How are we going to continue to save more lives?” And luckily, we’ve had friends along the way who have helped us with the upkeep of this shelter.

Last year was extremely challenging for animal shelters in the US, and Austin was no exception. The Austin of yesteryear found tremendous pride in leading the country in No Kill during a time when shelters struggled the most to save the lives of even half of the pets who entered their care. In this new era of humane struggles, where pets are guaranteed not to be killed while other pets are left on the streets, some living in crates for too long, and people struggle to keep their pets without support, our city must take the lead in progressive, lifesaving solutions. Austin Pets Alive! has been relatively quiet about these issues on public platforms as we wait for the much-needed shelter audit to bear fruit, and I regret that choice. APA! has been given a microphone for pets in our community over the last 15 years, and we need to help be the voice of animals in need both publicly and behind the scenes.

Today, Austin Pets Alive! has made the difficult decision to provide a 30-day notice to end our veterinary services contract with Laredo Animal Care Services (LACS).
When we began our partnership with LACS earlier this year, at the request of the Laredo city council and community, it was with the whole-hearted intention to help meet the city’s goals of providing medical care and practices that further saved lives. Every vaccine given and disease prevented, medical treatment administered, surgery conducted, and animal transported to another rescue partner was done to not only fulfill our contractual obligations but as a moral obligation to the pets being sheltered in the city. We heard from community member after community member how much it meant to them that their city shelter could become more aligned with the word “shelter” — providing true safety and care to pets that are lost, displaced or abandoned.
We’re very proud of the work we did alongside many of the dedicated LACS staff members. The last eight months have led to more than 1,000 spay/neuter surgeries (an approx 400% increase from the previous Veterinary vendor) and raised the feline live outcome rate to a historical high of over 70%. Dogs and cats that were once euthanized for having something as simple as a cold were treated and many have already been adopted.
Unfortunately, we were met with resistance from shelter leadership. Over the past few months as the changes required became more real, and hard, the goals of LACS shifted away from a lifesaving focus and back toward operating at a lower capacity for care and lifesaving. This approach means that thousands of animals who should live long healthy lives will continue to die in order to meet a regressive goal. We cannot in good conscience continue working under such a drastic diversion from the original goals the city council laid out for us to follow.
It hurts our hearts to leave so many pets and people behind but we believe that we have no other choice. Our true hope is that Laredoans saw that life saving was possible and that they will demand the changes necessary to be a humane city for beloved pets.

Help the People and Pets of Hays County by Sharing Your Feedback
Hays County Pet Resource Center and Austin Pets Alive! Launch Community Survey
HAYS COUNTY – Calling all Hays County community members and animal lovers to participate in an important survey! Your participation will help guide the future of animal welfare in the area.
Hays County has partnered with non-profit organization Austin Pets Alive! to lead the development of a new animal shelter that will provide programs focused on public safety, animal safety and lifesaving, increased public access to important resources for pet owners, and community education to provide safe and humane care for pets. The survey launches September 1, and community participation will help determine programs for the Hays County Pet Resource Center.
“We want to know what the community’s needs are for people and pets,” said Lee Ann Shenefiel, Austin Pets Alive! Executive Advisor and Project Coordinator. “All survey responses will be looked at and considered, so this is an important opportunity for the community to share their input with us and drive the conversation from the beginning on what people and pets need in Hays County. ”
The project aims to implement recommendations from a 2022 feasibility study that proposed an animal welfare model for Hays County. This includes the construction of a new shelter designed to support 2000 dogs and cats annually, investment in robust community programs designed to reduce the number of animals coming into the shelter and help keep people and pets together, and a high-volume public veterinary clinic. Initial construction estimates are around $24 million.
The survey is open to participants through September 30 and is available in online and print formats in English and Spanish. Austin Pets Alive! is also looking for volunteers to attend local events promoting the Pet Resource Center. Volunteers will visit with local community partners to share information about the project, gather survey input, and input survey results. Training and community service hours are provided, and application fees are waived for Hays County volunteers. Austin Pets Alive! | Austin FC 2023 Mascots of the Match

Since the inaugural season in 2021, Austin FC and Austin Pets Alive! have partnered up to showcase eligible dogs as honorary Austin FC mascots at each regular-season home match.
The first-of-its-kind partnership features APA! dogs through social media outreach and in-venue activations during each match at Q2 Stadium, all in support of Austin’s status as the country’s largest “no-kill” city and the promotion of APA!’s rescue, adoption, foster, and volunteerism efforts through this unique community platform. Last year, all 18 of the honorary mascots were adopted into loving homes, and many more will be adopted this year!
Quinn – ADOPTED
Quinn and his siblings came to Austin Pets Alive! when they were just three months old. They had been in the care of another Texas shelter, where Quinn tested positive for parvovirus. Quinn and his siblings were transported to Austin Pets Alive! because their first shelter did not treat puppies with parvovirus. National statistics show a 90% death rate for parvo positive puppies, if left untreated. Fortunately, Quinn and his siblings were treated in our Parvo Puppy ICU. Quinn was quickly adopted and lived in a home for about five years but was returned last month to the nonprofit animal shelter because his owner was moving. We are happy to report that following Quinn’s appearance as an Honorary Mascot, he was adopted!
Jennifer – at TLAC
Introducing the Honorary Mascot of the Match: Jennifer! Jennifer is a senior lady (8.5 years old) who loves people. As much as she enjoys taking walks and playing in the yard, she also enjoys snuggling up on the couch. Her former foster calls her a ‘marshmallow’ and she is a staff favorite at APA!.Jennifer came to APA! from Austin Animal Center back in 2017. She prefers people to other pets and would like to be the only pet in your home.
Dos – FOSTER TO ADOPT HOME
Dos is a mixed breed pup, but his foster is pretty sure he’s at least 50% North American Snugglehound. “He is the snuggliest boy ever. He’s loyal to his friends and never wants to let them out of his sight,” says his foster. He loves to cozy up next to you with his head on your lap or doze on your feet. If you’re not quite ready to get up when the alarm goes off in the morning, Dos is happy to keep you company for some extra cuddles. Dos knows his basic commands and enjoys training because it means treats! He’s smart and playful. walks nicely on a leash (no barking or chasing squirrels!), and is fully house-trained. He is currently in a foster home.
Batty – ADOPTED
Batty was named for his bat-like ears. This perfect pup was abandoned and hit by a car in a parking lot in Houston. Three shelters said they would euthanize him so the person who found him raised funds so Batty could have surgery on his pelvis. He was taken to Austin Pets Alive! to meet his future adopter. We are happy to share that Batty has been adopted!
Mindy – at TLAC
Mindy was hit by a car when she was brought into Austin Animal Center. The municipal shelter asked us if we could help Mindy and she now has a team of friends who help her with her wheelchair and take her to playgroup! Mindy is a 3 1/2 year old labrador retriever. She is ready to meet her adopter and people can apply to adopt her here.
Apollo, Atlas, Hoku, Nyx and Supernova – ADOPTED
These seven week old siblings are the perfect Austin FC Honorary Mascots! Their good looks are only matched by their superstar personalities. Apollo, Atlas, Hoku, Nyx and Supernova have all found their new homes!
Ikea – FOSTER TO ADOPT HOME

May is thrilled to be selected as the Austin FC Honorary Mascot. Another Texas shelter did not have room for May and her siblings, so Austin Pets Alive! took them in and they have been cared for in a foster home. May was adopted after the Austin FC match and she’s hoping everyone who met her at the Q2 Stadium will consider adopting, fostering volunteering or donating to their local animal shelter!

Austin Pets Alive! | APA!’s New Pet Pals Program Is Creating the Next…

Austin Pets Alive! has long been known for innovating, collaborating, and sharing our knowledge of how to save animals’ lives.
But animal welfare is also about humans—the humans who love and own pets, and the humans who work in animal shelters. That’s why we are so thrilled to introduce Pet Pals, our brand new program for at-risk and vulnerable working-age youth to participate in an 8-week paid internship!
The interns, who are between 16 and 21 years old, are learning the ins and outs of shelter management, and gaining the necessary skills and experience to work in animal sheltering—including at Austin Pets Alive!.
Nine interns form our inaugural class. Starting on February 4, every Saturday they are meeting at APA!’s Town Lake Animal Center campus for four hours to explore the world of animal welfare and learn important professional skills.
Each session includes a lesson and/or training, group discussion and activity, one-on-one mentoring, lunch and refreshments, and walking and playing with animals.
The program also involves resume building, mock interviews, and “building up all those interview skills that a young person probably usually doesn’t have access to before they start looking for a job,” says Alexis Telfair-Garcia, APA!’s Social Work Program Development Manager—and one of the country’s very first social workers on staff at an animal shelter.
“Pet Pals gives us and our community an urgently-needed opportunity to close the gap between human and animal services, and develop the next generation of animal welfare leaders,” Alexis says. “We hope, and expect, that this progress won’t stop in Austin, either—but that animal shelters in other communities will start Pet Pals programs of their own.”
Social work students from the University of Texas and St. Edward’s University serve as mentors for the Pet Pals interns, along with Austin Pets Alive! volunteers.
Dr. Ellen Jefferson, President and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!, says her excitement for Pet Pals is in part due to engaging the interns in the urgent work of saving the lives of cats and dogs—and it’s also about helping these young animal lovers realize their dreams.
“One intern told us she’s planning to major in animal science to become a veterinarian, and believes this program can help her get there. Another said they were moved to participate by the death of a beloved dog, and wanting to save the lives of other animals in this pet’s honor,” she says.
“Pet Pals will open doors and new paths for our interns, and change the lives of the cats and dogs who they touch with their work. We’re so proud to be part of the Pet Pals participants’ journey to do great things for people and pets.”

Austin Pets Alive! | USPS Embraces Our Furry Friends with ‘Love…

In a nod to America’s great affection for furry friends, the United States Postal Service unveiled two new ‘Love Forever’ stamps. The stamp dedication took place at the Austin Pets Alive! Texas animal shelter, with adoptable pets available for the event, allowing participants and attendees to see the animals receive and benefit from the love of the community.
The stamps display illustrations of a puppy and a kitten with their paws lightly resting on a red heart, perfectly timed for Valentine’s Day. USPS said each forever stamp is intended to evoke feelings of warmth and playfulness. They can add sentiment and whimsy to letters, birthday or graduation cards, baby shower invitations or thank you notes.

creatures, and their love for us in return,” said Judy de Torok, vice
president of Corporate Relations for the Postal Service. , who served
as the ceremony’s opening official and is a pet lover. “I have a
feeling these may be some of our most popular labels.”Also participating in the event were Dr. Ellen Jefferson, president and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!; Kelly Holt, Senior Manager of Austin Pets Alive! cat program; Richard Scott, volunteer dog behavior specialist with the rescue and Matt Beisner, star of “Dog: Impossible” on Disney+.
APA! officials hope the stamps will encourage people to support their local animal shelters.

Austin Pets Alive! | Parvo Puppy ICU Flooding | Help Needed!

One of Austin’s pet lifesaving treasures is at risk after ANOTHER flooding situation with sewage spilling into all three parvovirus treatment wards.
This is the same situation that the clinic staff faced this past Saturday when Austin Pets Alive! asked for adopters and fosters to pick up puppies who had already been treated – and tested negative – for parvovirus.
Because the Austin community responded and helped pick up 17 puppies on Saturday and 23 puppies on Sunday, there are currently 51 puppies being treated in the Parvo ICU.
No puppies are in danger of not being treated today but we are asked to take more sick puppies – multiple times throughout the day.
That said, the plumbing needs to be fixed quickly – and as you know, Austin Pets Alive! is a nonprofit, almost entirely funded through donations. Austin Pets Alive! does not receive any government funding AND the Parvo ICU has – so far this year – treated a whopping 563 puppies, which is 51% more parvo puppies than the same period of time in 2021.
Austin Pets Alive! will be working on a long-term solution, but for now, the cost of the repairs and replacement parts for the lifesaving Parvo Puppy ICU at Austin Pets Alive! is expected to reach $15,000. This covers the cost of laundry incineration, plumbing diagnosis, repairs, and clean-up.
APA! has one of the only parvo treatment units for shelter pets and is, by far, the largest in Texas. That means that any downtime translates into not being able to continue to accept the high volume of puppies who would certainly die without our Parvo Puppy ICU.

Gavin is one year old and loves other playful dogs just as much as he loves snuggling on the couch. Gavin is ready to be adopted from Austin Pets Alive! and go home with his new best friend.
March 6, 2022: Kenneth
We are thrilled to announce that the second Austin FC Honorary Mascot is Kenneth! Kenneth is a loveable three-year-old heartworm-positive dog who was looking for a loving home. If you are looking to meet the cuddliest couch potato, look no further than Kenneth (or Kenny as his fosters call him).
Kenny is just one of the sweetest pups. Throughout the day, he’ll come up to his fosters, look up with his beautiful hazel eyes and quietly ask for petting. He loves attention from his humans but is also independent enough to wander off to somewhere on his own once he is satisfied.
March 20, 2022: Rose
Austin FC presents the latest Honorary Mascot from Austin Pets Alive!: Rose! This one-year-old playful and happy dog is ready to find her forever home. Rose was shot as a puppy and suffered a spinal injury. She doesn’t let that prevent her from running around any park or yard with her custom-built wheels.
Rose gets along well with other dogs and cats. Her favorite thing to do is chase a tennis ball around and snuggle up with you!
April 10, 2022: Lance
Meet Austin FC’s latest Honorary Mascot from Austin Pets Alive!: Lance! Lance is a three-year-old lab mix who loves nothing more than to make himself comfortable in your lap. He is completely deaf, but that doesn’t stop him from playing just as well as the rest of the dogs!
The Austin FC community really showed just how amazing and inclusive they are in their appreciation of Lance, with some of them even greeting him in sign language.
April 23, 2022: RayRay
The most recent Austin FC Honorary Mascot, RayRay, was adopted!
This sweet pup came to Austin Pets Alive! in 2019 after APD received a call that he was abandoned in a home (his previous family moved out and left him behind) – he was taken to Austin Animal Center and they called Austin Pets Alive!. RayRay went to an adoptive home but that owner returned RayRay when she had to move. In the past two months, RayRay has made appearances at SXSW and as the most recent Austin FC Honorary Mascot. We are excited to announce that an Austinite named Amylynne met RayRay and adopted him! Amylynne says RayRay’s favorite things are “walks, sunbathing, napping, and cuddles!”
This season, RayRay is the first Honorary Mascot to be adopted! Stay tuned to meet the next Austin FC Honorary Mascot on May 8th!

Rose was shot as a puppy and suffered a spinal injury. She doesn’t let that prevent her from running around any park or yard with her custom-built wheels.
Rose gets along well with other dogs and cats. Her favorite thing to do is chase a tennis ball around and snuggle up with you!
April 10, 2022: Lance
Meet Austin FC’s latest Honorary Mascot from Austin Pets Alive!: Lance! Lance is a three-year-old lab mix who loves nothing more than to make himself comfortable in your lap. He is completely deaf, but that doesn’t stop him from playing just as well as the rest of the dogs!
The Austin FC community really showed just how amazing and inclusive they are in their appreciation of Lance, with some of them even greeting him in sign language.
April 23, 2022: RayRay
The most recent Austin FC Honorary Mascot, RayRay, was adopted!
This sweet pup came to Austin Pets Alive! in 2019 after APD received a call that he was abandoned in a home (his previous family moved out and left him behind) – he was taken to Austin Animal Center and they called Austin Pets Alive!. RayRay went to an adoptive home but that owner returned RayRay when she had to move. In the past two months, RayRay has made appearances at SXSW and as the most recent Austin FC Honorary Mascot. We are excited to announce that an Austinite named Amylynne met RayRay and adopted him! Amylynne says RayRay’s favorite things are “walks, sunbathing, napping, and cuddles!”
This season, RayRay is the first Honorary Mascot to be adopted! Stay tuned to meet the next Austin FC Honorary Mascot on May 8th!
