  • Rosa, Monterey Bay Aquarium’s oldest otter and a social media star, dies at 24

Rosa, Monterey Bay Aquarium’s oldest otter and a social media star, dies at 24

Rosa, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s oldest sea otter and one of its social media stars, died Wednesday, the aquarium said in a statement.

The southern sea otter, 24, had served as a surrogate mother for 15 otters, the most in the aquarium’s history. She outlived the life expectancy for her species in the wild, which is typically 15 to 20 years, according to a post by the aquarium on Facebook.

Rosa was known for her blond head and “her signature head-all-the-way-back swimming style,” the aquarium wrote.

“Rosa was one of our most playful sea otters, and even at 24 years old, she would still be seen frolicking and wrestling with the younger otters when she instigated it,” said Melanie Oerter, curator of mammals.

“Rosa was usually found sleeping against the window while on exhibit with her chin tucked tight into her chest and her tail swishing back and forth,” she said.

She first arrived as a “five-pound, four-week-old pup after being stranded as an orphan in September 1999,” and was released into the wild for several years, according to a page about Rosa on the aquarium’s website. She returned to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 2002 after experts determined that she had become too accustomed to humans and was not suited for life in the wild.

In the past several weeks, Rosa’s health deteriorated, and experts at the aquarium decided to euthanize her. “She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her caretakers,” according to the aquarium’s post.

In the post, the aquarium called Rosa a “charismatic ambassador for her threatened species” who played “a leading role in the story of sea otter recovery from near-extinction during the fur trade.”

Aperture Pet & Life Expands Aquaillumination Product Lineup

Aperture Pet & Life, the integrated company for some of the largest brands in the aquatics industry, including Bulk Reef Supply, Neptune Systems, Ecotech and Aquaillumination (AI), is proud to announce two new pumps in its product lineup. The Orbit Cross-Flow circulation pumps and the Axis centrifugal return pumps add to the expanding flexibility and comprehensiveness of the AI product offering.

Orbit was designed in partnership with Maxspect, leveraging its best-in-class and patented gyre technology and coupling it with AI’s world-renowned intelligent software. It’s a cross-flow circulation pump that is a marine aquarist favorite for creating “gyre” type flow that circles or orbits the aquarium. The Orbit pump comes in two sizes: the Orbit 2, ideal for aquariums 20-88 gallons, and the Orbit 4, ideal for aquariums 20-120 gallons.

Axis, which comes in three sizes — the 20, 40 and 90, is a centrifugal pump designed to create superior flow in large aquariums and all the way down to small Nano aquariums as well. Axis has the ideal flow for both saltwater and freshwater aquariums.

Key Features and Benefits of the Orbit and Axis Pumps:

    1. Fully Adjustable DC Pumps: Utilizes DC motors coupled with AI driver technology to provide fully controllable, quiet and efficient operation.
    2. Wireless Communication: Controllable with a smartphone or tablet and the free myAI or Mobius control apps. Also compatible with the Neptune Apex MXM.
    3. Real-Time Programming and Control: 24-hour adjustable programmability, calibration and feed modes included. No additional equipment required.
    4. Connected to Your Ecosystem: Control AI and EcoTech Marine devices through Mobius or myAI iOS or Android apps and the Neptune Systems MXM with the Apex Fusion app.

“Orbit and Axis underline our goal of increasing the availability of intelligent technology for aquariums of all shapes and sizes,” said Allan Bazinet, Chief Technology Officer of Aperture. “They are both exceptional additions to the AI brand, designed to help aquarists continue to be successful in their aquatic journey.”

  • L.A. Zoo helps launch first-of-its-kind network to combat wildlife trafficking

L.A. Zoo helps launch first-of-its-kind network to combat wildlife trafficking

Ninja poked his head out from under his shell and nibbled away at food scraps next to a podium at the Los Angeles Zoo as Chief Executive and Director Denise Verret made a landmark announcement.

The radiated tortoise, who was confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service alongside dozens of other critically endangered, trafficked reptiles and brought to the zoo in 1998, is now “thriving and healthy,” Verret said.

Ninja is one of 50 animals at the Los Angeles Zoo that were placed there after being confiscated — a success story that officials hope will be replicated by the first-of-its-kind program announced Friday: the Southern California Wildlife Confiscations Network.

A tomistoma, a freshwater crocodilian confiscated in 1998 as a hatchling, is shown at the Los Angeles Zoo.

(Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

The partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Assn. of Zoos and Aquariums aims to simplify the placement of confiscated animals by having a regional point of contact for wildlife enforcement officers to find trusted animal care facilities. The logistics of finding placement for a confiscated animal can be a challenge for federal wildlife officers, who must also juggle the trafficking investigation.

In the past, wildlife enforcement agents have had to rely on informal contacts and relationships with local zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries and wildlife rescues.

Under the wildlife confiscations network, a pilot program that officials plan to replicate nationwide beginning next year, a newly established confiscations coordinator will note the specific housing needs of the species involved and refer to a list of “fully vetted and permitted professional animal care facilities in the region to determine which can meet the case needs.”

Matthew Martin, assistant special agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said the partnership will help authorities “free up time and follow up on investigative leads while they’re still fresh.”

Colonel, a scarlet macaw, was confiscated at Los Angeles International Airport in 2014 and brought to the Los Angeles Zoo.

(Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

Wildlife trafficking is often thought of as something that happens in “far away places like Africa, Asia or Australia,” said Dan Ashe, president of the Assn. of Zoos and Aquariums, “but it’s very much an American problem as well.”

Southern California is an epicenter for the trafficking of wild animals, often smuggled for the illegal pet trade and regularly moved through ports of entry, he said.

For at least the last decade, Martin said, U.S. native turtles have been exported overseas.

At the southern border, he said, the Fish and Wildlife Service has intercepted a lot of trafficked sea cucumbers and swim bladders from totoaba fish, an endangered species since 1979.

A small bird with white feathers

Star, a Bali myna, was one of eight survivors from 93 birds confiscated in 2017 and brought to the Los Angeles Zoo.

(Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

At ports of entry or exit such as Los Angeles International Airport or a U.S. Postal Service facility, Fish and Wildlife officials search incoming shipments of permitted live animals to ensure there isn’t any activity of illegal trade. Inspectors check labels and open boxes, and if the shipment matches its documentation, it is sealed up and ready to be transported to its destination. For extra assurance, a trained K-9 is also on scene to sniff out any smuggled animals.

In 2022, Fish and Wildlife special agents and the service’s law enforcement partners investigated more than 10,000 wildlife trafficking cases and collected more than $11 million in criminal penalties.

“Illegal wildlife trafficking, whether driven by profit or personal gain, has devastating consequences for our environment and biodiversity,” said Verret of the Los Angeles Zoo.

The global issue puts countless species on the brink of extinction and affects entire ecosystems, she said, and officials are hopeful that the Southern California Wildlife Confiscations Network will help them focus on stamping out the illegal trade.

From 2015 to 2019, the Assn. of Zoos and Aquariums noted, federal authorities had 834 cases of live wildlife that was refused clearance, including 48,793 individual animals and plants that required placement. Los Angeles led the nation in number of cases, with 177.

  • Aperture Pet & Life and the Florida Aquarium Partner on Collection of Merchandise to Support Vital Coral Conservation Efforts

Aperture Pet & Life and the Florida Aquarium Partner on Collection of Merchandise to Support Vital Coral Conservation Efforts

Aperture Pet & Life, the integrated company for some of the largest brands in the aquatics industry, including Bulk Reef Supply, Neptune Systems, EcoTech Marine and AquaIllumination, is pleased to announce an expanded partnership with The Florida Aquarium

During the month of July, Aperture brand Bulk Reef Supply (BRS) and The Florida Aquarium have joined forces to offer a collection of co-branded merchandise with 100% of the net proceeds being donated to The Florida Aquarium. These funds will be utilized to support the aquarium’s vital conservation efforts, specifically focused on the protection and conservation of Florida’s critically endangered coral reef. This collection includes plushies and t-shirts featuring Mr. Chili, the BRS mascot who is a coral polyp.

This collaboration between Aperture and The Florida Aquarium not only strengthens their long-standing relationship, but it also contributes to a significant cause.

“We are excited to support the critical coral conservation efforts of The Florida Aquarium. Their work is nothing short of extraordinary, fueled by a team with passion and relentless dedication to addressing the coral crisis,” said Natalie Strahan, Chief Executive Officer for Aperture Pet & Life. “They are making a significant impact for our ocean’s futures and generations to come. Therefore, we are proud to honor The Florida Aquarium researchers, scientists and team members by Mr. Chili becoming Super Chili for the month of July in recognition of their work and as a reflection of them being superheroes in our eyes.”

Super Chili will also assume the part-time role of a coral conservation mascot for The Florida Aquarium. He will act as a representative for reef education and conservation, particularly focused on educating children. As a coral polyp himself, the hope is he will help inspire the next generation to learn about our coral reefs and the important role they play for our oceans and our planet.

“The more we understand and have connection to something, the more we care about it. This unique partnership allows us to leverage the benefit of how toys like plushies can evoke imagination and compassion, which can ultimately be a catalyst for developing a sense of environmental responsibility and empathy toward the natural world,” said Roger Germann, president & Chief Executive Officer of The Florida Aquarium. “Super Chili has the strength to save coral reefs, one coral at a time, but when his superpower is fueled by millions of children and adults who care about coral enough to make positive environmental choices – now that’s hero’s work.”

Corals support 25% of all ocean life, are the ecosystem engineers that build physical homes for animals, protect up to 90% of our coastlines from damage, and provide food and economic benefit to hundreds of millions of people.

The scientists at The Florida Aquarium have been tirelessly dedicated to addressing the coral crisis. Their focus lies in protecting coral species that are on the brink of extinction in the wild, increasing coral reproduction rates, and advancing overall coral health. Through their relentless efforts, these coral scientists have made coral sexual reproduction history many times with their work, which has been vital to the restoration of the third largest barrier reef in the world, Florida’s Coral Reef.

In August 2019, The Florida Aquarium, in partnership with the Horniman Museum and Gardens, became the first to successfully spawn critically endangered pillar coral in a laboratory. In 2023, the first juvenile pillar corals born and raised in aquariums were returned to the ocean for the first time.

“We could not be prouder or more humbled to partner with the incredible team at The Florida Aquarium on their historic and revolutionary work,” said Strahan. “There has never been a more important time than now to support their research and help children and adults alike become a part of the mission to conserve our coral reefs.”

By supporting The Florida Aquarium’s conservation work, the collaboration between Aperture brand BRS and the Aquarium aims to make a tangible impact in safeguarding the fragile coral ecosystems. The funds generated from the co-branded merchandise will go directly toward supporting research, restoration projects, and education initiatives focused on coral reef preservation. This partnership not only fosters a deeper understanding of the importance of coral conservation but also provides crucial resources for sustaining these irreplaceable marine habitats for generations to come.

Aperture brands, including BRS, reach and represent one of the largest home aquarist communities in the world. In a recent survey of BRS customers, 90% indicated that contributing to coral conservation efforts is important to them. This partnership also provides this key community a new opportunity to give back to something they are deeply passionate about.

“We are grateful for our amazing partners at Aperture Pet & Life and Bulk Reef Supply and bolstered by their commitment to saving coral reefs, supporting our coral conservation efforts through philanthropy and outreach, and of course, sending Super Chili to join us in the global fight,” said Germann.

Aperture Launches the Most Versatile Aquarium Light in Company’s History

New Aquaillumination Blade in multiple sizes and mounting options for saltwater and freshwater aquariums

    Press Release

    Jan 4, 2023

Aperture Pet & Life, the integrated company for some of the largest brands in the aquatics industry, including Bulk Reef Supply, Neptune Systems, EcoTech Marine and AquaIllumination, is pleased to announce the newest light addition to their highly innovative line up of some of the most trusted products by aquarists around the world.

The new light series, Aquaillumination Blade, is the most versatile light ever launched under the EcoTech house of brands. Designed as a strip light. Blade can be paired with other lights and mounted in infinite configurations to best meet aquariums of all sizes and needs. This allows aquarists to choose the right size and spectrum for their tank by using Blade as a standalone light, through mixing and matching multiple Blades or by pairing with other lights already over their aquarium.

Blade is available in four different spectrums:

    • Refugium: horticultural-based spectrum designed for growing green plants
    • Grow: marine spectrum mix that is designed around maximizing output in the photosynthetic peaks used by Coral to grow and produce nutrients
    • Glow: marine spectrum mix that is designed to maximize fluorescence in coral
    • Freshwater: spectrum designed to maximize output for freshwater aquariums and/or house plants

“We couldn’t be more pleased with our new Blade light lineup. We firmly believe that this is by far the most versatile aquarium lighting solution we have ever made, if not the most flexible lighting platform available to hobbyists, period,” said Patrick Clasen, President of EcoTech. “Using Blades alone, in multiples, as a Grow and Glow mix, as a supplement to Hydra or Radion pendant lights or over their freshwater tanks, opens up a world of possibility.”

Blade lights have on-light control and full control and programmable scheduling capabilities through the AquaIllumination MyAI or the Mobius app, both available in the Apple App store or from Google Play.

The Blade light is available in 7 sizes for Grow, Glow and Freshwater: 12.1in(30.74cm), 21.1in(53.59cm), 30.1in(76.45cm), 39.1in(99.31cm), 48.1in(122.17cm), 57.1in(145.03cm), 66.1in(167.89cm). The Refugium is available in 12.1in(30.74cm).

For more information or to purchase Blade, retailers can reach out to their Aperture sales representative or visit the Aperture wholesale portal. Aquarists can purchase Blade at their favorite local fish store or online retailer.
