Flock Together to Banff Sunshine for the 94th Annual Slush Cup

An iconic Canadian Rockies tradition continues with the 94th final splash of the 23/24 Winter Ski and Snowboard Season. Banff Sunshine’s Slush Cup is the longest-running end-of-ski-season pond skimming event in North America. Skiers and snowboarders flock together at the shine on Slush Cup Monday, May 20, 2024.

To celebrate Canada’s longest non-glacial ski season, Banff Sunshine Village hosts the biggest farewell winter party they can, the 94th Slush Cup. This year, 100 competitors from around the world will attempt to skim across Canadian Rocky Mountain Slush for the honoring title of, “Mrs. SLUSH CUP,” and, “Mr. SLUSH CUP.” The title comes with a cash prize of $1,000 and a 24/25 Banff Sunshine season pass.

The origins of Slush Cup trace back nearly a century, to a dare between friends on a particularly slushy day in the spring of 1928. As the legend goes, two buddies skiing the slopes of Sunshine encountered a patch of slush that beckoned them to attempt a daring feat: skiing across the slush.

“What once was a friendly dare is now the coolest party in the Canadian Rockies,” explains Kendra Scurfield, VP of Brand and Communications at Banff Sunshine Village.

The Untracked Concert Series presented by Coors Light is back! As of April 6, 2024, all the way until Slush Cup Monday, May 20, 2024, Banff Sunshine Village is hosting live music from local DJs and artists for their spring concert series. And, after traveling back to Banff just before Christmas, I have a hard time choosing a favorite season!

Go Dog Sledding with Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours

There’s nothing quite like the exhilarating adventure of dog sledding! We joined Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. You have the option to self-drive your sled, which is so fun.

The baby and I were cozied up under a sheepskin in the sled while my husband commanded the pack. We sprinted along an evergreen-lined trail as soft snowflakes fell from above.

It was straight out of a fairytale!

We traveled to Banff with our 17-month-old toddler, and he was JUST old enough (from our experience) for the adventure. Remember, every child is different and this is an adventurous experience that might be better suited for an older kiddo!

We opted for the shortest “Powder Hound Express” tour, which is advertised as 2 hours, but it was more like 4 hours from start to finish with bus transfers. Things got a little hairy after we finished dog sledding because we pushed nap time, but our little one LOVED the dog sledding!

Entire board at Banff Centre dismissed by Alberta government | Globalnews.ca

The Alberta government has dismissed the entire board of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and replaced it with a temporary administrator.

The centre in the mountain town of Banff, west of Calgary, develops and promotes creative work in the arts, sciences, business and the environment.

The government said in a news release late Thursday that it’s supporting the centre as it focuses on its mandate while “strengthening its future competitiveness and sustainability.”

Minister of Advanced Education Rajan Sawhney said the government appreciated the service of the former board members, including the chair, government appointees and board of governor appointees.

“They have given their time and attention to furthering this important institution, and their collective contributions have positively positioned the Banff Centre for future success,” she said in a statement.

“This change offers an opportunity to focus on a refreshed future for the Banff Centre.”

The province said the temporary administrator, Paul Baay, will review the internal processes and policies at the Banff Centre over the next six to nine months, and take on the responsibilities of the board of governors until a new chair and board can be appointed.

Sawhney said he has a wide range of relevant experience that will make him an effective administrator.

“I am confident in his ability to fulfil his role in place of the board of governors of the Banff Centre until a new chair and board are appointed,” she said.

Baay, who’s president and chief executive officer of Touchstone Exploration Inc., worked for various oil and gas companies in the past 25 years.

He’s also the current chairman of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and served on the board of the National Gallery of Canada for more than 14 years.

In May, the Alberta Securities Commission said in a new release that it had concluded a settlement agreement with Baay after he admitted to tipping, which means he revealed non-public information about his company to another person before general disclosure to the capital markets.

Baay paid $40,000 to the commission and committed to training in best practices for public company governance and disclosure.
