The Intellivision Amico Console Is Somehow Still Not Dead

    [ad_1]

We bet you’d forgotten about sort-of-Intellivision’s disastrous attempted console, the Amico. Revealed in 2020 as this super-cheap, super-exclusive, family-friendly gaming machine, replete with exclusive $8 games, the following years saw the business go through clusterfuck after clusterfuck. And yet it seems it’s still somehow not dead. There’s an attempt to rejuvenate interest in the wholly undesirable project by releasing an app for your telephones. Not one telephone, no. You need at least two. Oh, and wait until you see the prices. Let us take you through the whole sorry tale.

The Amico, much like the also-disastrous but at least briefly extant Ouya, is an Android-driven console that was hoping to surf on people’s nostalgia for the late ‘70s Mattel home gaming device. Its initial fundraising effort saw it raise an astonishing $11.5 million. But since then, it’s been one colossal mess after another.

A year after the initial announcement, the Amico’s intended price had increased by 50%, its game prices were up to $20 and no longer exclusive. In the meantime, Intellivision’s former CEO, Tommy Tallarico—who bought the rights to the name Intellivision and its games in 2018—had been very online in increasingly unhelpful ways, including following a range of white supremacists on Twitter.

This non-releasing of a console reached what appeared its nadir in October 2021, when the company tried selling NFTs (remember them?) alongside physical RFIDs of games that didn’t exist for a console that didn’t exist. By this point, those game prices had increased from the proposed $8 to $150 for eight. And you couldn’t play them.

Jump almost a year onward to June 2022 and everything got a whole lot worse. In February, GI.biz reported that the shambling zombie corpse of the once-loved Intellivision brand was in big financial trouble, saying it was going to struggle to make it to July. In June, emails were sent out to those who had pre-ordered the ethereal machine and were increasingly frustrated about the lack of news: in this it was revealed that another attempt at fundraising had gone (not unexpectedly) disastrously, falling short of an attempted $5 million by $4,940,000.

This came with “significant” job losses, attempts to hawk the IP elsewhere, and remarks about how they were struggling to keep up with an “influx” of refund requests.

Read More: Intellivision Is Selling NFT Games For A Console That Ain’t Even Out Yet

Since then, both Intellivision and Tallarico have been much more quiet. Neither’s X accounts have updated since April 2022—for the latter, that’s likely an advantage, but for the former it’s not a great look. The official website for the “console” has had one news update since October 2021, which happened in May this year. This took the form of a screed from new CEO, Phil Adam, which instead of saying, “Here’s why we haven’t released the console we pretended to unbox last year,” rather opted for meandering nonsense about being “in the business of creating a living room experience that brings people of various ages together in group play…”

The post went on to claim the imminent announcement of a “string of new partnerships,” once again suggesting they were just about to—any time now—start licensing out the IP. No further information on that has appeared.

Extraordinarily, the post about having still failed to ship a hardware console went on to say, “We cannot solely be dependent on a traditional hardware console business model.” And then as if that weren’t enough, these incredible words appeared:

We want to assure our fans that shipping a console remains a part of our product strategy.

For “fans” one can presumably read, “the few people who haven’t demanded a refund.” It’s hard to imagine anyone among them who wasn’t thrilled to read that getting the thing they’d paid for would remain “part of” the company’s plans.

It’s in this post that Adam first reveals the intention to “bring the Amico experience to other hardware platforms, starting with mobile devices.”

“Amico Home,” he said, “will dramatically reduce the hardware footprint needed to enjoy Amico games.” No shit! Putting out Android games on Android phones sure doesn’t require a whole other console, although does perhaps somewhat fall short on the promise of its bespoke controllers and family-focused living room euphoria. (Although that footprint isn’t as reduced as you might think…)

“Those who supported Intellivision early on,” he said, “helped set the foundation for all that we have been able to achieve.” Sadly he didn’t find room to list exactly what those achievements might be.

What’s Amico Home like to use?

And now we can bring things entirely back to where we started, and an update on the Amico’s fundraising page that appeared on Tuesday, November 22. (Thanks Brandon Sheffield!) Not shared on the official site, nor on social media, Phil Adam brings the news that the mobile app he promised was arriving in “the coming weeks” some six months ago is finally here! Sort of! In beta!

Leap to your non-Apple (for now) electronic telephone and you can now install Amico Home (Early Access) for Android. I just did, and let me tell you, this is one janky piece of crap. Before I could even click on one of the plain-text options, a screen called “TIPS AND TRIVIA – Cool things you might like to know” appeared to inform me that “Amico Home requires a separate controller per player to operate. Use mobile devices running the free Amico Controller app or real Amico controllers.” And then stayed there. Impossible to close.

Because, seriously, to use this you need another Android phone to act as a controller. I swear to God, I did this for you. And to be fair, it hooked the two phones together without even having to ask for permissions or run any setup. (Is that good? I’m really not sure.) However, I cannot tell you how stupid it feels to control the screen on one phone by moving a virtual analogue stick on another phone. Nor how unbelievably frustrating and fiddly those controls are.

    Image: Intellivision

According to the update page, a whopping two games are available to play right now, with an eye-watering two more due soon. Yes, that’s four games. Currently available are Astrosmash and Missile Command, which yes, you’re right, are original Intellivision games from 1981 and 1980 respectively, with reworked graphics that look like freeware from around 1998. And of course, both are free to play during this early beta perio… HAHAHA! I was joking! THEY’RE $15 EACH!

Sorry, but that was my limit. I’d take a photograph of how stupid it looked spread across two mobile phones on my desk, but I’m already using two mobile phones so don’t have a camera to hand.

Astonishingly, this increasingly embarrassing attempt to keep their nightmare alive has driven someone to the point of writing these words:

For many households that already have a family tablet, Amico HomeTM is an affordable way to enjoy family gaming entertainment. We are delighted to invite you to join the family gaming revolution today with Amico HomeTM!

This is, to be clear, bullshit. It’s not affordable to create a system where you need to have a tablet and a telephone in order to be able to play a port of a 40-year-old arcade game, and then charge fifteen bucks per game! If you’re a family with a tablet, I’ve good news for you: the Google Play Store has fifty squillion free games you can download and enjoy right now, and you don’t even need to use your toaster and fridge to control them.

(Those who bought into the NFT idiocy will be able to redeem those RFID chips against games for this clumsy app nonsense, you know, when those games are released.)

But there’s good news! According to this rambling update, “The release of Amico HomeTM [sic] puts us on a better footing to attract such investment or to eventually fund manufacturing from the proceeds of Amico HomeTM game sales.”

Oh my god, no. No it won’t. This bewilderingly idiotic two-phone system for playing four-decade-old games at $15 a pop, that isn’t being advertised anywhere outside of an update to the remaining marks who backed the project (who should get the games free anyway), isn’t going to make any money at all. This company has managed to make releasing Android games on Android phones into something unmanageably complicated, expensive and unpleasant. It’s going to be a disaster. As has every other aspect of this years-long debacle.

Oh, you can still “pre-order” an Amico! Incredibly, it’s—um—free to do so. Although when it definitely comes out, it’ll now be $290 with one controller (and presumably a bit empty space on top) or $340 with two. I wouldn’t!

We have, of course, reached out to Amico, and will be delighted to update when they get back to us.

Elon Musk Finally Files Threatened Suit Over White Supremacist Ads Placement On X/Twitter

    [ad_1]

It wasn’t exactly the “split second” the courthouse opened this morning as promised, but Elon Musk has now filed his self-described “thermonuclear lawsuit” against Media Matters.

“Defendant Media Matters for America is a self-proclaimed media watchdog that decided it would not let the truth get in the way of a story it wanted to publish about X Corp,” proclaimed the jury trial seeking complaint filed in federal court in Texas.  Musk and X’s three-claim disparagement suit wants a preliminary and permanent injunction against Media Matters’ report on the alleged placing of corporate ads next “Pro-Nazi Content.”

Enraged about studies by the media watchdog that claimed X/Twitter is placing the advertising of major brands and big corporations aside such vile material, Musk lashed put with his legal threats late on November 17. More fallout from the Media Matters study saw Apple, Disney Comcast, Paramount Global, Warner Bros Discovery and others suspend their ad buys and presence on X/Twitter.

Condemned by the White House last week for his additional amplification of antisemitic screech, Musk clearly wanted to shift the narrative. First, as more deep pocket advertisers jumped ship, the Tesla/Space X boss took to his social media platform to lash out “Many of the largest advertisers are the greatest oppressors of your right to free speech.” Then he swore to take down Media Matters and their so-called “fraudulent attack on our company” while kind of confirming the truth of their research at the same time.

After Musk threatened late last week to unleash his lawsuit first thing Monday, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone took a swing back. “Far from the free speech advocate he claims to be, Musk is a bully who threatens meritless lawsuits in an attempt to silence reporting that he even confirmed is accurate,” Carusone said. “Musk admitted the ads at issue ran alongside the pro-Nazi content we identified. If he does sue us, we will win.”

Today, Carusone added: “Elon Musk has spent the last few days making meritless legal threats, elevating bizarre conspiracy theories, and lobbing vicious personal attacks against his ‘enemies’ online. Even if he does not follow through with his threat to sue, the volatility of actions reinforce why major brands are rightly skittish of partnering with X. We are going to continue our work undeterred. If he sues us, we will win.”

Now that an actual suit has been filed, Musk will have to hand over material on the platform’s algorithms internal ad decision and more, a pulling back of the curtain that could prove to be the make-or-break in the matter.

Coming off a weekend that also saw yet another Space X launch end in an explosion, Musk took to X/Twitter repeatedly this morning to take another pre-litigation swipe at Media Matters:

This is not Musk’s first lawsuit against a media watchdog.

Last summer, X/Twitter sued the Center for Countering Digital Hate for defamation over the group’s reports on the platform’s lack of hate speech guardrails. On November 16, the group filed a motion to dismiss and an anti-SLAPP motion last week, arguing that Musk’s platform had “ginned up baseless claims” in taking issue with how CCDH gathered its data.

“Apparently unhappy with how it is faring in the marketplace of ideas, X Corp. asks this court to shut that marketplace down—to punish the CCDH Defendants for their speech and to silence others who might speak up about X Corp. in the future,” the group’s attorneys wrote. “Thus, X Corp. seeks ‘at least tens of millions of dollars’ in damages based on how advertisers reacted to what the CCDH Defendants said about X Corp. in their public reports.”

The erratic Musk has previously threatened legal action against other critics over the years, but didn’t follow through. In September, when the Anti-Defamation League sharply criticized X/Twitter for increasing antisemitic and other hate speech, Musk promised to sue – but never did. The South African billionaire blamed ADL for an advertising decline of 60% on the social media platform he bought for over $44 billion last year.

Musk came up again Monday at the White House, which reiterated its criticism of his antisemitic retweet:

  • iPhone 16 to use graphene heat sink to solve overheating issues

iPhone 16 to use graphene heat sink to solve overheating issues

    [ad_1]

iPhone 15 Pro had an overheating problem

Users complained of overheating iPhone 15 models shortly after release, which Apple fixed via software, but the iPhone 16 is rumored to have a hardware solution, too.

Select iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models could overheat to the point of being uncomfortable to hold, at least until iOS 17.0.3. Apple blamed these conditions on poorly optimized software and issued a software fix, but more effective cooling may also help.

The iPhone 15 is already here and can’t get a hardware change mid-cycle, but X user @KosutamiSan says Apple is working on a solution for iPhone 16. The company could switch to a graphene heat sink and a metal battery case to promote better heat transfer.

The iPhone is such a tiny object that there isn’t much space for anything, especially thick or heavy heat sinks. Graphene is an excellent material for a heat sink because it has ten times more thermal conductivity than copper.

The iPhone has no fan, so heat has to be dissipated through the device frame into the air using passive heat transfer. Heat sinks do precisely what the name implies, they remove heat from undesirable areas by having a more efficient thermal conduction value than the materials around it.

Graphene would perform better than the existing cooling mechanism, thus allowing the iPhone to deal with more heat more efficiently.

Apple has investigated many ways to cool the iPhone down but hasn’t changed much beyond using different heat sinks. Ming-Chi Kuo suggested Apple could use vapor chambers at one point, while a patent pointed to magnets as a solution.

However, those options are cost-prohibitive and require radical design changes. Graphene may be the perfect solution to keep the iPhone 16 from overheating if the rumor proves true.

Kosutami is a known leaker that collects design validation test products and other such pre-production items. The leaker has a short history with accurate leaks like USB-C components for iPhone 15, but also some misses like with a supposed iPhone 15 Pro Thunderbolt cable. So, we’re rating this leak as possible.

  • What Canadian investors can learn from the BlackBerry story – MoneySense

What Canadian investors can learn from the BlackBerry story – MoneySense

    [ad_1]

    1. Starting and scaling a global tech leader from Canada is hard

“We are a risk-averse country,” says McNish. “We are dominated by large corporations, whether in banking or technology or real estate.” BlackBerry—then known as Research in Motion, and RIM for short—only got noticed in Canada after it was backed by American investors and banks, and lauded by the likes of Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Dell and GE’s Jack Welch.

“That is something that as a country and as a marketplace we should fix,” she says. But until that happens, be realistic about how Canadian tech companies stack up against foreign, especially American, competitors that come by this support more easily.

    2. First-mover advantage is worth less than you’d think

Photo of author Jacquie McNish by Fred Lum

BlackBerry is credited with inventing the now ubiquitous smartphone product category, but many other tech firms had already tried to merge cellphone technology and internet capabilities by the time it came along.

“For 10 years prior to that, the landscape was littered with failures by major companies. Even Apple in ’93 tried to do a message pad that would be transmitted over a network,” McNish says.

BlackBerry’s breakthrough came from finding ways to conserve network bandwidth. When wireless carriers instead switched to selling data, and bandwidth exploded, that advantage became moot. The new competition, Apple’s iPhone, promised pictures, maps, video—“things that BlackBerry said was an impossibility,” she says.

    3. Corporate partnerships are key

BlackBerry’s first big break came in 1997. “It had basically been blessed by a major telephone carrier in the United States as the future” when it introduced the first BlackBerry device, a pager called the Bullfrog, McNish notes. Apart from its appeal to consumers, BlackBerry offered carriers a mutually beneficial business proposition. The company’s market position began to crumble when it took those partnerships for granted.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, McNish says, “he also brought on stage a very important individual who was an AT&T senior executive who was offering billions of dollars for the exclusive right to sell the Apple iPhone for a number of years” as well as committing to upgrade the company’s network to handle the soaring volume of data that entailed.

    4. Beware cognitive dissonance

Apple’s announcement proved a turning point. Jobs, who had earlier dismissed the idea of making a smartphone, tacitly acknowledged the market opportunity that BlackBerry opened up. “And then the second critical moment was when people started asking Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, the two senior people at the top of BlackBerry, were they worried about it,” McNish says. “They brushed it off.”

Amazon and Walmart.com are selling the Apple AirTag 4-pack on sale for $76.88.

This is near the lowest price we’ve ever seen on AirTags. Personally, I bought a 4-pack a number of weeks ago at $89.99 before heading out for some travel. A lot of people find AirTags useful for tracking luggage and a host of other uses. These should be eligible for the extended holiday return window through January 31, 2024.

10 editor-tested travel gifts for frequent fliers in 2023 | TechCrunch

    [ad_1]

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been traveling a lot this year. In fact, I’ve been back to my 2019 levels of travel, which has been a breath of fresh air after being pandemic-grounded for a couple of years.

I like to return to this list every time TechCrunch does a gift guide. It’s a good opportunity for me to assess whether I’m packing as efficiently as I could be. I would like to think I’ve got this thing down to a science, but the beauty of being a hardware editor is that there’s always new stuff to try out.

If you’ve got a frequent flier in your life, here’s a list of travel gifts running the gamut from less than $20 to more than $1,000. There’s something on here for every kind of tech-obsessed travel.

This article contains links to affiliate partners where available. When you buy through these links, TechCrunch may earn an affiliate commission.

    Tom Bihn Synik 30 Backpack

    Price: $330 at Tom Bihn

If you’ve seen me in the past several years, odds are my Timbuk2 backpack was close by. I still love the thing (the ability to expand its internal volume is indispensable), but this seemed like a good time to shake things up and try something new.

Tom Bihn is one of those companies I’ve heard about over the years, but whose products I’d never actually tried. The 51-year-old firm seems to have cultivated a similarly devoted following as fellow Seattle brand Filson (if you ever see Devin Coldewey in person, ask him his thoughts on waxed canvas). Neither are exactly a household name outside the PNW, but those who know them seem to love them.

When I told CEO Cindy Guan that I was working on a travel roundup, she recommended the Synik 30, and I think that’s the right call for my needs. For starters, it can fit laptops up to 16 inches — ideal for the 15-inch MacBook Air that’s been my travel companion for the past couple of years.

Beyond that, it’s just an all-around well-considered and good-looking product (digging the deep Wilderness Ballistic green color) with ample space, a ton of pockets and removable/customizable elements. It’s not cheap, though. The company offers some more affordable options, but the Synik is plenty durable and suitable for both travel and daily commutes, so you’ll get plenty of mileage out of the bag. It’s easily one of the best backpacks I’ve ever tested.

    Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe

    Price: $150 at Anker

Anker products are generally a safe bet. They’re high quality, without the same premium tax as a company like Mophie. The brand has also been innovating form factors quite a bit. This 3-in-1 charger is wildly compact and well suited for suitcases. It ships as a cube that folds out to charge a MagSafe compatible iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods all at the same time.

The system supports 15 watt fast charging, while the MagSafe pad features an adjustable angle, so it can double duty in standby mode. No need to rely on the hotel alarm clock with this sitting next to your bedside.

At $150, it’s a good deal more than just buying a USB cable and wall adapter, but you’re effectively getting three chargers in one portable form factor that will free up a lot of travel space.

    Apple MacBook Air 15-inch

    Price: $1,299 at Amazon

    Apple 15-inch M2 MacBook Air

The M1 and M2 chips have been such massive gamechangers for travel. When I’m feeling particularly nostalgic for my older struggles, I’ll recall my days liveblogging for Engadget, when I had to bring along a massive power bank to make sure my laptop would survive the whole thing.

These days, however, I fly cross country without regard for charging up my Air. Let’s be honest, the outlets below the seats on Delta are a real crapshoot anyway. This is the laptop we always wanted the Air to be, but constraints on processing power and battery life always fell short.

As gifts go, it’s an expensive one. But more so than any other item on this list, this is an investment. If you’re not able to sleep on planes, at least you can finally get some real work done.

    Ozlo Sleepbuds

    Price: $229 at Indiegogo

COO Brian Mulcahey models Ozlo's Sleepbuds

I’m going to do a thing I don’t usually do and recommend a product I’ve not had the chance to try yet. I’ve got some faith in the team behind the Ozlo Sleepbuds, given their pedigrees that played a critical role in the creation of Bose’s version. The company is also determined to fix some of the original ‘buds biggest issues, including their inability to stream music.

I always felt like Bose’s two swings at the product fell just short of greatness. That’s a bummer, as I’m a historically terrible sleeper and I really wanted to like the things. Attempting to sleep in regular earbuds and over-ear headphones is a bit of a nightmare scenario, so I’m really pulling for the product to be as good as it sounds.

We’ll keep you updated on the inevitable review. Meantime, you can preorder a pair over on Indiegogo for $229 — that’s $20 less than the Bose Sleepbuds II. How much are you willing to pay for a better night’s sleep?

    Nintendo Switch Lite

    Price: $199 at Amazon

    Nintendo Switch Lite

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild probably saved me from losing my mind during the early months of the pandemic. Tears of the Kingdom had a similar effect on me earlier this year. The Switch Lite is a great little portable system that’s ideal for long plane rides and during downtime at the hotel.

The biggest differences between the Lite and normal Switch are size, weight and a lack of TV connectivity. Because of the latter, the Joycons aren’t removable. If you anticipate the console spending a lot of time on the road, those sacrifices are more than worth it — not to mention the lower price point.

The Switch is getting a bit long in the tooth, six years after its release, but Nintendo has built a fantastic library of games in that time — not to mention access to older content through Switch Online. My biggest complaint remains the battery life, so definitely remember to pack that USB-C cable and turn on Airplane mode when able.

    Apple AirTags 4-Pack

    Price: $99 at Amazon

My advice? Buy the four-pack. I regret not doing that initially. I’ve since added AirTags to my keychain, wallet and luggage tag. As an almost comically absent-minded person with a lot of anxiety (great combination!), these things are worth the price for the peace of mind alone. Heck, I used the alert sound to find my keys inside my messy apartment about an hour ago.

If you’re an Android user, there are also some great alternatives out there from Tile, Chipolo and Samsung. They’re all great, relatively low-cost gifts that nearly anyone can find a use for — frequent travelers, in particular.

    Amazon Kindle Scribe

    Price: $340 at Amazon

The original Kindle DX was a bit of a dud. I suspect tying a product’s successes to people’s desire to read newspapers in their original format via slow-loading e ink didn’t capture the public’s imagination as Amazon had hoped. Since then, there’s been very little in the way of deviation from the standard six-inch screen.

The 10.2-inch display was reason enough to make me check out the Scribe. I really like the larger format, and the big Kindle has been a constant fixture in my backpack ever since. The whole experience has opened up quite a bit with the arrival of Send-to-Kindle, a browser-based feature that let’s you drag and drop content that will be sent to your device the next time you fire it up.

Of course, the real selling point — as the name implies — is the ability to scrawl notes on the device. It’s the first Kindle to sport that functionality. I’ve been reminded the hard way that my typing is much smoother than my script, but the on-device handwriting detection is mercifully forgiving.

    A year of Clear

    Price: $189

Long lines at the United Airlines ticket counter at Denver International Airport in 2015

Photo by Andy Cross/The Denver Post via Getty Images

Turns out air travel can actually be pretty nice — if you’re willing to pay. If you find yourself in several airports a year, this is one upgrade that can definitely justify the cost. A Clear pass will help you avoid the often hellish security lines at airports. It even gives you a leg up on folks with TSA Pre-Check.

It’s a great gift idea because it’s the kind of thing a lot of people would never think to buy for themselves. Once you’ve got it, however, it’s hard to know how you lived that long without it.

    Beshon Flat Plug Power Strip

    Price: $18 at Amazon

Several years ago, I started packing a miniature power strip, and it’s been a game changer. While it’s true that more and more hotels are including in-room ports, you never know what you’re going to find until you open that door. Save yourself the grief of swapping plugs all night with one of these.

There are a ton of options out there — mostly at pretty good prices. I like this one, because it’s nice and compact, while packing in three outlets, a pair of USB-C ports and one USB-A, because you never know. It’s also a bonus for international travel, because you only need a single adapter.

    Belkin iPhone Camera Mount

    Price: $30 at Amazon

    Apple Belkin Continuity Camera

Apple Belkin Continuity Camera macOS. Image Credits: Brian Heater

My newest addition to the list has been another gamechanger for me. While it’s true that Apple improved its laptop cameras a couple of years back, the video quality still leaves much to be desired. If you have a Mac and an iPhone, the Continuity Camera feature breaks the game wide open.

I’ve been using the iPhone 15 Pro Max for work calls on the road, and nothing short of hooking up a DSLR to your computer comes close. This MagSafe accessory is a cheap addition to the arsenal that you can keep in your backpack and forget until you need it.

  • The Family Plan Release Date Set for Mark Wahlberg-Led Apple TV+ Movie

The Family Plan Release Date Set for Mark Wahlberg-Led Apple TV+ Movie

    [ad_1]

Apple Original Films announced a release date for The Family Plan on Wednesday, revealing when the action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan is set to arrive.

The Family Plan release date has been set for December 15, 2023, when the film will premiere on AppleTV+. Alongside the official announcement of the release date, Apple has also released a new poster for the film, showcasing the starring cast of Wahlberg, Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Saïd Taghmaoui, Maggie Q, Ciarán Hinds.

The Family Plan will be directed by Simon Cellan Jones, who is set to reunite with Wahlberg after working together on the upcoming Arthur the King film. The project is written by David Coggeshall.

Check out the new The Family Plan key art below:

What do we know about The Family Plan?

“Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story,” reads the official synopsis for the film. “Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.”

Wahlberg is clearly no stranger to the action genre as he previous starred in The Big Hit, The Corruptor, Planet of the Apes, The Italian Job, Max Payne, and more. He was last seen in Sony’s live-action adaptation of Uncharted and in the Netflix comedy Me Time with Kevin Heart.

The Family Plan is produced by Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson through their Municipal Pictures banner along with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance.

Update 11/1/23: Deal is back through 11/30/2023. It’s a bit more interesting now that PYB only offers a max of 1.25%.

Update 10/15/22: Deal is back and valid through 12/31/22.

Update 5/3/22: Deal is back through May 31, 2022. They increased the Freedom tier from 5% bonus to 10% bonus (updated below).

Update 11/1/21: Deal is back and valid 11/01/2021 – 11/30/2021

    The Offer

Direct Link to offer (shows in the Ultimate Rewards login)

    • Chase released today a new redemption option of Ultimate Rewards points to get Apple merchandise through the Chase portal with bonus value of up to 50% more on the points.

The bonus is broken down as follows:

    • Sapphire Reserve: 50% bonus
    • Sapphire Preferred: 25% bonus
    • INK Preferred/Plus: 25% bonus
    • Freedom cards and the no-fee Sapphire card: 10% bonus (20% on Airpods)
    • Ink Cash/Unlimited: 10% bonus (20% on Airpods)

Instead of each point being worth 1 cent, it can now worth up to 1.5 cents. For example, if you buy a $600 Apple Watch through the Ultimate Rewards portal, it would typically cost 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points, but it’ll now cost just 40,000 points for Sapphire Reserve cardholders.

    Our Verdict

For most people, using the Pay Yourself Back feature will make more sense to get the same 1.5%/1.25% value assuming you have enough dining/Airbnb spend to use up your points on. But overall it’s still nice to have an additional option and could be useful for someone with an Apple purchase to make. It also could be a little bonus for Freedom cardholders to bump up their earnings by 10%.

  • India-made iPhones to top 20% of global shipments by 2024, Kuo says | TechCrunch

India-made iPhones to top 20% of global shipments by 2024, Kuo says | TechCrunch

    [ad_1]

The India-made iPhone is projected to account for 12% to 14% of Apple’s global iPhone shipments in 2023, according to a leading analyst, who further anticipates that the importance of the South Asian market to Apple will notably rise in the coming year.

Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities said Wednesday that Apple, contingent on favorable conditions, will elevate its India-made iPhone shipments to constitute 20% to 25% of its global total by next year. Kuo’s projection aligns with an earlier forecast from JPMorgan last year, which suggested that Apple might shift 25% of its total iPhone production to India by 2025.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Foxconn currently “owns” between 75% and 80% of India’s iPhone production capacity, said Kuo, who has earned a reputation for his in-depth understanding of Apple’s supply chain and for revealing numerous details not yet public. This dynamic is expected to shift somewhat as the Indian conglomerate Tata Group begins iPhone manufacturing at the Wistron production line it has acquired in the country.

“By making India’s Tata an iPhone assembler (already acquired Wistron’s iPhone production lines in India), Apple can strengthen its relationship with the Indian government. This move will benefit future sales of iPhones and other products in India and is critical to Apple’s growth over the next decade,” he said.

India is increasingly becoming a key market for Apple. The iPhone maker this year opened its first two official India retail stores and is eyeing expanding its services portfolio in the country. It has engaged with lender HDFC Bank to explore the launch of Apple Pay in India, TechCrunch earlier reported.

Apple, which began assembling iPhones in India about five years ago, is also beginning to court more Indians to purchase its handsets. Between July and September, the Cupertino firm shipped more than 2.5 million iPhone units in India, research firm Counterpoint said Wednesday, calling it Apple’s best ever quarter in the South Asian market.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is increasingly courting major companies to expand their businesses in India. Google said last month that it will soon begin manufacturing the Pixel smartphone lineup in India.

New Delhi is actively offering financial incentives worth billions of dollars to attract global companies to establish manufacturing operations in India. The incentives come at a time when many firms — including Apple — are looking to cut their reliance on China for manufacturing their devices in what analysts often call “China + 1” strategy.

“Mobile manufacturing was practically negligible [in India] nine years back,” India’s IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at an event last month. “Our Prime Minister’s vision of Make-in-India and Digital India, the entire thing has gotten translated to real action on the ground, and today we have close to $44 billion in mobile manufacturing and exports of mobile phones is at $11 billion. It’s generating huge employment.”

Kuo also expects Apple to commence the introductory production for the standard iPhone 17, expected to launch in the second half of 2025, in India in the second half of next year. According to Kuo, this will mark Apple’s first instance of initiating the development of a new iPhone model outside China. The standard iPhone was selected for its less complex design development, thereby minimizing design risk, he said.

Kuo estimates that by 2024, Foxconn’s production capacity in Zhengzhou and Taiyuan, China, will decline by 35% to 45% and 75% to 85%, respectively.

“In addition to expanding production in India, Luxshare’s rapid increase in iPhone order allocation and improvements in production line automation are also the main reasons for the production scale reduction,” he wrote.

  • The New Apple MacBook Pro Offers More Bang for Fewer Bucks

The New Apple MacBook Pro Offers More Bang for Fewer Bucks

    [ad_1]

Having used plenty of both new MacBook Pros in recent years, we’d say it’s worth spending the extra this time around. Not least because those new M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips carry some serious heft. Although they scale up in computing oomph from “monumental” to “frankly a bit much,” even the base level M3 chip that comes in the MacBook Pro 14-inch carries all the muscle of Arnie Schwarzenegger in his heyday. It’s capable of delivering the same CPU performance as 2020’s M1 chip while using half the power, and still offering up to 22 hours of battery life.

How this performance actually shows up in practice will depend on how you use these Pros, but keen gamers will be pleased by support for PS5-esque support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. This is a nice touch given the recent influx of titles such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, and Baldur’s Gate 3 for Mac. Another neat addition for Apple die-hards? The new Space Black colorway that looks delightfully sleek and has been formulated so it doesn’t pick up anywhere near as many fingerprints as before.

Both the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models are available to order today, and will begin shipping from next week onwards.

    iMac. Upgraded.

Since its sumptuous, pastel-colored redesign two years ago the iMac has been left in a casual sort of stasis befitting its status as “the fun one” in Apple’s computing roster. Much like that cousin you’ll see at Christmas, weddings, and the local dive bar, it’s here for a good time, not necessarily a work-filled one. Still, the addition of the all-new M3 means it’s more than capable of getting its hands dirty should the occasion arise. With a performance that’s twice as fast as the M1-powered iMac—and 2.5-times faster than Apple’s most popular Intel iMac of old, it’ll make mincemeat of Excel spreadsheets, presentation work, and the odd bit of social video editing.

In most other respects, this is the same computer you may have seen a couple of years ago. Its 24-inch screen is ample, bright, and packed full of color. Its six-speaker sound system is surprisingly immersive when used to fill out your workspace with the lilting tones of the latest Sufjan Stevens LP, and you get a mouse and Touch ID-enabled keyboard in the box that both match up to your chosen iMac colourway (the mint green is best, IMO). Annoyingly, Apple hasn’t taken the opportunity to redesign its oft-maligned Magic Mouse, which you’ll still have to charge via a Lightning port that’s on its belly. As such, you can’t charge and use the thing at the same time. In most other respects, the iMac with M3 silicon is as easygoing as you could reasonably hope for.

The new iMac is available to order today from $1,499 and starts shipping next week.

This story was originally published on British GQ with the headline,Apple’s new MacBook Pro gets a superfast upgrade (and a major price cut)”.
