  • Amazon delivered 8 billion items to its US Prime members in less than 2 days last year

    [ad_1]

Amazon (AMZN) announced Tuesday that its Prime members in the US received 8 billion items on the same day or next day last year, up 30% from 2024, as the company continues to double down on speeding up delivery times across its network.

“We focus on savings, convenience, and entertainment as the cornerstones of the Prime program, and so convenience has to go up and up as expectations go up and up,” Jamil Ghani, VP of Amazon Prime, told Yahoo Finance.

Globally, 13 billion items were received in less than two days by Prime members.

Amazon said that for its US Prime deliveries, half of the items delivered in less than two days were groceries or household essentials. The company said members saved $550, on average, on shipping costs.

In 2025, Amazon invested $4 billion to expand its same-day and next-day delivery to 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural communities. Last week, the company announced plans to close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores to focus on delivery services and expanding Whole Foods, which Amazon acquired in 2017.

The company is continuing to step up its investments in faster delivery as Walmart (WMT) continues to pour money into its own delivery network, which the retailer says is able to reach 93% of US households for same-day delivery.

Amazon expanded its same-day delivery service for perishable goods to over 5,000 US cities, with plans to expand in 2026. In 2025, the company delivered 70% more items in less than a day.

“Think about those buildings that we’ve now built, and we’ve retrofitted them with all the lessons we’ve learned, most importantly, from Whole Foods, about how to have a seamless, high-quality, freshness-guaranteed supply chain experience for perishable items,” Ghani told Yahoo Finance.

The company also expanded its same-day delivery network for its pharmacy business; in 2018, Amazon acquired PillPack in a bold move into the pharmacy space.

Ghani said AI has also served as the “latest enabler” to increase delivery speeds, particularly in its pharmacy segment. Ghani said Amazon was able to cut processing time for patients by 90% compared to the pharmacy industry benchmark by removing the wait times, syncing data, and expediting document reviews.

On its third quarter earnings call, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said being able to deliver more perishable groceries was the physical delivery opportunity he was “most excited about.”

“We started with a few markets about a year ago, and we were really taken aback at the adoption,” Jassy added.

  • Amazon accidentally leaks thousands of job cuts under ‘Project Dawn’ – Tech Digest

    [ad_1]

    Share

Amazon has inadvertently confirmed a massive new round of global layoffs after a senior executive’s draft email was accidentally sent to staff via a calendar invitation.

The leak, which occurred late Tuesday, reveals that the tech giant is moving forward with a restructuring initiative codenamed “Project Dawn,” targeting employees across the US, Canada, and Costa Rica.

The email was authored by Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS). It was reportedly shared in error by an executive assistant before being abruptly cancelled. In the message, Aubrey characterized the job cuts as part of a broader effort to “strengthen the company” by removing bureaucracy and reducing management layers so the organization can “move faster for customers.”

While Amazon had already slashed 14,000 positions in October, this latest leak confirms employee fears that a much larger reduction is underway. Insiders suggest the company is aiming for a total of 30,000 redundancies by May 2026. Those affected by the cuts are reportedly being offered limited opportunities to reapply for internal roles, with others receiving severance packages based on their tenure.

The “Project Dawn” revelations come as CEO Andy Jassy continues a aggressive campaign to “rethink everything” at Amazon. Under Jassy’s leadership, the firm has not only implemented multiple rounds of layoffs but has also enforced a strict five-day-a-week in-office mandate: a move that sets it apart from other tech peers like Google and Meta.

The company is also aggressively cutting costs elsewhere, recently announcing the closure of its 70 Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores to focus on its Whole Foods subsidiary.

Amazon is not alone in its downsizing. The tech industry has seen approximately 700,000 layoffs over the last four years. However, the accidental nature of this announcement has sparked further anxiety among a workforce already grappling with a rapidly changing corporate culture. Amazon has declined to comment officially on the leaked correspondence.

  • Amazon is closing all Fresh grocery stores in the UK

    [ad_1]

Amazon is pivoting its grocery operations in the UK, announcing that it will close 14 of its Amazon Fresh stores in the country. The remaining five Amazon Fresh locations in the UK will be converted to the Whole Foods Market brand. Rather than the brick and mortar shops, Amazon said it will focus on online grocery deliveries within the region. In 2026, the company said it expects to add perishables to its Same-Day Delivery orders for UK customers, which was just introduced in the US last month.

The move echoes a similar contraction in 2023, where Amazon said it would shutter both some Fresh supermarkets and some Go convenience stores. Many of these shops highlighted the Just Walk Out tech from Amazon, which it introduced in the US in 2018 and in the UK in 2021. Just Walk Out eliminated cashiers in those stores and instead charged customers by using a network of cameras, sensors and human observers checking video feeds to calculate the tab for a person’s purchase and then charge them afterwards. However, the approach yielded concerns around cost, accuracy and privacy. Amazon stopped using Just Walk Out in its US Fresh stores last year.

Update, September 23, 2025, 5:55PM ET: Revised to correct a misstatement about Amazon’s current use of Just Walk Out in the US.

  • Amazon Fresh stores in Chevy Chase, Franconia get a refresh – WTOP News

Amazon Fresh stores in Chevy Chase, Franconia get a refresh – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

Amazon, which recently resumed openings of new Fresh grocery stores after a yearlong pause, held “grand reopenings” for two of its D.C.-area stores Saturday.

Amazon, which recently resumed openings of new Fresh grocery stores after a yearlong pause, held “grand reopenings” for two of its D.C.-area stores Saturday.

The redesigned Amazon Fresh stores, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Franconia, Virginia, followed similar redesigns of Fresh stores in Chicago and Southern California. The stores carry more national brands, higher-quality produce and meats, and more of Amazon’s own private-label brands, including Aplenty, Amazon Fresh, 365 by Whole Foods and Amazon’s newest private-label brand, Amazon Saver.

Some changes have also been made to the stores’ layouts.

Neither store closed during the changes. The Franconia store, which opened in 2021, was the first Amazon Fresh store in the D.C. area as part of its East Coast expansion. The Chevy Chase store, near the Friendship Heights Metro station, opened that same year. Amazon opened a second Fresh store in Chevy Chase in 2022.

There are other Amazon Fresh stores in Fairfax City, Lorton and Manassas. Its newest Fresh store is in Potomac Yard in Alexandria, which opened in July. Another opened in Gaithersburg in August. And similar upgrades are likely.

“Based on what we have heard and seen from customers and heard from our teams, we will continue to bring the concept to new and existing store locations with many of the elements you see in Chevy Chase and Franconia,” an Amazon spokesman said.

In addition to the D.C. area and Southern California, the only other Fresh stores are in the Chicago area, Seattle area, Philadelphia area and New York and New Jersey.

There are about 40 Fresh stores nationally. The Amazon Fresh store in Crystal City closed earlier this year.

“We are doing a fair bit of experimentation today in those stores to try to find a format that we think resonates with customers,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said following Amazon’s fourth quarter earnings report in February. “We’ve decided over the last year or so that we’re not going to expand the physical Fresh until we have that equation.”

Amazon has since slowly resumed Fresh additions. This summer, in addition to the Potomac Yard and Gaithersburg locations, Amazon opened nine other Fresh stores in other markets.

The newest D.C.-area Amazon Fresh store will open at Potomac Yard in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 25 in a former Shoppers Food Warehouse space.

It will be the seventh Amazon Fresh store open in the D.C. area, though it closed smaller Fresh stores in D.C.’s Logan Circle and Crystal City in Arlington earlier this year. Other existing Amazon Fresh stores are in Fairfax, Franconia, Lorton and Manassas in Northern Virginia, and two locations in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The 50,000-square-foot Potomac Yard Amazon Fresh, at 3801 Richmond Highway, will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Amazon Fresh has 42 locations in eight states, the majority of them in California and the Chicago area. Amazon also owns Whole Foods, which has close to 500 stores in the U.S. and more than a dozen in the D.C. area.

Amazon has slowed the rollout of new Amazon Fresh stores as it works to find the right mix of products, services and technology. Stores include a mix of Dash Carts, with touchscreens that help shoppers navigate stores, Alexa kiosks and its Amazon One palm-reading technology for payments.

Amazon Fresh stores are as much online grocery order-fulfillment centers as they are grocery stores with shoppers likely to see multiple order fillers and delivery drivers sharing the aisle with them.

“We remain committed to grocery, and will selectively open new Amazon Fresh stores as we see positive customer feedback on the new format, as well as continue to open new Whole Foods Market stores,” Amazon said in a statement.

The Potomac Yard Amazon Fresh is near the $1 billion Virginia Tech innovation campus currently under construction. It joins other retailers at Potomac Yard, including T.J. Maxx, Total Wine, Target, Staples, PetSmart, Old Navy, J. Crew Factory, Men’s Wearhouse, Home Goods, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble, as well as several restaurants.

  • Amazon Is Now Charging a Fee to Make Some Returns at UPS | Entrepreneur

Amazon Is Now Charging a Fee to Make Some Returns at UPS | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Amazon built its business on customer service, believing everything would fall into place if the company made shopping easy and convenient. Case in point: Their return policy allows customers to return millions of items they don’t want free of charge.

But that return policy is also wildly expensive. In 2021, a record $761 billion of merchandise was returned to retailers, according to the National Retail Federation.

Now Amazon wants its customers to think twice before sending products back. The e-commerce giant has quietly implemented a new policy, charging customers a $1 fee if they return items to a UPS store instead of a Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh, or Kohl’s closer to their address, according to a report in The Information.

Amazon owns Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh, and Kohl’s partners with the company.

Amazon is also warning consumers about “frequently returned” items sold on their site. They recently introduced a badge that tells shoppers to check the product details and customer reviews on items with higher return rates in their product category.

Related: San Francisco Whole Foods Closes To ‘Ensure Safety’ of Employees

    Amazon cutting costs

The new return fee is the latest in a series of cost-cutting measures implemented by Amazon. Last month, the company announced it would be laying off 9,000 workers, following an earlier round of layoffs last year that saw pink slips handed out to more than 18,000 employees.

While Amazon’s return fees are surprising, they’re not unprecedented. Other retail chains have recently done away with their free online return policy, including Abercrombie & Fitch (which charges $7), American Eagle, Foot Locker, Urban Outfitters, and Zara.

If there is any good news to come out of these new return policies, it’s that they have a positive impact on the environment. Returns cause 16 million metric tons of carbon emissions and up to 5.8 billion pounds of landfill waste in the U.S. each year, according to Optoro.

Less returns mean less waste — even if it may cost you a buck.
