The Little Mermaid live-action remake and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts—two of the biggest upcoming movies of 2023—don’t share much in common. However, an apparent film projector accident at a theater showing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 led to the trailers for the two films playing at the same time. The end result might just be the best movie of the year.
I’ll say right now that while I’m excited to see the new Guardians film, I’ve got little interest in the live-action Mermaid remake and even less desire to see another Transformers movie that isn’t Bumblebee 2. So I wasn’t expecting to be dazzled when I saw a tweet claiming that a theater had screwed up and played the trailers for both upcoming blockbusters at the same time. I almost didn’t even click to watch the video. I’m so happy I did because what was created by mashing up these two teasers is fantastic.
In the video uploaded on Friday—which has already gone viral and been reshared all over Twitter—a theater in Tenesse appears to start playing trailers for both Transformers and The Little Mermaid at the same time, with audio of Ariel singing all that can be heard during the entire clip. The weirdest part about all of this is how well the two trailers sync up, which is probably a sign that movie trailers are following similar formulas and pacing guidelines and not some cosmic bit of content creation. But still, fun to watch!
At one point during the video, you can hear someone mention that “This looks like the best movie ever” and I’m inclined to agree. At the very least it would likely be more entertaining than Disney’s previous live-action misfires or most of the Transformers films. At the end of the video, you can even hear the audience start to applaud the odd concoction of Disney nostalgia and transforming animals.
The original poster of the video explained to Kotaku that this odd mashup happened during an evening showing of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at an AMC theater in Franklin, Tennessee.
According to Blake Perry, the staff at the theater didn’t say anything afterward and the rest of the trailers were shown without issue. “It was just such a strange coincidence and everyone in my auditorium loved it!!”
Of course, the question now is if any studio or company involved in this weird bit of accidental crossover marketing will latch on to the viral moment and try to take advantage of it. I can see the Transformers-branded social media accounts posting some fan art of Ariel and Optimus Prime chilling and singing together. In a world where Fortnite brings characters like Batman and Luke Skywalker together with Ariana Grande and Master Chief, it’s not that wild to think the brands might come together to squeeze all the fun and joy out of this odd bit of accidental viral marketing.
Or wait, is this just a Fortnite teaser? Damn it.
Update 5/5/2023 4:55 p.m. ET: This story was updated to include more information from the original poster of the viral video.

Some people simply refuse to see the magic in Disney‘s upcoming The Little Mermaid live-action remake.
During the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, actor Halle Bailey, who plays titular mermaid character Ariel, and Melissa McCarthy, who plays Ursula, introduced the first full-length trailer for the much-anticipated remake.
Previously, Disney had released two short teaser trailers that offered only glimpses of Ariel and her oceanic companions.
The new two-minute trailer — which shows scenes of Ariel saving Prince Eric from drowning in a storm — has been viewed 7.9 million times on YouTube. The feedback online, however, has not been entirely positive, with the trailer garnering at least 839,000 dislikes since it was posted on Monday. There are only 165,000 likes on the video.
Backlash against the film has existed since the project was announced publicly. When it was reported in 2019 that 22-year-old Bailey would play Ariel, there was an instant negative wave of criticism online from those who felt a Black woman should not play the iconic mermaid princess.
The social media tag #NotMyAriel trended as a result.
YouTube as a whole even opted to disable the site’s public dislike counter as a result of a hateful barrage on the original teaser trailer, which amassed 1.5 million dislikes in the first two days of its September 2022 release.
Last month, Bailey spoke to the magazine The Face about the racism she’s experienced as a result of playing Ariel.
“As a Black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore,” she told the outlet.
Still, Bailey said she does not have regrets and maintained that it is important to see Black people in major movies.
“People don’t understand that when you’re Black there’s this whole other community. It’s so important for us to see ourselves,” she said.
Bailey said the reaction from young Black girls who watched the original trailer and saw themselves in the newest Disney princess was enough to remind her of that importance. Within hours of the original trailer’s release, parents on social media shared dozens of videos of their children reacting to the first view of Bailey as Ariel.
Sitting directly in front of her TV, one young girl shouted as Ariel appeared on screen, and even did a double-take to make sure what she was seeing was true. While rolling with excitement on the floor, the girl said, “She’s brown like me. I’m so excited.”
The new live-action film is a remake of the Disney animated classic The Little Mermaid from 1989. The story follows a young mermaid, Ariel, who makes a deal with an evil sea witch to grow legs and live on land in order to fall in love with a prince, all at the cost of her voice.
Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric, while several other powerhouse performers play various roles, including Javier Bardem as Ariel’s father King Triton, Daveed Diggs as the crab Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Ariel’s best fish friend Flounder and Awkwafina as the seagull, Scuttle.
The film will have its theatrical release on May 26, 2023.

In a brand-new teaser trailer for the upcoming Little Mermaid movie, Disney gave excited fans a first look at everyone’s favourite most feared sea witch, Ursula.
In the 30-second trailer released Wednesday, Melissa McCarthy, who plays Ursula, is briefly seen with her face obscured by a long, dark tentacle. As the trailer closes with Ariel’s iconic ballad, Part of Your World, McCarthy teases her chilling, evil cackle.

Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel, is seen swimming through coral reefs and bouncing on pillowy groups of jellyfish in the trailer. Disney gave audiences a brief peek of Ariel and Prince Eric’s almost-kiss on a small boat.
Already, the reimagined The Little Mermaid has struck a chord with Disney fans, especially young Black girls who see themselves in Bailey’s mermaid princess. When the first trailer dropped in September, Black Disney fans young and old praised the film for its casting. On social media, parents shared dozens of videos of their children reacting to the first view of Bailey as Ariel.
Sitting directly in front of her TV, one young girl shouted as Ariel appeared on screen, and even did a double-take to make sure what she was seeing was true. Writhing with excitement on the floor, the girl said, “She’s brown like me. I’m so excited.”
