  • New on Netflix: In ‘The Beast in Me,’ Claire Danes brings the crazy again as only she can

    [ad_1]

    Premieres Wednesday:

Being Eddie — Did you know that Shalimar Seiuli, the trans hooker Eddie Murphy was caught with in 1998, died a year later, after falling five stories down the face of her apartment building? Don’t expect to hear that fun factoid in this official retrospective of the legendary comedian’s career. But maybe we’ll get to see “James Brown’s Celebrity Hot Tub Party” again. (Netflix)

A Merry Little Ex-Mas — On the cusp of their divorce, Alicia Silverstone and Oliver Hudson have plans to spend one final holiday together. But when his new girlfriend shows up, even that humble aspiration becomes a tall order. See, this is why it’s always better to make a clean break, like the Murdaughs did. (Netflix)

    Premieres Thursday:

The Beast in Me — Afflicted by writer’s block since losing her son, an author (Claire Danes) gets interested in life again when a suspected murderer moves in next door. And why shouldn’t she? In the best-case scenario, she could get a whole new novel out of it. Especially if she can figure out how to outsource the adverbs to ChatGPT. (Netflix)

Tiffany Haddish Goes Off — The irrepressible comic actor and some of her childhood buddies take a wacky girls’ trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. No Nigeria, though, because a Signal chat they’re all on said some shit is about to go down. (Peacock)

    Premieres Friday:

Come See Me in the Good Light — Documentary cameras follow married poets Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley as they navigate Gibson’s diagnosis of ovarian cancer. This doc won the Festival Film Favorite Award at this year’s Sundance, just five months before Gibson passed away. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame want you to know they could be just as punctual if this country would get off its ass and standardize Daylight Saving Time. (Apple TV)

The Creep Tapes Season 2 — David Dastmalchian is among the guest stars as the found-footage series profiles new victims of the insidious Peachfuzz. Coincidentally, “the insidious peach fuzz” is what Usha has been calling JD ever since he started coming home smelling like Erika Kirk and White Claw. (Shudder and AMC+)

Malice — It’s Saltburn without the whacking off, as a vengeful nanny (Jack Whitehall) plots the destruction of an upper-class British family headed by David Duchovny. Wait a minute, if it’s Fox Mulder we’re talking about, this is probably more like BRIGHTburn. WITH whacking off. (Prime Video )

Nouvelle Vague — Richard Linklater dramatizes the filming of Godard’s Breathless in what Variety called “an enchanting ode to the rapture of cinema.” In their spare time, they all break into Barnes & Noble together and lick the Criterion Collection. (Netflix)

The Seduction — The umpteenth riff on Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a prequel series that has roles for Anamaria Vartolomei, Diane Kruger and Vincent Lacoste. Not to be outdone, Disney+ has placed an eight-episode order for Cruel Intentions Babies. (HBO Max)

    Premieres Sunday:

Landman — High-profile cast additions in Season 2 of the Texas big-oil drama include Colm Feore, Andy Garcia and Sam Elliott. Wait a minute, you’re telling me Sam Elliott wasn’t already in this thing? I thought SAG had a rule that you have to hire him if your show is set west of New Orleans and there’s a role for Dennis Weaver with pharyngitis. (Paramount+)

    Premieres Monday:

Epic Ride: The Story of Universal Theme Parks — This glorified ad for the Universal family of parks has now been delayed two times since its promised launch last July. The problem is that they keep having to update it every time somebody snuffs it on Stardust Racers. (Peacock)

The Mighty Nein — While you wait for the fifth and final season of The Legend of Vox Machina, enjoy the same cast of Critical Role principals in this stopgap animated show set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Or you could just visit your local comic shop on whatever day of the week everybody’s mom cleans out the basement. (Prime Video)

Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy — The Tejano sensation’s short but groundbreaking career is recapped in a doc that also won big at year’s Sundance, this one in the category of Archival Storytelling. The runner-up in that category: “The Inspiring Life and Brilliant Future of Andrew Cuomo.” (Netflix)

Plus everything else premiering on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock and Disney+ this week

All the streaming shows debuting this week on Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video and the rest

  • How ‘Talamasca: The Secret Order’ Made Jason Schwartzman’s Character an ‘Unexpected Vampire’

    [ad_1]

Fans of AMC’s Interview With the Vampire and Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles know its world contains a wide range of vampire types. Interview With the Vampire‘s third season, retitled The Vampire Lestat, will give us a rock n’ roll creature of the night when it arrives next year. But AMC’s latest Anne Rice series, Talamasca: The Secret Order, has its own offbeat vampire variation in Jason Schwartzman’s character, Burton.

The show’s main character, Guy (Nicholas Denton), is a new recruit into the Talamasca. He’s startled by his first meeting with Burton, an “unexpected vampire,” according to co-showrunner John Lee Hancock. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Hancock explained why the show wanted the offbeat character to stand out.

“We’ve got this skeptic [Guy] who’s going to meet a vampire, and who is that vampire? I wanted it to be complicated,” Hancock said. “I didn’t want it to be a dark room with someone in a velvet chair, looking, and you see their eyes, even though I knew that would be scary. I wanted to meet it on its own terms. So who’s the unexpected vampire?”

He continued. “The thing about that character is that he is someone who has sold out vampires. He is being put up in the Dakota in New York and has a wonderful life. Yet it’s lonely, and he doesn’t fully trust the Talamasca, even though they’re paying his way and bringing him gifts,” Hancock explained. “In my mind, all those televisions that are up on the wall—he doesn’t have a lot of friends, so he and the woman who runs his life, along with Helen [Elizabeth McGovern’s character], probably sit on Tuesday night and watch reality television on Bravo. That’s not a vampire that I’ve seen, and I like that.”

Like those rigorously glamorous Real Housewives, Burton is also image-conscious, according to Hancock.

“He knows he’s being presented. He’s the first vampire that [Guy] has ever met. How does he expect me to look? I told Jason, ‘Here’s the thing I can tell you about this character: he changed clothes five times in anticipation of this meeting to be just right.’ Jason said, ‘That’s a character I can play.’”

New episodes of Anne Rice’s Talamasca: The Secret Order arrive Sundays on AMC and AMC+.

  • Can Colleen Hoover’s ‘Regretting You’ Help Save Movie Theaters?

    [ad_1]

This weekend, Regretting You, the second Colleen Hoover book-to-movie adaptation following last year’s tumultuous release of It Ends With Us, heads to theaters. Written by Susan McMartin and directed by The Fault in Our StarsJosh Boone, the film centers on two star-crossed couples—Morgan (Allison Williams) and Jonah (Dave Franco), as well as Morgan’s teen daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace) and her classmate Miller (Mason Thames), who works at his local AMC Theater. His job isn’t integral to the movie’s soapy romance plot—yet the theater chain’s logo is splashed across multiple scenes.

There are plenty of other sponcon moments in Regretting You: lingering shots of Starry soda, a storyline lifted from the book involving Jolly Ranchers, and repeated scenes where Williams’s character watches Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. (RHOSLC star Heather Gay recently hosted a screening for the movie in her Utah hometown.) But AMC’s integration into the movie feels far more brazen. Some of the most pivotal points in Clara and Miller’s relationship take place within the theater’s walls—most memorably, a scene where Clara halts their makeout session (again, at Miller’s place of work), to declare that she’s a virgin as Clueless plays onscreen. (The obvious virgin-who-can’t-drive joke goes unsaid in the movie.)

AMC has also announced a Regretting You sweepstakes, hosted specially themed screenings, and promoted the movie on social media. Reddit users picked up on the AMC promotion from the trailer alone—and so have multiple film critics since watching the movie. “A truly deranged amount of AMC product placement,” wrote Indie Wire, with The Hollywood Reporter calling the integration “agonizingly unsubtle” in nature. That review also notes the multiple “Paramount plugs,” particularly in relation to Miller’s love of movies. His teenage bedroom is practically a shrine to Paramount Pictures releases of yesteryear—some more realistic for an adolescent boy to idolize (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Patriot Games) than others (who showed this kid Terms of Endearment?).

Vanity Fair has reached out to representatives for both Paramount Pictures and AMC Theatres, but has yet to hear back about the terms of a potential partnership. But it’s not hard to draw the connection, given that AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron said that he expects Paramount to increase its theatrical release slate under the leadership of chairman and CEO David Ellison following the company’s sale to Ellison’s Skydance Media in August. Ellison told CNBC at the time that “we’re going to invest into our studios business” with Paramount releasing 6 to 8 movies next year, and increasing to 15 in 2027.

  • “The Perfect Couple” Review: Netflix’s Messy Murder Mystery is Overrated

“The Perfect Couple” Review: Netflix’s Messy Murder Mystery is Overrated

    [ad_1]

I’ll watch Nicole Kidman in anything. I applaud whenever her AMC ad comes on in the theater. In fact, when I watched Blink Twice, it was the best part of my viewing experience. And I will always-always-always watch Nicole Kidman play an elite woman dripping with cash who has an ambiguous accent and an unhinged family. Thankfully for me, that’s all she seems to be playing these days. And I eat it up every time.

While I’ve mourned and lamented the fact that we’re probably never getting another season of Big Little Lies, Kidman has not been slacking when it comes to prestige drama. She starred in Nine Perfect Strangers, The Undoing, and Expats, playing what TV critics call “the sad wife.” While some call it repetitive, I call it iconic. And the latest entry in this genre is Netflix The Perfect Couple. Messy, murderous, and mysterious, the miniseries is currently going viral for its addictive plot and the TikTok video of a dancey “intro” (opening credits) where the entire cast dances on the beach.

And, as you can probably tell from the dancey intro, it’s a new take on the murder mystery for one key reason: the showrunners wanted it to be fun. It’s based on a beach read, after all, so it’s aiming for a soapy, sundrenched take on the murder mystery. And the result is something between The White Lotus and The Summer I Turned Pretty. I’m not kidding. So, not prestige television but an entertaining watch. Netflix The Perfect Couple is overrated, but perhaps because it’s misunderstood.

What’s the plot of The Perfect Couple?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdpQuXTWup0

In the ever-expanding pantheon of rich-people-behaving-badly content, Netflix The Perfect Couple is the latest entry that attempts to marry Big Little Lies’ glamor-drenched trauma with the sardonic bite of Succession. The result? An unpolished but highly-addictive six-hour binge that’ll make you question everything while also making you wish you live in Nantucket — with friends who wouldn’t murder you.

Let’s start with the premise: It’s wedding season in Nantucket, and the obscenely wealthy Winbury family is about to welcome a new member into their dysfunctional inner circle. Bride-to-be Amelia — played with electric likability and nuance by Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, Flora and Son) — is not from the world of money like the Winburys — and she’s paying for it. In the opening scene, she walks through the house in boxer shorts only to release a ladybug outside. Of course, the matriarch of the house, Greer (Kidman), does not like that.

From snide digs about Amelia’s carb consumption to endless nitpicking about her sartorial choices, Greer’s doubts about the couple are documented plenty. Husband-to-be, Benji, is so devoted to Amelia that he stands up to his domineering mother to defend Amelia — brave for any rich momma’s boy. But his deference to Greer feels justified. Everyone in the family defers to her. She sets a high bar, especially considering her own relationship with Tag (Liev Schreiber), which has been touted as the perfect relationship by everyone — including book publishers. As a bestselling author, Greer’s brand is her everything. And when the maid of honor’s dead body washes up on the shore the morning of the wedding, the ideal world Greer created begins to crumble.

Kidman — fresh off her tour de force role of wig-wearing Grace Fraser in The Undoing — brings her A-game to B-grade material. Her Greer is a master class in barely concealed contempt, with every arched eyebrow screaming, “I’m Nicole Kidman; what am I doing here?” It’s a sentiment the audience might share. But damn if it isn’t fun to watch.

Amelia’s wide-eyed innocence and desire to belong in this family turns into suspicion and resentment as she tries to uncover which of her potential in-laws killed her best friend, Merritt (Meghann Fahy). Since Fahy wowed in The White Lotus Season 2, campy murder mysteries are not new to her. Her turn as seemingly shallow Merritt with secrets of her own is imbued with depth that keeps the audience guessing to the very end.

And, because the women are the most compelling characters in this cast, Dakota Fanning rounds out the mother ensemble as Abby, the heavily pregnant, vanity-obsessed wife of the eldest Winbury son. She’s a cold queen bee, who apparently has more money than Amelia and Merritt, but still trying to win over Greer like the rest of the world.

When the police descend on the Winbury estate on the day of the would-be wedding to dig up the family’s secrets, it seems everyone has something to hide. Classic rich family problems: the dishonest husband cheating on his wife, the obnoxious and entitled eldest son Thomas (Kendall Roy if he had frat energy), the non-white family friend who is, of course, the first suspect. And while the show’s structure isn’t necessarily innovative, it works.

We bounce between police interviews and flashbacks, feeling half-invested in each subplot until the suspense finally finally kicks into gear — mostly because Nicole Kidman dominates the screen in the final few episodes.

But here’s the kicker: despite its middling plot and lackluster character development, The Perfect Couple is oddly… entertaining? The show’s aware that it’s not reinventing the wheel; it’s just hoping you’re too dazzled by the star power to notice the lack of substance.

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Elin Hilderbrand’s book The Perfect Couple and all six episodes of Netflix The Perfect Couple.

How does the book The Perfect Couple end?

Fans have noticed that the TV version of The Perfect Couple is very different from the book. While this is true for many adaptations, most scripts will keep the basic plot points. But in this case, director Susanne Bie and creator Jenna Lamia were intentional about the kind of changes they wanted to see and the tone they wanted to strike. The key words: murder, but make it fun.

Elin Hilderbrand’s novel The Perfect Couple is a murder mystery without the murder. The book ends with a smart, but somewhat underwhelming, revelation: Merritt’s death was an accident.

In the book, Thomas’ wife Abby (Fanning) is the culprit (kind of) but she didn’t mean to drug Merritt. Instead, she puts one of Greer’s sleeping pills into a drink meant for the family’s eccentric, fab foreign friend, who is, in both versions, having an affair with Thomas, her husband. Abby’s intentions were simpler: she just wanted her husband to come to bed, rather than sneaking off to sleep with another woman.

But the drink is accidentally passed to Merritt. She drinks it and heads out on a late night canoe ride with Tag. She then goes into the water to retrieve the ring he gave her (in the series it’s a bracelet). The sleeping pills go into effect as she’s in the water, causing her to drown.

While this makes for a subversion of expectations, it doesn’t make for very exciting TV. Hence the changes. “I realized that it may be more satisfying for the audience to find out that there was a murderer who fully intended to murder the person they murdered,” creator Jenna Lamia told Indie Wire. “We decided that the killer had intended to kill the person she kills, and that she had a very clear motive for doing so, and it wasn’t just jealousy. So [we] added the money plot.”

Who’s the killer in The Perfect Couple ending?

In the series, Abby is still the killer, but this time it’s committed on purpose. Per Lamia’s directives, the motive needed to be fleshed out. For Abby, it was money.

A central tension that drives Merritt’s death is her affair with Tag. As we discover later, Merritt is pregnant with Tag’s baby. When wedding party members learn her secret, many have motive to murder Merritt. The main reason: the family trust fund. The Winbury family trust has a rule that only bestows the money to the boys upon the 18th birthday of the youngest son. If Merritt were to have a baby, the trust would get reset for another 18 years.

With her own baby on the way, Abby’s been pressuring Thomas to move them into a bigger house. She can’t wait another 18 years to finance the lifestyle she expects from being a Winbury — certainly not with Thomas’s risky investments and flagrant affairs. So she kills Merritt.

However, the trust fund motive could not appear in the novel because Will Winbury — the brother on the cusp of his 18th birthday — doesn’t even exist. In the book, there are only two Winbury boys: Benji and Thomas. The addition of Will adds conflict and is causes the show’s ending to really ramp up.

Other character changes range from small to significant. A big one is names. Eve Hewson’s Amelia Sacks in the show, is named Celeste Otis in the books. I like to think they wanted to cast French actress Isabelle Adjani so much that they changed the family friend character from a Londonite named Featherleigh Dale (which, respectfully, is a very Colleen Hoover name) to the aloof French family friend named Isabel Nallet. Also altered: Gosia, the Winbury’s housekeeper, who is named Elida in the book; and family friend Shooter Dival is Shooter Uxley in the book.

The detective in the novel is also quite different. First of all, the fictional version is male. And he tries to keep the peace with the Winburys, hoping to coax cooperation out of them through kindness. In the show, Donna Lynne Champlin plays a version of the detective that has no sympathy for the Winburys and blatantly calls out their privilege. Her relatable and comedic quips serve as a breath of fresh air when you get sick of the Winbury’s entitlement.

The miniseries positions itself as a scathing critique of wealth and privilege, but it often feels like a lifestyle porn video that occasionally realizes it needs a plot. The camera lovingly caresses every inch of the Winbury estate as if it’s auditioning for an Architectural Digest tour. But this light, beachy vibe is intentional. Athough it’s a murder mystery, Lamia wanted the tone to be capricious and fun.

The most talked-about way she achieved her goal? The opening credits dance scene. One second you’re immersed in the narrative’s drama… the next you’re watching the cast doing a choreographed, flash-mob dance sequence.

“You see that it’s directed by Susanne Bier, who did “The Undoing” and “The Night Manager” so incredibly well. So you’re expecting a bit of a self-serious show,” sais Lamua. “But I think when you get to the credits and everyone’s dancing to Meghan Trainor, you have to think, ‘Well, wait a minute. I think this might be a fun ride.’”

And she’s right — the series might not be particularly good in the traditional sense. But in the landscape of peak TV — where every show’s striving to be the next big thing — there’s something refreshing about a show that’s content to be a glossy, star-studded mess.

By the time you reach the finale, you’ll have developed a love-hate relationship with every character, a newfound appreciation for prenuptial agreements, and no desire to ever visit Nantucket. The resolution — when it comes — is both satisfying and eyeroll-inducing — much like the entire series itself.

Four girls between the ages of 9 and 17 years old were stabbed inside a Braintree, Massachusetts, movie theater on Saturday evening, police said. The suspect, who state police in Connecticut say was wanted in connection with the death of a person, was taken into custody after a police chase and crash on Cape Cod. Studio Ghibli Fest will bring 14 movies back to theaters this year, so start planning

    [ad_1]

GKIDS and Fathom Events have announced the lineup for Studio Ghibli Fest 2024, and it’s absolutely stacked with gems. This year’s run includes 14 films and isn’t limited only to the works of Hayao Miyazaki, also featuring movies directed by Isao Takahata, Yoshifumi Kondo, Hiroyuki Morita and Hiromasa Yonebayashi. Studio Ghibli Fest 2024 will start with Spirited Away on April 27 and continue through December, when it ends with My Neighbor Totoro. The movies are playing in select AMC and Regal theaters across the US, with a few dates for each title in both Japanese and English dubbed.

The full list is: Spirited Away (April 27-May 1), Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (May 19 and 21), Castle in the Sky (May 20 and 22), The Secret World of Arrietty (June 9 and 11), When Marnie Was There (June 10 and 12), Princess Mononoke (July 13-17), Ponyo (August 3-7), Whisper of the Heart (August 25 and 27), The Cat Returns (August 26 and 28), Howl’s Moving Castle (September 26-October 3), Kiki’s Delivery Service (October 26-30), Pom Poko (November 24 and 26), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (November 25 and 27), and My Neighbor Totoro (December 7-11).

I’m already crying thinking about watching Nausicaä and Princess Kaguya on the big screen. Actually, you can apply that sentiment to pretty much all of these titles. It’s going to be great. According to the announcement, there will also be “surprise special extra content.”

AMC Will Pay $8.3 Million Settlement for Sharing Subscriber Info

    [ad_1]

    AMC $8.3 Million Settlement

    AMC $8.3 Million Settlement

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit claiming that AMC disclosed the personally identifiable information of registered users of AMC Services such as AMC+, Acorn TV, SundanceNow, and others, to Third-Party Tracking Companies, without their consent. Personally identifiable information includes information which identifies a person as having requested or obtained specific video materials or services from a video tape service provider.

AMC denies that it violated any law. The Court has not determined who is right. Rather, the parties have agreed to the settlement to avoid the uncertainties and expenses associated with continuing the case. Check out all the details below and file a claim on or before April 9, 2024.

    Who’s Eligible for this Settlement?

The Settlement Class is defined as:

    • All persons in the United States who: (1) were registered users of AMC Services through (i) an online website or mobile app owned, controlled, and/or operated by AMC or (ii) any Streaming Service and (2) requested or obtained specific video content from AMC Services through (i) an online website or mobile app owned, controlled, and/or operated by AMC or (ii) any Streaming Service during the Class Period. AMC Services means AMC+, Shudder, Acorn TV, ALLBLK, SundanceNow, and HIDIVE. Note that you are not included in the Settlement Class if you have previously engaged counsel to assert an arbitration claim on your behalf.
    • The Class Period is defined as: January 18, 2021 to and through January 10, 2024.

    Eligible Services

    AMC Services:

    • AMC+
    • Shudder
    • Acorn TV
    • ALLBLK

    Settlement Payout

AMC will pay $8,300,000.00 to create a Settlement Fund. In addition to this monetary relief, the Settlement also requires AMC to suspend, remove or modify operation of the Meta Pixel developed by Meta (formerly known as Facebook) and other tracking technologies developed by the following Third-Party Tracking Companies: Google, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, and Braze.

After deducting attorneys’ fees and expenses, service awards for the class representatives, costs of settlement administration, and any taxes, the Settlement Fund will be distributed to Settlement Class Members as a cash payment on a pro rata basis (meaning equal share). This means each Settlement Class Member who submits a valid claim will be paid an equal share from the Net Settlement Fund.

The amount of the payments to individual Settlement Class Members will depend on the number of valid claims that are filed. Because the final payment amount cannot be calculated before all claims are received and verified, it will not be possible to provide an accurate estimate of the payment amount before the deadline to file claims.

The Court will hold a hearing to consider the fairness of the settlement on May 16, 2024. If the Court approves the settlement, eligible Settlement Class Members whose claims were approved by the Settlement Administrator will receive their payment within 90 days after the Settlement has been finally approved and/or any appeals process is complete.

    Filing a Claim

If you are a Settlement Class Member and you want to receive a payment, you must complete and submit a Claim Form postmarked by April 9, 2024. AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. extended its losing streak to five days Friday, with the stock ending the session down 2.5% to $5.15.

shares are now on their longest losing streak since a seven-day slide that ended on Aug. 29, 2023. The movie-theater chain and onetime meme-stock darling ended Thursday’s session at a then-record-low close of $5.30. AMC was a top trending symbol on Stocktwits, a social platform for investors and traders, at Friday’s open.

The stock’s previous record closing low had been $6.07, which was set on Dec. 21, 2023, according to Dow Jones Market Data, citing available information dating back to Dec. 18, 2013.

The decline in AMC’s share price is a far cry from its meme-stock heyday, when it hit an all-time closing high of $339.05 on June 2, 2021.

In a regulatory filing Tuesday, AMC said that between Dec. 28 and Dec. 29, 2023, the company entered into a series of privately negotiated exchange agreements to issue nearly 3.26 million shares of Class A common stock in exchange for $22.5 million of its notes due in 2026.  The common stock issued had an implied value of $6.94 per share, according to AMC. “The company may engage in similar transactions in the future but is under no obligation to do so,” AMC said in the filing.

The move is the latest in AMC’s attempts to tackle its debt burden, which reached more than $5 billion in 2022. That year, AMC launched its APE special dividend, and in 2023 it completed the conversion of the APEs into AMC common stock and a reverse 1-for-10 split of common stock.

  • This is what we can expect to see from meme stocks in 2024

This is what we can expect to see from meme stocks in 2024

    [ad_1]

It may be a couple of years since the meme-stock feeding frenzy hit its heights, but we’re still seeing occasional bursts of meme-like activity in number of stocks.

No discussion of meme stocks would be complete without OG AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.
    AMC,
    -0.89%
    .
But while the movie theater chain and original meme stock darling still grabs plenty of attention, it no longer fits the bill of a meme stock, according to Alicia Reese, VP of equity research at Wedbush. “AMC has seemingly lost its meme status, its share price having come crashing back down to earth over the past several months, particularly since its APE fold-in and reverse stock split,” she said. “AMC is now trading at a more normalized valuation, even if still at the high-end of its pre-meme historic range.”

AMC’s shares ended Friday’s session at $6.65, a far cry from their high of $393.63 on June 2, 2021, during the meme-stock frenzy.

Related: AMC’s stock falls more than 5% after company completes $350 million equity offering

“AMC’s premium valuation here is driven in part by a sub-section of the shareholders it gained during its meme stage, who have remained loyal to the company and have long claimed to be AMC shareholders for life,” Reese added. “AMC shed all the rest of its meme-era shareholders and are now left with the lifers, along with some institutional shareholders now that valuation has come back to a more normalized range.”

The analyst thinks that in 2024, AMC will continue to issue pre-authorized shares to pay down its high-debt balance, as evidenced by the $350 million equity offering completed this week. “The company is focused on right-sizing the balance sheet, while attempting to maintain strong relations with the AMC lifers still propping up the stock,” said Reese.

Fellow original meme stock GameStop has also been in the news recently, with the company’s board of directors approving a new investment policy, which lets the company invest in equity securities, among other investments. The board also gave Chairman and Chief Executive Ryan Cohen the authority to manage the investment portfolio. The new policy was dubbed “alarming” and “inane” by Wedbush Managing Director Michael Pachter.

“If he can invest in anything – farmland, chicken feed, cryptocurrency – that’s not in the best interests of the shareholders,” he told MarketWatch. “Heaven knows what he will do.”

Related: GameStop’s plan to buy stocks with company cash ‘alarming’ and ‘inane,’ analyst says

As for GameStop, the analyst describes the videogame retailer as a declining business, pointing to the company’s third-quarter revenue of $1.078 billion, which was down from $1.186 billion in the prior year’s quarter. “They are shrinking, period, and they can’t save their way to prosperity,” he added.

The company’s new investment policy could also fuel more meme-style activity, according to Pachter, who says that Cohen’s moves will be closely watched. “He will invest in something and it will possibly become the next meme stock,” the analyst told MarketWatch.

Pachter pointed to Cohen’s decision in 2022 to unload his huge stake in beleaguered home goods retailer and sometime meme stock Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. just months after buying it. In August of that year Cohen sold his entire stake in Bed Bath & Beyond five months after accruing the stake in an activist campaign, amassing a profit of more than $58 million.

Stocktwits, a social platform for investors and traders, told MarketWatch that it has seen a dedicated core audience of retail investors stick with the likes of AMC and GameStop. “Message volume and sentiment have remained elevated on the platform throughout the year, with their audiences growing temporarily around earnings or other events that create volatility,” Tom Bruni, senior writer at Stocktwits, told MarketWatch.

Related: Small-cap Chinese stocks spark meme-like buzz

Retail traders are still on the lookout for high-volatility situations, according to Bruni, who cited the example of Vietnamese electric vehicle stock VinFast Auto Ltd.
    VFS,
    +13.54%
    ,
which had a “crazy month” in August before crashing back down. “However, we would note that there have been fewer instances of these types of meme stocks occurring this year, and their lifespan tended to be pretty short,” he added.

“For stocks with the ‘meme’ potential in 2024, look to beaten-down areas of the market that already have strong retail investor communities around them,” Bruni told MarketWatch. “Several that stick out are electric vehicle stocks (specifically startups), solar stocks, or anything China-related. Traders will likely be looking for stocks at the intersection of these themes, like Lucid Group ($LCID), as potential ‘powder kegs’ for volatility in 2024.”

    Shares of Lucid Group Inc.
    LCID,
    -7.20%

    are down 30.2% in 2023, compared with the S&P 500 index’s
    SPX
    gain of 22.9%.

One thing is for sure – the social media dynamics that created the meme stock phenomenon are not going away. “Internet culture will continue to be more prevalent in markets as the world becomes more digitized and young people age into participation,” Tommy Tranfo, head of community at Stocktwits, told MarketWatch. “Crypto markets are an area where we expect to see a large concentration of this activity, particularly within the context of a crypto bull market, which will likely bring in a new wave of market participants who will skew toward the internet culture demo.”

Related: This EV company has a bigger market cap than Ford or GM. But you may not have heard of it.

“New crypto meme communities such as the $BONK (a dog-themed coin on the Solana blockchain) are already clear examples of this craze taking place,” he added.

‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’: AMC Issues Guidelines for Headwear and Wings

    [ad_1]

Following the fervor over Taylor Swift‘s The Eras Tour, AMC Theatres has issued a set of guidelines for the Beyhive as fans make their way to see Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé that includes asking moviegoers to take off costume pieces during the movie that could block the view for others, such as hats and wings.

The theater chain — which is also distributing both films — released the guidelines as the superstar’s concert movie opens across North America, where it’s on course for a better-than-expected $21 million-$24 opening after earning a coveted A+ CinemaScore and stellar reviews.

Like the Swifties, the Beyhive are encouraged to take selfies, dress up and sing during the screenings. They also are given the same warnings about not recording the actual film, not dancing on seats or blocking fellow theatergoers from “viewing, safely walking or exiting the auditorium,” according to the guidelines, which are posted on AMC’s website.

“You know the words, you know the choreography — sing & dance your heart out, but please respect each other’s space along with the theatre equipment,” the theater wrote.

AMC also offered up a handful of rules more specific to those members of the Beyoncé-loving crowd who may want to emulate the superstar’s elaborate wardrobe.

“We want to see your amazing outfits! Feel free to take selfies and group shots to celebrate the occasion and the beautiful ensembles you came up with,” states AMC. But the guidelines continue to say, “If parts of your outfit will potentially block other viewers from the screen, please remove them as the film begins (ex. headwear, wings, etc.), and please keep in mind that masks (except for standard face masks used explicitly for health and safety reasons) are not permitted.”

The no-mask edict is blanket policy for AMC because of security issues.

While Swifties were also encouraged to be respectful of other guests in their specific theater as well common locations such as the lobby, those attending the Beyoncé concert movie were specifically encouraged to “save your energy for once you are inside the Renaissance” screening.

AMC also made sure to let customers know that Renaissance runs two hours and 48 minutes on top of 15 to 20 minutes of trailers, and advised the Beyhive to “plan your bathroom breaks or other needs accordingly.”

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé looks to score the biggest opening for the first weekend of December since Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai debuted to $24.3 million 20 years ago in 2003, not adjusted for inflation. Beyoncé’s film has held on to its perfect 100 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes since Friday with the number of reviews doubling from nine to 18, in addition to an increase in from a near-perfect 99 percent audience score from 100 verified users to 100 percent from more than 250 reviews on Saturday.

To celebrate the film’s opening, Beyoncé dropped a new song, “My House,” the first new music from the artist since the release of Renaissance last year. The multiphyenate, who is now the most Grammy-awarded singer in history, also hosted star-studded red carpet premieres in Los Angeles and London. Swift — whose Eras Tour film opened in October to its own record-setting $92.8 million — was in attendance at the west coast event after Beyoncé also appeared at the L.A. premiere of Swift’s film.

Revenue grew 45.2% to $1.406 billion, above the FactSet consensus of $1.260 billion. AMC’s adjusted Ebitda was $194 million.

“For both revenue and adjusted Ebitda, these were AMC’s most successful third-quarter results in our company’s entire 103-year history, by definition being greater than the third quarter of pre-pandemic 2019,” AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron said in a statement. “For the second consecutive quarter, AMC reported positive net income, and we ended the quarter with $730 million of cash. This all suggests that we are well underway on our growth path to recovery from the ravages of the COVID pandemic.”

“What is perhaps most impressive of all is that our success in the third quarter came at a time when our attendance at the domestic box office in the quarter was still 16% below comparable 2019 levels,” Aron added. “That success is because our contribution per patron was up 30% versus 2019.”

Admissions revenue was $797.7 million, above the FactSet consensus of $739 million. Food and beverage revenue was $482.7 million, above the FactSet consensus of $449 million.

The AMC CEO also discussed the success of Taylor Swift’s record-breaking concert film, which opened Oct. 12. “Both as distributor and exhibitor, AMC benefited handsomely,” he said, adding that AMC Theatres Distribution is following this success with the release of “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” which hits theaters globally Dec. 1.

“In working with two of the most admired pop stars on the planet, we already have touched lightning,” Aron added. “We are optimistic, though, that this will lead to much more ahead … we believe that we will have several more concert film products in 2024 and 2025. We intend to be working with some of the most known and most loved musical artists the world has ever known.”

Taylor Swift Still Bejeweled With $32M Second Weekend; ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ Brings Adults Back To Cinemas With $23M Opening & A- CinemaScore – Box Office Update

    [ad_1]

UPDATED SATURDAY AM: Refresh for more updates and analysis The overall box office at around $87.3M is off 23% from a year ago, but AMC‘s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Apple and Paramount‘s Martin Scorsese movie, Killers of the Flower Moon are keeping business flowing and popcorn popping with respective weekend takes of $32M and $23M; the latter an exceptional start for what is a very long movie — longer than Oppenheimer– and a great beginning for Apple’s foray into the wide theatrical business, especially at a time when actors can’t promote due to the actors strike. Imagine if there wasn’t an actors strike, how much higher this could go? Also, an applaudable start for a period movie, this being set in the 1920s; quite often tracking sources pin ‘period’ as a factor which dogs grosses. And the exits are great for Killers of the Flower Moon: With an A- CinemaScore, Killers of the Flower Moon is up there with Scorsese’s top rated by the audience polling org, i.e. The Departed (A-) and Goodfellas (A-). Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak remains high at 88% and 4 1/2 stars and a 72% recommend. CinemaScore audiences have been hard on several Scorsese classics, and haven’t handed him many As during his career in the pollster’s era i.e. Casino (B-), The Aviator (B+), Gangs of New York (B), Wolf of Wall Street (C) and Shutter Island (C+).

At $23M+, Killers of the Flower Moon is just north of DiCaprio’s opening box office average with Scorsese of $19M, and it’s the best start for a De Niro and Scorsese combo beating Cape Fear‘s $10.2M opening.

Taylor won Friday at $10.4M to Killers of the Flower Moon‘s $9.4M which includes Thursday previews of $2.6M.

What’s working here? First, let’s start with the fact that the movie was promoted to the entire Apple sub base on Apple TV+; and they were told not to stay home. It’s DiCaprio, Scorsese and De Niro, and to any clear thinking adult moviegoer, that’s a call to get off your couch (81% were over 25). Throw in the fact that the movie is based on a best-selling book. Apple since blasting the movie off with the support of its cast out of Cannes has kept the loudspeakers on in the pic’s promotion with a robust outdoor campaign (go to the Century City Mall and digital billboards for Killers of the Flower Moon are all around you).

iSpot measured a very robust TV ad spend for the film at $15.4M which reached 1.12 billion household TV impressions. Spots aired across NFL football, (13.7%), College Football (6.9%), MLB (4.6%), Law & Order SVU (3.0%) and House Hunters (2.4%) with top network ad runs on ESPN (9.6%), FOX (9.5%), CBS (8.6%), NBC (6.3%) and ABC (6.2%).

It’s also a western, and while some thought this movie would simply play well in New York and LA, its strongest regions are the South and the West. For Paramount, in some ways this is reminiscent to the Coen Bros’ True Grit, which was a wide appealing western for them, and had a $24.8M start; however, that pic had some legs. We’ll see where Killers of the Flower Moon roams. Top theater in the nation belongs to AMC Lincoln Square which has minted over $71K so far. PLFs and Imax are driving 37% of ticket sales.

Demo diagnostics for Killers of the Flower Moon on PostTrak are 61% Male / 39% Female with 46% of the audience between 18-34 years old and the largest quad being 25-34 years old at 27% with an amazing 38% of the audience over 45. Diversity demos were 54% Caucasian, 21% Latino and Hispanic, 10% Black, 8% Asian and 8% Native American/other, the latter who gave the movie about the Osage Nation tragedy an 84% grade. Best grades for the movie were from the under 25 guys demos, who didn’t show up in bulk at 13%, who gave the DiCaprio-De Niro movie a 90% grade.

UPDATED, FRIDAY MIDDAY: AMC’s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is currently looking to hold onto the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office with a second estimated Friday of $10.25 million, off 73% week over week, for what’s looking like a second weekend around $32 million at 3,855 theaters, -66%. That’s a very similar second-weekend decline to Disney’s 2008 concert film Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert. The running total for Eras Tour by EOD Sunday would be $130.7M.

Meanwhile, Apple Original Films and Paramount’s 3-hour and 26-minute Martin Scorsese movie Killers of the Flower Moon is looking pretty good. Booked at 3,628 theaters, Friday is shaping up to be $9M ahead of a $22M three-day opening. Some rival distribs even have it higher.

Third place at 3,364 theaters is PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie with $1.2M in its fourth Friday and a fourth weekend of $5.1M, -26%, and a running total of $56.7M.

Disney rereleased Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas in 1,650 theaters with an estimated Friday of $1.45M and a three-day total of $4.3M.

Universal/Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer is looking at fifth place with $1.25M in its third Friday at 3,323 theaters and a three-day of $3.95M, -64%, and a running total by Sunday of $52.6M.

PREVIOUSLY, FRIDAY AM: The AMC-distributed Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour returned to theaters Thursday at around noon after a three-day pause, pulling in $5.9 million per industry estimates. This takes the running total of the Sam Wrench-directed concert film to $98.7M at 3,855 theaters. Meanwhile, Apple Original Films’ big splash into wide theatrical releases with Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, distributed by Paramount, drew $2.6 million in previews that began at 2 p.m. Why so early? The movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro is 3 hours and 26 minutes long.

Comps to Killers of the Flower Moon are Ford v. Ferrari at $2.1M and Elvis which did $3.5M. Elvis at 2 hours and 39 minutes opened to $31.2M, while Ford v. Ferrari at 2 hours and 32 minutes had a $31.4M start.

Heading into the weekend, many are expecting it’s Swift’s to lose with, at a bare minimum, a second-weekend take of $27M, off 70% from Week 1. However, no one has been able to gauge 100% the trajectory of this young female-skewing pic. While we heard most of the presales were for last weekend, we’ll see if the Swifties show up again this weekend.

That said, in an autumn box office season turned upside down by the actors strike, and thespians unable to promote, many are bullish on the first-weekend prospects of Killers of the Flower Moon exceeding a $20M+ start. By the way, that’s just north of the $19M opening-weekend average for a DiCaprio movie with Scorsese.

Paramount made sure that Killers of the Flower Moon had all the Imax and PLF screens working to its upside this weekend. Some wouldn’t be surprised if it beats Swift. The last time the actors promoted the movie was back at its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in May. After the wattage of such movies like The Creator and A Haunting in Venice were squashed by the actors strike, how could a long movie like Killers of the Flower Moon actually break through? Many attribute its possible upside to DiCaprio’s star power, the fact that Scorsese (who brings in moviegoers) has been out there promoting, a vacancy for such star -owered big pics on the marquee, plus the fact that the movie is based on a bestselling novel by David Grann.

Among several exclusives that Deadline has reported about Killers of the Flower Moon, Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas won the book rights back in 2016, shelling out $5M. Apple won the auction for the Scorsese-DiCaprio-De Niro package, the film costing around $200M-lplus after Oklahoma tax credits.

Already, early audience Comscore/Screen Engine exits are showing there’s not a divide between moviegoers and critics when it comes to Killers of the Flower Moon. While movie reviewers are at 93% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, PostTrak shows 4 1/2 stars, 87% positive and a 72% recommend. While men over 25 repped half of last night’s crowd and women over 25 another 30%, it was men under 25 at 13% who gave the movie its best grades, that being 95%. Overall guys showed up at 64%. These demos will fluctuate throughout the weekend.

Apple Original Films has not set a streaming date for the movie as they want a long theatrical window during awards season.

Top theaters last night for the Scorsese movie came from New York, Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, San Francisco, Toronto, Boston and Vancouver.

Rest of yesterday: Universal/Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer saw around $746,000, -9% from Wednesday, for a two-week running total of $48.6M. Pic was booked at 3,684 theaters.

Third belongs to Indian action movie Leo: Bloody Sweet. Although it made $679K yesterday stateside and $1.87M on Wednesday at 720 theaters for a two-day total of $2.5M, the Joseph Vijay-starring feature directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj broke several box office records with Rs 63 crore (630 million) in India on day one across all languages, the biggest opening for a Kollywood film in India. Abroad, the pic made Rs 66 crore (Rs 660 million). Global take is Rs 130 crore (1.3 billion). Leo has joined blockbusters like RRR, Baahubali 2, KGF 2 and Pathaan among titles that have crossed Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) worldwide on their opening day.

Pic follows Parthiban, a mild-mannered cafe owner in Kashmir, as he fends off a gang of murderous thugs. He gains attention from a drug cartel who claims he was once a part of them.

    Here’s the trailer:

Lionsgate‘s Saw X saw $499K yesterday, -3% from Wednesday, for a $43.6M three-week running total. The sequel is playing at 3,058 theaters.

Another Indian movie Bhagavanth Kesari was on the charts, opening Wednesday with $541K at 620 locations, and grossing another $155,600 yesterday for a two-day take of $696K. The Anil Ravipudi-directed movie follows Nelakonda Bhagavanth Kesari, who is adamant about getting even with a powerful businessman who cost him money. He is prepared to square off against the formidable foe and resolve their issues amicably.
