  • Tesla granted more time in US investigation into its self-driving tech

    U.S. regulators have granted a five-week extension for Tesla to respond to allegations that its vehicles have broken traffic laws while operating in what the electric automaker calls “full self-driving” mode.

    An investigation of Tesla’s full-self driving feature was opened in October after the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration said it had collected dozens of reports of the cars running red lights or driving on the wrong side of the road, sometimes crashing into other vehicles and causing injuries.

    The investigation covered 2.9 million vehicles, essentially all Teslas equipped with full self-driving technology, or FSD. Critics say the name is a misnomer that has lulled drivers into handing full control over to their cars. The federal agency responsible for auto safety said in a letter to Tesla on Dec. 3, 2025 that it was investigating 62 complaints, up from 58 reported incidents in October.

    Tesla, headed by billionaire CEO Elon Musk, has argued to regulators and in court cases that it has repeatedly told drivers the system cannot drive the cars by itself and whoever is behind the wheel must be ready to intervene at all times. Regulators say that many Tesla drivers involved accidents said the cars gave them no warning before behaving erratically.

    In a letter to the electric vehicle maker, the NHTSA said Thursday that the company now has until Feb. 23 to answer the government’s request for information. The original deadline was Jan. 19, 2025.

    Tesla lost its crown as the world’s bestselling electric vehicle maker last year for a combination of reasons, including a backlash to Elon Musk’s right-wing politics, expiring U.S. tax breaks for buyers and stiff competition at home and abroad that has pushed sales down for a second straight year.

    Tesla reported earlier this month that it delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, down 9% from a year earlier. Chinese rival BYD, which sold 2.26 million vehicles last year, is now the world’s biggest EV maker.

    The FSD system under investigation is what is called Level 2 driver-assistance software that requires drivers to pay full attention to the road. A new version of FSD was introduced in the fall. The company is also testing a vastly upgraded version that does not require driver intervention, something that Musk has been promising to roll out for years.

    Tesla is under pressure to show success with FSD because the main part of its business — selling cars — is struggling.

    Still, investors are betting that Tesla and Musk can deliver on their ambitions to make Tesla a leader in robotaxi services and get consumers to embrace humanoid robots that can perform basic tasks in homes and offices. Reflecting that optimism, Tesla’s stock finished 2025 with a gain of approximately 11%.

    Tesla shares were essentially unchanged in midday trading Friday, going for about $439 each.

  • The Corvette E-Ray Is Dynamically Up There With the Best

    A 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery has been packaged within the car’s already beefy central tunnel, and additional cooling has been added to manage battery temperature. There’s also new software to harmonize all the components.

    The hybrid adds 160 bhp for a total system power output of 645 bhp, which is almost identical to the amount produced by the thunderous ZO6. On top of that, the more overtly aero-oriented comp-inspired car also donates its wide-body look, the previously optional carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, and the tires epically chunky: 275/30ZR-20s at the front, 345/25ZR-21s at the rear.     Riotous Design

    We’re not sure the car’s visuals are quite equal to the ambition being exercised elsewhere, though. The Corvette’s design trajectory since its 1953 launch is instructive of American automotive design overall, the ’60s C2 Sting Ray and ’80s C4 iterations culturally relative high-points. The latest car is an incoherent riot of competing angles and edges, undeniably dramatic and a crowd-pleaser to judge by the reaction it generates during WIRED’s drive. But still no oil painting.

    It’s unrepentantly expressive inside, too. It’s easy to get in and out of, the doors opening wide, the seats more luxurious in feel and amply cushioned compared to its more minimalist rivals. The steering wheel is one of those fashionably square items, its spars oddly downcast. But the driving position is good, the view ahead helped by fairly slender A pillars. A rear-view camera mirror helps ease reversing anxiety, usually a tricky thing in a mid-engined car.

    Multi-configurable instrument dials lie straight ahead, there’s a crisp Head-Up Display, and an angled touchscreen handles the infotainment. Then there’s that swooping central tunnel, the leading edge of which houses the switchgear that operates the climate control and various other functions. Fearing total ergonomic catastrophe, it’s a surprise to discover that it all actually works well in practice.

    Electric Stealth

    Given that the Corvette’s V-8 is totemic, the E-Ray’s principal hybrid party trick is its “stealth” mode, which does what it says: enables the car to exit your street under near-silent electric-only propulsion. Its range in this mode is barely a few miles, but still, this is briefly an electric, front-drive Corvette. What a novelty.

    Credit where it’s due, former Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn—the man who was later smuggled out of Japan in a double bass case—was quick to identify electrification as the key paradigm shift in the 21st-century car industry. Cue the cute Renault Zoe, forward-thinking in terms of design and propulsion, but perhaps too aloof to capture hearts and minds.

    The new Renault 5 EV is unashamedly nostalgic in look, mining a design trend that’s been around so long that retro is almost retro. Yet when you see it in the flesh for the first time resistance is futile. Here, surely, is the electric car that will demolish any lingering preconceptions, a surprisingly sophisticated conduit for all-round feel-good vibes that’s packed with big-car tech.

    Current Renault boss Luca de Meo is certainly bullish. “Some products are magical,” he notes. “You don’t have to hold endless discussions, everybody is always in agreement on what needs to be done. And they do it. There’s no inertia.”

    As one of the masterminds of the noughties Fiat 500 revival, De Meo has solid instincts on this stuff. Even if you’d never driven one, you knew what the classic Cinquecento stood for. The same applies to the Renault 5: It arrived into an early ’70s world in which the Middle East was in convulsions, energy was suddenly scarce, and conspicuous consumption was unfashionable. Context matters, and this one has a distressingly familiar feel.

    Design Winks

    The new R5 aims to brighten your day via its candy colors, and an exterior and interior design that prompts an expertly executed Proustian rush. The silhouette might be familiar, but the new car has fuller proportions and imaginative postmodern touches galore.

    There’s a cheeky little four-corner graphic in the headlights that “winks” as you approach. The fog-lights below mimic that motif, while the vertical taillights are another echo of the original. They’re now designed for a degree of aerodynamic efficiency that would have boggled the minds of Renault’s engineers back in the day.

    The chunky wheel arches call to mind the mid-engined R5 rally car, and the new car’s roof can be had in a variety of treatments. It’s a five-door car but the rear door handles are cleverly hidden away. And the old car’s hood vent reappears here as a state-of-charge indicator. Each strip represents 20 percent of the available energy.

    Unlike in most three-row SUVs, sitting at the back of the Buzz was a comfortable experience for my 6-foot-3 body. We also piled four WIRED colleagues into the van for a long loop around the neighborhood, and everyone had plenty of room.

    With all the seats in use, the cargo space behind the third row is 18.6 cubic feet. That’s enough for a large grocery haul or several peoples’ luggage. The third row of seats can be folded down to make a flat surface in the back, and VW offers an insert for the rear cargo area that comes with two handy drawers. If you need more space, the third row can be removed entirely.

    To help keep items from sliding around, the Buzz is equipped with velcro partitions that are stored in the walls of the cargo area. The center console is removable and moveable. You can move it from between the front seats to the second row in vehicles equipped with captain’s chairs. Or just pull it out entirely. One nice touch: The dividers in the center console double as a bottle opener and an ice scraper.

    Meanwhile, VW has gone full USB-C. Every seat gets at least one charging port. There are seven ports in total. There’s also one 15-watt USB port near the rearview mirror to accommodate a dash cam. A 110-volt, 150-watt power outlet is available under the passenger seat.

    This all before you get into the world of aftermarket add-ons, where you are sure to find a plethora of options for the Buzz. It’s all very clever, and a reminder that the VW bus is a canvas for your lifestyle.

    Finally, the issues that have famously been plaguing VW’s infotainment system for years have been solved. The 12.9-inch display was easy to use, navigate, and more importantly, had little in the way of latency. VW has added ChatGPT integration for the voice assistant, but that requires a network connection, and I wasn’t able to fully test it, since most of the drive was in areas where cell service was spotty or absent. When I was able to test it, it returned a solid answer in a timely fashion.

    Weirdly though, as an adventure vehicle, the Buzz does not ship with a dog or camping mode. When asked about this, Volkswagen said it was looking into it. More than a few journalists inquired about these features, which are found in Rivians and Teslas and make all sorts of sense for the Buzz. So don’t be surprised if those modes show up in an OTA software update.

    How Much Again?

    Which brings us to the second sticking point of the ID Buzz. The RWD Pro S model starts at $59,995, and this is because Volkswagen essentially offers a mid-level trim as the entry-level model. For example, this starting configuration ships with 12-way adjustable heated and vented front seats with a massage feature. Heated seats are also standard for the second row. It has three-zone climate controls.

    All those USB ports are also standard. So is that 110V outlet. For those late night raves, a 30-color ambient lighting feature is standard.

    Volkswagen is building all its ID Buzzes at a single factory in Hanover, Germany. This means US buyers cannot claim an EV purchase tax credit, since the Inflation Reduction Act requires vehicles to be assembled in North America to qualify for the tax break. If the automaker offers a lease, then the van does become eligible.

    Volkswagen is aware this is a niche vehicle. While the buzz around the Buzz has died down, it will still likely sell out in its first year. VW would not comment on whether it will offer a cheaper trim option in the future or whether it plans to expand its production to the US.

    Yet even with its lack of a true entry-level price and a range that, while underreported, is less than anticipated, the ID Buzz is exactly what it should be. It is a fun-to-drive nostalgia machine with enough storage and utility to make it a solid weekend hauler for families who enjoy an active lifestyle. And your five children will be quite comfortable in the back as you bore them to tears with your Summer of Love playlist.

    And the W1 needs one to do its best work. Even in a world in which the new breed of electric hypercar has rewired expectations, this is a phenomenally rapid machine. The W1 can accelerate to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds, 124 mph in 5.8, and 186 mph in “less than 12.7 seconds.” That makes it faster than the highly streamlined Speedtail, and the W1 is also three seconds per lap faster round McLaren’s reference test track—at Italian proving ground Nardo—than the aggressively aerodynamic Senna. Its top speed is an electronically limited 217 mph.

    Powertrain options in Race mode include a GP setting for consistency on longer runs, or Sprint for all 1,258 bhp. Bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS rubber is standard fitment, 265/35 at the front, 335/30 at the rear (there are also less extreme R and Winter 2 Pirellis.)

    The steering is also fully hydraulic, a key McLaren USP while virtually everyone else adopts a fully electric setup. The brakes use the McLaren Carbon Ceramic-Racing+ setup, with 390-millimeter discs front and rear, and six-piston calipers on the front, and four-piston ones on the rear. There are F1-style ducts and aero wheel appendages to optimize cooling. The W1 can come to a halt from 124 mph in 100 meters.

    InnoKnit Interior

    Inside, the fixed seats and raised footwell give the W1 the feel of a well-bred competition car. The pedals, flat-bottomed steering wheel and primary controls adjust to meet the driver. The W1 has the narrowest A-pillars on any McLaren, slender sun visors, and a rear-view camera to atone for the lack of over-the-shoulder visibility.

    The wheel now has two buttons—one for a Boost function, the other to tweak the aero—but is still less busy than a Ferrari’s wheel. As on the McLaren Artura and 750 S, the chassis and powertrain modes can be adjusted via rocker switches on the top of the instrument binnacle. The binnacle itself has been shaped aerodynamically.

    There’s a central hi-res touchscreen, as on other McLarens, although in the W1 such considerations are surely secondary. There’s a modest amount of stowage space behind the seats. McLaren is also pioneering an interior trim called InnoKnit, an ultra-lightweight sustainable material that can be tailored in multiple colors, and integrates audio and ambient lighting. Its Special Operations division is ready and waiting to personalize the car.

    To which end the W1’s £2 million cost ($2.6 million) is merely the starting point. It’s academic anyway, because production is limited to 399 cars, all of which are spoken for. McLaren Automotive has had a turbulent few years, but the W1 is a once-in-a-generation techno marvel.

    According to a New American Study, 54% of Gen Z agree that many well-paying, stable jobs are available for a person with only a high school diploma or GED. The study showed 56% of Gen Z agree it’s easier to find a well-paying, stable career with some technical education without a certificate or degree, and 88% agree it’s easier with a technical certificate. This information, coupled with the cost of public university, supports that there is good reason families are considering trade programs.

    WyoTech’s president, Kyle Morris, discusses the right education for the benefit of our kids and future workforce. “Having a clear understanding of career outcomes and goals for college-going students is important as the cost of education continues to rise. If being a doctor, dentist or psychologist is your career path, university is a good path. If working with your hands and building infrastructure is of interest, there is a great opportunity for decades to come in the trades. It’s critical to have an upcoming generation who is willing to take on trade jobs as the previous generation retires.”

    As reported to the ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges) in 2023, WyoTech graduated 804 students, presenting an 85% graduation rate – a significant increase from the 77% graduation rate reported in 2018. According to the same report, 458 students were hired in the industry as reported in 2023, a 77% employment placement rate (rates are calculated based on students eligible for hire, not the amount who graduated). WyoTech hosts its largest class this fall, bringing the student population to an all-time high since 2018. High graduation and employment placement rates show the significant opportunity ahead for the “toolbelt generation,” as schools like WyoTech continue highlighting an alternative path to career training in America.

    Faurecia Aptoide Automotive auf der droidcon 2024

    Ich war auf der Entwicklerkonferenz droidcon 2024 in Berlin und zu Besuch bei Faurecia Aptoide Automotive, dem führenden Markt für Automobil-Apps.

    Wem Faurecia Aptoide Automotive (FAA) nichts sagt, das Unternehmen gehört zu Forvia, einem der größten Automobiltechnologiezulieferer der Welt. Was Forvia so macht, das konnte ich mir ja bereits letztes Jahr auf der IAA 2023 in München genauer anschauen. Die Unternehmensfelder sind dabei breit gefächert, so geht es vom Infotainment über spezielle Sensoren bis hin zu Materialen für die Sitze und Oberflächen.

    An seinem Messestand zeigt das Unternehmen seinen Markt für Automobil-Apps. Man arbeitet hier mit 18 Automobilmarken zusammen und verfügt über ein Portfolio von rund 200 Apps. Zwar bietet das Unternehmen hier sehr individualisierte Lösungen für die einzelnen Marken an, durch eine Standardisierung des übergeordneten Systems und der Apps steht das System aber der gesamten Fahrzeugindustrie zur Verfügung und kann dadurch ideal skaliert werden.

    Auf dem Messestand waren auch zwei Demofahrzeuge ausgestellt und hier im BMW X2 können wir uns einmal den Marktplatz in Aktion anschauen. So haben wir hier den ConnectedDrive Store. Zu Beginn sehen wir hier erst einmal die einzelnen Themenbereiche wie Travel & Local, Entertainment, Music & Audio, News & Magazines und natürlich Gaming. Dort befinden sich dann die jeweiligen Apps. Wie man es auch von seinen App-Märkten auf dem Smartphone kennt, gibt es hier dann zu jeder App auch eine kurze Beschreibung und Bilder und wir können sie auf Wunsch herunterladen und installieren.

    Wie man sehen kann sind hier auch bekannte und beliebte Apps vorhanden, man muss also auch im Auto nicht auf die Tagesschau, Amazon Music, Spotify und co. verzichten. Und was natürlich sehr wichtig ist sind die Games und in meinem Video können wir auch mal sehen wie performant das System ist, denn das Rennspiel läuft hier wunderbar flüssig, hat kaum Ladezeiten und macht einfach nur Spaß. Besitzer eines Elektrofahrzeugs werden sich besonders darüber freuen, denn so vergeht die Zeit an der Ladesäule wie im Flug, ich könnte hier auch noch eine Weile sitzen und das Game zocken.

    Im Mercedes gibt es dann auch noch eine Besonderheit und zwar kann man hier dank der eingebauten Kamera auch im Auto einen Zoom-Call starten und sein Meeting im Auto abhalten.

    Wie bereits erwähnt bietet FAA hier einen White-Label-App-Store, der aber vollständig durch den OEM angepasst werden kann. Dabei übernimmt FAA auch die Inhaltsvalidierung im Auftrag der OEMs, einschließlich der Cybersicherheit.

    Alle Apps sind natürlich für die Benutzung im Auto optimiert und ablenkende Apps wie Streaming-Apps und Games können natürlich während der Fahrt nicht bedient werden. Diese nutzt man dann einfach stationär, beispielsweise wenn man gerade an der Ladesäule steht.

    Ziel des Unternehmen ist es erheblich zur Zukunft der vernetzten Autos beizutragen und neue Standards für die Automobilindustrie zu setzen. Man will hier bis 2025 einen Marktanteil von 20% und bis 2030 von 35% im Geschäftsfeld der Automobil-Apps erreichen. Auf Entwicklermessen wie der droidcon in Berlin kommt man dabei ins Gespräch mit Softwareunternehmen und Entwicklern um dieses Ziel voranzutreiben.

    WyoTech, a leading automotive, collision/refinishing, diesel, and welding trade school, recently celebrated its second annual Hall of Fame event. The event, a closed, intimate ceremony, took place in coordination with the WyoTech Annual Car Show.

    Offering hands-on training since its founding in 1966, WyoTech has graduated nearly 60,000 alumni. In 2023, the school launched its Hall of Fame initiative to recognize these graduates based on their leadership skills, philanthropy, character, and experience.

    Phillip Cato: 

    Phillip Cato joined the United States Air Force after graduating high school, working in vehicle maintenance.  Upon returning home after his time in the service, he attended WyoTech and eventually worked his way to opening an upholstery shop. 

    Travis and Tyler Groth:

    Travis and Tyler Groth attended WyoTech in 2003, and after working in the diesel industry for a few years, decided to start their own Monster Truck team brand, Mirror Image Racing.

    Rick Crook:

    Rick Crook worked in a local body shop for a few years after high school and years later attended WyoTech for professional training so he could open his own business. Afterwards, he worked in a large collision shop, until he had the opportunity to purchase his own shop.

    John Hurd: 

    John Hurd attended WyoTech in 1990, and after working in both the construction and auto body worlds for a couple of years, John began teaching at WyoTech in 1992. After 17 years, he then moved to the construction industry and eventually became a store manager for RDO Equipment Co.

    Lon Phillips:

    Lon Phillips’ early years were marked by a fascination with mechanics and engineering. After WyoTech, he worked for many years in the diesel industry. He seized the opportunity to start a Diesel Equipment Technology Program from scratch at Lanier Technical College in May 2019. 

    Ian Vance:

    Building cars was a dream Ian Vance had as a little boy. He decided to attend WyoTech to become a skilled professional in the automotive field. He now uses the skills and knowledge he learned from WyoTech daily in his own “Rods and Fab” shop. 

    Richard Wood: 

    Richard Wood graduated from WyoTech in 1982 and went on to open his own shop, Custom Car Crafters (CCC). It grew to be one of the largest body shops in Texas. After 40 years, Richard decided to sell CCC and downsize to a small custom shop, which he is still running today.
