  • The Perseid meteor shower begins, lasts through late August

    The Perseid meteor shower is always a highly-anticipated astronomical event. However, this year, the viewing may be more difficult than in years past.


    What You Need To Know

    • The Perseid meteor shower has up to 75 meteors per hour
    • The best time for viewing will fall in the pre-dawn hours
    • A full moon may get in the way of peak viewing

    The Perseid meteor shower starts Thursday, July 17 and lasts through Aug. 24. While you can spot meteors zooming across the sky any time after dark, your best opportunity will be in the few hours before sunrise.

    As the night goes on, the constellation Perseus — where the meteors appear to originate­ — will rise higher in the northeast sky. However, you can look anywhere overhead, not just in that direction.

    Meteors will be visible through the duration of the event, but its peak is on Tuesday, Aug. 12. If you’re lucky enough to have a clear sky, you may see 50 to 75 meteors every hour. 

    The Perseids produce long, bright trails, making it one of the more visual annual showers.

    We see the Perseids in the late summer as the Earth passes through the dust and debris that Comet Swift-Tuttle leaves behind. The “shooting stars” actually come from grains that are about the size of Grape Nuts, according to Sky & Telescope, that burn in the atmosphere as they zip by at over 130,000 miles per hour.

    There is one fly in the ointment for this year’s Perseid viewing. The next full moon on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 9, is expected to be one of the brightest of the year. This will severly limit the number of meteors seen in the day or two leading up to and following the full moon.

    This would closely coincide with the peak on Tuesday, Aug. 12. 

    No matter what, you’ve got plenty of time to see this premier celestial event for the next several weeks.

  • How the weather could impact tonight’s MLB Home Run Derby

    When you think of a baseball player hitting a home run, there are lots of variables that come into play. Who is the batter? Who is the pitcher? What stadium are they playing at? But what about the weather? 

    Wind, rain and snow may come to mind first, but temperature and humidity can influence how far a baseball travels and be a deciding factor in if the ball makes it out of the park.


    What You Need To Know

    • The temperature can influence how far a baseball travels
    • Warm and humid air is less dense than cold and dry air
    • Lower density allows the baseball to travel further

    Warm air is less dense than cold air. Air expands when it’s heated, so the molecules are more spread out. This means there is less air for the ball to travel through, giving it less resistance. 

    Now factoring in humidity, warmer air can hold more moisture. Water vapor is light compared to nitrogen and oxygen molecules, so humid air is less dense than dry air at the same temperature.

    When it’s hot and humid, the air is lighter, and the baseball can travel further.

    A 2023 study claims that “a 1° C increase in the daily high temperature on the day of a baseball game played in a stadium without a dome increases the number of home runs in that game by 1.96%.” A bigger difference in home runs was observed for games played during the early afternoon versus night games because of the larger difference in temperature.

    How about cold air? Cold air is more dense than warm air, so the ball has to travel through more air. Molecules move closer together when the air contracts as temperature lowers. 

    If it’s cold and dry out, the drier air will have fewer water vapor molecules, so the nitrogen and oxygen comprising the air will be heavier than the humid air would be. 

    Ideally, outdoor games in hot and humid climates are most favorable for seeing your favorite team or player hit a home run.

    Tonight’s MLB Home Run Derby is in Atlanta, and the forecast calls for no rain and temperatures near 90 degrees with heat index values in the mid-90s. Get ready to watch the ball fly!

    Okay, you can’t completely blot out the sun’s light to keep it from heating up your house. But you can close your blinds or curtains. Bright sunlight shining through the windows adds unwanted heat… well, maybe not unwanted by everyone.

  • Chantal brought heavy rain and significant flooding to the Carolinas

    Chantal has become post-tropical as continues to move through the Mid-Atlantic. It’s expected to dissipate later Monday with some additional rainfall and flooding potential across parts of eastern Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

    • Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina on July 6
    • It brought heavy rainfall and significant flooding to parts of North Carolina
    • It was the first storm to make landfall in the U.S. in 2025


    Chantal began as Tropical Depression Three, forming off the coast of northeast Florida. It became Tropical Storm Chantal one day later, on July 5.

    It made landfall just one day after forming, moving inland near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, as a tropical storm with winds of 60 mph on July 6. Chantal was the first storm to make landfall in the U.S. during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

    The highest winds reported were in Myrtle Beach at the Springmaid Pier, with gusts up to 56 mph. An EF0 tornado also touched down in Wilmington, N.C., causing minor home damage and extensive tree damage.

    Heavy rainfall and flash flooding were the biggest impacts from Chantal. Radar-estimated rainfall totals up 9 to 12 inches were recorded in parts of North Carolina between Raleigh and Greensboro, causing significant flooding around Chapel Hill and nearby rivers.

    Chapel Hill Fire Department said it performed roughly 50 rescues since Sunday morning. First responders also rescued people in Durham after the Eno River hit major flood stage. Flooding on the Haw River shut down I-85 and I-40 in Alamance County after Chantal moved through.


    There are no more watches and warnings in effect.

    On America’s first Fourth of July in 1777, there was one color – orange. Fireworks have come a long way since then, taking on new colors and various shapes and sizes.

    However, there is a lot of science behind these modern-day marvels.

    How it works

    The colors that we see lighting up the night sky are caused by chemical reactions. The compounds in the firework are heated. These hot atoms give off light and that’s what we see. 

    Different elements from the periodic table give off different colors. Lithium or strontium create a red color. Magnesium sparks a white color. Copper ignites a blue color. 

    The weather’s impact

    Weather can make or break a fireworks show.

    It is a delicate balance when it comes to wind. Gusty conditions can be very problematic and blow debris onto spectators.

    Meanwhile, light winds can also be an issue as there is nothing to help disperse the smoke.

    Humidity is also very important. The lower the humidity the brighter fireworks appear. On muggy nights, fireworks can look dimmer and more muted.

    But did you know, weather can have a major impact on how your firework display looks?

    Fireworks date back to 7th century China, when the Chinese developed an explosive way to celebrate the victories of war. Since then, modern technology has led to elaborate firework displays across the globe every year.

    But weather has a crucial role in how the display looks to you. Conditions like rain, lightning, wind and temperature all play a role in how visible or even how bright or dim a firework can be. 

    Wind

    One of the most important factors in a firework display is the wind. It can significantly affect how the display goes off. Too much or too little wind can determine how visible the show will be to the spectators below.

    As fireworks explode, they create smoke. That smoke gets pushed around by the wind. 

    Calm winds are not a fireworks friend. During calm wind situations, the firework will explode and the smoke will sit stagnant, limiting the view of the show above. 

    Strong winds, on the other hand, can blow smoke or hot embers onto spectators. Wind must always be monitored closely by those lighting fireworks.

    Temperature and humidity

    Believe it or not, even the temperature and humidity of the air mass can play a role in how a firework show goes off.

    Usually air cools as you head up higher in the sky. But sometimes, on rare occasions, the air actually warms – making it warmer aloft rather than at the surface of the earth. This is called an inversion and when this happens, warm air will trap cooler, more dense air closer to the surface.

    This trapping, also known as a cap, can trap smoke from the exploding fireworks close to the surface as well. This can reduce visibility, making it difficult for spectators to view the show above.

    Humidity also can play a role. When the air becomes humid, there’s a lot more moisture in the air. If the humidity of the air is too high, the colors of the fireworks will dim – becoming less bright as they explode. A drier atmosphere will allow for a brighter, more vivid show.

    You may also find trouble in lightning fireworks if the humidity becomes too high. Use caution if you plan on lightning fireworks on a very humid evening.

    One of the most obvious weather hazards to a firework show is rainfall. Fireworks can be set off in the rain, but they must be located inside a sealed container to be lit. Typically, professional firework shows will have a contingency plan like this in place, in case of rainfall.

    Remember, if you find a fuse won’t light after being lit, discard the firework completely. Place it in a bucket of water and set aside.

    Finally, lightning is considered the most dangerous weather hazard to firework shows. Unlit fireworks that are struck by lightning can become lit and a hazard to those nearby on the ground.

    If lightning is within 10 miles of your area, head inside immediately, bringing all fireworks with you.

  • Where to expect tropical activity in July

    We’re just over one month into the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Forecasters are expecting another active season, so it’s important to know where tropical systems could form this month.


    What You Need To Know

    • July is typically a quiet month for the tropics
    • Tropical activity tends to pick up later in the season
    • Strong hurricanes can still form this month


    Historically, July is still a relatively quiet month across the Atlantic basin for tropical activity. According to NOAA, July only accounts for 7% of the Atlantic’s named storms since 1851, and less than 6% of hurricanes.

    There are a handful of limiting factors working against tropical development this month. Saharan dust outbreaks are still common this time of the year, and sea surface temperatures across the Atlantic’s main development region are still warming up, so tropical waves that track across the length of the Atlantic Ocean and survive to make landfall in the U.S. aren’t too common.

    The most common areas for tropical development this month are closer to land. These home-grown systems can spin up in the Gulf or off the Atlantic coast over the Gulf stream, where waters are slightly warmer and conditions are more favorable. 

    Just because tropical systems don’t usually form in July doesn’t mean they can’t.

    Last year, Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 storm in the Atlantic basin on record in early July. It made three landfalls, eventually moving inland over the U.S. near Matagorda, Texas, on July 8, 2024 as a Category 1 storm.

    Only three major hurricanes have made landfall in the U.S. during July. Most recently, Hurricane Dennis in 2005. 

    Dennis made landfall on Santa Rosa Island, Florida, as a Category 3 hurricane on July 10. It caused almost $4 billion of damage across the U.S. and Caribbean, and was responsible for 90 deaths, 17 in the U.S.

    The other two major hurricanes to make landfall in July were from the early 1900s. The Gulf Coast Hurricane of 1916 made landfall on July 5, 1916, near Pascagoula, Mississippi, as a Category 3 hurricane, claiming at least 34 lives.

    The 1909 Velasco hurricane made landfall near Velasco, Texas, on July 21, 1909 as a Category 3 hurricane, causing 41 deaths. 

    Development zones expand and tropical activity increases as we get further into summer.

  • How boaters can keep safe this summer

    Summer is in full swing, and that means it’s boating season. However, with warmer weather, comes the threat of dangerous thunderstorms.

    Seasoned boaters know all too well how quickly conditions can change on the water but knowing what to do in every situation can save lives.

    How do you know what weather to expect? Is it better to hurry to shore or stick it out? These are a few of the questions we will answer for you ahead.

    Understanding the dangers of weather on the water

    Thousands of boating accidents happen every year leading to injuries and death. Most of these accidents happen during the summer months of June, July and August. 

    Of those accidents, roughly 3-5% of them are caused by weather. Overall, weather was the 8th leading cause of boating accidents in a 2023 study done by USCG. 

    While on the water, there are many hazards to be aware of: lightning, heavy rain and strong winds that can create dangerous waves. Together, these dangers can make the water the worst place to be during a thunderstorm.

    TIP #1: Know before you go

    The first step to safety is taking the right steps to prepare. Before you even hit the waters, knowing the forecast for the day is paramount.

    Checking the forecast through your local National Weather Service office is a great start. If you can, it’s suggested to research the buoy observations to understand current conditions.

    If there is any chance of thunderstorms, it is strongly advised to rethink heading out. Ultimately, it is your choice to decide whether to head out, so as to ensure you are confident in the forecast.

    Weather apps, like the Spectrum News App, can help you make that decision. Additionally, having a NOAA weather radio is a great option.

    TIP #2: Staying weather aware

    Once the decision has been made for a day of boating, the job doesn’t end there. Some days may be tranquil, but other days the weather can be unpredictable and full of unwelcome surprises.

    Keeping an eye out for a few key signs could make all the difference. If you notice skies darkening, winds changing direction, pressure dropping, or simply hearing thunder in the distance, heading back to port is the best decision to make.

    If you think conditions can improve, hanging by a landing until it looks safe will allow you the option to head back out. If conditions get worse, seek dry land.

    TIP #3: Keeping safe during a storm

    If you unfortunately can’t get to land before a storm hits, having a safety plan to protect yourself and guests is essential.

    Thunderstorms are the worst nightmare for boaters. They can create many hazardous conditions like frequent lightning, strong winds, large waves, waterspouts and blinding rain.

    While getting off the water is always the goal if a thunderstorm is about to hit, sometimes that isn’t an option right away.

  • Google launches new AI-powered weather model to predict hurricanes

    Google has introduced a new, experimental artificial intelligence (AI) weather model for predicting hurricanes. The new AI-based tropical cyclone model will be another tool for meteorologists and weather enthusiasts alike to predict the track and intensity of future storms this hurricane season.

    Google’s new AI-powered tropical cyclone model is the latest addition to its WeatherNext model family, a suite of AI weather models from Google DeepMind and Google Research. According to Google, “this model can predict a cyclone’s formation, track, intensity, size and shape — generating 50 possible scenarios, up to 15 days ahead.”

    Traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models that are used to forecast hurricanes, like the GFS and Euro (ECMWF), are physics-based. Simply put, they combine current atmospheric weather conditions with a set of equations that govern our atmosphere, to predict future atmospheric conditions.

    Physics-based models have shown tremendous improvement in the past 50+ years, but there are still omissions, estimations, approximations and compromises in each step of creating the forecast, so it’s far from perfect.

    Google claims that its AI-powered model can overcome the trade-offs of physics-based models. “It’s trained to model two distinct types of data: a vast reanalysis dataset that reconstructs past weather over the entire Earth from millions of observations, and a specialized database containing key information about the track, intensity, size and wind radii of nearly 5,000 observed cyclones from the past 45 years.”


    Google’s internal testing of their model has shown its model’s predictions for track and intensity are as accurate as, and often more accurate than, current physics-based models. Using 2023 and 2024 as test years, Google’s model had a 5-day track prediction, on average, “140 km closer to the true cyclone location than ENS — the leading global physics-based ensemble model from ECMWF.”

    This year, forecasters from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) will be able to use predictions from Google’s experimental AI models, alongside the more traditions physics-based models to create forecasts. “We hope this data can help improve NHC forecasts and provide earlier and more accurate warnings for hazards linked to tropical cyclones.” 

    Despite the early hope and promise shown by new AI-powered weather models, it’s important to note that they’re still experimental and just one tool. These models are still under development, and you should always refer to local officials and the NHC for official watches, warnings and forecasts.

    Today is the first day of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Here are some helpful resources to help you and your family prepare.

    How to prepare?

    Even if you are not in a storm’s path, there are ways to prepare in advance that will make it easier for you when the time comes. It’s important to know if you live in an evacuation zone, and if so, to develop an evacuation plan for you and your family.

    You can assemble a hurricane kit, including items like non-perishable food for your family and pets, water, flashlights, a first aid kit and more.

    Also, reviewing your insurance plans if you own a home and to sign up for flood insurance if it is a separate plan.

    Here is a full breakdown of how to prepare you and your family and what you can do today.

    This year’s forecast

    NOAA and Colorado State University are both predicting above normal activity this season.

    This year’s forecast includes several factors, primarily continued ENSO-neutral conditions, warmer than average ocean temperatures, forecasts for weak wind shear and the potential for higher activity from the West African Monsoon, a primary starting point for Atlantic hurricanes.

  • Central Floridians Clayton Jr., Broome make AP All-America 1st team

    FLORIDA — Florida Gators guard Walter Clayton Jr. and Auburn Tigers forward/center Johni Broome on Tuesday became the first players from their universities to be named first-team selections to The Associated Press men’s college basketball All-America teams.

    Clayton, who took Bartow to two Class 6A state championships in high school, and Broome, who played two seasons at Plant City High School before transferring to Tampa Catholic and leading that team to the Class 4A semifinals twice, led their college basketball teams this season to No. 1 seedings in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Broome’s Tigers hold the No. 1 overall seeding for the tournament and sit atop the South Region, while the Gators are seeded No. 4 overall and are No. 1 in the West Region.

    The other first-team members are Duke’s Cooper Flagg, who is from Maine but played multiple seasons at Montverde Academy in Lake County; Alabama guard Mark Sears, who was a second-team pick last year, and Purdue guard Braden Smith.

    Clayton averaged 17.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and recorded 11 games with at least 20 points on a Gators team that captured the Southeastern Conference Tournament title. He helped Florida climb as high as No. 2 in the AP rankings during the season and seeks to help the Gators win a championship.

    “Whatever path, I like my guys,” said Clayton, who started college at Iona. “Me and my guys against whoever.”

    Broome averaged 18.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and over 2 blocks per game this season.

    Only Broome, a third-team pick a year ago, and Flagg were among the first five on the ballots of all 61 national media members who vote for the weekly AP Top 25. 

    “I’ve proved a lot individually through my career but my main goal is a team goal, which is to win the national championship,” said Broome, who played two seasons at Morehead State before spending the past three with the Tigers. “When the team shines, everyone shines individually. Coming from where I came from, it means a lot to me.”

    Flagg, who is widely expected to be the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft if he decides to turn pro after the season, averaged 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

  • Groundswell and Local Leaders Announce $20 Million Investment in Local Energy Resilience Program

    A new $20 million regional initiative announced today will bring critical home repairs, energy efficiency upgrades, and community resilience projects to more than 500 households across Alabama and West Georgia. Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Community Change Grant, this groundbreaking investment will reduce household energy bills by hundreds of dollars a year, strengthen local infrastructure, and establish 10 community resilience centers to protect residents during extreme weather events – creating lasting economic and environmental benefits across multiple counties.

    Building a resilient community requires collaboration and investment, and this new $20 million initiative is bringing together local officials, municipal partners, and community business owners across Georgia and Alabama to make it happen. With a focus on energy efficiency, community resilience, and empowerment, the effort will create conditions for long-term economic development in Alabama and West Georgia

    The SOUL™ (Save On Utilities Long term) program will provide home safety and energy efficiency upgrades over the next three years, helping households lower electricity bill costs and strengthening resilience against extreme weather. SOUL helps reduce utility bills by enhancing home energy efficiency, focusing on senior citizens and hardworking families facing high energy costs.

    Through this initiative, 500 households will benefit from such energy efficiency upgrades as improved insulation and lighting, as well as vital home repairs including heating and air conditioning system upgrades, roof repairs, and the replacement of aging appliances-all through Groundswell‘s SOUL program. This funding will direct over $11 million into home improvements-reducing average annual energy burdens by 30% to 65%, improving indoor air quality, and increasing the overall health and safety of homes.

    The grant will serve five counties in Alabama and one in West Georgia. The investment will support the development of community resilience hubs. These hubs will offer vital resources during extreme weather events while serving as long-term centers of stability and connection. Additionally, they will help local host institutions save on energy costs-an estimated $6,000 per year per building, or more than $100,000 over the hub’s lifespan-allowing those savings to be reinvested into serving the community even more effectively.

    “This funding isn’t just about improving homes, it’s about building community power,” said Michelle Moore, CEO of Groundswell. “Groundswell’s initiatives are designed to ensure that our work delivers savings while also strengthening resilience and opportunity for all. By reducing energy burdens, strengthening local infrastructure, and investing in workforce development, we’re creating lasting, sustainable clean energy solutions that directly benefit families across Georgia and Alabama.”

    The work will also support economic development-creating new opportunities for small businesses and enhancing workforce development opportunities.

    “Our community is full of hardworking people who deserve homes that are safe, efficient, and affordable to keep running,” said City of Lanett Mayor Jamie Heard. “This grant gives us the chance to make sure folks aren’t struggling to heat their homes in the winter or cool them in the summer. Investing in our residents and their homes means investing in our local workforce, and that’s a win for everyone.”

  • Racist text messages referencing slavery raise alarms in multiple states and prompt investigations

    WASHINGTON — Racist text messages invoking slavery raised alarm across the country this week after they were sent to Black men, women and students, including middle schoolers, prompting inquiries by the FBI and other agencies.

    The messages, sent anonymously, were reported in several states, including New York, Alabama, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. They generally used a similar tone but varied in wording.

    Some instructed the recipient to show up at an address at a particular time “with your belongings,” while others didn’t include a location. Some of them mentioned the incoming presidential administration.

    It wasn’t yet clear who was behind the messages and there was no comprehensive list of where they were sent, but high school and college students were among the recipients.

    The FBI said it was in touch with the Justice Department on the messages, and the Federal Communications Commission said it was investigating the texts “alongside federal and state law enforcement.” The Ohio Attorney General’s office also said it was looking into the matter.

    Tasha Dunham of Lodi, California, said her 16-year-old daughter showed her one of the messages Wednesday evening before her basketball practice.

    The text not only used her daughter’s name, but it directed her to report to a “plantation” in North Carolina, where Dunham said they’ve never lived. When they looked up the address, it was the location of a museum.

    “It was very disturbing,” Dunham said. “Everybody’s just trying to figure out what does this all mean for me? So, I definitely had a lot of fear and concern.”

    Her daughter initially thought it was a prank, but emotions are high following Tuesday’s presidential election. Dunham and her family thought it could be more nefarious and reported it to local law enforcement.

    “I wasn’t in slavery. My mother wasn’t in slavery. But we’re a couple of generations away. So, when you think about how brutal and awful slavery was for our people, it’s awful and concerning,” Dunham said.

    About six middle school students in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, received the messages too, said Megan Shafer, acting superintendent of the Lower Merion School District.

    “The racist nature of these text messages is extremely disturbing, made even more so by the fact that children have been targeted,” she wrote in a letter to parents.

    Students at some major universities, including Clemson in South Carolina and the University of Alabama, said they received the messages. The Clemson Police Department said in a statement that it had been notified of the “deplorable racially motivated text and email messages” and encouraged anyone who received one to report it.

    Fisk University, a historically Black university in Nashville, Tennessee, issued a statement calling the messages that targeted some of its students “deeply unsettling.” It urged calm and assured students that the texts likely were from bots or malicious actors with “no real intentions or credibility.”

    Missouri NAACP President Nimrod Chapel said Black students who are members of the organization’s Missouri State University chapter received texts citing Trump’s win and calling them out by name as being “selected to pick cotton” next Tuesday. Chapel said police in the southeastern Missouri city of Springfield, home of the university, have been notified.

    “It points to a well-organized and resourced group that has decided to target Americans on our home soil based on the color of our skin,” Chapel said in a statement.

    Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland also sent an email to parents stating “many students” received text messages containing “racist threats.”

    “Local law enforcement and the FBI are aware of these messages, and law enforcement in some areas have announced they consider the messages low-level threats,” the email said.

    Nick Ludlum, a senior vice president for the wireless industry trade group CTIA, said: “Wireless providers are aware of these threatening spam messages and are aggressively working to block them and the numbers that they are coming from.”

    David Brody, director of the Digital Justice Initiative at The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said that they aren’t sure who is behind the messages but estimated they had been sent to more than 10 states, including most Southern states, Maryland, Oklahoma and even the District of Columbia. The district’s Metropolitan Police force said in a statement that its intelligence unit was investigating the origins of the message.

    Brody said a number of civil rights laws can be applied to hate-related incidents. The leaders of several other civil rights organizations condemned the messages, including Margaret Huang, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who said, “Hate speech has no place in the South or our nation.”

    “The threat – and the mention of slavery in 2024 – is not only deeply disturbing, but perpetuates a legacy of evil that dates back to before the Jim Crow era, and now seeks to prevent Black Americans from enjoying the same freedom to pursue life, liberty, and happiness,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “These actions are not normal. And we refuse to let them be normalized.”
