    For many years, I recommended Asus mesh systems, like the XT8 (also on sale right now), because they perform well, include free security and parental controls, and allow for deep configuration. The XT8 is still my pick of Wi-Fi 6 mesh systems, but Asus has failed to impress with Wi-Fi 7, releasing mesh routers with flaky firmware. They are slowly improving, but in the meantime, Netgear stepped into the breach with excellent Wi-Fi 7 systems.

    Netgear’s premium pricing used to put me off, but it has started to offer more affordable mesh routers, and the Orbi 770 Series is the sweet spot in the lineup for most folks. Refreshingly easy and impressively stable, this tri-band mesh offers three bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) as a unified network that’s available for devices and as backhaul (traffic between the main router and satellites). You can expect very fast speeds at short range but also wide coverage for more than 100 devices.

    A 2-pack of the Netgear Orbi 770 Series will likely be enough for most homes, and easily delivered in my modern 1,600-square-foot house, extending a strong Wi-Fi signal into my backyard. However, after moving into an old Victorian house with thick walls, I had to switch up to three. Luckily, the 3-pack is also on sale.

    Handling four simultaneous movie streams and online gaming sessions with apparent ease, the Netgear Orbi 770 is easy to recommend. The accessible app shows connected devices, allows you to set up a guest network or IoT network, and offers a handful of analytical tools. The main router has a 2.5 Gbps WAN and three 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, while the satellites make do with two 2.5 Gbps LAN ports apiece.

    The subscriptions are a bit of a catch with this system. Netgear Armor is feature-packed security software that includes Bitdefender Security and VPN service, but it’s only free for 30 days, then $40 for the first year, and $100 a year after. Basic parental controls are free, but to set limits, track website and app usage, apply age-appropriate filters, and set bedtimes, you must subscribe to Smart Parental Controls for $8 a month or $70 a year after the 30-day trial. You can live without these, but they’re nice to have.

    While a cheaper Wi-Fi 6 mesh will still serve most homes well, snagging the Orbi 770 enables you to tick off Wi-Fi worries for the next few years. It is a supremely slick, set-and-forget mesh that’s robust, reliable, and rangey. And this Prime Day deal is the cheapest I’ve seen this system so far.

  • One of our favorite slim Anker MagSafe power banks is down to a record low for Prime Day

    Carrying around charging cables, adapters or even a bulky power bank defeats the purpose of traveling light. But now there are plenty of options for those who want a power bank as svelte as their phone — even those who are investing in an iPhone Air. One of Anker’s latest fits the bill: the Anker Nano 5K MagGo Slim power bank.

    Now, both Anker and Amazon are running sales on it for Amazon Prime Day, dropping the price from $55 to $40.   • The second-gen Kindle Scribe is $100 off in this Prime Day deal

    Amazon Prime Day is here and you can save on all manner of tech, including Amazon’s devices, from Kindle tablets to Echo speakers.

    Take the Amazon Kindle Scribe, which has dropped to $300 from $400. The 25 percent discount brings the second-generation device back down to its all-time low price. This deal is available on the 16GB model in Tungsten (dark grey) and doesn’t include Kindle Unlimited. If you want more storage, the 32GB and 64GB versions are also 25 and 24 percent off, respectively.

    The Kindle Scribe is our pick for best e-reader E Ink tablet. It scored an 86 in our review, thanks to the smooth reading and writing experience it provides. We were also fans of its sleek and slender design. It has a 10.2-inch screen and offers front lights that auto-adjust to your needs. Our biggest gripe was the cost which, thanks to this deal, is less of an issue.

    It’s worth noting that Amazon announced a few new Kindle Scribe models recently, but none of them are available just yet. The Kindle Scribe 3 has a thinner and lighter design, plus faster page-turning and writing experiences. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is Amazon’s first full-color E Ink tablet. If you want the latest and greatest, it’s worth it to wait — but Amazon hasn’t yet named specific release dates for either new model. During its latest hardware event, it only said the new Scribes were coming “later this year.”

  • This 16-Inch Laptop Has Specs I Have Never Seen at a Price This Low

    As part of Best Buy’s “Techtober” sales event, I stumbled upon the best laptop deal I’ve seen in a while. It’s for $450 off the Acer Swift 16 AI (8/10, WIRED Recommends), costing $800. Now, I’m not saying $800 qualifies this as a “budget” laptop, but you have to check out the specs on this thing to see why I’m raving about the discount.

    The laptop not only comes with 16 GB of RAM and a terabyte of storage, but also a 16-inch OLED screen with a 2,880 x 1,800 resolution. That OLED screen even has a 120-Hz refresh rate. You won’t find a 16-inch laptop with a display this gorgeous at this price anywhere else. Importantly, it also comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 256V CPU, an efficient processor known for getting great battery life and decent performance. Our own testing resulted in 13 hours of YouTube video playback, which isn’t quite as long as other laptops with this chip. But as our reviewer put it, it’s likely good enough for most users.

    Look, the Acer Swift 16 AI wouldn’t be my first choice based on looks alone. It’s a bit chunkier than I’d prefer at 0.79 inches thick. There are certainly more attractive and portable 16-inch laptops out there, such as the LG Gram Pro 16 (6/10, WIRED Reviewed). Another really solid option I’m seeing is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition for $900. It has a slightly smaller 15.3-inch screen, but it’s a match with the Acer Swift 16 for specs, including the CPU and OLED display. The advantage is a prettier design and a much thinner chassis, at only 0.55 inches.

    Best Buy’s Techtober runs through October 12, which just so happens to align with Amazon’s October Prime Day sales event, also known as Big Deal Days. That being said, there will be a lot of great laptops on sale during Prime Day, so make sure to check back for the list I curated of all the best laptop deals happening this week.

  • The Ninja Slushi Regularly Sells Out—Prime Day Brings Its Cheapest-Ever Price

    The Ninja Slushi doesn’t go on sale often. Why would it? Throughout this year and last, the real story behind the Ninja Slushi was that you couldn’t find the dang thing in stock.

    What a difference a season makes: Now it’s $50 off list price on an early Prime Day deal. This is the best (and kinda the only) actual deal I’ve seen on the Ninja Slushi. It’s among the most exciting and surprising early Prime Day deals, but check out our rundown for more.

    I received a Ninja Slushi to test at the beginning of summer, and it changed my year a lot more than I expected. The Slushi has been an unbridled hit since it first came out (then promptly sold out) last year. It’s a feat of engineering that brought the bar slushie machine into the American home kitchen and onto the American home patio.

    I tested the Slushi against a couple new competitors, and the Ninja still reigned supreme. But I still didn’t expect to use it as much as I did.

    Just like my favorite soda maker, the Drinkmate Omnifizz ($133), the Slushi offered the chance to try pretty much every drink you already like … a different way. Orange juice slushie, cold-brew slushie latte, mimosa slushie, frosé all day, daiquiri slushie, negroni slushie, and tamarind michelada slushie. Fruity-sour craft beers slush like champions, it turns out, as do sweetly cheap wines from Grocery Outlet.

    I am apparently still a child, plus alcohol, is what I learned. I even nurtured by inner fraternity bro by making slushies from Bapple and Mike’s Hard Mango Lemonade. Both, by dint of being Very Cold and Very Sweet, were also trashily delicious.

    Attempts at soft serve ice cream or milkshakes didn’t really pan out, alas—you want a Ninja Swirl for that. But I dutifully lugged this thing to barbecues and to parties full of children—where the slushie machine was quickly commandeered for wholesome lemon-lime, strawberry, or orange-vanilla slush.

    Heck, I was named an honorary uncle to a tot and tween just for bringing this thing to a birthday party, and presumably bringing it again for the next one: You’ve gotta keep at least one slushie machine in the family, seems to be the idea. I can’t help but agree.

    Full disclosure: A new Kindle Scribe is coming, but we still think this is worth buying. The Kindle Scribe is our favorite e-reader for taking notes. It works well as a digital notebook and as a way to read your favorite books. With a generous 10-inch display and a Premium Pen (with a soft-tipped eraser on the end) included, you can use it to plan, journal, or annotate. There are some AI software features like note summarization, too. We do wish it was waterproof, or that it had some color features like the new model will, but if you’re in the market for something like it, it’s worth considering. There’s a chance it will get slightly cheaper when Prime Day actually arrives, but it likely won’t be by much—especially considering this is a match of the lowest price we’ve tracked.

    This smart ring is our favorite without a subscription. If you have been eyeing one, this deal is a match of the best we have tracked so far. The Ring Air can track your heart rate, blood oxygen, physical activity, and sleep, and it’ll offer insights about changes in your heart rate variability or skin temperature.   • Prime Day deal: The second-gen Kindle Scribe is $100 off

    We’re only one week away from Amazon Prime Day and the sales have already started. The deals include Amazon’s devices, from Kindle tablets to Echo speakers.

    Take the Amazon Kindle Scribe, which has dropped to $300 from $400. The 25 percent discount brings the second-generation device back down to its all-time low price. This deal is available on the 16GB model in Tungsten (dark grey) and doesn’t include Kindle Unlimited. If you want more storage, the 32GB and 64GB versions are also 25 and 24 percent off, respectively.

    The Kindle Scribe is our pick for best e-reader E Ink tablet. It scored an 86 in our review, thanks to the smooth reading and writing experience it provides. We were also fans of its sleek and slender design. It has a 10.2-inch screen and offers front lights that auto-adjust to your needs. Our biggest gripe was the cost which, thanks to this deal, is less of an issue.

    It’s worth noting that Amazon announced a few new Kindle Scribe models recently, but none of them are available just yet. The Kindle Scribe 3 has a thinner and lighter design, plus faster page-turning and writing experiences. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is Amazon’s first full-color E Ink tablet. If you want the latest and greatest, it’s worth it to wait — but Amazon hasn’t yet named specific release dates for either new model. During its latest hardware event, it only said the new Scribes were coming “later this year.”

    When Ninja announced it was jumping into the semiautomatic espresso market, I didn’t know quite what to make of it. But Ninja seems to have applied its general flair for multipurpose machines to this beautifully beginner-friendly espresso machine with a 25-setting conical burr grinder, a built-in scale (thank you), and options for cold brew and drip coffee.

    WIRED contributing reviewer Tyler Shane was likewise skeptical of Ninja’s first espresso device when it arrived but ended up loving the excellent milk steaming and the fact that this Ninja grinds espresso shots by weight. (Why doesn’t everybody?) She also appreciated the reasonable price—a price that’s even more reasonable ahead of Prime Day.

It’s a Goldilocks thing—a mix of accessible price, Breville’s excellent reputation for customer service on high-ticket items, and beautiful ease of use on a semiautomatic machine with a built-in grinder that makes full-flavored, well-extracted espresso. This $100 discount isn’t quite the lowest price we’ve seen on it—it’s been down to $550 before—but it’s a very good price.

    Full disclosure: A new Kindle Scribe is coming, but we still think this is worth buying. The Kindle Scribe is our favorite e-reader for taking notes. It works well as a digital notebook and as a way to read your favorite books. With a generous 10-inch display and a Premium Pen (with a soft-tipped eraser on the end) included, you can use it to plan, journal, or annotate. There are some AI software features like note summarization, too. We do wish it was waterproof, or that it had some color features like the new model will, but if you’re in the market for something like it, it’s worth considering. There’s a chance it will get slightly cheaper when Prime Day actually arrives, but it likely won’t be by much—especially considering this is a match of the lowest price we’ve tracked.

    Full disclosure: A new Kindle Scribe is coming, but we still think this is worth buying. The Kindle Scribe is our favorite e-reader for taking notes. It works well as a digital notebook and as a way to read your favorite books. With a generous 10-inch display and a Premium Pen (with a soft-tipped eraser on the end) included, you can use it to plan, journal, or annotate. There are some AI software features like note summarization, too.     We’re only one week away from Amazon Prime Day and the sales have already started. The deals include Amazon’s devices, from Kindle tablets to Echo speakers.

  • Don’t Let Prime Day Pass You By—Here Are Our Tips on How You Can Shop Like a Pro

    How Do I Know Whether a Deal Is Good?

    ABC: Always be checking (prices, that is). Researching an item’s price is the most important aspect of determining the quality of a discount. Don’t fall prey to deceptive marketing language and inflated MSRP prices—our tips only take a few moments. The easiest step is to take a second to Google the items you’re considering so you can see the price across multiple stores.

    One tool we like to use is Camelcamelcamel, which tracks Amazon’s prices over time. Paste the Amazon link or ASIN (found in the Product Information section on the Amazon product page) into Camelcamelcamel’s search bar and you’ll be able to see an item’s lowest recorded price, its average price, and how frequently the price fluctuates. Some deals, such as Lightning Deals, are excluded from the pricing history, but it works for most items. It’s useful to see what an item has sold for in the past. And while Amazon’s Rufus chatbot has price history information, it isn’t always reliable and often misses context (as evinced by our personal testing). We also like Keepa, which has an extension (available for multiple browsers) that shows the recent price history for products directly on the Amazon page so you don’t have to open a new tab.

    Keep in mind that these services may not work all the time. But being able to see how much a product costs right before the sale starts (and whether the MSRP happened to increase) can be helpful. Putting these tools together can help you deduce whether a deal is worth your money.

    What’s a Lightning Deal?

    Lightning Deals are limited-time deals that Amazon runs for only a few hours. They’re not restricted to Prime Big Deal Days, but they’re especially prevalent during major sales events. Once an item sells out, you may be able to join a waiting list, but not always.

    Put bluntly, the Lightning Deals selection is often full of impulse buys, like makeup and skin-care products or toys. Prime members can browse upcoming deals on Amazon’s website and in the mobile app. The app can also alert you before a Lightning Deal begins. We’ll share some of our favorite Lightning Deals in a live blog during the event this year.

    How Does the Invite-Only Deals System Work?

    The best deals sometimes sell out quickly. To get around this, Amazon launched an invite-only deals program during Prime Day. Prime members can request an invitation to purchase items that are expected to go out of stock. This feature is only available on select products, but it’s spread across a wide range of price points and categories—including kitchen, electronics, fashion, and beauty.

    On the deal page, you’ll see a Request Invite button on the right-hand side. Click it to get a chance to buy it at the sale price, but just keep in mind that there’s no guarantee you’ll be invited. According to an Amazon spokesperson, the company removes “botlike submissions” from the list of requests and selects from the remaining customers. However, it’s not clear how Amazon chooses from the remaining list of interested buyers.
