Scientists found an “alien-faced” animal on a mountain in Tanzania and discovered a new species, a study said. Photo shows a representative mountain.

On a mountain in Tanzania, an “alien-faced” creature walked along on its countless legs. Suddenly, the ground underneath the animal seemed to give out, and it fell into a trap.
Scientists picked up their catch — and discovered a new species.
Researchers ventured into the mountains of the eastern African country as part of the Forest Restoration and Climate Experiment, according to a study published Jan. 22 in the European Journal of Taxonomy. The project evaluates the health of a forest through the study of captured insects and millipedes.
While surveying the Udzungwa Mountains, researchers checked their pitfall traps and found dozens of millipedes that didn’t match any known records, the study said.
They took a closer look at the animals and realized they’d discovered a new species: Udzungwastreptus marianae, or Marian’s millipede.
Marian’s millipedes can have up to 44 body segments and reach about 1.7 inches in length, researchers said. They have “small” eyes and “short” antennae on their heads.

Study co-author Andrew Marshall described the new species as “alien-faced” with “about 200 legs,” according to a Feb. 1 news release from the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia.

Researchers said they named the new species after María Ángeles (Marian) Ramos, a “Spanish zoologist, close project partner and friend of (lead co-author Henrick Enghoff) through decades” who died in 2023.
Marian’s millipedes were found in the forest soil in three areas of the Udzungwa Mountains, the study said. These mountains are about 180 miles southwest of Tanzania’s largest city of Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania is along the eastern coast of Africa. It borders eight countries including: Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.
The new species was identified by its legs, body segments, genitalia and other subtle physical features, the study said. Researchers classified it as a new genus, Udzungwastreptus, named after the mountain area where it was discovered.
The research team included Henrik Enghoff, Alain Ngute, Revocatus Kwezaura, Richard Laizzer, Herman Lyatuu, Waziri Mhagawale, Hamidu Mnendendo and Andrew Marshall.
The team also discovered four more new species of millipede.

Forget what you were taught in elementary school about the supposed ravenous meat-eating grizzly bear: New research has found that California’s extinct bear was actually more of a vegetarian.
“California’s historical record misrepresented” the animal and humans are largely to blame, researchers say.
The grizzly bear was previously portrayed as a massive hypercarnivore, an animal whose diet is more than 70% meat, and a danger to public safety, according to recently published research in The Royal Society.
California was home to as many as 10,000 bears before the Gold Rush in 1848, so numerous that a grizzly is emblazoned on the flag of California. But the grizzly was last seen in California in 1924 and became extinct so quickly there are very few natural history notes available and fewer than 100 historical skins and skeletons in existence, according to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
But there is an abundance of written historical archives of the grizzly, said Peter Alagona, co-author of the report. As a historian and an ecologist, he said reading and trying to interpret these archives raised a lot of questions for him.
In historical accounts, including available newspaper reports, researchers found that grizzlies were “accused of attacking people and preying on the livestock that proliferated on the open range during California’s Spanish Mission and Mexican Rancho eras,” the report stated. Such stories played a large role in molding the public’s perception of the bear in a mostly negative light.
“It’s surprising in the context of the historical sources which really portrayed an entirely different animal, an animal that was very much a product of people’s minds [contrary] to what the creature was actually out there doing in the wild,” Alagona said.
Alagona, a historian and ecologist at UC Santa Barbara, said the research has a mix of paleontology, history, geography and biology and the information is “holding up a mirror to us and telling us about our own perceptions about the way in which we look at other animals, we’re often seeing reflections of ourselves.”
The recent study didn’t focus on the bear’s alleged predatory behaviors against people, but it did find that when ranchers and farmers raised free-range livestock, grizzlies remained largely herbivorous.
Alagona argued the Spanish caused the bears to become more carnivorous by bringing their livestock to California.
The report states that colonial land uses that began in 1769 led grizzlies to moderately increase animal protein consumption. Even so, grizzlies still consumed far less livestock than otherwise claimed, according to the report.
After studying the artifacts of grizzly skulls and teeth, food resources in the region and human activity, researchers found that the bears derived less than 10% of their nutrition from other mammals and were therefore largely herbivorous for a period ahead of the first European arrival in 1542.
The study even compared the grizzlies’ diet with that of present-day brown bears living in Mediterranean climates whose diet is dominated by plants. Brown bears are wide-ranging omnivores with diets that vary seasonally, inter-annually and geographically.
In terms of its massive stature, historians got that wrong too.
Adult grizzly bears have been assumed to reach about 4.5 feet at the shoulder and 8 feet tall when standing, according to California’s Capitol Museum. State records show female bears weigh about 400 pounds and males 1,000 pounds, but they could reach 2,000 pounds. Researchers say that by their estimations, the species never made it to the purported historically huge proportions.
“Being able to work together with paleontologists, paleobiologists enabled us to see the story in an entirely new way and really in some ways rewrite the historical ecology of grizzlies in California,” Alagona said.

Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s brother and co-screenwriter Pranay Reddy Vanga was recently caught in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla talking about the recent success of Animal and their future projects.
In the interview, Pranay Reddy was asked about his future project with Allu Arjun which was earlier announced with T-Series bankrolling the project. Vanga revealed “It was just an announcement. Like Bhushan ji wanted us to associate, we haven’t discussed a story but it is just a placeholder.”
He added, “Allu Arjun has a couple of movies to do and so do we. After that, we’ll work together. We just have an understanding now, but haven’t thought of anything else.”
He further added “The only advantage about Animal Park is that all the characters are established, so it won’t take much time to take it forward, but for Allu Arjun’s project we have to think of something which suits his image and we have to develop it. Sandeep takes a sweet amount of time, we don’t know when we’ll do it but it’s definitely on the cards.”
Pranay Reddy also talked about his brother’s next film with Prabhas in the lead role. The film titled Spirit is also bankrolled by Bhushan Kumar under the banner of T-Series and according to his words, the film will feature Prabhas as a cop for the very first time and most probably much like Vanga’s previous characters, he will also be an angry young man. The film is expected to go on floors in six months.

There were many unforgettable and intriguing scenes in Animal. However, the final showdown between Ranbir Kapoor and Bobby Deol tops them all. Earlier, Bobby shared that there was a scene in which his character would kiss Ranbir. Now, Sandeep Reddy Vanga revealed why it was deleted from the movie.
During a conversation with Galatta Plus Sandeep Reddy Vanga shared that Bobby Deol’s villainous character was to kiss Ranbir Kapoor on the cheek and say, ‘Bhai, I didn’t even spend one day with my father’ and then return to open his zip. Talking about the final showdown scene, he added, “It was superb when we were shooting, but I felt like the kiss was diluting the zip.”
However, the scene was edited later. Reasoning why the scene never made through the cuts, Sandeep Reddy Vanga said, “Why I removed it was because Bobby sir gave this expression with a smirk, and a tear falls down his cheek. I felt that was a bigger cinematic high than coming and kissing.”
Further on, the Kabir Singh filmmaker spoke about the seeti-maar moment where Ranvijay unzips his pants. Sandeep opined, “When he pulls his zip, there was a clear indication that his entire heroism might die in the climax. But the way Ranbir looks, and even he has tears, and the way he removes the cover of the knife, the way he took a turn, and the sunset is happening, all that really helped the scene. Superb it was.”
While talking to The Quint, Bobby spoke about the kissing scene in Animal. Even though it was edited, the actor said that it might be included when it makes its OTT debut which would be lengthier than the movie itself. The actor said, “He (Sandeep Reddy Vanga) said, ‘You’re fighting, and you suddenly kiss him (Ranbir Kapoor), and then you don’t give up, and he kills you’. But he removed the kiss. There was a kiss. I think it might come on the uncut Netflix version. After saying all this, he said, ‘You’re mute’.”
