Earlier, when Salman Khan's movie Tiger 3 made its cinematic debut, the actor's fans were seen burning firecrackers in a crowded cinema hall. But despite his fierce reaction to the act, Animal fans have now repeated the same and burst crackers inside a theater.
Fans burst firecrackers inside theater amid Animal screening
The hype around Ranbir Kapoor's action-drama movie Animal was finally met when it was released on the big screen. While the excitement and enthusiasm of the actor's fans could be seen in the way they were showing love for it, they went to the extent of burning firecrackers inside a cinema in the presence of several moviegoers during the screening.
In a video that surfaced online, a couple of people can be seen holding a blazing gun and burning a cracker when Bobby Deol and Ranbir Kapoor came together during the epic climax of the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial.
Take a look:
Salman Khan reacted to fans burning crackers during Tiger 3 screening
Earlier, a similar incident happened when excited Salman Khan fans set off rockets and burst firecrackers in a cinema hall in Mumbai during his entry in the Maneesh Sharma directorial film. Amid all the cheering and whistling, the fireworks went on for almost a minute in a crowded theater where people could be seen dodging the shots. The video of the same went viral.
However, Salman addressed the issue after the incident and condemned the act on his social media. The Tiger 3 actor wrote, “Request all my fans not to take firecrackers inside the auditorium as it could prove to be a huge fire hazard thereby endangering your lives and also others. My request to theatre owners is not to allow firecrackers to be taken inside the cinema and security should stop them from doing so at the entry point. Enjoy the film by all means but please please avoid this is my request to all my fans. Thank u.”
Soon after the shocking incident, the Mumbai police registered an FIR in the case and two people were also detained.

‘Animal’ Review: Sandeep Reddy Vanga Conducts Another Blood-Soaked Hymn to Heroic Excess
[ad_1]
A movie directed by the berserk “Muppet Show” character known as Animal couldn’t be any more unruly than Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s new film of that title. This sporadically fun but exhausting hot mess provides 202 minutes of hyperventilating overkill for star Ranbir Kapoor as a tycoon’s favorite son whose anger-management (as well as daddy) issues are off the charts. Contrastingly notable for their absence are emotional depth, narrative cogency or non-scatological humor — lacks that much ultra-violence and a surprising amount of sexual content can only distract from so much over such a long, bombastic, shallow course.
Nonetheless, the over-the-top intensity pushed for nearly three and a half hours is likely to impress many viewers. That’s being counted on as “Animal” opens this weekend on the largest number of U.S. screens for any Indian feature to date.
Its combination of elaborate slaughter and a cartoonishly macho, borderline-insane hero sometimes recalls Brian De Palma’s take on “Scarface.” But this writer-director’s third film is basically a supersized version of his prior efforts, 2017’s Telugu-language surprise hit “Arjun Reddy” and its 2019 Hindi remake “Kabir Singh,” with very similar basic character dynamics. Here, instead of a brilliant surgeon with prodigious appetites and no impulse control, we’ve got the problem child of a business tycoon who similarly crashes through life like the proverbial bull in a china shop.
Ranvijay Singh (Kapoor), often simply called “Hero” because even at 200+ minutes this movie has no time for subtlety, is eldest offspring to Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor), a steel and oil magnate who’s the richest man in India. As dad is usually too busy to do the honors, Vijay aka Hero appoints himself man of the house from an early age, taking this role very seriously if not at all wisely. That means, for instance, that when he learns a sister is being bullied at college, he simply storms into a lecture hall with a machine gun, then runs down the motorcycle-riding perps with his SUV.
These antics get him sent to the U.S. for a spell. He returns no less hotheaded, promptly stealing another man’s bride (Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali) just before her wedding because he had a crush on her once. She doesn’t object — like everyone here, she’s simultaneously appalled and hypnotized by this towering he-man’s force of personality, which he laboriously explains in lectures about “alpha” masculinity. The film comes closest to openly ridiculing its own swaggering lifestyle fantasy when their honeymoon on a private plane he’s flying (is there anything he can’t do?!?) includes long stretches where they make love in the cabin — while no one is piloting.
Following another stint in America, the couple return after Singh Sr. is nearly killed by unknown assassins. Needless to say, Hero immediately goes into full Seeker of Deadly Revenge mode. Drastically increasing the family’s security by drafting a small army of hitherto-estranged relatives, he uncovers hidden foes who eventually include a deceitful in-law (Siddhant Karnick), his coldblooded hatchet man (Babloo Prithiveeraj), and finally a distant cousin (Bobby Deol) acting on a grudge dating back generations.
When “superstar” (as he’s duly billed) Kapoor and the equally pumped-up Deol go mano-a-mano for a climactic face-off on an airport tarmac in Scotland, of all places, the effect is like nothing so much as an update of the pec-tacular grapplings between bodybuilders in old Italian sword-and-sandal adventures. But most of the violence here is of a more 21st-century, gang-war type, bullets raining like confetti. The biggest such set-piece (just before an intermission title) is an enjoyably preposterous shoot-’em-up in a luxury hotel where Vijay almost singlehandedly mows down 300 assailants. This sequence also features the film’s only bit where characters actually burst into song. Otherwise, the tracks featured by a host of T-Series artists are just “background” … if you can apply that term to music with frequent massive beats played at deafening volume.
Like nearly every factor here, the songs and blood-soaked interludes alike are not without skill, but get kick-dropped into an inorganic whole uninterested in integrating them to sustained, logical or emotionally credible effect. The film has two blunt major themes: the father wound (Hero has a perpetual chip on his shoulder from dad’s childhood neglect) and “a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.”
Never mind that these contrastingly weepy and gory motivations are somewhat at odds, or that they sometimes stop the hectic progress dead in its tracks for labored, accusatory and/or self-justifying debates. But they don’t even manage to unify a short-attention-spanned narrative that’s all over the map, leaving gaps and bizarre focal choices in its wake. (For example: When Vijay wakes from a coma, the movie spends inordinate time dwelling on the details of his urinary catheter.)
Then there’s the whole issue of toxic masculinity, which Vanga’s previous efforts were decried for celebrating. “Animal” is too ridiculous to take grave offense at, but it does offer a caricature of chest-thumping masculinity, equal parts 007, Godfather, Hercules and Leatherface, that plays like the fantasy of manosphere celebrities like Andrew Tate. Our “Hero” uses a concept of innate “alpha” supremacy to defend everything from picking unnecessary fights to cheating on his wife (with Tripti Dimri as a late-arriving damsel in distress).
Lethally reckless as his actions are, not to mention stressful for his loved ones, the film always agrees he’s in the right. After all, he’s a lion! There’s no room to pity the gazelles who must tiptoe around him. And it’s hard to know just what to make of scenes like the one in which Vijay addresses his father’s workers like a Dear Leader at a fascist rally — “Animal” constantly pushes toward self-parody, yet it seems an irony-free zone.
The result is not boring, but it is draining, and sometimes almost awe-inspiringly dumb. Design contributions are strong, as is fight/splatter choreography of Supreme Sundar. But they aren’t really taken full advantage of by the film’s overall music-video aesthetic, which is cluttered without being especially stylish. Harshavardhan Rameshwar’s original instrumental score never shrinks from underlining every already-obvious nuance with a sonic exclamation point.
As for the performances, they too give their all, when much less would have been “more” … though that could only have happened in a different film. If crying and yelling were Olympian events, much gold would be won here. “Animal” is a beast that prides itself on serving up too much of everything, not banquet-style but more like a messy trough. Naturally, it ends with a teaser for a sequel in which we’re promised even grislier splatterifics, while beautiful women cower in terror and quivering admiration.

Animal Movie Review
[ad_1]
2.5/5
Ranvijay Singh (Ranbir Kapoor) is the hotheaded son of super rich industrialist Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor). He’s super protective of his family and loves his father to death. That trait is shown early on, when as a schoolboy, he takes on the bullies who were troubling his college-bound sister. Growing up, he understands his father is never going to accept him the way he is. He finds time to marry the love of his life, Geetanjali (Rashmika Mandanna), scoots off to the US and has two children. Then, daddy dearest becomes the target of an assassination attempt. The dutiful son comes roaring back after eight years to set things right and kills around 300 people doing so. In between, he goes to Punjab to mend ties with an estranged branch of the family, so they can lend their sons to help him win the war. The boys have lots of tons with their toys – one of them is a giant gun mounted on a motor.
All this happens before the interval. Now, the film practically ends at this point and if the director had done that, we would have left with a one-and-a-half hour long, slick actioner. But he doesn’t do the needful and needlessly stretches it to another two hours. We are made to repetitively witness more mayhem.
The film is a homage to the hero worship every boy feels for his dad as a kid. Most of us slowly let go of that feeling as we grow up, and start seeing our fathers as beings of mere flesh and bone. This leads to a better relationship, a healthier relationship, with our parents as we age. But Ranvijay is shown to be having the emotional depth of a five year old when it comes to dealing with his father. He puts his father on the same pedestal as God, or even higher. He doesn’t share the same equation with his mother, mind you. She’s a mere mortal, perhaps, as he says in the film, it’s a man’s world.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga was criticised for having men raise their hand against women in both Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh. Here we have Rashmika giving in to anger and slapping Ranbir. That’s Vanga’s way of making things right. Take it or leave it. The film worships at the temple of toxic masculinity, what with phallic humour galore and women being treated as mere sex objects. There’s a scene where Ranbir is celebrating his successful heart surgery by roaming around buff naked in the lawns, to put things in perspective.
All that aside, we never could imagine what prompted the director to make this vastly self-indulgent film. Maybe it was an experiment to turn Ranbir Kapoor into an action star. Perhaps to see how good he looks with Rashmika or with Triptii Dimri. Perhaps it was to resurrect Bobby Deol’s film career. Well, Ranbir’s such a good actor that he makes even leave-your-mind-at-home action look easy on the eye. And he does look good with both Rashmika and Triptii. And there’s no doubt that Bobby still has a great screen persona. But do these positives justify three hours and 21 minutes of runtime? Some scenes feel like they were written on the fly. The editing, the continuity is the least troubled department. The film is shot well and has some good songs to its credit but the story, screenplay and direction departments clearly needed a firmer guidance.
There have been films like Shakti (1982), revolving around tumultuous father-son relationships. Perhaps Sandeep Reddy Vanga should have gone back to the classic or sat with its director Ramesh Sippy to get a grip on how it’s done. Because Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor are two of our finest actors. And both have acted out of their skulls in this film. Their scenes together are the soul of the film. But even the finest talent can’t do much in the face of bad writing. It’s painful to watch their talent being used in such a way. The trailer of the film was so finely cut that it raised expectations sky high. The end product, sadly, just doesn’t match up to the hype.
Watch Animal to see Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor rising above the ridiculous to give a sublime performance.
Trailer : Animal

2.5/5
Animal Synopsis: Having craved for his rich father’s (Anil Kapoor) love and attention all his life, an unhinged Vijay (Ranbir Kapoor) gets obsessive and violent when his dad is attacked. Seeking revenge and hunting down the conspirators become his only aim. Picture Godfather on steroids, devoid of its psychological tension.
Animal Review: Blood is thicker than water according to the film’s protagonist. The safety and unity of family is sacrosanct no matter how twisted the relations. We are even led to believe that dysfunctional is better than broken.
Through an exhausting runtime of 3 hours, 21 minutes, comprising extreme bloodshed, testosterone and blatant misogyny, writer-director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for his controversial statements and thoughts, glorifies the alpha male once again through his Godfather-esque tale.
When his father is shot, Vijay declares himself as the ‘man of the house’ and takes matters into his own hands. He assures his father that he’ll safeguard their steel empire and family’s legacy, but revenge first. He seduces Geetanjali (Rashmika Mandana), through his toxic macho traits. “Don’t call me bhaiyya. I don’t have brotherly feelings for you.” He compliments her childbearing hips and like Christian Grey, whisks her away in his private jet for some high-altitude dom/sub love making. “You were the bottom, you didn’t have to do much”, he comments after. He even expects her to forgive his infidelity because she forgives his other crimes, anyway.
Even as Vanga’s take on women or violence unsettle you massively, those are his preferences for a protagonist as a director, and he is free to have them. The issue is lack of purpose in the story. His gun wielding angry young man comes across as a pointless rebel without a cause. What is fuelling his fire and the rage within? The father-son discord that forms the crux of the story itself stays unexplored. Barring Ranbir, the story barely invests in other characters, turning them into silent spectators including the very talented Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol. AK is excellent in the confrontational scenes and Bobby looks menacing, but both get reduced to cardboard characters.
Cocky, broken, and problematic characters can be celebrated if they have a reason strong enough to explain the mayhem if not justify. Vijay has none and in the absence of it, Animal ends up as all swag and no substance derailed family drama.
Action, background score and music work well with the mood of the film. What works the most however is Ranbir Kapoor’s raw sex appeal and unmatched intensity. You find yourself trapped in his troubled mind as his blood-soaked eyes seethe with rage. His ability to become the character he plays shocks, stuns, and draws you in each frame. He lends that dangerously unpredictable quality to this deranged character and aces it especially in that Vaastav like crucial climax scene. Sadly, the story does little for him though.
Ranbir Kapoor can be Joaquin Phoenix but Animal’s no Joker. This entire film could have just been a conversation between the father and his son.

Ex-Palo Alto cop pleads guilty to 2018 assault during arrest. Colleagues called him ‘The Fuse’
[ad_1]
A retired Palo Alto police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to assaulting a gay man during a 2018 arrest, according to the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office.
Wayne Benitez, 66, who prosecutors say was known among his former colleagues as “The Fuse,” had slammed the 42-year-old man’s face against a car windshield and then failed to disclose his actions in his police report. As part of a plea deal, Benitez will be sentenced to 750 hours of community service and required to complete anger management and LGBTQ+ sensitivity training.
The assault occurred on Feb. 17, 2018, at Buena Vista Mobile Home Park.
Benitez was one of several officers arresting the man, whose name was not released, on suspicion of having driven with a suspended license. Benitez slammed the man into the windshield of his own car.
“See how quickly they behave once we put our foot down?” Benitez is heard saying on body-camera video of the arrest, according to prosecutors. “And that’s what we don’t do enough of.”
After the victim complained that the assault made him bleed, Benitez said: “You’re going to be bleeding a whole lot more.”
In his report, Benitez said he only used force when pulling the man from his trailer at the mobile home park, prosecutors said. But security video from the scene captured the assault, as did the body-camera video from the arrest.
“When someone with a badge breaks the law, it cracks the confidence that people have in law enforcement,” Santa Clara County Dist. Atty. Jeff Rosen said in a statement. “That is not just unfortunate. It is unacceptable. No one is above the law.”
The man’s charges were later dismissed by the district attorney’s office. The case was investigated by the Santa Clara County district attorney’s public and law enforcement integrity team.

World Dog Alliance: South Korea on Track to Enact Dog Meat Ban Legislation by the End of This Year
[ad_1]
SEOUL, South Korea, November 16, 2023 (Newswire.com)
–
The World Dog Alliance (WDA) is pleased to announce a significant milestone in the fight against the dog meat trade in South Korea. Following a bipartisan letter from members of the U.S. Congress, sent to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Aug. 7, 2023, urging the country to ban the consumption of dog meat, South Korea is making substantial progress towards enacting legislation to ban this barbaric practice.
Within just one month of the U.S. congressional letter, South Korean First Lady Kim Keon-hee attended a press conference organized by local animal welfare organizations, publicly endorsing legislation to ban dog meat consumption. This endorsement underscores the proactive steps being taken by the South Korean government to expedite the legislative process. Bills to ban dog meat consumption have received broad support from both the ruling and opposition parties. It is anticipated that this legislation will be passed in early December this year.
Since 2014, the World Dog Alliance has been actively involved in global efforts to protect the rights of dogs. Our work in South Korea, a nation where the dog meat industry has been prevalent, has been particularly noteworthy. In 2014, the WDA’s founder Genlin traveled to South Korea to film a documentary titled “Eating Happiness,” shedding light on the grim reality of the dog meat trade and urging global attention to the issue.
In 2016, the World Dog Alliance launched an online petition on the UK Parliament website, calling on the UK to exert diplomatic pressure on the South Korean Government to stop dog meat consumption, especially in light of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The campaign garnered over 100,000 signatures from UK citizens. This significant public outcry raised awareness about the issue and played a pivotal role in shutting down Moran market, the biggest dog meat market in South Korea, marking crucial progress in the effort to abolish the dog meat trade.
In 2017, the WDA organized a symposium in the South Korean parliament titled “Explicit Legislation to Ban Dog Meat,” inviting South Korean lawmakers to discuss the formulation of laws to prohibit the dog meat trade.
In 2018, the WDA hosted a large-scale event at Seoul City Hall with the theme “I Am Not Food,” aimed at raising awareness about the issue of dog meat. At this event, Tory, the beloved dog of then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in, made a special appearance. Genlin’s letter, appealing for the end of the dog meat industry, was personally delivered to President Moon, catalyzing the subsequent government actions.
The World Dog Alliance commends the South Korean government for taking action to address the dog meat issue, a move that significantly enhances the country’s international image.

New species with “hieroglyphic” pattern discovered among sand dunes
[ad_1]
A brand new lizard species with a hieroglyphic pattern on its back has been discovered among the sand dunes in eastern Iran.
The discovery, which was detailed in a study in the journal Zootaxa on November 10, was made back in 2010 in the South Khorasan province of the desert, while researchers were conducting a survey for local reptiles and amphibians.
The researchers found a total of 10 strange-looking lizards in the sand dunes, all with an unusual pattern on their skin. They discovered that it was actually an entirely new species, now named Eremias graphica, or the “hieroglyphic racerunner lizard.”
The new species is named using the Greek word “graphikos,” according to the study, as reported by the Miami Herald. This translates to either “drawn” or “written,” and was used because of the lizard’s strange pattern which resembles hieroglyphs.
Eskandar Rasegar-Pouyani, Valentina Orlova, Khosrow Rajabizadeh, Hossein Nabizadeh, Nikolay Poyarkov, Daniel Melnikov and Roman Nazarov
Hieroglyphs are generally associated with Ancient Egypt, though other forms of writing also exited at the time.
The researchers found that most of the lizards were about 7 inches long and were easily disguised in the sand dunes due to their sandy coloring, according to the study.
The researchers, who are from multiple organizations from across Russia and Iran, analyzed 93 genetic samples from the lizards in the desert.
“We hypothesize that the diversification of the Eremias fasciata species complex was largely influenced by the fragmentation of sand massifs in the region,” an abstract from the study read. “This same hypothesis has been used to explain the high level of endemism among the sand-dwelling species of reptiles along the Iranian Plateau in the same area. The two new species described herein can be distinguished from other congeneric species by their phylogenetic position and a combination of morphological characters. The study noted that the lizards can mainly be found scuttling around the vegetation found in the sand dunes, the Miami Herald reported. They can also be found burrowing for shade and shelter. The researchers reported that they typically eat insects.
Closer analysis of the creature showed that it was most active during some hours in the morning, and evening. During the rest of the day, it tends to hide under the bushes of the sand dunes.
So far, the new species has only been found near one road near the city of Tabas, in central-eastern Iran.

Animal song Papa Meri Jaan reveals Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor’s complex father-son relationship
[ad_1]
After unveiling two songs Hua Mein and Satranga, the makers of Animal have released a new song titled Papa Meri Jaan.
Check out the song here:
Papa Meri Jaan is sung by Sonu Nigam, composed by Harshavardhan Rameshwar, and has lyrics written by Raj Shekhar.
This heartfelt song gives us a glimpse into the profound bond between a father and son, portrayed by Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. It explores their relationship from the son’s childhood, highlighting Anil Kapoor’s character as an absent father.
The song portrays Ranbir’s character’s admiration for Anil since childhood and how their dynamic has evolved over time. The music video also offers a glimpse at Gitanjali, played by Rashmika Mandanna, who loves and encourages Ranbir’s character.
The final scene, which shows a battered and injured Ranbir taking charge of the plane’s controls with a look of despair, adds an interesting layer to the story

Animal is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles. The film is set to be released on December 1, 2023.

California attorney general countersues family whose goat was slaughtered after they backed out of auction
[ad_1]
The legal battle over a 9-year-old’s pet goat that was slaughtered after her family backed out of the Shasta District Fair continued this week after California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta’s office countersued the girl’s mother, blaming her for the ordeal and saying she should pay the defense’s legal fees.
In a Tuesday countersuit filed in federal court in Sacramento, Bonta’s office asked that the lawsuit over the goat named Cedar be dismissed, saying that the girl’s mother, Jessica Long, signed a contract when she entered the animal in the livestock auction. The counterclaim also said that Long should pay for the legal fees of the defense and that the federal court doesn’t have jurisdiction over the incident.
Under the contract Long signed, according to the court filing, she agreed that she wouldn’t hold the Shasta fair responsible for any injury or damage.
“Jessica Long has a duty to defend defendants/counter-claimants as officers, agents, and/or employees of the Shasta County District Fair under the terms of the contract,” according to the state attorney general’s filing.
The ordeal began when Long bought the goat for her daughter to enter into the 4-H program, which teaches children how to raise farm animals that are eventually entered into an auction to be sold and slaughtered.
When it came time for Cedar to be auctioned off, however, Long’s daughter couldn’t go through with it and “sobbed in her pen with her goat,” Long wrote to the Shasta County fair’s manager on June 17.
Long begged the fair to let her daughter keep Cedar, despite the goat having already been sold at auction for $902 to state Sen. Brian Dahle (R-Bieber). She also offered to repay the fair district and the bidder whatever costs had been incurred.
But fair officials refused, threatened to call police and rebuffed Long’s attempt to find another outcome for Cedar.
“Making an exception for you will only teach [our] youth that they do not have to abide by the rules,” Shasta District Fair Chief Executive Melanie Silva wrote to Long in an email. “Also, in this era of social media this has been a negative experience for the fairgrounds as this has been all over Facebook and Instagram.”
Long took Cedar to a farm in Sonoma County because she and her family live in a residential area in Shasta County and are unable to keep farm animals there. Fair officials then contacted the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.
Armed with a search warrant, authorities took possession of the animal and returned it for slaughter.
Long then filed a federal lawsuit last year against the county and Shasta District Fair officials, saying that they violated her daughter’s 4th and 14th Amendment rights and committed an “egregious waste of police resources” when detectives from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office drove more than 500 miles across Northern California to try to find the goat.

Sofia Exarchou On Returning To Greece With Her Buzzy Feature ‘Animal’ & The Filmmaking Community Created From The Country’s Financial Crash — Thessaloniki
[ad_1]
Seven years after her skillful debut Park, which played Toronto and San Sebastian, where it won the New Directors Award, Greek filmmaker Sofia Exarchou has returned with her sophomore outing.
Animal, which Exarchou directed from a screenplay she also penned, follows a group of young seasonal performers who provide entertainment at one of Greece’s many all-inclusive island resorts. Kalia (Dimitra Vlagopoulou), returning for her ninth year on the resort, is the leader of the pack, but she’s starting to crack. As the summer intensifies and the work pressure builds up, their nights become violent, and Kalia’s struggle is revealed. But when the spotlights turn on again, the show must go on.
The pic debuted in competition at Locarno, where Vlagopoulou took the Pardo Award for Best Performance. Since then, Animal has been one of the year’s buzziest arthouse titles, screening across the festival circuit and picking up awards. Next week, Exarchou returns home, with the film making its Greek debut at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Below, the filmmaker speaks to Deadline about why she decided to make a feature about the dark side behind the Greek tourism industry, how a win in Locarno has changed the perception of her work back home, and how a fruitful filmmaking community was created out of Greece’s financial troubles.
DEADLINE: Sofia, you’ve been on the road with ‘Animal’ all year. How are you feeling?
SOFIA EXARCHOU: We went to Locarno, Sarajevo, Montreal, and Vancouver, where we won Best Film. Then Haifa, and now it’s actually starting to become too much. I’m going Spain, Viennale, Thessaloniki, Mannheim, Brussels. It’ll keep going until the summer, and it’s nice. It’s a good feeling to see your film is traveling and people are enjoying it.
DEADLINE: Have you noticed a change in attitudes toward you and your work following the win at Locarno?
EXARCHOU: I did also pick up awards with Park, my first feature. It won Best New Director at San Sebastian. But yes, I don’t know why, but with this film, I have felt a change in attitude. Perhaps it’s because of Locarno. We’ve also had very good reviews. It’s already been covered nicely in Greece, even though we haven’t screened it here yet. Maybe it’s also the film’s theme because it’s about tourism, and all Greek people have some relationship with that. People from the industry are happy for me, and it has changed how they perceive my work. But let’s wait until after Thessaloniki and the distribution in Greece.
DEADLINE: How are you feeling about bringing the film home?
EXARCHOU: I’m excited. Firstly, most of the cast and crew are coming from Athens to watch the film together. We’re going to be a big gang of more than 40 people. Many of them haven’t seen the film yet because we didn’t have the time to set up a private screening. I’m excited to be in my country, although it’s sometimes stressful. It’s a totally different feeling. You’re not among foreigners. You’re among people who you have worked with and family friends, and you want them to like it. It also feels like the end of the film’s journey, you know. I’ve done this film. I shot it. And now it’s screened in my country.
DEADLINE: What would be a success in Greece for you with ‘Animal’?
EXARCHOU: Well, we worry about the film’s distribution. It’s tough here for Greek films to do well in the cinemas. But that would be something that I would like to happen. I would enjoy people in my country going to the cinemas to watch the film. Of course, I enjoy going to festivals, but it’s different. Communicating with audiences in Greece would be a success for me.
DEADLINE: Can you tell me a little about the genesis behind the film’s story?
EXARCHOU: I started writing the script because I wanted to make a movie about work and working systems. From there, it was obvious to me that if I wanted to talk about work in Greece, the tourism industry would be the core of it. This led me to the idea of performers working in a hotel during the summer. Suddenly, it all made sense with the notion of entertainment, which, for me, is intriguing in capitalism: The idea of how we need to keep people entertained all day to keep the system rolling.
DEADLINE: Despite the financial hardships and volatile political environment, it feels like there has been a fruitful new filmmaking wave in Greece. What has it been like working in these conditions?
EXARCHOU: It has been difficult. We had an economic crisis, and many things changed in the industry. I started working before the crisis. It was much easier to make films and to work in films with good salaries. With the crisis, it was almost impossible to have a job. On the other hand, we built a small community because of all the struggle. Everybody was helping each other. Plus, sometimes, when everything is collapsing, an energy is created where you want to present your universe to the world. You have this anger and stress, which is a big motivation for an artist.
DEADLINE: What’s next for you?
EXARCHOU: I still have some work on Animal. We took it to Locarno very quickly, so a lot of promotion hasn’t been done. We’re now working on a trailer and a poster. I have an idea for a new project, but I need to relax first. I feel quite drained after all these years of work, especially the last two. It’s really important to recharge the batteries in your brain before beginning a screenplay, which is the most difficult step in the creation.

Antelope Valley expecting 4th morning in a row with freezing temps
[ad_1]
Freezing temperatures are again expected across the Antelope Valley early Thursday, the fourth morning in a row with weather officials warning of the potential for dangerously cold weather.
Since Monday, the Antelope Valley has been under a freeze warning during the early morning hours, said Joe Sirard, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Oxnard.
“This will be the fourth night in a row of subfreezing temperatures out there.”
Sirard said the freezes were slightly early in the season, but not entirely unprecedented.
Low temperatures are forecast at 30 degrees from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday. The freeze warning is also in effect for the Salinas Valley in coastal Central California.
“There’s always a chance that pipes could freeze if people don’t prepare,” Sirard said. He said sensitive vegetation could also be at risk in the cold, and the official alert noted that “extended exposure to cold can cause hypothermia for animals and people.”
It wasn’t immediately clear how shelters in the area were preparing, if at all, for another morning of frigid temperatures.
The Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority has a winter shelter program that began Wednesday, but the two participating shelters located in the Antelope Valley — one in Lancaster and one in Palmdale — were not scheduled to not be open until later this week or next month.

L.A. Zoo helps launch first-of-its-kind network to combat wildlife trafficking
[ad_1]
Ninja poked his head out from under his shell and nibbled away at food scraps next to a podium at the Los Angeles Zoo as Chief Executive and Director Denise Verret made a landmark announcement.
The radiated tortoise, who was confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service alongside dozens of other critically endangered, trafficked reptiles and brought to the zoo in 1998, is now “thriving and healthy,” Verret said.
Ninja is one of 50 animals at the Los Angeles Zoo that were placed there after being confiscated — a success story that officials hope will be replicated by the first-of-its-kind program announced Friday: the Southern California Wildlife Confiscations Network.

The partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Assn. of Zoos and Aquariums aims to simplify the placement of confiscated animals by having a regional point of contact for wildlife enforcement officers to find trusted animal care facilities. The logistics of finding placement for a confiscated animal can be a challenge for federal wildlife officers, who must also juggle the trafficking investigation.
In the past, wildlife enforcement agents have had to rely on informal contacts and relationships with local zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries and wildlife rescues.
Under the wildlife confiscations network, a pilot program that officials plan to replicate nationwide beginning next year, a newly established confiscations coordinator will note the specific housing needs of the species involved and refer to a list of “fully vetted and permitted professional animal care facilities in the region to determine which can meet the case needs.”
Matthew Martin, assistant special agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said the partnership will help authorities “free up time and follow up on investigative leads while they’re still fresh.”

Wildlife trafficking is often thought of as something that happens in “far away places like Africa, Asia or Australia,” said Dan Ashe, president of the Assn. of Zoos and Aquariums, “but it’s very much an American problem as well.”
Southern California is an epicenter for the trafficking of wild animals, often smuggled for the illegal pet trade and regularly moved through ports of entry, he said.
For at least the last decade, Martin said, U.S. native turtles have been exported overseas.
At the southern border, he said, the Fish and Wildlife Service has intercepted a lot of trafficked sea cucumbers and swim bladders from totoaba fish, an endangered species since 1979.

(Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)
At ports of entry or exit such as Los Angeles International Airport or a U.S. Postal Service facility, Fish and Wildlife officials search incoming shipments of permitted live animals to ensure there isn’t any activity of illegal trade. Inspectors check labels and open boxes, and if the shipment matches its documentation, it is sealed up and ready to be transported to its destination. For extra assurance, a trained K-9 is also on scene to sniff out any smuggled animals.
In 2022, Fish and Wildlife special agents and the service’s law enforcement partners investigated more than 10,000 wildlife trafficking cases and collected more than $11 million in criminal penalties.
“Illegal wildlife trafficking, whether driven by profit or personal gain, has devastating consequences for our environment and biodiversity,” said Verret of the Los Angeles Zoo.
The global issue puts countless species on the brink of extinction and affects entire ecosystems, she said, and officials are hopeful that the Southern California Wildlife Confiscations Network will help them focus on stamping out the illegal trade.
From 2015 to 2019, the Assn. of Zoos and Aquariums noted, federal authorities had 834 cases of live wildlife that was refused clearance, including 48,793 individual animals and plants that required placement. Los Angeles led the nation in number of cases, with 177.
