Du Yun receives a 2023 Vilcek Prize in Music for her open approach to composition, which stretches the boundaries of traditional classical music by incorporating influences from punk, electronic, experimental music, and spoken word traditions. The composer, performer, and advocate is renowned for her artistic leadership as a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, and for her groundbreaking operas Zolle and Angel’s Bone.“Du Yun’s phenomenal range is apparent in the span of her work—from her operas to her electrifying postmodern compositions,” says Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel. “From the atonal jazz of her band OK MISS to the haunting movements of A Cockroach’s Tarantella, her work bridges sound art and classical composition.”
The Vilcek Prize in Music is a $100,000 prize awarded by the Vilcek Foundation as part of the Vilcek Foundation Prizes. The prizes are awarded annually in recognition and celebration of immigrant vanguards in the arts and in biomedical science whose work has had a profound impact on culture and society. In addition to providing direct support to immigrant artists and scientists, the purpose of the prizes is to raise awareness of the importance of immigration to intellectual and cultural life in the United States.
In recognition of Du Yun’s receipt of the Vilcek Prize, the Vilcek Foundation has published a video biography and in-depth profile on the foundation’s website, Du Yun: “You can’t think of things that don’t work as a failure”.
At the age of 4, Du Yun asked for a piano, and for music lessons. Her parents—both factory workers in Shanghai—let her know they would be willing to make the financial sacrifices necessary to support her pursuit of music, but that such sacrifice would require Du Yun’s commitment and dedication. Du Yun didn’t hesitate. This tenacity has characterized Du Yun’s career. She insists that her talent is not innate but has come from years of work—her own, and that of her family.
“To be an artist is such a privilege,” she says. “So many people worked so that you can do the thing you want to do.”
Du Yun receives the Vilcek Prize in Music, as does Benin-born singer and songwriter Angélique Kidjo. In 2023, the Vilcek Foundation is also awarding three smaller prizes of $50,000 each—the Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in Music—to young immigrant musicians whose work demonstrates a unique perspective and represents an important contribution to their genre. The 2023 Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in Music are awarded to Arooj Aftab (b. Saudi Arabia to Pakistani parents), Juan Pablo Contreras (b. Mexico), and Ruby Ibarra (b. Philippines).

Ashley Olsen Reportedly Secretly Marries Artist Louis Eisner

Ashley Olsen and her longtime boyfriend, artist Louis Eisner, apparently secretly tied the knot last week.
The very private couple kept their recent nuptials totally under wraps, according to Page Six. The pair held the low-key ceremony at a private home in Bel-Air last Wednesday with only a few dozen guests in attendance. While no concrete details about the ceremony have been divulged, an insider did tell the outlet that the party “went late with 50 people or so total” in attendance.
Olsen and Eisner have been dating since October 2017, but the fashion designer has yet to publicly comment on their relationship. They also very rarely make public appearances, only walking one red carpet together over the course of their relationship. They made their official debut last September at an event held in honor of the Young Eisner Scholars, a nonprofit founded by the artist’s father, attorney Eric Eisner, who was formerly the president of the David Geffen Company. Eisner’s mother is jewelry designer Lisa Eisner who was also formally the West Coast editor of Vogue.
Olsen first sparked rumors she might be engaged in June 2019 when she was spotted out on a movie and dinner date in Los Angeles with Eisner. She was dressed casually at the time in an oversized black sweatshirt and matching sweatpants, but fans noticed a new, dark band adorning her lefthand ring finger. The painter is also the one responsible for posting that instantly viral photo of his girlfriend to Instagram last year showing her hiking through the woods in an all-white ensemble while carrying a giant machete and a glass of white wine in her hand.
In June 2021, Olsen and her twin sister Mary-Kate shared a bit about why they prefer to keep everything about heir lives so private after spending so much of their childhood in the spotlight. “We were raised to be discreet people,” Mary-Kate told i-D when asked about their label The Row’s restrained designs. Ashley added, “I think that potentially that’s just our aesthetic, our design preference. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t also appreciate something truly ornate or maximal. Sometimes a collection even starts quite like that, and then gets pared down. It doesn’t always start from that simplistic place.”

Irina Pushkareva began to draw and paint as soon as she could hold a pencil at the age of 1 and half. In her teenage years, Irina was trained in traditional ways of painting and drawing, but found it restricting and wanted to break free from traditional art. In 2016, while studying in Parsons, Pushkareva developed her own contemporary oil painting style, which allowed her to create “lines” of oil paint, instead of blending all the shades together like seen in traditional art forms.
