Two consumers allege that Amazon misled customers by promoting false discounts on its site during its summer Prime Day sale.
In a proposed class action lawsuit filed in September in a federal court in Washington state, plaintiffs Cathy Armstrong of California and Oluwa Fosudo of Maryland, claim that Amazon used “fictional” list prices to calculate its recent Prime Day percentage discounts, making deals appear better than they actually were.
The lawsuit details a number of examples of what plaintiffs refer to as “fake sales” during the four-day Prime Day event, which ran July 8-11.
One such example is a pair of headphones advertised by Amazon on Prime Day as being on sale for 44% off a list price of $179.95, according to the complaint. Plaintiffs, however, claim that the actual list price for the item has always been in the range of “$130 to $160,” making the 44% Prime Day discount “inflated fiction.”
“Amazon uses these fake Prime Day Percentage Discounts, offered under the extreme time pressure of the brief Prime Day window, to lure consumers to purchase products,” the court filing states.
In another example, the lawsuit mentions an 8-inch Android tablet for kids listed as “40% off,” based on a strikethrough list price of $119.99. However, in the 90 days leading up to the sale, the tablet was being offered between $50 and $85, with a median price of $72, according to the court filing. That means the supposedly time-limited Prime Day Deal of $72.18 was actually higher than the $50 price Amazon offered it for in April, and about the same price the tablet usually goes for on Amazon, the lawsuit states.
“But for Amazon’s false and misleading representations, Plaintiffs would also have shopped around for better prices in the marketplace or waited to purchase the items at a better price,” according to the complaint.
The lawyers who brought the suit on behalf of the plaintiffs declined to comment, citing the pending litigation.
They filed the proposed class action lawsuit after Popular Information, a Substack newsletter focused on corporate and political accountability, published a story calling out some of the allegedly deceptive tactics Amazon used during its Prime Day event.
Amazon declined to comment.
On its corporate website, the company calls the recent four-day sale its biggest Prime event to date, and states that customers “saved billions on deals.” The e-commerce giant held a separate Prime Day event this week from Oct. 7-8.
Amazon in September agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle federal claims it misled customers into signing up for Prime and made it difficult for them to cancel their membership. As part of the settlement, Amazon must pay a $1 billion civil penalty — the largest ever in an FTC rule violation case.

This isn’t the sexiest hard drive around, but for incremental backups, which we recommend, speed isn’t a factor. That’s why I recommend this Western Digital Elements hard drive. These drives are big and require external power, but they’re some of the cheapest, most reliable drives I’ve used. I have been using a variation of the Elements desktop hard drive to make incremental backups of my data for more than a decade. Transfer speeds are not off the charts—the Elements drive I tested scored 120 megabytes per second (MB/s) for sequential writes on Windows—but again, you should ideally be running backups overnight anyway, and even at these speeds the average PC backup will be done by morning. My favorite Echo Show device is on sale for Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, and it’s one of the devices you can actually enjoy Alexa+ on (if you’ve gotten early access, that is). It’s a Goldilocks device: not too small to actually use the screen, but also not so large that it’s too hard to place on a kitchen counter or similar space around your home. It’s one of my all-time favorite Alexa speakers and smart displays for a reason. I use it for everything, from asking for recipe replacements while I cook to playing the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack again for my son. But this beginner-friendly semi-automatic machine—with a built-in conical burr grinder that grinds by weight—was the pleasant surprise of last year. The Ninja Luxe Cafe Premier impressed WIRED reviewer Tyler Shane not just for its value, but also for the shockingly good automatic milk steaming, the auto-tamping on the portafilter, and the built-in scale. It’s not perfect: The cold brew and drip coffee functions are merely “fine.” But this is the lowest price we’ve ever seen this machine. The Dyson V15 Detect is our current favorite Dyson vacuum, and one of our favorite stick vacuums to boot. It’s an all-around great stick vacuum with Dyson’s power, a range of attachments, and a trigger-style power button. The Plus version is on sale right now, which has a slightly different set of attachments and is otherwise the same vacuum. I like the trigger button for things like cleaning stairs, but it can be a little annoying to use in larger rooms. With the attachments you’ll get a crevice tool, a dusting brush, a hair screw tool, and two cleaner heads, which include the Fluffy Optic cleaner head that shoots out a green laser, making it easy to find all the debris hiding on hard surfaces. Look, it’s a space heater! An air purifier! A fan! It’s Dyson’s Hot+Cool HP10, the most “sophisticated home atmospheric management tool” WIRED reviewer Matthew Korfhage tested for his guide to the Best Space Heaters. (Well, technically, that was the smart-version HP7, but this is the same thing minus the app.) Featuring Dyson’s classic ellipse, this version is not smart, but it does have a remote that sticks magnetically to the body, as well as oscillation up to 350 degrees and a fully enclosed HEPA system. Amazon Prime Day is a sale for members of the online retailer’s shopping program—most people sign up to get free shipping, but you also get lots of other perks like Thursday Night NFL football (mostly divisional matchups though Vikings-Chargers in two weeks is interesting). Prime Day includes tens of thousands of deals only available to Prime members, not including $1.50 hot dogs (a Costco membership is required for that).
Is Prime Big Deal Days Different?
Not really. Prime Day is in July and—following what we can only imagine are heated debates inside a Seattle conference room overlooking the Puget Sound, with the smell of fresh Starbucks percolating in the hall as master marketers respectfully exchange divergent philosophies—only in July. Amazon has tried a number of ways of distinguishing its autumnal sale, including the very catchy “Prime Fall Deal Event” and “Prime Early Access Sale.” All are multi-day sales events for Prime members.
Do You Need a Subscription to Shop?
You do, though you can get a free trial and cancel within a month. More than likely you will join more than a hundred million other Americans in signing up with the intention of canceling only to realize you’re addicted to free shipping and want to see the Cowboys-Lions game the week after Thanksgiving.
It lasts for just shy of 48 hours, starting in the wee hours of October 7 and going through October 8 at midnight EST.
Are There Other Sales Going On?

You can get Sony’s WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones for $250 in a limited time deal for Amazon Prime Day. That’s $150 off its launch price, $50 off its regular Amazon list price and only a cent more than its all-time low of $249.99. While the model was released a few years ago, it’s still a fantastic alternative to the newer but pricier WH-1000XM6, which you can also get with a discount of $20 from Amazon right now. We gave the WH-1000XM5 a score of 95 when we reviewed it and praised its redesign for providing a massive increase in comfort.

When it comes to sound quality, we found its bass punchier than its predecessors’. The model provided more depth and more clarity than the WH-1000XM4, which made the listening experience more immersive. Sony doubled the the number of processors and the number of microphones that handle noise cancelation on the WH-1000XM5, as well, making it better at blocking sounds with higher frequencies like human voices.
Of course, the WH-1000XM6 has better sound quality and an improved active noise cancellation technology. But with a price of $450 — currently $428 for Prime Day — it’s a much bigger expense. If you don’t mind getting an even older model, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is also on sale for $188. The model, released in 2020, has dated features by now compared to the newer iterations of the headphones. But Sony’s WH-1000X headphones have always been some of the best, and a five-year-old model could be better than some newer devices out there.

JBL Xtreme 2 for $150 (17 percent off): This deal is a great way to get ahold of the JBL Xtreme 2, an old favorite from 2018 we still love. An Xtreme 2 can get louder than you’d expect from a portable speaker, putting out 40 watts at maximum, and stays charged for around 15 hours.
JBL Flip 6 for $100 (23 percent off): The JBL Flip 6 is a solid choice for an all-around bluetooth speaker, performing well in any room or on the go. It sounds good at almost any frequency and volume, runs for 12 hours on a single charge and is nearly impossible to damage with falls, dust or water.
JBL Go 3 for $35 (30 percent off): The JBL Go 3 is a decent and highly affordable carabiner speaker for all your outdoor adventures — as is its sister product, the Go 3 Eco, which is made from recycled materials. It’s obviously not the most powerful speaker at 4.2 watts, but it has a surprisingly good functional range. Plus, the design looks good on any belt or backpack.
Beats Pill for $119 (34 percent off): This Bluetooth speaker from Apple subsidiary Beats earned a score of 83 in our review and currently holds a spot in our buying guide. It’s not the best raw value on the market, and it can struggle at maximum volume, but it generally pumps out strong bass without sounding imbalanced. A stylish and water-resistant design, ample battery life and the ability to play lossless audio over a USB-C cable add to the appeal. This sizable discount matches the lowest price we’ve tracked.
Ultimate Ears Miniroll for $47 (41 percent off): Miniroll is the smallest speaker from Ultimate Ears, but it punches far above its weight, starting with UE’s trademark massive volume buttons. While small enough to fit in a jeans pocket, its combination of a driver and radiator manages about 85 decibels. A Miniroll can run for about 12 hours on a single charge.
Ultimate Ears Boom 4 for $95 (37 percent off): The UE Boom 4 is a balanced speaker that does well anywhere. Take it camping (it’s waterproof and a charge lasts for 15 hours), to a party (it puts out loud 360 degree sound) or make it part of a permanent home system by chaining it with other UE speakers — one of these plus two Minirolls or Wonderbooms would come pretty close to full surround sound.
Ultimate Ears Everboom for $231 (15 percent off): The Everboom is the middle ground of the UE line, with more powerful output than the Wonderboom and more portability than the Hyperboom. Its 360 degree sound pairs with an Outdoor Boost feature to work better outside, though it isn’t quite as impressive in the middle ranges.
Bose SoundLink Flex for $99 (34 percent off): We’ve rarely seen the Bose SoundLink Flex this cheap, so now is the time to snap up this high-fidelity outdoor speaker. It’s small enough to carry in one hand and can be operated from up to 30 feet away via the Bose Connect app. We’ve also found it simple and fun to use for hands-free phone calls during breaks in the music.
Bose SoundLink Revolve+ for $179 (40 percent off): The SoundLink Revolve+ line, Bose’s original upright 360-degree speakers, continue to pack a punch. This current model features a 17-hour battery life, IP55 water resistance and the ability to connect to a smart speaker to extend your virtual assistant’s range.
Bose SoundLink Max for $299 (25 percent off): The Bose SoundLink Max may put you in mind of a classic boombox, with its detachable handle and thudding base. But inside it’s all modern, with a 50-watt output, an effective range of 52.6Hz and a 20-hour rechargeable battery. It even comes with a 3.5mm AUX input to connect to a turntable, if you really want to embrace your inner 90s DJ.
Anker Soundcore 2 for $28 (38 percent off): This larger speaker doesn’t look like much, but it’s tough, water-resistant and versatile. It’s got a broad range of optimal pitch, effective across 70 Hz from bass to treble, and 12 watts of output. While it’s portable and sounds good outdoors, its wide design means it can also substitute for a soundbar in your home theater.
Soundcore Select 4 Go for $18 (20 percent off): The Soundcore Select 4 Go weighs only 9.3 ounces, which makes the rest of its specs even more impressive: 20 hours of battery life, IP67 waterproofing and sound that fills rooms. It even sounds pretty good in compact outdoor spaces, more than capable of serenading an outdoor desk or livening up a pool party.
Soundcore Motion 300 for $56 (30 percent off): The Soundcore Motion 300 is a full-frequency champ, with clean sound in the higher ranges and reasonably heavy bass. Its adaptive audio feature changes output depending on whether the speaker is currently lying down, standing on end or hanging from your belt loop. It’s also small and light enough to carry in your pocket or clip to your backpack.
Marshall Emberton II for $100 (44 percent off): Marshall, the old warhorse of the audio world, continues to crush it with the portable and bluetooth-ready Emberton II. Although it looks like an antique, it’s anything but, with 360-degree sound and over 30 hours of battery life from a single charge — all weighing a little more than a quarter of a pound.
Marshall Acton III for $200 (33 percent off): Marshall recently re-engineered the Acton’s speaker setup by angling the tweeters outward. It’s a little quiet, and probably best for extending Alexa’s range rather than serving as the primary host for your virtual assistant. In a smaller room, though, this is as convenient and clear-sounding as any other Echo you’ll use.
Amazon Echo Spot for $45 (44 percent off): Other than perhaps the Pop, no Amazon Echo fits better on a bedside table than the Spot. Its user-friendly design incorporates both a speaker and a digital display — so it’s recognizable as a classic alarm clock, but with much more information on the screen and far better sound quality. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen it sell for.
Sonos Era 100 for $180 (10 percent off): The Sonos Era 100 is a fantastic smart speaker for an even better price. It’s not only loud — it also sounds good at any volume, no matter what platform you’re streaming audio from. It can connect via bluetooth or physical lines, and uses TruePlay to tune the sound to your current location using included mics.
Sonos Era 300 for $379 (21 percent off): In our full review of the Sonos Era 300, we found that it’s easy to set up and sounds incredible. It includes the exciting spatial audio feature that makes music sound like it’s coming from everywhere — while it doesn’t always work, it’s exhilarating when it hits. The current model dates from 2023, but the Octa Core processor is plenty fast enough for consuming Amazon Prime content, which is really the primary reason to buy a Fire tablet. The full HD (1080p) screen won’t win any awards, but it’s good enough for streaming movies. Fire tablets can do double duty as an Echo speaker, too. This isn’t the sexiest hard drive around, but for incremental backups, which we recommend, speed isn’t a factor. That’s why I recommend this Western Digital Elements hard drive. These drives are big and require external power, but they’re some of the cheapest, most reliable drives I’ve used. I have been using a variation of the Elements desktop hard drive to make incremental backups of my data for more than a decade. Transfer speeds are not off the charts—the Elements drive I tested scored 120 megabytes per second (MB/s) for sequential writes on Windows—but again, you should ideally be running backups overnight anyway, and even at these speeds the average PC backup will be done by morning. These drives use USB-C with support for USB 3, and I’ve had no problem using them with Windows, macOS, and Linux. —Scott Gilbertson

My favorite Echo Show device is on sale for Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days, and it’s one of the devices you can actually enjoy Alexa+ on (if you’ve gotten early access, that is). It’s a Goldilocks device: not too small to actually use the screen, but also not so large that it’s too hard to place on a kitchen counter or similar space around your home. It’s one of my all-time favorite Alexa speakers and smart displays for a reason. I use it for everything, from asking for recipe replacements while I cook to playing the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack again for my son. There’s a new version coming later this month, but it certainly won’t be on sale for this cheap anytime soon. —Nena Farrell

Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) for $55 ($35 off): This mini version of the Echo Show devices is a little too small to really enjoy the screen, but I’ve liked using it as a workout speaker to see the songs or tap to pause.

Surface Laptop (7th Edition, 2024)
I test new laptops almost every week, but I keep coming back to the Surface Laptop 7th Edition. It’s a fantastic MacBook alternative in its own right, both sleek and designerly. Though it launched last year, it uses the Snapdragon X Elite chip, providing fantastic performance and battery life. But it’s the 120-Hz screen with its unique 3:2 aspect ratio panel that always draws me to it, which gives you more vertical height than the average laptop has. It will likely be many more months before Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon X2 chips come out, so the Surface Laptop 7th Edition is still safe to buy. Just don’t confuse this with the newer, cheaper Surface Laptop 13, which lacks many of the things I appreciate most about the larger, 13.8-inch model. —Luke Larsen

Ultraloq makes a ton of different smart locks, and the on-sale U-Bolt Pro is just one of many that we’ve tested. It can be a little confusing to navigate the lineup, and while we didn’t have great experiences with the Fingerprint with HomeKit and Matter models, the Pro (and regular Fingerprint) smart lock worked well in WIRED reviewer Julian Chokkattu’s home. This lock is easy to install, has built-in Wi-Fi and a fingerprint sensor, and uses four AA batteries that Julian found last about two months. There’s a hidden keyhole to use as a backup, plus a charging port (unfortunately a Micro USB port, rather than the more popular USB-C). The Dyson V15 Detect is our current favorite Dyson vacuum, and one of our favorite stick vacuums to boot. It’s an all-around great stick vacuum with Dyson’s power, a range of attachments, and a trigger-style power button. The Plus version is on sale right now, which has a slightly different set of attachments and is otherwise the same vacuum. I like the trigger button for things like cleaning stairs, but it can be a little annoying to use in larger rooms. With the attachments you’ll get a crevice tool, a dusting brush, a hair screw tool, and two cleaner heads, which include the Fluffy Optic cleaner head that shoots out a green laser, making it easy to find all the debris hiding on hard surfaces. Prime Day includes tens of thousands of deals only available to Prime members, not including $1.50 hot dogs (a Costco membership is required for that).
Is Prime Big Deal Days Different?
Not really. Prime Day is in July and—following what we can only imagine are heated debates inside a Seattle conference room overlooking the Puget Sound, with the smell of fresh Starbucks percolating in the hall as master marketers respectfully exchange divergent philosophies—only in July. Amazon has tried a number of ways of distinguishing its autumnal sale, including the very catchy “Prime Fall Deal Event” and “Prime Early Access Sale.” All are multi-day sales events for Prime members.
Do You Need a Subscription to Shop?
You do, though you can get a free trial and cancel within a month. More than likely you will join more than a hundred million other Americans in signing up with the intention of canceling only to realize you’re addicted to free shipping and want to see the Cowboys-Lions game the week after Thanksgiving.
It lasts for just shy of 48 hours, starting in the wee hours of October 7 and going through October 8 at midnight EST.
Are There Other Sales Going On?

Aqara Smart Lock U50 for $100 ($50 off): This is my favorite lock if you want a full replacement. It’s easy to install, well-made, and surprisingly affordable compared to the competition. You’ll need to add on a bridge, but Aqara makes a cheaper one now.
The best laptop deal of this big week of deals can’t be found on Amazon. Not on Best Buy or Walmart either. Instead, at Dell.com, you’ll find the Dell 14 Plus (6/10, WIRED Reviewed) selling for just $650. For a Windows device, that price thoroughly categorizes it as a “budget laptop,” but the specs are anything but. It has 16 GB of RAM, a terabyte of storage, and a 2560 x 1600 resolution display. The average laptop of this price is worse is just about every way.
In my own testing of this laptop, I found a lot to like about it. The processor used is the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, which is a flagship chip used in some of the best laptops, some of which cost up to a thousand dollars more, including within Dell’s own lineup. One of the great benefits of this chip is battery life, which I was happy to be surprised by. You’ll easily get a full day of work away from the outlet. The performance is more than enough for most people, and it even has some impressive integrated graphics. The display, is also quite good. It’s colorful, and there’s even a 90 Hz refresh rate. I didn’t love the matte display and plastic bezels, but the panel itself is surprisingly high quality. I wasn’t as impressed by this when the price was $1,099, but for $650? It’s heads and tails over the competition.

Compare it to the Asus Vivobook 14 (6/10, WIRED Reviewed), for example, another “budget” laptop that I’ve recommended in the past. It only has a 1920 X 1200 resolution display with a 60 Hz refresh rate and really, poor color accuracy. It has a sickly green tone that’s hard to get around.
The one caveat is that when I reviewed the Dell 14 Plus, it came with 32 GB of RAM. There was no 16 GB option, which is now available. Even with that difference, though, this configuration of the Dell 14 Plus is the best Windows laptop deal I’ve seen in recent memory.
So, yes, if you’re shopping for a Windows laptop, this is clearly the one to buy. The only exception I’d give is if you’re looking for something with a larger screen. If that’s you, I’d point you to the Acer Swift 16 AI (8/10, WIRED Recommends). It has a lot of the same specs as the Dell 14 Plus, but comes with a larger (and higher-resolution screen)—and importantly—has a more expansive screen. It’s $800 though, so you’ll be paying $150 more for this 16-inch laptop.
It’s Prime Day times, and one of my favorite sonic surprises of 2025 is getting a sweet discount. The Sony Bravia Theater System 6 is one of the best soundbar setups I’ve tested this year, offering a unique mix of components that serve up some of the most thrilling and musical surround sound you can get for the money. There aren’t a ton of fancy features here, but you’ll get everything you need in one box to take your TV setup from boring to bodacious.
The Bravia Theater System 6 comes in a rather large box, with its hefty subwoofer taking up most of the real estate. The large cabinet serves as both the sonic foundation and the primary hub of the 5.1-channel system, offering all inputs and connecting to the slim soundbar via a small flat cable. Inputs include HDMI eARC for seamless TV connection, as well as digital optical and 3.5-mm analog input for legacy sources.
A small amplifier box connects to the subwoofer wirelessly, while two more flat cables connect the tall surround speakers. It’s a lot of wires for a single-box surround system in 2025, but the payoff is performance that gets refreshingly close to more complex multi-speaker setups. You’ll get punch and verve in the bass, smooth musicality and poised dialog from the bar, and clear and fluid surround channels from the back speakers. While there aren’t any upfiring speakers for 3D sound formats like Dolby Atmos, the System 6 does a commendable job virtualizing Atmos.
One thing you won’t get in the package is Wi-Fi support, which means you’ll be confined to Bluetooth streaming, and any updates need to be done manually with a USB drive, yet another callback to older Home Theater in a Box (HTiB) systems.
A bit of awkwardness in setup is worth it for the sheer cinematic performance the Bravia Theater System 6 serves up. It’s worth the splurge for many at full price, but this discount makes it a much easier choice for anyone looking to take their basic TV setup to the next level. If you want to be fully immersed in your films and TV shows, this setup delivers.

I can’t give the Soundcore Life Q30 a better recommendation than to say that I took them on a transcontinental trip, and they were up to the challenge. The noise canceling can’t match the big boys, but it keeps the drone sounds at bay, while their rich sound punches up films, TV shows, and music to keep you entertained as you float five miles high. The chassis is a bit of a scratch magnet, but they fit comfortably for hours and even come with a case. Soundcore has updated its lineup, but there’s a reason the Life Q30 have stuck around for years.

If you’re new to open earbuds, they keep your ear canals open so you can hear your music without checking out. Having recently become a steward of a mercurial newborn, I’ve found yet another fantastic use for them, letting me catch up on my Lonely Island podcast without neglecting my little one. This sale won’t change the equation for most budgets, but then again, at just $21, can you afford not to buy these earbuds? Amazon Prime Big Deal Days means sweet sales on some of our favorite gear, and as perhaps the best smart speaker we’ve ever tested, the Sonos Era 100 certainly qualifies. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for Sonos’ entry-level speaker, so if you’ve been looking to grab one or two of these stylish columns to fill your home’s halls with sound, now’s the time to strike.
The Era 100 has it all: tons of features, responsive microphones for voice commands, sleek style, and even the great Giancarlo Esposito (or his voice, at least). Best of all for my money is the Era 100’s fantastic sound, offering smooth midrange frequencies, sparkling treble, and punchy bass that’s much more robust than you’d expect for the size (and price).
Of course, there is an elephant in the room. The Sonos app, once the pride of the Sonos empire, has had some major issues of late, including dropping speakers off user networks, among other quirks. That said, Sonos has admitted its failures and worked hard to address user issues, including appointing a new CEO who has spoken frankly on the matter. That work seems to have paid off, as the software and hardware seem to be much more stable for users in recent months.
For my part, the Sonos Era 100 and its pricier sibling, the Era 300, have both been working great on my network for months, providing stalwart connection to go along with their excellent performance. I’ve even recently connected an older Sonos/Ikea Symfonisk Lamp on my network for our newborn baby’s nursery, and all three speakers have been working well in concert.
The setup lets me enjoy all the bounty Sonos has to offer, including features like multi-room connection, prompt voice response, access to nearly any and every music streaming service, and extras like Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and Apple AirPlay. The Era 100 also provides smooth and meticulously designed touch controls on top of the speaker, and even a line-in input. It all adds up to a slick and seamless smart speaker experience.

4-in-1 Radiant Renewal Wand
Solawave’s wand will take a little more work than just slapping a mask on. You need to hold it (duh) and manually massage your face while you use it, but you’ll only have to do this for three minutes at a time compared to the 10 minutes of a typical face mask. The vibration can feel funny at first, but it makes for a relaxing experience once you get the hang of it. A few different WIRED staffers who tried this wand said they saw positive results with skin tightening, particularly in areas around the eyes. Note that it only has a single 630-nm red-light wavelength.
The wand isn’t the only thing Solawave has on sale. Solawave’s Red Light Therapy Face Mask is also on sale for $227 ($122 off), and is a pretty comfortable, flexible mask. It’s the fairest price point for the quality of all I’ve tested. Regularly $500, it’s $150 off right now, making it well below the price point of many comparable models, like the Litter-Robot 4, which is regularly $700.
I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but the PuraMax 2 actually smells good.
