Bright Eyes have been slowly reissuing their albums as part of a “Companion” series, beginning with their first three LPs in February 2022 and continuing with three more in August 2022. Now, Bright Eyes have revealed the next full-lengths getting this treatment: 2006’s Noise Floor (Rarities: 1998-2005), 2007’s Cassadaga, and 2011’s The People’s Key are due out in updated forms on June 16 via Dead Oceans.
In staying true with the series’ theme, each album is accompanied by a new “companion” EP where the band rerecorded five songs from the original album with new musicians, as well as a cover song. Conor Oberst was joined by longtime Bright Eyes members Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott, in addition to Gillian Welch, Alynda Segarra of Hurray For The Riff Raff, Johanna and Klara Söderberg of First Aid Kit, and more. “It’s been an interesting journey revisiting and reimagining all of these old songs. 54 songs total seems ridiculous now looking back, but I’m glad we did it,” said Oberst in a statement. “I hope all of the fun and neo-nostalgia we experienced recording these comes through to the listeners.”
This week, Bright Eyes embark on a short North American tour. It kicks off in Milwaukee on May 10 and finds the band performing in Minneapolis, Chicago, Tulsa, Little Rock, Houston, and more cities before concluding the run at Corona Capital Guadalajara in Mexico on May 21.
The most recent and 10th studio album by Bright Eyes, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, came out in 2020. The year prior, Conor Oberst teamed up with Phoebe Bridgers for their collaborative album as Better Oblivion Community Center.

Sharon Van Etten has covered the Ink Spots classic “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire”—and it features a spoken word verse from The Sopranos and The White Lotus actor Michael Imperioli. The song was recorded for the new National Geographic limited series A Small Light, which features Este Haim as executive music producer. Van Etten and Imperioli’s cover will appear in the show’s third episode. Check it out below.
A Small Light is based on the life story of Miep Gies (played by Bel Powley), a Dutch woman of Austrian descent who helped hide Anne Frank and her family in her Amsterdam attic. Este Haim enlisted a number of artists for A Small Light: Songs From the Limited Series, which arrives May 23. The soundtrack includes covers by Angel Olsen, Danielle Haim, Kamasi Washington, Weyes Blood, Moses Sumney, and others. On May 19, composer Ariel Marx will release her original score for A Small Light.
Last week, two songs from the show hit streaming services: Danielle Haim’s version of Doris Day’s “Till We Meet Again” and Kamasi Washington’s rendition of Charlie Parker’s “Cheryl.” Just today, Angel Olsen released her cover of “My Reverie.”

Daniel Lopatin has shared some new music the wrote for a Star Wars-affiliated project. The producer scored “The Pit,” a short in the Disney+ animated anthology Star Wars: Visions Vol. 2. The release coincides with May the Fourth, designated as Star Wars Day. Check out Lopatin’s score for “The Pit” below.
Last year, year, Lopatin contributed “The Viewing Suite” to the soundtrack to Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix. His most recent feature-length score was for 2019’s Uncut Gems, and last issued an album as Oneohtrix Point Never in 2020.

New York punk veterans Bush Tetras have announced their first studio album in 11 years: They Live in My Head arrives July 28 via Wharf Cat. The record was produced by Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, who also played drums on the record. (The group’s original drummer, Dee Pop, died in 2021.) Bush Tetras originally formed as the trio of Pat Place, Cynthia Sley, and Dee Pop in 1979. They reformed in the late 2010s and released a new EP titled Take the Fall in 2018, marking their first collection of new music in over a decade. Then, in 2021, they issued a career-spanning box set called Rhythm and Paranoia: The Best of Bush Tetras.
Around the release of the box set, Bush Tetras began writing another full-length album over Zoom. When Dee Pop died in the fall of 2021, they pressed on to complete the project in his memory. “We just went into the rehearsal space and things just would fall right into place,” Place said in a press release. “We’d just start playing and the next thing would happen and we’d know where to take it.”
Sley added: “We thought a lot about memories from 1979 in New York City. It’s a reflection of growing up together, what we were eating, what we were doing, weird little things people probably won’t get. But that’s cool.”

The Weeknd and Mike Dean have joined forces on a handful of new songs, which appear on Dean’s new album 4:23. The Weeknd sings and has co-writing credits on “Artificial Intelligence, “Defame Moi,” “More Coke!!,” and “Emotionless.” He also picks up an executive producer credit across the LP. Abel Tesfaye and the producer have worked together closely on multiple occasions. They most recently collaborated on “Double Fantasy,” the new Future-featuring lead single for the forthcoming HBO series The Idol. Tesfaye stars in the series, and he co-created it alongside Reza Fahim and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson.
The production has faced some criticism from crew members, who claimed that much of the original material created under director Amy Seimetz had been heavily re-worked at Levinson’s direction. Dean also appears in the show, which premieres on June 4.

Say Anything have shared a new single, the first track from the band in four years. The song is titled “Psyche!,” and bandleader Max Bemis shared a lengthy statement about its development. “For the first time since our first record, probably, the irony behind the concept comes full circle and becomes utterly sincere because this neurotic, cheesy, and excitable heartfelt music is what I needed to survive the hardest time of my life,” he wrote. “Psyche!” is the first new material from Say Anything since they released Oliver Appropriate in 2019. Bemis announced that the band were effectively “retiring.” “Say Anything will probably make music again, and I’m not claiming this is our actual last record, but it may be. Who knows,” he shared in a statement at the time. After wrapping up a handful of dates in New York, Say Anything are slated to perform a few more shows in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, plus a stop at Bamboozle in Atlantic City, New Jersey, later this year.

Roku Inc. shares moved 2% higher in Wednesday’s after-hours action as the streaming-media company cited continued ad-market pressures but topped expectations for its latest quarter.
The company reported a first-quarter net loss of $193.6 million, or $1.38 a share, compared with a loss of $26.3 million, or 19 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter. Analysts tracked by FactSet were expecting a $1.47 loss per share.

BTS’ Suga has released D-Day, which is billed as his first official solo album under his Agust D moniker. The new album includes a collaboration with the late Ryuichi Sakamoto and Woosung (of the South Korean rock band the Rose). According to a press release, D-Day is the third part of the Agust D trilogy, following a 2016 self-titled mixtape and 2020’s D-2. The new album also features Suga’s BTS bandmate J-Hope on a track titled “Huh?!”

Killer Mike has announced Michael, his first solo album since 2012’s R.A.P. Music. It’s out June 16. While the tracklist has yet to be revealed, it features the new single “Don’t Let the Devil.” Mike is joined on the track by his Run the Jewels partner El-P, who also co-produced the song with No I.D. and Little Shalimar. Celine Dion has released “Love Again,” the first of five new songs that she has contributed to a forthcoming movie of the same name. Dion stars in the film alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas—who describes Love Again as an “ode to Celine”—and Sam Heughan. Listen to the track below.

“Love Again” is Dion’s first release since 2019’s Courage. She said at the time that she was working with a sports medicine therapist to rebuild her strength, but the syndrome is thought to be incurable.

A new album will compile nine previously unreleased Arthur Russell tracks. (Yes, there are even more.) The record, Picture of Bunny Rabbit, is out June 23 via Audika, and you can listen to the lead track below. Like the rest of the record, “The Boy With a Smile” was recorded in 1985 or 1986 at Battery Sound in New York, with additional material recorded in his East Village apartment. It was previously available as a live recording.
Picture of Bunny Rabbit comprises tracks from completed masters found on two test pressings, one provided by Russell’s mother and sister, according to the record’s Bandcamp description. The title track was written for a friend’s pet rabbit.
Russell’s music has been extensively collected and reissued since his death in 1992, at which time he had released just one solo album, World of Echo. Many of his posthumous albums have become retrospective classics. The latest to comprise significant unreleased material was 2019’s Iowa Dream.

Dinner Party—the supergroup made up of Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, and Robert Glasper—have announced their second album together. It’s titled Enigmatic Society, and it’s out next Friday, April 14. Phoelix, Ant Clemons, and Tank all make guest appearances on the album. Clairo has shared a new one-off charity single titled “For Now.” She released the song on her Bandcamp page yesterday (April 1), writing that all proceeds from the track will go toward For the Gworls and Everytown for Gun Safety. Listen to “For Now” below.
For the Gworls is a Black, trans-led collective that curates parties to raise funds, which go toward Black transgender people who need assistance with rent, gender-affirming surgeries, doctor’s visits, travel assistance, and more. Oklahoma City’s Chat Pile have announced a new split EP with Kansas City’s Nerver. The four-song release is called Brothers in Christ, and it comes out April 14 (via Reptilian/The Ghost Is Clear). The first offering from the EP is Chat Pile’s “Cut,” which vocalist Raygun Busch said was inspired by Stephen King. Hear it below.
“‘Cut’ is an homage to the short fiction of King,” Busch explained, “particularly ‘The Man Who Loved Flowers,’ ‘Strawberry Spring,’ and ‘The Jaunt.’”
Chat Pile bassist Stin added, “These tracks were written and recorded after we tracked God’s Country.” He continued, “We wanted to use this release as a deliberate excuse to switch gears and fully lean into our more indie and alt-rock tendencies. Slint, Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices, and Starfish’s Stellar Sonic Solutions were certainly on our minds at the time.”

A little more than three months after its initial announcement, Lana Del Rey has released her new album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. The singer-songwriter previewed her LP with the title track, “A&W,” and “The Grants.” Contributors to the new album include Jack Antonoff (who worked with Del Rey on 2019’s Norman Fucking Rockwell!), Father John Misty, Jon Batiste, and producers Drew Erickson and Zach Dawes, among others. Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd is Lana Del Rey’s first album since 2021 when she released Chemtrails Over the Country Club and Blue Banisters. Since issuing the latter record, she shared the Euphoria song “Watercolor Eyes” and joined Father John Misty for an updated edition of “Buddy’s Rendezvous.”
Earlier this fall, Del Rey told fans in a series of since-deleted videos that multiple hard drives had been stolen from her car, resulting in the leak of a few unfinished tracks. She claimed that the manuscript for a book she was working on was also lost. “I had to remotely wipe the computer that had my 200-page book for Simon & Schuster, which I didn’t have backed up on a cloud,” she said at the time. She also asked fans to not listen to any of the leaked music.
In 2020, Del Rey published a collection of poetry titled Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass, which she also released in an audiobook format. Upon announcing the project, she told fans that half of proceeds would benefit Native American organizations around the country, “whether it was for preserving their rights or trying to help keep their land intact.”
