    Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for its 38,000-square-foot Automotive Technology Training Center on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.

    The college and the Suffolk Community College Foundation have entered into a naming agreement with Empire Automotive Group, a Long Island–based company recognized for its commitment to workforce development and community engagement. Financial terms of the naming agreement were not disclosed.

    With the new facility, the college will expand its automotive program capacity with the goal of strengthening Long Island’s pipeline of skilled automotive technicians.

    “The college and our foundation are delighted to partner with Empire Automotive Group in order to advance and enhance our automotive technology training program,” Edward Bonahue, SCCC president, said in a news release about the groundbreaking. “Today, we join with our student body and over 145,000 alumni to extend our gratitude and sincere thanks to Michael Brown, president and CEO of Empire Automotive Group, for this generous naming gift.”

    Brown said in the news release that “the future of automotive technology depends on highly skilled technicians. We’re proud to partner with the college to help create a workforce that will drive Long Island’s automotive industry forward.”

    The facility will feature advanced classrooms, training labs, workshops and simulation areas outfitted with the latest vehicles, diagnostic equipment, and hybrid and electric vehicle technology. Students will receive instruction from industry professionals and gain hands-on experience with modern automotive systems.

    More than 100  elected officials, industry partners and community members attended the event, showing support for the program’s expansion and oppportunities for graduates.

    SCCC will continue its existing automotive program on the Ammerman Campus in Selden, with both facilities providing training opportunities. The college’s programs are accredited by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation, preparing students for employment in dealerships, franchise shops and independent repair facilities.

This special recognition program will honor the most accomplished graduates of WyoTech, showcasing their achievements and contributions to the automotive industry. Hall of Fame inductees will be honored at a ceremony at the WyoTech Laramie campus on June 2, 2023, and will continue into June 3 in conjunction with the school’s annual car show.

    The WyoTech Hall of Fame will feature inductees who have significantly impacted their fields, including successful business owners, industry innovators, and standout technicians. These individuals will be chosen for their dedication to their craft and commitment to excellence, representing the best and brightest of WyoTech’s alumni.

    To be eligible for the WyoTech Hall of Fame, nominees:

    • Must be a graduate of any WyoTech campus.
    • Must be established in their career, with at least five years of work post-graduation.

    A total of six members will be inducted into the first Hall of Fame class, whose names will be announced in April 2023. This event will serve as a celebration of WyoTech’s proud history and the achievements of its graduates and will be an inspiration for current and future students to strive for excellence in their careers.

    This will also be an opportunity for these alumni to give back to WyoTech by participating in the following-

    • Volunteer as a WyoTech Graduation Speaker.
    • Volunteer as a guest teacher for a lesson or workshop for current students.
    • Volunteer as a guest teacher for a lesson or workshop for WyoTech’s Summer Seminar.

    WyoTech, a leading U.S. automotive, diesel, and collision trade school, seeks new instructors, following the construction of a new $16 million, 90,000-square-foot expansion to its Laramie, Wyoming, campus. Completed in November of 2022, the expansion allows the school to increase its capacity to 1,200 students. 

    Between 2018 and 2021, enrollment at WyoTech increased by 2,300%, prompting the need for additional space. The school’s current student enrollment is 850 students.

    With this expansion, WyoTech is seeking new instructors to join its team and help provide the highest quality education to its students. The school is looking for automotive, diesel, and collision professionals passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of technicians.

    Instructors will not just be spending time lecturing, but will also get to spend time in the shop getting their hands dirty along with the students. They get the reward of seeing the students’ eyes light up when they finally understand their passion and have the satisfaction of helping the students’ dreams become a reality.
