    Bright Eyes have shared a new cover of the John Prine song “Christmas in Prison.” Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Nate Walcott’s new rendition features a sample of Prine’s “A John Prine Christmas.”

    Proceeds from the song will benefit for the late Prine’s charity, the Hello in There Foundation and its 2023 beneficiaries: the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, Porters Call, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, and Renewal House. They’re also selling a Bright Eyes and John Prine holiday ornament to benefit the foundation.

    “It is strange to get a chance to share a track with a hero of mine who has passed on,” Oberst said in a statement. “Normally not something I would do. I don’t like holograms. But I have so much love and affection for John as a person and his music. He really changed my life on a lot of levels. When I heard the sample of him talking about Christmas just put such a big smile on my face and I couldn’t help but want to share it with other people. A little Christmas gift to a stranger. It’s all about John and his beautiful song. But I am happy to sing in the choir. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone all around the world. I wish love and light this season to you and yours.”

    It’s already a big year for Beyoncé, who set a new record as the artist with the most Grammy wins of all time. She took home the awards this year for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album, Best Dance/Electronic Recording, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song.

    Prior to the album’s release, she only shared one single: “Break My Soul.” None of the album’s tracks were accompanied by music videos, though she did tap Kendrick Lamar for a remix of “America Has a Problem.”

    Back in May, she kicked off the Renaissance World Tour—her first tour since 2018—with a massive stage setup that includes a flying disco horse and mechanical robot arms. In addition to the extensive crew that made this tour possible, Beyoncé also included her daughter Blue Ivy in choreographed dance parts at select shows, and invited Arca to open her Barcelona concert with a surprise DJ set.

    beat expectations, sending shares of the streaming and entertainment giant on its best percentage gain in nearly a year, and Roku Inc.

    also offered an upbeat outlook.

    This week — as Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. all report results — we’ll get a deeper sense of whether the entertainment industry is starting to make investors happy again, even if they make viewers less happy in the process.

    Those companies will report as the streaming industry, under pressure from investors to turn a better profit, consolidates and as platforms charge more to watch and cram more advertisements into shows and films.

    Cable TV providers and movie theaters, too, are trying to figure out a way forward as streaming becomes more prevalent. Even as Hollywood’s writers come back to work following a strike that shut down production, its actors are still striking, with issues surrounding AI usage to portray actors, streaming payments and other issues in the balance.

Meanwhile, activist investor Nelson Peltz has been angling for seats on Disney’s board, and its fight with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continues.

    Sales at the theater chains have been lifted in recent months by “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” While both were original films, analysts have said the avalanche of sequels and remakes in theaters is unlikely to stop.

    The pressure to boost profits will ultimately affect what TV shows and films get made, and what viewers actually consume. And a report from FactSet on Friday found that investors have been more unkind than usual to companies whose results come up short of Wall Street’s expectations.

    That report found that through the third-quarter earnings season, companies whose earnings miss expectations have seen an average stock-price drop of 5.2% during the two days before the publication of the results through the two days after. If that figure holds, it would be the stock market’s biggest adverse reaction to an earnings miss since the second quarter of 2011.

Analysts also seem likely to zero on in those companies’ high-margin digital-ad businesses, as more e-commerce platforms try to turn their apps and websites into online billboard space.

    Kelela has announced a new remix counterpart to her second album, February’s Raven. Karen Nyame KG’s remix of “Contact” arrives as the first preview of Rave:N, the Remixes with a video short directed by Yasser Abubeker. She had tried to decline the honor, telling fans, “I don’t feel that I have earned that right.” She later reversed her decision. The album features a long list of guests, among them Sheryl Crow, Mick Fleetwood, Sting, and several more. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited to join Parton on “Let It Be,” with “What’s Up?,” “Magic Man,” among the other singles to preview the LP.

    Toronto natives BadBadNotGood and Charlotte Day Wilson have reunited for a new single called “Sleeper.” Wilson and the instrumental group first played the song live during a performance at London festival All Points East back in August. They reconvened at Los Angeles’ Valentine Recording Studios to track “Sleeper” on analog tape. Check out the new song below (via XL).

    “‘Sleeper’ wrote itself,” Wilson said of the new track in press materials. “We were in the studio just messing around and the guys came up with the colorful instrumental while I freestyled the lyrics. The song portrays someone who chooses the path of least resistance and finds themselves in a lifeless, loveless relationship.”

    Wilson and BadBadNotGood first collaborated on the 2016 track “In Your Eyes,” which appears on BadBadNotGood’s fourth studio album, IV. In 2021, the group played on “I Can Only Whisper” from Wilson’s debut LP, Alpha. They have also teamed up during multiple live performances in recent years, including a 2017 “Tiny Desk Concert” for NPR.

    LALAL.AI, a cross-platform AI-powered stem splitting tool, presents Orion, the algorithm that delivers a leap forward in audio separation technology, boasting capabilities in extracting vocals from a mix in a much cleaner and faster way than all existing solutions. 

    Unlike other stem splitting AI tools, Orion hallucinates the vocals and directly synthesizes them, not relying on a spectral mask that can’t deliver anything more than in the original track, which is a breakthrough approach to audio separation. It means the new algorithm doesn’t just extract vocals from a source, it assumes what a vocal stem is before mixing, and, if it’s not entirely suitable for extraction, recreates the vocal stem. 

    The peculiarities of the Orion algorithm are as follows: 

    • Orion significantly reduces the phasing effect and distortion in the extracted stems compared to the older generations of the LALAL.AI algorithms. 
    • The results split by Orion are 70% cleaner from various artifacts.
    • Orion preserves all tonal characteristics of a vocal stem. 
    • Orion can accurately extract unison singing and echoes. 

    “We spent 20 times more training data on Orion than we did on Phoenix, our previous solution. Besides, in addition to all the differences from our former algorithms quality-wise, Orion is twice as fast as Phoenix, meaning that users will get the split results much quicker, especially in batch processing,” says Lead Engineer Nikolay Pogorskiy. 

    To evaluate the separation quality, the LALAL.AI engineers use signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR), indicating how many artifacts the separation process introduces to the vocal and instrumental parts. The difference between Orion and Phoenix is 2.5 dB, which is a huge leap in quality in comparison to the SDR differences between the previous algorithms

    Sound producers, DJs, musicians, and other creatives can now test Orion, as well as compare it with the previous algorithm on the LALAL.AI website. The new solution can currently be used for the extraction of vocals, instrumental backtracks, and noise cancellation. More instruments, such as acoustic and electric guitars, drums, bass, piano, synthesizer, strings, and winds can be processed by Orion in the upcoming releases.

    The Libertines are back with their first album in over eight years. All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade follows the influential British band’s 2015 reunion album, Anthems for Doomed Youth. Listen to its first single, “Run, Run, Run,” below.

    All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade is out March 8 (via Casablanca/Republic). Frontmen Pete Doherty and Carl Barât began work on the album in Jamaica last fall. They convened this February with bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell (both of whom have songwriting credits) at the band’s Albion Rooms in Margate, England, where they recorded the album with producer Dimitri Tikovoï.

    Of “Run, Run, Run,” Barât said in press materials, “It’s about being trapped, and trying to escape your dismal life, a bit like the man in [Charles] Bukowski’s Post Office. The worst thing for the Libertines would be to get stuck in a ‘Run-run-run’ rut, constantly trying to relive our past.” He added, “Our first record was born out of panic, and disbelief that we were actually allowed to be in a studio; the second was born of total strife and misery; the third was born of complexity; this one feels like we were all actually in the same place, at the same speed, and we really connected.”

    Doherty added, “I feel like we’ve completed a cycle of some kind as a band, and finally now we can add these songs to the set list, because we’ve got some bangers in there. Now we’ve opened the hotel and used the studio ourselves and it’s all worked out—more Libertines records? I should hope so!”

    The album is named for both the Erich Maria Remarque novel and the Albion Rooms’ street address. Last year, the band reissued its classic debut, Up the Bracket, for its 20th anniversary.

    The Haxan Cloak has shared a new song, the first track from producer Bobby Krlic under that moniker in over a decade. It’s titled “N/Y,” and it’s also Krlic’s first release on his newly established Archaic Devices label. Check out “N/Y” below.

    “‘N/Y’ is a feeling I’ve had for a really long time,” Krlic said in a statement. “It was made with the intention of being something that I could play live only, and was just this burst of intensity that could re-contextualize anywhere I would play it in. I kept working on it and it became something that I wanted to hear regardless of the context. I made the video in the same way. Making charcoal drawings and oil paintings, then fusing these together with self-shot video of myself in my studio. It feels immediate and without compromise. It was made quickly, in a moment, with complete intention. I really hope it changes the space you’re in.”

    Krlic last released material as the Haxan Cloak in 2013 with Excavation. The new label Archaic Devices will reissue that album, as well as 2011’s The Haxan Cloak. Both releases, plus new merch and a 12″ vinyl pressing of “N/Y,” are available to pre-order now and will ship November 24.

    Since Excavation, Krlic has focused a significant amount of attention on scoring movies, video games, and TV shows, with Snowpiercer, Beef, and Red Dead Redemption 2 among some of his credits. He scored Ari Aster’s horror hit Midsommar in 2019, and worked with the director again for this year’s Beau Is Afraid. He most recently contributed to the soundtrack for the DC superhero film Blue Beetle.
