    38 Years Ago, Nintendo Changed Pop Culture Forever

    At the start of the 1980s, video games were mostly relegated to coin-gobbling arcade machines, but their surging popularity prompted a Time Magazine cover story in January 1982 with a cringeworthy warning: “GRONK! FLASH! ZAP! Video Games are Blitzing the World!”

    If this sounds like Big Boomer Energy, that’s because Baby Boomers were between 20 and 40 years old at the time and represented the dominant group of consumers. Media panic about gaming addiction depicted arcades as depraved places for lowlifes. Meanwhile, an oversaturation of at-home consoles and a parade of middling games led the entire American game industry to crash in 1983.

    Nintendo pretty much single-handedly saved gaming with the NES (see on Amazon) back in 1985, and pop culture has never the same. Originally released in Japan as the Famicom (“Family Computer”), the NES is a redesign specifically tailored to western markets. Instead of a video game console, it was branded as an “Entertainment System” with a “Control Deck” that used “Game Paks.”

    A risky bet

    “It started with a phone call in 1981,” NES creator Masayuki Uemura told author and reporter Matt Alt in 2019, “President Yamauchi told me to make a video game system, one that could play games on cartridges. He always liked to call me after he’d had a few drinks, so I didn’t think much of it. I just said, ‘Sure thing, boss,’ and hung up. It wasn’t until the next morning when he came up to me, sober, and said, ‘That thing we talked about—you’re on it?’ that it hit me: He was serious.”

    Uemura, who had originally been poached from Sharp to develop light-gun technology for toys at Nintendo, then spent six months deconstructing and reverse-engineering rival consoles like the Atari 2600 and Magnavox to study the circuitry. The 8-bit Famicom he designed proved more powerful than its competitors, and the toy-like color scheme was hand-picked by a scarf that Nintendo President Yamauchi liked (the same red and white Mario wears on the cover of Super Mario Bros.). It helps that in 1984, Japanese legislators modified an act regulating entry to places like bars and casinos to include arcades out of concern that it impacted “public morals.” Younger Japanese had to resort to home consoles instead, so the Famicom came at the perfect time for it to boom.

    To capitalize on the American market, however, required a totally different approach—one that would pay off big-time.

    In a lecture at New York University in 2015, Uemura said the front-loading design of the NES was inspired by VCRs, a booming form of at-home entertainment in America at the time. The Game Pak cartridges are 5.25 x 4.75 x 0.75 inches, with a considerable amount of heft to them, and the simple, boxy grey design is nothing short of iconic. They slide into the front of the system, and then the user has to press the cartridge down so its brass-plated nickel connectors hit the cartridge slot’s connector pins. Frequent use actually wears down the pins, which can lead to a flawed connection.

    For years, gamers propagated the myth that blowing in the Game Paks to clear out dust would solve this problem, which instead exacerbated it due to the moisture in their breath. Still, sliding the paks in, pressing them down, pressing them again, pulling them out, blowing in them, and repeating the process felt like a game unto itself.

    The console’s most memorable and successful accessories was the NES Zapper, a light gun that launched alongside the console in America. “America loves guns,” Uemura said when talking about how Nintendo marketed the NES in the west. Most of us had the Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt dual cartridge and delighted in blasting ducks while that gleeful dog retrieved their bodies. For your typical millennial gamer, the Nintendo Entertainment System served as the primary gateway into a lifelong hobby that never let up. I have fond memories playing The Legend of Zelda with my grandmother. She would’ve loved Tears of the Kingdom.

    The origin of the classics

    Take one look at Nintendo’s biggest releases in the last couple years, and you can trace many of them all back to the NES: Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Fire Emblem.

    By 1990, Nintendo had seized more than 90 percent of the U.S. video game market, thanks in no small part to a rigid third-party licensing agreement that still serves as a major industry precedent. Game developers that wanted to publish games for the NES had to agree to an exclusive licensing deal that restricted them from porting games to other consoles. Nintendo also directly approved each game to ensure a certain standard of quality.

    Konami, Capcom, Taito, and Namco all participated in this and remain prominent developers even today. Castlevania fan? Thank Nintendo and the NES for that. Even Square and Enix saw great success putting Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest on the NES. Now, 20 years after the companies merged into Square Enix, both franchises are still going strong.

    Despite all its success and rapid sales over a few short years, the NES doesn’t even break the top 10 best-selling video game consoles of all time at roughly 62 million units to date — even the widely panned PlayStation Portable sold more over time — but Nintendo’s breakthrough home console remains arguably one of the most important pieces of tech ever created.

    “When console games were popularized and presented to everyone, it felt like we were all exploring a new frontier of dreams together,” Masayuki Uemura told Used Games magazine in 2000. “Although some people may occasionally have wasted their money on a bad game here or there, both creators and players were obsessed with games then. I believe there’s still wonder to be found in that older generation of games.”

    He was right. The NES Classic Edition — a dedicated emulator featuring 30 NES classics — rolled out from late 2016 into 2017 with many of the 2.3 million units selling out immediately. The 2018 relaunch saw similar demand.

    The lasting legacy of the NES, however, lies with the Nintendo Switch which has sold more than 129 million units to date. With patents for what could be the successor to the Nintendo Switch, now’s as good a time as any to remember and appreciate what the Nintendo Entertainment System did for gaming 38 years ago.

    Mario Wonder Tips for Kids of All Ages

    Don’t Be Too Goal Oriented

    You can’t help being an adult. It’s hard work, and conditions you to approach life a certain way. No judgment: Being a productive, task-oriented person is what our entire education system is based on. Once you’ve gone through school and spent a few years working you have a compulsion to get shit done the right way. Kids are different.

    If you’re playing alongside them and find yourself saying you’re “supposed” to do something—i.e. “you’re supposed to get those big purple coins!”—switch gears. SMBW is a great playground, so slow down and have fun. Seeing the game through a child’s eyes will give you a new appreciation for its incredible level design.

    Replay Fun Courses

    Sometimes a level is just a lot of fun and you can’t wait to do it again. So don’t! If your kid thinks the Hoppos are hysterical, then play the Hoppo level as long as they want. If they’re really good at the Parachute Hat Badge Challenge, let them do it again and again. The difficulty curve in SMBW will sneak up on you and can hit kids pretty hard. Nothing takes the fun out of a night of gaming faster than running into a level no one can beat. So avoid frustration at all costs. You can always come back and play more once the kids go to bed. There’s multiple save files for a reason.

    Pro Controllers Are A Wise Investment

    While it’s admirable that the Switch comes with two built-in controllers, using a single Joy-Con to play games means having to touch the smallest buttons known to man. This is especially true for parents who aren’t gaming much, or who spend their time on PC or other consoles with keyboards or adult-sized controllers. If this sounds like you, then consider investing in a Switch Pro Controller (like this one) to make life easier. Odds are you’ll like it so much, you’ll end up getting more than one.

    Mario Wonder Tips for Younger Kids

    Let Them Have The Stupid Crown

    On paper, the mechanic of having the player who gets the best score earn a little crown to wear seems cute and harmless. A silly little thing that has no bearing on the game and is essentially meaningless. Unless you are a small child. Then, suddenly and without warning, the crown will become the most important thing in your life. You will wail and despair if someone else has the crown, even if they get it by accident. So, parents, a word of warning. Let your kid get the crown. If you’re navigating siblings you may need to institute some hard rules on sharing, or wear the crown yourself in a “if you can’t play nicely you can’t play at all” situation. In the meantime let’s pray Nintendo lets us disable this feature in a future update.

    Yoshi and Nabbit Don’t Get Power-ups

    One of the things that sets Nintendo apart from Sony and Microsoft is their dedication to family-friendly gaming. This comes through in a lot of places in SMBW, but the addition of the Yoshis and Nabbit is probably the biggest accommodation they’ve made in franchise history. These characters can’t take damage, so young players (or adults) can still go through levels without feeling like they’re failing over and over.

    The caveat is that these characters can’t use power-ups. This could be very upsetting for young players (or adults) who wanted to see Elephant Yoshi. This may not be a dealbreaker but probably something you want to mention before starting a level together.

    Mario Teaches Reading

    Who says games aren’t educational? Sure, Mario may be miles away from Ms. Rachel, but don’t fool yourself into thinking SMBW is pure brain candy. There’s plenty of dialogue and text to read, full of the common sight words kids are learning in elementary school. You can also apply the same techniques that make for effective reading at home. Ask about character motivation, the sequence of events, or make connections to their lives. Your kid may never have had Boswer steal their castle, but they’ve probably experienced someone being bad at sharing.

    (NEW YORK) — Jeff Bezos is leaving Seattle, where the billionaire founded Amazon out of a garage nearly three decades ago.

    In a Thursday night Instagram post, the 59-year-old Bezos announced plans to return to Miami — where he spent his high school years — to be closer to his parents and his partner, Lauren Sánchez.

    Bezos stepped down as the CEO of Amazon, still based in Seattle, almost three years ago and said in his social media post that operations for his rocket company, Blue Origin, are “increasingly shifting” to Cape Canaveral. Miami is about 200 miles south of Cape Canaveral.

    “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me,” Bezos wrote Thursday, noting that he’s lived in Seattle longer than he’s lived anywhere else.

    Seattle has been Bezos’ home since 1994, when he started Amazon out of his garage. Thursday’s Instagram post includes a brief video tour led by Bezos of Amazon’s first, humble office, with his father behind the camera.

    “It doesn’t take long to tour the offices of Amazon-dot-com Inc,” a young Bezos says in the video, pointing to his desk, a fax machine, and a long orange extension cord that was needed to supply the room with additional power.

    Bezos, one of the wealthiest people in the world today, has lavish properties in Miami, which has already attracted some other big names in tech over recent years. Last month, Bloomberg News reported that Bezos had purchased a mansion in South Florida’s “Billionaire Bunker” for $79 million, just two months after buying a neighboring estate for $68 million.

    Both mansions are in Indian Creek, an exclusive man-made barrier island in Miami. Celebrity neighbors include Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.

    Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon in early 2021, citing the desire to devote more time to philanthropy and other projects. But Bezos still has broad influence over Amazon as executive chair and the company’s biggest shareholder.

    Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is relocating from his longtime home in Seattle to the beachside city of Miami.

    In an Instagram post on Thursday, Bezos shared the news alongside a video from the Seattle garage where he established Amazon almost 30 years ago.

    “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me,” Bezos wrote. “Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart.”

    The tech billionaire says he’s moving to be closer to his parents and the Cape Canaveral operations of Blue Origin LLC, Bezo’s space exploration company.

    Last month, Bezos purchased a seven-bedroom mansion in Miami for $79 million located next door to his other Miami mansion, a 2.8-acre home, which Bezos purchased in August for $68 million. Both homes sit in Indian Creek, a man-made barrier island in the Miami area known as the “Billionaire Bunker.”

    Along with his new Miami home — or homes? — Bezos has properties in Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, and Maui, along with a 300,000-acre ranch in Texas, which serves as the base for Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket launch site.

    As the world’s third richest person, Bezos boasts a net worth of $161 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

    Bezos’ announcement came on the same day that the FTC released a new, less-redacted lawsuit against Amazon, revealing new details about the accusations against the tech giant, including claims that Bezos “directly ordered” the advertising team to intentionally inundate its search results with irrelevant “defect” ads as a means to “drive up Amazon’s advertising profits.”

    However, Amazon has refuted the accusations.

    “The claim that Amazon leadership directed employees to accept more advertising defects that would degrade the customer experience is grossly misleading and taken out of context,” Tim Doyle, an Amazon spokesman, told Entrepreneur.

    Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is moving to the Sunshine State.   

    In a sentimental Instagram post Thursday, which included old footage of the very first Amazon office located in Bezos’ former garage in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, the billionaire said he’s moving to Miami. His reasons for relocating include a desire to be closer to his parents; his partner, Lauren Sanchez; and Cape Canaveral, where operations for his space exploration company Blue Origin “are increasingly shifting,” according to the post.

    “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me,” Bezos said in the post. “Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart.”

    Bezos established Amazon in Seattle in 1994, contributing to the city’s transformation into a vibrant technology hub. He helmed the company until 2021, at which time he stepped down as CEO to focus on other ventures, such as his aerospace company. 

    Influx of billionaires

    Bezos’ cross-country move comes months after the billionaire bought two South Florida mansions worth $79 million and $68 million, respectively, Bloomberg reported.  

    However, being close to friends and family won’t be the only perk to living in Miami for Bezos. The move could also save him loads of money on taxes. 

    Washington State, where Bezos currently lives, recently passed a 7% tax on capital gains, which could cost wealthy individuals like Bezos millions, according to the state’s Department of Revenue. Under that new tax, Bezos would owe $70 million in state taxes for every $1 billion of Amazon stock he sells, according to CNBC Wealth Reporter Robert Frank. 

    By comparison, Florida is one of nine states that does not have state income or capital gains taxes, according to Investopedia

    Several other ultra-wealthy individuals have recently made the move to Miami to take advantage of the state’s generous tax laws. Last year, Ken Griffin, the wealthiest man in Illinois, moved his family and his Chicago-based hedge fund to Miami. Hedge fund tycoons Dan Loeb and Josh Harris have also purchased palatial mansions in Miami Beach in recent years, Insider reported

    After launching Amazon from a garage in Seattle in 1994, centibilllionaire Jeff Bezos is leaving the Pacific Northwest behind and setting sail for Florida. 

    In an Instagram post, the world’s third wealthiest person—with a net worth estimated at $160 billion—said he wanted to be closer to my parents after they recently moved back to Miami. 

    “My parents have always been my biggest supporters,” he posted to his Instagram account, adding that his spacefaring company Blue Origin is increasingly shifting operations to Cape Canaveral. 

    Florida also offers a financial benefit to the Amazon founder—it doesn’t charge capital gains tax which, for a man who’s sold some $30 billion in stock since 2002, according to Bloomberg, can be quite substantial

    Feeling at home

    Even though Bezos said he’s relocating to Miami, not a whole lot will change for the owner of the Washington Post newspaper. He won’t need to scout the real estate market for a new residence, since he already reportedly bought in August a $68 million Miami mansion on the small, man-made island of Indian Creek popularly known as “Billionaires Bunker”. In October, he added his next-door neighbor’s $79 million property as well.

    But Miami is not the only place where Bezos lives. In addition to his collection of luxury cars and private Gulfstream jets, Bezos owns multiple properties valued recently at a half billion dollars.

    Washington’s historic tax

    His move may have something to do with a Washington state supreme court decision in March of this year to uphold a 7% tax on capital gains that took effect in January 2022 despite a legal challenge. 

    The ruling is considered historic since legislators in Olympia took the opposite view of the Internal Revenue Service: they classified the tax as an excise tax rather than an income tax in order to circumvent the fact that Washington state does not have an income tax under state law. A majority of voters in Seattle are now in favor of a similar capital gains tax for the city itself.

    Unlike most people, entrepreneurs and other ultra-high net worth individuals typically do not pay taxes on their personal earnings, since their wealth stems from assets rather than salaries and bonuses.

    Sometimes when products skyrocket in popularity on social media, I steer clear of them. I try to resist the urge to buy into trends just because everyone else is doing so (with a few exceptions, like Kim Kardashian’s Skims and JW Pei handbags). This was precisely the scenario with the Amazon fashion favorite Tanming Sweater Set ($40), which inundated my TikTok feed consistently in 2022. Given my work-from-home lifestyle and penchant for comfy loungewear that can transition into “real” clothing, it would have been completely rational for me to try it out last year. However, I held my ground and resisted until just recently. Now that the frenzy has subsided a bit, I felt validated in placing it in my shopping cart. And the thing is, I’ve come to the realization that I should have embraced it much earlier. Ahead, I dive into what I love about it and why you might need it, too.

    What I love about this sweater set is that it looks a hell of a lot more polished than my go-to combination of a mismatched sweatshirt and sweatpants or activewear leggings and an oversize crewneck — while feeling just as comfortable on. Its versatility ensures I can confidently wear it during work meetings without the nagging sense that I should have thrown on something nicer. The price is hard to beat, too. It’s one of my pet peeves when the top and bottom of a two-piece set have to be bought separately. The fact that both pieces together cost under $50 is a win, to say the least.

    If given the chance for a do-over with this sweater set, I’d choose the black version (it comes in eight colors). Given my tendency for spills and stains, coupled with my limited supply of beige-colored underwear (more on that shortly), choosing the black option would have been a more practical investment. However, I have no regrets about my initial purchase. The fabric strikes a perfect balance, being soft yet not overly so to tempt me into a day of couch lounging instead of productivity. Plus, it’s a compliment magnet in every sense and offers a mindlessly chic choice for my morning routine.

    One of the most important things worth noting about this sweater set is that the fabric (70 percent viscose and 30 percent nylon) isn’t super thick. In all honesty, the material is heftier than I imagined, so much so that it is not see-through in the least when I wear skin-toned undergarments. However, in my experience, I found it to be see-through when I wore it with a dark-colored bra and underwear.

    Another factor to take into account is that the brand recommends handwashing exclusively. In the reviews, several buyers who tossed it in the wash observed the waistband becoming twisted, as stated by a reviewer who “tried for over an hour” with no success in untwisting it. This is likely the reason why the brand cautions against machine-washing it, although a few shoppers have reported success despite the risk.

    Lastly, the pant length may be a point of contention. As someone who ordered a size medium (I’m 5’9″, for context), I found the pants to be a bit short. Conversely, some shorter reviewers found them too long. A five-star reviewer described them as “adorable” but “a tad long,” suggesting they fold the waist for a better fit. (The brand notes that the pants are 39.37 inches, with an inseam of 26.77 inches, in case those precise measurements may help in your decision.

    This sweater set is best for those looking for affordable coordinating loungewear staples that look put-together and feel as comfortable as sweats. Whether you’re relaxing at home or gearing up for a long flight, it strikes the perfect balance of comfort and style.

    Amazon sellers’ holiday marketing strategy ramps up on channels like Amazon PPC and Amazon SEO, taking up most available real estate. So, focusing on those two channels alone would be considered an Amazon beginner mistake.

    The good news? For most consumers, their holiday gift-buying journey begins off of Amazon, and as an Amazon Consultant for 10+ years, I’m here to share how you can capitalize on this with a proven, time-tested holiday marketing strategy.

    Step 1. Make a list of holiday gift guides

    To begin, consider that your customers will be visiting the top two search engines in the world, Google and YouTube, to help make their holiday gift-buying decisions easy.

    They will be searching for things like:

    • Jewelry gifts under $100

    • Top tech gifts for dad

    That means, your first step will be to make a list of lists.

    First, ask yourself: Who would your product be an amazing gift for? Then, think about all of the buying guides, holiday gift guides, best lists and top lists, and write them down.

    Not sure? Ask ChatGPT for help, then move on to step 2.

    Step 2. Find Amazon Influencers

    Amazon Influencers who create blog and video content link back to Amazon to earn affiliate commissions from programs like the Amazon Associates Program and Amazon Influencer Program.

    They’re the prominent creators of gift guide and buyer guide style content because they can easily link back to the products on Amazon, where the customers with buyer intent go and make a purchase after taking their recommendation, earning them a commission.

    In other words: Your goal is to perform searches on Google and YouTube for the lists in your list and make note of all of the results that link back to products on Amazon.

    Then, you’re going to collect the social media links and email addresses of the content creators, just like you would in your modern PR strategy.

    Now, you know who creates the type of content that drives sales for your Amazon holiday marketing strategy.

    Your next step is to build relationships to get included in the existing or upcoming holiday gift guide content.

    Step 3. Build relationships with Amazon Influencers

    Simply put, you don’t want to quickly send out a cold email or DM asking to get included in their gift guides. This doesn’t work.

    As a business owner, think about how many cold emails you get every day and which ones you choose to read and which you choose to skip.

    You choose to open the cold emails from people who have interacted with you before and see their names in your notifications.

    You’re going to want to follow the same process you likely use to get PR for your business.

    1. Follow the content creator on social media

    2. Engage with their content for a day or so

    3. Send them a DM or an email

    By following this process, they’re going to see your name a few times and know that you’ve taken the time to consume and engage with their content. This is what makes them willing to open up and respond to your outreach — reciprocity.

    That means you have a fantastic opportunity to get included in a piece of content that’s already ranking well on search engines and will have prominent visibility during the holidays.

    Since you cannot re-upload YouTube videos and update existing video content, your choice for YouTube content is only for upcoming videos. Many publications and bloggers choose to create new content as well.

    This gives you a bit more flexibility in terms of how you’re positioned.

    BONUS PLACEMENTS:

    Don’t stop at the article or the YouTube video inclusion. Amazon Influencers will also break up their gift guides for social media placements and email lists.

    Your goal is to maximize the real estate and opportunities to be in front of holiday shoppers when they’re making their purchasing decisions.

    With that in mind, the ultimate placement is the solo placement. This is where the entire piece of content is dedicated to your product.

    Why risk obliterating customer trust for a few dollars? That’s the high-stakes gamble that’s plaguing the business landscape as companies increasingly implement return fees. In a bid to curb a burgeoning problem of product returns, businesses have inadvertently stepped into a loyalty minefield. The trend, prevalent yet contentious, warrants scrutiny through the lens of behavioral science to grasp its long-term ramifications.

    So, here’s the conundrum: businesses are hemorrhaging money on returned goods. Happy Returns, a logistics company, released a survey that found 81% of retailers have implemented some form of return fee in the past year alone. On the surface, charging return fees seems like a logical step. It’s a move aimed at deterring frivolous returns, and according to many companies, it’s working.

    Amazon, H&M, and Zara, retail giants in their own sectors, are among many that have started charging return fees and are promoting in-store returns. Amazon levies a $1 fee for shipping returns through United Parcel Service, while H&M charges $5.99 for returns sent through the U.S. Postal Service. Zara takes $3.95 off your refund for mailed returns.

    On one hand, these fees are modest, but they are potent enough to disrupt the shopping experience. Consumers are savvy; they calculate the entire cost of shopping, including the hassle and expense of potential returns. Happy Returns also found that about a third of companies surveyed lost customers due to these new fees. According to their survey, more than 80% of consumers check a retailer’s return policy before making a purchase with a retailer for the first time and 55% of the consumer population surveyed have abandoned a shopping cart if the return policy wasn’t convenient.

    Blue Yonder, a supply-chain software provider, further substantiates this in a different survey, revealing that 59% of consumers are deterred from making a purchase if they’re faced with tighter return policies. So, while you might stop the bleeding in the short term by charging return fees, you’re creating a less hospitable shopping environment that drives customers away in the long term.

    The intricacies of cognitive biases in return fee decisions

    While financial metrics and logistics often dominate corporate decisions about return fees, cognitive biases play an underrated but influential role in this complex equation. Recognizing these biases not only sheds light on why businesses might opt for such fees but also offers insights into how these choices can adversely affect customer behavior.

    First, consider the cognitive bias of hyperbolic discounting. This bias explains our natural propensity to opt for immediate rewards over future benefits. When a business is dealing with the costly logistics of managing returns, the immediate relief provided by implementing a return fee can be overwhelmingly tempting. It’s a quick fix that shows immediate results, thereby satisfying shareholders and seemingly tightening up a leaky supply chain process. However, by focusing so intently on the here and now, companies often overlook the long-term consequence, which is the gradual erosion of customer loyalty.

    Next, let’s delve into the empathy gap. This cognitive bias refers to the difficulty of understanding and predicting the emotional states of ourselves and others in situations that are different from the present. When board members discuss implementing a return fee, they may find it challenging to fully comprehend the emotional toll such a fee takes on consumers. Often encapsulated in corporate bubbles, decision-makers may not grasp that for many consumers, the fee is not just an economic cost but an emotional one. It feels like a betrayal, a breaking of the tacit trust between consumer and brand.

    Happy Halloween! Ubisoft Netherlands invites you to celebrate the spooky festivities with AI-generated Assassin’s Creed art. Terrifying indeed!

    People first began to notice some of Ubisoft’s social media channels posting what appeared to be AI-generated versions of Assassin’s Creed art last night. A smoothed over, off-brand Ezio emerged on the French publisher’s X (formerly known as Twitter) account for Latin America. “In other amazing industry news here’s an official Ubisoft account with 300K followers posting AI art,” tweeted Forbes contributor Paul Tassi. The publisher’s post was mocked for making Ezio look like a Fortnite character and for one character in the background wielding gun grips like knives. The tweet was deleted soon after.

    Not to be outdone, however, the Ubisoft Netherlands account followed up with its own AI-looking Ezio art complete with Jack-o’-lanterns. “Which Ubisoft game is perfect for this horrible evening?” the account asked in Dutch. Clearly the one the Assassin’s Creed maker was playing with fans’ hearts.

    Ubisoft recently revealed that over 1,000 people have left the company in the last year as part of its “cost reduction” program. Some of those departures were voluntary, but others included layoffs across customer support, marketing, and other departments in Europe, the U.S., and elsewhere. “Ubisoft literally conducting layoffs this year and last month, and they’re posting AI art,” tweeted film concept artist Reid Southen. “Unbelievable. What the hell is the game industry doing right now.”

    Still, over 19,000 people continue to work at Ubisoft, including many devoted just to the Assassin’s Creed franchise and all of its sequels, spin-offs, and other incarnations currently in the pipeline. Surely one of them could have made some art for the social media accounts. Or the company could have just used one of its many existing Ezio images. Anything would have been preferable to posting ugly AI-generated crap as thousands are laid off across the video game industry this year.

    Fans have had to become increasingly vigilant in 2023 about companies trying to pass off AI-generated images in their marketing, as DALL-E 2, Midjourney, and other AI text-to-image models make it easier than ever to cobble together fake art. Amazon did it to promote its upcoming Fallout TV show. It sure seemed like Niantic did it to promote upcoming content in Pokémon Go. Legendary Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki calling AI art tools “an insult to life itself” back in 2016 has never felt so prophetic.
