    Better Tagline: “Hold me closer, toothy dancer.”

    Not So Brief Plot Synopsis: It sounded like a foolproof plan (or at least foolproof-adjacent): kidnap the 12-year old daughter of some rich dude, sit tight for 24 hours, and collect a cool $50 million. But it all begin to unravel when they discover dad is the mysterious (and vengeful) criminal Christof Lazar, they’re locked in the house with no way out, and young Abigail (Alisha Weir) is somewhat more of a handful than the average tween.

    “Critical” Analysis: Abigail was originally going to be part of something bigger. First envisioned as a remake of Dracula’s Daughter, it was to be looped into Universal’s “Dark Universe,” the studio’s attempt at an epic series reviving the classic Universal Monsters that Tom Cruise’s The Mummy effectively put a stake in (heh) back in 2017.

    Thank Set that never happened. It’s hard to imagine what a slog a shoehorned-into-franchise-continuity-like-so-many Ant-Man movies Abigail might have been, instead of the frenetic and hilariously sanguinary result delivered by the Scream and Scream VI creative team of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and writer Guy Busick.

    Scream may be what helped put the Radio Silence team on the map, but the movie of theirs that is the real spiritual predecessor to Abigail is 2019’s Ready or Not. Both feature a hide and seek plot (only in Abigail’s case, there’s only one “seeker”), pitch black comedy, and a pit full of corpses.

    In line to join those corpses are our kidnappers. Named after the Rat Pack so as not to reveal actual identities, they include Frank (Dan Stevens), the leader; Joey (Melissa Barrera), the One With Something To Fight For; Sammy (Kathryn Newton), the rich girl; dimwitted muscle-for-hire Peter (Kevin Durand); taciturn sniper Rickles (William Catlett); and goofy wheelman Dean (the late Angus Cloud).

    The crew has been put together by the enigmatic Lambert (Giancarlo Esposito, who’s in this for maybe 10 minutes) for reasons known only to him. He reminds them that anonymity is key to any decent caper, but in a sequence that would make Mr. Pink turn over in his grave, Joey susses out everyone’s real backgrounds.

    Barrera and Stevens take the lead with — happily — not one iota of romantic tension. Stevens is an effortless prick, and his Frank ranges between minimal competence and profanity-laced disbelief at their circumstances. While Barrera is somehow the moral core, in spite of her own sketchy background.

    Abigail works best when it tweaks the formulaic for maximum entertainment. Ready or Not isn’t the only “inspiration” here, as Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett mine everything from Dusk Till Dawn to The Usual Suspects. The twists aren’t really that twisty and the premise is reminiscent of any number of stories of criminals blindly getting in over their heads.

    However, my biggest beef is probably the kidnappers using the code name “Tiny Dancer” for Abigail, which effectively wiped out (almost) all my carefully thought our Elton John-related puns.

    In a perfect world, you’d know nothing about Abigail going in. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett obviously intended for (or hoped) the reveal of the title character’s carnivorous alter ego to be a shock, something impossible in this post-Movie Poop Shoot world of trailer reactions and plot reveals. It does dilute the product somewhat, but not so much to minimize the humor or gallons of ichor.

    Seriously, it’s like if Gallagher smashed blood bags on stage instead of watermelons. And was actually funny.

    Abigail is in theaters today.

    The raucous Sundance Film Festival premiere of “Freaky Tales” included one somber moment as the cast of the ode to all things Oakland paused to acknowledge their late co-star Angus Cloud.

    “Rest In Peace to Angus,” Jay Ellis, who plays basketball star Sleepy Floyd in the film, said. “He gave such a great performance.”

    Cloud, best known for his work as Fezco, a drug dealer with a heart of gold, in HBO’s “Euphoria,” died in 2023 of an accidental drug overdose. He was 25. “Freaky Tales” is one of Cloud’s final films; he plays a burglar in a smaller supporting role. Ellis noted that Cloud “was there to have so much fun” during shooting of the film’s climactic action sequence — a blood-drenched finale that can’t be spoiled here.

    “Freaky Tales” is set in the Bay Area in 1987 over the course of a single day. In the movie the lives of a depressed hitman, a group of punk rock fans, a pair of aspiring hip-hop artists and an NBA phenom collide in unexpected ways.

    There’s also a buzzy cameo from an Oscar-winning actor with Oakland ties.

    “Freak Tales” was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the team behind “Half Nelson,” “Mississippi Grind” and “Captain Marvel.” The film is one of several looking for distribution and the audience at Sundance was filled with executives from Netflix, Sony Pictures Classics and Neon.

    Fleck said that the movie was loosely inspired by his childhood in Oakland and some of the local legends he observed such as Floyd and rapper Too $hort. “This is sort of my 12 year old fantasy of a movie,” he told the packed house at Sundance’s Eccles Theater on Thursday night.

    “No one else was going to make this movie,” he added. “I just had to make it to see it…and of course I dragged Anna along with me for the journey.”

    In addition to Ellis and Cloud, the cast of “Freaky Tales” includes Pedro Pascal, Normani Kordei Hamilton, Dominique Thorne and Ben Mendelsohn. “Freaky Tales” is dedicated to Cloud’s memory, a tribute that came during the film’s end credits.

    Sundance’s opening day has featured several buzzy premieres, including the debuts of the documentaries “Girls State” and “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” as well as “Veni Vidi Vici,” a scabrous look at the ultra-wealthy.

    Universal Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “Abigail,” set to release on April 19.

    The film is helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — also known as Radio Silence — who directed recent popular horror movies including “Scream” (2022), “Scream VI” (2023) and “Ready or Not” (2019).

    “Abigail” follows a group of kidnappers who get in over their heads when their young target, a girl named Abigail, turns out to be a vampire.

    The film’s official logline reads, “Children can be such monsters. After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.”

    The suspenseful trailer shows the captors trying to figure out the best way to kill the young bloodsucker. “What are we talking? Like an Ann Rice or a ‘True Blood’? You know, ‘Twilight’?” asks Kathryn Newton’s character.

    Playing the kidnappers are Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, Newton, the late Angus Cloud, William Catlett and Giancarlo Esposito. Alisha Weir stars as Abigail. The film marks one of Cloud’s final on screen performances, following his death in July 2023 at the age of 25.

    “Abigail” is produced by William Sherak, Paul Neinstein and James Vanderbilt on behalf of Project X Entertainment. Tripp Vinson also produces in addition to Chad Vilella of Radio Silence. Ron Lynch and Macdara Kelleher serve as executive producers.

    Lisa Cloud, mother of late “Euphoria” star Angus Cloud, said it was “abundantly clear” that her son “did not intend to check out of this world” following his death early last week.

    The actor, known for his role as Fezco in the hit HBO series, died at his family’s Oakland, California, home on Monday. He was 25.

    Lisa Cloud, in a statement shared on Facebook, wrote that she appreciates the love sent to her family before noting that while her son was in “deep grief” over the recent death of his father, Conor Hickey, from mesothelioma. She described Angus Cloud’s last day as “a joyful one.”

    “He was reorganizing his room and placing items around the house with intent to stay a while in the home he loved. He spoke of his intent to help provide for his sisters at college, and also help his mom emotionally and financially. He did not intend to end his life,” Lisa Cloud wrote.

    “When we hugged goodnight we said how much we loved each other and he said he would see me in the morning,” she added. “I don’t know if or what he may have put in his body after that. I only know that he put his head on the desk where he was working on art project’s, fell asleep and didn’t wake up.”

    The actor “was determined to be already deceased” after Oakland Fire Department officials were dispatched to the home on Monday morning, a department spokesperson told CNN. A cause of death has yet to be announced.

    Tributes have poured in to honor the late actor over the past week, including posts from his “Euphoria” co-stars Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Dominic Fike as well as other entertainers such as Drake and Billie Eilish.

    The actor’s mother noted that she may find out that he “accidentally and tragically” overdosed before reiterating that he didn’t intend to “check out of this world.”

    “His struggles were real. He gave and received so much love and support to and from his tribe,” she wrote. “His work in euphoria became a lightning rod for his generation and opened up a conversation about compassion, loyalty, acceptance and love.”

    She later referred to Angus Cloud’s head injury, a result of a fall into a construction pit that led to a broken skull in 2013, Variety reported last year.

    “He was given 10 bonus years and filled them with creativity and love,” Lisa Cloud wrote. “To honor his memory, please make random acts of kindness part of your daily life. Bless your hearts.”

    Angus Cloud, the standout star from the HBO hit show “Euphoria,” has died at age 25, his representatives confirmed. 

    Cloud, best known for playing the drug dealer “Fezco” on “Euphoria” for two seasons, died Monday a week after burying his father, his representative Cait Bailey told CBS News. 

    The cause of his death was not confirmed.

    “It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today,” his family said in a statement. “As an artist, a friend, a brother, and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend.

    “Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence,” his family added. “We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter, and love for everyone. We ask for privacy at this time as we are still processing this devastating loss.”

    A spokesperson for HBO said in a statement to CBS News, “We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud. He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.”

    Cloud’s publicist, Cait Bailey, said Cloud died Monday at his family home in Oakland, California. No cause of death was given.

    Cloud hadn’t acted before he was cast in “Euphoria.” He was walking down the street in New York when casting scout Eleonore Hendricks noticed him. Cloud was resistant at first, suspecting a scam.

    Then casting director Jennifer Venditti met with him and series creator Sam Levinson eventually made him a co-star in the series alongside Zendaya for its first two seasons.

    To some, Cloud seemed so natural as Fez that they suspected he was identical to the character —  a notion that Cloud pushed back against.

    “It does bother me when people are like, `It must be so easy! You get to go in and be yourself.’ I’m like, ‘Why don’t you go and do that?’ It’s not that simple,” Cloud told Variety. “I brought a lot to the character. You can believe what you want. It ain’t got nothing to do with me.”

    The part made Cloud the breakout star of one the buzziest shows in television. He was recently cast to co-star in “Scream 6.”

    “We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud,” HBO said in a statement. “He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and `Euphoria’ family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time.”

    “As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence,” the family’s statement continued.

    “We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud. He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time,” accounts for HBO and “Euphoria” tweeted on Monday.

    Besides “Euphoria,” Cloud had two other roles in current projects, including “Freaky Tales” which is in post-production, and an untitled thriller that was in the process of filming.

    Cloud also appeared in Juice WRLD’s music video for the song “Cigarettes” in 2022 and Becky G and Karol G’s music video for the song “Mamiii.” The “Euphoria” actor also played roles in the 2021 film “North Hollywood” and “The Line,” which was released June 9.

    “Euphoria” was Cloud’s first acting job, he told Variety in a 2022 interview where he also discussed surviving a fall as a teenager in which he broke his skull. He told Variety that acting is “the best job” he’d ever had.

    “But there’s plenty of other stuff I could see myself doing,” he added. “Buy a boat. Find an island. Post up in a tent. See what happens next.”
