  • Suspected Palisades Fire Starter Ordered to Remain Behind Bars

    [ad_1]

Jonathan Rinderknecht will remain in custody on charges he ‘maliciously set’ a New Year’s Day blaze in Topanga State Park than smoldered and erupted into the deadly Palisades fire

Jonathan Rinderknecht, the former Uber driver and Pacific Palisades resident charged with intentionally hiking to a clearing where he sparked a wildfire that later ignited into the deadly blaze that killed twelve, will remain in custody while awaiting trial.

That ruling was issued Tuesday by United States Magistrate Judge Rozella A. Oliver in Los Angeles, federal prosecutors say. Rinderknecht was arrested on Oct. 8 at his sister’s home in Florida by agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms just over ten months after the devastating Palisades fire began to devour nearly 7,000 homes and businesses in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu, fueled by the fierce Santa Ana winds that began to rage on the morning of Jan. 7.

“This means he will remain in federal custody without bond while the criminal case against him is pending. We will have no further comment,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney in California’s Central District said in a statement.

Rinderknecht pleaded not guilty at his arraignment late last month in Los Angeles to three federal arson charges: one count of arson affecting property used in interstate commerce, one count of destruction of property by means of fire, and one count of timber set afire, connected to the Lachman fire, which prosecutors say he “maliciously set.”

The blaze smoldered underground for days and became what is known as a “holdover fire,” which then reignited and became the deadly and devastating Palisades fire, ATF and Los Angeles Fire Department officials say.

If convicted, Rinderknecht would serve between five and 45 years in prison for his connection to the Palisades fire that caused $150 billion in damages. Months before the fire, investigators say, Rinderknecht created an eerie AI image of fire using ChatGPT. On the night he allegedly lit the fire, he was listening to a rap song about setting things ablaze, investigators say.

  • Family of Accused Arsonist Speaks Out After Deadly Palisades Fire Charges

    [ad_1]

In a statement, Jonathan Rinderknecht’s father Joel said his son is a “scapegoat” for the “failure of others” that led to the deadly and destructive Palisades fire

The father of accused arsonist Jonathan Rinderknecht told Los Angeles in a statement that his son is a “scapegoat” who is being held criminally liable for the “failure of others” in preventing the explosive Palisades fire that killed twelve and destroyed nearly 6800 homes and businesses.

Federal prosecutors say the younger Rinderknecht “maliciously set” a brushfire in Topanga State Park just after the city rang in the New Year, a blaze that became known as the Lachman fire, one that smoldered for seven days and ignited the Palisades fire on Jan. 7. He was arrested on a single felony count on Oct. 7 in Florida, and the two additional charges were added to his federal indictment.

“There is a lot of misinformation that has wrongfully portrayed our son Jonathan in a false light,” Joel Rinderknect wrote. He and his wife Jennifer are missionaries working in the south of France. The suspect’s father said he and his family stand by their son’s lawyer’s statement that, “To scapegoat Jonathan Rinderknecht and attempt to hold him criminally liable for the failure of others is preposterous.”

His father went on to write that he believes in his son’s innocence. “We steadfastly believe, and are eager for the truth to be told, which will clear Jonathan and our family’s name. We would appreciate your prayers.”

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms – who are leading the investigation into the cause of the Palisades fire – say the younger Rinderknecht, 29, a former Uber driver, dropped off his last passenger on New Year’s Eve, then drove to his old neighborhood near Topanga State Park. He hiked to a clearing, prosecutors now say, known as Hidden Buddha near the Skull Rock trailhead.

Federal prosecutors say they spent months gathering witness statements, video surveillance, cellphone data, and analysis of fire dynamics and patterns, which led then to determine that Rinderknecht was responsible for that wildfire, which then became a “holdover fire,” that sparked the Palisades fire.

  • Who Was Thomas Sanford? What We Know About Michigan Mass Shooting Suspect

    [ad_1]

Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton, Michigan has been identified as the suspect in the mass shooting that killed two and injured eight others at a Mormon Church Sunday, Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye said during a Sunday evening press conference.

The incident started with a car driving into the building before a fire broke out and the suspect began shooting at the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan around 10:25 a.m.

Renye said the 40-year-old suspect was killed in the parking lot of the church less than ten minutes after the first call came in for the shooting.

The suspect was engaged by two officers who were at the church when the incident occurred, one was a DNR officer and the other worked for Grand Blanc Police, Renye said during an earlier press conference.

Multiple agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are investigating the deadly shooting.

Of the eight surviving victims, one remains in critical condition while seven others are in stable condition, Renye said.

The identities of the injured and deceased have not yet been released.

This is a breaking news story. Updates to come.

  • LA Mayor Says ‘Ongoing Federal Investigation’ Into Deadly Palisades Fire Pauses City Report – LAmag

    [ad_1]

An ongoing federal investigation into the deadly Palisades Fire that killed twelve and devoured miles upon miles of the Pacific Palisades and Malibu has led Mayor Karen Bass to pause the release of an after-action report examining the city’s response.

Per state regulation, the city is required to answer questions about what went wrong – like fire hydrants being tapped dry and why fire apparatus couldn’t access the fast-moving, wind-fueled inferno – as a way to address problems that could be prevented at future fires. But Bass said in a late afternoon press statement that federal prosecutors asked the city “late last week” to hold off on the release of the report.

It’s unclear why Bass released the information, and a request for clarification on her announcement was not immediately answered by her media representatives. Her statement indicated that the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California wants to “avoid interference with the ongoing federal investigation.”

Once that report is complete, Bass said, “the after-action report will be released in coordination with the United States Department of Justice.”

The cause of the destructive blaze remains undetermined more than seven months after an arson investigative task force for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms began to pore through the rubble searching for clues. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office had no comment Tuesday night. A spokesperson for the ATF’s field office in Los Angeles has not returned several requests for comment.

There were a slew of arrests made in the aftermath of the Palisades Fire, among them arsonists and criminals who impersonated firefighters. In late January, Los Angeles reported the arrests of an Oregon couple who were arrested after they drove a fake firetruck emblazoned with the name of a nonexistent fire company into the Palisades.

The driver, Dustin Nehl, is a convicted arsonist. His wife, Jenni Nehl, is a wind and fire expert who volunteered for a program run by the National Weather Service. The couple is expected in a Van Nuys courtroom for a pretrial hearing in early October, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.

A day after the Nehl’s arrest, the FBI renewed its hunt for a fugitive ecoterrorist, also from Oregon, named Josephine Sunshine Overaker, who was part of a domestic terrorist outfit known as “the Family.” The terrorists were responsible for a slew of arson attacks, including the burning of a ski resort in Vail, Colorado.

There is a $50,000 reward being offered for information about Overraker. Dustin Nehl told Los Angeles in a phone interview that he did not know anyone in the Family. Nehl also described himself as a “Trump supporter” before asking, “do you know any conservative ecoterrorists?”

In late April, the ATF conducted a controlled burn along the Temescal Ridge Trail between Skull Rock and Green Peak starting Tuesday, which had been the site of a fire days before the historic winds pushed the Palisades Fire all the way to coastal Malibu. That fire near a hiking trail was ignited on New Year’s Day, sparked by fireworks that may still have been smoldering, officials believe.

  • Head Of Bill And Hillary Clinton Airport Shot In The Head

Head Of Bill And Hillary Clinton Airport Shot In The Head

    [ad_1]

Source YouTube: MSNBC, New York Post

Bryan Malinowski, the executive director of the Bill and Hillary Clinton Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas, was shot in the head by federal agents on Tuesday after he opened fire on them.

    Clinton Airport Executive Director Shot

Daily Mail reported that Malinowski, 53, was injured at his west Little Rock home at around 6 a.m. after he opened fire on agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agents were attempting to serve a warrant when someone inside the house began shooting at them.

The ATF, state police and federal prosecutors all refused to reveal what the agents were looking for because the investigation is still ongoing. Agents returned fire and ultimately injured Malinowski, who was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital.

Officials said that an unidentified agent was also shot in the exchange of gunfire, but thankfully the agent’s injuries were not life-threatening. The case will now go to prosecutors, who will determine whether deadly force was used consistent within state law, according to The New York Post.

Malinowski’s Brother And Neighbors Speak Out

Malinowski’s condition is not known at the time of this writing, but a source claimed to the Arkansas Times that he is on life support.

“We don’t know if he’s going to make it in the next 24 hours,” Malinowski’s brother Matthew told NBC News on Wednesday. “He was shot in the head.”

Malinowski went on to say that doctors haven’t performed surgery “because they don’t think he’s gonna make it.”

Neighbors described Malinowski as a gun enthusiast who enjoys buying and trading firearms. Shea De Bruyn, a neighbor of Malinowski’s, told KARK that she was woken up early Tuesday morning by a series of loud bangs.

“My heart was racing, and the dogs were barking,” she recalled. “I’m just really curious as to what was going on just a few houses down.”

    Malinowski’s History

Malinowski has worked in the airline industry for over thirty years, previously working at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, El Paso International Airport in Texas and Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania.

Malinowski began working at Clinton National in 2008 as director of properties, planning and development before being promoted to deputy director in 2009. He went on to take over as executive director of the airport in 2019.

“Today’s incident saddens us, and we pray for everyone involved,” Clinton National Airport, Airport Commission Chairman Bill Walker told Fox News. “As the chairman of the Little Rock Municipal Airport Commission, I have named Tom Clarke, the airport’s deputy executive director, as acting executive director. The airport’s day-to-day operations continue as normal.”

The airport was renamed after Bill and Hillary Clinton back in 2012. The Clinton family has long had ties to Arkansas, where Bill was governor from 1979 to 1981, and again from 1983 to 1992.

Over the years, many people with ties to the Clintons have died under mysterious circumstances. While there is no evidence that Malinowski had direct ties to the Clintons, it seems somewhat ironic that the head of the airport named after them has been shot in the head by federal agents.

  • ATF Director Showcases Astonishing Firearms Ignorance While Advocating for Stricter Gun Control

ATF Director Showcases Astonishing Firearms Ignorance While Advocating for Stricter Gun Control

    [ad_1]

    Opinion

Screenshot YouTube : Face the Nation

Earlier this month, the director of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Steven Dettelbach, sat with Margaret Brennan on CBS’ Face the Nation to discuss gun violence and gun laws in the United States. In addition to the interview, Director Dettelbach provided a hands-on demonstration with what he dubbed one of ATF’s “leading experts” to educate CBS viewers on threats such as the often dubbed “ghost guns.”

The segment was less about educating and more about advocacy, with Ms. Brennan acting as a willing participant to push the narrative that guns are the problem in America and that stricter gun laws and limits to the Second Amendment are the solutions this country needs. Instead of presenting data backed by legally sound arguments for any of the proposed changes to gun laws or the Second Amendment, Director Dettelbach and his “expert” proved that the federal government has no capacity to manage guns or gun violence.

In fact, it’s debatable if Director Dettelbach, let alone his firearms “expert,” has much experience with guns at all.

    Do you even shoot, Bro?

In what was surely meant to be a powerful display of the sheer death and destruction that firearms can wreak, Director Dettelbach brought with him a selection of various guns to show a visibly uncomfortable and disgusted Ms. Brennan what the ATF works with. Director Dettelbach brought his Chief of Firearm’s Ammunition Technology Division, Chris Bort, to assist with this display.

Mr. Bort, whom Director Dettelbach introduced as a “leading expert” at one point, couldn’t disassemble a Glock slide, eventually giving up on camera. To be fair, Mr. Bort was clearly uncomfortable with the task assigned, given his stilted responses to Ms. Brennan’s inquiries, which often had to be handled by Director Dettelbach.

Unfortunately, each time Director Dettelbach stepped in to save his “expert” from having to answer any politically charged or even just in general basic firearm inquiries, his lack of overall subject matter knowledge was displayed. At one point, Director Dettelbach referred to a drum magazine as a “75-round clip”.

For the non-gun owners out there, a magazine feeds rounds into a firearm’s chamber, whereas a clip holds cartridges together. They are not interchangeable pieces and most certainly not the same thing.

This matters – because these definitions find their way into gun control laws written and enforced by the ignorant.

    Actual alarm bells

When discussing the difficulty the ATF has in tracking and identifying individuals who commit gun crimes, the ATF director implied that gun dealers should be tipping off the ATF or flat out refusing lawful sales of firearms based on certain “alarm bells,” as the director put it.

One of these scenarios provided by Director Dettelbach went as follows:

“…somebody comes into your store, in a border state and plunks down $12,000 cash money for one of these (.50 caliber rifles), so that there’s no credit card trail, I mean, my word, we hope that people will help us as Americans and continue to help us and not make that sale and protect our safety.”

Last I checked, cash was still a form of legal tender in this country. There could be any number of reasons why a citizen may opt to pay cash for any number of items. The fact that the government is uncomfortable with you paying cash is, in fact, the best reason to do it.

RELATED: Award-Winning Investigative Journalist Catherine Herridge, Who Had Files Taken By CBS, Held In Contempt

The next example Director Dettelbach provided was the tone-deaf claim that “all sorts of alarm bells should be going off” if a couple comes into a gun store and the man asks all the questions, but then the woman purchases the firearm. As if the only plausible explanation is that the woman is being manipulated by a bad actor man who intends to use the weapon himself for nefarious reasons.

It could be that the woman, like in my case, when I went to purchase my firearm, wanted to avoid the probably irritating male chauvinism I might face and that since my husband is a trained firearms expert, he would also think to ask questions I might not.

I tell you what should make alarm bells go off: the fact that the head of the ATF doesn’t understand basic firearms nomenclature.

    What are you even saying?

During the interview segment, Director Dettelbach manages to evade, albeit clumsily, Ms. Brennan’s blatant advocacy for a national gun owner registry. He does make sure to add that the ATF’s job is more challenging because of a lack of a central national gun registry, stating:

“The way it doesn’t happen is we punch in a person’s name, and up comes ‘oh, they own so many guns.’ Congress has prohibited us from doing that.”

Correction: the Constitution prohibits the ATF from doing that, because the federal government is not given any such authority in our founding law.

RELATED: Kid Rock Backtracks On His Viral Bud Light Video – ‘Tantrum With A Machine Gun’

Thank God for that; the level of naivety and ignorance on display is enough of an argument against giving these people more power over guns. When asked how they are working to “sharpen” their agency and work within these Congressional constraints, Director Dettelbach explained:

“…we use what’s called crime gun intelligence, which is a fancy term, but basically, it applies to being able to follow the gun, to take a crime gun, right. So a crime gun, which is something that’s involved with a crime, and squeeze every last bit of evidence and intel we can out of the thing that comes out of the gun, the bullet; the cartridge casing that’s ejected out the back of the gun; the outside of the gun, things like the serial number; and the inside of the gun, the markings inside of the gun.”

I’m glad he was able to clarify that a crime gun is a gun involved with a crime and that the “thing” that comes out of the gun is called a bullet. It sounds like what the ATF does is pretty standard; it’s called evidence gathering.

It is not a fancy term, but a tried and true one nonetheless. While I’m all for legal gun ownership and protecting the Second Amendment, it might not be a bad idea to make sure Director Dettelbach and Mr. Bort don’t touch any guns; I don’t feel like they could operate one safely.
