  • Englewood wants Aldi to ‘swipe right’ on the city amid Colorado expansion plans

    ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Englewood city leaders are hoping Aldi will fall in love with the city after the company recently announced plans to expand into Colorado.

    In the city’s January newsletter, officials said the city has made the first move, initiating contact with Aldi’s corporate real estate team and a local representative.

    Englewood’s assertive stance follows the low-cost grocer’s announcement last month that it plans to have 50 locations operating in Colorado in the next five years, part of a broader nationwide expansion plan.

    With several empty storefronts, the city hopes the German company will open multiple Aldi locations in Englewood.

    However, the city said in the same January newsletter that “there are no viable purchase options available for the company at the moment.”

    But Englewood isn’t backing down.

    Officials said it will continue working with the company to explore potential options.

    Aldi has yet to release specific opening dates or construction timelines for Colorado locations.

    A new study finds that grocery prices vary widely by store, with Costco, Aldi, and Lidl often cheaper than Walmart, while Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s cost significantly more.

    Switching grocery stores could save you some serious cash, at least on some items, according to a new study by Consumer Reports based on research by Strategic Resource Group.

    In six U.S. cities, the price of a full basket at major supermarkets was compared against the price at Walmart, which is the biggest grocery store in the country.

    Researchers chose about 40 common items to conduct the study.

    “We looked at a marketbasket of products … Folgers Coffee, pineapple, lemons, Kraft macaroni and cheese, eggs, milk, chicken drumsticks, Gain detergent, that kind of thing,” said Tobie Stanger, a writer for Consumer Reports.

    The study included sale prices if they were available without a membership, but not prices you would only get as a store member or through a store’s app.

    The price of some items couldn’t be compared, because the products aren’t sold at certain places, such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

    At Costco, where things are often sold in bulk, the price per unit was compared.

    “What we found are some pretty major differences, especially when you get into the specialty grocers,” Stanger said.

    The closest city to D.C. that the study looked at was Virginia Beach. There, it found the price of the basket compared with Walmart was nearly 17% lower at Costco, and a whopping 58% higher at Whole Foods.

    Also in Virginia Beach, prices at Aldi were about 16% lower than Walmart, and prices at Lidl were nearly 9% lower than Walmart.

    Averaging the results from all six cities studied, you find prices compared with Walmart were about 21% lower at Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Club. Prices at Lidl and Aldi were lower, too. Also nationally, prices were about 40% higher at Whole Foods, about 25% higher at Trader Joe’s and 24% higher at Harris Teeter.

    “If you’re starting with a lower priced store to begin with, you stand a better chance of having a smaller bill at the end when you go to the register,” Stanger said.

  • Growing number of affluent consumers are shopping at discount stores. Here’s why.

    Not only low-income shoppers are hunting for deals these days. Better off consumers are also flocking to discount stores to save a few bucks. 

    Since 2021, budget retailers have seen a large influx of more affluent shoppers, according to data from GlobalData Retail. This year, nearly 28% of high-income people have shopped at discount chains Aldi, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Five Below, Family Dollar, Lidl, Ollie’s, PopShelf or Walmart, up from around 20% four years ago, the research and consulting firm found.

    A key catalyst for the shift is one that has plagued Americans up and down the income ladder in recent years, experts told CBS MoneyWatch: inflation. 

    Emerging from the pandemic, many middle- and even upper-income consumers had extra savings after receiving federal stimulus checks and because they chopped their spending on categories like travel and dining out, said Neil Saunders, managing director and retail analyst at GlobalData. 

    But since then, the financial cushion wealthier consumers once enjoyed has shrunk while the cost of living has risen, leading many to seek out more affordable stores.

    “They don’t like the fact that more and more of their money is absorbed by essentials and the basics of life,” Saunders told CBS MoneyWatch. “So what has happened is they have sought out better value for money, and they’ve especially done that in grocery and household essentials.”

    GlobalData defines middle-income as households with annual income of $56,501 to $169,750, while high-income households are those earning more $169,751. The market research firm taps a range of data sources — including consumer surveys, credit card spending and retailer data — to build a national picture of the retail landscape.

    The migration of higher income consumers to discount retailers has “accelerated since the pandemic, and especially since the bout of inflation that started in 2021,” added Saunders, noting that a similar trend followed the 2008 financial crisis. 

    One of the biggest winners of this trend has been Walmart, according to Saunders. More than 17% of Americans earning six figures today shop at the Arkansas-based company, the world’s biggest retailer, up from less than 15% in 2021, GlobalData found. 

    To be sure, wealthier consumers don’t face the same financial constraints as low-income people. But high- and middle-income Americans are also looking for ways to beat inflation and stretch their dollar, experts said. 

    Inflation is well below its 2022 peak, but remains sticky for food and other essentials. Will Auchincloss, an Americas retail sector partner at EY Parthenon, told CBS MoneyWatch that elevated prices for many goods and services are forcing consumers across the income spectrum to “muscle through.” 

    Inflation isn’t the only thing driving more people to discount retailers. Better brand selection and a more diverse assortment of products has made budget chains more appealing to a wider audience, Saunders said, noting that retailers like Walmart and Aldi are actively courting more upscale shoppers. 

    “One of the things Walmart has been doing is refurbishing a lot of its stores, putting a bit more effort into presentation, because it knows that higher-income consumers expect a nicer experience,” he said. “If you provide that, the lower-income consumers like it, too.”

    Walmart remodels around 650 stores nationwide on an annual basis, according to a company spokesperson. The upgrades typically include updated layouts, newly painted exteriors and interiors, interactive displays, new signage and checkouts, and interactive displays — reminiscent what you might see in an IKEA store — that allow customers to touch and feel merchandise. 

    The company has also expanded its brand selections to include manufacturers like Apple and Dell, as well as fashion brands like Scoop and Free Assembly, a Walmart spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch. 

    Aldi, which did not respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment, has also tried make its stores more appealing. 

    “A lot of their new stores are very bright, they’re very clean, they’re very shoppable,” Saunders said. 

    “This isn’t about bargain-basement value,” he added. “This is about great prices, very low prices, but in a pleasant and a very aesthetically pleasing shopping environment.”

    Shoppers are in luck this summer, as several large retailers with locations in the Triangle recently announced that they’re cutting prices on items across departments.

    About 5,000 items at Target will be discounted over the next few months, the company announced in May. German grocer Aldi will drop prices on more than 250 items. Walgreens is also lowering prices on more than 1,300 products across health and wellness, personal care and seasonal departments. And in a May 16 earnings call, Walmart President and CEO John Furner said the company has “almost 7,000 rollbacks” in food items; Furner did not specify which items were affected.

    These price cuts come as inflation remains high. The personal consumption expenditures price index, which reflects changes in prices of goods and services purchased by U.S. consumers, rose 0.3% in April from the previous month, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Food prices decreased 0.2%, while prices for goods and services increased — 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively.

    Which items are cheaper at Target?

    In a May 20 news release, Target said it had just reduced prices on 1,500 items, and will discount thousands of more items over the summer.

    “Our teams work hard to deliver great value every day, and these new lower prices across thousands of items will add up to additional big savings for the millions of consumers that shop Target each week for their everyday needs,” Rick Gomez, an executive vice president at the Minneapolis-based retailer, said in a news release.

    Here are a few of the items shoppers can expect to find with lowered prices:

    • Dairy items such as milk and yogurt
    • Meat
    • Bread
    • Soda
    • Fresh fruit and vegetables
    • Snacks
    • Peanut butter
    • Coffee
    • Household essentials including diapers, paper towels and pet food

    Target also launched in February a brand called dealworthy, which features low prices on nearly 400 items including laundry detergent, toothbrushes, undergarments and paper plates. Prices of dealworthy items start at less than $1, and most items cost less than $10.

    Slashed prices affect hundreds of items at Aldi

    About a year ago, Aldi announced that it would reduce prices on more than 250 items, expecting to save American shoppers about $60 million.

    The retailer is continuing that pattern this year.

    In early May, Aldi said it was dropping prices on 250 items to help customers save about $100 million through Labor Day.

    “Aldi is always looking for ways to help customers save money, but with more experts warning of persistent inflation, the time was right to deliver even greater discounts on our already low prices for the second year in a row,” Dave Rinaldo, the president at Aldi U.S., said in a news release.

    Those discounts can be found on items including the following:

    • Simply Nature brand products: chia seeds, organic avocado oil, organic pinto/kidney beans, organic granola bars
    • Season’s Choice brand frozen blueberries, frozen French fries
    • Specially Selected French baguette, macarons
    • Vitalife assorted kombucha
    • Slimms summer sausage
    • Emporium Selection cracker cuts
    • Benton’s cookie thins
    • Southern Grove brand sunflower kernels, dried Mediterranean apricots
    • USDA Choice black Angus sirloin steak
    • Family pack chicken breast
    • Burman’s steak sauce

    Walgreens cuts prices on national and store-brand products

    Like Aldi, Walgreens has been slashing prices for a while — since October 2023.

    “Walgreens understands our customers are under financial strain and struggle to purchase everyday essentials,” Walgreens’ retail and chief customer officer Tracey D. Brown said in a news release.

    More than 1,300 items in health and wellness, personal care and seasonal categories are affected by the price cuts. Here are a few examples:

    If you’re a frequent Aldi shopper, then you are probably well aware that it’s German week at the discount grocer: The shelves are stocked with all kinds of delicious German goodies. From classics like Bavarian soft pretzels to German-style red cabbage — there’s a lot of new stuff to try over at Aldi this week. But out of all of these treats, we can’t help but drool over one dessert that makes us want to run to the grocery store ASAP: apple strudel!

    Now available in the frozen section at Aldi, you can pick up a box of Deutsche Küche Strudel for $3.29 for a box of two strudels. This dessert comes in two flavors: Fruits of the Forest Strudel made with apples and a selection of tart berries, and Apple Strudel filled with apples, raisins, and cinnamon. Each strudel is wrapped in a traditional German flaky puff pastry. They’re perfect for a dessert during date night at home! Just don’t forget to grab a carton of ice cream to pair with it. Or better yet, make your own no-churn ice cream.

    Strudel isn’t all Aldi’s German kitchen is celebrating. You can also buy Peanut Butter Puff snacks (shoppers rave about these!) as well as frozen pork and chicken schnitzel, and cheese spaetzle.

    If chocolate dessert is more of your thing, you can grab boxes of Strawberry or Orange Jaffa Cakes, bags of Hazelnut Biscuits, boxes of shortbread cookies and chocolate wafers, and Doppel Keks and Doppelinos (sandwich cookies with chocolate in the middle). For more sweets in the frozen section, Indulgent Cakes are also an Aldi frequent favorite, and they come in two flavors: Donauwelle (a “snow white” cake with vanilla, chocolate, and tart cherries) and Bienenstich (a “bee sting” cake with caramelized almonds and vanilla).

    So if you’re ready for Oktoberfest in May, Aldi has you covered.

    Fillo’s Walking Tamales come in three delicious flavors: Bean Salsa Verde, Bean Salsa Roja, and Bean Salsa Habanero. They are shelf-stable, vegan, gluten-free, and are ready to eat immediately. While you could make your tamale warm in the microwave, there is no heating necessary to eat it. These tamales are sold at $1.99 each, so if you’re looking for an easy shelf-stable lunch that doesn’t require you to stand over a hot stove or turn on that oven this summer, we have a feeling you’re going to want to stock up on a couple (or many) of these prepared tamales.

    When the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, the last thing I want to do is spend a lot of time in the kitchen. There are two boxes available to choose from. The Chipotle Shrimp Street Tacos includes wild-caught Argentine shrimp, creamy ancho chili sauce, chipotle seasoning, and a medley of spinach, corn, and roasted tomato. The Pork Carnitas Street Tacos have pork carnitas (obviously), cilantro pesto sauce, and a medley of peppers and onions. These meal kits serve four (the kit includes 8 tacos) and can be prepared in 20 minutes, making them the perfect weeknight dinner if you need something quick and tasty for the fam.

    The best part? These taco kits are found in the freezer section, making them the perfect dinner staple to stock up on when you need something light and easy to throw together for dinner — which, in my honest opinion, is exactly what I’m looking for during the summer when I don’t feel like flicking on the oven during those sweltering months.
