  • Lionel Richie reveals he almost became a priest before one fan’s comment changed his life

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Lionel Richie revealed that he almost joined the Episcopal priesthood before one encouraging shoutout from an audience member convinced him to pursue a musical career.

In his new memoir “Truly,” the 76-year-old music icon recalled growing up, he was a “disastrously shy altar boy” who considered becoming a member of the clergy and was training for the priesthood.

During a Friday appearance on “Today with Jenna & Friends” to promote his tell-all, Richie recalled the pivotal moment, while performing with his college band, The Commodores, that inspired him to commit to music.

“I couldn’t figure out what the heck to do with my life, couldn’t figure it out,” the four-time Grammy Award winner said. “I’m as shy as I can be. And then I realized, maybe the priesthood might be the best way to go.”

“Here’s what happened to change my mind,” Richie continued. “I joined the Commodores in my second semester of my sophomore year and something amazing happened. A lady on the front row of some club said, ‘Sing it, baby!’”

Richie said that the audience member’s comment prompted him to contact church leadership and abandon his training for the priesthood.

“I called back to the priest and I said, ‘I don’t think I’m going to be college material. I just gotta be honest with you,’” the “All Night Long” hitmaker said. “There’s a moment when you have that moment.”

“All of a sudden, I got an acknowledgment from the other side,” Richie continued. “From that point on, I kept thinking, now how does this go forward? I didn’t know I was a writer, didn’t know I was a singer. Thank God for The Commodores because I would have never discovered Lionel Richie.”

Richie admitted that he continued to struggle with his shyness while he was performing with The Commodores.

“Scared to death, can you imagine having panic attacks on stage?” the “American Idol” judge said. “But I wanted to be in this band so badly, and I wanted to be in this business.”

In “Truly,” Richie recalled telling the priests at his church that he had second thoughts about his vocation for the priesthood.

“They gave me wise words of encouragement and told me that if things changed the door was always open,” Richie wrote. “In fact, in the coming years, whenever I worried that the music thing was to be short-lived, I’d talk about returning to my earlier plans.”

He continued, “I even picked out a seminary in Wyoming. Never went. The moment of truth probably arrived when I began to write songs—and realized they were my real sermons.

Grammy-nominated ‘American Idol’ alum Jordin Sparks joins WTOP en route to DC’s Atlantis – WTOP News

“There’s something for everybody on this album.” Jordin Sparks speaks to WTOP before her “No Restrictions: Live & Intimate” concert on Thursday.

‘American Idol’ alum Jordin Sparks on her win

She’s sold over 10 million digital tracks in the U.S. since winning “American Idol” back in 2007.

On Thursday, Jordin Sparks brings her “No Restrictions: Live & Intimate” Tour to The Atlantis in D.C. The tour is named after her new “No Restrictions” album that drops next month.

“There’s something for everybody on this album,” Sparks told WTOP.

“We’ve got my southern gospel roots, my choir roots. We’ve got country, acoustic, piano ballads, a power ballad, we have pop, we have R&B. So ‘No Restrictions’ makes sense because I was like, ‘I’m gonna give everybody everything because I love all types of music’ and people met me that way on ‘Idol.’”

Born in Phoenix in 1989, Sparks grew up watching the previous seasons of “American Idol.”

“I definitely watched ‘Idol,’” Sparks said.

“I watched every single season. I watched Kelly (Clarkson), Ruben (Studdard), Fantasia (Barrino), Carrie (Underwood), Taylor (Hicks) and then I got to audition. I was a really big fan so when I got to audition I was really excited to be there, but at the same time I believed in what I could do, so I was like, ‘If all the things line up, there are so many variables, I think I can actually do this,’ then it happened!”

Indeed, Sparks won Season 6 to become the youngest “American Idol” champ ever at age 17. She said she’ll never forget Ryan Seacrest announcing her name with confetti falling after 74 million votes were cast in the finale.

“It was literally the moment that changed my life,” Sparks said.

“When Ryan called my name, I put my hands over my face like, ‘Oh my gosh, this really just happened!’ Everyone was clapping, confetti pyrotechnics were going off, but I couldn’t hear anything. It was like a movie, all I could hear was my heartbeat. I was looking at my family then Ryan hands me the microphone, ‘Here to sing her single.’ … I sang the song, but I don’t remember singing it.”

Her coronation song “This Is My Now” immediately ranked No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“It was a great song,” Sparks said.

“It was just so beautiful. That was the first time on ‘Idol’ that we put stuff up for iTunes, so we had to prerecord the songs before we actually had to perform them and that made it a little more challenging because you could only perform two minutes on the show but the songs were three, four, five minutes, so that would make us more nervous. … I definitely love that song. It really holds a special place in my heart.”

Her self-titled album “Jordin Sparks” (2007) earned a Grammy nomination for her Chris Brown collaboration “No Air,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “One Step at a Time” hit No. 17 and “Tattoo” hit No 8.

“It’s funny because, now all these years later, I listen to that song (‘Tattoo’) and I don’t think I even really understand the weight of what I was saying at the time,” Sparks said.

“I interpreted it as best I could being 17 years old. … I remember hearing it and I was like, ‘This song is so much fun, I love singing it.’ It was so catchy, I was like, ‘This is a fun song, I really, really like this,’ then we decided that it would be my first official single and it blew up.”

Her second album “Battlefield” (2009) proved that there was no sophomore slump thanks to a smash title track that reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the catchy “S.O.S. (Let the Music Play).”

“Look, I thought there was pressure on the first album, but when we started the second one I was like, ‘How do I follow that up?’ I had my own shoes to fill,” Sparks said.

“I missed the days when pop-rock power ballads were the thing, so I was like, ‘I can definitely do that.’ … As soon as I heard (‘Battlefield’), I was like, ‘This is where I am in my lifetime, I relate to this.’ … I wanted to lean more into my rock influences and let my voice just soar and fly.”

After her third album “Right Here Right Now” (2015), Sparks expanded into acting, playing Whitney Houston’s daughter in the film “Sparkle” (2012), plus the Hallmark movie “A Christmas Treasure” (2021).

On Broadway, she starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” (2010) and Sara Bareilles’ “Waitress” (2019).

“I’ve always loved live performance,” Sparks said.

“Broadway was where I really saw live stage performance and everything came together: acting, singing, dancing in a live performance every night. I loved that. Being able to showcase those things and get to experience them in real life, it’s just been incredible. Broadway is a huge commitment, it’s a lot … After doing ‘Idol’ and Broadway, everything else is a cake walk. I can handle anything.’

Along the way, she cowrote the Ariana Grande hit “The Way” (2014), released the Christmas album “Cider & Hennessy” (2020) and earned a Grammy nomination for collaborating with the Christian duo For King & Country on the song “Love Me Like I Am” (2023).

Next, her fifth studio album “No Restrictions” will be released on Sept. 13.

“At this point in my life as a mom, wife, friend, artist, songwriter, human, I feel like I’m letting go of things that, not held me back, but just didn’t serve me anymore,” Sparks said.

“We grow, elevate and evolve, so there are different pieces of me that I’m like, ‘I appreciate you, but I can’t bring you with me in this next chapter,’ as well as I don’t want to be restricted in a box for my music or by other people’s opinions. I feel like I’m in a really good place.”

Carrie Underwood returning to ‘American Idol’ as newest judge – National | Globalnews.ca

Carrie Underwood will be the next singer to sit behind the judges’ table on American Idol, filling Katy Perry’s spot after her departure from the show in May.

Underwood, who rose to fame after she won the singing competition show in 2005, will return 20 years later as a judge for the upcoming season, set to premiere in spring 2025. She’s the first American Idol alum to become a judge.

In an emotional video announcing Underwood’s new hosting gig, she said “I’m proud of everything that I was able to accomplish on the show, and I’m so proud of everything that I’ve accomplished since.”

The country singer, who is the most decorated artist in CMT Music Awards’ history with 25 wins, made waves with her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s I Can’t Make You Love Me at her audition, and she quickly became a fan-favorite.

Underwood has also won eight Grammy Awards and consistently tops the charts with her albums and singles. She will be joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, who each have seven seasons of judging experience under their belts, for the franchise’s 23rd season.

“This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on Idol and launched her successful multi-Grammy Award-winning career. As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows on television,” said Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, in a release from ABC. “This is a full-circle moment both for the show and audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home, Carrie.”

Longtime host Ryan Seacrest, who has been with the show since it premiered, will also return. Seacrest is also taking over Pat Sajak’s role as the host of Wheel of Fortune this fall.

Auditions for the new season will kick off Aug. 12 with the “Idol Across America” nationwide search for talent and will end in September. The season is set to premiere in the spring and will be available to watch on ABC and Hulu.

    Story continues below advertisement

American Idol premiered in 2002 on Fox and was a hit for the network, but it was cancelled in 2016. After two years off the air, the show was revived by ABC and has aired there for seven seasons. Perry was the first of the revival judges to leave the judges’ post.

A representative for Underwood did not immediately return requests for comment.

6 Reality Competition Singers You Should Keep Up With

Who else’s guilty pleasure is watching reality vocal competition shows on their weeknights? We know it’s not just us, and you know what? We take it back. It doesn’t have to be a guilty pleasure at all. Singing competitions like American Idol and The Voice have produced some incredible artists. And if you’ve ever wondered what artists like Gina Miles and Emmy Russell get up to after their shows, we have six names to discuss with you right here, right now. So don’t go anywhere!

    Gina Miles – ‘Wicked Game’

The Voice’s Season 23 winner, Gina Miles, stunned weekly with her powerful voice. And she’s just getting started. If you’re not new to the Gina Miles phenomenon, you’d remember when she sang ‘Wicked Game’ on The Voice on Team Niall. And you might even remember this performance as the moment we all realized just how much potential Gina has. The dark presentation and the strength of Gina’s vocals made for a hauntingly beautiful performance. One that made us want to come back and listen repeatedly. And now we can! Not only can we listen, but we can also watch her equally striking video. Everyone else, watch out; it’s Gina’s time to shine.

Jack Blocker – ‘All Of Yours (To Give All Of Mine)’

American Idol Season 22 Finalist Jack Blocker is celebrating his third-place finish with a new single. This folk/country tune is a love letter to his wife, and we can feel the love in this one. The simplicity of the music video really drives the message of the song. This is all for his wife, and nothing will take attention away from that. That’s so sweet. We can’t help but root for everything Jack does from here. And the first thing you can do to make sure he gets the love he deserves is listen to ‘All Of Yours (To Give All Of Mine)!’

    Triston Harper – ‘H.O.P.E.’

Triston Harper is another finalist from the latest season of American Idol, and these finalists are not playing around. With ‘H.O.P.E.,’ it’s impossible for us to believe that Triston is 15 years old. The maturity in his voice is not lost on this bluesy track. The lyrics are inspiring to anyone trying to make it anywhere. Triston is proof that you should not give up on your dreams. Anyone can make it! And like the other finalists on this list, we really believe big things are coming for Triston.

Dez Duron – ‘Let’s Just Call It Love’

The Voice alum Dez Duron is a must-list for fans of jazz. This being Dez’s first original song, we finally see his unique style. We, of course, got a taste of it in his performances on The Voice, and we would expect nothing less than the soulful ring of ‘Let’s Just Call It Love.’ Things are really working out for Dez Duran this year, as he’s also set to make his Broadway debut. Given this versatility, we can’t wait to see everything Dez is working on!

Now we have the second-place finisher on the latest season of American Idol. If you’ve noticed, this season’s finalists are not letting us rest. And that’s exactly the way we want it. Because if you love country music, you’d recognize how deserving of his placement Will Moseley was. Even if you don’t love country music, ‘Good Book Bad’ is such a strong song, and you must see his potential. His raspy drawl just scratches an itch in our brains, making him impossible to stop listening to.

Katy Perry sparks debate as she wears raunchy black dress during American Idol episode

Katy Perry certainly knows how to make an entrance and a statement. During Sunday’s thrilling episode of American Idol, the pop superstar not only turned heads but sparked quite the conversation with her daring outfit choice as the competition heated up with America closing in on deciding this season’s Top 5.

From the start, Katy, 39, was in her usual spirited form, sharing a cheeky confession with host Ryan Seacrest, 49, and fellow judges Lionel Richie, 74, and Luke Bryan, 47. “What you don’t know is that my butt is out right now,” she quipped, causing Ryan to respond swiftly, “Well, fix yourself,” before turning his attention back to the live audience.

The Firework hitmaker stunned in a plunging black leather dress that was as bold as it was beautiful, perfectly showcasing Katy’s flair for memorable fashion moments.

Her look was impeccably complemented by flawlessly applied makeup and sleekly styled jet-black hair that cascaded elegantly down her shoulders.

The fashion stakes were raised even higher when contestant McKenna Faith Breinholt took the stage to perform Katy’s hit ET, wearing a dress strikingly similar to Katy’s, albeit with a different cut.

Post-performance, Ryan seized the moment to humorously inquire if the dresses were as comfortable as they were stylish, to which Katy humorously replied, “No,” adding, “It’s like the Met Gala a night early!”

Katy Perry suffers a wardrobe malfunction on American Idol

Viewers quickly took to social media to comment on Katy’s ensemble, with opinions ranging wildly.

Some fans felt the look was perhaps too bold for the pop star at this stage in her career. “Katy Perry is a little bit too old to be dressing like this. At some point, you grow out of that,” one viewer expressed.

Others voiced concern over potential wardrobe malfunctions: “Katy is one sneeze away from a wardrobe malfunction!” and “Katy, please get dressed,” were just a couple of the comments that flooded online platforms.

Jokes aside, some fans couldn’t help but quip about the outfit’s unique style, with one viewer tweeting, “Katy is wearing Glad bags on live TV.”

The episode also marked a poignant moment for Katy, as she had previously revealed in a candid interview with Jimmy Kimmel that this season would be her last on American Idol.

Explaining her decision, she shared, “This fall, in September, I’m going to be doing this huge music festival in Brazil called Rock in Rio. So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol.” Her departure will surely be a significant change for the show, as Ryan noted, “(Katy) just brought an amazing generosity and love and big heart, that kind of spirit to the show.”

    Who hosts American Idol?

Ryan Seacrest has been the show’s only host since the series premiered in 2002. Technically, Seacrest co-hosted the first season alongside Brian Dunkleman, but the very next season, Dunkleman left the show. Since then, Seacrest has been the sole host of American Idol, except for the seasons between 2016 and 2019 due to illness.

  • ‘American Idol’ fans vote in their favorites for Top 10

‘American Idol’ fans vote in their favorites for Top 10

HOLLYWOOD — After thousands of hopefuls, and hundreds of young singers making their way to Hollywood… “American Idol” has named its Top 10.

“It will be difficult from here on out,” said host Ryan Seacrest.

“American Idol” had to say goodbye to Jayna Elise and Roman Collins to say hello to this season’s Top 10. And now that they’re here, the judges say they’ve got more work to do to stay here!

“Now it has to be individuality. In other words, it has to be where you actually stand out as the artist,” said Lionel Richie.

“It’s all about the strategy now and anyone that’s standing still, even if they’re playing an instrument, it’s not going to work anymore,” advised Katy Perry.

Luke Bryan agrees. “They’ve got to re-invent themselves and just get creative on how they stand out and catch America’s eyeballs.”

Those who made the top 10 reflected on their journey.

“I don’t think I’m the best person in this competition at all. Definitely should not win but, like, if they want to put me in another round, like, that’d be cool,” said Kayko.

“The sky is the limit, you know? Just standing here being surrounded by so many talented people is already reaching heights that I never imagined I could reach,” said Mia Matthews.

15-year-old Triston Harper isn’t sure why fans have taken a shine to his talent. “I don’t know. I reckon it’s just because I’m just this little Oklahoma boy who’s got this cute little accent or that Alabama smile.”

“American Idol” is back on Sunday, April 28, on ABC with Shania Twain as the guest mentor.

Mandisa, a Grammy-winning singer who got her start on “American Idol,” died on Thursday at 47 years old, her representative confirmed to CBS News.

“At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details,” her rep told CBS News, adding the singer was found dead in her home.

“We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the rep said.

Statements posted on her social media pages said, “Mandisa was a voice of encouragement and truth to people facing life’s challenges all around the world,” and her own words say it best.

    “I’m already home

You’ve got to lay it down

    ’cause Jesus holds me now—

    And I am not alone”

Mandisa was born Mandisa Lynn Hundley in 1976 in Sacramento, California. She sang in her church and studied vocal performance at American River College and later Fisk University in Nashville. She placed 9th on Season Five of the popular singing competition show “American Idol,” and after her elimination, pursued a career in Christian Music and wrote extensively about her faith in her memoir and music. She went on to become one of the handful of American Idol alumni to win Grammys. Other notable winners include Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson.

She won Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014 for her album “Overcomer. Mandisa garnered 5 nominations, including Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album in 2007 and 2009.

Mandisa, Grammy-Winning Singer And ‘American Idol’ Alum, Dies At 47 – KXL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Mandisa, a contemporary Christian singer who appeared on “American Idol” and won a Grammy for her 2013 album ‘Overcomer’, has died. She was 47.

A representative for the singer told The Associated Press that the singer was found dead in her home in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday. The representative said the cause of Mandisa’s death was not yet known.

Mandisa, whose full name was Mandisa Lynn Hundley, was born near Sacramento, California, and grew up singing in church. She gained stardom after finishing ninth on “American Idol” in 2006.

As she left, host Ryan Seacrest told the singer that she was “a great spirit on the show.”

Mandisa moved on, releasing her debut album in 2007 called “True Beauty,” which received a Grammy nomination that year for best pop and contemporary gospel album.

She went on to release five more albums, including a Christmas album.

In 2014, she won a Grammy for best contemporary Christian music album for “Overcomer,” her fifth album.

Mandisa spoke openly about her struggles with depression, releasing a memoir entitled “Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy” in 2022 that detailed her experiences with severe depression, weight-related challenges, the coronavirus pandemic and her faith.

On Friday, the Christian radio network K-Love paid tribute to the singer on social media, saying: “Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles.”

With seven NAACP theater awards, Kinnik Sky shines as a beacon of artistic brilliance. As a multifaceted producer, actor, and playwright, she prepares to entertain Atlantans with her latest theatrical work, “Peace Be Still.”

Sky’s journey as a former hopeful contestant on “American Idol” weaves an exciting narrative, but her love for the arts began long before her national television debut. For example, her youth was filled with impromptu performances in front of a one-person audience.

“Since I was a small child, I would go in my room and get my church shoes and tell my daddy to watch me tap, but I never took a tap dance class in my life,” Sky said.

What makes an ‘American Idol?’ Judges talk connections, memorable moments and having the ‘it’ factor

LOS ANGELES — What does it take to be an “American Idol?” The judges are weighing in.

“They just got to have the star ‘It’ factor, the magic,” said country superstar and judge Luke Bryan.

For Lionel Richie, all he thinks about is “instant identity.”

“In other words, five seconds into your voice, can I remember your voice?” he said.

“It’s intense. It’s exhausting for them,” said Katy Perry.

The three star judges along with host Ryan Seacrest are reflecting on Season 22’s contestants who have made it through to Hollywood Week.

“They just can do it, and you’re sucked into what they’re doing,” said Seacrest. “You don’t feel like they’re thinking so much about it when they’re performing. That’s power.”

Bryan said the first thing they see when they meet a contestant is innocence, youthfulness and hope.

“… and drive and determination,” he said. “And to get to where we have, you got to have all of that.”

Richie said every contestant that performs is 100% ready for what’s to come.

“That reminds me so much of us,” he said. “Me especially, because when I was 19 … The Commodores … we’re ready. Let us go. It was seven years later, we made it, you know, in terms of the hit, but they all think right now, today, ‘I just left my bedroom. I’m ready to kill it.’”

Perry doesn’t care what contestants choose to sing – it’s all about their spirit.

“They can sing one of our songs and make it sound like they wrote it, so if they embrace it, I’m in,” she said. “Really delivering it with their heart. It doesn’t matter if they get a little pitchy or if they don’t do it perfectly. If they connect emotionally, I think they win.”

  • Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter Emmy Russell auditions for ‘American Idol’: Watch her performance

Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter Emmy Russell auditions for ‘American Idol’: Watch her performance

Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter wants to follow in her late grandmother’s footsteps. To achieve that dream, she’s competing on this season of “American Idol.”

Emmy Russell, daughter of Patsy Lynn and Philip Russell, auditioned in front of judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan during the show’s Feb. 25 episode.

“She’s one of the biggest country music singers of all time, but to me she’s just my grandma,” Russell said in a clip filmed at Lynn’s estate in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.

The 24-year-old, who was called “quiet” by Bryan when entering the audition room, later explained that she believes she’s “a little timid” because “I want to own my voice.”

Perry chimed in, saying that if Russell has her own style of singing like her grandmother did, then she has her “own lane” as a performer.

Russell then sat at the piano to perform an original song called “Skinny,” which she said is about an eating disorder.

“She just wanted to do this honestly — ‘This is who I am and this is what I do and this is my heart,’” Russell’s mom Patsy Lynn, one-half of the country music duo The Lynns with her twin sister Peggy Lynn, said outside the audition room. “I think that when you come from a musical family, the shadow is so big. How do I fill those shoes? Well the deal is, you don’t. You make your own shadow.”

From left to right: Emmy Russell and her mother Patsy Lynn, who are Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter and daughter, are seen during an audition for “American Idol.”

After performing, Perry called Russell an “A+ songwriter” just like her grandmother and said “you’ve got the gift.”

“I don’t think you need to compare yourself to what grandma was — you’re totally different,” she added. “You shouldn’t give yourself all that pressure.”

Richie said Russell had “promise” and asked her to put the big shoes of her family back in the closet, saying “that’s not your size.”

“We’ve just got to lift you up and get you more confident, and you just need to own it,” Bryan added.

All three judges gave Russell a yes, sending her forward to the Hollywood round.

“I was thinking about my grandma, but I was also like, ‘Emmy, she’s with you. Now it’s your turn,’” Russell said after her audition. “I think I’m more like her now than I was whenever I was trying to be like her.”

Lynn, best known for songs such as “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man),” died in October 2022 at the age of 90.

‘American Idol’ judges stunned by 21-year-old California singer. ‘May be the winner’

Californian Abi Carter wowed “American Idol” judges on the show’s Feb. 25 broadcast.

Californian Abi Carter wowed “American Idol” judges on the show’s Feb. 25 broadcast.

Screengrab from American Idol YouTube video

A piano intro chimed through our screens. A crystalline voice floated above it.

Abi Carter, an Indio, California, native, accompanied herself on the piano, singing Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” for the “American Idol” judges on the show’s Feb. 25 broadcast.

As she sang, a deep stillness settled into the audition room.

The song seemed like breathing for the 21-year-old singer. Her voice crescendoed with the piano and the passion of the song. Then, the intensity dissipated.

Her voice wafted into the final chords and into the quiet. The room was still.

Suddenly, all three judges stood up, applauding. And they weren’t the only ones. The crew members on set were clapping too.

“That may be the winner of ‘American Idol’ right there,” judge Luke Bryan said. “I’ve never heard the crew clap.”

The cameras caught Carter’s eyes — wide as she watched the room’s reactions.

“We don’t have to vote,” said judge Lionel Richie.

Without a vote, the judges gave Carter a gold ticket that will send her to Hollywood for the next round of “American Idol.” Gold tickets are given to select contestants whose auditions impress the judges.

Carter is a multi-instrumentalist, a singer and the second of seven children in a close-knit religious family with a single mom, she said. Her music is the story of a village.

Despite their busy household, Carter’s mom Andrea F. Engel Carter always supported her daughter’s love of music, gifting her a keyboard when she was young so that she could start gigging.

In the Feb. 25 broadcast, viewers saw Engel Carter and other members of Carter’s family with their ears pressed against the audition door, tears of pride in their eyes.

In 2016, when Carter was 13, she performed with Engel Carter, who is also a vocalist, for Open Call, an annual sold-out event at a 1,127-seat theater in Southern California. The two won “Best Vocal Act” that year, Coachella Valley Weekly reported.

According to a Facebook post announcing the duo’s participation, Carter auditioned for Open Call to help her mom with her stage fright. She also told the organizers that it was her dream “to be able to make a living using her voice.”

In 2018, Engel Carter noticed an announcement for a guitar giveaway by acclaimed bluesman John Carey, according to Coachella Valley Weekly.

Engel Carter wrote to him, saying she wanted her daughter to have the opportunity to win the guitar. According to an interview with Carey in Coachella Valley Weekly, Carter was one of 12 students who submitted her grades and an essay as to why she should be chosen to receive the guitar.

She won. After one of Carey’s performances, she was awarded the Schecter electric magenta guitar, according to the outlet. That day, she performed with Carey, playing her new guitar.

“I chose Abi because of her overall plan to achieve greatness through education and understanding that education comes first,” Carey told Coachella Valley Weekly.

In her interview with the paper, Carter credited her mom.

“She is my rock, my motivation, and who I strive to be like. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her guiding me along the way,” Carter told the outlet.

Six years later, on “American Idol,” she echoed this sentiment.

“My mom is my biggest supporter,” Abi said during the episode.

At the end of her audition, her family rushed into the audition room for a rowdy, heartwarming group hug.

After her audition, viewers watched as Carter’s ticket got upgraded from gold to platinum. This rare tier means that when she goes to Hollywood, she gets to skip the first round altogether and go straight to round two. According to “American Idol,” only three people are awarded platinum tickets.

“I cannot begin to express my gratitude for the sheer AMOUNT of support I have received,” Carter wrote in a post on Instagram. “I couldn’t feel more loved right now.”

Indio is about 130 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

  • Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest back for Season 22 of ‘American Idol’

Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest back for Season 22 of ‘American Idol’

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacrest will be taking viewers down the yellow brick road on the new season of “American Idol.”

“Home” will be one of the big themes for Season 22 of the reality competition series, as the show will visit hometowns of past winners like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. But in the end, all the contestants are hoping to hear one special phrase:

“It’s one of the great moments that every contestant wants to hear,” said Seacrest. “It is….”

“You’re going to Hollywood!” cheered Bryan, Perry and Richie.

“I say that in my sleep now,” laughed Perry.

These three judges are back for their seventh season on “Idol.” Seacrest has been at the helm as host since the beginning of the competition series.

Do they have fun? No doubt. However, they also know that for many of the contestants there is something much deeper going on here.

“Sometimes we’re kind of investing in the future too. These kids come from these backgrounds that nobody ever helped them in their music journey,” said Bryan.

    “Or in life,” said Richie.

“So we like to, sometimes, roll the dice on somebody to see how they grow,” said Bryan. “It’s just magic. They create magic and you can’t take your eyes off of them.”

“We want the best for them and you know we are going to put them through their paces because we want them to win but yeah I know like, I can read the room anywhere I go that’s like my little special intuitive skill,” said Perry.

“I know that they don’t understand the journey that we have the ability to take them on. And so I’m sitting there, holding in our collective hands here, an opportunity for them to go forward,” said Richie.

Seacrest told us what we can expect from this season’s contestants: “Great stories, great voices. We think every time, you know, I talk about it, what’s gonna be out there? What’s left to find? What can we mine from this great nation? Well, a lot. And they did it.”

“American Idol” returns Sunday, Feb. 18 on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.

  • Kelly Clarkson reveals she ‘never wanted to get married’ to ex Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson reveals she ‘never wanted to get married’ to ex Brandon Blackstock

If Kelly Clarkson had her druthers, she never would have married Brandon Blackstock.

The multiple Grammy and Daytime Emmy Award winner has opened about her ill-fated marriage to her former husband-manager, from whom she finalized her divorce in 2022.

The “American Idol” alum first filed for divorce in 2020 after seven years of marriage.

“I never wanted to get married the first time,” she told People in an interview published this week. “[Brandon] had children, a religious background, and it was important, I think, for him. But I’ve never been that person. Because I’ve been through a couple divorces in my family, I just don’t like to put any weight on it.”

“It can happen; it doesn’t have to happen,” she said, when asked if she’d consider getting married again. “For my kids, I definitely would never even think about it until they’re out of my house.”

The exes share two young children — daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7.

On a 2020 episode of her eponymous daytime talk show, Clarkson said she “definitely didn’t see anything coming that came,” in her regards to the end of her marriage.

“Divorce is never easy, and we’re both from divorced families, so, you know, we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts,” the “Stronger” singer said at the time.

In March 2022, Clarkson was ordered to pay her ex a one-time payment of just over $1.32 million, monthly installments of $115,000 in spousal support until Jan. 31, 2024, and $45,601 monthly in child support for their kids.

But in November 2023, the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement ruled that Blackstock had to return more than $2.6 million to Clarkson for fees he took out from her projects when he was her manager.

Blackstock, the former stepson of country music star Reba McEntire, is reportedly weighing options to appeal that decision.

As far as her future love life is concerned, Clarkson isn’t ruling out romance again — but it will be on her terms.

“I told a friend [that a potential partner] would have to be an individual that brings their own life to the table without needing anything from me,” she shared.
