The Detroit Lions are already shuffling the roster before Week 1 even kicks off. On Saturday, the team announced three moves to help stabilize depth as injuries pile up just days before the opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Jamarco Jones Lands on Injured Reserve

The most notable move is the Detroit Lions placing offensive tackle Jamarco Jones on injured reserve. Jones had been a surprise addition to the final 53-man roster, beating out veteran Dan Skipper during camp. But durability has always been the biggest question mark with Jones, and once again, it’s become the issue.

After starting the week practicing in full, Jones popped up on the injury report Thursday with an ankle injury. By Saturday, the team had no choice but to place him on IR, meaning he’ll miss at least the first four games of the season. He’ll be eligible to return in Week 5.

Lions Sign Jacob Saylors to Active Roster

To help fill the void, Detroit signed running back Jacob Saylors to the active roster. With injuries creating uncertainty at the position, the Lions clearly want insurance behind Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Saylors impressed during preseason action with his quick burst and ability to catch passes out of the backfield, and now he’ll get a chance to prove he belongs on Sundays.

While it’s unlikely Saylors sees a heavy workload immediately, he could carve out a role on special teams or in select offensive packages, especially if the Lions want to keep Gibbs fresh against a physical Green Bay front.

Anthony Pittman Elevated for Week 1

The Lions also elevated linebacker Anthony Pittman from the practice squad for the game. Pittman, a familiar face to Detroit fans, has made a career out of being a versatile depth piece who thrives on special teams. His call-up gives the Lions extra insurance at linebacker, a position group that’s already dealing with bumps and bruises.

Pittman may not see heavy defensive snaps, but his presence on coverage units could be crucial against a Packers team that leans on field position and special teams to create momentum.
