  • Massage therapist turns himself into Arapahoe Co. Detention Facility for sexual assault on a child allegations

    [ad_1]

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A licensed massage therapist turned himself into the Arapahoe County Detention Facility for allegations of sexual assault on a child, the sheriff’s office announced Thursday.

Christopher Ost, 39, is suspected of secretly videotaping clients — both adults and minors — without their consent. Ost gave massages out of his home in Centennial mostly, but occasionally visited client homes and provided services to children with special needs in the Denver metro area.

He faces two felony charges of sexual assault on a child and three misdemeanor charges of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification.

Ost has been released from jail and the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) suspended his massage therapist license on November 21, pending further investigation.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone with information on Ost or believes they may be a victim to call the tipline at 720-874-8477 or file a complaint with DORA here.

  • Colorado Sen. Faith Winter, killed in I-25 crash, remembered for relentless advocacy, ‘tremendous heart’

    [ad_1]

State Sen. Faith Winter was a fierce and relentless advocate for Colorado’s families, climate and transportation who forever altered the state’s political landscape by fighting to make it a better place to live, her friends and colleagues said Thursday.

Winter was killed Wednesday night in a five-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 25 near Centennial. She was 45 years old.

Winter’s death was confirmed late Wednesday by Gov. Jared Polis and legislative leaders, and Polis ordered flags be lowered to half-staff in her honor on the day of her memorial service, which has not been announced.

“Our state is shaken by the loss of Senator Faith Winter, and I send my deepest condolences to her children, loved ones, friends, and colleagues across our state,” Polis said in a statement.

“I have had the honor of working with her on many issues to improve the lives of every person and family in our great state and tackling climate change. I am deeply saddened for her family, her friends and colleagues and her community. Faith’s work and advocacy made Colorado a better state.”

The Arapahoe County coroner’s office on Thursday confirmed Winter was killed in the crash, which also injured three others and closed northbound I-25 for more than five hours Wednesday night.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and additional information likely will not be released until next week, Arapahoe County sheriff’s Deputy John Bartmann said Thursday. No one has been cited or arrested in connection with the crash.

Winter’s 10-year career in the statehouse exemplified her deep passion for making the lives of everyday Coloradans better as well as her remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, friends and colleagues told The Denver Post.

A Democrat from Broomfield, Winter served in the House from 2015 to 2019, moving over to the Senate after she won a seat in 2018. She also served on the Westminster City Council earlier in her career.

Winter was a driving force behind bringing paid family leave to Colorado; passing a massive 2021 transportation bill to improve the state’s roadways and expand transit options; and strengthening protections against workplace harassment, among many other initiatives.

“Faith was a deeply complex person, and she moved through multiple challenges with grace and remained dedicated to the work she was doing,” state Sen. Lisa Cutter said in an interview Thursday. “She believed in the work she was doing, believed in the power of friendship and connection and will always live on that way and certainly live on in my heart.”

Winter led the way in addressing sexual harassment in Colorado workplaces as well as her own workplace — the halls and chambers of the Capitol.

  • Flaming carcass of electrocuted bird caused July brush fire in Arapahoe County, officials said

Flaming carcass of electrocuted bird caused July brush fire in Arapahoe County, officials said

    [ad_1]

The flaming carcass of an electrocuted bird was determined to be the cause of a July brush fire in Arapahoe County that burned more than 1,100 acres and destroyed property southeast of Byers, according to a report released Friday by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The Quail Hollow Fire report, issued by the Byers Fire Protection District and the Strasburg Fire Protection District, said on the morning of July 13, a small bird came into contact with an energized electrical pole on the south side of 2490 S. Quail Hollow Drive.

The bird’s flaming body then fell into vegetation at the base of the power pole which provided the initial fuel for the fire, the report said.

Dry vegetation, heavy fuel load in the area, winds and the local topography allowed the fire to spread, the report said.

  • Colorado law enforcement report few impacts to 911, emergency services amid global technology outage

Colorado law enforcement report few impacts to 911, emergency services amid global technology outage

    [ad_1]

DENVER — Numerous police departments across the United States have reported that the worldwide technology outage affected their 911 service Friday morning, according to Scripps News.

The Colorado Springs 911 Emergency Communications Center was one of them. The Colorado Springs Fire Department reported the impacts on the social media site X, saying in part:

“It’s important to emphasize CSFD is continuing to respond to all emergencies. 9-1-1 phone lines and department radios are NOT affected and regular patrols remain active in the city. We want to remind community members to still call 9-1-1 for any life-threatening situation or crime in progress. Drivers involved in any serious traffic accidents involving death or serious injuries requiring medical attention, or if alcohol or impairment is suspected, should still call 9-1-1. However, if all drivers are present with a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance information and there is no property damage or injury, you can report the accident within 72 hours online.”

Callers were also able to reach Denver 911 and the non-emergency line despite the global technology outage, according to the Denver Department of Public Safety.

“Denver 9-1-1 was back to full operations at 6:10 a.m. this morning, and all systems are functioning normally at this time,” the Denver Department of Public Safety said.

Aurora police said the department experienced some effects.

“Our CAD dispatch system [computer-aided dispatch] went down about 10:30 p.m. and we had to transition to manual dispatch. CAD was restored about 2 a.m. and we have been operating normally since,” Aurora police said Friday morning.

But 911 phone lines were unaffected by the outage, Aurora police told Denver7.

Colorado State Patrol told Denver7 there were some impacts on dispatch, but none on emergency services. Phones were still working and CSP did not any delays in response times.

Similarly, the Denver Police Department said the outage did not impact fundamental safety services, such as the ability for officers to respond to calls. However, DPD sent Denver7 a statement that said in part:

“The primary impact to DPD patrol operations was that officers were unable to use the laptop terminals in patrol vehicles, and those systems have been restored. During that time, reports that are typically created by officers and submitted electronically were being done as paper reports. The Department is working to restore supporting systems that currently remain offline.”

On the other hand, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office told Denver7 there were no impacts as of 5:50 a.m. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office also said they were also unaware of any issues.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said, the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack — and that a fix was on the way. The company said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.

    [ad_1]

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is searching for the driver who crashed into a Centennial gas pump and then took off.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. Thursday at the Conoco gas station located at 6450 South Broadway in Centennial.

The sheriff’s office said deputies first spotted the late-model purple Dodge Challenger heading northbound on S. Broadway at 90 mph. Deputies tried to stop the vehicle but the driver sped up — reaching speeds of more than 100 mph — and eluded authorities, according to the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses told investigators the Challenger tried to turn eastbound on E. Panama Drive when it hit a curb, lost control and collided with the gas pump, the sheriff’s office said. The driver then sped off.

The collision caused roughly $30,000 in damage to the gas station, according to the sheriff’s office.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the department’s tip line at 720-874-8477.

Pedestrian struck and killed in Centennial, eastbound lanes of Arapahoe Road closed

    [ad_1]

Sheriff’s deputies have closed the eastbound lanes of East Arapahoe Road at South Dexter Street in Centennial after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a driver Monday morning.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian remained on scene and is being cooperative. Traffic is being diverted on to South Dexter Street and the eastbound lanes of East Arapahoe Road are expected to remain closed until at least 9 a.m.

It’s not clear from the sheriff’s office post on X what caused the collision but a photo that was posted on the social media platform shows a road that is partially covered by snow.

A snowstorm that hit the metro area Sunday night and into Monday morning led to multiple road closures in and around the area.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — An owner was given two warnings after a baby goat named Nibbles was left inside a locked car overnight at an Arapahoe County apartment complex.

According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found Nibbles around 6 a.m. Thursday at an apartment complex in the 10200 block of East Peakview Avenue. The sheriff’s office said the goat was locked in the car inside a crate overnight with no food or water.

    Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office

Nibbles did not appear to be in distress and seemed to be doing OK, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found the owner and gave him two warnings: he had to get Nibbles veterinary care within four days and provide the goat with food and water. The sheriff’s office said if the owner doesn’t comply with the warnings, he will be cited for neglect for failing to provide adequate care and basic needs for Nibbles.

  • Family-owned Colorado tennis and pickleball store falls victim to string of thefts

Family-owned Colorado tennis and pickleball store falls victim to string of thefts

    [ad_1]

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A 35-year-old family-owned Colorado business suffered a string of thefts over a two-week period. Game Set Match has three locations in Colorado: Denver, Centennial and Boulder. All three of their stores were hit by two groups of thieves.

Cameras at the stores saw a man and woman enter and steal several Pickleball paddles. Another group of thieves – three women – also stole the paddles by hiding them under their shawls and dresses.

Family-owned Colorado tennis and pickleball store falls victim to string of thefts

Owner Adam Burbary decried the thefts, which cost them an estimated $20,000-30,000.

“It’s unbelievable,” Burbary said. “We experienced almost 120 Pickleball paddles stolen at this point, plus some other products taken.”

Burbary estimated the value of each paddle between $200-300, making them difficult to replace. Burbary began to notice the thefts after his local managers saw discrepancies in their counts. The paddles’ high price tags means they don’t have many in stock at each store, so their absence was notable.

Cameras picked up the thefts, with the most recent happening on Feb 16. Burbary notified the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department on Feb. 17. The sheriff’s office has assigned an investigator to the case.

“We had to move all our paddles,” Burbary said.

To prevent future thefts, Burbary moved all the Pickleball paddles closer to the store counters and placed tennis rackets in their stead. Although the tennis rackets could also be taken, their larger size makes it difficult for thieves to escape the stores without being noticed.

Additionally, Burbary has implemented a new policy at the stores to have staff threading rackets near their more expensive merchandise – a move he wished didn’t have to be made.

    Sam Pena

Family-owned Game Set Match in Colorado experienced a string of thefts, costing them over $20,000.

The biggest thing is my disappointment in humanity right now,” Burbary said. “I don’t want to treat you any differently, I want you to come to the shop and enjoy what we do.”

Denver7 asked the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office if they’ve seen any other documented thefts at this time, but they aren’t aware at this time if other businesses were impacted.
