John Davidson, the Tourette’s campaigner at the center of the BAFTA Film Awards backlash, has released a statement after shouting a racial slur at presenters Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo during the ceremony.
“I can only add that I am and always have been deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning,” said Davidson, whose life inspired the BAFTA-nominated I Swear. He was in attendance as an executive producer on the film, which won star Robert Aramayo the best actor BAFTA in quite the upset.
“I wanted to thank BAFTA and everyone involved in the awards last night for their support and understanding and inviting me to attend the broadcast,” continued Davidson. “I appreciated the announcement to the auditorium in advance of the recording, warning everyone that my tics are involuntary and are not a reflection of my personal beliefs. I was heartened by the round of applause that followed this announcement and felt welcomed and understood in an environment that would normally be impossible for me.”
“I was in attendance to celebrate the film of my life, I Swear, which more than any film or TV documentary, explains the origins, condition, traits and manifestations of Tourette Syndrome. I have spent my life trying to support and empower the Tourette’s community and to teach empathy, kindness and understanding from others and I will continue to do so. I chose to leave the auditorium early into the ceremony as I was aware of the distress my tics were causing.”
Tourette’s is a condition characterized by sudden, involuntary, and repetitive movements or sounds, called “tics.” They can manifest as loud swearing or other outbursts, which BAFTA attendees were warned about ahead of the show Sunday night, and prior to Davidson’s leaving the ceremony.
Davidson’s statement follows BAFTA’s formal apology to Jordan and Lindo. “Our guests heard very offensive language that carries incomparable trauma and pain for so many,” that statement began. “We want to acknowledge the harm this has caused, address what happened and apologise to all… We would like to thank [Davidson] for his dignity and consideration of others, on what should have been a night of celebration for him,” BAFTA added.
U.K. charity Tourette’s Action also took to Instagram in defence of the activist, maintaining that his statements are “not a reflection of a person’s beliefs, intentions, or character.”
“We are incredibly proud of John and everyone involved in I Swear following last night’s BAFTA Awards,” the post began. “The film has already raised so much awareness about Tourette syndrome and the daily reality faced by those living with the condition. The impact it has had on audiences, families, and those within the Tourette’s community is huge, and we could not be more grateful for the support the film continues to receive.”
“This moment reflects exactly what I Swear shows so openly: the isolation, misunderstanding, and emotional weight that so often accompany this condition. People with Tourette’s manage their physical and social environments and symptoms on a constant basis. The price of being misunderstood is increased isolation, risk of anxiety and depression and death by suicide… We hope that those commenting will take the time to watch the film, learn about Tourette’s, and understand the experiences behind moments like these. Education is key, and compassion makes a world of difference.”
Netflix‘s KPop Demon Hunterssinging voice stars took the stage at the BAFTA Film Awards in London on Sunday evening, getting a game crowd grooving. In their first-ever live performance outside the U.S., EJAE, who provides the singing voice for Rumi, Audrey Nuna, who sings Mira’s lines, and Rei Ami, who stars as the singing voice of Zoey, performed their Grammy-winning hit “Golden” at Britain’s biggest movie awards night.
Cameras showed audience members nodding along, shaking their shoulders and otherwise getting into the music.
“Performing at the EE BAFTA Film Awards is a golden moment that our younger selves could never have imagined,” the trio had said when they were unveiled as performers. “We’re so proud to represent Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters and spread the film’s positive message to fans around the globe.” The movie tells the story of three women who are demon hunters and use their singing voices to create a magical barrier against demons called the Honmoon.
Emma Baehr, executive director of awards & content at BAFTA, highlighted at the time that the Sony-produced KPop Demon Hunters has had a “phenomenal impact on the hearts and minds of audiences of all ages around the world” since its release last summer. “We are thrilled the talented singers behind HUNTR/X will bring their K-pop energy to the EE BAFTA Film Awards next month.”
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans’ animated musical has become Netflix’s most popular film of all time and is nominated for the Oscar for best animated feature film. “Golden,” the headline track, also scored an Academy Award nom for best original song. It also became the most-streamed song globally last year.
On Saturday, KPop Demon Hunters swept the Annie Awards, the animation honors handed out by the L.A. Branch of the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA-Hollywood. The film won 10 honors, including for best feature, best FX, best character animation, best character design and best production design.

More recently, however, they have enjoyed a new royal admirer: the Princess of Wales, who has chosen these dazzling diamond for a number of black and white tie occasions. When the couple missed last year’s awards ceremony, there were questions over whether the date clashed with the half-term holidays of their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Prince William has attended the awards show on eight occasions since being appointed President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in 2010. His most recent appearance was in 2024 – a ceremony that was missed by Kate Middleton as she recovered from surgery. In 2021, Prince William missed the show as it was held the day after the death of his grandfather Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The Prince of Wales is always dapper in his tuxedo but all style mavens know it is the Princess of Wales who brings the glamour. As the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate first graced the red carpet in 2017 in a bespoke Alexander McQueen gown and wavy-cut Prada sandals. She returned for outings in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023, returning to McQueen for all but one of these outings: in 2018, while pregnant with Prince Louis, Kate Middleton wore an emerald green creation by Jenny Packham.
The 2026 appearance marks the Princess of Wales’ first BAFTA outing in Gucci and a rare turn in the designer for the royal, who tends to re-wear a handful of key British labels, like McQueen and Packham.
It is set to be a starry evening. The singing voices behind the global phenomenon, KPop Demon Hunters, will perform their chart-topping hit “Golden,” and award-winning British singer songwriter Jessie Ware will perform a special tribute during the ceremony’s In Memoriam.
BAFTA is a leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally.
The BAFTA nominations offered some clarity, and enough complication, to keep this year’s Oscar race interesting.
Leading the charge, as expected, was Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which landed a commanding 14 nominations, falling two short of the all-time BAFTA record set by “Gandhi” (1982). The haul puts the revolutionary dramedy in line with “All Quiet on the Western Front” (2022), “The King’s Speech” (2010) and “Atonement” (2007), which all went on to win best film.
All five of its principal actors were also nominated, including Chase Infiniti, who missed an Oscar nomination for best actress last week.
The nominations come after the Academy Award announcement, which isn’t typical in most award seasons. BAFTA is a vital bellwether on the awards circuit.
Typically, the BAFTAs don’t tend to “over-reward” movies. While the Oscars have awarded “Ben-Hur” (1959), “Titanic” (1997) and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) with 11 statuettes each, George Roy Hill’s classic Western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) is the most BAFTA-awarded movie ever with nine. This may present a “spread the wealth” moment at the Feb. 22 ceremony.
The top five contenders for best picture are now known, shifting the focus to the context clues that could determine the ultimate victor on BAFTA, and Oscar night.

Historically, BAFTA has shown an affection toward European storytelling, which bodes well for “Sentimental Value.” The film could mirror a similar trajectory of “The Banshees of Inisherin,” emerging as a multi-award player with potential wins in original screenplay, international feature and possibly acting trophies for both Stellan Skarsgård and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas — both of whom were notably snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild.
As for “Marty Supreme,” which delivered a robust showing with 11 nominations, the moment represents a critical opportunity for Timothée Chalamet to prove himself as the definitive frontrunner in the best actor race. At BAFTA, age carries less weight than it does with the Academy. This is the same voting body that awarded best actor to Jamie Bell, then just 14, for “Billy Elliot,” triumphing over Oscar nominees Tom Hanks (“Cast Away”), Geoffrey Rush (“Quills”) and eventual winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).
Some of the big shockers from BAFTA noms included “Train Dreams” missing out on an adapted screenplay nomination, which I had pegged as a potential dark horse/spoiler for the Oscar statuette, similar to when “American Fiction” (2023) picked up the prize despite there being an unstoppable front-runner in “Oppenheimer” for best picture. That leaves PTA’s film in the pole position, with the adaptation of “Hamnet” by Chloe Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell, which landed a resounding 11 noms, as an opportunity to make a case.
Nabbing 13 significant nominations, the most ever for a film helmed by a Black director, “Sinners” makes the case that it’s not as weak as it was perceived to be by the international community.
The nominations for Michael B. Jordan and Wunmi Mosaku were expected. The omission that landed hardest, however, was Delroy Lindo’s.
Despite earning an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor — and appearing on BAFTA’s longlist — Lindo was left out of the final BAFTA lineup. With that miss, he joins Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) and Marina de Tavira (“Roma”) as the most recent performers to score Oscar bids without recognition from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA or SAG.
Can Lindo still win? That depends on who wins the SAG and BAFTA awards.
What once looked like a clear path for Skarsgard unraveled when he was surprisingly left off the Actor Awards nominations for “Sentimental Value.” The Critics Choice Award went to Jacob Elordi for “Frankenstein,” while the Golden Globe went to Skarsgard, which left the race fractured across precursors.
All eyes will be on SAG/AFTRA’s Actor Awards on March 1, the last televised awards show before final Oscar voting opens, and one which notably does not include either Skarsgard nor Lindo. If Benicio Del Toro (“One Battle After Another”) triumphs, that would complicate the race further and set the stage for an unpredictable Oscar night. In that scenario, BAFTA could ultimately become the most influential X factor.
Since SAG began giving out prizes in 1995, only three performers have won acting Oscars without receiving a SAG nom: Marcia Gay Harden for “Pollock,” Regina King for “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Christoph Waltz for “Django Unchained.” Harden is the only one to not receive a single televised precursor, the same situation as Lindo. For the 73-year-old performer to prevail, he would need to join that tiny group.
The Writers Guild Awards nominations also dropped, which didn’t offer any surprises on the adapted screenplay front since all the Oscar nominees were eligible.
However, in original screenplay, recent Oscar nominees “Blue Moon,” “It Was Just an Accident” and “Sentimental Value” were not eligible. That left the openings for the non-Oscar-nominated “Black Bag,” “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” and “Weapons.” Nonetheless, this is Coogler’s to lose.
There’s a curveball that exists this year that pundits and analysts have yet to fully consider. In a major shift for Oscar voting protocol, AMPAS now requires members to confirm they’ve watched all nominated films in a category before being allowed to vote in that race. The initiative, aimed at strengthening the integrity and credibility of the awards process, combines digital tracking through the Academy Screening Room with member-reported viewings, which builds on a structure already familiar to Academy voters.

This means Oscar voters will actually have to do their homework.
Historically, watching every nominated title was recommended, but not required. Now, studios may have to actually encourage members to watch other competitors’ movies to vote in any given category.
Notably, BAFTA has similar requirements but operates on an honor system, in which members check off the films they have seen. Based on their responses, the category will be opened for final voting.
If an AMPAS member were to watch only the 10 best picture-nominated movies, it would open nine of the 24 categories to them — best picture, supporting actor, adapted screenplay, casting, production design, cinematography, film editing and original score. If members prioritize four more from non-best picture films — “Blue Moon” (Ethan Hawke), “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” (Rose Byrne), “Song Sung Blue” (Kate Hudson) and “Weapons” (Amy Madigan) — they will gain voting access to the three remaining acting categories.
Being the sole piece of recognition for your movie could put you at a significant disadvantage, or it could prove incredibly favorable. When voters take the time to watch a film like “Weapons,” they will see how brilliant Madigan’s work is and may be able to look past her surprising BAFTA snub.
The makeup and hairstyling category has the most sole representation among its nominees — “Kokuho,” “The Smashing Machine” and “The Ugly Stepsister.” In theory, the ultimate winner could be decided by the branch itself, making the makeup guild’s award the most vital clue this season. Other categories, such as visual effects and original song, each have two lone nominees. Could this finally help 17-time nominee Diane Warren take home her first statuette?
This could also affect a song like “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters,” which has a second nomination in animated feature, but that is a medium often underappreciated by the industry. A stellar, top-of-their-game voter (i.e., Kirsten Dunst or Carrie Coon) publicly shares that they do the work and watch most, if not all, of the nominees in a given year. But for those who do not, what will this ultimately do to the winners? Will we have sweepers like last year’s “Anora,” which won five of its six nominations? Or does this lend itself to more surprising winners at future ceremonies?
The best way to predict this season’s outcome may not be about statistics alone; it will be about answering the question: How does an industry voter feel about a movie or performance when they are actually watching it? That’s a good outcome in itself.
The week-long lead-up to the Golden Globes is always one of the starriest times of the year. From recurring soirees like the BAFTA Tea Party to new events, like SiriusXM’s celebration of its nominees in the newly added Globes podcast category, here’s what went down as guests readied for the 83rd annual ceremony on Jan. 11.

A staple event of awards season, BAFTA North America hosted its annual Tea Party at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Jan. 11. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., industry talent, professionals and creatives from the U.S., U.K. and globally gathered to enjoy tea sandwiches (cucumber, smoked salmon, chicken, egg salad and roast beef), scones, pastries and, of course, tea — which came in about four varieties.

David Jonsson is beaming with pride as he sits down to talk to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s late August and the in-demand British actor has come to a local school in rural England to counsel the next generation of film creatives. He’s teamed up with BAFTA and EE for a new initiative, Set the Stage, where 16 teens have been selected to form a crew and produce a short film under the mentorship of Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jonsson, 2025’s recipient of BAFTA’s EE Rising Star Award.
“I’m relatively quite shy,” the Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus star says to THR. “I feel like I don’t really have anything of use to say most of the time. But it’s just not true. And I think Set the Stage and their initiative with BAFTA and EE, it’s just so pivotal in getting the opportunities that I got as a kid that really helped me go: ‘Oh man, I can do this.’”
It’s this experience that made it a no-brainer when Jonsson was asked to get involved with Set the Stage. The hand-picked group of 17-year-olds are on site attending a seven-day immersive programme where they were joined by Jonson and Twisters actress Edgar‑Jones. The actors led Q&As and on‑set workshops with the aim of igniting confidence, creativity and collaboration before the teenagers took to set themselves to produce their project Setting Sail.
The movie explores the theme “growing up as a teenager in Britain today” and follows the main character, Hannah, and her younger self, Peanut, on a nostalgic treasure hunt that rekindles memories of her late grandfather. Featuring a cast that includes House of Dragons actress, Carol Ball, Setting Sail will premiere in early 2026 and be made available to watch on EE’s YouTube channel.

“I think staying playful is everything,” continues Jonsson, who also leads the forthcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk. “It helps you to just continue to understand what you really enjoy. Life is short, art is long. With art, you want to continue to find what feels right to you, because the truth is you make a handful of them that really, really matter. If you’re too rigid, you’re limiting that.” His biggest advice for the kids: “Remain playful and be passionate. Find craft.”
His mission with Set the Stage is about “actively finding” opportunities for new voices in the film industry. “I’m a working class lad. I got excluded from school several times and I found my way into film in a way that feels like I shouldn’t have,” says Jonsson, “which is partially why I feel grateful to be in these rooms and doing what I’m doing. We can’t expect them to make it to the table, because odds are there’s not enough seats.”
It was advice from his mother, he continues, that motivates his work with aspiring creatives. “There’s something about being vivacious in your belief and holding to it. My mum always used to say, ‘Don’t wait to be told. Go and do it.’ So from both sides, if we can find some form of synergy there, the industry will be way better for it. And I’m all for that. I think Set the Stage is doing that.”
His newly-founded production outfit with producing partner Sophia Gibber, greyarea, is about finding emerging talent and encouraging them to push the boundaries. “We just produced a play up in Edinburgh — [greyarea] is a film company but we had a story that I wrote that felt like it could work on a stage, and I wanted to workshop it and try it and play with it,” he explains. “It doesn’t matter really what discipline you’re in, I think storytelling is storytelling. You can be an actor one day, and then you can be the perfect producer. That’s what making movies is. You mustn’t ever get too set in your ways.”

London-born Jonsson still can’t quite believe he’s a BAFTA Award winner, let alone asked to usher in the next batch of filmmakers. “I grew up watching the BAFTAs,” he says. “My parents [and I would] sit down on Sunday night and we’d get Chinese and watch these glamorous people in dresses [at the BAFTAs]. It’s partially because my dad loved film and partially because my mum just wanted to watch glamorous people be glamorous,” he recalls.
“For me, it was escapism. It was everything that I saw and loved in movies, watching these actors be celebrated for doing what they love… I don’t think there’s any better job. To be where I am now, winning the Rising Star Award — which is really all about the people — and BAFTA championing me in that way, I am humbled.”
Michael J Fox brought attention to Parkinson’s at his recent appearance at the BAFTA awards. But what about Parkinson’s Disease and Medical Marijuana
Parkinson’s disease is one of the worst things to happen to a person. Ultimately, an active mind will be trapped in a non-functioning body. Along with the physical symptoms of Parkinson’s, many people with the diagnosis also experience psychosis, which begins with mild symptoms. This mental side of Parkinson’s can start with confusion and progress to include hallucinations and dementia. Michael J. Fox, the actor, is one of the most famous faces of the disease. The actorreceived a standing ovation during a surprise appearance at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) Sunday. But what about Parkinson’s disease and medical marijuana.
Long an advocate for more research and discovering treatments to help patients, Fox has been a leader in the field. His Foundation has shared research to date lacks the data to prove benefits or safety. Thus, doctors don’t have strong evidence to guide recommendations on what to use or how to truly help patients. Still, many people are interested in trying this therapy. In 2020, The Michael J. Fox Foundation convened a workshop on medical marijuana with field leaders and other Parkinson’s organizations.
The limited amount of true research completed has had mixed or conflicting results (some positive, some negative). On questionnaires, people often report benefit on pain, sleep, mood, or motor symptoms such as tremor or stiffness. But many also report side effects. This leaves patients, doctors and researchers with insufficient evidence to guide use.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis. In limited studies, THC has shown to improve both activity and hand-eye coordination in an animal model. A clinical study of 22 patients with the Parkenson’s and smoking marijuana, resulted in improvement of motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and posture, along with with non-motor symptoms such as sleep and pain.
Cannabis has been used for hundreds of years for pain relief, improving sleep and for other purposes, there is still very little evidence regarding its efficacy and safety. Parkinson’s Europe is more positive toward research and information. They note many clinical studies into cannabis as a Parkinson’s treatment have been hampered by regulatory restrictions or have had various shortcomings.
This year the awards will be held in London on Feb. 18 with David Tennant hosting. Nominees include “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
For the first time the “best of British” streamer will also simulcast the BAFTA Television Awards, which will be held on May 12. Nominations will be announced in due course.
In the U.K. both ceremonies are broadcast on the BBC with a two-hour delay, although the final four film awards were broadcast live last year for the first time.
The new deal will enable BritBox subscribers in the U.S., Canada, South Africa, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway to watch the awards shows at the same time they are broadcast in the U.K. It will also mark the first time the BAFTA Television Awards have ever been broadcast in those territories.
Due to the significant time difference, Australia-based BritBox subscribers will be able to watch the awards on-demand.

Last year’s BAFTA Film Awards saw an average of 3.8 million U.K. viewers tune in – almost 2 million more than the previous year – no doubt buoyed by a number of viral moments, including Ariana Du Bose’s now infamous rap.
Pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor has been confirmed to perform at this year’s ceremony after her 23-year-old track “Murder on the Dancefloor” was given a new lease of life in the closing scenes of Emerald Fennell’s controversial feature “Saltburn.”
His friendship with Emma Stone, unleashing new sides of Mark Ruffalo and Colin Farrell, his next film and the limitations of language. Those were just some of the topics that Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos discussed during an onstage interview organized by the British Film Institute (BFI) in London on Wednesday evening.
“I don’t really think of themes themselves,” Lanthimos shared when asked by an audience member what topics and themes he was planning to take on in future movies. “It is more about coming up with the stories and the structures and sensing that there’s something there that I’m interested in.” He also said that it was only “after that that you realize what it is about for yourself [since] for other people it could be about another thing. So it’s hard to say what the themes are.”
The filmmaker said he and his collaborators are “interested in humans and just going in deeper into those kinds of societal structures and behaviors and relationships.”
He then mentioned his latest project, which is entitled Kinds of Kindness and features Stone, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe, among others. “We’ve just shot this film … which is three different stories,” the director said, calling it “a contemporary film.” He added: “It’s three different stories, and we’re finishing the edit right now, and I still can’t tell you exactly what it is about. But I also wouldn’t want to tell you what I thought the stories are about because it just makes it so small. I try not to even think about it during the process, because I’m afraid that it will make my choices more narrow.”
The filmmaker behind such acclaimed movies as Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Favourite also discussed his body of work and creative process during the appearance at the British capital’s Southbank Centre. The event, under the title “Yorgos Lanthimos in Conversation,” drew a big crowd, including Stone, who sat in the front row.
Asked about his continuing creative partnership with Stone, Lanthimos told the audience: “The funny thing is, which I tell her, but she doesn’t believe me, I thought of her for The Lobster as well.” Stone was heard laughing when he said that, drawing appreciative laughs from the audience as well. “She has this wonderful speech impediment, it feels like a lisp,” he continued. “And in the world of The Lobster that would be very critical, a very particular characteristic. So she could be the lisping woman.”
How did Stone end up playing Bella Baxter in PoorThings? “We got to know each other really well, even before making The Favourite, because we started discussing it a couple of years before, and it took some time to get made. So we became friends during that time,” Lanthimos explained. “Then when we actually had the working experience, it just was obvious that we got along and we like working together.”
So he mentioned other projects to the star, “and she immediately jumped on Poor Things as soon as she heard the story. … And the rest is history.”
Asked about how he showed new sides of Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things, Lanthimos said the credit for the acting work should go to his stars and their creativity. But he did share that Ruffalo had some doubts initially, which the director managed to address.
“Well, I just set him free, he was ready to go,” the Greek director said, calling Ruffalo “a brilliant actor.”
“He was a little bit reluctant, I guess, because he hasn’t done anything like that,” he recalled. “Now that I know him better, I think in general he always thinks he’s not good for it.” But then Ruffalo got excited and “completely embraced” his role, Lanthimos recalled. “He came in strong when we started rehearsing. We had two or three weeks of rehearsal. He was the guy who was already there. And we had so much fun during rehearsals.”
Asked about his reaction to the broad appeal Poor Things has enjoyed, Lanthimos said: “I have been surprised.”
The filmmaker on Wednesday also lauded other stars he has worked with. Discussing Colin Farrell and his work in The Lobster, Lanthimos said: “He was looking to do different things,” such as InBruges. ”His comedic sense and, in general, his presence I thought was very strong. And I guess the thing with casting with me is, first of all, I want to try and find people that I want to work with, no matter if they fit the character exactly. That’s why he had to gain so much weight. But it’s mostly about people that I want to work with, meeting them and seeing if we get along.” Concluded the director: “It’s important to find the people that actually have this connection with your work and with you as a person.”
Farrell, of course, also appeared in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, along with Nicole Kidman and then-new discovery Barry Keoghan. Calling him “incredible,” Lanthimos recalled: “We saw hundreds of American kids” for his role. “It was clear immediately that he was so special.”
Having a veteran like Kidman on set also helped. “Nicole is extremely generous,” Lanthimos said in singing her praises. “That helps a lot.”
Overall, Lanthimos said he sees his work with actors as making sure “to give them space … (so) they can try stuff and they are safe.”
One of the things the director has gotten a reputation for is his unusual approach to his prep work and sets. “I come up with games for the actors to get to know each other and feel comfortable to make a fool of themselves and make the process light and fun,” the Greek filmmaker explained. “We shouldn’t be taking things too seriously. We are making movies.”
What games does he make his stars play? ”It’s a lot of physical stuff,” he shared, mentioning dancing and “silly walks” as examples, along with “raising the volume of your voice as you speak in a totally nonsensical way.”
So what does Lanthimos make of people describing his films as absurdist? “It’s always not the most pleasant thing to just be boxed into one thing,” he shared. “I guess there is some kind of absurdity in the films, but I hope they’re more complex than that.”
The BFI event’s description itself also lauded the filmmaker for “his exquisitely crafted, wild absurdist tales and darkly comic explorations of the human condition.”
Lanthimos understands such labels. “I understand why people have the need to describe it a certain way or make sense of it by using language,” he told the audience. “But the thing is, the trouble is language is not always sufficient for any kind of work of art.”

Leading the way this year is Christopher Nolan’s atomic biopic Oppenheimer, which snagged 13 noms, including best film, director, and adapted screenplay. Oppenheimer was one nomination away from equaling All Quiet on the Western Front’s record 2023 haul of 14 noms. Trailing Nolan is Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, who clocked 11 nominations with his latest black comedy, Poor Things. Lanthimos’ haul also includes best film and director alongside outstanding british film and adapted screenplay for Tony McNamara.
Chasing the leading two is Martin Scorsese’s Osage epic Killers Of The Flower, which clocked nine nominations. The 3-hour plus pic pops up in best film, supporting actor for Robert DeNiro, and cinematography for Rodrigo Prieto. However, the film didn’t land noms in either best director or best actress (Lily Gladstone), where it had been longlisted and earmarked as a frontrunner. Jonathan Glazer’s breakout Cannes drama The Zone Of Interest also netted nine nominations, giving the British filmmaker his best-ever BAFTAs haul.
Other leading films include Anatomy of A Fall, The Holdovers, and Maestro, which all clocked seven noms. Andrew Haigh’s enigmatic drama All of Us Strangers landed six nods, and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn have five apiece.
This year, 11 out of 23 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA nomination, including Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), Vivian Oparah (Rye Lane), and Teo Yoo (Past Lives). In other notable acting notes, Paul Mescal and Claire Foy are in their respective supporting categories for All Of Us Strangers, while awards season frontrunners Margot Robbie and Emma Stone fill out the best actress category.
In best director, four of the six are first-time director nominees: Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest), Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers), Alexander Payne (The Holdovers), andJustine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall). Triet is the sole woman in director. None of the director nominees are previous winners in this category.
Standout British titles in this year’s crop of noms include Raine Allen Miller’s debut feature Rye Lane, which landed two noms, including Outstanding British Film alongside Oparah’s acting nom, and Molly Manning Walker’s How To Have Sex, which landed three noms: Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut, and Casting.
This year’s nominations are relatively spread out amongst the studios, with Disney/Searchlight out in front, clocking 22 noms. Trailing behind is Universal (14). Indie studio A24 had a strong showing with nine, all from Jonathan Glazer’s Zone Of Interest. Apple performed the best amongst the streamers with 14 noms, including 4 for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. Netflix clocked 12 overall.
Winners will be announced at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, hosted by actor David Tennant on February 18 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.
Breaking down the noms, Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said: “The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today span an extraordinary range of genres and stories. The field this year is incredibly strong. More films were entered, making the selection process particularly tough for our voting members.
She added: “The films and talented people nominated represent some of the most talked about films of the year, the most critically acclaimed, and films yet to be released and discovered by audiences. With a month to go until the EE BAFTAs on 18 February, we encourage film fans everywhere to watch as many nominated films as possible and find out more about the people who make them by listening to our new official podcast, Countdown to the BAFTAs, which is available widely on podcast platforms from today.”

After a few years away from the BAFTA red carpet, Prince William and Kate Middleton will be present at the Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the best in British TV and film on February 19. Variety reports that the couple’s attendance was confirmed only in the last few days, adding that they will watch the show from the audience before meeting with performers and winners backstage. This year’s nominees include Cate Blanchett, who is a member of the Earthshot Prize board alongside William.
He and Kate have been a regular presence on the BAFTA red carpet for the last decade, but their last appearance at the ceremony took place in February 2020, when Brad Pitt told a joke about Prince Harry that elicited a laugh from the royal couple. Though an in-person event was held in 2021, William dropped out after the death of Prince Philip, and in 2022, he declined to attend due to “diary constraints.”
William took over as the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2010, and in the years since, he has used his speeches at their events to discuss the value of mentorship and diversity in the industry. In April 2022, he and Kate hired the organization’s longtime CEO, Amanda Berry, to serve as the head of the Royal Foundation, the registered charity that oversees their philanthropic ventures. Last month, Kate visited the BAFTA headquarters to launch a short film for her new early years campaign, Shaping Us.
The news comes just days after a source close to the royal household told People that William is still upset with his brother after the revelations in the memoir, Spare. “William is the one who is most upset and needs time to calm down,” the source said.
