Amazon is dangling a $20 credit for some customers ahead of its annual Prime Day event, scheduled this year for July 16-17. But the online retailer notes that consumers must take certain steps to claim the credit before July 13.
The $20 credit is available to Prime members who back up at least one photo with Amazon’s Photo app by a certain time (see details below).
Since Amazon debuted Prime Day in 2015, the company has leaned on the event to peddle its own products, ranging from Kindle e-readers to Fire TV, as well as services such as music streaming. This year, the company is offering the $20 credit to convince users to try its Amazon Photo app, a service that provides unlimited storage and five GB of video — more video storage costs about $12 a month.
Amazon’s sales from services, such as its cloud computing platform, now dwarfs its revenue from product sales. And the company is also facing more competition for consumers’ wallets as low-cost retailers such as Temu and Shein elbow into the U.S. market.
Who qualifies for the $20 credit?
The offer is available for Amazon Prime members who upload at least one photo through the Amazon Photos app for the first time. People who aren’t Prime members or those who have already used the Photos app are ineligible for the credit.
Amazon also said consumers with a Prime trial membership don’t qualify for the $20. Some people use the 30-day trial membership to take advantage of Prime Day before making a decision on whether to join.
How do you get the credit?
You’ll have to upload at least one photo through the Amazon Photos app before 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on July 12.
When will Amazon provide the $20 credit?
Amazon said it will send an email within four days after you upload your photo that confirms the $20 credit has been applied to your customer account. That means if you upload a photo on July 12, you’ll receive the credit by July 16 — the day that Prime Day begins.
Are there restrictions on using the $20 credit?
The $20 credit can only be used to buy products from Amazon.com or Amazon Digital Services. That means the credit can’t be used to buy products sold by third-party sellers or other Amazon divisions, even if it says the product is Prime eligible or fulfilled by Amazon.
You’ll also have to buy at least $30 worth of products to apply the $20 credit, Amazon said. Taxes, shipping and handling and gift wrapping don’t apply to the $30 minimum purchase amount, the company added.
Does the $20 credit have an expiration date?
Yes, Amazon said the credit will expire at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on July 17 — the last day of the Prime Day event.

As product experts, a large part of our job here at WIRED is to help you get the best products at the best prices. That includes helping you find great deals during massive sales events like Black Friday and, of course, Amazon Prime Day. If you’re looking to get the best price on that gadget that’s been sitting on your cart for months, it’s important to know when to pull the trigger—and when not to. Other than a handful of good early Prime Day deals, now is almost certainly the time to hold your fire.
Amazon, Walmart, and other major retailers tend to jack up pricing on all sorts of products that have long since sunk below their manufacturer’s suggested retail price ahead of a major sale. That way once you see it on the big day it looks like a really great deal—even when it would have been impossible to buy the product at the inflated price displayed even if you had tried. This isn’t a new phenomenon, and it’s not limited to online sellers. A Harvard business professor wrote a paper about the phenomenon in 2018. There have been unsuccessful class action suits against classic brick-and-mortar retailers like Kohl’s and JCPenney over the practice.
We do our best to guide you through this sale-price chicanery with our daily coverage and Prime Day posts, but we can’t do it all alone. There are plenty of ways you can prepare as a savvy buyer to get the best gear and still keep your budget intact, from timing your moves to grabbing last year’s best. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to follow now, and throughout the year, to save some serious dough.
Price Tracking Tools
If you’re focused on prices and shopping on Amazon you should be using a price tracker to keep a close eye on product price drops (and jumps). The best options are Keepa (the one I use most often) and CamelCamelCamel. Both trackers are free and work across all the top browsers. (You can read our in-depth guide for more tips to find the best Amazon deals.)
While it’s true these tools are primarily for Amazon shopping, where Amazon goes many other retailers tend to follow, often including manufacturer sites. If you’re shopping outside the Amazon universe, there are some other good price tracking tools worth checking out, including deals sites like SlickDeals, Honey, and Pricerunner.com.
While none of these tools or specialty sites is perfect, they can all be helpful in keeping you aware of what is a good deal and what isn’t.
Pick Your Moment
While price tracking is key, it’s important to know the best times of year to shop. As mentioned above, you’ll generally want to hold back on buying big-ticket items, especially tech gear, just before a major sales event like Amazon Prime Day, which this year is scheduled for July 16 and 17.
The same is generally true for other big-store events like Wayfair Day, as well as general sales based around holidays like Labor Day and Presidents Day. Not only is the product you’re after often being sold at a higher price than it would be during the big sale, it may well be jacked up to its highest price of the year.
On the other hand, Black Friday (and Cyber Monday) sales tend to work the opposite way, becoming more of a monthlong free-for-all than a one- or two-day event. We often see prices dropping across product categories for weeks before Black Friday as retailers court folks aiming to get their holiday shopping done early.
If you’re looking for TVs, soundbars, and home theater deals, you may also see a lot of sale fanfare ahead of the all-important “big game,” aka the Super Bowl. Brands and retailers figure you’ll want a solid big screen and good sound not only for the game itself but also for the halftime show, the puppy bowl, and those gazillion-dollar commercials. That said, with the Super Bowl following a slew of big shopping events, and right after new TV models are announced, these deals aren’t always what they seem.
The biggest and best of the summer sales is Amazon’s Prime Day event, which runs on July 16 and 17 this year. But you don’t necessarily need to wait to bag a bargain, because Amazon always lets a few tasty discounts slip the net to whet your appetite ahead of the main event. We have been keeping a close eye on what’s available to help you find the best early Prime Day deals worth your time and money.
With decades of experience in product testing, a host of price tracking tools at our disposal, and a long history of bringing you the best bargains, you can rely on WIRED to sift the fast-moving waters of Amazon’s river of deals to extract the gold. This Prime Day, we cut to the chase, only including deals at their best price ever (some may match previous deal prices, but we have not seen them cheaper). It’s also worth noting that many of these products will likely remain at these prices through Prime Day.

It may not be the best music streaming service, but Amazon Music Unlimited earned an honorable mention in our guide. Five months of free service for Prime members (three months for non-Prime members) will be enough to tempt some folks to try it. Amazon Music Unlimited gives you ad-free access to more than 100 million tracks in 16-bit, 44.1-kHz quality (24 bit, 192 kHz where available).
Easily the best audiobook service, Amazon’s Audible Premium Plus gives you access to a library of Audible Originals, audiobooks, and podcasts, one credit per month to use on any audiobook title you fancy, and regular exclusive deals and discounts. Prime members can have three months for free right now (one month for non-Prime members), after which it costs $15 per month. The beauty is that you get to keep titles purchased with credits, even after the subscription ends.
Deals on Amazon Tech
The discounts on Amazon’s growing stable of devices are so frequent you should never pay full price. But the deepest discounts are reserved for Prime Day events, and this year is no exception. Here are a few early Amazon device deals you can snag right now.
Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet
Photograph: Amazon; Getty Images
Our favorite Amazon Fire tablet is also the best tablet you can get for under $200, so a big discount makes it pretty irresistible. We like the large screen, decent performance, and support for Alexa with Show Mode, which enables this tablet to double up as an Echo Show smart display. On the downside, you need to pay an extra $15 to get rid of ads on the lock screen, and it won’t run Google apps without a workaround.
If you like a portable tablet in an easy-to-manage size, the Fire HD 8 is the most affordable option worth considering. It offers solid performance, hands-free Alexa, stereo sound, USB-C, and nearly 12 hours of battery life. The 8-inch screen is not as big or as good as the HD 10, but it’s fine for the money. This was already the best-value Fire tablet and has been frequently discounted, but we have never seen it this low before.
As the current top Eero mesh system available, this is the cheapest we have seen the Max 7 (7/10, WIRED Review). This Wi-Fi 7 mesh opens up the 6-GHz band, alongside the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands we are used to. Wi-Fi 7 promises dramatic improvements in speed and stability, with capable devices able to join on multiple bands simultaneously. A two-pack will easily cover most homes, Eeros are backward compatible with earlier systems, and they are our top recommendation for smart homes. That said, it is early days for Wi-Fi 7, and even with the discount, this is an expensive mesh.
Amazon Eero Pro 6E
Photograph: Eero
It’s still a bit early for most folks to consider Wi-Fi 7, but because Wi-Fi 7 systems are hitting the market, we are seeing rapidly falling prices on Wi-Fi 6E routers. The tri-band Eero Pro 6E (7/10, WIRED Recommends) is one of the best mesh systems, offering super speedy performance, 6-GHz Wi-Fi (with relatively short range), handy smart home hub functionality, and compatibility with other Eero devices. The Eero Plus subscription is pricey at $10 a month or $100 a year, but it adds tons of value with security, parental controls, VPN service, and a password manager. This is the cheapest price we have ever seen for the three-pack, enough to cover up to 6,000 square feet.
If you want some cheap security cameras for your property, this is a tempting price for a Blink Outdoor 4 and a Blink Mini 2 (7/10, WIRED Recommends). We haven’t yet tested the Outdoor 4, but the Mini 2 is one of our favorite indoor security cameras, featuring a compact design, clear 1080p footage at 30 frames per second, and two-way audio. The catch is that Blink cameras require a subscription at $10 a month or $100 a year for unlimited cameras to unlock 60-day unlimited cloud video history and on-device person detection.

LG C3 77-inch OLED TV
Photograph: LG
The LG C3 (9/10, WIRED Recommends) is a truly excellent OLED television with top-notch contrast and shadow detail, deep and natural color reproduction, good brightness and HDR punch, a reflection-resistant screen, and impressive motion handling. We think it is the best TV for gamers, but it is kind of pricey. The price has been slowly falling, but this discount on the 77-inch model makes it more tempting than ever for folks seeking a home cinema setup. There are also discounts on the 65-inch and 83-inch models.
Prime members can snag a decent discount on one of the best portable power stations for camping or road trips. EcoFlow’s River 2 Pro has a LiFeP04 battery inside, good for 768 watt-hours. It has all the ports you need to charge small gadgets, and the X-Boost surge allows you to power small appliances. You can charge it from an outlet or solar panels, though it takes more than an hour, and the fan can get noisy.
You can simply stick this power bank onto the back of your MagSafe iPhone to top off its battery. With a large capacity of 10,000 mAh, this is one of the best MagSafe power banks we have tested. It will provide at least one full charge for any MagSafe iPhone. It has a soft-touch finish, gentle curves, a USB-C port, a power button, and three LEDs on the bottom edge. This power bank is frequently discounted, but this is as low as we have seen it go.
Anker MagGo 3-in-1 Charging Station
Photograph: Simon Hill
If you need a 3-in-1 charger for your iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch, this is one of the best MagSafe chargers you can buy. It’s perfect for travel because it folds to a very compact size. It can charge your iPhone or Qi2-certified phone at up to 15 watts on a magnetic pad that can adjust to your preferred angle. A second pad charges AirPods or other wireless earbuds, and there is a fold-out Apple Watch charger. A USB-C cable (around 5-foot) and a wall adapter are included.
Clip the on-page coupon to get the maximum deal price. This affordable security camera records decent-quality footage, has a starlight sensor that offers color night vision, microSD card support that goes up to 512 GB, and an IP66 rating, meaning it can be used outdoors. It also has smart detection (people, pets, and vehicles), offers 2K resolution, supports slightly laggy two-way audio, and has the optional Tapo Care subscription for 30 days of cloud storage from $3.50 per month. The more basic Tapo C110 is the best budget camera in our Best Indoor Security Vameras guide, but with the discount, you should pick the slightly superior C120 instead.
The original Sony LinkBuds (8/10, WIRED Recommends) featured a unique hole-in-the-middle design, making it easy to hear outside sounds like approaching cars or supermarket announcements. The newer S version has the same design, but they are a touch heavier, and Sony added active noise cancellation and better battery life. These are great for folks who prefer smaller earbuds, and they come with four different tips to help you get a good fit. The original version made our Best Wireless Earbuds guide.
HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless Gaming Headset
Photograph: Eric Ravenscraft
If you hate having to charge your wireless gaming headset, the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless (10/10, WIRED Recommends) is for you. This headset can last a staggering 300 hours between charges. It also delivers rich, booming sound, comfortable ear cups, and intuitive controls. All that’s missing is a headphone jack. This headset has been discounted to around this price before but usually hovers around $170.
These teeny tiny trackers might be the best way to keep tabs on your keys or luggage if you are an iPhone owner. They are some of the best trackers around, if a little overpriced. Roughly the size of a quarter, they use Bluetooth and Apple’s special U1 location-finding chip to pinpoint locations in the Find My app.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9
Photograph: Samsung
This 11-inch AMOLED Android tablet (7/10, WIRED Recommends) is a powerful, slim slate with top-of-the-line specs, from the flagship-grade Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset to long-lasting battery life. It comes with the S Pen stylus, so you can sketch on it, and Android has improved enough that you can use it to get some light work done. Read our Best Tablets guide for more recommendations.

Hoover OnePwr Evolve Pet Elite
Photograph: Hoover
Lightweight and powerful, this cordless vacuum picked up everything from cereal to litter with one pass on its medium setting. It can also stand up on its own, which few cordless vacs can do. Hoover’s device topped our Best Cordless Vacuums guide for a while and is still there as a good midrange alternative. The battery life is a little disappointing, though you can always buy a spare to switch in. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for this vacuum.
Stylish and relatively compact, this is one of our favorite beard trimmers. It sports a digital display that shows the battery level as a percentage, boasts a long 120-minute battery life, and recharges in just one hour. WIRED contributor Andrew Williams found it excellent for sharp lines and a razor-like close shave across the neck. Philips recommends replacing the heads every four months, though you probably don’t have to. It’s not a huge discount, but we’ve only seen it slightly cheaper.
Breville the Super Q Blender
Photograph: Breville
One of our favorite blenders, Breville’s the Super Q (8/10, WIRED Recommends), combines style and power, with handy presets, and a smoothie cup. Make soup, and you can heat it to an eating temperature with just the friction of the blades. It also works well as a spice mill or for making sauces. Whatever your blending needs, the Super Q has you covered. This blender is our pick if money is no object, but this is the deepest discount we have seen. If you’re tempted, now is the time to bite.
Ceramic hot plate pioneer GHD has turned out one of our favorite hair straighteners in the Chronos. It features 1-inch plates, a power button on the inside, and one temperature option—365 degrees Fahrenheit. GHD’s HD Motion-Responsive technology delivers even heat distribution based on your styling motion. WIRED reviewer Brenda Stolyar finished in under 10 minutes and said it left her hair feeling extremely healthy, frizz-free, and super shiny. We have not seen this discounted before.
If you need a new grill for the backyard this summer, this Weber model is our favorite gas grill because of its simplicity, build quality, even cooking temperatures, and easy-to-adjust burners. There is plenty of room for all your plates and platters, with side trays, and there are handy hooks for tongs and tools. It boasts solid porcelain-coated cast-iron grill grates, making clean-up relatively easy with a little soap and water. WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson’s favorite feature is the massive turn radius of the burner knobs, which makes it easy to dial in the perfect flame.
LectroFan Classic White Noise Machine
Photograph: Martin Cizmar
Capable of generating a range of white noise or fan sounds to help you slumber, the LectroFan Classic currently tops our Best Sound Machines guide. With a compact design (4 inches across and 2 inches tall), it is small enough to fit on the most crowded nightstand. You can switch easily between white noise and fan sounds with physical buttons, there’s a 60-minute timer, and you can crank it up to 85 decibels or keep the volume low. This sound machine sees frequent discounts, but $35 is a good price.
This is our top budget chair recommendation in our Best Office Chairs guide. It dips to this price fairly often but doesn’t go lower. It has a breathable mesh fabric on the back and the seat, plus it’s sturdy and has held up for several years of use.
Belt bags are the accessory that just won’t stop trending, and this particular version from Amazon is a famous dupe for other luxe variations. The bag blends style with functionality as it features multiple pockets to hold all of your essentials, plus an adjustable shoulder strap to match. See why it’s an editor-favorite in this review of the Telena Belt Bag.
Editor Quote: “Nearly 3,000 Amazon reviewers have given it five stars, praising it for being “stylish and practical,” “high-quality,” and roomy. As one reviewer writes: “So much can fit inside of the pouch— it’s like a Mary Poppins bag and I’m always impressed with how much I can fit in it.” Customers report using it for theme park outings, hikes, travel, and in lieu of a purse.” — Lauren Mazzo, former senior editor, Fitness

It cleans in a grid pattern that takes multiple passes over the dirtier parts of your home so you get a deep clean. It can map your home using 360-degree LiDAR vision as well, so it knows where it should be headed and avoids obstacles all on its own.
Plus, when it’s full, this vacuum empties itself back at its base, where it can hold up to 60 days of detritus. Its bagless base means no pricey add-ons, either. All you have to do is empty the reservoir when it’s full.
Set a cleaning schedule, tell your vacuum to clean on command, or adjust settings with the robot’s voice control options. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant for quick setup, so it’s good to go when you’re ready to issue commands.

Apple AirPods (2nd generation): $99 (23% off)
Apple

It usually sells for $140, but right now you can buy this carry-on for just $66.

It earned a 4.5-star rating on Amazon with more than 8,500 reviews.
The ergonomic handle and seamless spinner wheels make it easy to maneuver.

Step 2: Amazon’s search should choose the right Department automatically, but if needed, you can navigate to the top of the left rail and click on a Department that fits.
Step 3: Once the page refreshes, scroll to the bottom of the left rail and choose “Amazon.com” as your Seller.
Step 4: Now you will only see “Pixel 8A” products sold directly by Amazon.com.
If you still don’t see “Amazon.com” as a seller, try hitting the“See More” button. It will bring up a dense but readable alphabetical page of sellers. If Amazon is one of those sellers, it will show up in the list. You can use CTRL+F (Command+F on Mac) to search for the word “Amazon.com.” Sometimes you’ll see “Amazon Warehouse,” but that only sells used and refurbished items.
Avoid Fake Discounts
When people see that a product they like is on sale, a little wave of excitement washes over them. Instead of thinking about how much we’re spending, we start to think about how much we’re saving. Coupons and discounts exist because they create a sense of urgency that causes many people to buy things they normally wouldn’t. Some sellers abuse that pricing power. There are a lot of products on Amazon that are endlessly on “sale” and that makes it hard to know if you’re getting an actual bargain.
Luckily, there’s an easy way to check. Just copy the URL and paste it into CamelCamelCamel. You’ll get a page with a graph on it showing every price fluctuation in the past year. A lot of products have deceptive sale prices like this, to varying degrees. Knowing what the actual going rate is for a product puts you in charge.
Alternatively, the Keepa extension for Chrome will add a similar box right into Amazon.com pages for you, though it does try and get you to register for free, and it might slow your browsing down.
Photograph: Louryn Strampe
Tools like Keepa and CamelCamelCamel may also help you determine the best time to buy an item. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K Max, for instance, consistently fluctuates between its normal $60 price down to $40, like it is now. And that all-time-low includes special sales like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, meaning you (probably) don’t need to wait to score a good deal. The tools can help you spot similar trends in other products, like televisions, which tend to get a lot cheaper when Christmas draws near.
Don’t Trust Every Review
Amazon’s 5-star review system is supposed to make choosing products simpler, but it’s easily gamed. If you’re looking at an expensive product from a company you’ve never heard of, or if there are hundreds or thousands of very positive reviews, do a little sleuthing. Many sellers try to manipulate reviews to get their products listed more prominently on Amazon.
Fakespot is an excellent tool to help you spot deceptive reviews. Just plug in an Amazon URL and it’ll give you a report. It isn’t a flawless tool, but it will give you a hint at whether a lot of reviews are fake or suspicious, and it spits out an AI-generated summary to try and help you parse the information further. We’ve got more advice on detecting fake Amazon reviews here.
Prime Video is also included with your membership. There are some killer originals, like Fallout and The Boys in addition to other movies and shows. Purchased separately, Prime Video costs $9 per month. Note that these plans are with commercials. If you’re a Prime member and you want to go ad-free, it’ll cost another $3 per month.
Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about Amazon’s members-only event, Prime Day. The annual “holiday” has outperformed both Black Friday and Cyber Monday in years past, but not every Prime Day deal is actually a bargain. The WIRED Gear team always covers the event to make good deals easier to find—our coverage is unique in that we only write about deals on products we have personally tested and can verify are great buys rather than flooding our posts with questionable random brands. This year, Prime Day is in July. Official dates have not yet been announced, though we anticipate the sale will fall on a Tuesday and Wednesday in the middle of the month. Early Prime Day deals are usually available in the days leading up to the sale, and we’ll have the best for you here.
Amazon Day
Overwhelmed by the sheer number of boxes at your door? (Honestly, as a product reviewer, same.) Amazon Day lets you schedule all of your deliveries to arrive on a certain day of the week. Rather than dealing with a box or two at a time on multiple days, you can get one package with all of your orders on whichever day you prefer. If you use Amazon Day, you aren’t locked in. That means if you’re ordering something you need quickly, you can still opt for the fastest shipping method. Amazon Day is a good way to cut back on cardboard (and your carbon footprint).
Exclusive Deals
Even outside of Prime Day, Amazon Prime members are eligible for special members-only discounts. That might mean a few bucks off your portable charger purchase, a 20 percent off coupon to use on dog food, or better prices on new Amazon devices. Individual discounts vary, but we see these sorts of promotions pretty frequently—and, as with Prime Day, not all of them are good.
Early-Access Lightning Deals
Both during and outside of special events like Prime Day and Black Friday, Prime members get early access to select Lightning Deals. You will be able to shop 30 minutes before other customers. Whether Lightning Deals are worth your money is another discussion entirely, but it’s a perk worth checking out.
No-Rush Rewards
If you don’t need your order to arrive right away, sometimes at checkout you’ll see the option for free No-Rush Shipping. Usually, choosing No-Rush Shipping gets you a free $1 digital credit to use on things like ebooks, digital games, movies, and the like. The rewards sometimes expire after a certain duration. I’ve used No-Rush credits to get as much as $10 off digital games on release day. Since video game discounts are rare, especially right after release, this can be lucrative if you time it correctly (and don’t mind waiting for your purchases to arrive).
Grubhub+
Amazon Prime members get free access to Grubhub+, which includes free delivery on orders over $12, plus an assortment of Prime-exclusive discounts at various restaurants throughout the year.
Amazon Fresh
Amazon Fresh lets you order groceries via Amazon and get them delivered to your door. It’s not available in all areas, but it is a different way to shop if you’re trying to avoid in-person trips. You also get a selection of products from Whole Foods available through Amazon Fresh. Somewhat confusingly, there are similarly named physical Amazon Fresh grocery stores in some cities.
Since Amazon bought Whole Foods several years back, you can usually find picks from Whole Foods store brands within Amazon’s grocery services. It might make a good way to try something new or stock up on items you already like.
Amazon Household
For families, Amazon Household is a good way to share benefits between multiple people. You can share membership perks with two adults, four teens, and four adults. Parents can use Amazon Household to approve teens’ orders or set up parental controls on kids’ content.
Amazon First Reads
Each month, Prime members can check out Amazon First Reads. That’s two Kindle books from the selection for free. Non-Prime members can get their two books for $2 apiece. As a reminder, you can read Kindle books even if you don’t have a Kindle device, thanks to the free app available for phones and computers. We also have a buying guide to help you pick the right Kindle.
Prime Reading
In addition to First Reads, Prime members get access to tons of Kindle books via Prime Reading. There are more than a thousand items to choose from. Aside from books, you can access audiobooks and magazines, plus comics via Comixology. WIRED senior editor Michael Calore mentioned Prime Reading as one of his quarantine lifesavers in this Gadget Lab podcast episode.
Prime Gaming
Every month, Prime members are eligible for various rewards via Prime Gaming (formerly known as Twitch Prime). This includes in-game loot in a variety of popular games, free game downloads, free downloadable content (DLC) and expansions, and more. You also get a free Twitch subscription—which sounds like you can watch Twitch for free, but “Twitch subs” are actually subscriptions to individual Twitch streamers, and they normally cost money. With the free subscription you get from Amazon Prime, you can support channels you enjoy—creators make some money off the subscription, but it won’t cost you anything extra.
$10 off Game Preorders
This discount used to be much better, but it’s still worth looking into if you are in the market for a new video game. Occasionally, Prime members can receive $10 off when they preorder a game. Eligible titles show up here when they’re available. Some video games also have free Release Date Delivery—just look for that shipping option when preordering a game.
Prime Try Before You Buy
Buying clothes online can be an arduous process. Prime Try Before You Buy (formerly Prime Wardrobe) offers a selection of items you can try on at home before committing. Pick out what you want and you’ll get it for a week. If it’s a winner, you can keep it. If it’s not a perfect fit, you can return the items for free. I prefer to use this method when pieces are already discounted, since the price you’ll pay if you decide to keep something is whatever the price was at checkout.
Unlimited Online Photo Storage
Prime members get access to unlimited full-resolution photo storage, and 5 gigabytes of video storage as well. You can store, print, and share photos using the Amazon Photos app and back everything up to the cloud. If your account ever loses Prime status, you’ll need to pay at least $2 per month to keep storing your photos and videos, so this shouldn’t be your primary backup method. You might want to consider using one of these options as well.
Discounted Amazon Kids+
Amazon Kids+ (formerly FreeTime Unlimited) is Amazon’s content service for kids. The service is compatible with several iOS, Android, and Amazon devices, like Fire Tablets. It essentially provides a bevy of parental controls whilst giving kiddos access to age-appropriate shows, books, games, and the like. Kids+ costs $8 per month, but Prime members can snag the subscription for $6 per month (or $79 and $48 per year, respectively).
Additional Perks for Specific Customers
Expecting a new addition to your family? Select Prime members can claim a free Baby Registry Welcome Box by creating a registry that has at least $10 worth of purchases (by themselves or others). Learn more here.
Select wireless carriers have special cell phone plans for Prime members. Members also get 10 percent back as a credit each month. These plans aren’t for everyone—and your current provider may be cheaper—but they could be a good option for those seeking prepaid, inexpensive phone service.
Amazon Prime Day is arguably one of the most confusing shopping holidays in existence. It’s not even a “day”—the members-only event spans 48 hours. Amazon also promises “millions of deals,” but the displayed discounts are often misleading—or outright false. Some deals are actually available to people who don’t subscribe to Prime. Add in the frenzy of limited-time Lightning Deals and you’ve got a recipe perfect for spending too much money.
Fear not! We’re here to help. WIRED’s Gear team is familiar with common shopping pitfalls, and I’ve been a deals writer for nearly a decade. What time do sales start and end? How do you tell whether a deal is actually a deal? We pooled our collective knowledge to get you prepared for Amazon Prime Day.
Updated June 2024: We’ve updated this story with additional details about Prime Day, which is set for sometime in July 2024.

When Is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon has officially announced that Prime Day will be held in July. We believe, based on past sales, that Prime Day 2024 will take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday sometime in the middle of the month.
When Do Prime Day Deals Start?
The event officially begins at 3 am Eastern time and runs for 48 hours. WIRED will cover the best Prime Day deals from both Amazon and retailers that have competing sales. Some deals and sales will begin ahead of the official start time. (We’ll be covering those too.)
Are Prime Day Deals Only for Prime Members?
Officially, yes. You must be an Amazon Prime member to shop for Amazon’s Prime Day deals. There is a free 30-day trial available for new accounts. (Prime membership comes with a lot of perks, and we’ve rounded up all of them here.) The trial will let you get in on the sale—just remember to cancel your membership to avoid any subsequent renewal charges.
There are some discounts available if you’re not a subscriber (those deals might not be that great). But other major retailers like Best Buy and Target usually hold concurrent sales during Prime-exclusive sales events. Their prices are often close to what Amazon is offering on the same products, and sometimes they match the price. This is a good way to take part in the Prime Day Sale if you don’t want to support Amazon.
Walmart is launching a rival Walmart+ Plus Week sales event for members, running June 17–23, 2024. Like Amazon Prime, Walmart+ gives you free express delivery and some other perks, but costs just $98 per year. The deals include 20 cents off a gallon of gas at Exxon & Mobil stations nationwide, so you could pay off your entire annual Walmart+ membership by buying just 490 gallons of gas!
Is Prime Day Worth It?
It depends. For some items, Prime member-exclusive event prices tend to be some of the lowest we see all year. That’s especially true for Amazon hardware, like Kindles, Fire Tablets, Fire TV Sticks, and Echo devices, but there are other factors to consider. Prices fluctuate throughout the year, and some products are discounted quite often. Even if the price is good, a deal on a product that goes on sale all the time diminishes the overall quality of that deal.
The sheer volume of deals promoted by Amazon during sales like Prime Day is a blessing and a curse. The truly good discounts can be difficult to pinpoint—there’s so much stuff on sale that the overall selection can feel overwhelming. But there’s a good chance that the item you want will be on sale. We’ve seen some fantastic Prime-exclusive discounts in the past, ranging from dirt-cheap Kindles to elusive price drops on the Nintendo Switch. The tricky part is to find the diamonds in the rough.
WIRED covers legitimately good deals all year long, including during the Prime Day event. Our tips below will help you find those great discounts on your own.
How Do I Know Whether a Deal Is Good?
ABC: Always be checking (prices, that is). Researching an item’s price is the most important aspect of determining the quality of a discount. Don’t fall prey to deceptive marketing language and inflated MSRP prices—our tips only take a few moments. The easiest step is to take a second to Google the items you’re considering so you can see the price across multiple stores.
One tool we like to use is Camelcamelcamel, which tracks Amazon’s prices over time. Paste the Amazon link or ASIN (found in the Product Information section on the Amazon product page) into Camelcamelcamel’s search bar and you’ll be able to see an item’s lowest recorded price, its average price, and how frequently the price fluctuates. Some deals, such as Lightning Deals, are excluded from the pricing history, but it’s useful to see what an item has sold for in the past. We also like Keepa, which has an extension (available for multiple browsers) that shows the recent price history for products directly on the Amazon page so you don’t have to open a new tab.
Not all cookware is created equal. Anyone who has purchased a cheap starter set of pots and pans will know—after a few years (sometimes months), the nonstick coating flakes off, the handles loosen, or the entire surface becomes warped and uneven. Buying cheap gear only to replace it is a waste of time and money. It may be some of the most expensive kitchenware you can buy, but All-Clad comes highlyrecommended by WIRED reviewers and culinary experts. They’re spendy, but these pots and pans are reliable and practically last forever. Like, forever forever.
So how do you snag this coveted cookware at stomachable prices? One surefire way to save money on All-Clad is by shopping its Factory Seconds sale, which comes around every few months. We go into more detail and list our favorite discounts below. The current Factory Seconds sale is live now and ends on May 28 at 11:59 pm ET.
Special offer for Gear readers:Get WIRED for just $5 ($25 off). This includes unlimited access toWIRED.com, full Gear coverage, and subscriber-only newsletters. Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.

What Are Factory Seconds?
The Factory Seconds Sale is run by Home and Cook Sales, an authorized reseller for All-Clad and several other cookware brands. The items featured in the sale (usually) have minor imperfections, like a scuff on the pan, a misaligned name stamp, or merely a dented box. Every product on the website lists details about the imperfection. You’ll need to enter an email address to access the sale.
While the blemishes may vary, the merchant says all of the cookware will perform as intended. Should any issue arise, nearly every All-Clad Factory Seconds product is backed by All-Clad’s limited lifetime warranty. (Electric items have a slightly different warranty; check individual product pages for details.) We’ve used a dozen Factory Seconds pots and pans, and they’ve all worked exactly as advertised. Just remember that all sales are final.
The Essential is one of our favorite pans. It’s, ahem, essential in the kitchen. We like that it works well for all kinds of tasks. Its high walls prevent grease from splattering on your countertop, and it can double as a flat-bottomed wok or even be a Dutch oven substitute. It’s also dishwasher safe.
If you tend to splash your sautéed vegetables out of the frying pan, a deeper sauté pan is just what you need. It’s got a large base to cook in, but tall sides to keep your ingredients inside the pan and off your stove. Plus, the sides are flat, so you can use them for leverage if you’re flipping something with a spatula.
Everyone needs a good, large, stainless steel frying pan. It’s not nonstick, which does take some getting used to—make sure your grease or oil is hot before you add food—but once you get the hang of cooking on stainless you’ll never want nonstick again. Good quality stainless provides an even heat, with fewer hot spots, and makes cooking easier once you master it.

All-Clad’s melding of copper, aluminum, and 18/10 stick-resistant stainless makes for one of the best heat-conducting pans WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson has used (aside from cast iron). He uses a smaller version for sauces, boiling potatoes, making bourbon-bacon bark, and countless other tasks. This is a kitchen workhorse. The included lid reduces evaporation (if you wish).
This basket is awesome for grilling items like asparagus or fruit. The bottom has perforations to allow smoky, charcoal-y goodness to flavor your food, without the danger of losing items down the grate as they cook.

These little oval-shaped dishes are great for portioning out side dishes or individual servings, but if you’re like me and you don’t own a microwave, they’re also fantastic for heating up leftovers on the stove or in the oven.
A stockpot is a niche item, but sometimes you just need a gigantic cooking vessel. This is designed for that purpose. It includes a steamer basket and a colander, so you can prepare multiple ingredients at the same time. Pro tip: If you ever want to make a seafood boil at home, this pot is basically perfect.
If you are in the market for a stockpot, this eight-quart vessel will be right up your alley. It’s got melding of copper, aluminum, and 18/10 stick-resistant stainless we love as a part of the D5 collection, and you’ll want great heat conduction with how much cooking volume it has.

These measuring cups are super durable. Your grandkids’ grandkids could probably get some use out of them. I like that they’re deep. When I’m pouring out a quarter-cup of oil for a recipe, I don’t have to worry about keeping my hand steady as much as I do with shallower, wider measuring cups.
Since shipping costs $10, these wouldn’t be a great deal on their own, but they could make a solid add-on if you’re placing a larger order. It’s hard to say a lot about potholders. They either work or they don’t. These do, and they’re easy to clean.
All-Clad makes great utensils. Cooking utensils are a strange category—the bad ones usually work fine, but you end up needing to replace them sooner. All-Clad utensils hold up over time. This set would make a good Father’s Day gift or addition to your camping gear. It includes tongs, a fork, a spatula, and a basting brush, plus a nifty, durable carrying case to pack them all up. If you don’t care about the carrying case, you can get just the tools for $50 instead.
“From house to car to airport to plane and then through the city, this nifty little case didn’t once feel uncomfortable to manoeuvre. It features a one-button handle collapser which was arguably my favourite feature, because it meant that I didn’t have to struggle getting it onto the security belt, into or out of the taxi at the other end. On the same note, the four multi-directional wheels were a dream. They never once got caught which meant a brisk stroll was easily achievable.
“There’s nothing more embarrassing than turning up for your holiday with a suitcase that’s clearly several years old, battered and bruised. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever experience that feeling again though with the Stamford cabin. It came home unscathed bar a couple of scuffs (which are only visible because of its pink hue), and I have no doubt it’ll stay that way for as long as I continue to use it. It also features a USB charging port, though you will need to provide your own battery, and the TSA fixed combination lock sits on the top of the bag instead of on the side – so you can easily access things without having to lay it down.
“Overall, this case is spot on for city breaks or long weekend getaways where a holdall won’t suffice. I will 100% be using it again, and my partner is already sharking after one too.”
The assignment: I took my Antler Clifton away on my first beach holiday of 2023, to Barbados. I was there for five days, but my first experience of 30+ degree heat this side of the new year meant I had a *major* desire to overpack. I needed choice; I needed options and I needed space. My Antler needed to serve me well.
Pictured: GLAMOUR’s Sophie Cockett with the Stamford medium case in Black.
The verdict:
“I am *such* a fan of Antler luggage, not least because the act of having a cabin suitcase which matches your hold suitcase and weekend bag is such a luxury.
“My suitcase arrived wrapped in a sleek, grey dust bag which was such a nice touch – and my first impression upon lifting it out of the box was how lightweight it was. The large Stamford weighs just over 5kg when unfilled, which isn’t very much given the quality.
“Packing was a breeze: the extender added 5cm of space which meant I could overpack to my heart’s content, and in addition to the packing straps and zipped compartment, I found the suitcase divider a helpful feature. It meant my clothes remained flat for the duration of my travels, and creasing wasn’t too much of an issue.
“At the airport, the TSA-approved combination lock meant I could send my suitcase away without a worry, and the 360-degree rotation wheels made speeding through customs *so* easy. I was surprised by how quietly the wheels glided along the ground.
“All-in-all, my Antler Stamford was perfectly suited to a long-haul beach holiday and I can’t wait to use it again later in the year. My only disappointment was the fact that the black polycarbonate shell scratched fairly easily, so after being thrown around on luggage carousels, my case was subject to a few white marks. I’d maybe opt for a lighter colour next time so that scratches aren’t so visible.”
The assignment: Headed to Puglia for a week with my boyfriend, I needed a bag big enough to fit both mine and his clothes as we only paid for one in-hold suitcase. I’m an over-packer to begin with, let alone when the weather forecast is looking mixed, requiring me to prepare for both a sunny and rainy holiday. Also, with a walk from the car port to our Airbnb in Puglia, I’d need a suitcase that’s capable of taking on a large chunk of cobbled roads. Good luck, Antler.
To put it in context, across all of the best Amazon Prime Day beauty deals, it’s generally the ghd deals that offer some of the biggest savings the retailer has to offer. Sure, the likes of Remington and BaByliss serve up discounts, too, but since their products are slightly more affordable at full-price, the overall saving isn’t quite as large. Trust us when we say ghd is unmatched. And that’s great for us, since the brand still reigns supreme as the market leader in hair styling tools. Loved by beauty editors, hair stylists and influencers alike, ghd have won over 300(!) industry awards in their time for styling tools that serve up glass hair, beachy waves, curls and tight ringlets in no time at all.
There are sooo many ghd products on sale that you’re guaranteed to find something that suits your budget and hair type. Think: the ghd Air Hair Dryer for 26% off and the ghd Rise Volumising Hot Brush for 22% off. ghd Unplugged Cordless Hair Styler in White
Why we love it: I thought I didn’t need a flatiron, but it turns out I definitely do, and the GHD is perfect for styling straight hair. It comes in a travel-friendly compact design made for tossing in a gym bag or suitcase but has all the power of a regular-size GHD flatiron. At first, I was put off by the battery life — just 20 minutes of continuous use? But I realised that the allotted 20 minutes actually kept me from spending too much time styling and in a way protected me from heat damage. It can be so tempting to straighten the same section over and over again — but all it takes is one pass for my hair to look shiny, straight, and most important, healthy with the GHD Unplugged.
For people with naturally straight hair who want to amp up a glass hair look or refresh some limp curls, though, it’s the perfect way to style without overpowering your straight strands. It smooths out hair, without leaving them too straight or frying ends, thanks to the safer-for-hair 365°F temperature.
This Amazon’s Choice hair dryer is 36% off
Why we love it: There’s a reason why this lightweight hair dryer is one of ghd’s bestselling products. It uses precision airflow to give you more volume and a smoother result for a salon-worthy finish. Plus, did we mention that it has a comfortable ergonomic design and even promises to cut down on drying times by 30%?
Quick and easy styling for long and thick hair
ghd Max Professional Wide Plate Styler
Why we love it: If you have thick or curly hair, then you know the struggle of finding a hair styler that’s right for you. Luckily, this styler features 70% larger ceramic plates and dual-zone technology to maintain the optimal temperature needed to cut down on styling time by half. A perfect 10/10.
Say goodbye to untamed frizz
Why we love it: This hot hair brush tames and smooths dry hair, making for quick and effortless styling – without needing to be handy with a hair dryer. A 185 degree optimal styling temperature also minimises hair damage and hair breakage, while dual length bristles and ionic tech leave hair extra glossy.
You can never go wrong with a classic
ghd Original Professional Styler
Why we love it: This ghd product is sooo much more than just a hair straightener. It has a sleek, rounded design and curved edges that work together to help you easily create any ‘do you can think of, from a classic straight look to soft curls and subtle waves. Plus, the gold-and-black design is a solid choice too.
A smooth, salon-style finish for over 25% off
Why we love it: Our favourite ghd hair dryer is the best value for money and ergonomically designed to suit right and left-handers alike. Thanks to its high-pressure air flow, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a tool that dries hair as quickly as this and the cool shot button allows you to lock your finished style in place.
26% off for ghd’s smartest hair styler
ghd Platinum+ Professional Styler
Why we love it: The ghd Platinum+ styler uses predictive heat technology which adapts to the specific thickness and density of the section of hair you’re working on, which results in lesser heat damage. How? The ceramic plates use high-tech sensors that monitor the heat of your straighteners 250 times a second, so micro-adjustments can be made to the temperature of the high-gloss plates. This is a feature that most other ghd product don’t have, so if you’re struggling to decide, you may become swayed by the Platinum+. Especially when it’s reduced in price.
This volumising hot brush is 22% off, thanks to Prime Day sales
ghd Rise Volumising Hot Brush
Why we love it: Designed to create double the volume of your air dried hair, the ghd Rise uses the same ultra-zone technology (and consistent heat distribution) as the brand’s curling irons for a salon quality finish. It uses ‘smooth touch’ bristles to style hair right from the root, and the results last for days. It’s particularly great for smoothing curly roots.
This nourishing styling oil is 20% off
ghd Sleek Talker Wet To Sleek Styling Oil
Why we love it: Formulated with argan oil, this styling product from ghd is designed to smoothen and protect your hair for up to 72 hours at a time. The best part is that it has a non-greasy and lightweight formula that provides professional-looking results in the comfort of your own home.
One of the best heat protectants is now just £15
ghd Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray
Why we love it: This heat styling spray contains polymers and conditioning agents, which work in tandem to coat every strand of hair and make it smoother than ever. Suitable regardless of what style you’re going for – and yes, that including both curls and waves.
Today! Right. This. Second. Amazon Prime Day – or Amazon Prime Big Deals Day, as it’s otherwise referred to – started at 00:00 on Tuesday 10 October, and will wrap up at 23:59 on Wednesday 11 October. This is the second Amazon Prime Day the retail giant has run this year – there was another on 11th and 12th July 2023 – and last year, it fell on 12th and 13th July. With the Prime Early Access sale taking place in the autumn, no less.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Amazon Prime Day is the retailer’s flagship shopping event and their biggest sale event of the year. It was founded as a one-day celebration of Amazon’s 20th anniversary back in 2015, and it lasts for 48-hours (with plenty of early Amazon Prime Day deals dropping as a warm-up event).
On par with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, some might say. And Amazon Prime members can also get next-day delivery as well as access to some Prime exclusive deals from notable brands such as ghd, L’Oreal, Shark and more.

Skincare aside, we’ve also included quite a few K-beauty makeup bits too, whether it’s a rosy eyeshadow palette or a hydrating lip tint.
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
And although K-beauty products are known to be pretty affordable — COSRX, we’re looking at you — an extra discount will only sweeten the purchase, giving you one more excuse to finally act on your Amazon beauty wishlist.
That being said, make sure to keep in mind that the Amazon Prime Big Deals Days sales event is only going to be around until tomorrow 23:59 (October 11th), so don’t wait around until last minute to do your long-awaited K-beauty haul.
Korean skincare has always been that girl. Whether you now consider double-cleansing as a staple in your routine or swear by hydrating, cast-free Korean sunscreens for face, there’s so much to thank K-beauty for — and Amazon Prime Day presents us with a perfect opportunity to discover something new or restock our favs.
Not to mention, Saturday Skin’s Hydrating Foam Cleanser is another skincare buy worth considering, which will leave your skin feeling balanced and soft. And as far as SPF products go, Korean sunscreens are in a league of their own. The Melixir Airfit SPF50 Sunscreen, for one, features a weightless formula that protects the skin without leaving an inkling of greasy white cast.
Melixir Vegan Airfit Sunscreen SPF 50
Toner pads are another hot item in Korean skincare and Medicube offers an intensely hydrating formula that also gently sweeps away dead skin cells. It’s also spiked with willow bark extract (a.k.a. salicylic acid or BHA) and citric acid (AHA) to resurface your skin.
Medicube Zero Pore Pads 2.0
Saturday Skin Rise + Shine Gentle Cleanser
Korean skincare is also all about the naturally-derived ingredients that truly soothe and repair your skin’s moisture barrier, whether it’s licorice, heartleaf, ginseng, mugwort, rice bran, or green tea. These ingredients are spaced out throughout the entire routine — from toners to moisturisers and mask treatments, as evident by the following goodies:

After waking up earlier this week and feeling chillier than usual on my morning coffee run, I can confirm we’re officially in the swing of fall. Thanks to Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, I’ve been feverishly adding cozy knits, chic cardigans, and luxe-looking sweaters to my cart without much guilt. With nearly all of the best sweaters coming in well under $50, you can rest assured that you’re not spending a small fortune to look on-trend this fall. Gearing up for some winter sun? The best Amazon Prime Day luggage deals may not have been the focal point of your shopping agenda initially this October, but since holiday season isn’t limited to one time of year, we’re well in favour of a suitcase upgrade. So what better a time to give your packing set-up a makeover than the Amazon Big Deals Day sale?
From luxe brands like Antler and Samsonite to the more accessibly-priced TravelPro and Coolife, Amazon are treating us to some of their best Prime Day reductions yet. Remember, though, the shopping extravaganza ends tonight at 23:59 (October 11th) so we wouldn’t wait around.
As discerning travellers, we’re in the market for either a three-piece set from a heavily discounted luggage brand, or perhaps one single piece from a more premium carry-on luggage brand (ahem, American Tourister). See, for instance, the Soundbox Spinner model: it’s reduced by 21% and offers buyers a durable hardshell makeup, double spinner wheels and a TSA lock. Elsewhere, the Coolife spinner luggage trio has certainly piqued our interests, not least of all because its design appears an affordable rival to our favourite high-end brand, Brics.
Whatever your shopping interests this Prime Day sale, be it a weekender bag or duffle, a travel backpack or extra large checked bag, Amazon are sure to have a Prime member reduction on just what you’re after. So, without further ado, we present the best Amazon Prime Day luggage deals in the October Amazon Prime Day Sale (AKA Prime Big Deal Days) – and we’ll be adding more deals as they drop.
The best Amazon Prime Day luggage deals, by discount:
Confession: I’ve never understood the appeal of shopping for clothing on Amazon. I know that most people find ecstatic joy in stumbling upon affordable dupes from the retailer or can’t fathom living without ultra-fast shipping. But for me, it didn’t really ever fully speak to me… until recently. With inflation high and winter coming, it’s more necessary than ever to try to save a bit more money where you can. For some, that means not buying into every single trend or investing in quality staples. But there is another way to still shop for a new season without spending all your money—ahem, Amazon.
As much as my former self would hate to admit it, Amazon does have items that look designer if you don’t mind digging for them. If you’re not one to spend hours scrolling through pages searching for the best sale finds or you generally hold harsh feelings toward the retailer, don’t fret. Ahead, I’ve taken the liberty of rounding up the 40 best fashion finds on Amazon, all under $150. Some of the picks included have been discounted for the retailer’s Prime Big Deal Days event, while others are just too good to pass up. Either way, these luxe-looking items will prove to the skeptics and the fans that Amazon does pop off from time to time.
When it comes to shopping on Amazon, “elevated” is not usually a word that comes to mind, but my many deep dives on the popular site have made the opposite quite clear. With some time, patience, and dedication, combing through the endless options has proved to be quite fruitful time and again. It helps that being a professional shopper is my job, of course. With Amazon Prime Big Deal Days now here, what better time to round up some of the most affordable yet elevated pieces?
For this story, I decided to hone in on elevated shoes and basics, in particular, after coming across many during my recent perusal of Amazon’s latest deals. I kept fall outfits top of mind in my selection, including a plethora of chic sweaters, cool denim, standout boots, and timeless outerwear among other lovely options. Scroll on to check out all 30 of my top elevated picks from Amazon—they’re all under $100.

To find the items in which you’re most interested, use the filters on Amazon’s website to search for products by brand or price. Begin by clicking on “Prime Big Day Deals” on the site menu below the search box. From there, scroll down until you see a menu on the left of the screen that lists “Departments” you can click on to narrow your search. You filter for items based on product categories such as “Baby clothing,””Electronics,” and “Home and kitchen,” as well as price range and discount size, such as “50% off or more.”
If you spot a product you’re interested in buying that has a red “Invite-only Deal” label, click the yellow “request invitation” button on the right of the page to sign up to receive a purchase link when the deal becomes available. Signing up won’t guarantee you’ll be able to purchase an item on sale however, as only a limited number of products are available.
Finally, to ensure you don’t miss any sales on specific items, set up deal notifications on your Amazon Alexa or other home assistant, or on the Amazon app.
