    Amtrak plans to keep you on the rails.

    As ridership climbs, Amtrak is meeting increasing demand with one of the biggest fleet overhauls in its history, the company said.

    At a preview event, Amtrak rolled out its first next-generation Airo train — built for more comfort, better reliability and modern connectivity.

    The first Airo sets will run on the Cascades route in the Pacific Northwest, with production wrapping in 2026.

    Northeast Regional trains are next, that means D.C., with testing starting this year and service expected in 2027.

    Paired with the new Acela trains, Amtrak says 83 Airo sets will anchor a nationwide push to expand capacity and modernize service coast to coast.

    The rail service is blaming what it calls “weather-related equipment issues” for the cancellation of three Keystone Service trains, seven Acela trains, 10 Northeast Regional trains.

    Amtrak told WTOP it’s communicating directly with impacted customers with reservations on affected trains, and that additional charges will be waived.

    The company said customers may change their reservations on the Amtrak App or Amtrak.com.

    For holiday travelers, there are a number of choices, but at D.C.’s Union Station, rail riders made the case for hopping all aboard an Amtrak train.

    For holiday travelers, there are a number of choices, but at D.C.’s Union Station, rail riders made the case for hopping all aboard an Amtrak train.

    For Tamyshia Curry and her dog Sevyn, traveling by train to New York for the Thanksgiving holiday was a no-brainer, especially when compared to flying.

    “It’s a lot cheaper, and it’s easier,” Curry said. “Especially with a pet.”

    Sevyn, a 2-year-old mini goldendoodle, is a calm travel companion, Curry said.

    “She actually doesn’t mind it, she usually just sleeps,” Curry said.

    Although, Sevyn does like to snag the window seat.

    “She loves the window seat. Yeah, it’s her favorite,” Curry said, explaining that having her dog outside a crate means buying an extra seat — but it’s worth it.

    Curry also said her decision to hold off on buying a Thanksgiving week Amtrak ticket paid off, with a low $78 fare. But as she was explaining that, Sevyn snagged WTOP’s microphone!

    Sevyn had been eyeing the mini microphone with its furry windscreen, which Curry easily retrieved before the pup could make a complete snack of it.

    Mark Thompson and his family opted for a pre-Thanksgiving holiday trip to D.C. from Delaware, a decision prompted mainly by his 4-year-old son, Mateo. Asked about that, Mateo told WTOP the decision to take a train trip boiled down to one simple fact.

    “I like it,” he said. “Cause it’s fast.”

    His father asked, “and what else?”

    “Because it’s fun and there’s a lot of people in the train,” Mateo said.

    Thompson is also a fan.

    “I like the train, because it’s kind of relaxing, better than driving,” Thompson said. “On the way down, I was saying to myself how smooth the ride was.”

    Ana Conner, a Princeton student, was on her way home to Prince George, Virginia. Like Thompson, the train is an easy choice when compared to driving.

    “I do not want to drive through D.C. and Baltimore traffic,” she said. “The train makes it a lot easier, a lot less stressful.”

    Conner has a piece of advice for anyone who wants a stress-free trip by train.

    “College students in general, they book trains very, very quickly and a lot of times they’re sold out. So make sure, especially if you’re a college student, that you book way in advance,” she said.

    “And get your student discount!”

  • Colorado weather: Will it snow during Thanksgiving travel?

    The hundreds of thousands of Coloradans expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year can expect dry weather and clear skies — at least on their way out, according to the National Weather Service.

    No snow is forecast for the Denver area leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday, and limited amounts are expected in higher elevations, including on mountain passes, according to weather service forecasters.

    Colorado’s highest peaks, including Mount Zirkel in the Park Range of the Rocky Mountains, will see between zero and 8 inches of snow by 5 a.m. Thursday. The most likely snowfall on that mountain is closer to 1 inch, forecasters said.

    As of Monday morning, according to the weather service, other snow totals expected by Thursday morning included:

    • Trace amounts on Loveland Pass and at Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park;
    • 0.5 inches on U.S. 40’s Berthoud Pass west of Denver, on Milner Pass in Rocky Mountain National Park and at Winter Park;
    • And 1 inch on U.S. 40’s Muddy Pass near Steamboat Springs, Colorado 14’s Cameron Pass near Walden and U.S. 40’s Rabbit Ears Pass near Kremmling.

    Most of that snow is expected to fall Monday night into Tuesday morning, and will likely be gone before most travelers hit the roads, rails or air, according to weather service forecasters.

    Higher elevations, including Cameron Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass, also have a 20% chance of snow showers before 11 a.m. Wednesday, forecasters said.

    Chances for snow will return across Colorado following Thanksgiving Day, and winter weather could intercept many travelers on their way home, according to the weather service.

    The amount of snow expected to fall was still up in the air Monday morning, but hourly forecasts from the weather service showed a 40% chance of Denver seeing its first snow of the season over the post-holiday weekend.

    At that time, the strongest chance for snow in the Denver area fell between 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday, but snow showers could start as early as 11 p.m. Friday and continue into Sunday night, forecasters said.

    Multiple inches of snow are expected to fall on Colorado’s mountain passes starting at about noon on Friday, according to the weather service.

  • Some desperate travelers turn to U-Haul as the government shutdown cuts flights and sends car rentals soaring | Fortune

    The U.S. government shutdown has rattled air travel — most recently with an unprecedented effort from the Federal Aviation Administration to cut flights by 10% at airports nationwide. And the disruptions are causing some to instead hit the road or buy a train ticket.

    That could mean more business for car rentals, long-haul buses and commuter rails like Amtrak — particularly if flight delays and cancellations continue piling up as the U.S. approaches Thanksgiving and other peak holiday travel.

    Amid the latest scramble, Hertz is already reporting a sharp increase in one-way car rentals. One-way reservations have spiked more that 20% through the coming weekend compared with the same period last year, according to the company, which has also pointed to the shutdown’s ongoing strain on travel overall.

    “We join the airlines in urging Congress to swiftly pass a clean continuing resolution and restore certainty for travelers,” Hertz CEO Gil West said in a statement. “Every day of delay creates unnecessary disruption.”

    A press contact for peer-to-peer car-sharing company Turo said Friday that the platform’s nationwide bookings were also up 30% year-over-year. And Avis simiarly noted it had also seen “an increase in one-way rental activity as airlines adjust flight schedules,” maintaining that it would continue “to serve customers in the best way possible as travel conditions evolve.”

    Amtrak, meanwhile, is predicting record Thanksgiving numbers.

    The rail service said it began to see those bookings grow before the shutdown began — but told The Associated Press on Thursday that it was also “reasonable to expect an increased share shift to Amtrak” if flight disruptions mount. Amtrak has maintained that its routes are running normally amid the shutdown.

    Flix North America, the parent company of FlixBus and Greyhound, is also preparing for more demand.

    “Our message is simple: you still have options,” said Kai Boysan, CEO of Flix North America.

    Boysan maintained that intercity buses are “one of the most dependable ways to get around” — and not impacted by the shutdown like flights are. “We anticipate more travelers may turn to ground transportation in the days ahead, and we’re monitoring demand closely and prepared to add capacity where needed to ensure people can keep moving,” he added.

    A Flix spokesperson said Friday that many of its bookings typically occur within 24 to 72 hours of departure, noting that the company should have a “clearer picture” of the overall impact in the coming days.

    Still, train and bus routes are sometimes more available in certain parts of the country than others. And some have also encountered sold-out tickets or rentals in recent days — instead turning to other creative options.

    Karen Soika from Greenwich, Connecticut, found out Friday morning that her flight out of Newark, New Jersey, was rebooked for an hour earlier. But she later learned her plane was actually leaving from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport instead, at least an hour away.

    She unsuccessfully tried to book a rental car to get to Utah for a weekend trip, before settling on another option: booking a U-Haul.

    “I’m going to U-Haul and I’m going to drive a truck cross country,” said Soika.

    Meanwhile, others are hoping to avoid lengthy alternatives.

    Christina Schlegel, of Arlington, Virginia, is keeping an eye on the Wednesday flight she’s booked to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When word of cancellations broke, her husband suggested they just drive if their flight is among those affected, but Schlegel says she’d rather pivot to a different flight or airport.

    “I don’t want to drive 12 hours,” said Schlegel, who is heading to Florida ahead of a Bahamas cruise.

    It can be overwhelming for travelers to navigate whether or not their trips will be impacted — particularly if the trip is farther down the road. And the costs of buying backup options can add up overall. That’s caused some to sit on their current bookings.

    “Everything is so fluid right now that many travelers are taking a ‘wait and see’ approach, especially looking ahead to Thanksgiving travel,” Aixa Diaz, spokesperson for motor group AAA, said in a Friday email.

    Diaz urges consumers to stay informed, make flexible backup plans and take steps to reduce future headaches — such as carving out more travel time overall or taking a taxi or public transport to an airport instead of parking your own car, in case your return trip gets canceled or rerouted.

    “Controlling what you can is key,” she noted.

  • Amtrak’s new high-speed Acela train a gamechanger for Northeast travelers

    Amtrak’s NextGen Acela high-speed trains are now racing passengers between Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., hitting top speeds of 160 miles per hour.  

    Leo Friedman and his mother, Phyllis, traveled from New Jersey to D.C. this week just to take the inaugural train north.

    “Ever since that first video came out, that Amtrak posted about nine years ago, I’ve been super interested and invested in this NextGen Acela,” Friedman told CBS News. 

    Acela was a game-changer when it first launched 25 years ago, doubling Amtrak’s market share in the Northeast. 

    The 28 new trains will hold about 80 more passengers. They offer upgraded seats, bigger windows, faster Wi-Fi and lots of charging power. All 28 trains, assembled in upstate New York, are expected to be in service by 2027. 

    There’s also a self-serve food bar in the café car.

    “This train truly is the future of the high-speed rail in America,” Elliot Hamlisch, Amtrak chief commercial officer, told CBS News. “…This is the most technologically-advanced train, not only in America, but in the world. So we’ve taken the best of what Europe has to offer and incorporated it here on our tracks.”

    The new trains have a top speed 10 miles per hour faster than the older Acelas, but still slower than high-speed trains in Europe and Asia. This is in part because of tracks laid over a century ago that wind through communities. 

    But the new trains are designed to lean into curves, allowing them to go faster.

    “This is the next best step to moving us faster in the Eastern Corridor,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told CBS News. 

    The new Acela trains also meet new, stronger crashworthiness standards, guarding against the kind of jackknife-type derailment that killed eight people and injured more than 200 in Northeast Philadelphia in 2015.

    They also come online as the Department of Transportation is pledging $43 million to jumpstart upgrades at New York’s Penn Station. Duffy also announced this week DOT is taking direct oversight of Washington’s Union Station.

    Amtrak has launched, what the company claims, is the “future of high-speed rail” as, on Wednesday, the mass transit provider added new ‘NextGen Acela’ trains to its fleet running along the Northeast Corridor, which runs from Washington D.C. to Boston.

    “Acela is synonymous with American high-speed trains, and today marks a new era of next-generation service,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris during a presentation on Wednesday. “On behalf of everyone at Amtrak, I’m proud to welcome you aboard NextGen Acela. The future of high-speed rail starts now.”

    The first of these new trains — that can carry 27% more people than prior Acela trains and can hit speeds of 160 mph — will stop in Philadelphia on Thursday morning.

    Amtrak officials noted that the 28 ‘NextGen Acela’ trains that are entering service through 2027 mark the first new “premium high-speed trainsets” are operating along the Northeast Corridor since the Acela’s debut in 2000.

    On Wednesday, while touting the new trains, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced that the federal Department of Transportation will be reclaiming management of Washington Union Station.

    “With these new Acela trainsets, Amtrak will provide more reliable service and lower prices for the American people – all while increasing the organization’s profitability,” said Duffy when the new trains were unveiled in Washington D.C. “But we’re not stopping there. Instead of being a point of pride, Washington’s Union Station has fallen into disrepair. By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost.”

    Among other new features, the new ‘NextGen Acela’ trains will offer free, high-speed wi-fi along with an “enhanced onboard dining experience,” Amtrak officials noted in a statement on the new trains.

    The launch of the new trains come at an interesting time as Amtrak officials recently said that SEPTA’s financial woes could “lead to a deterioration” of Amtrak services all along the Northeast Corridor.

    “The potential reduction in SEPTA’s financial contribution will have a negative impact on Amtrak’s ability to reinvest in the rail network,” Amtrak officials said in a statement last week. “This could lead to a deterioration in infrastructure condition and authorized train operating speeds, negatively impacting Amtrak-operated, PennDOT-sponsored Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian service between Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh, as well as Northeast Corridor services.”

    To find a “NextGen Acela” for your commute, look for “NextGen Acela” trains marked with a special tag on Amtrak.com and in the Amtrak app.

    Amtrak officials said that the following train numbers will operate “NextGen Acela” trains:

    • Weekdays: Trains 2153, 2154, 2170, and 2173
    • Saturdays: Trains 2250 and 2251
    • Sundays: Trains 2248, 2258, 2259, and 2271

    Also, Amtrak officials said, in a statement, that the “NextGen Acela” train fleet was assembled at a facility in Hornell, New York by union workers using “components from over 180 suppliers across 29 states—creating approximately 15,000 U.S. jobs.”

  • First look inside Amtrak’s new Acela, featuring modern seating, faster Wi-Fi

    Amtrak’s new Acela trains are entering passenger service on Thursday, and I had a chance to join a preview for journalists on Wednesday, ahead of their first regular run. On the trip from New York to New Haven, Connecticut, I noticed that the new trains feel more like what travelers might see abroad than what passengers are accustomed to on American railroads.

    These NextGen Acelas feature updated seating, a higher top speed, and some thoughtful amenities, such as reading lights and power at every seat (not just every row), which represent an improvement over the previous generation. The current generation is about to hit 25 years in service on the railroad.

    “What’s exciting about these is they’re a bit faster, 160 miles an hour top end,” Amtrak President Roger Harris told me right after we exited the tunnel from Penn Station in New York. “But if you look around, you’ll see a really contemporary, clean, comfortable, spacious interior.”

    The trains are designed to travel faster than 160 miles per hour, but track restrictions along the route limit their top speed.

    Here’s what passengers can expect as the new trainsets begin to operate along the Northeast Corridor.

    Passengers will probably first notice the modern seating and amenities on the new Acela trainsets. Although the seats themselves feel a little hard, they are sure to break in as Amtrak projects record ridership on its new trains. The new Acelas seat 80 passengers more per set than the previous generation of Acelas.

    Beyond that, Harris said, there’s improved Wi-Fi connectivity and other amenities that help bring the railroad’s flagship service into the modern era.

    “We have 5G, Wi-Fi. We have new ergonomically shaped seats. We have a great cafe car. We have an improved cafe menu,” Harris said. “We have an in-seat tower where you don’t have to reach across your neighbor’s lap.”

    Earlier generations of Amtrak trains had outlets only along the walls, requiring aisle seat passengers to ask their neighbors for permission before plugging in.

    Harris said the new trains were also designed with accessibility in mind.

    The restrooms, he said, “have a full 60-inch turning radius for people in mobility devices. So the whole train is far more accessible.”

    Other thoughtful features to assist passengers with mobility issues include built-in platform gap bridges at every door and automatic doors at the end of every car, allowing passengers to access the vestibules more easily.

    Changes to the schedule

    Amtrak will initially have five trains in service, which Harris said will allow for two daily runs in each direction between Boston and Washington.

    The railroad will then add one to two new Acelas per month until 2027, when it will have the full fleet of 28 in service.

    Harris said Amtrak expects to retire all the first-generation Acelas by Spring 2026, but will continue adding more new Acelas after that.

    “About every six weeks, we’ll be augmenting the schedule with new trains that come into service,” he said.

    Ultimately, once the full order of new Acelas is completed, there will be more daily Acela departures than there are now, which Harris said, along with the higher capacity, could add to lower prices on off-peak trips.

    “That means more ability to buy tickets,” he said. “By virtue of the fact that there are more seats, we’re going to have more discounted seats on the off-peak departure.”

    Harris added that with a higher top speed, Amtrak should be able to tweak the schedule to provide a faster Acela service in the future.

    “Over the next year, we will be modifying the schedule as we get more trains,” he said. Not only will Amtrak be able to tweak the schedule as more fast trains come into service, but he said real-world performance of the trainsets will inform how they can be scheduled, and the railroad won’t be able to do that until it has data from the trains’ actual service performance.

    “I expect that for the next year we’ll be tweaking the schedule,” Harris added.

  • Amtrak resumes service along Dodge County track where train derailed

    Amtrak service on a rural Wisconsin train track that has seen two derailments in recent years resumed on Sunday, Aug. 16, less than 48 hours after a CPKC train, carrying crude oil, derailed in Dodge County.

    CPKC spokesperson Patrick Waldron said in an Aug. 16 statement that workers repaired and reopened one rail, but in a follow-up statement Aug. 18, said both tracks were reopened Aug. 18 after track repair work and safety inspections.

    A CPKC train lies detailed between Maiden Lane Road and the village of Reeseville in the town of Lowell on Aug. 15. About 22 of the train’s 95 cars derailed, according to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.

    Amtrak said in a statement that service has been restored. Amtrak carries passengers between Chicago and Minneapolis along this railway.

    The Aug. 15 derailment near Reeseville in Lowell leaked crude oil into the ground at about a 1 gallon per minute rate, officials said. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Aug. 16 that all leaking rail cars had been contained.

    Waldron said environmental and hazardous materials teams remain on site working on the cleanup and removal of the derailed cars. The involved cars have all been secured and staged for offloading. The crude oil leak is contained and has been recovered, according to Waldron. Cleanup will continue in the coming days.

    CPKC teams have not found any hazards in air quality monitoring, the company said. CPKC will continue air monitoring and has “environmental and hazardous material teams” on site to continue investigating the derailment.

    The derailment’s cause is under investigation but it happened in the same area as another Canadian Pacific train that derailed near Reeseville two years ago.

    “We need to make sure that this doesn’t happen again,” Sheriff Dale Schmidt said. “And they need to take some steps to either reduce the speed limit or change some of the low-grade designs.”

    Forty-eight train derailments occurred in Wisconsin between 2022 and May 31, 2025, according to Federal Railroad Administration data. Two derailments occurred between January and May 31, according to the data.

    Amtrak offers new daily route from Orlando to Chicago starting in November

    All aboard! Amtrak is set to launch a new route that will offer daily trips between Orlando and Chicago.

    The new “Floridian” route, on trains 40 and 41, is scheduled to make its inaugural trip on Nov. 10. The Floridian will run daily and will transport passengers from Orlando through 10 states, traveling up the Atlantic seaboard before diverting to the midwestern region of Chicago in under two days.

    “Our members have had a long-standing dream of restoring a one-seat ride from the Midwest to Florida,” Jim Mathews, president of the Rail Passengers Association, said in a news release. “We’re thrilled that a new generation of American passengers will be able to experience this service for themselves.”

    There will be 45 stations served by this route, as it combines two existing interstate segments: the Silver Star, between Miami and New York, and the Capitol Limited, between Chicago and Washington. The route is designed to help passengers avoid the crowded metropolitan areas of New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, according to Amtrak.

    Passengers can board the Floridian at Amtrak’s stations across Central Florida, including Kissimmee, Orlando, Winter Park and DeLand. Northbound trains make stops in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area and Tampa before arriving in Kissimmee.

    Round-trip, coach-class tickets cost $113, while private room fares begin at $734.

    MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A 6-0 vote Tuesday by the City Council in Mobile, Alabama, has set the stage for Amtrak passenger trains to roll from New Orleans to Mobile next year.

    The Sun Herald reports that the Mobile council voted to fund the passenger train service for three years. The funding had already been approved in Mississippi and Louisiana. Amtrak’s projected start date for the service is spring of 2025. It is uncertain whether it can begin before the Super Bowl is played in New Orleans on Feb. 9.

    “I think everybody wants to get this running by the Super Bowl,” said Knox Ross, chairman of the Southern Rail Commission, the interstate organization promoting rail transportation. “But they can’t guarantee it.”

    Platforms are ready in New Orleans and in the Mississippi cities of Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula. But a platform still has to be built in Mobile.

    Ross said a schedule and fares will be posted on the Amtrak.com website about 90 days before service begins. The current plan calls for two trains a day running from New Orleans to Mobile and two a day heading from Mobile to New Orleans — with brief stops at the cities in between for passengers to get on and off.

    As Amtrak gains control of D.C.’s Union Station, the railroad company said that it’s launching a new program that aims to “revitalize and improve the operations” of the iconic terminal. 

    Amtrak will gain control of D.C.’s Union Station starting on Monday, and the railroad company said that it’s launching a new program that aims to “revitalize and improve the operations” of the iconic terminal.

    This comes after a yearslong lawsuit wherein Amtrak argued in court that eminent domain privileges dictate it should be granted full control of the station.

    The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia gave Amtrak the right to control all of the management and operations of the station. Starting Monday, Amtrak is responsible for everything inside the station itself and the “drive aisles” between the station and Columbus Circle in front of it.

    It will not, however, have control over Columbus Circle, which continues to be federal land maintained by the National Park Service.

    “Amtrak has the experience and vision to create a safer and more welcoming environment for travelers and other visitors and ensure the vitality and longevity of this iconic building,” Amtrak President Roger Harris said in a statement.

    Visible changes to the station won’t be apparent for a while, but the transit agency has long brainstormed ideas to make the ticketing and boarding processes smoother for riders.

    Proposed improvements include more seating, improved traffic flow for vehicles outside of the station and for riders during the boarding process inside the station’s main concourse to reduce congestion. Further improvements include an informational booth inside the station’s main hall and expanded digital signage around the station.

    Riders will, however, likely see some traffic around the station as Amtrak begins the redevelopment process that will repair 19 train tracks inside the station’s tunnel.

    Union Station has also been the target of a years-in-the-making redevelopment project, focusing on the revitalization of the station’s retail spaces. The once bustling location for transportation, shopping and dining all in one place took a major hit during the pandemic, when ridership dropped to record-low numbers.

    The Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, chaired by CEO Doug Carr, intends to increase ridership with Amtrak by a projected 95% over the next decade.

    Amtrak said in a statement that it would launch its revitalization efforts in coordination with the USRC “to improve the overall experience at the station.”
