  • Coming Soon: Golden Globes Winners List

    [ad_1]

The 83rd annual Golden Globes are being handed out Sunday night.

Nikki Glaser is returning as host of the show, which will air live from 8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT on CBS and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. (Find out more details on how to stream the show here.)

Glaser recently told The Hollywood Reporter that she watched last year’s show, which she also hosted, for the first time only a few days ago. She said she felt like she had set a high bar for herself for this year’s show. “I kind of nailed it,” she said. “And it scares me, because that was kind of lightning in a bottle. I got really lucky with some of the nominees. Everything worked out. So it’s a high bar. I’m kind of screwed.”

Heading into the show, One Battle After Another leads the nominations. Paul Thomas Anderson’s film scored a total of nine noms, including best picture, director and screenwriter. Sentimental Value landed eight noms, followed by Sinners with seven, Hamnet with six and Frankenstein and Wicked: For Good with five apiece.

In the TV categories, The White Lotus is tops with six noms, followed by Adolescence with five and Only Murders in the Building and Severance with four each.

Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions has lined up a star-studded list of presenters for Sunday’s show. They include Amanda Seyfried, Ana de Armas, Ayo Edebiri, Charli xcx, Chris Pine, Colman Domingo, Connor Storrie, Dakota Fanning, Dave Franco, Diane Lane, George Clooney, Hailee Steinfeld, Hudson Williams, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner, Joe Keery, Judd Apatow, Julia Roberts, Justin Hartley, Kathryn Hahn and Keegan-Michael Key.

Also set to present are Kevin Bacon, Kevin Hart, Kyra Sedgwick, Lalisa Manobal, Luke Grimes, Macaulay Culkin, Marlon Wayans, Melissa McCarthy, Mila Kunis, Miley Cyrus, Minnie Driver, Orlando Bloom, Pamela Anderson, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Sean Hayes, Snoop Dogg, Wanda Sykes, Will Arnett and Zoë Kravitz.

Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment will return as executive producing showrunners for the 2026 Golden Globes. Dick Clark Productions will plan, host and produce event, which has been viewed in more than 185 countries and territories worldwide.

This year, the Golden Globes introduced a new category, for best podcast. The nominees are Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang With Amy Poehler, The Mel Robbins Podcast, SmartLess and NPR’s Up First.

“There are so many podcasts out there, I think it’s really appropriate, actually, to open up that category,” Weiss recently told THR. “People are getting their content and their entertainment in many different forms.”

Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.

THR will be posting the winners as they are announced live Sunday. Check back for all the results in real time.

  • Law Roach Breaks Down His Strategy for Ariana Grande In Awards Season 2026—And Beyond

    [ad_1]

Yeah, I did. I think one of the most iconic looks is the Giambattista Valli at the Grammys [2020], which was kind of the last time [we worked together]. And so for us to come back and it’s just like, wow, bam, we’re back doing this.

How do you choose what happens when or which dress goes where?

For me, the best dress always wins. No matter what it is, no matter who made it, it’s always the best dress that will, for me, always win. I love the goosebumps. And when that happens, that is my drug. It’s like when that dress goes on and you get those goosebumps, you know that that’s the one and that’s the dress and that’s what we’re wearing to this place at this time.

More generally about your career, how now do you approach styling different people for different things? You have Zendaya, you have Ariana. What’s the Law playbook that differentiates them?

Them. I think one of the greatest compliments I’ve always gotten throughout my career is that none of my clients look the same. I believe in never changing anyone, but just aiding them and becoming the best version of themselves when it comes to fashion. And that’s been my goal, to always listen, to pay attention and to make it known that it’s a collaboration. Everything that Ariana’s worn is still very Ariana, and it’s not Zendaya, and it’s not Celine Dion, and it’s not this person or that person. And I’ve always taken a lot of pride in that and it’s a lot of work because every single dress is chosen because there’s something about it that reminds me of the client. And it makes the job harder because a lot of people can just go and just get a lot of clothes, and there’s a lot of people whose clients all look the same. Whether it’s good or bad, it’s just like, oh, you can see that person’s hand in it. And I don’t think that’s fair. I think women are so dynamic and amazing and they need to shine as their individual selves and not become a part of this thing.

This idea of “method dressing,” of dressing an actor in relation to the character and film, is something you, I think, helped define. I think of Zendaya with Challengers, Dune, and Spiderman—those moments are the blueprint for method dressing. What do you make of that becoming so popular?

You know what? I think we’ve always done that. Even back with The Greatest Showman. It’s just recently gotten a name, but again, it’s entertainment, it’s fun. It’s showmanship. It’s more than just picking out a pretty dress. It’s telling the story. Again, it’s the only way I can communicate. And it’s just fucking fun.

Back to Ariana, Glinda, and the color pink. How do you negotiate with having a short brief and playing with it when it comes to dressing someone?

  • ‘The Beauty’ Exclusive: Ashton Kutcher Enters His Villain Era in Ryan Murphy’s Nihilistic New Series

    [ad_1]

The Beauty is based on the eponymous 2015 comic book series by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley. Murphy and series cocreator Matthew Hodgson optioned the rights nearly a decade ago, long before the release of 2024’s similarly themed body-horror film, The Substance—starring Kutcher’s ex-wife, Demi Moore, in a performance that earned the actor her first Oscar nomination. But Kutcher can’t really speak to any similarities between the two projects. When asked about comparisons between the two, Kutcher shies away from his Zoom camera, lowering his voice to a whisper: “I haven’t seen that film,” he says sheepishly.

But he does have another comp in mind for The Beauty. “There was a movie that Bradley Cooper did where a drug made him hyperproductive, Limitless. I read that script, wanted to do it—but they hired Bradley instead. Good choice, he’s great.” His new show has a similar premise. “I love this notion of giving people some superhuman capability that is not 10 steps removed from today, but two steps removed from today. I think that’s always more fun because you’re not in outer space. You can imagine this actually happening.”

It’s a topic Kutcher and his wife, Mila Kunis, had been discussing even before he got the script for The Beauty. “My wife actually said to me, ‘Somebody walks around with braces or Invisalign, and that’s totally fine. But the minute someone gets a rhinoplasty, that’s viewed differently.’ They’re both cosmetic enhancements,” he says. “One’s to your teeth and one’s to your nose. And nobody’s ever going to be judgey about getting braces, or about how your teeth turn out from the braces. But they will for rhinoplasty or lipo or a hair transplant. She and I have had a lot of conversations about this. It depends on what body part it is. That’s a really weird thing.”

  • 2026 Golden Globe Predictions: Who Will Win for Every Category

    [ad_1]

The front-runner for the Oscars is also likely to go home with the prize in this category. It’s notable that two actual musicals were not even nominated here this year, though: Wicked: For Good and The Testament of Ann Lee. The only real competition for One Battle in this category is Marty Supreme, another comedy that is tonally similar to Paul Thomas Anderson’s film. But the overwhelming popularity of the Leo DiCaprio drama should help it bring home the big prize of the night. —John Ross

    Best Director, Motion Picture

PREDICTED WINNER: Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another
    Ryan Coogler, Sinners
    Guillermo del Toro, Frankenstein
Jafar Panahi, It Was Just an Accident
    Joachim Trier, Sentimental Value
    Chloé Zhao, Hamnet

It would be very Globesy (and kind of electrifying, frankly) for a less expected candidate like Ryan Coogler or Jafar Panahi to take this category. But One Battle and PTA feel undeniable—not only because Anderson made the most zeitgeisty movie of the year, but also because his Globe narrative is a lot like his Oscar narrative. That’s right: Paul Thomas Anderson has, somehow, never actually won a Golden Globe. Hell, until Licorice Pizza, he hadn’t even been nominated for one. Especially as Globe voters strive to prove their cinematic bona fides and legitimacy, it seems very unlikely that they’ll pass up the opportunity to reward a more-than-worthy auteur who’s long overdue for this sort of recognition. —Hillary Busis

    Best Actor, Motion Picture, Drama

    Joel Edgerton, Train Dreams
    Oscar Isaac, Frankenstein
    Dwayne Johnson, The Smashing Machine
    Michael B. Jordan, Sinners
PREDICTED WINNER: Wagner Moura, The Secret Agent
Jeremy Allen White, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere

This is a close race between two worthy actors: Michael B. Jordan, for playing twins Smoke and Stack in the blockbuster Sinners, and Wagner Moura, for playing a professor on the run in the Brazilian film The Secret Agent. Will Globe voters do a repeat of last year and reward a Brazilian actor over more popular or widely seen performances? Fernanda Torres’s win for I’m Still Here was a total surprise on Globes night 2025—but now we know just how large a Brazilian contingent there is amongst Globe voters. On the one hand, voters might not want to look like they are repeating themselves by giving another acting award to a Brazilian lead. On the other hand, it’s tough to deny the magnitude of Moura’s performance, which already won him best actor in Cannes. I’m betting on Moura to take this one, but it’s a close race! —J.R.

    Best Actress, Motion Picture, Drama

    PREDICTED WINNER: Jessie Buckley, Hamnet
    Jennifer Lawrence, Die My Love
    Renate Reinsve, Sentimental Value
    Julia Roberts, After the Hunt
    Tessa Thompson, Hedda
    Eva Victor, Sorry, Baby

This category hasn’t matched up with the eventual Oscar winner since 2020, when Renée Zellweger won for Judy. Instead, in recent years, it’s been sort of all over the place. (Nicole Kidman for Being the Ricardos? Really?) Then again, in the past two years, the eventual Oscar winners—Emma Stone for Poor Things and Mikey Madison for Anora—were competing in the comedy-musical category at the Globes. Jessie Buckley has been a very clear Oscar front-runner for her raw performance in Hamnet, so we’re guessing the Globe voters will align with that choice. But there’s always a chance they’ll want to shake things up by instead crowning a first-time nominee like Renate Reinsve or Eva Victor—or maybe giving some love to a movie star like three-time Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence.R.F.

Best Actor, Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

PREDICTED WINNER: Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme
    George Clooney, Jay Kelly
Leonardo DiCaprio, One Battle After Another
    Ethan Hawke, Blue Moon
    Lee Byung-hun, No Other Choice
    Jesse Plemons, Bugonia

  • Rookie Magic: Edgecombe’s Clutch Three Saves the Day in Memphis – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

The No. 3 pick drops 25 and the game-winner

Valdez Drexel Edgecombe Jr. has hit the ground running for the Philadelphia 76ers. The number three overall pick in the 2025 draft seems to only be getting better as the games go on. Already finding himself as every night starter but growing into a focal point in the offense along with becoming one of the Sixers’ most trusted defenders. His impact off the ball has helped the Sixers propel into the 5th seed in the East with a 17-14 record through the end of December. VJ’s blend of explosive athleticism and smart play has been a breath of fresh air for a team dealing with ups and downs, especially injuries to guys like Embiid.

Coming out of Baylor, where he flashed two-way potential, VJ has translated it seamlessly to the pros. He’s averaging 15.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game on 42% shooting. But stats don’t tell the full story – he’s locking down perimeter guards, throwing down wild dunks, and making smart cuts or extra passes that fit perfectly alongside Maxey and Embiid. The kid plays hard every possession, and it’s contagious.

Sixers dust off tough three game skid:

After a rough skid and three-game losing streak that had fans worried, VJ got the Sixers back on track last night against the Memphis Grizzlies. It was a shootout at FedExForum, with Joel Embiid dropping 34 points and 10 boards. But VJ stole the spotlight in overtime. Tied at 136-136, with 1.7 seconds left, he drained a three off an inbound play for a 139-136 win. He finished with 25 points (10-of-21 FG, 5-of-10 from deep), six rebounds, four assists, four steals, and a block in 41 minutes. That dagger wasn’t just clutch – it’s the stuff Philly legends are made of.

    Credit: Petre Thomas-Imagn Images

Postgame, VJ stayed humble, crediting teammates: “My teammates have faith in us to make a play, and that’s what happened” (WSLS). But that grin gave away how big it felt. This isn’t his only highlight – think back to his 22 points while clamping Brunson against the Knicks, or that double-double vs. Boston to end an earlier slump. VJ consistently steps up.

Head coach Nick Nurse on his maturity: “He’s kind of like that all the time… I never see him show much emotion. I think it’s an incredible quality. He just plays the game” (WSLS). Nurse has ramped up his minutes, and it’s paying dividends. VJ’s quiet confidence cuts through the hype.

While Cooper Flagg grabs headlines as the heavy ROY favorite at -600 odds, VJ is climbing with his athletic finishes, clutch shots, defense, and IQ. His odds are around +6000, but performances like last night could change that fast. Others like Kon Knueppel and Derik Queen are in the conversation, but VJ’s all-around impact on a contender sets him apart. His style and passion have Sixers fans buzzing with hope for the future. Playoffs looming – if he keeps this up, Philly could make serious noise. This rookie’s just scratching the surface.

  • Looking back at 2025: Michelin Guide graded Philly’s food scene and weighed in on cheesesteak spots

    [ad_1]

    December 29, 2025

Three city restaurants received one of the most coveted culinary awards, and a handful of others were recognized by reviewers.

Philly’s one-star restaurants can expect more business and recognition from the “Michelin bump,” which could also make it more difficult for customers to book reservations. An analysis from Chef’s Pencil found that for every star a restaurant receives, menu costs increase by an average of $100 per person.

Amanda Shulman, owner of Her Place Supper Club, said this month that her staff has already seen a jump in email inquiries since the November ceremony. Owner and chef of Provenance, Nicholas Bazik, said their waitlist is typically around 50 people long on any given night.

Restaurants can gain or lose stars over time, so the pressure is on for chefs and their staff to maintain their award-winning levels of service, but the owners are welcoming the pressure.

“We keep doing the work every day and that’s all we really want to do,” said Chad Williams, who owns Friday Saturday Sunday with his wife, Hanna. “We’re just happy to get the recognition and it kind of puts a little more fire under us.”

  • How Mothers on the Brink Became the Main Characters of 2025

    [ad_1]

Through his attorney, Alex told People that Fuller and Carr’s series “mischaracterizes Alex’s relationships with his wife Maggie and his son Paul, both of whom Alex loves so dearly.” To that, Fuller tells VF: “I do truly believe, to whatever extent I can understand, that he did love Maggie and Paul. I think that’s one of the reasons he can’t open that door of monstrousness to acknowledge what he did.”

In one final, prescient twist, Alex used a visit to his elderly mother, Libby, then suffering from dementia, as an alibi for the murders. “After the most dehumanizing, monstrous thing someone could do, he went and sat there with his mom,” Fuller says.

Like Alex fleeing from the darkest moments of his life and into the arms of his mother, Fuller ventures that the rocky last few years have led us back there culturally too. “We’ve been through so much in the past 10 years, particularly the past five. The collective psyche has just been so traumatized, and there’s so much uncertainty when we’re dealing with AI, what the economy’s going to look like, climate change—all these massive things,” says Fuller. “We dramatized [Paul’s older brother] Buster Murdaugh saying at the end of his father’s murder trial, ‘I just want my mom.’ There is something fundamental that a mother in the most general way provides. But what we’re seeing, with If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Die My Love, is the burden of that on the individual.”

    Die My LoveMubi/ Everett Collection

In a year where men channeled their inner demons into vampires (Sinners), gods (Superman), and even a new Frankenstein, motherhood served as a trippy catalyst for many writer-directors. “We are thinking about ourselves as mothers, but also our own mothers. If you have a good enough mother, those problems and demands and terrible feelings that we’re putting forth in these movies are all behind the scenes,” says Bronstein. “Those are mommy’s little secrets. Kids go to bed, wine comes out or whatever it is, but we don’t see that as kids. We don’t see all the work that goes into even something as simple as a birthday.”

The unflinching portraits of maternity have had a profound effect on mothers, but also on young people deciding whether or not to procreate. “Women are really openly expressing a total disinterest in marriage and children,” says Gallagher, citing a recent Pew Research Center study that found a 22-point drop over the last three decades in teenage girls’ desire to get married. As of 2025, teenage girls are officially less likely than teenage boys to say they want to get married. “So, it makes sense to me that we’re finally free enough perhaps to explore and say out loud that having kids isn’t for everyone, and/or you can love your kids to death and still acknowledge that the life of having kids is really hard,” she continues.

  • How Choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall Helped Amanda Seyfried Embrace the Holy Spirit

    [ad_1]

If you can remember back to season two of Gossip Girl, you may recall an episode about aspiring designer Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) attempting to earn funding for her eponymous fashion line by staging a guerrilla show at a charity gala. In the middle of the stuffy reception, Jenny commandeers the A/V system, blasting punk rock while a squad of models, clad in her early-aughts emo designs, climb on tables.

Even the most dedicated Gossip Girl superfans may be surprised to learn that two of the models in that scene are The Testament of Ann Lee director Mona Fastvold and her longtime collaborator, Ann Lee choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall. In a stroke of Hollywood luck, the pair met that day, becoming fast friends and launching a creative collaboration that would extend for nearly two decades. The 20-somethings worked together on music videos until their first major project: 2018’s Vox Lux, which was directed by Fastvold’s partner Brady Corbet, based on a story by Corbet and Fastvold, and choreographed by Rowlson-Hall.

But even during the Vox Lux days, Fastvold was dreaming of Mother Ann Lee, the founder of 18th-century religious sect the Shakers. “I remember probably close to a decade ago, her saying, ‘I want to make a film about Ann Lee,’” Rowlson-Hall tells Vanity Fair. It wasn’t until 2023 that Fastvold gave her collaborator an actual script and asked her to join the team. “I said, ‘Absolutely.’ I mean, I was gonna make it anyway. You know what I mean? We’re collaborators for life.”

The most expansive project in their partnership to date, The Testament of Ann Lee interprets the life of Ann Lee, played in the film by Amanda Seyfried, as a musical, transforming old Shaker hymns and their full-bodied worship (or “shaking”) into sequences of choreographed, euphoric dance. With some old images and a couple written accounts as historical guidance, Fastvold’s directive to Rowlson-Hall was simple: Go crazy.

As it happens, Rowlson-Hall grew up in a family that subscribed to another intense religion: Christian Science. That sect, she notes, was also founded by a woman. “I wanted to be Jesus when I was a little girl,” she says. Being chosen for Ann Lee felt like divine intervention: “It was just tapping into my entire youth and existence, and that prayer and that desire to have a connection to God.”

  • Kevin O’Leary Was Proud to Play a “Real Asshole” in ‘Marty Supreme’

    [ad_1]

“We’re looking for a real asshole, and you’re it.” That’s how director Josh Safdie tried to convince Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank fame to play an intense ink-pen tycoon in Safdie’s 1950s-set sports dramedy Marty Supreme. O’Leary, the entrepreneur and investor known as “Mr. Wonderful,” was unfazed. He had heard the same thing 17 years earlier, when Mark Burnett’s production company recruited him for the American version of a Japanese reality TV show.

“I say this asshole thing’s starting to work for me,” O’Leary jokes about making his acting debut opposite Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow. “I am not an asshole. I just tell the truth, and some people don’t like it. I think maybe I’m going to become the honorary chairman of all assholes everywhere after this. And it’s a job I’m happy to take.”

Marty Supreme is filled with dynamic visuals, 1980s synth-pop needle drops, and other arresting non-actors, including Isaac Mizrahi, Abel Ferrara, and John Catsimatidis. But O’Leary steals most of his scenes as Milton Rockwell, a no-nonsense New York multimillionaire in a loveless marriage to trophy wife Kay Stone (Paltrow), a former Hollywood star. Chalamet’s pushy Lower East Side ping-pong prodigy Marty Mauser—who is still living with his Jewish hypochondriac mother (Fran Drescher), schtupping his married ex-girlfriend (Odessa A’Zion), and grifting with his pal (Tyler Okonma, a.k.a. Tyler, The Creator)—sees the patrician couple as a means to realizing his dream of becoming the world tennis-table champion.

Milton is taken with Marty’s talent, but he’s no easy mark. Marty’s a hustler with chutzpah; when talking about an opponent who’s a Holocaust survivor, he boasts to a journalist, “I’m gonna do to Kletzski what Auschwitz couldn’t.” Yet Milton tells Marty that he can “smell bullshit from a mile away.” The CEO wants Marty to throw a series of company-sponsored exhibition matches against his deft rival, Koto Endo (Koto Kawaguchi, the real-life winner of the Japanese National Deaf Table Tennis Championships), in Japan. But the ambitious competitor just can’t agree to the deal.

“What I love about this film is it’s a chronicle of the birth of the American dream right after the optimism of the Second World War,” O’Leary tells me. “Yes, it’s got a crazy, kinetic roller-coaster [energy]. But Marty’s like every Shark Tank hustler.”

  • The Oscars Will Air on YouTube

    [ad_1]

In another sign of the changing TV world, the Oscars will leave their longtime broadcast home on ABC in favor of YouTube.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced via press release that the annual Oscars telecast will air on YouTube starting in 2029. ABC will continue to air the show for the next three years. The Academy’s contract with YouTube runs through the 105th Academy Awards in 2033.

According to the release “the partnership also will include worldwide access for film fans to other Academy events and programs exclusively on the Oscars YouTube channel. This will include the Governors Awards, the Oscars Nominations Announcement, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, the Student Academy Awards, the Scientific and Technical Awards, Academy member and filmmaker interviews, film education programs, podcasts, and more.”

READ MORE: The Biggest Oscar Scandals Ever

Here was Acadmy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor’s statement on the news:

We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming. The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community. This collaboration will leverage YouTube’s vast reach and infuse the Oscars and other Academy programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honoring our legacy. We will be able to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers and provide access to our film history on an unprecedented global scale.

The new deal comes with questions that have not been answered yet. Like: Will there still be commercials during the show? Will the Oscars adhere to their typical three hour runtime? Or given that there is no set time slot on YouTube and they could air for as long as the site and the Academy want, will they go longer?

Will the Academy reinstate the awards, like the Honorary Oscars, that have been removed from the broadcast in recent years in order to shorten the show? Will there be other changes? Will they try to update the Oscar broadcast to appeal to YouTube’s younger audience? Will MrBeast present Best Picture?

I guess we’ll have to wait and see. But 2029 will certainly mark a major milestone in the world of films and award shows.

  • ‘Train Dreams’ Composer Bryce Dessner Talks Working With “Hero” Nick Cave on the Film’s Theme Song

    [ad_1]

When director Clint Bentley tasked longtime collaborator Bryce Dessner with writing the score for Train Dreams, the story of an early 20th century logger watching the world change around him, it was only natural that Dessner go to the woods, too.

“I wanted to get away from my computer,” Dessner says. “A lot of film scoring is done in front of a picture. Often with scores you see for big movies like a Marvel film or something, there’s a lot of advanced technology. This was the opposite.”

For about a week, Dessner, a fan of the Denis Johnson novel on which the film is based, holed up at Flora Recording & Playback in Portland, Oregon, the same studio his band, The National, has worked out of. There, he recorded with no shortage of vintage gear, from upright pianos and harmoniums to old acoustic guitars and ribbon microphones, within its shiplap wood walls. Those old sounds were mixed with more contemporary synths, which helped capture Dessner’s score that, like the film, is often devastating, at times almost whimsical, but always beautiful.

“Clint had the idea that he wanted on some level for the music to reflect the time and place but also not necessarily be a period film,” says Dessner. “He was open to exploring more modern textures, too, which is what I ended up doing. There are a lot of analog sounds in the film to capture that feel, but then there are synthesizers and some processed electronics, too.”

When asked about the biggest challenge of writing the score, Dessner focuses on “the big sense of loss at the heart of this story.

“There’s a real beating heart to Robert Grainier’s character [Joel Edgerton], a lot of empathy for his losses. The music had to balance between reaching the depth of that without overwhelming the film,” he explains. “I had to find a tone that was between light and dark. It was a challenge to find those moments of levity and lightness and playfulness while also allowing the bigger things to bloom.”

Dessner threaded the needle well, reflecting the deep, wordless contemplation Grainier often displays on his face, as well as his warmth.

“The story is so deeply human, and it’s what we all experience at some point in our lives — love and loss,” Dessner adds of the Netflix movie. “What is the trajectory of a life as a series of memories, dreams or landscapes? The film is very poetic, and music accesses that in a really poetic way as well.”

Dessner also worked with Nick Cave to write the film’s eponymous theme song that plays during the end credits just after the film’s soaring, climactic finish. Citing Cave’s “literary” songwriting style, he says the rock musician was “at the top” of his and Bentley’s lists. Cave and Dessner collaborated remotely while Cave was touring, with Dessner sending music he’d written for the score and Cave, who Dessner says is also a fan of the novel, writing lyrics over the tracks.

“He’s someone who can put all these feelings into words — he does it so beautifully,” Dessner says, specifically lauding Cave’s lyric, “I can’t begin to tell you how this feels,” which he says nails the sentiment of the film. “The restraint of the film — there’s not a huge amount of dialogue, there’s a lot of space for him to come in at the end, and he says a lot in those three or four minutes.”

Dessner describes Cave as a hero to both him and his band, calling the collaboration — the first time they’ve worked together — a career highlight. “He’s a really respectful and humble and elegant collaborator,” Dessner says of Cave. “He was very open. A lot of times good songs can just happen. Sometimes it takes eight months to make a great thing, sometimes it’s overnight. This one happened pretty quickly.”

  • Oscars: Academy Reveals Full Lists of Qualifying Documentary, International and Animated Features

    [ad_1]

A total of 201 documentary features, 86 international features and 35 animated features are eligible for Oscar recognition this season in the best documentary feature, best international feature and best animated feature categories, respectively, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday.

The only time more documentaries were deemed eligible — 238 — was the year in which the pandemic led to an extension of the period of eligibility from 12 to 14 months (Jan. 1, 2020 to Feb. 28, 2021) and docs that did not play in theaters were considered.

This year’s list of eligible documentary features includes titles that have dominated at the doc community’s precursor awards, including Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor and Apocalypse in the Tropics, Apple’s Come See Me in the Good Light and Neon’s Orwell: 2+2=5. It also includes two acclaimed films made by celebrities about their famous parents, HBO’s My Mom Jayne and Apple’s Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, which were directed by Mariska Hargitay and Ben Stiller, respectively. And there are several titles related to recent turmoil in the Middle East, including Hemdale/Metallux’s Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets and the self-distributed Coexistence, My Ass!, Holding Liat and Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk.

The most glaring omission from the list: The Eyes of Ghana, a documentary directed by the two-time Oscar-winning documentarian Ben Proudfoot, which is still seeking distribution. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that a late decision was made to hold the film for next awards season. Other high-profile docs that were expected to be on the list but are not, either because they were not submitted or because they failed to meet the eligibility requirements, include A24’s Marc by Sofia, Oscar winner Sofia Coppola’s portrait of Marc Jacobs, and Oscar winner Questlove’s Hulu film Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius).

The list of eligible international features includes five widely lauded films that are being distributed in the U.S. by Parasite backer Neon and could conceivably all earn nominations: Norway’s Sentimental Value, Brazil’s The Secret Agent, South Korea’s No Other Choice, Spain’s Sirāt and France’s It Was Just an Accident. It Was Just an Accident, which won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, was directed by Jafar Panahi, a filmmaker from Iran but does not reflect well on the country; as a result, Iran submitted the much lower-profile Cause of Death: Unknown, while France submitted It Was Just an Accident, on the basis that much of the film’s financing was French.

Other countries that made interesting submissions include Japan (GKIDS’ Kokuho, a film about Kabuki performers, which is now the highest-grossing non-animated film in that country’s history); Iraq (Sony Classics’ The President’s Cake won two prizes at Cannes); Belgium (Music Box’s Young Mothers could bring the brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne the first Oscar noms of their distinguished careers); and Taiwan (Netflix’s Left-Handed Girl, which was co-written by Anora Oscar winner Sean Baker).

Meanwhile, at least three countries submitted acclaimed documentaries for best international feature consideration: Ukraine (PBS’ 2000 Meters to Andriivka, a doc about a Ukrainian platoon’s fight to retake a city from Russian invaders, which was directed by Mstyslav Chernov, who won the best doc feature Oscar two years ago); North Macdeonia (Nat Geo’s The Tale of Silyan, from Tamara Kotevska, whose 2019 film Honeyland was nominated for best international feature and doc feature Oscars); and Denmark (Mr. Nobody Against, a film about Vladimir Putin’s propaganda efforts, which is still seeking U.S. distribution).

And the list of animated features includes giant blockbusters like Crunchyroll’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which is now the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time and the highest-grossing international film in the U.S. of all time, as well as the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2025; streaming hits like Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, which is now that streamer’s most watched film ever; acclaimed indies like Neon’s Arco, a French-language critics’ darling that counts Natalie Portman among its producers; and highly-anticipated forthcoming titles like Disney’s Zootopia 2.

Among the animated films that were expected to contend but are not on the list of eligible titles, either because they were not submitted or because they failed to meet the eligibility requirements, are A24’s Ne Zha 2, Sony’s Paddington in Peru and Paramount’s Smurfs.

The documentary feature and international feature categories are winnowed down to shortlists before nominations, while the animated feature category goes straight to nominations. Shortlist voting will span Dec. 8-12, 2025, and the announcement of the shortlists will come on Dec. 16. Nominations voting in all categories will span Jan. 12-16, 2026, and the announcement of the nominations will come on Jan. 22, 2026.

Thirty-five features are eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 98th Academy Awards. • Michael B. Jordan Can Count Tom Cruise as a Fan: “I Admire Your Talent”

    [ad_1]

Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue cover star Michael B. Jordan was the man of the hour at Thursday’s 39th annual American Cinematheque Awards. The actor, producer, and director received the night’s main honor, joining a group of past recipients that includes Martin Scorsese, Denzel Washington, and Julia Roberts. The ceremony also recognized Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association, with the Power of Cinema Award, presented by NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley.

The night was organized around different moments in Jordan’s career, each represented by a different celebrity friend. Ben Affleck, Mahershala Ali, Octavia Spencer, Tessa Thompson, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Kaluuya, and Delroy Lindo all made speeches.

Naturally, Jordan’s longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler presented him with his actual award at the end of the night. But not before a surprise video from Tom Cruise played for the audience. “I’ve been watching your career grow over these many years,” Cruise told Jordan. “I admire your talent, your dedication, your constant willingness to learn and push the boundaries of storytelling. Most recently, with Sinners, you gave another outstanding performance. Well, actually, you gave two outstanding performances.” Coogler joked afterward that he was not prepared to follow Cruise, but would do his best.

Coogler has worked with Jordan since making his feature directorial debut with 2013’s Fruitvale Station. The filmmaker spoke about their deep connection and collaboration over the years, which began when Coogler cast him in the film. He told a story about meeting Jordan at a Starbucks across the street from Forest Whitaker’s production office and thinking to himself, “I don’t think he knows how big he is…. He’s a movie star in the making.” Later in his conversation with Jordan, Coogler told his future collaborator, “‘I think you’re a star. Let’s do this project together and show the world.’ And this dude looked back at me like it was the first time somebody told him that.” Jordan yelled back from the audience, “It was!” The rest was history, with the duo working together on the Creed series, Black Panther, and then Sinners.

Jordan got emotional throughout the night, especially during Coogler’s presentation. “Everybody talks about chasing dreams,” Jordan said. “Nobody really talks about how to build. What does it actually mean to build? How do you will the thought into existence? I stand on the shoulders of giants and my ancestors.” Jordan thanked his family, especially his mother, whom he called the artist of his family and who sat next to him at the event. “We said our stories deserve to be told, and people overwhelmingly responded,” Jordan said of his collaborations with Coogler. “Kids saw themselves on screens in ways they hadn’t. And that was the whole point.”
