Amazon Reveals New Drone Meant For Fast Urban Deliveries

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Though Amazon is preparing to introduce its Prime Air drone delivery service, the retail monolith is looking ahead to 2024, when it plans to use a more capable, quieter drone for urban deliveries.

    Joseph Prezioso | Getty Images

A report from CNBC stated that Prime Air would launch the 80-pound MK27 drone this year. It will begin making deliveries in College Station, Texas, and Lockeford, California. The drone can’t carry anything heavier than five pounds, and its payload will be about the size of a shoe box.

With 2024 in mind, however, Amazon demonstrated the MK30 drone in Boston on November 11th. The new drone is designed to be more versatile, but it’s also supposed to be quieter. It’s roughly the same size as the MK27, but Axios reports that it “is nimble enough to make deliveries in highly populated areas such as Boston, Atlanta and Seattle.”

The MK30 can fly further than its predecessor and operate in mildly inclement weather. Additionally, Axios reports that it sports “new ‘sense-and-avoid’ safety features that allow it to operate … while skirting other aircraft, people, pets and obstacles.”

With redesigned propellers, the new drone will also be quieter. However, Axios notes that payloads will still need to be less than five pounds altogether.

While drone delivery service still seems like a novel idea, Amazon’s goals are nothing less than ambitious. By the end of the 2020s, the company plans to deliver up to a half-billion packages each year.

There Are Only Hours Left To Score 30% Off Apple AirPods

    [ad_1]

Thanksgiving is over. Black Friday is done. And yet the Cyber Monday deals are still raging on. If you’ve been looking for a sign to upgrade your static-y off-brand earbuds, it seems like every store in the world is offering sales on Apple AirPods and AirPods Pros right now. But don’t you worry — we rounded up the best Cyber Monday deals on these covetable listening devices.

From Walmart to Target to Amazon to Best Buy, here are the best places to score AirPods for less. Unlike cheaper rival brands, Apple AirPods magically connect to all your favorite devices and can seamlessly switch between your MacBook, phone and tablet when you’re working at home. Best of all, they use the same charger as your iPhone, so that’s one less wire to get tangled in knots.

They come with a compact carrying case that doubles as a portable charger, letting you continue to listen to your favorite songs and audiobooks as you run errands or commute to work. And they have a built-in microphone and are Siri-enabled so you can take calls and Google the weather without even pulling your phone out of your back pocket.

HuffPost receives a share from retailers on this page. Every item is independently selected by the HuffPost Shopping team. Prices and availability are subject to change.

  • You Can Get An Xbox Series S For Under $200 Today

You Can Get An Xbox Series S For Under $200 Today

    [ad_1]

The Xbox S in its seasonal box.

    Image: Microsoft / Kotaku

The Xbox Series S is one of my favorite purchases. It’s the little machine that could, a less powerful version of a next-gen console, that somehow is able to run everything anyway. Today you can get one for under $200, the cheapest it’s ever been—even cheaper than last week’s cheapest ever. You know, if you don’t mind being part of the evils of corporate America.

I know this reads like one of those posts where Kotaku gets a giant wad of cash for every purchase, but honestly, I’m writing this up because it’s so damned cheap. The catch is you need to buy it through Amazon, and Amazon is awful.

As spotted by IGN for this Cyber Monday, Amazon has the Xbox Series S at $237.99. However, when you buy the “Holiday Console,” you also get $40 of Amazon credit if you put in the code “XBOX” at checkout.

Did I lie? Is it really under $200 if you need to pay $238 to get the credit? I’m going with: yes. Because, the truth is, we all buy from Amazon all the damn time, even though we know we shouldn’t. Even though we know how it treats its workers. Even though it is about to cut 10,000 jobs likely because the home surveillance machine Alexa is a colossal $10bn flop.

So, you know, having $40 on your Amazon account is the same as having $40 in your bank account that you’d have spent on Amazon anyway. In fact, the next $40-worth of stuff you buy from Amazon will feel like it’s free! It doesn’t matter that you put the money there yourself, it’ll still feel like a free thing when you order, and the checkout says it’s covered. We’re so stupid.

However, you do end up getting a really awesome console, while giving Microsoft, that already sells it at a loss, far less money. Sure, you’ll end up spending a fortune more on expanded storage for it, because the S comes with a ludicrous 364GB free on its puny SSD. And yeah, you’re going to pay a monthly tithe to Game Pass for there to be any point in owning it. And then you’ll need that second controller…

Capitalism is evil! But we still want games consoles, and this is the cheapest way you’re going to get a brand new one. Now, who wants to give me a job in advertorial?

  • After food delivery and education, Amazon to shut distribution services in India

After food delivery and education, Amazon to shut distribution services in India

    [ad_1]

Tech and e-commerce giant Amazon has decided to shut its distribution services in India after closing its food delivery and education service, Business Today has learnt.

The company plans to focus on its core business and is cutting back on other verticals. A source told Business Today, “This step was taken in light of the economic slowdown, the company will focus more on core businesses now on.”

Amazon Distribution operates mainly in Bengaluru, Hubli, and Mysore and employs roughly 50 people. The distribution unit sources fast moving consumer goods from companies and distributes them to retailers.

Business Today has reached out to Amazon for a comment on the development. The copy will be updated when the company responds.

Amazon India decided to shut its food delivery service, Amazon Food, on Friday, as a part of its annual operating planning review process.

The tech behemoth also pulled the plug on its ed-tech service, Amazon Academy, last week. Amazon Academy was launched by the company during the COVID-19 lockdown when ed-tech companies like BYJU’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, and others witnessed a boom.

The company was summoned by the Labour Ministry last week for a hearing regarding its Voluntary Separation Program, a plan under which Indian employees were urged to exit from the company in lieu of certain monetary benefits.

The deputy chief commissioner at the Labour Ministry, A Anjanappa, summoned Amazon’s senior public policy manager, Smitha Sharma, along with the employee association NITES for a hearing.

In the hearing, the company claimed that the exits by employees were voluntary and no undue pressure was put on employees to resign. Employee representatives could not attend the hearing and requested a postponement. Business Today has learnt that the meeting will reconvene in two to three weeks’ time.

Amazon workers in 30 other countries protest on Black Friday

    [ad_1]

Amazon workers and activists in 30 countries marked the traditional start of holiday shopping season with a series of walkouts and protests to demand better pay and working conditions.

In Manhattan, activists, labor unions and Amazon workers marched outside company founder Jeff Bezos’ penthouse in the tony Flatiron district.

Outside St. Louis, a few dozen workers walked out of the massive STL8 facility on Friday afternoon. It’s the second wildcat strike at the 900,000-square-foot fulfillment center, where workers also picketed in September to protest pay and working conditions. Workers at the location are calling for a raise of $10 an hour and the improvement of working conditions they say lead to too many workers being injured on the job.

The groups involved with the campaign are promoting it on Twitter under the hashtag #MakeAmazonPay. They have a range of demands. Many are asking for increased pay, an end to worker surveillance and a pace of work conducive to an above-average rate of workplace injuries.

Labor actions are also planned at Whole Foods stores, which Amazon owns, and at other locations in Bessemer, Alabama; Columbia, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Durham, North Carolina; Garner, North Carolina; Joliet, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C.

In Germany, workers demonstrated at nine out of 20 warehouses Amazon has in the country, the company told Reuters, although it said the “vast majority” of employees reported to work as usual.

In Coventry, England, workers rallied in the evening outside an Amazon facility, saying “We are not robots.”

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, some activists rallied in front of the National Congress building holding signs reading, “Make Amazon Pay.”

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment on the actions.

“On Black Friday, in what has already been named #MakeAmazonPay day, unions, civil society and progressive elected officials will stand shoulder to shoulder in a massive global day of action to denounce Amazon’s despicable multimillion dollar campaigns to kill worker-lead union efforts,” Christy Hoffman, general secretary of UNI Global Union, a group spearheading the protests, said in a statement. “It’s time for the tech giant to cease their awful, unsafe practices immediately, respect the law and negotiate with the workers who want to make their jobs better.”

    Global protest

Among the countries where Amazon is facing strikes and protests, according to UNI: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey and the U.K.

Monika di Silvestre, an official with Ver.di, a German labor group helping to organize the #MakeAmazonPay campaign, told Bloomberg that workers are particularly concerned with Amazon’s use of computers to monitor their productivity.

“The workers are under a lot of pressure with these algorithms,” she said. “It doesn’t differentiate between workers, whether they are old or have limited mobility. Workers stay awake at night thinking only of their productivity stats.”

Nearly half of all injuries recorded in U.S. warehouses in 2021 occurred at Amazon, according to the Strategic Organizing Center, a coalition of unions.

“Amazon employed one-third of all warehouse workers in the U.S., but it was responsible for nearly one-half (49%) of all injuries in the warehouse industry,” according to the report by the SOC.

Amazon has previously defended its safety record and denied that injury rates are higher at the company’s warehouses.

Unions vs. Amazon: A David and Goliath story

    05:00

The company has faced mounting pressure in the U.S. from workers seeking to unionize. Earlier this year, a warehouse on Staten Island in New York City became the first Amazon fulfillment center to organize, and other facilities have also filed for collective bargaining rights. Most recently, workers at an Amazon warehouse in upstate New York voted against unionizing.

A federal judge last week ordered Amazon to stop retaliating against employees participating in workplace activism. The ruling came in a court case brought by the National Labor Relations Board, which sued Amazon in March seeking the reinstatement of a fired employee who was involved in organizing the company’s Staten Island warehouse.

Amazon workers in the U.S. and 30 other countries plan Black Friday protests

    [ad_1]

Amazon workers and labor activists in roughly 30 countries, including the U.S., plan to walk off the job and stage other protests on Friday to demand better pay and working conditions.

The campaign, which the groups are promoting on Twitter under the hashtag #MakeAmazonPay, is timed to coincide with Black Friday, a key shopping day for Amazon and other retailers.

As part of the protests, Amazon employees at a company warehouse in St. Peters, Missouri, plan to stop work on Friday, according to Athena, a coalition of local and national groups pressing for worker rights at the e-commerce giant.

Labor actions are also planned at Whole Foods stores, which Amazon owns, and other locations in Bessemer, Alabama; Columbia, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Durham, North Carolina; Garner, North Carolina; Joliet, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C.

Amazon workers and activists on Friday also will rally in front of a residence owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in New York City, Athena said.

  • Black Friday: Watch out for shorter return windows and restocking fees

Black Friday: Watch out for shorter return windows and restocking fees

    [ad_1]

Shoppers may be eager to find the best deals on Black Friday, but in doing so they could overlook an area where they may get dinged: Product returns.

Six of 10 retailers are changing their returns policies this holiday season, according to a recent survey of 500 retailers by goTRG, a return management provider. Those changes generally aren’t in the consumer’s favor, with many stores shortening the returns period while adding restocking and online return fees, goTRG CEO Sender Shamiss said.

These changes may surprise some shoppers who grew used to the generous returns policies common during the pandemic, when retailers eased their guidelines to give consumers more breathing room. For instance, Kohl’s and Bloomingdale’s extended their returns windows in 2020 by an additional 30 and 90 days, respectively.

But retailers are now dealing with an overload of inventory and a slowing economy, causing some to tighten their policies. The bottom line for shoppers on Black Friday: Check the return policy before buying to avoid an unwelcome surprise, experts say.

“Now retailers are saying, ‘We’re not interested if customers are going to cause this crazy returns nightmare that we can’t afford’,” Shamiss said.

He added that retail executives are concerned about the strength of the economy “and are making sure their policies serve their businesses to the best way possible.”

    Shorter window at Amazon

Among the changes this year at big retailers: Amazon, which says customers who purchased items between October 11 and December 25 can return them through January 31, 2023. That’s a shorter window than last year, when buyers could return items bought between October 1 and December 31, 2021, through January 31, 2022.

Some retailers are now charging customers for online returns, although they won’t typically charge for items brought back to brick-and-mortar locations. That can help lower costs for the retailers, while also encouraging more people to visit a store, where they might be tempted to purchase additional items while making a return.

“The low-hanging fruit is changing the return policy,” Shamiss said. “As e-commerce matures, they are starting to claw back these extremely liberal policies that existed for returns.”

H&M, for instance, charges a U.S. return shipping fee of $5.99 that is deducted from a customer’s refund when they return an item. The store noted that the policy isn’t new, but it may start testing online return fees in some European markets as well.

Zara earlier this year started charging $3.95 for online returns, although it doesn’t tack on a fee when consumers return online purchases to a brick-and-mortar location.

“We got used to these insanely long return policies” during the pandemic, Shamiss said. “None of that exists anymore.”

Whenever I think of Amazon, the first thing that comes to mind is décor, home-organization pieces, and last-minute Halloween costumes. Recently, however, that’s changed for me. I have been seeing great fashion and beauty products ordered from Amazon all over my TikTok, and I’m amazed at how many really great products people were ordering from Amazon. It seems like I’m a little behind the curve, but I’ve seen the light and realized Amazon is not just a spot for makeup-brush holders and black cat ears. It’s actually a go-to spot for skincare, makeup, and clothing items. During my latest Amazon deep dive, I found 27 products that are so good you’d never guess I ordered them on Amazon. But there are far more safe cards in the deck — cards that can be played at the right time to avoid cat-aided doom.

Up to 10 people can play at once. Amazon reviewers rate the game 4.7 stars.

Amazon gets notice from Labour Ministry regarding layoffs in India

    [ad_1]

Tech and E-commerce giant Amazon has been sent a notice by Union Labour Ministry regarding the recent layoffs in India.

A Anjanappa, the deputy chief labour commissioner, has summoned the company regarding the Voluntary Separation Program (VSP).  Amazon’s public policy manager, Smitha Sharma, has been asked to attend a hearing on Nov 23.

After Amazon announced that the company would let go of 10,000 employees globally, Amazon’s Indian arm started sending out VSP to its employees urging them to quit voluntarily.

The VSP document shared by the company stated: “This communication is to inform you that Amazon is implementing a Voluntary Separation Program (VSP) which is temporarily available to eligible employees within Amazon’s AET organization. Pursuant to the VSP eligible employees will have the opportunity to resign voluntarily from employment in exchange for the VSP benefits described below. Application Forms to participate in the VSP must be submitted via smart forms between November 16, 2022, and no later than 6:30 am India Standard Time on November 30, 2022 (Election Period).”

Business Today has reached out to Amazon for a comment on the same. The copy will be updated with their response.

Some of the benefits provided to employees under VSP were: “A lump sum severance payment, less legally required payroll deductions, equivalent to: 22 weeks Base Pay; plus one week base salary for every six months of service (rounded to the nearest 6 months) up to a maximum benefit of twenty weeks paid severance; plus medical insurance coverage for 6 months as per Insurance Benefit policy or equivalent insurance premium amount in lieu; plus o Notice Period or Pay in lieu as per employment contract terms.”

Employee associations have been frowning upon this. NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja noted, “Amazon employees who have served for at least a year of continuous service cannot be laid-off unless served a notice three months in advance and prior permission from the appropriate government. The company needs to submit an application to the authorities along with the reasons for such layoffs. Then the appropriate government authorities will decide whether the layoffs can be permitted or not after hearing both the parties.”

  • Amazon, Amid Layoffs, Reportedly Conducting Voluntarily Buyouts

Amazon, Amid Layoffs, Reportedly Conducting Voluntarily Buyouts

    [ad_1]

Amid cuts that reportedly include some 10,000 jobs, Amazon is said to be offering some employees voluntary buyouts, or “voluntary severance.”

    Bloomberg I Getty Images

An Amazon office in Sunnyvale, California.

That’s according to CNBC, which reported on Wednesday that, per company messages, Amazon offered voluntary separation and compensation packages to some company sectors Tuesday and Wednesday.

This week, the company also conducted layoffs, Amazon has confirmed, but it did not comment on the number of employees who were let go.

“As we’ve gone through this, given the current macro-economic environment (as well as several years of rapid hiring), some teams are making adjustments, which in some cases means certain roles are no longer necessary,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel told CNN about the confirmed layoffs.

“We don’t take these decisions lightly, and we are working to support any employees who may be affected,” she added.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reports of voluntary buyouts.

Per CNBC, Amazon is offering employees a severance payment equal to three months’ wages. It includes a week of pay for every six months the employee has been at the company and a stipend paid out weekly for three months, theoretically to pay for maintaining their health insurance. Employees will have access to the company plan until the end of next month, the outlet added.

The offers give employees until November 29 to decide to leave, and they are allowed to reverse that decision until December 5. If they do take the buyout, their last day would be December 23.

Amazon’s moves this week come amid a larger labor rout in tech, which has seen historic layoffs in the past several months. Meta, for example, laid off about 11,000 employees earlier this month, the first time in its history that it conducted large-scale layoffs. Both companies faced disappointing earnings reports this year. Amazon’s stock is down 44% compared to the beginning of the year, and Meta’s is down about 67%.

When businesses need to cut expenses in a challenging economic environment, voluntary agreements like the one Amazon offered can have some positive effects, says Margaret Hermes, chief operating officer at Chicago-based fintech company Avant.

Hermes oversees areas including operations, human resources and internal communications at the company. She also has a law degree and was a senior counsel at Groupon.

“A voluntary severance program is going to enable Amazon to reduce headcount [while] simultaneously separating from people who may not have been fully on board with where Amazon is going and were already thinking of leaving,” she says.

But there are downsides. The job market is cooling — particularly in tech. Those offered buyouts might not take the company up on it, even if they want to, which makes it less likely to actually help the company out, Hermes adds.

Large-scale layoffs have become more common, at least publicly, in the battered industry. Twitter notably laid off half of its staff earlier this month after Elon Musk finalized his purchase of the company.

A lawsuit has already been filed over the process. Voluntary separations like the one Amazon is offering can actually “reduce employment legal risk,” Hermes says.

People who leave a company on their own “are less likely to make claims related to their departure,” she says.

Finally, business owners have to consider the morale of those left behind, she advises. A key part of that is conducting layoffs or separations with humanity and organization.

“If layoffs are not done in an empathetic manner companies risk harming the morale of the remaining employees [going forward],” she advises.
