The Golden Bachelor runner-up Leslie Fhima ended 2023 in the hospital.

“Hey everybody! I know that everyone was just curious to know what I did on my 65th birthday. I spent it in the hospital. Yes, I had a bowel blockage, severe cramping, came into the ER,” she explained via Instagram Stories on Sunday, December 31, according to multiple outlets.

Leslie, who filmed her health update from a hospital bed, noted that she underwent surgery after doctors discovered the blockage, which she described as “just something so random.” She explained: “[It was] actually, scar tissue from an appendectomy I had when I was 18 years old.”

She went on to tell fans, “If you have severe stomach issues, don’t wait 12 hours to go to the hospital like I did.” Leslie ended her message by wishing fans a happy new year and stating that she was “very excited” to go home to her dog.

Leslie turned 65 on December 28, 2023. Two days later, she took to Instagram to thank fans for their “amazing birthday messages.” She continued: “I am so appreciative and grateful for everyone that supports me on a daily basis. This has been an amazing year for me and I count my blessings daily … 🙏❤️🙏 Happy 2024!”

Leslie was one of the 22 women looking to win Gerry Turner’s heart on the debut season of The Golden Bachelor. She developed a strong connection with Gerry, 72, securing a spot in the final two women along with Theresa Nist.

While Leslie was considered by many to be the frontrunner of the season, she and fans were blindsided when Gerry broke up with her during the show’s November 2023 season finale. “I just want to tell you, Gerry, that I fell in love with you for so many reasons. I really did,” she told him during their After the Final Rose special reunion. “I mean, the way you looked at me and your eyes sparkled, the way her nose prickled when you talked to me, the way we made each other laugh all the time. You got my stupid humor. I was myself with you completely.”

The Golden Bachelor’s debut season has brought out every emotion in Bachelor Nation — including relief that Gerry Turner will find love. Leslie claimed that Gerry gave her “100 percent certainty” that she would be the winner during their offscreen fantasy suite conversation. “You made it sound like you chose me,” she tearfully stated. “You led me down a path and then you took a turn and left me there.”

Gerry proceeded to apologize profusely, telling her it was not his intention to “hurt anyone.” Though Leslie said she was unsure of whether she’d accept his apology, she told Gerry that she “understand[s] it.”

Gerry ended the season engaged to Theresa, 70, and the two will tie the knot on ABC’s The Golden Wedding special on Thursday, January 4. While many Golden Bachelor contestants are expected to attend — with Susan Noles set to officiate —it is unknown whether Leslie will watch her ex walk down the aisle, especially given her current medical condition.

“If it was up to us, we would invite everyone,” Theresa told Us Weekly last month of the guest list. “We’re not in charge of that process. We seriously love every single one of these women, but it’s out of our hands, so [I] don’t know. We actually don’t know the list.”

She added that she is looking forward to “walking down that aisle to Gerry and then saying our vows in front of our entire families.” Gerry, for his part, said he can’t wait to see his soon-to-be-wife in her wedding dress. “It’ll be pretty spectacular,” he added. “It’ll be special.”

Kaitlyn Bristowe Denies Cheating With Tayshia Adams' Ex Zac Clark

    [ad_1]

Kaitlyn Bristowe rang in the New Year with several members of Bachelor Nation — and the result was drama to start off 2024.

The season 11 Bachelorette, 38, hosted a New Year’s Eve party at her Nashville home on Sunday, December 31, inviting fellow franchise alums Blake Moynes (Bachelorette seasons 16 and 17) and Zac Clark (Bachelorette season 16). (Vanderpump RulesKatie Maloney was also at the bash.) After footage of Bristowe with her arm around Clark, 39, surfaced on social media, fans began to speculate that the twosome were dating.

Bristowe — who called off her engagement to Bachelorette season 14 alum Jason Tartick during summer 2023 — initially shared a cryptic quote amid the chatter.

“The vibe for 2024 is messy authenticity over fake perfection,” the post read.

She then returned to the platform and shared a series of statements.

“You would think by now I’d be used to the hate. I’m not. Your words hurt. Your shaming hurts. Part of me feels a little sad and honestly embarrassed for you guys because this shouldn’t be how you spend day 1 of a new year,” Bristowe wrote. “You should not be this invested in someone you don’t even know or respect. It’s actually scary, and I know looking inward might be even scarier for you. But the bullying is next level. You are allowed to have opinions and feelings. But you don’t even know the truth, and your HATE should actually come with consequences. I truly worry about some of your mental health. It’s not OK. It’s. Not. Please. Please feel ashamed of yourselves for treating someone this way who you don’t know. I did not kill someone. I had a party with some of my favorite people. Shame. On. YOU. Not me.”

What happens on The Bachelor, doesn’t always stay on The Bachelor! She continued: “I am not one dimensional. What you see on people’s social media does not mean you know them. And this part might sting … but I would never, ever want to switch places with you. Your life seems so sad. So I will not take the opinions of someone one who I would not trade places with.”

Bristowe, who never mentioned Clark by name, thanked her supporters and implied there was more to the story.

“Y’all wanna feel big round and important but you are small minded and sad. Thank you to everyone who is kind on my platform. Love you guys. You are the real ones,” she wrote. “I wish I could just share my truth and tell you my side. It’s hard to bite my dang tongue sometimes. But you just go on and continue to have your own little made up story in your head and believe what you want to believe. Social media la la land. Good lawwwddd.”

Bristowe included a screenshot of a text that she received from an unnamed person, which read: “But like they don’t know the truth or any backstory. It’s wild.”

‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Season 9 Finale: Which Couple Got Married?

    [ad_1]

The Bachelor in Paradise season 9 finale would not have been complete without a twist as Kenny Braasch and Mari Pepin-Solis returned to the beach to get married.

The ABC reality show teased for months that one couple would tie the knot during the Thursday, December 7, episode, but instead of a pair from this season making things official, Kenny, 42, and Mari, 27 — who got engaged during season 7 in 2021 — invited the cast to attend their wedding in Mexico.

Naturally, BiP‘s host Jesse Palmer officiated the ceremony, joking that “Mari arrived [on the beach] with an open heart,” while Kenny “arrived completely naked” — literally. Jesse noted that despite their “ups and downs” on the beach, the duo found “someone who refused to give up on them.”

The current Paradise contestants were shown with tears in their eyes as Kenny and Mari shared their vows.

“We have been together almost every day since we have left Paradise and the more time we spend together, the more time I fell in love with you,” Kenny said, in part. “I promise to be at your side no matter what, for the rest of our lives — or at least the rest of my life. That’s an old man joke. But in the end, we have so much history here in Paradise. We met here, we got engaged here and now we’re getting married here. I love you now and forever and I know that together we will be the greatest team the world has ever seen.”

Mari gushed over the love she has for her “sweet and loving and gentle” husband.

“Today, and every single day for the rest of my life, I vow to put all of my effort into the health and strength of our marriage,” she continued. “I vow to love you faithfully, always and through everything — the good days, the bad days, rain or shine, until the end of time.”

Although Mari and Kenny kept their Mexico nuptials a secret until they aired, they previously revealed that they were planning multiple weddings. “We’re actually gonna do two events. We’re having our … main wedding in Puerto Rico. That’s where I’m from,” she exclusively told Us Weekly in November 2022. “So it’ll be a small, intimate, mostly family [and] close friends. And then later on, we’ll do a bigger wedding in Chicago for everyone to come out and celebrate with us.”

Three months later, Mari confirmed that she was “making progress” on the event. “It’s been a lot of fun to plan the wedding. I think we’re still in the preliminary stages, we’re still trying to source some vendors and get the major things booked,” she told Us in February. “We’ve done a lot of research and we’ve just been having a good time with it. A lot of times wedding planning can be boring and stressful and as much as it is a lot of work, I think we’re just trying to have a good time with it.”

Mari further divulged that she and Kenny would first tie the knot in Puerto Rico in November. “That’s where I’m from. A lot of my family is still there, so it’s just kind of what I always envisioned for my wedding. I’m really glad that he’s happy to oblige me in that aspect,” she explained, adding that the duo had no problems compromising on their plans for the ceremonies.

The couple will later have another wedding in Chicago — where they live — in March 2024. “We’ve got multiple looks! Because we have two weddings, we’ve got to go all out,” she teased. “It was such a good experience. I actually went [wedding dress shopping] with Kenny’s mom and sister. My mom lives overseas, so she wasn’t able to join, unfortunately, in person. But I just feel so lucky that his family is so welcoming and so loving that they would come to something like that for me — [it’s] very special.”

    ABC/Brian Bowen Smith

The Golden Bachelor star Gerry Turner isn’t focused on his ex speaking out about the ups and downs of their nearly three-year relationship.

“My only response is that I have so many positive things in my life right now,” Turner told The Los Angeles Times on Thursday, November 30, when asked about the recent report regarding his previous relationships. “I have the wonderful love of Theresa, my partner. I don’t have time to reflect on comments like this. I’m happy to look forward.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Turner dated a handful of women after his wife, Toni, died in 2017. One of those women, referred to by the name Carolyn in the story published on Wednesday, November 28, claimed that Turner once fat-shamed her before joining him at his high school reunion.

“I’m not taking you to the reunion looking like that,” Carolyn, who told the outlet that she had recently gained 10 pounds due to stress, alleged Turner said while pointing to her body. The comment served as the catalyst for their January 2020 breakup.

Turner subsequently asked Carolyn to move out of his Indiana lake house and while packing, Carolyn told the outlet that she fell down the stairs and was taken to the ER, something she says Turner believed to be an excuse to delay her move and sue him for the injury. As a result, Turner asked her to leave the property one week earlier than planned and stay in a hotel.

“I really wish this would’ve worked out,’” Carolyn claimed Turner told her as he helped her to her car with her walker. “Call me when you get to your hotel, so I know you made it safe.”

Carolyn, who is 14 years Turner’s junior, met the Bachelor Nation star while working at the Vera French Mental Health Center in Iowa and claimed they began dating him one month after Toni’s death. Their relationship is contradictory to Turner’s claims on The Golden Bachelor that his love life had been on pause since his wife’s passing.

“The idea that I’d go out with a recent widower just mortifies me,” she told the outlet. “I just didn’t see it. Until I went back and looked at my text messages, I never realized Gerry’s texts had turned hot and heavy so relatively soon.”

“Is one ever really ready for another kiddo?” Iaconetti, 35, wrote over an Instagram video shared on Sunday, November 12. In the clip, she and Haibon, 34, are sitting with their 21-month-old son, Dawson, who bit his mom.

“Dawson, no biting. Dawson, no,” Iaconetti could be heard saying. “He’s a love biter.”

In the post, Iaconetti revealed that she and Haibon are getting ready for another kid — but she expressed some hesitation about being a mother of two.

“Is there ever a good time? Having just [one] kid is HARD! Does having a sibling for them to play with really help? There’s lots of things to worry about, but this advice I got from a couple of you that really stuck,” she captioned the video. “You said: ‘If you’re contemplating having another and don’t try, you’ll probably regret it down the road. “Faith and I knew that our parting at the mansion represented no closing for either of us,” Gerry, 72, told Sherri Shepherd on Sherri during an interview set to air on Friday, November 10. “She’s just a genuine good heart. She’s warm, loving. In the hug, we still told each other we loved each other, and that’s just the way it is.”

Gerry made an emotional decision during the Thursday, November 9, episode, when he sent home Faith, 60, following their hometown date. The elimination was particularly shocking for viewers as both Gerry and Faith declared their love for each other the week prior. (Leslie Fhima and Theresa Nist are Gerry’s final two contestants.)

“To try so hard and then have it not work is just devastating,” Faith said in her confessional after the elimination, holding back tears. Gerry told Faith it was a “joy” getting to know her before they said their goodbyes.

“Right now, I’m numb. It’s going to be a while before I figure it out. If I ever figure it out,” Faith said. “I feel like we connected on a level where I was ready to marry the dude. I wanted so much more for me. I wanted so? much more for my kids. … Maybe it’s just not in the cards for me.”

Gerry reflected on the difficult elimination during an interview with Deadline on Thursday.

“I knew in my head what I wanted to do, but that didn’t make executing that decision any easier,” he explained. “What you saw on my face and my behavior wasn’t indecision by any means. It was the inability to find a way to be the least painful to someone in delivering that news.”

Faith, for her part, was brought to the hot seat during the Women Tell All portion of Thursday’s Golden Bachelor episode where she reacted to the “gut-wrenching” elimination — and was reunited with Gerry for the first time. While they both got emotional, Faith thanked Gerry for showing her that she was able to find love again.

Gerry explained that it was important he and Faith had a reunion in order to get “some closure,” during his Deadline interview.

“We had expressed feelings for each other. And to have had that relationship end so abruptly is really difficult. I’m sure it was more difficult for her than it was for me, and I had a really hard time with it. So we were able to hug for a long time,” he told the publication. “We cried together. But I feel like both of us — we got to a point where we were OK with it. As she was walking off the stage to leave, I got her attention. This is one of those memories that I’ll keep with me, probably, forever. I asked for one more hug, and we, again, hugged for a long time.”

    ABC/Ricky Middlesworth

Leslie Fhima has been making a splash on The Golden Bachelor since her first moment on screen.

The fitness instructor, 64, instantly had all eyes on her due to her memorable limo exit during the show’s season premiere in September. Fhima emerged from the vehicle wearing a wig and robe with a walker in hand. When Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner offered her assistance, she threw off the clothes, let her hair down and revealed a little black dress. “Do I look like I need help?” she asked with a smirk.

Her introduction to the ABC series — and Turner, 72  — was in tune with her energetic personality. Throughout her life, Leslie has started her own company, run 10 marathons, had a career as a professional figure skater and even dated the legendary Prince.

The mother of kids Chloe, Eli and Zack — and “glama” to three grandchildren — Leslie brings “a better environment, a more relaxed environment, a more playful environment,” every time she enters a room, according to her son Eli. “Her hospitality is not for profession. It’s a way of life,” he told the Star Tribune in September.

    [ad_1]

Nick Viall’s “insecurities” made him hesitant to start a long-term relationship with now-fiancée Natalie Joy.

“We were long distance,” Viall, 43, explained while appearing on Kristin Cavallari’s “Let’s Be Honest” podcast on Tuesday, October 31. “I was worried we might be in different places of our lives. But she was like, ‘I think we should date here’s why. Here’s how I feel about you, take it or leave it.’”

Joy, 25, initially “peaced out” after Viall “didn’t come around” to her feelings, but he eventually got her back.

“When I first met her, I thought she was beautiful,” Viall recalled on the podcast episode. “I was surprised by how much I enjoyed her company early on and then she quickly integrated with my friends, and they liked her.”

In February 2021, shortly after the pair first went […]

He added, “As we kept hanging out, I think it was just her general confidence and the fact that she was very clear — we wouldn’t be together if it weren’t for her.”

Viall and Joy started dating after she slid into the former Bachelor star’s DMs. They took their relationship public in January 2021.

“Natalie is the first woman I’ve been with where we have so many little things in common that I took for granted,” Viall told Cavallari, 36. “Liking the same foods. Liking the same shows. Doing the same things. … Every day isn’t a struggle.”

After more than two years together, Viall proposed to Joy in January. The couple announced in August that they are expecting their first baby together, a daughter.

Viall previously spoke about the “romantic” way that his relationship with Joy began.

“We kind of kept hanging out, and she finally got to a point where she was like, ‘I want to date,’ and I was kind of like, ‘I don’t know,’” he recalled on the “Viall Files” podcast in February 2021. “She was just like, ‘OK, this is what I want. It’s fine, no big deal, but I’m gonna go do my thing,’ and she did and I was like, ‘What?!’ … She went and showed me exactly what I’d be missing.”

While the duo are gearing up to tie the knot and become first-time parents, Viall has been open about how much Joy has taught him about love.

“Not only taught me, but she’s shown me how to be present,” he gushed to Us Weekly exclusively in October 2022. “And she has shown me just how important it is to take the time in any moment — whether you’re getting a coffee at a barista or you’re checking out at the grocery store, those little moments of seeing people and making them feel validated is really special on a day-to-day basis and especially in a relationship.”

Sandra Mason made the difficult decision to skip her daughter’s wedding day for The Golden Bachelor, and she doesn’t regret it.

“My son-in-law said to me, ‘Mom, the ceremony is eight minutes. The marriage is forever.’ He said, ‘Go. Go!’ My daughter, she said, ‘Mom, I found my guy, you go find yours,’” Sandra, 75, told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published on Friday, October 27. “They were both a little perturbed that I was even considering not going because of their wedding. They’d each been married before. She’s almost 51, he’s 53.”

Sandra was one of Gerry Turner’s contestants on season 1 of The Golden Bachelor. During the October 18 episode, she revealed that the group date — which saw the ladies compete in a pickleball tournament — took place on her daughter’s wedding day.

After the competition ended, Sandra explained the day’s significance while chatting with Gerry, 72. “I feel very flattered, but that’s a big event,” he said before pulling out an iPhone to FaceTime the newlyweds.

Sandra later profusely thanked Gerry for arranging the call and gushed about him further via confessional.

“That was so sweet of him,” she added. “He’s always full of these sweet surprises and he’s so thoughtful. This man is something different.”

Michelle Young couldn’t resist a good pun when it came time to hard launch her new relationship with Jack Leius.

“Hit the Jackpot with you,” the former Bachelorette, 30, wrote via Instagram on Friday, October 27, sharing gorgeous photos of the pair all dressed up.

In the pics, Young stunned in a black floral dress with matching pumps, which complemented her chain-link earrings and high pony. Leius, for his part, opted for a black button-down and cream-colored trousers.

Young has not shared further details about the pair’s romance. According to Leius’ LinkedIn profile, he is based in Young’s native Minnesota and works as a sales consultant for a local insurance brokerage. (Leius previously studied business and marketing at the University of Minnesota before completing a master’s degree in sports management from Minnesota State University.)

Young first teased their relationship earlier this month, sharing an Instagram Story pic of the twosome kissing outside a Minnesota Vikings football game. While Leius smooched her cheek, his face was obscured by a Vikings baseball cap.

Young’s relationship with Leius marks her first foray back into the dating scene since she and ex-fiancé Nayte Olukoya called off their engagement last year.

Young — who was the third Black Bachelorette — found an instant connection with Olukoya, 29, during season 18 of The Bachelorette, which premiered in October 2021. Olukoya proposed during the December 2021 season finale, but after one year together, the couple confirmed their split.

She added at the time: “To you, Nayte, you quickly became my best friend and the love I have for you is incredibly strong. I will never stop wanting to see you succeed. I will always acknowledge and appreciate the adventures, support and growth both Nayte and this experience have brought me.”

  • ‘The Golden Bachelor’ Premiere Is Horny and Heartfelt

‘The Golden Bachelor’ Premiere Is Horny and Heartfelt

    [ad_1]

Spoilers for night one of The Golden Bachelor ahead.

The same song—2022’s “Golden Hour” by indie pop artist JVKE—plays in both promos for The Golden Bachelor and during the final moments of And Just Like That…’s second season. Beyond their shared soundtrack, these shows face a similar challenge when it comes to depicting love after a certain age: How do you retain the freewheeling spirit of Sex and the City or The Bachelor while accurately reflecting the realities of dating as an older person?

During Thursday’s cozy premiere of The Golden Bachelor, which is getting a major marketing push from ABC via retirement-home screenings and senior-inspired discounts, it became clear that this series may have transformed more smoothly than its scripted counterpart. This starts with the slam dunk casting of 72-year-old widower Gerry Turner as the first Golden Bachelor. He’s a retired restaurateur, father, and grandfather who spends his days at a lake house in Indiana that was meant to be shared with his late wife, Toni. Gerry and Toni were high school sweethearts, married for 43 years before she became ill and died suddenly in 2017.

Tears arrive early as Cat Stevens’s “The Wind” plays over photos of Gerry and Toni’s life together. He gazes at a framed photo of his wife while dressing for the evening, putting on his hearing aid before adjusting his tuxedo jacket. Later in the evening, Nancy, a 60-year-old interior designer, will show off her own hearing aids: “I, too, wear a little ear candy.” The start of Gerry’s journey to find love is sentimental, but for the first time in a long time for this franchise, that feeling is earned—a result of our lead’s actual life experiences rather than a cloying device.

A woman shuffles out of the limo and across the driveway using a walker. “Do you need help?” Gerry asks. That’s when Leslie, a 64-year-old fitness instructor, tosses her prop and tears away her muumuu to reveal a strapless minidress. “Do I look like I need help?” quips the woman who in her intro package says she dated Prince and inspired his 1979 hit “Sexy Dancer.”

And so begins a lively series of limo entrances. Sandra, a 75-year-old retired executive assistant, introduces Gerry to her “Zen practice,” which involves repeated chanting of curse words. Faith, a 60-year-old high school teacher, arrives on a motorcycle. “I’m proof you can live fast and not die young,” she says. “If you leave here with me, it will be the ride of your life.” Susan, a 66-year-old wedding officiant, makes note of her stilettos before delivering this dirty disclaimer: “I’m very comfortable with six inches.”

The show can’t resist trotting out a few of its tried-and-true entrance methods. April, a 65-year-old therapist, aligns herself with an animal, doing the chicken dance upon arrival because her “eggs are still fresh.” “Chippy,Jimmy Kimmel’s 84-year-old aunt, shows up for a celebrity cameo, which results in a stale gimmick about sleeping through the rose ceremony (“Can I at least get a petal?” she asks host Jesse Palmer). And Theresa, who is celebrating her 70th birthday, makes the scantily clad limo exit that usually includes a bikini or lingerie. This time, she opens her silk robe to reveal her “birthday suit,” which turns out to be merely a nude-colored slip. Theresa couldn’t have actually gone naked, she explains, on the account of her six grandsons watching at home.

But grandmothers or not, Gerry’s 22 contestants, who range from age 60 to 75, aren’t afraid to get spicy. Natascha, a 60-year-old pro-aging coach who sits cross-legged from Gerry on a yoga mat in the mansion, observes: “Gerry is in good shape. I’m not going to have to resuscitate him if we have an intimate moment.” Later in the evening, Gerry presents Theresa with a birthday cupcake before offering one of the smoother opening lines uttered by a Bachelor in recent memory: “If I were to take a bite of that and then were to have a whole bunch of icing [on my face], would you help clean it up?” Theresa accepts her birthday present, later earnestly admitting in a confessional, “It’s been forever since I kissed a guy, and it was incredible.”

From Pickleball to Granfluencers: How ABC Is Pushing ‘The Golden Bachelor’

    [ad_1]

Ryan’s enthusiasm for the show has been crucial to getting it off the ground too. She joined Disney when it acquired most of 21st Century Fox in 2019 and has been championing the idea of a senior Bachelor since the minute she walked in the door. “There were a lot of great things that came over as part of the Fox acquisition, but one of the best was the people, and at the top of my list is Shannon,” Mills says.

Ryan watched Turner’s casting video early in the process and was completely won over, calling him “so relatable and rootable and charming.” Her team, she says, worked closely with Mills as production got off the ground because “we wanted to be very thoughtful in the marketing of the show to make sure it reflected the tone of what they were making.”

That thoughtfulness comes through in ABC’s early promotional spots. In the clip introducing the grandfather from Indiana to the world, a tongue-in-cheek voice-over celebrates his age: “He posts his thirst traps in a leather-bound album. His DMs have postage. He gets the early bird special anytime he wants. If you call him, he’ll answer the phone. He doesn’t have gray hair, he has ‘wisdom highlights.’ Florida wants to retire and move to him. He’s Gerry.” To introduce the women who will vie for his love, the network released a nearly three-minute video set to Cher’s “Believe.”

The online response to the spots—which have outperformed the marketing for every previous Bachelor installment—suggests that ABC’s calculated risk could pay off. And it’s giving executives hope that even though their marketing is leaning into the golden part of The Golden Bachelor, the show will still have broad appeal. “There’s something very timeless about this love story,” Mills says. “If you were ever going to let your kids watch an installment of The Bachelor, I think this would be the one.”

Ryan is also hoping that fans will gather to watch the show together. “Communitizing is a word that we’re using,” she says. “There’s no better example of that than what we saw this summer with Barbie and Taylor Swift, where people really rallied to come together for a shared experience. While Golden Bachelor is definitely different from those, it does feel like there could be a sort of multigenerational appeal.” That’s why ABC will host viewing parties for retirees in 25 markets, and why it will tap into the phenomenon of pickleball—a sport particularly popular among seniors, including many of the Golden Bachelor contestants—with promotions at official tournaments like the Indoor National Championships in Atlantic City.

Though the marketing budget for The Golden Bachelor isn’t as big as it might be for, say, a new Thursday night drama, Ryan says it fits with her larger strategy of creating individualized campaigns for each show. “The goal is always to try to get people to tune in and watch, but it’s also really to create that emotional connection with our audience,” she says. For a young-leaning, female-led, digital-first show like Hulu’s The Kardashians, that meant hosting an influencer event in Malibu. For Abbott Elementary, ABC focused on highlighting the work of schoolteachers.

ABC won’t know whether the marketing push has paid off until the September 28 premiere of The Golden Bachelor. But Ryan says she already knows it’s working with one key focus group: her mother and mother-in-law, who are both in their 70s. “I showed them both the first promo that revealed Gerry, and my mother-in-law—who’s single and from Indiana—said, ‘Is it too late to try out for this show?’”

In addition to solving its scheduling woes, The Golden Bachelor may be just the refresh the creatively flailing franchise needs. The new series follows the departure of longtime creator Mike Fleiss and is already showing promise, according to Disney’s top unscripted-TV executive, Rob Mills. “It’s such a different way of doing The Bachelor because these people are just at a totally different place in their lives,” he previously told Variety. “There is an interesting thing about people who have hit the other end of the spectrum, who’ve lived their lives, they’ve raised their kids; some have been widowed or divorced, and maybe some have never been in love. We thought that would be an interesting dynamic through the Bachelor prism.”

Who are the contestants on The Golden Bachelor?

At the end of August ABC unveiled the cast photos and bios for all 22 contestants on The Golden Bachelor. They range from age 60 to 75 and share a diverse range of pasts, perspectives, and, apparently, pickleball habits, as showcased in a trailer set to Cher’s “Believe.” And these women boast traits that have never been seen on a Bachelor bio. Take Christina, whose first concert was the Beatles in 1964; Marina, who has three master’s degrees; or Kathy, whose grandchildren call her “Kiki.” There’s even a familiar face in the bunch—Patty, the mother of Matt James, Bachelor Nation’s first Black lead who is still dating his final pick, Rachael Kirkconnell.

The full list of contestants is below:
Anna, 61, a retired nutritionist from Summit, N.J.
April, 65, a therapist from Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Christina, 73, a retired purchasing manager from Sierra Madre, Calif.
Edith, 60, a retired realtor from Downey, Calif.
Ellen, 71, a retired teacher from Delray Beach Fla.
Faith, 60, a high school teacher from Benton City, Wash.

Leslie, 64, a fitness instructor from Minneapolis, Minn.
Maria, 60, a health and wellness director from Teaneck, N.J.
Marina, 60, an educator from Los Angeles, Calif.
Nancy, 60, a retired interior designer from Alexandria, Va.

The list of ladies who will compete for the heart of the first ever Golden Bachelor has been released, giving fans a glimpse of the classy cast before the show begins airing later this month.

These ladies look to be a fun bunch and – thank goodness – an age-appropriate group to date 72-year-old Gerry Turner. The youngest of the group is 60 and the oldest is 75.

This week, ABC dropped a teaser where fans could catch glimpses of some of the women hoping to receive Turner’s final rose.

There’s no shortage of gorgeous greys and laugh lines on these ladies, who all appear to be aging just as well as the show’s first leading man.

ABC has been teasing the possibility of a seniors-only franchise of The Bachelor for more than three years. In 2020 it began soliciting applications from “seniors looking for love,” but it was only this May that it was announced the series would finally come to fruition.

According to his bio, Turner is a retired restaurateur who married his high school sweetheart, Toni, in 1974. Sadly, she died in 2017 after a sudden illness.

“I have her picture on a dresser in my closet…. For a while, it was like I was having a hard time figuring out if she would be OK (with me moving on),” he told Good Morning America last month. “But we always told each other, when one of us goes we’d want the other one to be happy. She’s up there rooting (for me).”

Turner says he’s looking for an energetic partner with whom he can enjoy activities like pickleball and golf.

So, which of these ladies will be lucky enough to receive Turner’s final rose? Let’s meet the cast.

‘The Bachelor’ and Longtime Creator Mike Fleiss Break Up After Rocky Season

    [ad_1]

A new era of The Bachelor is upon us. After more than two decades at the helm of ABC’s reality-dating-show juggernaut, creator Mike Fleiss and his franchise are breaking up. The news arrives a day after the conclusion of Zach Shallcross’s season of The Bachelor, which had an uneven, albeit happy ending

“First and foremost, congratulations are in order for Zach and Kaity [Biggar]. I wish them a long and happy life together. I want to thank WBTV and ABC for 21 extraordinary years. They’ve found the perfect creative team for me to entrust The Bachelor franchise and keep this lightning in a bottle bold and moving forward. Let the journey continue,” Fleiss said in a statement to Deadline. (Vanity Fair has reached out to reps for ABC and Fleiss for additional comment.)

Fleiss is passing the baton to Claire Freeland, showrunner of Canada’s The Bachelor; Jason Ehrlich, showrunner on multiple seasons of the series and its spin-offs; and Bennett Graebner, a veteran executive producer on the franchise. The next season of The Bachelorette, starring Charity Lawson, is currently filming and premieres in June.

Before creating The Bachelor, which debuted in 2002, and The Bachelorette, which followed a year later, Fleiss was a creative mind on reality series including Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? and High School Reunion. “I like to take a topic that someone says, ‘You can’t put that on TV,’ and then I put it on TV,” he told Vanity Fair in 2003. “I want to feel a little bit dangerous, a tiny bit irresponsible probably, and that usually equals controversy, and that’s sort of my stock-in-trade.”

If controversy is what Fleiss sought, then his reputation with the Bachelor franchise was successful. The colorful creator, a second cousin of renowned former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, has weathered his fair share of professional and personal scandal. Over the years, he feuded with the Kardashianshis own talent, and even fellow ABC stalwart Kelly Ripa. After the Live host criticized his series, Fleiss replied with a scorching tweet: “The Bachelor franchise pays your salary.”

When asked about the show’s glaring lack of diversity back in 2011, he told Entertainment Weekly, “We always want to cast for ethnic diversity, it’s just that for whatever reason, they don’t come forward. I wish they would.” During the same interview, Fleiss said of The Bachelor that “the romance space is ours”—a statement that holds far less weight in 2023 as evidenced by the show’s waning ratings and cultural relevance. If anything, Fleiss’s legacy may be the scores of hit reality dating series that now compete against The Bachelor, including Love Is BlindMarried at First Sight, Temptation Island, and Love Island, to name just a few.
