  • Amitabh Bachchan Trolls Pakistan, Mammootty, Anupam Kher & Others Cheer for India After Asia Cup Win | Filmfare.com

    [ad_1]

India won its 9th Asia Cup in a thrilling final last night, defeating Pakistan in Dubai. However, after the match, India refused to accept the trophy or medals from ACC President and Pakistan’s PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi, citing tensions between the two countries, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year. Several Indian celebrities took to social media to celebrate India’s win and congratulate the team. Some also trolled the Pakistan team.

Actor Anil Kapoor wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “India Zindabad.” Superstar Mammootty shared a picture and expressed, “Team India didn’t just win the Asia Cup, they owned it. Champions without a single defeat. Absolutely magnificent!”

Anupam Kher added, “Bharat Mata ki jay! Kya baat hai (Wow)! What a game! Oh my God. Jeetenge bhai jeetenge. Bharat Mata ki jay (We will win. Hail India)! Vande Mataram. Khush ho gaya dil. Kya bolun main (I’m so happy. What do I say?). Superb. Proud of my country, proud of this cricket team. Fantastic, very well played. God bless them.”

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan took this opportunity to troll former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. For some context, Akhtar recently made a slip of the tongue and referred to Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma as Abhishek Bachchan. He said in an interview, “If Pakistan manage to get Abhishek Bachchan out in a hypothetical situation, what happens to India’s middle order?” before he was quickly corrected by the host. Reacting to this, Abhishek had tweeted, “Sir, with all due respect… don’t think they’ll even manage that! And I’m not even good at playing cricket.”

Big B referred to this while trolling the Pakistan team after their defeat. He wrote, “Jeet Gaye! Well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ Udhar zabaan ladkhadai, aur idhar bina batting, bowling fielding kiye, ladkhada diya dushman ko!! Bolti bandh! Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! Jai Maa Durga!! (We won! Well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’. A slip of tongue there, and here a slip on the field, we shut down the opponent with our perfromance! Hail Maa Durga)

Several other celebrities, such as Sidharth Malhotra, Ali Fazal, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ranveer Singh, Angad Bedi, Preity Zinta, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, among others, cheered for India. Take a look at their reactions:

The Ba***ds of Bollywood actor Raghav Juyal, who was in Dubai, told ANI, “Bohot acha laga aaj. Aur main apne bacchon ko bataunga ki main ye legendary match dekhne aaya tha. Bilkul kamaal ho gaya (It felt so good today. I will even tell my children that I came to watch this legendary match. Absolutely amazing).”

Meet actor who got bitten by acting bug in 9th grade, stole Rs 100 from mom for course, slept at railway stations and played Shah Rukh Khan’s father

    [ad_1]

There are actors and then there are character artists who continue to entertain the audience for decades. Those character actors don’t need stardom to prove their acting skills and are still admired for their immense contribution to the Hindi cinema. Today, we are here to discuss a veteran actor who once put out his resume on LinkedIn. Despite being a part of over 500 films in his illustrious career, he believes that the ‘greatest role is always the next one’. Meet actor Anupam Kher who got bitten by the acting bug in 9th grade, stole Rs 100 from his mom for a course, slept at railway stations and played Shah Rukh Khan’s father in a film.

Anupam Kher got a big break in his debut film, Saaransh in 1984. Yes, 1984, the year he mentioned in his recent Instagram post was a “make-or-break year” for him. Kher was 28 years old when he aced the performance of playing a 65-year-old man in Mahesh Bhatt’s directorial. The veteran actor has been quite vocal about his struggling journey before entering showbiz. Before that, let’s take a lookback at how he discovered acting as a passion.

In an interview with Humans of Bombay in 2019, Anupam Kher reminisced about his journey and revealed that his calling to enter in acting field arrived when he participated in a play in 9th Standard. Kher stated that he initially couldn’t deliver his lines properly so they were passed on to someone else who then forgot during the play.

The Saaransh actor added that he “made something up” in his “broken” English, leaving the audience in splits.

During the same interview, Anupam Kher further spoke about how he once stole money from his mom Dulari Kher for an acting audition. Kher recounted that he witnessed an advertisement for a four-year acting course in Chandigarh for which he needed Rs 100 to give an audition. The senior actor admitted to lying to his mom about going for a picnic instead.

However, destiny was in his favor and his audition was accepted. Later, he pursued the course in the city.

Anupam Kher then shifted to Bombay where he was hired as a teacher in a drama school. The school had a “small space to teach and a tiny room to stay”. However, Kher managed to teach while giving auditions and performing in plays. At one time, the actor was broke and had no work. During his struggling phase, Kher lived on beaches and slept on railway platforms.

In his latest Instagram post, Anupam Kher spoke about sleeping at railway stations in his initial career. “…Had slept on railway stations at times because I didn’t have money to rent a room…”

Anupam Kher is best known for movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Apna Sapna Money Money, and many more. Anupam played the role of Shah Rukh Khan’s father in Aditya Chopra’s 1995 directorial venture, DDLJ. His adorable camaraderie with SRK is still cherished among its fans.

On the work front, Anupam Kher will now be seen in Vijay 69. In the quirky slice-of-life film, Kher is playing the role of a 69-year-old man, Vijay, who plans to run a triathlon. The upcoming film also stars Chunky Panday in a crucial role.

Ms @suyeshasavant is an ex student of @actorprepares. And not someone who complains easily. She must have really gone through a huge trauma because of her small baby involved here. IB 71 Movie Review

    [ad_1]

    critic’s rating:

    2.5/5

IB 71 opens with Pakistan preparing for a third war, this time from the Eastern front in collaboration with China, not learning anything from the setbacks they faced in 1948 and 1965. After receiving information about how Pakistan is secretly planning another war, Intelligence Bureau Chief N.S. Awasthi (Anupam Kher) and his most trusted agent Dev (Vidyut Jammwal) hatch a plan to halt Pakistan in its tracks by creating conditions which will create probable cause for India to deny use of Indian airspace to Pakistani planes. Along with 30 other agents, Dev sets things in motion where deluded Kashmiri radicals, Qasim Qureshi (Vishal Jethwa) and Ashfaq Qureshi (Faizan Khan) are goaded into hijacking an Indian airliner and getting it landed in Pakistan. They hope to get Pakistan declared as a terrorist supporter and thus Indians can deny them use of airspace. How this far-fetched plan reaches its conclusion forms the crux of the film.

Sankalp Reddy had earlier directed The Ghazi Attack (2017), which was about submarine warfare between India and Pakistan during the 1971 War. The present film too is set in the same era and is said to be inspired by true events. While the premise of the film is actually quite intriguing, the execution isn’t up to the mark. The screenplay is quite muddled, to say the least. At times, the unintentional humour makes us laugh. Some bits of the film feel like comedy. Sample this: A frustrated terrorist tells the pilot to land the plane on his head. And the terrorists use a gun from a toy shop to hijack the plane. Instead of calling up and asking the army check post to stop the Indians, the Pakistani intelligence officer decides to travel by car, allowing the agents to escape intact.

Vidyut Jammwal is a bonafide action star but he’s been given a film which asks him to utilise his acting potential, rather than his muscles. He does everything he’s been asked to do but it’s no fun to see an action star being utilised in a dramatic role – something which isn’t his strength. He does get to beat up the bad guys a couple of times but the action that’s more or less it. There is a good chase sequence shot at Dal Lake. It’s neatly executed but apart from that we hardly witness any other bit of action.

Cinematographer Gnana Shekar V. S. has shot the Kashmir portions beautifully. Looking at them, you instantly want to book a ticket and land there. The editing too is pacy and at just under two hours the length of the film is quite apt. There’s no heroine in the film, nor are there any lip-synch songs. At times, it feels like a documentary. The sense of heightened action needed in such films isn’t maintained. As said earlier, it’s criminal to give Vidyut Jammwal a star billing and then give him a sedate role. Better execution would have turned it into a cracking spy thriller but in its present avatar, IB 71 feels like an opportunity gone to waste…

    Trailer : IB 71

Story: Indian Intelligence finds itself taken by surprise when it is revealed that both Pakistan and China pose a significant threat to India, signalling potential attacks. In order to avert this imminent danger, IB agent Dev Jammwal devises a strategic plan aimed at safeguarding the nation by effectively closing off Indian airspace.

Review: In recent years, a spate of films has emerged showcasing the exceptional prowess of Indian Intelligence teams on the silver screen. From “Baby” to “Akbar Walter Romeo,” and most recently, “Mission Majnu”- these films have unearthed tales of audacious exploits by Indian Intelligence officers that were previously unknown to us. However, “IB 71” goes a step further by delivering a riveting plot and a well-crafted film. Drawing inspiration from real events, “IB 71” delves into the prelude to the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, when East Pakistan transformed into Bangladesh. The makers deserve praise for selecting this extraordinary chapter from the history of Indian Intelligence, which at times seems almost unbelievable. This action thriller is a gripping cinematic experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The events in the film unfold thick and fast, tightly centered around the operation conducted by the Intelligence team, making it an engrossing watch.
“IB 71” unfolds with the intensity of a Hollywood thriller, wasting no time in getting to the crux of the matter and maintaining focus on the core plot throughout its duration. It is commendable that the makers opted to forego song placements for the majority of the film, thus ensuring its momentum (although there is one song towards the end). Any musical number would have undoubtedly hindered the film’s pace. The daring exploits depicted in the film exude authenticity rather than a clichéd cinematic portrayal. The art direction and cinematography of this film deserve special mention, as they create a magnificent backdrop that transports viewers back to India in 1971. The sequences set in Dal Lake are breath-taking, with aerial shots capturing its beauty like never before.

The film revolves around Dev Jammwal (Vidyut Jammwal), an intelligence officer who receives critical information about Pakistan and China’s impending attacks on Indian soil within a mere ten-day timeframe. With limited time and resources, the only viable strategy to counter this threat is by implementing an airspace blockade. Dev presents his audacious plan to his superior, NS Awasthi (Anupam Kher), which involves orchestrating the hijacking of an Indian plane by Kashmiri separatists and ensuring its landing in Pakistani territory. Initially dismissed as an implausible scheme by the government, they eventually recognize its potential and agree to execute the well-structured operation. Complications arise when the entire team of passengers, comprising intelligence officers, find themselves lodged in a Lahore hotel, and events unfold in an unforeseen manner, deviating from the original plan.

Vidyut Jammwal portrays his character with utmost control and restraint. Apart from two action sequences, Vidyut relies more on his acting skills and delivers a sincere performance. The noteworthy aspect is that this time he receives ample opportunities to showcase his acting chops, which he accomplishes with finesse. Anupam Kher reprises a role that he has mastered in the past, and once again, he excels in it. However, it is Vishal Jethwa who truly shines in the film, portraying the character of Qasim. As a restless Kashmiri separatist, he delivers a commendable performance, balancing both cruelty and unintentional humour. Sankalp Reddy takes the director’s seat, providing crisp and focused direction. However, it is the film’s background score that will certainly detract viewers from an otherwise exhilarating experience. The loud and overpowering background music becomes jarring and overwhelming at times. If only the film had opted for a more restrained approach to the background music, the impact would have been heightened significantly.

“IB 71” is an engaging watch that sheds light on a remarkable chapter of history, instilling a sense of pride in our intelligence network. With a runtime of nearly two hours, the film maintains a screenplay that keeps the audience captivated throughout, ensuring there is never a dull moment. If you have an affinity for period action thrillers, this film successfully checks the boxes.

‘Toh celebrity kyun bante?’: Here’s what happened when this corporate exec met Anupam Kher on a flight

    [ad_1]

Piramal Capital and Housing Finance Managing Director Jairam Sridharan was on a flight recently, deeply engrossed in his book and pretending not to care about a celebrity onboard. Halfway through the flight, he met the veteran actor Anupam Kher and wanted to strike up a conversation with the latter.

The industry veteran recounted his conversation with the acting maven in a LinkedIn post. Sridharan asked Kher if he would be comfortable talking to a complete stranger on a flight. To this, Kher replied and said that he wouldn’t have bothered to become a celebrity if he wanted people to leave him alone. Kher said, “Look, sir, if we wanted people to leave us alone, why would we bother turning a celebrity in the first place?”

After this, Kher asked Sridharan about his life story and appreciated the latter for his decision to come back to India.

In this post, he wrote, “From there, the conversation soars. He asks you your life story and actually listens. Celebrates your choice to return to India. (“Bahut accha kiya aap wapas aa gaye.”) Asks after your family. Gently wags his finger at something you say … “You say you liked my father character in Dilwale Dulhania”, he chides, “but sometimes you speak like you are the Amrish Puri type of dad.” ”

Sridharan further wrote that during the course of this conversation, he brought up an unpleasant incident from Kher’s life, to which the veteran actor replied with the exact date and location of the incident.  The Piramal Capital and Housing Finance MD then asked Kher how did the latter know what he was talking about. To this, Kher quipped and noted, “I remember my failures more vividly” Sridharan further noted, “Only, ‘failures’ doesn’t bear the same pathos that ‘naakamiyaan’ carries.”

Israeli Filmmaker Comments On Kashmir Film Stoke Controversy

    [ad_1]

By SHEIKH SAALIQ, The Associated Press.

Israel’s envoy to India on Tuesday denounced a filmmaker from his country after he called a blockbuster Bollywood film on disputed Kashmir a “propaganda” and “vulgar movie” at a film festival, stoking a debate about recent history that fuels the ongoing conflict.

Naor Gilon, Israel’s ambassador to India, said he was “extremely hurt” by comments made by filmmaker Nadav Lapid in which he said the movie “The Kashmir Files” was unworthy of being screened at the highly acclaimed International Film Festival of India. The event, organized by the Indian government in western Goa state, ended Monday.

“The Kashmir Files” was released in March to a roaring success and is largely set in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, when attacks and threats by militants led to the migration of most Kashmiri Hindus from the Muslim-majority disputed region. Many film critics and Kashmiri Muslims have called the film hateful propaganda, while its fans and proponents, including India’s many federal government ministers, see it as essential viewing of the plight of Kashmiri Hindus, locally called Pandits.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and both claim the territory in full. In 1989, tens of thousands of mostly Kashmiri Muslims rose up against Indian rule, leading to a protracted armed conflict in the region.

On Tuesday, Gilon tweeted at Lapid, saying: “YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.”

“I’m no film expert but I do know that it’s insensitive and presumptuous to speak about historic events before deeply studying them and which are an open wound in India because many of the involved are still around and still paying a price,” Gilon tweeted. He also accused Lapid of inflicting damage on the growing relationship between India and Israel.

The festival jury has distanced itself from Lapid’s remarks and called them his “personal opinion.” An internationally acclaimed director, Lapid’s movies “Synonyms” and “Ahad’s Knee” have won awards at major festivals.

At the time of its release, “The Kashmir Files” was endorsed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and promoted by his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party by offering it tax breaks in some states governed by it.

The film, however, set off heated debates. Its supporters praised it for speaking the truth about Kashmiri Hindus, while critics said the film was aimed to stoke anti-Muslim sentiments at a time when calls for violence against India’s minority Muslims have increased.

Nonetheless, the film was a blockbuster. Made on a budget of $2 million, it has earned more than $43 million so far, making it one of India’s highest-grossing films this year.

The filmmakers of “The Kashmir Files” have repeatedly said it exposes what they call the “genocide” inflicted on the region’s Hindus and likened it to Hollywood’s ″Schindler’s List″ that tells the story of the Holocaust. But many critics, including some of Bollywood’s top directors, have called it divisive, full of factual inaccuracies and provocative.

Hindus lived mostly peacefully alongside Muslims for centuries across the Himalayan region of Kashmir. In the late 1980s, when Kashmir turned into a battleground, attacks and threats by militants led to the departure of most Kashmiri Hindus, who identified with India’s rule, Many believed that the rebellion was also aimed at wiping them out. It reduced the Hindus from an estimated 200,000 to a tiny minority of about 5,000 in the Kashmir Valley.

Most of the region’s Muslims, long resentful of Indian rule, deny that Hindus were systematically targeted, and say India helped them to move out in order to cast Kashmir’s freedom struggle as Islamic extremism.

According to official data, over 200 Kashmiri Hindus were killed in the last three decades of the region’s conflict. Some Hindu groups put the number much higher.

Tensions in Kashmir returned in 2019, when India’s Hindu nationalist government stripped the region’s semi-autonomy, split it into two federal territories administered by New Delhi and imposed a clampdown on free speech accompanied by widespread arrests. Kashmir has since witnessed a spate of targeted killings, including that of Hindus. Police blame anti-India rebels for the killings.

On Tuesday, “The Kashmir Files” actor Anupam Kher, who plays a protagonist, called the criticism of the film “preplanned.”

“If the Holocaust is right, then the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits is also right,” Kher said in a video posted on Twitter.

“The Kashmir Files” is directed by Vivek Agnihotri, whose previous film “The Tashkent Files” alleged a conspiracy in the death of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The film was heavily criticized for presenting unproven conspiracy theories as facts.
