    An Uber Eats delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint and carjacked while trying to drop off someone’s food at an apartment complex in South Carolina, according to police.Officers with the Spartanburg Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex in Spartanburg after receiving a report of an armed carjacking. The suspect, identified as Ryan Maquese Bennett, went through the victim’s pockets and stole his wallet and its contents, according to the police report. Bennett is also accused of taking the victim’s cell phone and attempting to access a financial application, but returned the phone when he was unsuccessful. The suspect then entered the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene, according to the report. Police said the victim was not physically injured. The stolen vehicle was described as a burgundy four-door Nissan Altima with damage to the passenger-side door.Bennett has been charged with carjacking, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Bennett was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing. Major Art Littlejohn said, “We encourage delivery drivers to trust their instincts, stay alert, and immediately contact 911 if they sense anything suspicious or unsafe.”

  • Gunman dies after being shot by off-duty ICE agent; LAPD investigating

    A New Year’s Eve confrontation between an off-duty ICE officer and a man who was firing a gun at an apartment complex has left the gunman dead and prompted an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

    “On December, 31st, an off duty ICE Officer bravely responded to an active shooter situation at his apartment complex. In order to protect his life and that of others, he was forced to defensively use his weapon and exchanged gunfire with the shooter,” read an emailed statement from Tricia McLaughlin, the department’s assistant secretary of public affairs. “Fortunately, our brave officer was not injured while protecting his community.”

    The Homeland Security statement said the ICE officer contacted police following the incident.

    “This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the LAPD, and we refer any further questions to them,” the statement said.

    According to a City News Service report, police responded to the Valley Pointe Apartments complex at Roscoe Boulevard and Amestoy Avenue in Northridge at 11:37 p.m. Wednesday. The news service quoted an unnamed LAPD officer as saying the man who was killed was firing an assault rifle into the air. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Video taken at the scene by KTLA News showed a white privacy canopy set up on a walkway at the apartments to shield view of the body.

    Neither the identity of the dead man nor the ICE officer has been released and no arrests were reported.

    A man was arrested after a 24-year-old man was shot Dec .12 at an apartment complex in west Fort Worth and later died at a hospital, police said.

    Kareem Hardin, 30, was arrested on an outstanding capital murder warrant related to the shooting, Fort Worth police said in a news release.

    Officers found 24-year-old Lawrence Chance Homan, who’d been shot at an apartment complex in the 6400 block of Wildwood Circle. According to police, Homan and a woman had just dropped off another woman at the complex.

    Homan was getting ready to drive away about 4:45 a.m., when two people tried to get into his car. One pulled out a gun and shot him. Homan was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital for treatment, but he died a short time later in an operating room, police said.

    The investigation is ongoing, police said.

    One woman was shot at a local apartment complex Monday night.

    As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00, the shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of Gant Drive just before 10 p.m.

    A Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant told News Center 7’s Mason Fletcher that a woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

    News Center 7 crews on scene spotted several evidence markers and caution tape blocking parts of the parking lot.

    The sergeant said a woman, who is considered a suspect, is currently detained for questioning.

    A “small child” was found in the suspect’s car; however, authorities believe the child belongs to the suspect, the sergeant said.

    The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies interviewed and released several people.

    The department’s Special Investigative Unit is investigating the shooting.

    Dozens of cats and one dog died when a fire erupted Sunday morning in an apartment complex in Long Beach.

    The Long Beach Fire Department responded to calls of a fire at a three-story apartment building in the 3500 block of Linden Avenue about 7:30 a.m. Firefighters extinguished the flames seven minutes later, Long Beach Fire Capt. Jack Crabtree said. It was not immediately clear how long the fire burned before firefighters were able to tackle it.

    In all, 32 cats and one dog succumbed to the fire. The resident of the apartment was not home at the time. She told authorities that the animals did not belong to her and were planned for adoption, Crabtree said.

    Residents said that smoke spilled into the apartment building’s hallway. The fire was contained to the single apartment unit, which was significantly damaged. No other occupants were affected.

    The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, Crabtree said.

    Long Beach Animal Services, which Crabtree said assisted and handled the animals after the fire was put out, was not available for comment on whether there were other animals inside the unit that were saved.

    It was not clear how old the animals were. The city of Long Beach allows no more than four weaned pets at one site, with some exceptions.

    A murder trial is set to proceed after being upended by a revelation that an elderly witness, previously thought to be dead, is still alive.

    In August 2021, former University of Miami football player Rashaun Jones was charged in the murder of his onetime teammate, 22-year-old Bryan Pata, who was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Miami on Nov. 7, 2006. Jones has pleaded not guilty.

    ESPN reported that prosecutors told the court a witness, Paul Conner, an 81-year-old retiree, was dead, basing their belief on information from a third-party database. Conner used to live in the apartment complex where Pata was killed, and had notified police that he heard a loud noise and saw an individual “jogging” away from an area close to the scene of the crime, according to the outlet, and he later selected Jones from a photo lineup.

    But ESPN reporters located Conner alive when they knocked on his door in Louisville, Ky. weeks before the trial was set to begin. On August 25, he told the outlet he has difficulty recalling the details of the incident. His phone also showed dozens of missed calls, some of which appeared to originate from Miami-area numbers.

    “I’m getting up in years,” he told ESPN. “My memory comes and goes. How long ago was this court case?”

    “ESPN released an article whereby they made contact with our eyewitness in this case, Paul Conner,” a prosecutor told the court during a hearing on Friday, Sept. 19, Miami news station WPLG reported.

    According to the station, the judge ruled that the case is set to proceed on Oct. 6.

    The prosecutor and defense attorney involved in the case could not immediately be reached by PEOPLE to provide additional information about how the trial is moving forward in light of the new information about Conner and it is unclear whether he will testify.

    According to ESPN, prosecutor Cristina Diamond told the judge that in light of the outlet’s reporting, a detective contacted local police in Kentucky to request a visit to Conner’s most recent address.

    “They were able to make contact with Paul Conner. So at this time, what I can tell the court is that Paul Conner is alive,” Diamond said, per ESPN. “I think the state needs to do a little bit of further investigation. It appears that he was very confused and is not certain what the case is about.”

    In a matter of hours in Fulton County, at least six young people were shot. Four of those victims were all injured at the same apartment complex.

    Channel 2’s Michael Seiden was in southeast Atlanta during Channel 2 Action News at 5 p.m. where four people were shot on Thursday night.

    Atlanta police say each of the four victims, ages 12, 14, 15 and 18, were shot in the leg and are expected to survive.

    Seiden watched as police installed a surveillance camera tower in the parking lot of the Capitol Vanira Apartments on Hank Aaron Blvd. SE.

    “I see the kids,” witness Robert Jackson said. “They were bleeding. I wanted to cry.”

    He said he ran outside with a gun of his own when he heard the shots.

    “I said, ‘Oh, my God!’ I’m looking for a car, but I didn’t see no car. I was making sure the kids were okay,” he said. “They had holes this big in these little babies!”

    Neighbors say it may have started over a stolen watch, but police have not commented on motives or made any arrests.

    Despite added safety measures, some say they have had enough of the violence.

    “We fixing to probably move out of Georgia soon. It’s getting more hectic and crazy,” witness Romeo Fuller said.

    Residents told Seiden that the surveillance camera tower is a good start, but they want to see off-duty officers and security guards in the area as well.

    Seiden reached out to the apartment complex’s management company, but has not received a response.

    A man was arrested Saturday night after allegedly shooting multiple rounds of gunfire from the top of a Marina del Rey apartment building, scaring neighbors and drawing a large emergency response, authorities said.

    No one was injured as a result of the heavy gunfire, which was sprayed down on the streets along the 4100 block of Via Marina, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

    An arrest was made after 911 calls came in after 10 p.m. about relentless gunfire in the affluent seaside Los Angeles neighborhood. The suspect — whose name has not been released — is in custody, and an investigation is ongoing, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

    A livestream of the incident appeared to be posted by the shooter, according to City News Service. Those videos appear to have been removed from the internet.

    An L.A. County Sheriff’s Department helicopter observed a male suspect on the roof of an apartment complex “firing rounds from a rifle,” according to a news release.

    Armored SWAT-style vehicles responded to the active shooter scene and closed down streets in the Via Marina area late Saturday night.

    Witnesses told City News Service that the man is a chef.

    Arnel Management Co. has agreed to settle allegations it illegally withheld security deposits, the California attorney general announced Friday.

    The move came nearly eight years after a Times story detailed reports from tenants who alleged that the major Orange County landlord deducted hundreds of dollars for unneeded cleaning and repairs even when residents left their units spotless.

    “For many renters, especially those from lower-income backgrounds, affording a security deposit entails a great deal of sacrifice,” Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta said in a statement. “We are holding Arnel accountable.”

    Arnel has 19 apartment complexes in Southern California, with all but one in Orange County. The other is in Los Angeles County.

    In 2016, the company — then owned by billionaire political power broker George Argyros — was the fifth-largest landlord in Orange County.

    It’s unclear what Argyros’ current role is with Arnel. The company and its attorney did not return messages seeking comment.

    Under California law, landlords cannot withhold a deposit to clean an apartment left in the same condition as when a tenant moved in, or to pay for fixing ordinary wear and tear.

    According to the attorney general, Arnel charged for unneeded cleaning and repairs and treated part of its tenant’s security deposit as nonrefundable no matter the condition of the apartment.

    The announcement Friday wasn’t the first time Arnel has faced similar allegations. In addition to tenants The Times spoke with in 2016, Arnel settled allegations it illegally withheld security deposits in 2001.

    The state office took over that case after Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas — who had accepted campaign cash from Arnel — was widely criticized for taking a personal role in his office’s investigation.

    That settlement paved the way for Argyros to become ambassador to Spain, an appointment that had stalled amid the controversy.

    As part of the new settlement, Arnel must pay $1.15 million, with $650,000 going to legal aid organizations in Orange and Los Angeles counties. The attorney general’s office also said Arnel would be “subject to more stringent injunctive terms to deter future misconduct.”

    STATEN ISLAND, New York (WABC) — No power, no heat, no hot water and no elevators.

    That’s what thousands of residents at the Stapleton Houses on Staten Island have been facing since Tuesday afternoon.

    To make matters worse, the loss in services continues on a night when temperatures are expected to hover around the 30-degree mark overnight.

    Because of that, there were cries for help echoing through the complex.

    Saniyah Pearson has been clutching extra clothes like no 8-year-old should have to.

    You can hear it in her voice. She just wants to cry it out, but she’s hanging in there.

    “It’s really dark right now and I’m cold and my nose is just like getting stuffy right now, and I’m not really feeling good,” Pearson said.

    “I need power. I haven’t had my phone charged,” resident Jakima Baldwin said. “It’s ridiculous. We’ve been going through this for years.”

    The only lights that can be seen are flashlights from NYCHA workers trying to navigate the pitch-black dark, and temporary massive flood lights at the end of the complex.

    NYCHA says electricians are on site and will be working through the night Wednesday to restore services.

    In the meantime, they are deploying mobile generators as a temporary measure.

    NYCHA says MTA buses will be on site and available to residents to keep them warm throughout the night.

    A resident Eyewitness News reporter CeFaan Kim spoke to lives on the seventh floor.

    Her daughter is in a wheelchair and has been trapped in her own home for more than a day and a half now.

    It’s not clear yet how much longer residents will have to wait to have their services restored.

    9 families displaced in South Jersey apartment complex fire

    PINE HILL, New Jersey (WPVI) — Nine families were displaced after a South Jersey apartment complex went up in flames Friday night.

    The three-alarm fire broke out just before midnight on the 200 block of West Branch Avenue in Pine Hill.

    Firefighters worked for over two hours before getting the flames under control.

    No injuries were reported.

    The Pine Hill Marshalls Office says the fire was accidental and caused by an improperly discarded cigarette on the balcony of an apartment.

    There were 16 units in the building, and all were affected by fire, smoke, or water damage.

    The American Red Cross is assisting 23 people.
