    Look no further than these cobweb brownies! A super simple homemade black cocoa brownie is topped with melted and stretch marshmallow giving the illusion of cobwebs. The flavor of the brownies is rich and chocolaty and reminiscent to the flavor of Oreos. Paired with the marshmallow, sends these decadent brownies over the top.

    WHAT IS BLACK COCOA POWDER?

    Black cocoa has a distinct and mild chocolate flavor and is processed in a way that makes it darker in color. It is lower in acidity, which allows its distinct flavor to shine. Love Oreos? That’s probably because of the black cocoa powder (and the cream filled middle!).

    To Make These Cobweb Brownies You Will Need:

    • nonstick baking spray with flourFor greasing the pan.
    • unsalted butterAdds moisture, richness and flavor.
    • 60% cacao bittersweet chocolateLends rich, deep and balanced chocolate flavor.
    • granulated white sugarFor sweetening and flavor.
    • dark brown sugarAlso lends sweetness, subtle caramel-like flavor and gives the brownies a fudgy texture.
    • pure vanilla extractAdds warmth and enhances all of the other flavors in this recipe.
    • eggsActs as a binding agent, helps the brownies rise and adds rich flavor.
    • unbleached all-purpose flourAdds structure and is the base of the brownie batter.
    • black cocoa powderGives these brownies that dark black color and Oreo-like flavor.
    • fine saltEnhances the flavor of the brownies.
    • marshmallowsI like to use mini but any will work.

    Preheat  your oven to 350°F (or 180°C).

    Line a 9×9 metal baking pan with parchment and spray side and bottom of the pan with a nonstick baking spray with flour.

    Make The Brownies:

    In a 3-quart sauce pan, add 1 cup unsalted butter and 8 ounces of chopped 60% bittersweet chocolate baking bar.

    Heat over low, stirring until melted. Remove off of the heat and let cool for a few minutes.

    Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, measure and add in 2/3 cup unbleached all purpose flour, 1/3 cup black cocoa powder and 1/2 teaspoon fine salt. Whisk to combine and set off to the side.

    To the semi-cooled chocolate, add in 1 cup granulated white sugar and 3/4 cup dark brown sugar.

    Stir until just mixed through a bit.

    Switch over to a whisk, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

    Next add in the 5 whole eggs, one at a time.

    Whisking well after each egg.

    Lastly, add in the black cocoa/flour mixture.

    Switch back to a spatula and scrape the sides and bottom of the pan.

    Bake on the middle rack for 35 to 40 minutes OR until desired doneness. I bake mine for 40 minutes. Remove and let cool for 15 minutes before using the parchment paper to lift the brownies out of the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

    Make the Marshmallow “Cobwebs”:

    Once the brownies are completely cooled. Add 1 cup of mini marshmallows to a microwave-safe dish.

    Microwave for 15 to 20 seconds or until melted. Be sure to test the marshmallows to make sure it isn’t too hot .

    Using both hands, grab some of the warm melted marshmallow and stretch it out, draping the strings or “webs” over the top of the brownies.

    • 1 cup unsalted butter
    • 8 ounces 60% cacao bittersweet chocolate baking bar, I use Ghirardelli
    • 2/3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
    • 1/3 cup dutch black cocoa
    • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
    • 1 cup granulated white sugar
    • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
    • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    • 5 large eggs, at room temperature
    • 1 cup miniature marshmallows
    • Preheat  your oven to 350°F (or 180°C).Line a 9×9 metal baking pan with parchment and spray side and bottom of the pan with a nonstick baking spray with flour.
    • In a 3-quart sauce pan, add unsalted butter and chopped bittersweet chocolate. Heat over low, stirring until melted. Remove off of the heat and let cool for a few minutes.

    • Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, measure and add in the flour, black cocoa powder and fine salt. Whisk to combine and set off to the side.

    • To the semi-cooled chocolate, add in both sugars, stir until just mixed through a bit. Add in vanilla extract, switch over to a whisk, and whisk until thoroughly combined.

    • Next add in the eggs, one at a time. Whisking well after each egg.

    • Lastly, add in the black cocoa/flour mixture and whisk until incorporated. Switch back to a spatula and scrape the sides and bottom of the pan.

    • Pour the brownie batter into your prepared pan and spread the batter out evenly. Bake on the middle rack for 35 to 40 minutes OR until desired doneness. I bake mine for 40 minutes. Remove and let cool completely.

    • Once the brownies are cooled. Add the mini marshmallows to a microwave-safe dish. Microwave for 15 to 20 seconds or until melted. Test the marshmallows to make sure it isn’t too warm and then using both hands, grab some of the warm melted marshmallow and stretch it out, draping the strings or “webs” over the top of the brownies.

    • Let sit for 15 mintues before slicing and serving.

    These Spiced Cupcakes with Brown Butter Cream Cheese Frosting taste like fall! Tender brown sugar sour cream cupcakes, spiced with my homemade apple pie spice, ground ginger and clove are topped with a simple brown butter cream cheese frosting. This recipe yields 12 cupcakes.

    Sometimes I get inspired by the food in books and movies.

    If you’ve been hanging around here the last 15 years you may remember this clementine cake (from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) or this Christmas fettuccine from The Holiday movie. These spiced cupcakes were inspired by a book I recently read. And although it wasn’t my favorite book that I’ve ever read, I couldn’t stop thinking about a cupcake that was mentioned in the story. It was a spiced cupcake piled high with thick frosting, and for that reason alone, I had to make something similar.

    These brown sugar sour cream cupcakes are spiced with ground ginger and clove along with my homemade apple pie spice which contains a perfect blend of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and allspice. And if that doesn’t already sound incredible, imagine them piled high with brown butter cream cheese frosting.

    To Make These Spiced Cupcakes You Will Need:

    for the cupcakes:

    • unbleached all-purpose flourThe base for the cake batter. Can substitute gluten-free 1 for 1 flour.
    • baking powderCreates a leavening effect that makes the cupcakes rise with a light texture.
    • apple pie spiceI use this homemade recipe.
    • ginger (ground) – Gives a pungent, spicy and sweet flavor.
    • clove (ground) – A pungent warm spice with a distinct and intense flavor and aroma.
    • fine saltUse either sea salt or pink himalayan.
    • light brown sugarSweetens and gives the cupcakes flavor.
    • granulated sugar (white) – A pungent warm spice with a distinct and intense flavor and aroma.
    • eggsAdds richness and flavor.
    • sour creamHelps to tenderize the cupcakes and the fat adds moisture and flavor.
    • unsweetened apple sauceAdds moisture without added fat.
    • vanilla bean pasteAdds warmth and enhances all of the other flavors in this recipe. Or substitute with pure vanilla extract.
    • cinnamon (ground) – For sprinkling on top of frosting. Lends a distinct warm and woodsy flavor.

    • cream cheeseSet out to soften to room temperature.
    • brown butter (solidified) – Adds richness and nutty flavor.
    • fine saltEnhances the flavors in the frosting. Use pink himalayan or sea salt.
    • sifted powdered sugarWill sweeten and thicken the frosting.

    BROWN THE BUTTER FOR THE FROSTING:

    The day before or morning of baking, melt 6 tablespoons in a skillet, stirring often, until the milk solids turn golden brown. Here is a step-by-step post showing you how to make brown butter.

    Let it cool completely until the butter solidifies. It’s okay to refrigerate it to speed up the process, but it will need to come back up to room temperature in order for it to blend with the cream cheese.

    Preheat your oven to 350°F (or 180°C).

    Make The Cupcakes:

    In a mixing bowl, measure and add in 1¼ cup unbleached all-purpose flour, 1 rounded teaspoon apple pie spice, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/8 teaspoon ground clove and 1/2 teaspoon fine salt.

    Whisk to combine and set off to the side.

    In the bowl of your stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the unsalted butter with 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar and 1/4 cup granulated sugar on medium-high speed for 2 minutes until light and fluffy.

    Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and on medium speed, add in the 2 eggs in one at a time.

    Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl.

    Add in the 1/2 cup sour cream, 2 tablespoons applesauce and 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste or pure vanilla extract.

    Mix until incorporated. Again, scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl.

    Gradually add in the dry ingredients, mixing and scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as you go.

    Perfection.

    Divide the batter among the liners filling approximately 2/3 of the way full. Bake on the middle rack of your preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes OR until a toothpick/tester comes out clean with a few crumbs attached, when inserted into the middle.

    Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes.

    Then carefully remove each cupcake and place on a wire rack to cool completely.

    Make The Brown Butter Cream Cheese Frosting:

    In the bowl of your stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, add in the 6 tablespoons solidified browned butter, 8 ounces softened cream cheese and a pinch of fine salt. Blend on medium speed for 2 minutes.

    Gradually add in 3 to 3½ cups of sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low to medium-low speed to incorporate. Scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as you go.

    Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, fill a pastry bag (with the frosting tip you prefer) with the brown butter cream cheese frosting. Pipe the frosting on top of each cupcake and sprinkle a little cinnamon over top.

    • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
    • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
    • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
    • 1/2 cup full-fat sour cream, at room temperature
    • 2 tablespoon unsweetened applesauce
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste, or pure vanilla extract

    FOR THE FROSTING:

    • brown butter
    • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
    • 1 pinch fine salt, pink himalayan or sea salt
    • 3 to 3½ cups powdered sugar, sifted

    FOR SERVING:

    • ground cinnamon, for sprinkling over frosting
    • coarse sparkling sugar, for sprinkling over frosting (optional)

    • Stop to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. Then on medium speed, add in the eggs one at a time. Add in the sour cream, applesauce and vanilla bean paste (or pure vanilla extract). Mix until incorporated. Again, scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl.

    • Gradually add in the dry ingredients, mixing and stopping to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl as you go.

    • Divide the batter among the liners filling approximately 2/3 of the way full. Bake on the middle rack of your preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes OR until a toothpick/tester comes out clean with a few crumbs attached, when inserted into the middle. Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Carefully remove each cupcake and place on a wire rack to cool completely.

    MAKE THE BROWN BUTTER CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

    • In the bowl of your stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, add in. the solidified browned butter, cream cheese and a pinch of fine salt. Blend on medium speed for 2 minutes.

    • Gradually add in the sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low to medium-low speed to incorporate. Scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as you go.

    • Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, fill a pastry bag (with the frosting tip you prefer) with the brown butter cream cheese frosting. Pipe the frosting on top and sprinkle a little cinnamon over top and/or coarse sparkling sugar.

This is a versatile dish since we added in some great spices but you could mix it up and make it your own. You can also use any apples you like in this dish.

    We used cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in this dessert but you can easily switch that up. Add in some allspice or top it with cinnamon sugar if you like. Caramel sauce is always a good addition too!     Spiced Apple Cobbler

    This spiced apple cobbler has all the wonderful seasonings that go with apples. Made in an iron skillet or a 2 quart baking dish and comes together quickly.

    • 6 to 8 cups apples peeled and chopped (I used 8 small Gala apples)
    • 3/4 cup brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

    Topping for chopped apples:

    • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 3/4 cup white granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup evaporated milk could use regular milk
    • 4 tablespoons butter melted
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 egg
    • Whisk together the brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in a bowl. Toss the chopped apples in the sugar and spice mixture. Add apples to the bottom of a 10 inch iron skillet or 2 quart baking dish.

    • Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a bowl. Stir in milk, butter, vanilla extract and egg. Spread over apples in dish. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven 45 to 50 minutes until crust is done and brown on top. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream on top.

    I usually sprinkle on some extra cinnamon before cooking just because my family loves it and cannot get enough of it. You could sprinkle some cheese on the apples before adding the topping if you like cheese but we like it as stated above and it is one of our favorites.

    Southern Pecan Cookies

    Southern sour cream pecan cookies are good anytime and wonderful for the holidays.

    Course Cookies

    Cuisine American

    • 1/2 cup oil I use Canola
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 cup pecan pieces

    Topping

    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • In a large mixing bowl whisk together the oil, eggs, sugar, vanilla and sour cream. Add flour, baking powder, salt, and soda and mix well with a large spoon. Fold in pecans. In a smaller bowl mix the sugar and cinnamon for the topping. Batter will look like cake batter. 

    • Drop by tablespoon full onto a very lightly sprayed cookie sheet. Sprinkle a pinch of the sugar and cinnamon topping on each cookie. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven 15 to 20 minutes. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen depending on the size you make the cookies.

    These cookies make about 2.5 dozen, so I set the servings at 8 since most people have about 4 cookies.

  • ‘I’m sifting everything from now on’: California woman starts making Betty Crocker brownies. Then she sees something moving

    A California woman’s baking session turned from sweet to sickening when she discovered something alive in her brownie mix. Safe to say, she probably didn’t end up finishing the baking process.

    Woman Finds Maggot in Brownie Mix

    In a viral video with more than 65,000 views, content creator Jay (@justenejanik) captures the disturbing moment she realizes what was in her Betty Crocker brownie mix. The video shows what appears to be a maggot covered in brownie powder, clearly moving around in the sifter.

    “Bro, it’s like a maggot or something,” someone says in the video as they film the unwelcome discovery.

    “We decided to make some brownies today and after sifting why did we find THIS???? Be careful when using @Betty Crocker mix yall,” she said in the caption.

    The fact that she was sifting the mix (a step many home bakers skip) saved her from baking the contaminated ingredients into her brownies. Had she simply dumped the mix into a bowl as the package instructions suggest, the maggot likely would have ended up in the finished product.

    Why You Should Sift

    Jay’s experience serves as an unexpected argument for the extra step of sifting dry baking ingredients. Even when using pre-mixed products. While sifting is traditionally done to break up clumps and aerate flour for lighter baked goods, it apparently has the added benefit of catching unwanted protein sources before they end up in your dessert.

    Are Maggots Safe to Eat?

    Maggots are fly larvae that are often found around contaminated food. While most foods with maggots aren’t safe to eat, the bigger concern is what the larvae have been exposed to, Healthline reported.

    Healthline explains that houseflies commonly use animal and human feces as breeding sites. This is as well as garbage and rotting organic material. This means maggots can carry harmful bacteria like Salmonella enteritidis and E. coli. If consumed, these bacteria can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, cramping, and fatigue.

    The good news, according to Healthline, is that cooking typically kills both maggots and any bacteria they carry. However, the publication notes that eating maggot-infested food raw or discovering contamination after the fact can lead to bacterial poisoning or even myiasis, an infection where maggots infest living tissue in the gastrointestinal tract.

    For packaged dry goods like brownie mix, contamination typically occurs either during the manufacturing process. Or due to improper storage conditions that allow pests to access the product. Healthline recommends keeping food storage areas clean and dry, and inspecting packages for any signs of damage or pest activity before use.

    FDA Allows Insect Parts in Food—But Has Limits

    While Jay’s maggot discovery is understandably disturbing, it may be surprising to learn that some level of insect contamination is actually legally allowed in processed foods. According to CBS News, the FDA permits what it calls “food defects”—the unavoidable byproduct of growing and harvesting food.

    “It is economically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects,” CBS News reports.

    For example, CBS News notes that chocolate can contain 30 or more insect parts per bar, coffee beans are allowed an average of 10 milligrams of animal excrement per pound, and tomato sauce can legally contain about two maggots per 16-ounce can. Canned mushrooms can have an average of 20 or more maggots per four-ounce can.

    Food safety specialist Ben Chapman told CBS News that manufacturers have quality assurance employees constantly testing samples to ensure they stay below FDA thresholds. When contamination levels are too high, the food can be sent to “rework” processes. For example, boiling cranberries to skim insect parts off the top before canning.

    Chapman emphasized to CBS News that while insect parts have a high “yuck factor,” they pose a low health risk. 

    “Insect parts are gross, but they don’t lead to foodborne illnesses,” he explained. 

    The real dangers are foodborne illnesses like salmonella, listeria, and E. coli, which contribute to more than 48 million cases of foodborne illness annually in the United States.

    I have one friend who is vegan and another who is gluten free so I tested this chocolate chip cookie recipe several times until I felt it was perfect. They went over SO WELL! I’ve been making chocolate chip cookies since middle school, and I’m neither gf or vegan and I love the texture and flavor of these cookies.

    Whenever I share something that I haven’t blogged on SS yet, I always ask “should I blog this?” and there was an overwhelming agreement of yes’s. So I did that last week, only to accidentally used baking powder instead of baking soda. Rookie mistake. So this week I picked it back up where I left off last week (hence the bowl change in the middle of the post) and they turned out perfect and now I have a batch of chocolate chip cookies at my disposal. Win-win.

    To Make These Gluten-Free Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies You Will Need:

    • ground flaxWhen combined with water it becomes a vegan substitute for egg.

    Make The Flax Egg:

    In a small bowl, measure and add 1 tablespoon ground flax meal and combine it with 2½ tablespoons water. This is called a “flax egg” which is an excellent egg replacement in vegan baking. Set this off to the side for a moment.

    Make The Cookie Dough:

    In the bowl of your stand mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, measure and add 1/2 cup (4 ounces) very soft vegan butter with 3/4 cup dark brown sugar and 1/2 cup light brown sugar.

    Mix on medium speed for 2 minutes until light and fluffy.

    Next add in the flax egg.

    And measure and add in 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract.

    Then measure and add in 1½ cups gluten-free flour, 2 teaspoons cornstarch, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon fine salt.

    Mix on medium-low speed until incorporated. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl and mix again.

    Using a 2-tablespoon scoop to measure out each cookie and place 8 scoops onto your prepared pan.

    Slide the pan onto the middle rack of your preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes. Rotate the pan half way through to ensure even baking.

    How to Make Perfectly Round Cookies:

    Once baked, immediately remove and using a large mouth glass, place it over each cookie and swirl. While they’re still pretty warm, I’ll also sink a few extra chocolate chips into the tops of each cookies so they look pretty.

    Allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes.

    Transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling. Repeat with the remaining cookie dough.

    HOW TO FREEZE COOKIES:

    Use a 2-tablespoon scoop to portion out the “raw” dough  and freeze as is, placing them closed together on a lined baking sheet. Place into your freezer and freeze until frozen solid. Transfer to a freezer safe container or baggie and store up to 2 months. Bake desired amount of cookies following the recipe instructions. There’s no need to thaw before baking. However you may need to adjust baking time, adding 2 to 5 minutes more.

    • Using a 2-tablespoon scoop, measure out the cookie dough and place 8 scoops per pan. Slide one pan onto the middle rack and bake for 10 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through to ensure even baking and browning.

    • Once baked, remove and let the cookies rest on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling. Repeat with the remaining cookie dough.

    • 1 21 ounce can apple pie filling (I use Duncan Hines Original Country Apple Pie Filling)
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
    • 3 tablespoons butter melted
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 cup nut pieces Optional
    • In a large bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon. Add the vanilla extract, buttermilk, melted butter and eggs. Mix well with a spoon.

    • Spray a 12 cup muffin tin, add about 1/4 cup batter to each cup. Drop about 1 tablespoon of the apple pie filling into the batter. Sprinkle nuts on top. Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven 25 to 30 minutes until brown on top.

    • This recipe makes around 18 muffins.

    You can make these with about any kind of pie filling. They keep well and easily reheat in the microwave. I refrigerate any leftover. We love the filling “oozing” out of the muffins. You could add raisins along with the nuts and you could sprinkle a little brown sugar and cinnamon on top before baking.

    These Apple Pecan Squares are a simple dessert and perfect for just a few people. Add the caramel sauce for a real treat!

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    We’ve received several requests for smaller desserts suitable for just a few people! This is the perfect recipe for just that! It’s made in an 8X8, and it’s a great way to enjoy apples. We added a little caramel sauce to the end product for a little extra sweetness. We love apple recipes and this one was also a winner. We werent sure what to name it, we thought about Apple Pecan Blondies but they aren’t the exact consistency of a blondie and it’s not exactly cake either. So squares it is!

    SWAPS

    This is a very versatile recipe, you can switch out the spices to any that you like. If you prefer allspice, add it, don’t like nutmeg, simple leave it out. You could also use almond extract instead of vanilla. Also, we added a simple caramel sauce to the finished product but it’s not necessary. You could also add a basic powdered sugar glaze.

    Apple Pecan Squares

    These are so easy to make and the perfect treat! They are made in an 8X8 so it perfect for a small group.

    Prep Time 20 minutes

    Cook Time 45 minutes

    Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes

    Course Dessert

    Cuisine American

    • 1 stick or 8 tablespoons of butter melted
    • 1/4 cup of white granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 egg
    • 1 cup self-rising flour
    • 1 medium apple peeled, cored, diced (I used honey crisp. Could use any apple)
    • 3/4 cup pecans chopped (could use walnuts)
    • 1 cup caramel sauce (optional) we used store bought
    • Whisk together butter, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and vanilla extract in a bowl.

    • Stir in egg and flour. Mix well with spoon. Fold in diced apple and chopped pecans.

    • Spray an 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 baking pan with cooking spray and spread batter in pan.

    • Can add extra chopped pecans on top.

    • Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven 40 to 50 minutes until golden brown on top. Let cool. Top with caramel sauce.

  • My Homemade Pumpkin Bread Recipe Is Way Better than Starbucks’

    Place 2 cups granulated sugar, 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin purée, 1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil, and 3 large eggs in a large bowl and whisk until smooth and combined. Add 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 3/4 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, and whisk to combine. Add 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour and fold it in with a rubber spatula until just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread into an even layer.     This Amish Brown Sugar Dumpling recipe is one your family will love. It’s a wonderful dessert!

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

    This recipe for Amish Brown Sugar Dumplings is adapted from a recipe in a very old Amish cookbook I’ve had for years. I have added a few ingredients and used a little less sugar. It’s delicious and a wonderful dessert. We love it topped with ice cream, but whipped cream would be great too.

    SWAPS & ADDITIONS

    The Amish recipe I have does not call for the cinnamon, raisins, nuts or vanilla extract. Their recipes very often do not show exact measurements either. You can experiment with this and leave out what you don’t like, etc. The recipe above is the way I make it for my family. If you are not a fan of raisins, leave those out, too, or use craisins instead. Switch up the pecans for walnuts.

    Amish Brown Sugar Dumplings

    This is an Amish recipe that my family loves. Perfect dessert for any occasion.

    Prep Time 20 minutes

    Cook Time 30 minutes

    Total Time 50 minutes

    Course Dessert

    Cuisine American

    Batter Ingredients:

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
    • 1 cup raisins
    • 2 tablespoons butter softened
    • 1 cup milk

    Syrup Ingredients:

    • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • In a large mixing bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and cinnamon. Stir in the nuts and raisins. Cut in the softened butter. Add milk and stir. The dough should come together in kind of a large ball. It should all be wet but not real sticky.

    • Next, combine the syrup ingredients except for the vanilla extract in a pot on top of the stove and bring to a boil. Remove the syrup, stir in the vanilla extract and pour into a 9 x 13 baking dish.

    • Drop spoonfuls of the batter on top of the hot syrup. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven 30 to 35 minutes until the batter is done on top

    The Amish recipe I have does not call for the cinnamon, raisins, nuts or vanilla extract. Their recipes very often do not show exact measurements either. You can experiment with this and leave out what you don’t like, etc. The recipe above is the way I make it for my family.

    If there is anything we love as a family, it is a donut, and these are the perfect Fall treat. Made with a cake mix, this recipe is even easier. Then, add our delicious caramel icing, and you are in heaven! We are big pumpkin fans and the spices in these are perfect. Add these to your recipe list and make them this Fall season. These donuts come together pretty quickly; you can make these in about 30 minutes.

    SWAPS

    You can switch out the seasonings in this if you prefer to add more pumpkin spice. You can also top this with a cream cheese frosting, just a powdered sugar glaze, or leave it off altogether. We love the caramel frosting. For a bit of sweetness, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top.

    ⭐TIP

    Remember, these are cake mix donuts, so they have a cake-like consistency, and the icing keeps them very moist. We store them in an airtight container and they are actually good, cold if you prefer to keep them in the refrigerator.

    Cake Mix Pumpkin Donuts

    These cake mix donuts are topped with a delicious caramel frosting. These are so easy to make and a perfect way to start the day.

    Prep Time 15 minutes

    Cook Time 12 minutes

    Total Time 27 minutes

    Course Breakfast

    Cuisine American, southern

    • 1 15.25 ounce package Betty Crocker Super Moist Yellow Cake Mix
    • 1 15 ounce can 100% pure pumpkin
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

    Caramel Frosting Ingredients:

    • 3/4 cup brown sugar
    • 4 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 3/4 to 1 cup powdered sugar
    • Pour the pumpkin mix into a large mixing bowl and add the spices.  Stir with a spoon to mix well.  Add yellow cake mix and stir until all ingredients are wet.  Spray a donut pan with cooking spray.  My pan makes 12 medium sized donuts.

    • Spoon the mixture into the donut pan or could use a piping bag.  I just used a spoon.  I filled each cup almost full.  Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for about 12 minutes.

    • Remove from oven and let cool in donut pan for 10 minutes before removing.  This made 18 donuts for me.  Add frosting.

    Caramel Frosting Instructions:

    • Combine brown sugar, butter and milk in a saucepan on top of the stove until melted and starts to boil.  Remove and add vanilla extract and powdered sugar.  Stir well.  Drizzle or pour over cooled donuts.

    If frosting gets too thick just add more milk.  If too thin add more powdered sugar.
