Enterprise Florida recognizes Jacksonville company for job creation and fueling innovation across Florida.

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 16, 2022

Enterprise Florida presented Urban SDK with the EFI Entrepreneur and Job Growth Award during its most recent Board of Directors meeting in Tallahassee. The Jacksonville-based data analytics and visualization company was recognized for its commitment to job growth within the state, as well as its work showcasing Florida as a global leader in innovation.

“This is a proud moment for our company,” said CEO and Co-founder Drew Messer. “We started Urban SDK to do 2 things: help the government transform itself through a modern data management strategy and prove we can build a $100M dollar tech startup out of Jacksonville, Florida. This award further validates our vision.”

Urban SDK was started in 2018 by Messer and COO and Co-founder Justin Dennis. In 2021, the company expanded internationally and tripled its valuation in under 12 months. For 2022, the company forecasts 300% growth, which Dennis believes is due to the company’s best-in-class technology meeting a strong demand in the market.

“Our modern data management system optimizes business decisions and operations through data, and the impact is no clearer than within Florida,” said Dennis. “In Jacksonville, we’re the data management system for the country’s first autonomous public transportation vehicles. Meanwhile, in Tampa Bay and Central Florida we’ve established regional contracts between counties and DOT Districts that give leaders an ability to plan regionally instead of county by county.”

The EFI Entrepreneur and Job Growth Award comes on the heels of Urban SDK closing its Seed Series, which was led by the Florida Opportunity Fund (FOF), Florida-based venture capital firms DeepWork Capital and venVelo, and TechStars.

“Urban SDK and its founders are changing the way we look at the world and embody the purpose and power of investment by the Florida Opportunity Fund,” said Florida Opportunity Fund Executive Director Meredith Pelton. “The Fund proudly supports Urban SDK’s dynamic financial success, team expansion, and state and community investment as Florida continues to fuel innovation.”

“We’re honored to be in the FOF portfolio,” said Messer. “We’re a home-grown Florida business with the state as a majority shareholder. We employ 21 Florida residents with high paying jobs, and we’re building a platform that helps our government innovate at the highest levels. This investment into Urban SDK is evidence that EFI is making Florida the premiere business destination in the world.”

The UK-based World Book of Records, which ratifies special world records achieved by individuals and organizations, has announced that it recognizes Global Schools Foundation (GSF) as the World’s Most Awarded Network of Schools

The announcement comes fresh on the heels of another stupendous GSF achievement of crossing a milestone of 250 national and international excellence awards from various international Quality Organisations.

“This effectively means, in terms of education excellence, GSF schools have been recognized as one of the best in the world,” said Mr Rajeev Katyal, Dy COO of GSF. “It is a valuable validation of all the best practices we have introduced in education, to reinforce essential benefits for all stakeholders.”

GSF schools took inspiration from some of the world’s leading organizations, and adopted Education Excellence as a daily mantra, to benefit thousands of students across its 23 campuses in eight countries. All the awards by the school were achieved for streamlining academic processes, introducing newer systems, workflows, and best practices for students’ benefit.

  • Comfort Cases Founder Rob Scheer Honored With Babineaux Award for Foster Care

Comfort Cases Founder Rob Scheer Honored With Babineaux Award for Foster Care

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 26, 2019

National Council For Adoption is proud to present the 2019 Warren and Mary Alice Babineaux Award to Rob Scheer in recognition of his continued commitment to creating positive change in the lives of children in foster care who need permanent families.

As a child, Rob Scheer was placed in foster care and arrived at a house full of strangers with a beaten and torn trash bag filled with his belongings. He described his transition into foster care as a form of mental abuse: the feeling that you are not wanted or loved. When he became 18, he “aged out” of the system, left homeless. Statistically, Rob should have struggled with drug abuse, dropped out of school, or become incarcerated, but instead, he chose to dedicate himself to a purpose by becoming an advocate for children and youth in foster care.

When Rob and Reece Scheer welcomed four children into their home through foster care, each one arrived with a torn trash bag. Rob was shocked and saddened that so little had changed over the years, which inspired him to create a better option for thousands of children. Comfort Cases are bags and backpacks that contain the essentials for children in foster care. Each case has both hygiene kits (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.) and age-specific comfort items, such as books, journals, and blankets. Rob’s goal is to help children in foster care feel safe and comforted through uncomfortable and oftentimes scary transitions.

Since its founding in 2013, Comfort Cases have reached 39 states in the U.S. Over 40,000 youths have received a care package from Rob’s organization. In 2017 alone, 11,219 Comfort Cases were delivered to children of all ages—from babies to teenagers—giving them a small gift of love and helping preserve their dignity as they enter a new foster home. His next goal is to provide support for higher education for those who are aging out of care.

Rob recently published A Forever Family: Fostering Change One Child at a Time in November 2018. It is a memoir of his childhood and the discrimination he and his husband would later face when adopting their children. With frequent speaking engagements, his story has inspired millions. He has appeared on Upworthy, with over 130 million views on his viral video, as well as on the Today ShowThe Ellen Show, and more.

“Comfort Cases’ motto is #NoMoreTrashBags and they are truly committed to making that goal a reality,” says NCFA president and CEO, Chuck Johnson. “In just five years, it is incredible to see the impact that Rob and his team have had—including the outpouring of compassion from thousands of volunteers and Comfort Cases Ambassadors across the country who pack bags and deliver them in their communities. Rob serves as an example that everyone can do something to help children in foster care, whether it’s the life-changing commitment of adopting a child or something as seemingly small as donating blankets and bags. NCFA is proud to honor Rob’s work with the 2019 Babineaux Award and we look forward to watching Comfort Cases grow to serve more children and youth in foster care in the years to come.”

    About Foster Care

According to the most recent report from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are currently 442,995 children in U.S. foster care. Of these children, 123,437 are waiting to be adopted. The number of waiting children has reached a nine-year high, with a 13% increase in parental drug abuse cases playing a major role in this increase. Nearly 20,000 youth aged out of foster care this year and will navigate adulthood without the financial, educational, social, and psychological support they need to thrive. This is a national tragedy that must be addressed, as the outcomes for foster youth who age out of care are bleak. With no stable support system, these young adults are at high risk of homelessness, substance abuse, pregnancy, and incarceration.

About The Warren and Mary Alice Babineaux Award

Established in 2015, the Warren and Mary Alice Babineaux Award honors individuals and organizations that have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure children experience the love and stability that come with a forever family. This award is given to those who have demonstrated the most selfless commitment to providing resources, education, and leadership to address the many challenges including parent recruitment, training, and support services necessary to give children safe, stable, and loving adoptive families. The Warren and Mary Alice Babineaux Award acknowledges the dedicated efforts of those who have generously given their time, talents, and resources to ensure that all children can “come home” to a loving, forever family. The award is named for Adoption Hall of Fame recipients Warren and Mary Alice Babineaux who cared for more than 100 children in foster care during their decades-long tenure as foster and adoptive parents in Louisiana.

    Awardees include:

    • 2015: Governor John Kasich of Ohio and Governor John Hickenlooper of Colorado
    • 2016: Former foster youth Sixto Cancel and Nicole Marchman
    • 2017: NBC4 Washington’s Barbara Harrison and Mississippi’s Executive Director of the Division of Family and Children’s Services Dr. David Chandler
    • 2018: Lifelong adoption advocate Joe Kroll
    • 2019: Country music artist Jimmy Wayne and author and co-founder of Comfort Cases Rob Scheer

UNWIND HOTEL & BAR will take over a historic building and local symbol to deliver an emotionally charged experience to its guests

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 5, 2019

Japanese real-estate developer Global Agents has just announced the second location of its luxury lifestyle hotel brand “UNWIND HOTEL & BAR” with a grand opening set for late-March 2019. The first location in the series opened in early 2017 in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and won numerous awards in addition to being ranked the No. 1 hotel in all of Sapporo. Global Agents is now bringing the UNWIND HOTEL & BAR brand to the culturally rich city of Otaru, one of Hokkaido’s leading tourist destinations. The Japanese developer decided to revamp the former Etchuya Hotel, a local symbol and historical building constructed in 1931 that was the very first hotel dedicated to serving foreigners in Hokkaido after World War I. Global Agents has committed to preserving the hotel’s heritage and original facade while also giving the long-time vacant property a full interior renovation and offering guests a truly unique and refined experience. The hotel will also offer brand-new facilities and services such as a stylish bar and a banquet hall that doubles as a restaurant with a lively “Happy Hour” featuring endless free wine.

The first things guests will experience at UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU is the unique architectural design and aesthetic. The building was originally designed by Kuniharu Karasawa and was listed in British travel guides as early as the late 1800s. The former Etchuya building was a symbol of Otaru’s status as a port-hub for international trade with an annex that exclusively served foreigners. The view from the facade and its perpendicular fenestrations are a major feature of the building with two rows of bay windows surrounded by circular windows on either side. The influence of post-World War I Art Deco design on Karasawa is also seen in his liberal use of stained glass throughout the interior. The classic exterior and newly renovated interior will allow guests to experience a unique mix of historical classic and modern design during their stay. As the guest passes through the entrance to the lobby, they are greeted by a gorgeous chandelier and rustic fireplace giving them the feeling of entering a completely different world.

The former ballroom of the building has been transformed into “THE BALL,” a unique dining experience where guests can enjoy seasonal ingredients and local cuisine in a stylish setting. The ballroom also doubles as a banquet space that can be used for large events and weddings. The combination of the unique location and historic design will provide guests with a truly original wedding experience. After dinner, guests can move to “BAR IGNIS,” a stylish bar designed with guest interaction in mind that features an unlimited free wine happy hour held every day from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Additionally, the hotel will offer a modern take on English-style Afternoon Tea by serving it as a complimentary breakfast.

UNWIND HOTEL & BAR OTARU is the latest hotel from Japanese developer Global Agents. CEO Takeshi Yamasaki notes that “preserving the historical aspect of the building and the area surrounding was a huge challenge but integral to the conception of this hotel. The building’s rich history gives us the chance to offer guests a unique experience that can transcend a typical stay.” Tourism in the Otaru area has been dramatically increasing over the past few years and with the pending opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen “Shin-Otaru Station,” the demand for new accommodations has never been higher. Global Agents has seen great success in the Tokyo rental market with Social Apartment, their brand of co-living spaces, and the company already has plans to open six new hotels throughout Japan this year, as well as their first international hotel in Taipei (Taiwan), currently scheduled to open Summer 2019.

The Best Quiet Hotel in the World 2017: Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Dec 20, 2017

On 20 December, the coveted Quiet Hotel Award will be presented for the 3rd time. The winner has been selected from the over 157 European hotels that have acquired the Quiet Room® label. This year’s winner is the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre, a 4-star hotel in possession of 408 QR-qualified rooms.

As always, the participating hotels have been meticulously reviewed by the Quietroom Foundation, which oversees the quality and sets the standards for the QR-label. Selection criteria include things like hotel location, number of QR-qualified rooms, design & build measures for sound insulation, and client reviews on social media.

The 2017 winner of the award is located on the river IJ, close to Amsterdam’s historic centre and just 20 minutes from Schiphol Airport. It was renovated in 2013 and in 2017 the  Mövenpick had all its rooms certified for the Quiet Room® label. 31 rooms have qualified for the highest Quietroom category, the remainder for the second category.

According to Lucas Keizer of the Quietroom Foundation, ‘the excellent performance of the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre with regard to sound insulation is partly due to the use of QR-certified products and manufacturers, which guarantees that renovation and insulation measures meet the highest possible standards.’

The Science Platform Capeia Introduces a Novel Scoring Algorithm for Monitoring the Impact of Articles

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 25, 2017

The newly launched science platform Capeia not only seeks to stimulate discussion but is also committed to spreading the information and ideas that are expressed on this website into the depths of the World Wide Web. So much so that it provides an extra crowdfunding scheme to collect funds with which to provide a reward on a monthly basis for the scientist whose contribution attracts the most attention.

For accurately determining an article’s attention, Capeia has conceived an algorithm that not only covers conventional parameters such as views and shares but also measures whether an article is read entirely or dropped halfway through. Furthermore, significant weight is put onto whether visitors’ comments or inquiries are addressed by the author in due time. Capeia, therefore, does not define impact merely through the response an article draws by the community but explicitly observes the attention it gets by its author following publication.

Rüdiger Schweigreiter, Editor: “Capeia does not support a ‘Fire and Forget’ publishing policy. Impact is not a one-way street. We do not limit the definition of impact to the attention an article receives from the audience but extend it to the post-publication attention it gets from its author. Taking into account both the audience and the author for metric analysis lives up to Capeia’s mission to strengthening the relationship between scientists and the interested public.”

Capeia is proud to put this scoring algorithm into use with an article on exoplanets by SETI scientist Franck Marchis. In this essay, Dr. Marchis expounds the state of the art of exoplanet detection and outlines future technological possibilities. A simulation, which is shown here for the first time, illustrates what exoplanets might look like when viewed through the next generation of telescopes that are currently under construction.
