  • Durham, Fayetteville and Greensboro: Primary election voter guide

Ninety percent of counties in North Carolina have municipal elections this year. Early voting is already underway for many and several cities have primaries set for Tuesday, Oct. 7, including Durham, Fayetteville and Greensboro.

    What You Need To Know

    •  Many of North Carolina’s municipal primary elections are on Tuesday, Oct. 7
    •  Durham, Fayetteville and Greensboro’s city council and mayoral elections are highly contested
    •  The general election will be on Nov. 4

These three cities’ councils are nonpartisan, so the two candidates from each open seat that receive the most votes in the primary will move on to the general election on Nov. 4.

Everyone hoping to vote must bring a valid photo ID or fill out an ID-exception form. Voters can check their registration and find their sample ballot and precinct location here.

    Durham

The mayoral title and three seats on the city council are up for election. Here are the candidates:

    Mayor

    City council Ward I

    City council Ward II

    City council Ward III

The city council member candidates have to live within the ward they represent, but residents anywhere in the city can vote for them.

Saturday, Oct. 4 is the last day of early voting for the primary. Polling places will be open on primary election day Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

    Fayetteville

Early voting for the primary election ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. Registered voters can call Cumberland Board of Elections’ office at (910) 678-7733 for the location of their polling place and hours on Tuesday. Here are the candidates:

    Mayor

    City council District 1

    City council District 2

    • Malik Davis (current council member)
    • Gail Morfesis
    • Joseph Thames

    City council District 7

    City council District 8

    • Rodney E. Garvin
    • Mahmoud A. Hamed
    • Shaun McMillan
    • Robbie Poole (withdrew)

    City council District 9

Fayetteville city council districts three through six do not have enough candidates running to require primaries but will be on the general election ballot.

    Greensboro

Greensboro’s mayoral seat is up for grabs since Nancy Vaughan, the current mayor, is not seeking reelection. The incumbent council members for districts one, two and four are also not running again. Here are the 2025 candidates:

    Mayor

City council at-large (voters will choose three out of the list below)

    City council District 2

    City council District 3

    City council District 4

Residents can vote only for council member candidates in their district or those running for “At-Large” positions. Voters can find which district they are a part of here.

The primary for District 5 was canceled because there are only two candidates running: Tammi Thurm, the current council member for the district, and Jeannette Davidson-Mayer.

  • Pinellas County down 12 polling places for election day

Pinellas County down 12 polling places for election day

LARGO, Fla. — Election day is right around the corner, but in Pinellas County depending on where residents live, they may be voting in a different building.

    What You Need To Know

    • Recent hurricanes damaged polling locations in Pinellas County
    • There were originally meant to be 168 polling places in Pinellas County, now there is 156
    • The supervisor of elections has contacted voters affected by the change in polling place locations

According to the Supervisor of Elections in Pinellas County Julie Marcus, there will be 12 fewer polling places on election day than planned due to the recent hurricanes.

County officials shared a statement that said:

“The Supervisor of Elections has made extensive efforts to ensure voters are well-informed about polling place changes. We sent polling place change notices to all affected voters. Additionally, we are publishing updates in the newspaper and on our website.”

Democrat and Republican organizations in Pinellas County are reaching out to affected voters as well.

“This is a … unprecedented event here in Pinellas County and our hearts go out to them,” Pinellas Republican Chair Adam Ross said. “But also at the same time, we know they want to vote. So, of course, we’re going to do our job to give them information on how and where to vote.”

From texting to phone calls, everyone is going about making people aware of the changes slightly differently, but the ultimate goal is to make sure voters know that can still vote without issue.

“Some of them are very large locations like Lake Vista in South St. Pete.” Democratic Chair Jennifer Griffith said. “That’s one of our primary locations and that has been moved to Boyd Hill Hammock Hall. So I would really like people who know that area to know because that is typically one of Pinellas’ busiest polling locations.”

All these groups are planning to continue the push out to affected voters, but there are other ways to vote such as early voting which is underway across Florida.

  • Pinellas sees dozens of voters sign-up at election offices at primary deadline

Pinellas sees dozens of voters sign-up at election offices at primary deadline

LARGO, Fla. — Inside the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office, ballots upon ballots are being sorted. Ready to be mailed out to registered voters ahead of next month’s Aug. 20 primary.

    What You Need To Know

    • Monday marked the deadline for Floridians to register to vote in the Aug. 20 primary election
    • The deadline brought out dozens to get signed up at various tax collector’s offices, including first-time voters
    • Those working at registration locations say they have seen a noticeable uptick in the amount of people registering
    • The deadline to register for 2024 General Election is Oct. 7, 2024

“Florida has a registration deadline which is 29 days prior to the election, and we also have closed primaries, with the exceptions of universal primary contests,” says Marcus. “It’s really important to check your voter registration status, you can do that on your supervisor’s website- for Pinellas it’s VotePinellas.gov and just get election ready today.”

And getting election ready is what many across Pinellas were doing. Such as getting registered to vote at one of the county’s tax collector’s offices.

“In all the different places I’ve worked, I’ve never seen the amount of activity and the interest as I have today!” said Maura Sweeney, Pinellas County Election Ambassador. “It’s really been remarkable. It’s very encouraging and inspiring.”

The deadline to register brought out dozens to get signed up, including first-time voters.

“When I saw them here, I was like, ‘Oh- well it would be a good time because I’m sure I’m going to be waiting a little while,’” said Alexa Cooper, who was registering to vote for the first time. “It’s busy.”

And plenty have taken that same opportunity to register.

“Things like that are so exciting for us because our whole incentive at our election’s office is to make sure we’re out there,” says Sweeney. “That the community knows we’re out there and we want to make sure that everybody has an opportunity to get registered and also get current as a voter.”

Showing that this upcoming election is sure to have a decent turnout.

“I’ve been doing this for 22 years and what we traditionally see is the highest participation rates in general Presidential election years,” said Marcus. “So in November, Pinellas County has always been highly engaged and I do not expect anything different going into 2024.”

Shaping up for what is sure to be a busy November election.

If you are requesting a mail-in ballot, requests need to be made by Aug. 8 in order to receive one for the Aug. 20 primary.

The deadline to register for the 2024 General Election is Oct. 7, 2024.
