Protests against arrest of one of top rivals of Indian Prime Minister Modi continue for second day

NEW DELHI – Hundreds of protesters in India’s capital took to the streets for a second day Saturday, demanding the immediate release of one of the top rivals of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the country gears up for a national election next month.

Arvind Kejriwal, New Delhi’s top elected official and one of the country’s most consequential politicians of the past decade, was arrested by the federal Enforcement Directorate Thursday night. The agency, controlled by Modi’s government, accused his party and ministers of accepting 1 billion rupees ($12 million) in bribes from liquor contractors nearly two years ago.

His Aam Aadmi Party, or Common People’s Party, denied the accusations and said Friday Kejriwal would remain Delhi’s chief minister as it took the matter to court.

Kejriwal was taken into custody for seven days following a court order on Friday.

Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita, had a message Saturday she said was from her detained husband. Posted on the AAP party X account, the message relayed Kerijwal as saying he wasn’t surprised by the arrest for he has “struggled a lot” and warning against “several forces within and outside India that are weakening the country.”

Chanting: “Kejriwal is Modi’s doom” and “Dictatorship won’t be tolerated,” protesters accused Modi on Saturday of governing the country under a state of emergency — a claim the opposition has long professed — and using federal law enforcement agencies to stifle opposition parties before the election.

Lily Tiga, a protester, told The Associated Press that when “a person who does good, fights for truth, fights for the downtrodden and poor is arrested, it’s not only unfortunate, it is a time to mourn for this country.”

On Friday, hundreds of AAP supporters and some senior party leaders clashed with the police, who whisked a number of them away in buses.

In the lead-up to the general election , starting April 19, India’s opposition parties have accused the government of misusing its power to harass and weaken its political opponents, pointing to a spree of raids, arrests and corruption investigations against key opposition figures. Meanwhile, some probes against erstwhile opposition leaders who later defected to Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have been dropped.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, denies targeting the opposition and says law enforcement agencies act independently.

Kejriwal’s AAP is part of a broad alliance of opposition parties called INDIA, the main challenger to Modi’s BJP in the coming election.

His arrest is another setback for the bloc, and came after the country’s main opposition Congress party accused the government Thursday of freezing its bank accounts in a tax dispute to cripple it. This has led to a rare show of strength by the opposition figures who slammed the move as undemocratic and accused Modi’s party of misusing the agency to undermine them.

In 2023, the agency arrested Kejriwal’s deputy, Manish Sisodia, and AAP lawmaker Sanjay Singh as part of the same case. Both remain in jail.

  • Delhi air pollution: Primary schools shut from tomorrow, outdoor activities restricted, says Kejriwal

Delhi air pollution: Primary schools shut from tomorrow, outdoor activities restricted, says Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

All primary schools in Delhi will be closed from tomorrow until further notice due to the rising pollution levels in the national capital, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said. He added that any outdoor activities for students of all classes above class 5 will also not be allowed.

While addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said, “We’re taking all steps to control the pollution situation. In lieu of that, we’re shutting down all primary schools in Delhi from tomorrow… Also shutting down outdoor activities for all classes above class 5.” Kejriwal was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at the press conference.

He further stated that the Delhi government is also mulling to bring the odd-even scheme for vehicles into effect given the worsening air quality. Kejriwal also said Delhi’s alarming air pollution levels and air quality are not just the AAP government’s problems and asked the Centre to intervene.

He said, “AAP governments in Punjab and Delhi can’t be solely blamed for air pollution.” The Delhi Chief Minister also urged the Centre to not engage in blame game politics and admitted Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab contributes to pollution in Delhi. However, he said farmers could be blamed for the same.

Air quality index (AQI) at Delhi’s Lodhi Road stood at 396 (very poor) whereas it stood at 471 (severe) near the Delhi University area as of 11:40 am, according to SAFAR. AQI at Pusa Road, IIT Delhi, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport terminal 3, Mathura Road, Dhirpur and  Noida stood at 443 (severe), 382 (very poor), 474 (severe), 438 (severe), 469 (severe) and 526 (severe) respectively.

  • BJP MLA shares morphed pic of Rs 200 note with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

BJP MLA shares morphed pic of Rs 200 note with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

    [ad_1]

Soon after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal to the Centre vis-a-vis incorporating Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi’s pictures on currency notes, which has gone viral, BJP MLA from Kankavli in Maharashtra Nitesh Rane shared the picture of a morphed Rs 200 note with a picture of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Twitter. Rane tweeted, “This is perfect!”

This, however, was not the only suggestion that came in after Kejriwal’s comments. Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib Manish Tewari said the currency notes could have a picture of Mahatma Gandhi on one side and of Dr BR Ambedkar on the other. Tewari tweeted, “Why not Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s photograph on the new series of currency notes? One side the great Mahatma the other side Dr Ambedkar. Non-violence, constitutionalism and egalitarianism fusing in a unique union that would sum up the modern Indian genius perfectly.”

Congress spokesperson and senior advocate Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi also shared his views on Kejriwal’s appeal and said that while the Delhi Chief Minister’s idea to put image of Goddess Lakshmi on currency notes is not misplaced, “once we start tinkering with age old established norms, then you would have an endless queue of claimants seeking representation on diverse currency notes.”

Congress leader Salman Anees Soz also weighed in and noted that if Lakshmi and Ganesha, inclusion of Budhha, Allah and Jesus will usher in even more prosperity. Soz tweeted, “Dear Arvind Kejriwal: If Laxmi and Ganesha can bring prosperity, then we should make sure we get even more prosperity and include Allah, Jesus, Guru Nanak and Mahavira too.”

Kejriwal stirred a hornet’s nest after he said that the Central government should print pictures of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on currency notes alongside the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi. Kejriwal noted that this is one way to ensure that efforts towards improving India’s economic conditions will bear fruit.

“There should be a picture of Lakshmi ji and Ganesh ji on the currency with Gandhi ji, the deteriorating economy of the country will be blessed- many steps should be taken, this is also one of them. On Diwali, we all worship Lakshmi ji and Vighnaharta Ganesh ji for prosperity,” Kejriwal appealed to the Central government.
