The Arlington school board voted Feb. 19 to approve changes to the district’s enrollment boundaries that will determine where the students at a beloved elementary school that will be closing in May will be sent to.

In January, the board voted to close Blanton Elementary School, a primarily Hispanic school in north Arlington that has received failing grades from TEA since 2023 and faces costly repairs to aging infrastructure.

When Blanton closes at the end of the school year, students will be sent to four other Arlington ISD elementary schools in the same general area.

On Thursday, the board reviewed a presentation from Arlington ISD Chief Operations Officer Michael Hill, who updated them on the timeline of the closure so far.

The district held meetings with Blanton parents on Feb. 10, Hill said, where some parents voiced concerns about adequate transportation to the new schools, assistance with transferring and enrolling, and keeping students and teachers who are in Blanton’s special education programs together.

“That is a major concern of mine,” said board member Larry Mike. “We took an active step to close this school down, and we have parents who have lived in that area particularly for that school…all of this, as long as we take care of the students and the staff, is fine with me.”

The board members were generally on board with the boundaries and overall plan presented, but had questions about the timeline and how parent concerns would be addressed.

“I truly believe, from what we know…this is the best case scenario,” said board member Sarah McMurrough.

Arlington ISD Superintendent Matt Smith said that before the transition, students and their families will be able to tour the schools.

An event will be held at Blanton where parents and staff from each of the four schools will speak to Blanton parents.

Board president Justin Chapa also reiterated at the meeting that Blanton staff and faculty will be given offers to move to other schools.

Richardson made a motion to approve the change, which was unanimously approved.

The woman shot and killed along Interstate 20 in Arlington on Nov. 12 was five months pregnant and died shielding her other children from gunfire, her family said.

Twenty-nine-year-old Bre’asia Simone Johnson died from a gunshot wound to the torso, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Johnson was the mother of three children, aged 6, 7, and 2, her family said on a GoFundMe page for her funeral expenses.

“Bre’Asia’s final, selfless act was to protect the very children she loved with all her heart,” her family wrote. “Tragically, her children are now left behind, without their mother, and the unborn child will never have the chance to know the love and warmth Bre’Asia was so ready to give.”

Arlington police officers responded to an Arlington QuikTrip location in the 4900 block of Little Road shortly after 7:40 p.m. Wednesday night, police said.

Homicide detectives learned the victims were traveling westbound on Interstate 20 near Bowman Springs Road when someone fired at their vehicle, the Star-Telegram previously reported.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting and who is responsible, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Allison Allen at 817-575-8613. Anonymous tips can be phoned in to Crime Stoppers of Tarrant County at 817-469-8477.

  • Man charged in 2021 killing of transgender woman in Arlington

The man was already serving a 7-year sentence in state custody from an unrelated aggravated robbery case, police said.

Arlington police have arrested a man in the 2021 death of a transgender woman at an apartment complex, according to a news release.

Arthur Morris Jr., 25, is charged with one count of murder in the September 2021 death of 21-year-old Kier Solomon, police said.

Morris is currently serving a 7-year prison sentence in an unrelated aggravated robbery case.

Officers initially responded to the apartment complex in the 1100 block of Stonetrail Road on the night of Sept. 30, 2021, and found Solomon slumped over in the seat of a parked, running car, police said.

Police recovered Solomon’s cellphone and found that she had been messaging someone via an app about meeting at the location, according to the statement.

Investigators determined that the phone number Solomon was messaging was a number generated by the app, police said.

Two weeks prior, at the same location, a different victim was robbed at gunpoint after messaging someone on the same app, police said. The victim told investigators Morris was the suspect in that case.

Last month, search warrants for the app revealed that an email address and cellphone number connected to Morris had been used in both cases, according to the statement.

Records for that number placed Morris at the crime scene before, during and after Solomon’s murder, police said.

Morris has also been charged with another count of aggravated robbery in connection to the other case, according to the statement. He will be returned to Tarrant County for arraignment on the new charges.
