  • Florida woman shot and killed both of her ex-husbands on the same day, police say

A Florida woman was arrested and charged with murder for killing two of her ex-husbands on the same day. One shooting happened shortly before 3 p.m. Dec. 17, in the 7000 block of Chatum Light Run. Deputies with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find the 54-year-old victim with two gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died about five hours later. Before his death, he told deputies that an individual, possibly his ex-wife, came to his door and shot him after he answered. Their 15-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting. According to authorities, Susan Erica Avalon, 51, of Citrus County, was later identified as a person of interest. Authorities arrived at her home on Dec. 18 to find her wiping her vehicle with cleaning rags and bleach. After letting Avalon know they were there to speak about her ex-husband, she asked, “Which one?” At that point, they began looking into the welfare of her second ex-husband, who lived in Tampa. The MCSO’s Homicide Investigative Unit requested help from the Tampa Police Department, and he was found dead inside his home in the 1200 block of East Frierson Avenue. He had multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities believe Avalon went to Tampa first to kill her second ex-husband, then traveled to Manatee County to shoot her first ex-husband. The 54-year-old’s name is being withheld due to Marcy’s Law. The Tampa victim’s name has not been released. Detectives have not disclosed a motive at this time.

  • Shore Animal Control says it picked up an injured seagull in Avalon after reports of a kid throwing a baseball at it

Shore Animal Control says it picked up an injured seagull in Avalon after reports of a kid throwing a baseball at it

Shore Animal Control was called to pick up a seagull on the Jersey Shore that was reportedly injured by a “kid throwing a baseball at it” in front of the ICONA hotel in Avalon, the Upper Township-based company said Sunday.

The bird had a broken wing, according to the Facebook post, and authorities are searching for witnesses.

Shore Animal Control also posted a screenshot of an alleged text message in which a person claims a boy lured the seagull with food and then “purposely” threw a baseball at its wing two times.

The animal services company said Avalon police “will not investigate” unless a witness comes forward. Anyone with information can call Shore Animal Control at 1-800-351-1822 and Avalon police at 609-967-3411.

Several seagull species are native to New Jersey. They are not considered endangered in the state, but they are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, making it illegal to harm them. This hasn’t stopped violence against the birds in recent years.

In July, Franklin Ziegler, of Cape May, allegedly killed a seagull in North Wildwood by decapitating it, authorities said. Ziegler, 29, was charged with animal cruelty. In 2017, Philadelphia firefighter Edward Frost, allegedly killed a seagull on the Sea Isle City beach by throwing an object at it. He faced disorderly persons charges, and eventually pled guilty and had to pay a $250 fine. Also during the summer of 2017, a man in Ocean City allegedly caused a seagull’s death by striking it with a beach umbrella pole. The scene was caught on video, but it’s unclear whether authorities ever caught the man.

Street Lines: 2023 Toyota Crown Limited

When Toyota’s Avalon was introduced as the carmaker’s largest new sedan back in 2004, it was revered for its luxury, size, and value. After personal experience due to my family owning one, it lasted a memorable 230,000 miles with virtually no issues. After almost two decades, this model was discontinued largely due to the popularity of SUVs, but a Toyota sedan comparable to the Avalon called the Crown has arrived in 2023 with an impressive debut. Owners will appreciate its attractive exterior, amenities, a smooth ride, higher seating platform, and stellar fuel economy thanks to the hybrid powertrain. The Crown comes in three trims—XLE, the reviewed Limited, and high-end Platinum.

Presented in a prominent “Supersonic Red” premium paint, it complements the sedan’s other sporty physical elements, including the contrasting black grille; large, 21-inch, 10-spoked alloy wheels coming in two tones (19-inch is standard); “quad” LED daytime running lights package; rear LED lights extending fully across the rear; and panoramic roof. Overall, Toyota has made a head turner in the sedan market, for sure.

The XLE and Limited come with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine teaming with three electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Although the performance won’t have drivers white knuckling topping out at 236 horsepower, the gas stations will see less visits with a combined 41 miles to the gallon. (For more power, the Platinum boasts a Hybrid Max system, including a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder heart, pushing out 340 horses, which will hopefully be featured in Street Lines soon.)
