A Perfect Match: Spookley Embodies the Mission of Rooterville Animal Sanctuary Where Kind Living is the Norm

At Rooterville Animal Sanctuary, kids are learning to embrace their uniqueness and spread kindness with the guidance of a square pumpkin and over 100 rescued farm animals. October is National Bullying Prevention Month and Rooterville is partnering with Spookley the Square Pumpkin to offer a unique and educational experience that combines learning about farm animals with anti-bullying lessons.

The Spookley Farm Program, inspired by “Spookley the Square Pumpkin,” teaches children about tolerance and kindness while exploring the world of agriculture. This enchanting program encourages kids to embrace their uniqueness and appreciate differences, just like Spookley, who overcomes bullying to save his friends.

Elaine West, founder of Rooterville Animal Sanctuary, is passionate about the impact of the Spookley story on young minds. These field trips provide an opportunity to help impart lasting values onto the next generation, values they will carry with them well beyond their time at her farm.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin at Rooterville offers hands-on experiences, including an anti-bullying pledge and stories about the animal residents. West believes in educating children about the origins of their food and fostering values like kindness, tolerance, and acceptance.

Beyond the rescued farm animals and butterfly garden, Rooterville is home to a hay bale maze, making it a perfect destination for family outings this fall. The animal sanctuary is open to the public every weekend.

  • Claudia Bartra Teams Up With Fusion Academy to Promote Anti-Bullying Initiative

Claudia Bartra Teams Up With Fusion Academy to Promote Anti-Bullying Initiative

Local entrepreneur and philanthropist teams up with Fusion’s three Florida campuses to stand up against bullying.

    Press Release

    Jan 24, 2023

Businesswoman and philanthropist Claudia Bartra and Fusion Academy in Miami, Boca Raton, and Palm Beach Gardens are teaming up to prevent bullying in their schools and communities.

“We’re excited to have Claudia on board,” said Christina Seamster, Ph.D., Area Head of School. “She is a great community partner and we’re thrilled to be teaming up with her for our zero-tolerance bullying initiative.”

Bartra is actively involved in the community, notably with La Granja, her successful chain of award-winning Peruvian restaurants. Her philanthropic contributions include her work with ASPIRA, a youth organization for Latin American children, providing scholarships to students attending Palm Beach State College, and being honored for her support of children’s education both in the United States and her home country of Peru. Bartra deeply values the power of education, and her collaboration with Fusion Academy is no exception.

Founded in 1989 in Solana Beach, California, Fusion Academy has 80 campuses across the U.S., including three in Florida: Boca Raton, Miami, and its most recent addition in Palm Beach Gardens. With one-to-one classrooms and personalized instruction, Fusion Academy can center every student’s needs while providing opportunities to interact with other students. During “Homework Cafe” time, students can work on homework collaboratively, play games, and eat snacks together. A student’s five-hour day at the school is built for their needs and encourages them to be the full version of themselves. Fusion campuses operate between 7:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M. which gives students flexible learning opportunities that best fit their schedules.

Every Fusion Academy location ensures each student experiences both academic and social-emotional core learner outcomes: being resourceful, critical thinking, self-awareness, and inclusivity.

Claudia Bartra and Fusion Academy want to confront the nationwide problem of bullying and provide a resource for students where they can feel comfortable in addressing their concerns to their parents and teachers. Bullying not only affects the students who are being bullied, but also the school community as a whole. According to a 2019 report by the National Center for Educational Statistics, nearly 20% of students in the United States aged 12-18 reported being bullied at school.

Together, Bartra and Fusion Academy created actionable goals to prevent bullying in the school community and beyond:

    1. Making every parent a partner in their child’s education and socio-emotional development.
    2. Providing holistic socio-emotional learning experiences.
    3. Being proactive and positive (for both teachers and students).
    4. Provide safe spaces and teacher mentors for each student.
    5. Encourage peers to come to a common resolution with openness and inquiry.
    6. Inspire positive change to be a more reflective person.
      7. Identify individual biases and prejudices to become more self-aware and diffuse tense situations.

Both Bartra and Seamster look forward to implementing the new initiative in 2023. Visit Fusion Academy for information, and to learn more about Claudia Bartra, go to www.claudiabartra.com

    Hideki and STOPit

Hideki has supported a multitude of social action programs both during and subsequent to his career as a professional baseball player. Matsui 55 Baseball Foundation, Inc. is his primary instrument of action. As the founder/director/president of the Foundation, he actively encourages healthy lifestyles for youth through the game of baseball. Hideki joins Derek Jeter and the entire STOPit team in their efforts to save children from bullying.

  • Amelia Knows How to Keep the Peace and Prevent Bullying

Amelia Knows How to Keep the Peace and Prevent Bullying

Online tips are available to teachers during October’s National Bullying Prevention Month

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 2, 2017

In support of Bullying Prevention Month, Amelia teaches students in K-8 how to keep their schools bully free. Amelia is one of six relatable characters developed over decades of research and efficacy. Each character is highly researched and evidenced backed and helps thousands of teachers impart social/emotional learning and character foundation skills. “During October, Amelia is our champion character. She is a teacher’s best tool in supporting Anti-Bullying,” said Linsey Covert the driver behind a growing cloud-based, integrated coursework (TEAMology) that builds stronger, more resilient students.

What gives Amelia her street cred? Well, let’s hear from Amelia herself. “It is ok if students don’t always agree with each other or even like each other. They just need to learn how to celebrate differences, always be respectful and productively cooperate on a TEAM. When you help students build a TEAM culture, there will be no room for bullies.”

It is ok if students don’t always agree with each other or even like each other. They just need to learn how to celebrate differences, always be respectful and productively cooperate on a TEAM. When you help students build a TEAM culture, there will be no room for bullies.

    Amelia

Dr. JoLynn Carney, Penn State University College of Education researcher, joined in the research and development of Project TEAM. “What we always suspected was that creating a positive environment by empowering the students with strong prosocial attitudes and skills would help with bullying problems, other disciplinary issues, and provide a more productive environment for learning and growing. We now have the data that applying this approach with fidelity actually works.”

Jenna St. Mars from Rostraver Elementary School in Belle Vernon, Pa has been utilizing Project TEAM in her school since the 2016-2017 school year. “The kids are really being in the house here at RES and their behavior has been fabulous since the start of the school year. We tie Amelia into our Anti-Bullying month activities very heavily. We weave her into all aspects of Bullying Prevention month as she represents inclusion and the respect for others and their differences that we want our students’ to emulate,” says Jenna.

Jen Lowe from Stafford Township SD has been using the material for over six years. “I can tell you it is worthwhile. Bullying is basically gone, and I have a better handle on my students’ emotions and how to handle them. It’s techniques we weren’t taught in school,” said Jen.

During October, TEAMology is offering tips on how to use Amelia to help students understand the value of peace, harmony and acceptance and also to give students strategies to use if faced with a bullying situation. Follow TEAMology on Facebook (TEAMology) and Twitter (@weareteamology) where all month long, Amelia will be featured along with easy to use activities and ideas for promoting Anti-Bullying.

About TEAMology: TEAMology is a culmination of decades of research and side-by-side teaching with the most renowned experts in SEL. The material uses six relatable characters and the foundations of a house called Project TEAM which teachers and students use to emulate best SEL skills and relate them to Future Ready Indexes such as career exploration practices.
