    We just had a huge content drop on Apple Arcade earlier this week with Sonic Dream Team, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Puzzles and Dragons, and more hitting the service. Today (and as of a few days ago), many notable games on the service have gotten content updates and events. Let’s get into them. Outlanders adds four new characters in six new levels with today’s update bringing in Volume IV of Outlanders Chronicles: Home is Where the Heart Is. These levels are also available in sandbox mode. Football Manager 2024 Touch brings in AI improvements to team selection, quality of life features, match engine improvements, and more today. Zookeeper World has its Christmas 2023 event on right now to unlock themed rewards. The Disney SpellStruck Stickers and Sorcery event is on with Jack Skellington arriving with today’s update.

    Today’s update for MasterChef: Learn to Cook! from Tilting Point brings in the Christmas Baking Bash content with Chef Battle changes, new ingredient sets, special setups for the holidays, solo mode improvements, and more. Junkworld has gotten its first major update since launch bringing in new stages, new missions, new enemies, new music, and a lot more. Kingdom Rush Vengeance+ has gotten its recently announced new campaign and more today as well on Apple Arcade alongside the standalone game. Charrua Soccer adds in Santa with new daily challenges, Christmas gifts, and more. The final notable update of the week is What The Golf? bringing in the New Year New Golf update with new levels and fixes.

    After a bit of a delay, Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition () is now available on Apple Arcade worldwide. When Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition hit early access on PC and consoles including Nintendo Switch, I always assumed it would eventually hit mobile in some form. I didn’t expect Apple Arcade, but here we are, and this release is quite an interesting one. I say that because being an “Apple Arcade Original” means it supports all Apple platforms with no microtransactions or extra purchases required. In fact, Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition also includes the paid A Rift in Time expansion in its release from the start. I played Disney Dreamlight Valley on Switch, Steam Deck, and Xbox over time, but enjoyed it the most on Steam Deck. Let’s get into today’s updates. Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go () from SEGA adds three new songs and Sonic customization items today. The songs include Baka Mitai from Yakuza 5 and more.     Red Games Co’s Crayola Create and Play+ and Solitaire Stories both have new updates today. Crayola Create and Play+ brings in the holidays with the Creativity Countdown, Winter Wonderland, festive decorations, and more holiday-themed goodies in-game. Solitaire Stories adds in the Winter Thief story, Build a Snowman event, Decorate Cookies event, Light the Candles event, and more today. Patterned adds in more than 125 holiday patterns through Daily and Hidden puzzles. Gameloft’s SongPop Party brings in support for the January, February, and March content drops including the 80s, dance fever, and pop playlists. The final notable update is Warped Kart Racers with its overcharge modifier, new December multiplayer with winter and Christmas rewards.

The monthly Stitch. update is also live today with new Hoops added with improved animations. Angry Birds Reloaded has brought in new space power-ups, the ability to use power-ups in any episode, and new audio settings in its update from earlier this week. Finity brings in the new Tempo track for the Fall season, the ability to switch between landscape and portrait mode on iPad, and the ability to toggle the status bar on iOS and iPadOS in today’s update. The developer also says more updates are coming soon. The final update of the week is Kingdoms: Merge and Build bringing in Professor Feeble’s Observatory on level 20 with a new mini-game.

    This week, we had our big new release earlier in Football Manager 2024 Touch, but Apple has pushed out notable updates and events for a few games on the service. Let’s get into them. Jetpack Joyride 2 begins its Thanksgiving celebrations with a new skin and Challenge Mode added today. Tilting Point’s MasterChef: Learn to Cook! is also in the Thanksgiving mood with new mini-games, dishes like Pumpkin Fries and Turkey Nuggets, and more. Tilting Point’s other more recent Apple Arcade game also has an update with Cypher 007 () adding in the challenge mode and Desert Outfit inspired by Quantum of Solace. Cut the Rope 3 brings in 18 new levels today as well.

    The final notable update of the week is BorderLeap’s Illustrated adding in a new Woodland Adventure in a storybook style gallery with more coming in the future.     Sega and Sports Interactive have officially released multiple versions of Football Manager 2024 across platforms. On the mobile side of things, this year is more interesting than usual because Football Manager 2024 Touch is out now on Apple Arcade (like last year) and Nintendo Switch, but Football Manager 2024 Mobile is out now on iOS and Android through Netflix Games. This means you need a subscription of some form to play any version of Football Manager 2024 on mobile right now. On the Apple Arcade side of things, if you had Football Manager 2023 Touch installed, Football Manager 2024 Touch is an update to the existing app. The Football Manager 2024 Mobile release on Netflix is a separate app though.     ‘NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition’ Is Now Available on Apple Arcade – TouchArcade

    Hey there, sports fans! And video game sports fans! I know those are sometimes not the same thing. I know many fans of basketball, video or otherwise, have been hotly awaiting the arrival of the latest in 2K Sports’ long-running hoops series on Apple Arcade. Well, wait no longer, friends. NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition () is available right now in your App Store of choice. Go get that download started right now, and then come back here to have a little read about the details. It’s going to be a minute or two.

    Yes, you’ll need a hefty 10.8 GB free on your device to download and install the game. When you compare that to versions of the game on other devices, that’s actually fairly economical. But there’s no two ways about it, that is one beefy big-pants game. Luckily, that heft also refers to the game’s contents. You get the usual experience here, with controller support and everything. All that stuff you loved about last year’s version? It’s here again. There are also the expected updates like fresh rosters and such. The cover athlete this time is Allen Iverson, and for long-time fans of the franchise that’s a nice nod to where it all started. Iverson was on the cover of the very first game, NBA 2K on the magnificent SEGA Dreamcast.

    But that’s all window dressing. What’s actually new? There are apparently some new modes including The Endorsement, some new customizations for MyPLAYER and MyCOURT, and some legendary showdowns with The Greatest Fantasy Team challenge, and more. I’m not really sure how all of that shakes out, as it sounds somewhat familiar even to my ears. But if the App Store description is touting it as new, it must be! No one ever fibs on the internet.

    As mentioned, most of what you saw in last year’s version is carried over here. You can play in Quick Match, go all-out with MyCAREER, take on a more supervisorial role in The Association mode, play online in real time, and enjoy cross-platform play with all Apple ecosystems. I’d recommend playing with a controller, but you can also make do with the time-honored touch controls if needs must.

    Okay, that should be about enough time for the download to finish. Or maybe not, if you’re a quick reader. I can only take you this far though. NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition: it’s here, it’s now, it’s potentially wow. Put that meat on the plate and dig in, Apple Arcade subscribers. Steak sauce… optional.

    Epic post-apocalyptic tower-defense experience Junkworld () from Ironhide Games is out now on Apple Arcade worldwide. We’ve been covering it for a while now, and even through its soft launches before, but it has returned as an Apple Arcade exclusive. As an Apple Arcade Original game, Junkworld is available on iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and macOS now featuring 16 towers, 16 tactics, 9 heroes, 80 stages, and more.     Alongside the new release, a few notable games have gotten updates on Apple Arcade. Gameloft’s Ballistic Baseball adds in a new ranked mode today letting you compete against other players, three new Rising Star athletes, and more. Orbital Knight’s Castle Crumble brings in the Pudding Peaks kingdom with 30 new levels, Conquest mode for the new kingdom, and more. Cut the Rope Remastered has added in a new adventure board game with new content today. Garden Tails brings in the Mushroom garden with 120 new levels following Lilac’s story. Jetpack Joyride+ and Jetpack Joyride 2 have anniversary updates today with exclusive rewards. Simon’s Cat – Story Time brings in the trophy room update today, 25 new levels coming each week, and more. Squiggle Drop has added in 20 new levels today as well. The final notable update of the week is Warped Kart Racers bringing in leaderboards, a new October episode for multiplayer featuring Halloween rewards, and a new battle mode.

    SEGA recently released Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go () on Apple Arcade and Samba de Amigo: Party Central on Nintendo Switch worldwide as the first new entries in the series in ages. Read our review of the Apple Arcade game here and Nintendo Switch game here. Following both of those launches, I had a chance to talk to the legendary Shun Nakamura from SEGA about Samba de Amigo, reviving the series, other SEGA franchises he hopes to bring back, song choices, future plans, motion controls, his favorite coffee, what he’s playing right now, and a lot more.

    TouchArcade: Firstly, a belated Happy Birthday to you.

    Shun Nakamura: Thank you. I turned 51. Usually in Japan, people will work until 60, so for now, I’d like to do the best I can within the 9 years so that I have no regrets.

    TA: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you’ve been doing recently at SEGA.

    SN: Yes, so recently, as you may be aware, I have been actively working to bring back Samba de Amigo to this modern era. Even at this age, regarding new hardware, I was reminded again of how new and fun it was to have it in my hands, and how fascinating it is to think of making something new. As a creator, I’ve been mainly focused on developing Samba, but other than that, my department has been busy working on a lot of titles planned to be released, such as Sonic Superstars and the Sonic Frontiers update.

    TA: The Samba de Amigo series has been around for over two decades. What led to it getting a revival across Apple Arcade, Switch, and VR?

    SN: A big factor is that it has been common in the industry as of late to bring back previous IPs. With that in mind, when the Nintendo Switch hardware was explained to me for the first time, I thought we may be able to develop a new Samba if there are two Joy-Con included on the Switch. At first, we tried making a different title that had a unique twist, but it ended up not making it to release. Even then, I wanted to challenge myself to try again, and so this trend in the industry was a big reason why Samba has gotten a revival. With that in mind, with the appeal of all these other platforms, such as the ease of use with Apple Arcade, and the immersive feeling of VR, I thought both were appropriate to spread the casual side of Samba, so we’ve made the decision to develop it as multiplatform title while focusing on each platform’s strengths.

    TA: How did you approach resurrecting Samba de Amigo for the modern era?

    SN: Bringing back older IPs can be very difficult, because if it stays the same as it was in the past, we won’t attract new users, and if we make everything new, it may not be appealing to the original game’s fans. Taking this, we took the method to keep the base of the concept the same, but modernizing it. This title has the concept, “silly and fun.” Even if the generation may have changed, the appeal of the concept itself doesn’t change. In the past, we had places like arcades where people were able to have fun around others, so I questioned where people would do that now. To me, it would be places like TikTok or social media. There is a common connection there where you would play music and have so much fun dancing while everyone watches. With that, I revived the new Samba that kept the same core “silly fun” concept of the original, and then implemented that modern TikTok culture where people can have fun with music and movement into the game.

    TA: While the Switch version is getting paid DLC, Apple Arcade likely will see new content through updates. Tell us a little bit about how the songs were chosen for Samba de Amigo Party-To-Go.

    SN: Yes, regarding Apple Arcade, songs will be added through updates, so please look forward to it!

    We also discussed a lot on how we could modernize the music along with the game. We received a lot of feedback during the Dreamcast days that people wanted to play with songs that are not only from the Latin music genre. Back in the day, we used to only develop for the arcades in Japan, so we weren’t thinking about branching out to the overseas market at the time. This time, as we worked on modernizing the game, we chose songs that a lot of the users from around the world would be able to enjoy. Also, it was extremely difficult to choose the songs from the perspective of someone living in Japan, especially regarding current Western trends. We now had overseas staff, and a Western advisor helped choose the songs, and left it in their hands to make the final list. In addition, what us on the dev side thought was important was whether our concept would fit with that given song. Some tracks with a good rhythm may have this upbeat tempo that continues forever, but has no intonations in between, which we felt was key to having a dynamic and enjoyable experience. To that end, we chose our song candidates for the game based on if people would be able to let loose and feel the “silly fun” of Samba.

    TA: How was it translating the traditional motion control gameplay to touch controllers?

    SN: Even in the previous Dreamcast version, there were more users that enjoyed using the controller, so I already had a feeling that it was going to be fun even if it wasn’t with motion controls. Regarding the touch controllers, I made a title in the past called Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure for Nintendo 3DS and I put a Samba minigame inside of it. That game was played via touch – it also worked pretty well, and players had fun with it. Touch controllers also don’t have that random “wing it” aspect that motion controls tend to have, so I thought that users would still have plenty of fun. Therefore, in this case, I had no concerns in translating it over. However, aspects such as body movements and finger movements do differ with the motion controls compared to touch, so the “fun” people find in the game can differ as well. Either way, I’d be thrilled if players could give both a try.

    TA: Will Samba de Amigo on Apple Arcade get motion controller support with Joy-Cons in the future since iOS devices now support Joy-Cons?

    SN: The game does support Joy-Con controllers, but the buttons on the Joy-Con are different from those found on other controllers. Therefore, those who want to use them will need to adjust the button mapping through their iPhone settings, so that works. But while with other games, it is simply a matter of changing the controls, this game puts a lot of emphasis on specific buttons and their positions in relation to what’s happening on the screen, so players will need to keep this in mind when making those adjustments.

    As for motion controls, due to the complexity involved with what I just went over, we do not plan to support that at this time.

    TA: A lot of classic SEGA songs from prior games aren’t included in Samba de Amigo Party-To-Go. Are there plans to bring Samba de Janeiro to the game? It felt like the theme song for the series.

    SN: As I shared in a previous answer, we are planning on adding a variety of songs through future updates to the game. Various things are still currently under consideration, so I would ask to please look forward to what we have planned!

    TA: Sega has a rich history of music across its own games, and also Atlus titles. Will any of those songs be added to Samba de Amigo Party-To-Go?

    SN: Likewise, we have received a lot of feedback. We hope that this title reaches more people, and from there, we’d like to add even more songs.

    TA: What are your thoughts on the current state of rhythm games today?

    SN: In the department that I’m part of, there is a Music Team that makes a very popular arcade game in Japan called “maimai”. We were able to ask for their advice and have them involved in the development as well. In the classic rhythm games, there are video games like this, and additionally, Sega has a mobile title called “Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage!”. We think that these games both deliver both the deepness and the variety, thus reaching more users.

    I feel like there are a lot of games that are closer to that feeling of playing a live instrument, and you are just making these very predetermined or predictable moves while playing. I personally want to leave those types of games for others to make and instead create something that has the charm of something that lets players think outside of the box but still has that important appeal of a video game, like Samba.

    TA: What is your favorite game that you’ve worked on across all the years?

    SN: I mentioned it before, but there is a game called Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure that I love and is a game I feel like we could have done more with. It combines music and gameplay, linking both of those elements together instead of just standard gameplay, and there’s also a storyline on top of that. There are some parts that weren’t quite there, but it’s definitely a title I love.

    TA: If you could, which SEGA franchise would you bring back today that you haven’t had a chance to so far.

    SN: The Sonic series, which I continue to work on, is supported by a vast amount of fans and has multiple games to its name. So, in terms of games that I’ve had a deep involvement with and do not have a sequel, one would be Billy Hatcher, and the other, again, would have to be Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure. I have a lot of ideas I want to try out now for both games so I’m hoping I will have an opportunity, just like with Samba.

    TA: What have you been playing recently?

    SN: I played Pikmin 4 recently. It’s a game I’ve loved since the first game so I’m personally happy that this game reached a lot of people with this 4th installment. The GameCube had a lot of great games. Billy Hatcher’s a great game as well by the way! Haha

    TA: What is your favorite kind of coffee if you have one?

    SN: I just absolutely love my café lattes and I drink over 3 cups a day. It’s a great stress reliever to have when I’m overworked so I can’t imagine a world without it.

    Asphalt 8+ takes you back to Venice with new cards, brand new decals for old cars, and a gift for playing the game in the form of the McLaren M14A. Cooking Mama: Cuisine! adds new ingredient combos and dishes today. Disney SpellStruck brings in the new endless mode Blank’s Blitz to earn new rewards. Episode XOXO adds in its first new story in about a month with Summer Crush available now. Gear Club Stradale brings in four new races in overtaking mode and four new races in Grand Prix, new features including a converter for upgrade resources, and a tutorial hub. JellyCar Worlds brings in challenges for the JellyCar 1 levels, out of bounds objects in the level editor, pins to connect objects in the editor, and more possibilities for custom levels. Populus Run gets its first update in about two years with major gameplay improvements for the core experience, controller fixes, support for Nintendo Switch controllers, improvements to performance on new devices, and support for the Siri Remote (3rd generation) on tvOS.

    Taiko no Tatsujin: Pop Tap Beat 1.15 has added in seven new songs including Edison making its Taiko no Tatsujin debut, Night of Knights / Knight of Nights joining in as a Touhou Project arrangement song. I know these games do really well on the App Store and it is likely going to be a good addition to the service for getting more players and keep them subscribed. Grindstone brings in 40 new levels today with the Burning Bottoms, Sepsis Sanctorium, Bologna Bunker, and Retch Road uncharted caves. Illustrated has a new exploration experience for puzzles now with all galleries being available to browse quicker, a sort option, and more.     Samba de Amigo finally got its first proper sequel on consoles with the release of Samba de Amigo: Party Central. To go along with it, there is also this Apple Arcade game, titled Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go (). Given the heavy online and multiplayer focus of many of the modes in the console version, Party-To-Go can’t easily follow in the dance steps of its fellow. For better or worse, this is a different sort of beast despite sharing the look, user interface, unlockables, and most of the soundtrack with its console counterpart. Wait, “for better or worse”? This is a review! Let’s determine which of the two it is!

    What is Samba de Amigo? Well, it’s a rhythm game that was originally released in arcades in 1999 and on the Dreamcast in the year 2000. This puts it relatively early in the whole rhythm game boom, especially when looking at ones that used plastic instruments. SEGA is always a few years too early to the party, and it’s never a good thing for them. In this case, the plastic instruments were maracas, and they were a lot of fun. You had to hold them at one of three heights and shake along to the beat. Sometimes you would have to make poses, too. Great fun in the arcade and at home, especially if you have spectators there to laugh at you. The soundtrack leaned Latin, but had plenty of classic SEGA tunes and pop hits to round things out. It even had a cover of A-Ha’s Take On Me by ska band Reel Big Fish! Ska! It’s like punk, but with horns and happy!

    While the game had a cult following, that was really all it was able to manage. Part of that came down to its home version being on the Dreamcast, part of that came from the cost of the maracas, and part of that was just rudeness. It’s a good game, people. It got a Wii port several years later, but the Wii remotes just couldn’t sub for the maracas. Also, it had Mambo Number 5 on the soundtrack. In 2008. That’s flying too close to the sun, SEGA. This port was developed by Gearbox, the makers of Duke Nukem Forever and Brothers in Arms DS. I get the impression it didn’t do very well, so Amigo went into the vault only to be allowed out to play in SEGA All-Star games.

    The monkey has been freed, however. Not just one game, but two. Sort of. Since this is a review of Party-To-Go, I’m going to be focusing on it. I reviewed the Switch version of the other game, Party Central, in the SwitchArcade Round-Up if you want to read about that. In Party-To-Go, you’re given just two modes to play. First is the Rhythm Game mode, where you just pick a song to play and the difficulty you’d like to play it at, then have at it. The other mode is exclusive to this Apple Arcade game. Story Mode takes you through a weird tale of Amigo and the Legendary Maraca trying to bring music back to the Earth. It takes the form of a series of missions that you’ll have to complete. Finish one and you’ll get some story and unlock the next. You’ll also earn coins and levels the same you will in Rhythm Game mode, and can use them to unlock cosmetic items for Amigo.

    I like this Story Mode a lot better than the StreamiGo mode in Party Central. There’s less song repetition, and it’s less vague about what you need to do to succeed. The story itself is pretty… banal, to be kind. It makes use of some decent FMV cutscenes now and then, but for the most part it seems to be going for the vibe of an instant message conversation. Which is fine, except the characters are usually face to face. It’s filled with the kind of dialogue you just want to skip through, peppered with the occasional really good line. Well, at least we now have irrefutable evidence the monkey is in a romantic relationship with the puberty-gifted fairy. It’s a fun mode to play through, and I suppose that’s the bottom line.

    The soundtrack is mostly similar to Party Central, with a nice mix of classics and contemporary music across a variety of genres. Not many songs from the original return, and it doesn’t seem like the DLC songs from the other game are in the list here. But you do get a few exclusive songs including tracks from PSY and Lady Gaga, and that’s cool. The tunes are definitely more general in their appeal than the first game’s soundtrack, but that’s fine. It means most people should be able to find at least a few songs they know, and will be able to learn some new ones, too. Win-win.

    Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go does not have maracas controllers. It does not attempt to replicate them, and even warns you not to shake or move your device. No, this game is entirely touch-based. The screen is divided into left and right and three different height levels. When the ball enters the circle, tap that side and height. When it tells you to pose, put your fingers in the right place. When it tells you to swing the maracas back and forth, slide your fingers back and forth. It’s certainly more accurate than the maracas or any motion controls would be, but it isn’t as fun. I also find some of the sliding motions and commands to be a bit unintuitive to pull off with touch controls. It feels like SEGA just tried to cram in everything Party Central does gameplay-wise into Party-To-Go, but not all of it works due to the differing input method.

    Still, setting aside what it isn’t, Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go is a decent enough rhythm game with really strong production values for the most part. It’s not quite as good as Apple Arcade stablemate Taiko no Tatsujin, but the music is good, the gameplay mechanics are fairly easy to grasp, and between the Story Mode and unlockables you certainly have a lot to do. At times it feels like something cobbled together with bits of another game, which it probably has been, but it sometimes feels like it’s doing its own thing too. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, there is controller support here. It works like the button controls in Party Central, mapping the positions to the sticks and buttons. I wouldn’t advise it.

    I think the Story Mode and extra tunes in Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go make it worth trying out for fans of the series even if they’ve already grabbed Party Central, but there’s no question this game loses something the further it moves away from the grace of the maracas controllers. If you don’t care about that, and there’s a very good chance you don’t, the only thing you really need to worry about here is that the demands of the note charts seem more tuned for console play than touch. You’ll have to really twist your fingers at times. Otherwise, it’s a decent game for its genre with a solid list of tracks to tap along to. Nothing remarkable, but good enough.

    The kinds of games we see come to Apple Arcade has certainly shifted in the general sense over time. I can understand why, as Apple tries to get the biggest engagement bang for its bucks. Why blow the bank on a bunch of games that people will play through once or twice and then never touch again? Oddly, this has resulted in Apple Arcade seemingly coming full circle to provide a lot of games similar to the ones that dominate the rest of the App Store. Kingdoms: Merge & Build () is clearly one such title, taking after hits like Merge Mansion. Not the first merger we’ve seen on Apple Arcade, but it’s the first one I’m bothering to review. I’d like to say there is some grand reason, but it’s just a spontaneous choice. Let’s see how it works out for me.

    Some information up-front before we get into things. I’ve played a few merging puzzle games before, most notably Merge Dragons. It helped me get some premium currency in Avengers Academy, and I found it amusing for a while. Eventually I hit the hard paywalls and just stopped playing. Not the worst thing I played for a leg-up in my stupid Marvel game, but also not something I was going to go far out on a limb for. Merge Mansion‘s ads certainly enticed me, but I quickly realized I was more interested in the ads than the game. So that is where I am at with this kind of game, and I apologize for fans of the genre if I don’t quite do things service here.

    Prince Edward is the young royal heir of a fictional kingdom, and he’s a narcissistic, lazy, obnoxious, spoiled little twit. For reasons I can’t possibly fathom, his parents decided it would be okay to leave the kingdom in his hands while they went on a trip. It doesn’t take long for things to go to heck, and in the wake of an argument with a mage the entire kingdom is destroyed. The job of putting things back in order thus falls to the person least qualified in the world to do it. He only cares about his own comfort and revenge, of course. But he isn’t going to be able to get what he wants without the help of others, and he’s not going to get that unless he starts being less of a royal pri…nce.

    That’s the story, and it pretty much progresses as you would expect. Edward gets to know the citizens of his kingdom, sees how hard they work, actually does some hard work himself, and eventually learns to stop being such a little jerk. Not a terribly original tale by any means, and Edward being the center of everything means you’re going to have to put up with his antics for a good long while. The story is broken down into chapters, and as you complete the various goals of each chapter you’ll get a bit of story doled out.

    I wish I could tell you the gameplay has some original elements to it, but that would be a fib and a half. Generally speaking, you’re looking to rebuild your kingdom. Building anything or upgrading anything requires money and materials, and you’ll acquire both of those by merging things on the merge board. Some buildings serve to produce generators, producing a new one as you exhaust the previous one in an utterly pointless mechanic that is clearly there for the game’s eventual move out of Apple Arcade and into the realm of free-to-play. Other generators can only be acquired by fulfilling requests, which only require things you can get via the basic generators.

    Some of your buildings will generate coins, but you’ll get the bulk of your money by completing standard requests. Those will eventually run out, but will refresh very quickly. The timers feel almost pointless since they’re really short. The more you play, the more generators you’ll have to deal with, leading to a much more cluttered board. Luckily, you can sell anything off the board whenever you like to make some room. You can also use some of the ultimate merged forms as tools in the kingdom building portion. Well, if you’ve played a game like this before you probably know how all of this goes. The more you play the more expensive everything gets, requiring you to grind on that board for a really long time to get anything done.

    That’s the one remaining bit of friction from what I’m sure is the original free-to-play design of this game. Everything else has been toned down, such as the timers and generator spawns, so you can pretty much just keep playing until you finish the game or get bored. The latter will likely strike before too long, because it really does start taking too much time to get anything done. There’s absolutely no strategy involved in the merging game since most of the generators are readily available and any space issues can easily be mitigated by selling off items on the board. The result is a game that is more like a boring storybook that requires you to write lines on the board between page turns.

    If you want to play a merging game in Apple Arcade, I’d recommend My Little Pony: Mane Merge over this one. It’s more interesting mechanically, the story bits are better, the characters are less annoying, and the presentation is a lot nicer. Kingdoms: Merge & Build is technically more interesting than, like, counting spots on the ceiling or twiddling your thumbs, but just barely. It comes off very much like a free-to-play game that has made a couple of tweaks to fit the Apple Arcade rules, and those changes end up squeezing out what little mechanical engagement the game likely had to offer. The story and characters don’t help matters, either. Just a dud all around.
