passengers aboard the new Super Angel LX fly at 5.08 meters per second comfortably in heated, cushioned seats, all under a bright yellow protective cover. Soaring 2,400 passengers per hour, Super Angel LX’s 74 bubble chairs significantly reduce lift line wait times, providing guests with more time to carve up the 3,358 skiable acres on the slopes of Sunshine Village.

“At Banff Sunshine, everything we do, we do to improve the guest experience. It is our goal to operate a resort worthy of our location in Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park. The decision to replace Angel Express with Super Angel Luxury Express was a decision to improve the guest experience for skiers and snowboarders at Banff Sunshine. Super Angel is our marquee lift, with terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.” – Ralph Scurfield, CEO/President Banff Sunshine Village.

Proudly independent, Banff Sunshine Village has been Canadian family owned and operated since 1981. The resort operates under the axiom of safety, service, fun, and continuous improvement. Popular for its natural snow, diverse terrain, and fleet of modern lifts, Banff Sunshine Village offers an equitable split of ski and snowboard runs ranging from beginner to expert.

Super Angel Luxury Express is Sunshine Village’s second heated chairlift in its fleet of nine lifts, spanning 3,358 acres across three mountains – Lookout Mountain, Goat’s Eye Mountain, and Mount Standish. The resort is part of the Ikon Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, and SkiBig3 Pass.

About Banff Sunshine Village: Located 7,000 feet above sea level (2,133 meters) lives Banff Sunshine Village, nestled between the peaks of the Canadian Rockies in Banff National Park. • Experience Alberta’s Larch Season at the Banff Sunshine Meadows

Experience Alberta’s Larch Season at the Banff Sunshine Meadows

Witness the spectacular larch trees turn golden this fall at Banff Sunshine Meadows. Nestled high in the Canadian Rockies at 7,000 feet above sea level, observe the rare and stunning transformation as Alberta’s larch trees turn a golden hue at the world-class resort, Banff Sunshine Village

As cool air moves into the valley, the larch tree undergoes a stunning transformation during the fall, where its needles turn yellow and orange as they dry. This is known as larch season in the Canadian Rockies. The larch, “Laryx,” tree is a unique deciduous conifer, as the only pine tree that sheds its needles to conserve energy and water in preparation for winter. This marks one of the most enchanting times of the year to explore the Banff Sunshine Meadows.

The larch tree is named after the Latin word “lárix,” deriving from the ancient Celtic word “lar,” meaning “fat” or “rich.” In ancient times, the tree symbolized resilience and adaptation. The tree’s resin was used in various applications, including waterproofing boats and in traditional medicines. Thriving in the high altitudes of the Rockies, the larch tree creates a breathtaking show each fall, drawing explorers to our high-alpine resort to experience this seasonal change.

“Larch season is such a beautiful time of year in Banff National Park; during larch season the mountains come to life in the color of falls, synonymous with the knowledge winter is on its way. With our 2024 summer operations extended this year until September 22nd, we are thrilled to be able to share the beauty of larch season with guests of Banff National Park at Sunshine,” says Kendra Scurfield, VP of Marketing, Brand and Communications at Banff Sunshine Village.

Experience the spectacular seasonal transition as the larch tree illuminates Banff Sunshine Meadows! Take in the panoramic views within a UNESCO World Heritage Site from the Standish Viewing Deck. Banff Sunshine Meadows offers over 10 kilometers (over 6 miles) of trails perfect for hiking, sightseeing, and photography.

“For guests looking for jaw-dropping scenery this larch season, they’ll find it at Sunshine Meadows,” adds Scurfield. “There is plenty of parking available at Sunshine and no reservations are needed.”

Visitors to Banff Sunshine Meadows can enjoy a 22-minute scenic Sunshine Village gondola ride and sightseeing chairlift for only $68 + GST for adults and $35 + GST for youth tickets. Overnight guests of the resort sleep mountainside in luxury, with direct access to the meadows at Banff’s only mountain-top hotel, Sunshine Mountain Lodge.

The spectacular larch season is here for a limited time at the Banff Sunshine Meadows, open daily from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. until September 22, 2024.

  • Coming Soon to Banff Sunshine Village This Winter 2024: The New Super Angel Luxury Chairlift

Coming Soon to Banff Sunshine Village This Winter 2024: The New Super Angel Luxury Chairlift

This winter, take flight on Banff Sunshine Village’s new chairlift, Super Angel. Built by Leitner-Poma, Super Angel will be North America’s first EVO six-passenger, heated, luxury chairlift!

The new Super Angel chairlift replaces the 35-year-old quad chair, Angel Express. Super Angel will be ready for skiers and snowboarders come November 2025.

“At Banff Sunshine, it’s our wish to be worthy of our location in Canada’s first National Park. As such, we believe in reinvesting into our guest experience. The new Super Angel will enhance the experience for all who visit our mountain resort. The lift itself is a state-of-the-art, luxury experience equipped with direct drive technology, featuring a six-passenger, high-speed chair with heated bucket seats, footrests, and a yellow bubble cover,” says Kendra Scurfield, VP Brand & Communications at Banff Sunshine.

The new lift will service terrain on Look Out Mountain. For the past 60+ years, guests have enjoyed the iconic terrain offered by Look Out Mountain (Delirium Dive, Angel Flight, & Piste Noir).

Super Angel will be the third incarnation of the popular lift. The original chair, built in the 1960s, was a two-passenger, fixed-grip lift. The lift was upgraded in 1988 to Angel Express, the first high-speed quad chair in Banff National Park. The high-speed quad transformed how the mountain skied.

The EVO technology, developed by Leitner-Poma, is a direct drive system that eliminates the need for a traditional gearbox, which results in a smoother, quieter ride.

Construction on the Super Angel lift began on May 13th, 2024. The new Super Angel’s larger size requires a wider lift line and new towers. Resort guests can watch the construction of Super Angel live while exploring the Sunshine Meadows this summer 2024.

For those who loved old Angel, you’ll be able to visit her at Castle Mountain Resort in the future. Angel Express was dismantled and transported to the southern Alberta resort.

“All of us at Banff Sunshine are looking forward to staying warm as we fly up the slopes in luxury,” continues Scurfield.

Super Angel Express will be the resort’s, (and Banff National Park’s), second heated luxury lift.

Flock Together to Banff Sunshine for the 94th Annual Slush Cup

An iconic Canadian Rockies tradition continues with the 94th final splash of the 23/24 Winter Ski and Snowboard Season. Banff Sunshine’s Slush Cup is the longest-running end-of-ski-season pond skimming event in North America. Skiers and snowboarders flock together at the shine on Slush Cup Monday, May 20, 2024.

To celebrate Canada’s longest non-glacial ski season, Banff Sunshine Village hosts the biggest farewell winter party they can, the 94th Slush Cup. This year, 100 competitors from around the world will attempt to skim across Canadian Rocky Mountain Slush for the honoring title of, “Mrs. SLUSH CUP,” and, “Mr. SLUSH CUP.” The title comes with a cash prize of $1,000 and a 24/25 Banff Sunshine season pass.

On May 20, buckle up your boots and snap on your snorkels for Banff Sunshine’s 94th Slush Cup. Cheer on riders as they skim (or swim) across the slushy pool in costumes designed to impress a panel of celebrity judges.
